Preview: Indians (56-64) at Yankees (67-53)
    Game: 2
    Venue: Yankee Stadium
    Date: August 21, 2015 7:05 PM EDT

The Cleveland Indians have become an anchor that has slowed the New York Yankees' August push.

The sub-.500 Indians have taken three of four from the Yankees in the last 10 days, and they'll try to keep hindering New York's playoff chances Friday night in the Bronx.

Cleveland's 3-2 victory Thursday snapped the Yankees' three-game winning streak and trimmed their AL East lead to 1 1/2 games over idle Toronto.

New York (67-53) had regrouped from five consecutive losses with victories in six of seven, including the finale of last week's series at Progressive Field, before dropping their fifth matchup in six with the Indians dating to last year.

Cleveland (56-64) has recorded 47 hits in four games against the Yankees this month. Masahiro Tanaka (9-5, 3.56 ERA) gets his shot to hold down the Indians' lineup - something he couldn't do in his only meeting with Cleveland last July 8, when he allowed five runs and 10 hits in 6 2-3 innings of a 5-3 road loss.

Tanaka, though, has gone 4-2 with a 3.46 ERA in six outings since the All-Star break and threw a five-hitter in a crucial 4-1 road victory over the Blue Jays on Saturday. He walked three and struck out eight.

"Up to this point, I think today was one of the most important games that I've pitched in," Tanaka told MLB's official website through an interpreter.

Cleveland will also send out a hot pitcher in Carlos Carrasco (11-9, 3.63), who's been dominant on the road and has had some recent success against the Yankees.

Carrasco is 7-3 with a 2.49 ERA away from home and has gone 4-1 with a 1.55 ERA in his last seven such outings. His .184 road batting average against is tops in the major leagues.

It may be hard to remember Carrasco's last outing against the Yankees on Aug. 11, when he threw eight innings and gave up two runs, four hits and no walks with eight strikeouts. He was long gone when Michael Brantley delivered a walk-off single in the 16th inning of Cleveland's 5-4 victory.

Carrasco, who's pitched at least seven innings and has two complete games in his last four starts - posting a 1.36 ERA in that span - is 2-0 with a 1.06 ERA in his past four games against New York, the last two being starts.

New York's Stephen Drew has three hits in nine at-bats against Carrasco, including a pair of home runs.

Brantley has two doubles and a home run in four at-bats against Tanaka. He's hit .471 in four games as a designated hitter while battling through a nagging left shoulder injury.

Jason Kipnis, making his second start following a stint on the disabled list due to a right shoulder issue, ended an 0-for-17 slump with three hits Thursday. The All-Star second baseman has batted .469 in his last seven games against the Yankees.

"He's a good hitter," manager Terry Francona told MLB's official website. "The hope is a guy comes back and doesn't start off in one of those funks, but he was (good). When he's hitting the ball the other way, that's a great sign for Kip."

New York manager Joe Girardi said Thursday that Mark Teixeira was moving around well after suffering a bone bruise in his right leg, though it is unclear when he will return to the lineup. Girardi said the slugger 'was moving around better today.'

Preview: Diamondbacks (59-61) at Reds (51-68)
      Game: 2
      Venue: Great American Ball Park
      Date: August 21, 2015 7:10 PM EDT

David Holmberg didn't have a long history with the Arizona Diamondbacks, but the left-hander hopes a meeting with his former team will help him quickly forget about the worst start of his brief major league career.

Holmberg and the reeling Reds will try to snap out of their funks Friday night as this four-game series continues at Great American Ball Park.

Holmberg made his MLB debut with the Diamondbacks in 2013, lasting just 3 2-3 innings in his only appearance. He was traded to the Reds in a three-team deal that winter and has seen mixed results in nine starts since.

The former second-round pick of the White Sox was called up in late July to join the Reds' rotation, and he compiled a 1-1 record and 3.06 ERA through three starts. But Holmberg (1-2, 5.95 ERA) veered off course Saturday, yielding seven runs on five hits - three homers - and four walks to the Dodgers in two-plus innings of an 8-3 loss.

"I was not getting ahead of guys," Holmberg told MLB's official website. "I wasn't throwing a lot of strikes. I wasn't throwing a lot of quality pitches. That's not (how) you get guys out."

The fourth straight lefty starter the Diamondbacks will face isn't kidding. When Holmberg starts an at-bat with a strike, batters are 4 for 32 with four walks. If his first pitch is out of the zone, they're 12 for 32 with nine walks.

The Reds (51-68) have dropped six straight behind their all-rookie rotation, with Thursday's 5-4 loss their third one-run defeat in four games. The final run of a 4-0 lead disappeared on A.J. Pollock's two-out, two-run single in the eighth inning.

The flip side was a series-opening win after dropping four of six to begin this trip for the Diamondbacks (59-61), whose offense broke out for 13 hits and all five runs in the final five innings.

Pollock finished 4 for 5 with three RBIs. The center fielder has hit .454 during a nine-game hitting streak against the Reds.

'The bats were a little stale at the start, but as the game went on, the quality of our at-bats got better,' said Pollock, who is hitting .387 since July 29.

The Diamondbacks, who took two of three against the Reds earlier this month, will give the ball to Rubby De La Rosa.

The right-hander's ERA was over 5.00 at the All-Star break, but he's gone 4-0 with a 2.54 ERA in six starts since after holding Atlanta to a run over seven in Sunday's 2-1, 10-inning loss.

De La Rosa (10-5, 4.40 ERA) will face a different-looking Cincinnati lineup. Left fielder Marlon Byrd was traded to the Giants on Thursday for minor league pitcher Stephen Johnson.

General manager Walt Jocketty said before Thursday's game that Brennan Boesch and Jason Bourgeois will earn the bulk of the playing time in left field until Billy Hamilton (shoulder) comes off the disabled list. Bourgeois played center field and went 2 for 4 with a triple on Thursday.

Cincinnati hopes to have second baseman Brandon Phillips back after he left Wednesday's 4-3 loss to the Royals with inflammation in his right biceps tendon. Phillips was available off the bench Thursday.

Diamondbacks left fielder David Peralta went 7 for 11 with three RBIs against the Reds earlier this month, including a 5-for-5 day in Arizona's 4-3 win on Aug. 9. He hasn't started the last two days against the lefties the Diamondbacks have faced after going 0 for 6 in Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

Preview: Blue Jays (66-55) at Angels (63-58)
        Game: 1
        Venue: Angel Stadium of Anaheim
        Date: August 21, 2015 10:05 PM EDT

The Toronto Blue Jays have lost four times in the last 20 games and haven't been able to take control of either of their races, but that's why they brought in David Price.

The former Cy Young winner makes his fourth start since switching uniforms, and Friday night's visit with the Los Angeles Angels could be every bit as important as his last two against AL East-leading New York.

Los Angeles (63-58) trails Toronto (66-55) for the top wild-card spot - a three-game lead that can be erased over the weekend. The Blue Jays are 1 1/2 behind the Yankees, and the Angels trail Houston by 2 1/2 in the West.

The Blue Jays haven't won a series against the Angels since taking two of three from Aug. 12-14, 2011, going 11-19 in the eight sets since.

"It's a logjam right now," Toronto manager John Gibbons said after Thursday's 7-4 loss in Philadelphia. "We've got to get back in it. Somebody else could, also. It's good baseball."

Price (11-4, 2.41 ERA) was more hittable than normal in last Friday's 4-3 home defeat to the Yankees but avoided the loss, giving up three runs and 11 hits in 7 1-3 innings. He allowed three hits that sparked a four-run eighth.

"That's baseball, that's part of it, and if you don't like it, pitch better," Price told MLB's official website.

The left-hander is 2-0 with a 1.61 ERA in three starts with Toronto, and his work on the road this year has been near that level with a 7-2 record and 1.93 ERA in 12 starts. That success hasn't followed him to Angel Stadium, where he's lost three straight starts with a 5.48 ERA.

Albert Pujols is 3 for 15 against him, but two of the hits were home runs. Mike Trout is 3 for 13 with seven strikeouts in the matchup.

That pair provided the offense with an RBI apiece in Thursday's 8-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox, which denied the Angels a four-game sweep. Offense has been difficult to come by in a 5-8 span with 2.6 runs per game.

Trout had two hits Thursday but has batted .222 in those 13 games.

Up-and-down run support is one of the reasons Hector Santiago doesn't have more wins, particularly at home.

Santiago (7-6, 2.86) is 0-2 with a 5.08 ERA in his last five starts, but he limited Kansas City to two runs and three hits in seven innings of Sunday's 4-3 road loss. He didn't get the decision.

"A good mix of pitches; everything was used," Santiago said. "I was ahead in the count."

The left-hander now returns to his home mound, where he's gone 3-0 with a 2.42 ERA in 12 starts since losing his first outing of the season April 10. Of his 13 home starts, he's received two or fewer runs in nine.

His only career start against the Blue Jays was a 3-2 win May 19 in which Santiago yielded two runs - one earned - and four hits in seven innings. Combined with five relief efforts, he has a 1.80 ERA and .143 opponent batting average in 15 innings against Toronto.

Former AL West opponent Josh Donaldson is 2 for 16 against him, but Justin Smoak is 5 for 8.

Toronto has dropped three of five since its 11-game winning streak. Edwin Encarnacion homered in both games in Philadelphia to extend his career-best hitting streak to 16 games with a .379 average, and the first baseman has also reached base in 21 straight with a .446 on-base percentage.

Preview: Rays (60-61) at Athletics (53-69)
          Game: 1
          Venue: O.co Coliseum
          Date: August 21, 2015 10:05 PM EDT

Plugging Drew Smyly back into the starting rotation was not expected to be seamless, but the Tampa Bay Rays sure hope to get more out of him than what they got Sunday.

Smyly, who missed three months with a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder, was roughed up in his first start back and will try to return to form Friday night against an Oakland Athletics team that has hit him hard.

The Rays (60-61) would like to see their left-hander rebound as they try to close the gap on the four teams they trail in the wild-card race. Chris Archer threw a one-hitter at Houston in Thursday's 1-0 win to pull Tampa Bay within three games of the wild card-holding Los Angeles Angels.

Taking the mound for the first time since May 5, Smyly was pounded by Texas for five runs and seven hits in four innings of a 5-3 loss in Arlington.

"I mean, I'm looking forward to Oakland," Smyly told MLB's official website. "I'm not thinking about the injury. I'm not thinking about Texas. It's one game. People have bad games. Hopefully I can pitch better."

Smyly (0-2, 4.35 ERA) has had little luck against the A's in his career. In five appearances in this matchup, Smyly is 0-2 with a 9.95 ERA. That includes a .364 opponent batting average, a blown save, and a start last season in which he gave up a career-high four home runs.

In two career road starts versus the A's, Smyly is 0-2 with a 7.84 ERA.

Oakland's Billy Butler is 7 for 14 against him with a home run and a double.

The A's (53-69) followed a seven-game losing streak with back-to-back wins over the Los Angeles Dodgers, including Wednesday's 5-2 victory.

They'll try to make it three straight behind Chris Bassitt (1-4, 2.60), who has pitched very well since being recalled from Triple-A Nashville on July 25.

In five starts since returning to the majors, the right-hander is 1-2 with a 2.34 ERA and a .200 opponent batting average. He logged a career-high eight innings at Baltimore on Saturday, allowing three runs and five hits with six strikeouts before leaving without a decision in a 4-3 loss.

Bassitt has lasted at least six innings and held opponents to less than six hits and three runs in each of his last five starts.

The Rays announced Thursday that reliever Jake McGee will miss 6-8 weeks with a torn meniscus in his left knee and is questionable to return this season.

McGee had six saves in 10 chances this year to go with a 1-2 record and 2.57 ERA while largely working as the setup man for Brad Boxberger. McGee registered 19 saves in 23 opportunities as Tampa Bay's closer last year.

"It's frustrating," manager Kevin Cash said. "Jake is such a big part of our bullpen, part of our team."

The A's and Rays split a four-game series at Tropicana Field in May. Oakland has won five of six at home against Tampa Bay.

Preview: White Sox (56-63) at Mariners (56-65)
            Game: 1
            Venue: Safeco Field
            Date: August 21, 2015 10:10 PM EDT

While Felix Hernandez is coming off one of the worst performances of his stellar career, Chris Sale was perhaps the most dominant he's been all season in his most recent effort for the Chicago White Sox.

As Hernandez attempts to rebound for the Seattle Mariners, Sale tries to win a third straight start when these All-Star aces square off for the first time Friday night at Safeco Field.

Though both teams are mired in disappointing seasons, watching two pitchers of elite caliber match up should be a treat for their fans, teammates and coaches.

"As a fan, you can think of that and realize what you're seeing as pitchers: Two incredible guys really in our game today," White Sox manager Robin Ventura told MLB's official website.

"I don't know if each of the lineups likes it, but I think as a baseball fan, you enjoy seeing those, and I know players enjoy that as well when they get to see those."

Hernandez (14-7, 3.65 ERA), however, must find a way to successfully move on after he allowed a career-high 10 earned runs and 12 hits, including a season-high three homers, in 2 1-3 innings of Saturday's 22-10 loss at Boston.

'Embarrassing. That was embarrassing,' Hernandez said.

He wasn't good in the three starts before that, either, posting a 5.75 ERA. Toss in Saturday's outing and he's allowed 41 hits in his past 22 2-3 innings, but that's still not enough to worry manager Lloyd McClendon.

"Felix is fine," he said. "He just threw a clunker. It's the way it is."

Hernandez is 3-0 with a 2.62 ERA in six home starts against the White Sox (56-63), last facing them there in 2013.

Chicago, though, has won all four starts against Seattle (56-65) made by Sale (11-7, 3.32), who is 3-0 with a 2.59 ERA and has completed two of those contests.

Sale posted a 7.61 ERA while losing three of his first four starts following the All-Star break but has a 1.26 ERA in the last two. He allowed one hit and matched a career-high with 15 strikeouts in seven scoreless innings of Sunday's 3-1 victory over the Cubs.

'He made us look silly. But that's what he does,' Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo said.

The left-hander leads the AL with 208 strikeouts, tying his total from last season and 18 shy of his career high set in 2013.

"I'm a firm believer at looking back at the end of the season and not putting too much emphasis on it right now," Sale said. "Just one of those things you talk about after the season."

Nelson Cruz is batting .462 with two home runs and one strikeout in 13 at-bats against Sale. He's hit .377 with 15 of his major league-leading 36 homers in his last 27 games for the Mariners, who have won five of the last seven against the White Sox at home but return from a 2-4 trip.

Jose Abreu is hitless in three at-bats against Hernandez, but is batting .381 with six of his team-leading 73 RBIs in the last six games. He drove in half of those runs to help Chicago snap a seven-game road slide with Thursday's 8-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

Brewers failing to provide value as underdogs

Over the course of the long and grinding Major League Baseball season, underdogs can provide a lot of value when bettors properly pick their spots. The Milwaukee Brewers haven't been one of those teams.

The Brew Crew are an ugly 2-12 in their last 14 games when tabbed as underdogs. Pinnacle Sports is presently offering Milwaukee as +142 moneyline pups for Friday's matchup with the Washington Nationals.

After opening with a 7.5 run total, the sportsbook has dropped that number slightly to 7.

Royals' recent struggles in Boston unexplainable

There are some things in sports you just can't explain.

Take the Boston Red Sox dominance over the Kansas City Royals, for example.

Since the start of last season, the Red Sox, who finished in last place last year and are headed that way again, have been a thorn in the side of the Royals, seven-game losers in the World Series last year and currently the owner of baseball's second-best record.

"That's baseball," said Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas, whose solo homer was Kansas City's offense in a 4-1 loss to the Red Sox on Thursday. "That's just what happens.

"That's a good team over there. You can't take anybody lightly in this game, especially a quality team like the Red Sox."

The Royals, who didn't get to their hotel beds until 6 a.m., saw their five-game winning streak end, but still won 10 of their last 13 games as runaway leaders of the AL Central.

MLB roundup: Tigers, Rays throw one-hitters

DETROIT -- Alfredo Simon fired a one-hit shutout, leading the Detroit Tigers to a 4-0 win over the Texas Rangers on Thursday.

The Tigers earned their third straight win behind Simon, who struck out five and walked two while facing four batters above the minimum. Simon (11-7) pitched his first complete game in his 74th career start.

The Rangers' lone hit was a two-out double by Rougned Odor in the fifth.

Nick Castellanos, who had two home runs and five RBIs on Wednesday against the Cubs, drove in Detroit's first two runs Thursday against Texas with a single and a sacrifice fly.

                        Rays 1, Astros 0

HOUSTON -- Chris Archer pitched a one-hitter for the third shutout of his career, and Tampa Bay salvaged a series split with a victory over Houston.

Archer (11-9) allowed one walk and finished with 11 strikeouts while throwing 98 pitches. He retired the final 15 batters he faced.

Desmond Jennings knocked in the only run of the game with a two-out single in the fourth inning. Jennings finished 2-for-4.

                        Indians 3, Yankees 2

NEW YORK -- Josh Tomlin pitched seven innings of one-run ball for his first win as a starting pitcher in over a year, and Cleveland held on for a victory over New York.

In his second major league start following right shoulder surgery in March, Tomlin (1-1) allowed a home run to Alex Rodriguez among two hits. Tomlin struck out six and issued two walks.

Cleveland's Lonnie Chisenhall had an RBI double, and Michael Brantley and Jose Ramirez added run-scoring singles. Jason Kipnis ended an 0-for-17 skid with three hits.

                        Red Sox 4, Royals 1

BOSTON -- Wade Miley earned his team-high 10th victory with 7 1/3 strong innings, and Ryan Hanigan had a two-run single in a three-run third inning as Boston downed Kansas City.

The win, in the opener of a four-game series, was the third straight for Boston. Kansas City, which saw its five-game winning streak end, still owns victories in 10 of its past 13 games.

Miley allowed only a solo homer to Mike Moustakas in the fifth inning. By that time, the Red Sox had a 4-0 lead.

                        Pirates 4, Giants 0

PITTSBURGH -- Charlie Morton pitched into the seventh inning, Neil Walker hit a two-run home run, and Pittsburgh blanked San Francisco.

Morton (8-4) scattered four hits over 6 2/3 innings while striking out eight and walking two. The right-hander was pulled in the seventh inning with a four-run lead after the Giants loaded the bases with two outs.

Jared Hughes, who got Gregor Blanco to line out to end the seventh-inning threat, and Tony Watson completed the six-hit shutout.

                        Marlins 9, Phillies 7

MIAMI -- Martin Prado and Marcell Ozuna each hit two-run homers, leading Miami to a win over Philadelphia.

Brad Hand (3-3) allowed four hits, two walks and one run in six innings. He struck out five. The left-hander exited the game with an 8-1 lead, but Philadelphia got to Miami's bullpen, scoring six runs in the final three innings.

Phillies right-hander Jerome Williams (4-9) gave up eight hits, four walks and eight runs in 1 2/3 innings.

                        Cubs 7, Braves 1

CHICAGO -- Chris Coghlan went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs, and Jake Arrieta pitched six shutout innings as Chicago snapped a three-game losing streak with a victory over Atlanta.

Coghlan's third-inning single scored Addison Russell with the first run, and Anthony Rizzo added a three-run homer later in the inning.

Arrieta (15-6) won his fourth straight and had his third scoreless outing in his past four starts. He allowed four hits, struck out seven and walked one while throwing 107 pitches, 75 for strikes.

                        Rockies 3, Nationals 2

DENVER -- Yohan Flande pitched a career-high seven innings, leading Colorado past Washington.

Flande (3-1) gave up two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out five. He outdueled Max Scherzer (11-10), who yielded three runs on eight hits and three walks in six innings.

Ben Paulsen singled home the winning run with one out in the seventh as the Rockies won for just the second time in 12 games and avoided being swept in the three-game series.

                        Diamondbacks 5, Reds 4

CINCINNATI -- A.J. Pollock's two-out, two-run single in the eighth lifted Arizona to a come-from-behind victory over Cincinnati.

Arizona's Chris Owings fell a triple shy of the cycle, and Pollock went 4-for-5 with three RBIs as the Diamondbacks rallied after trailing 4-0 following the second inning.

Jason Bourgeois went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI for Cincinnati, which dropped its sixth straight.

                        Twins 15, Orioles 2

BALTIMORE -- Miguel Sano and Eduardo Escobar both homered, and rookie Tyler Duffey threw 7 2/3 solid innings as Minnesota snapped a three-game losing streak with a victory over Baltimore.

The game was delayed by rain for 2 hours, 31 minutes at the start, but that didn't appear to bother the Twins, who improved to 4-0 against Baltimore this year.

Sano, Kurt Suzuki, Trevor Plouffe and Eddie Rosario each had two-run hits for the Twins. The 15 runs were a season high for Minnesota, which banged out 18 hits overall, one short of its season high.

                        White Sox 8, Angels 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Chicago broke open a tie game with a five-run fifth inning and salvaged the final game of a four-game series against Los Angeles.

The White Sox scored just four runs total in losing the first three games of the series, but they bettered that in one decisive inning Thursday night at Angel Stadium.

Adam Eaton, Tyler Saladino, Adam LaRoche and Geovany Soto each had two hits for Chicago, which ended a seven-game road losing streak.

                              TRENDS:

Mets have owned Rockies in recent matchups

The Colorado Rockies just can't figure out the New York Mets, evidenced by the Rockies being on the losing end in each of the last eight times the clubs have met.

New York is set to invade Coors Field in Friday's action on the diamond, with Bartolo Colon scheduled to get the nod for the Metropolitans. Jonathan Gray is the probable starter for the Rockies.

The Mets are listed as slight -113 moneyline faves at most sportsbooks.

Mets posting ugly numbers with Colon on the hill

To say the New York Mets have hit a rough patch behind veteran hurler Bartolo Colon recently would be a massive understatement.

Heading into Friday's clash with the Colorado Rockies, New York has garnered just one victory in Colon's last 10 starts. The Rox are slated to counter with right-hander Jonathan Gray.

At the time of writing, books were offering Colon and the Mets in the -117 ballpark.

                              s
The Baltimore Orioles have been a solid bet to bounce back in games after a loss lately.

In their last nine contests coming off a loss, the O's are 8-1. In the wake of a 15-2 beat down by the Minnesota Twins on Thursday, Baltimore will be seeking to right the ship Friday against the Twinkies.

Tommy Milone and Wei-Yin Chen are slated to get the ball for Minny and Baltimore, respectively.

Buck Showalter's crew are presently -161 moneyline favorites at sportsbooks.

Miller churning out Unders, but W's have been rare

Atlanta Braves backers haven't gotten much from Shelby Miller lately, but it's been a different story for Under bettors when the right-hander has taken the mound.

The Braves are 3-13 in Miller's last 16 starts, however, the Under has gone 7-1 in his previous eight outings. Friday's Braves-Cubs clash pits Miller against Kyle Hendricks.

As of this writing, Atlanta was +176 moneyline underdogs at online book Pinnacle Sports. The total for the game has not yet hit the board.

Smyly has been a fantastic play for Under bettors

Tampa Bay Rays southpaw Drew Smyly has been one of the top Under pitchers in baseball this season.

The Under has paid out in 10 out of Smyly's last 11 starts. Smyly is scheduled to get the nod Friday versus Chris Bassitt and the Oakland Athletics.

Sportsbooks have pegged the tilt with a total of 7 runs.

Giants suffering from road woes as of late

The San Francisco Giants have been far from road warriors recently, dropping seven out of their past eight contests away from home.

Madison Bumgarner and the Giants will seek to buck that trend Friday opposite Jeff Locke and the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park.

Sportsbooks are currently dealing the Giants in the -127 ballpark. The total for the game was sitting at 7 as of 8:30 a.m. ET.

King Felix getting roughed up since All-Star break

Seattle Mariners ace Felix Hernandez has not exactly lived up to his moniker of "King" since the All-Star break. Hernandez is 3-2 with a 6.31 ERA in six starts since the All-Star break and has served up six homers after giving up 10 in 18 starts prior to the break.

The 29-year-old is coming off his worst outing of the season as the Boston Red Sox smacked three home runs and tallied 10 earned runs in a 22-10 win.

In Hernandez's six starts since the break, the Over has a record of 4-2.

Hernandez will be pitted against the Chicago White Sox and their ace Chris Sale Friday evening. The Mariners are presently -108 and the total is at 6 - the lowest on Friday's board.
