    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Nationals 15, Rockies 6-- Colorado pitchers threw 90 balls, 113 strikes. Oy.

-- Astros have started ten different guys in leftfield this season.

-- $1 hot dogs at every Wednesday Houston home game; a good food value.

-- Phillies' prize rookie Maikel Franco (broken wrist) is out for the year.

-- Mets gave Bobby Parnell a choice; option to AAA, DFA, which would've meant a possible trade, or the 15-day DL-- he chose the disabled list.

-- Red Sox already have $66.6M in payroll on the books.....for the 2019 season!!!!

    **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: A heaping helping on Hump Day....

    13) Red Sox fired GM Ben Cherington (no one quits these jobs) and hired former Tiger team president Dave Dombrowski to run baseball operations. Big change; just two years ago, Boston won the World Series. Now the GM is out and the manager is batting lymphoma. New GMs usually like to hire their own manager.

    12) Odd fact: Cherington is married to ESPN's Wendi Nix, while Dombrowski is married to former ESPN anchor Karie Ross, undoubtedly the most attractive woman anchor ever employed by ESPN-- she came to ESPN right from being a cheerleader during the Barry Switzer era at Oklahoma.

    11) Adderall is a drug that will get you suspended by baseball, but 100+ players have what is called a "therapeutic use exception" which I guess is like a ************. Last night, Mets' analyst Keith Hernandez, who knows his way around drugs, called the exception "doctor shopping", referring to Chris Davis of the Orioles getting a doctor to sign off on his use after he was suspended for using Adderall last season.

    10) Pirates 9, Arizona 8 (15)-- Francisco Cervelli not only caught all 15 innings in last night's game, he scored from first with winning run on Pedro Florimon's game-winning triple as the Pirates won another close game-- Pittsburgh relief pitchers have now won their last 17 decisions, a remarkable stretch of success.

    9) Donald Trump on jury duty? Where is Court TV when we need it?

    8) I'm a little late with this, but I finally saw the interesting special on Showtime about knuckleball pitchers, focusing mainly on RA Dickey and Tim Wakefield. Old-time knuckleball pitchers Phil Niekro, Charlie Hough are also in the film a little. If you like baseball, it is worth seeing.

    7) Orel Hershiser was once the Rangers' pitching coach; it was he who suggested that RA Dickey become a full-time knuckleballer. Good move.

    6) Tigers 10, Cubs 8-- First loss in 13 games for Chicago with Chris Coghlan batting third in the order.

    5) Jordan Spieth threw out the first ball in Arlington last night; he is lefty and he appeared to be wearing cleats when he threw a strike from the mound. It was a big night for first pitches Tuesday; Zach Johnson threw a strike at Wrigley, but when the game was delayed by rain, he didn't stick around to sing Take Me Out to the Ballgame (after midnight). He must've had an early tee time today.

Out in Anaheim Deandre Jordan of the Clippers threw a strike on his first pitch; imagine seeing a guy as big as Jordan staring at you from 60 feet away?

    4) I like to go to Denny's for breakfast late at night, after I've updated this fine piece of Interweb real estate; anyway, I'm in there late Monday night and four young people come in and sit in the next booth. One guy has two plastic bags that look like they're filled with saline solution, like you'd find in a hospital.

But it isn't saline solution, it is water and there are little fish in each bag; not exactly sure where these geniuses got the fish, but instead of stopping at a store and buying a little container for the fish, they're carrying them around with them, displaying them on the table next to their food. Given that they were not exactly sober (the people, not the fish), I'm concerned the fish may not have survived the evening.

    3) The beauty of baseball is that it is a daily grind, 162 games played over 182 days-- you have to be good most every day, not just one day a week. Weaknesses are fairly obvious when you have to play every day; it is why after six months, you have the best teams playing in the playoffs. You get there, you have earned it.

    2) So Jared from Subway is pleading guilty to child porn charges; where exactly does this guy go for another job? I have a feeling he'll be making the rounds of hideous reality TV shows over the next few years.

    1) Baseball movie trivia: Royce Clayton played 2,108 big league games in his 17-year career; he is also a part of baseball movie trivia.

Clayton was the actor who played Miguel Tejada in Moneyball, and was also the first batter former schoolteacher Jim Morris faced when he made the Devil Rays in 1999 as a rookie in his 30's. Morris' story was made into a rmovie called The Rookie, with Dennis Quaid playing Morris.

MLB roundup: Pirates outlast D-backs in marathon

PITTSBURGH -- Pedro Florimon's triple in the bottom of the 15th inning gave the Pittsburgh Pirates a 9-8 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night after they blew a late five-run lead.

Francisco Cervelli hit a two-out single off rookie reliever Keith Hessler for his fourth hit of the game and Florimon, who entered the game at shortstop as a defensive replacement, followed with a triple off the right-field wall.

The Pirates led 8-3 after seven innings but the Diamondbacks scored three times in the eighth inning then two earned runs off closer Mark Melancon on a pair of errors in the ninth to force extra innings.

Jung Ho Kang and Starling Marte both homered and also had two hits along with Pedro Alvarez, Gregory Polanco and Andrew McCutchen while reliever Joe Blanton pitched three scoreless relief innings for the win.

      Blue Jays 8, Phillies 5

PHILADELPHIA -- Josh Donaldson hit two homers and drove in four runs as Toronto beat the Philadelphia.

Donaldson, who went 3-for-4 in the game, put the Jays ahead to stay with a three-run shot off Philadelphia's Jeanmar Gomez in Toronto's five-run sixth inning.

It was Donaldson's 33rd homer of the season, third multi-homer game of the season and the sixth of his career. Edwin Encarnacion also homered in the sixth for the Jays, who won for the 16th time in 19 games. They lead the American League wild-card race.

      Red Sox 9, Indians 1

BOSTON -- During the rout of Cleveland, Boston announced it hired Dave Dombrowski to be the club's new president of baseball operations. He replaces president and CEO Larry Lucchino, who resigned.

In the game, rookie Eduardo Rodriguez pitched eight innings of six-hit ball and the Red Sox collected 16 hits to even the series between the last-place teams at 1-1.

Travis Shaw had four hits, second baseman Brock Holt three and David Ortiz picked up a pair.

      Yankees 8, Twins 4

NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguez hit a grand slam with one out in the seventh inning as the New York Yankees rallied for a victory over Minnesota .

Mired in a 1-for-27 slump, Rodriguez drove a 1-0 fastball from rookie J.R. Graham into the Yankees bullpen beyond the center-field fence. It was his 25th home run and also his 25th career grand slam.

The decisive inning began when Chase Headley singled ahead of walks by Brendan Ryan and Brett Gardner against Ryan O'Rourke. After Rodriguez's home run, the Yankees added insurance runs with nobody out in the eighth on a two-run double by Headley and a run-scoring single by Jacoby Ellsbury.

      Mariners 3, Rangers 2

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Seattle's Hisashi Iwakuma didn't have no-hit stuff, but he was still good enough to cooled off Texas.

Iwakuma, who had a no-hitter in his last outing, gave up just five hits in seven innings to a Texas team that had won five-straight overall and eight straight at Globe Life Park.

The Mariners scored three times off Texas rookie Chi Chi Gonzalez in the first. Nelson Cruz lined an RBI double to left field and two batters later, Seth Smith hit a two-run homer into the Texas bullpen in right-center. The Rangers got a run off Iwakuma in the second inning on a solo homer by Rougned Odor.

      Mets 5, Orioles 3

BALTIMORE -- Jacob deGrom allowed one run over 7 2/3 innings, Curtis Granderson hit a pair of homers and the New York Mets took the series opener against Baltimore.

DeGrom gave up five hits with one walk and six strikeouts. He allowed seven runs in his past seven starts with the Mets winning each of those games.

Granderson passed Lucas Duda for the team lead in home runs with 22.

      Astros 3, Rays 2 (10 innings)

HOUSTON -- Marwin Gonzalez opened the bottom of the 10th inning with a walk-off home run, giving Houston its second walk-off win in three games a victory over Tampa Bay at Minute Maid Park.

Gonzalez, who finished 3-for-4, drilled a 3-2 pitch from Rays closer Brad Boxberger into the right-field seats to pull the Astros even in this four-game series.

Astros right-hander Luke Gregerson worked two perfect innings of relief to pick up the win. He followed Will Harris, whose perfect eighth inning set the tone for the Houston bullpen.

      Marlins 9, Brewers 6

MILWAUKEE -- Ichirio Suzuki had four hits and Miami's bullpen bent but didn't break, leaving the tying run stranded at first in a victory over Milwaukee at Miller Park.

The Marlins relievers had posted 4 1/3 scoreless innings, protected a five-run lead heading into the ninth.

Dee Gordon, Derek Dietrich and Cole Gillespie had two hits each as the Marlins collected 13 hits, seven of them at the expense of Brewers starter Tyler Cravy.

      Royals 3, Reds 1 (13th inning)

CINCINNATI -- After Ben Zobrist hit a game-tying solo homer off Aroldis Chapman in the ninth, Jarrod Dyson raced home on a throwing error in the 13th to lift Kansas City over Cincinnati to open a two-game interleague series at Great American Ball Park.

With the Royals trailing 1-0, Zobrist ended Chapman's home saves streak at 56 games when he launched a 2-1 pitch into the left field seats leading off the ninth.

It was Chapman's first blown save since Sept. 7, 2012, vs. Houston.

      Giants 2, Cardinals 0

ST. LOUIS - Ryan Vogelsong authored six shutout innings as San Francisco blanked St. Louis at Busch Stadium.

In improving to 9-8, Vogelsong allowed two hits, walked one and fanned five. After slogging through a 30-pitch first inning, the right-hander retired 16 of his last 17 hitters, allowing only a leadoff double by shortstop Jhonny Peralta in the fourth.

Four relievers handled the last three innings for San Francisco, with Santiago Casilla garnering his 29th save.

      Nationals 15, Rockies 6

DENVER -- Washington, aided by some shoddy Colorado pitching, broke a six-game losing streak.

Rockies pitchers issued 10 walks (one intentional), and eight of those runners scored. The Nationals also scored two runs on wild pitches and a Rockies' balk led to another run.

Jose Reyes had four hits for the Rockies. Washington's Bryce Harper recorded four walks and four runs scored - both career highs. Ian Desmond had four RBIs for the Nationals and third baseman Yunel Escobar hit a two-run homer in the first and drove in three runs while scoring four.

      Angels 5, White Sox 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Los Angeles Angels starter Garrett Richards went seven strong innings in a win over the Chicago White Sox at Angel Stadium.

Richards wasn't dominant, but he was good enough, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits, striking out four and walking none.

White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu had three hits off Richards, including an RBI double.

The Angels only had five hits in the game, but made the most of them. A two-run homer by Kole Calhoun and a solo homer by Albert Pujols in the first inning gave Richards an early cushion that would stand up.

      Padres 9, Braves 0

SAN DIEGO -- James Shields pitched six shutout innings and Melvin Upton Jr. hit a pair of two-run homers as San Diego thumped Atlanta.

Shields allowed five hits, walked two and struck out seven as the Braves lost their ninth straight at Petco Park. It was Shields' second win in 14 starts and his first at home in more than a month.

It was the Upton's seventh multi-homer game, with his second home run to left field coming in the seventh.

      Athletics 5, Dodgers 4 (10 innings)

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Designated hitter Billy Butler lined a walk-off double to right field in the bottom of the 10th inning, leading Oakland to victory against the Los Angeles Dodgers at the O.co Coliseum.

Mark Canha led off the inning with a double down the left-field line off right-hander Yimi Garcia, his career-high fourth hit of the game. Butler ended the game with his double to right.

Canha went 4-for-5 with two doubles, drove in two runs and scored three times. Danny Valencia went 2-for-5 and scored a run for the A's, and left-hander Fernando Abad (2-2) got the win, blanking the Dodgers for two-thirds of an inning.

Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis went 1-for-1 with a three-run homer, walked a career-high tying four times and scored twice.

      Tigers 10, Cubs 8

CHICAGO -- J.D. Martinez's eighth inning sacrifice ignited a three-run eighth as topped the Chicago Cubs in a storm-delayed contest.

The runs came off Cubs right-handed reliever Pedro Strop, who loaded the bases with none out.

The Cubs suffered their second straight loss while the Tigers won their third in five outings.

Over red-hot when Teheran hits the road

In Julio Teheran's last 11 starts away from home, the Over has gone a sizzling 10-0-1.

Therean is slated as the probable starter for the Braves Wednesday opposite Tyson Ross and the Padres.

As of 7 p.m. ET Tuesday, sportsbooks had not yet released a total for the NL tilt.

Eovaldi becoming a clutch pitcher for Yankees backers

The New York Yankees have paid out for moneyline bettors in five out of Nathan Eovaldi's last six starts.

Eovaldi and Ervin Santanta are slated to get the nod for Wednesday's contest for the Yanks and Twins, respectively.

Sportbooks are presently dealing the Yankees in the -160 ballpark as of this writing.

D-backs' Hellickson aims to make next start

PITTSBURGH -- Jeremy Hellickson is hopeful of being able to make his next start Saturday night against the Reds at Cincinnati.

The Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander said he felt better Tuesday, a day after leaving his start against the Pittsburgh Pirates because of cramping in his gluteus muscle that was caused by dehydration.

Hellickson said he was OK following his regular workout regimen but said the bigger test would come before Wednesday night's game against the Pittsburgh when he has his between-starts throwing sessions.

Montgomery really hitting the skids for Mariners

The Seattle Mariners have gone 0-7 in the last seven games started by left-handed starting pitcher Mike Montgomery. The 26-year-old will look to get one in the win column at the Texas Rangers Wednesday evening.

Montgomery is 4-5 with an ERA of 4.14 and a 1.34 WHIP in 14 starts this season, but he's been really roughed up in those previous seven starts. Opponents have touched Montgomery for 29 earned runs in 32 2/3 innings of work across his last seven starts (7.99 ERA).

The Mariners are presently +120 at the Rangers (-130) who are expected to counter with Derek Holland.

According to weather forecasts, wind will be blowing out the centerfield at around 18 miles per hour in Chicago when the Cubs host the Detroit Tigers Wednesday evening.

Daniel Norris is scheduled to start for Tigers and Jon Lester is expected to counter for the Cubs. The total is still off the board for this matchup.

Wednesday's game features Derek Holland on the bump for the Rangers (-130) and Mike Montgomery expected to get the start for the Mariners (+120).

Game of the Day: Tigers at Cubs
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kyle Schwarber belted his ninth home run of the season in a 10-8 loss to the Tigers Tuesday evening.

Detroit Tigers at Chicago Cubs (-206, OFF)

Coming off their first home loss in three weeks, the Chicago Cubs hope to salvage a split of their two-game interleague series with the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday. The Tigers outlasted the Cubs for a 10-8 victory in the rain-delayed opener, snapping Chicago’s eight-game home winning streak.

The Cubs’ lead for the National League’s second wild card is down to three games over San Francisco, but Chicago still has six more home games before beginning a six-game road trip with three against the Giants. The Tigers smacked around Cubs left-hander Jon Lester on June 9 in Detroit, tagging the ace for five runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings. Miguel Cabrera (14-for-25, HR) and Victor Martinez (8-for-19, HR) have enjoyed particular success against Lester. Detroit, which ranks fifth in the American League with 68 stolen bases, might try to get the running game going against Lester, who has given up a major league-high 35 thefts.

                    PITCHING MATCHUP:
Tigers LH Daniel Norris (2-2, 4.24 ERA) vs. Cubs LH Jon Lester (8-8, 3.21)

Norris is 1-1 with a 4.76 ERA in three starts since being acquired from Toronto in the David Price deal. The 22-year-old was excellent in his Tigers debut at Baltimore but has surrendered nine runs (eight earned) in 9 2/3 innings over his last two outings. Norris is making his Wrigley Field debut, but he pitched a scoreless inning in relief against the Cubs last season.

Lester has posted five straight quality starts, going 4-0 with a 2.04 ERA over that span. The 31-year-old has hit double-digits in strikeouts twice during that stretch, including 10 in a six-inning stint against Milwaukee his last time out. Mets Syndergaard a different pitcher on the road

Mets rookie phenom starter Noah Syndergaard has been a revelation in New York, but he has actually struggled quite a bit away from Citi Field with the Mets going 1-7 in his eight road starts.

Syndergaard is 0-5 and pitching to a 5.01 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP with just a 2.88 strikeout to walk ratio in his eight road starts. Compare that to his home stats where he is 701 with a 1.82 ERA, a 0.88 WHIP and a 8.13 strikeout to walk ratio.

Syndergaard takes the mound at Orioles Park to take on Baltimore Wednesday night, where the Mets are currently +108 dogs.

                          Schedule spot

The CFL’s most Eastern team visits its most Western when the Montreal Alouettes come to BC to face the Lions as 3-point road underdogs Thursday. The Lions have been the wise wager when these non-conference foes clash, covering in 23 of their last 31 head-to-head meetings overall, including a dominating 14-3 ATS mark in their last 17 home games with Montreal.

While those trends are impressive, BC is playing on a short schedule in Week 9. The Lions are coming off a 52-22 thrashing at the hands of the Ti-Cats in Hamilton Saturday and have a quick turnaround to put that loss behind him. The Lions have lost three of their last four games and have struggled with mid-week matchups, covering just four times in their past 13 Thursday contests.

                          Letdown spot

The St. Louis Cardinals have enjoyed an extended home stand in recent weeks, wrapping up a nine-game slate inside Busch Stadium with a series against the San Francisco Giants. The Cardinals have been tested in those games, hosting the Pirates and Marlins before welcoming the reigning World Series champs, and have bolstered their spot atop the National League in the process.

St. Louis crosses the country to kick off a 10-game road swing, which will nearly take them into September, with a three-game set in San Diego beginning Friday. The Cardinals are in letdown mode for Game 1, off a grueling series with the Giants and travel on top of that wear and tear. St. Louis and San Diego split a four-game series back in early July. Veteran John Lackey is on the mound for the Cardinals, lugging a 4.25 road ERA into Friday’s start – compared to a trim 1.91 ERA at home.

                          Lookahead spot

The Miami Hurricanes are still one of the most hated football programs in the land, and a lot of that animosity is coming from the Coral Gables faithful. Head coach Al Golden is on the hot seat in South Beach and in desperate need of a turnaround at “The U”. Picking up wins against old rivals like Nebraska, which is a 2-point underdog at Miami in Week 3, is key to Golden’s employment.

But before the Canes and Huskers rekindle their bad blood, Miami visits in-state little brother Florida Atlanta in Week 2. The Hurricanes will likely be lofty faves against the Owls out of the C-USA, but Florida Atlantic will have a packed house at FAU Stadium on September 11 for a nationally televised Friday night showdown. With the Hurricanes holding back with Nebraska on their minds, the Owls and new head coach Charlie Partridge could keep this game closer than oddsmakers expect.
