Preview: Giants (64-54) at Cardinals (76-42)
    Game: 2
    Venue: Busch Stadium
    Date: August 18, 2015 8:15 PM EDT

Lance Lynn is trying to rebound from the shortest start of his career, and he's still seeking his first victory over the San Francisco Giants.

Lynn faces the Giants for the first time since last year's NL Championship Series as the major league-leading St. Louis Cardinals go for a 10th win in 13 tries Tuesday night.

Lynn (9-7, 2.95 ERA) was pulled with two outs in the first inning and was tagged for seven runs - three earned - and six hits while hitting a batter in Thursday's 10-5 loss to Pittsburgh.

"It's not something we normally see from Lance," manager Mike Matheny said. "Those happen from time to time. You've just got to let them go."

Lynn is 0-4 with a 6.18 ERA in six career starts against San Francisco, losing all three in the regular season with a 7.98 ERA.

The right-hander, though, was effective in a 5-4 home win over the Giants in Game 2 of the 2014 NLCS. He allowed two runs in 5 2-3 innings of St. Louis' only victory in the series.

In the first matchup since, the Cardinals (76-42) beat San Francisco 2-1 on Monday after rookie Stephen Piscotty tripled and scored on Mark Reynolds' groundout in the eighth.

Piscotty has six hits over the last three games, including two doubles and a homer. He's batting .341 in 25 games since being called up from Triple-A Memphis, including a .407 average in 17 home contests.

"It feels good to contribute," Piscotty said. "It's just so much fun."

Piscotty played the majority of his first month in the majors in left field, but started in right on Monday after fellow rookie Randal Grichuk went on the disabled list with an elbow injury. Jason Heyward shifted from right to Grichuk's regular spot in center, but only lasted two innings there in the opener before leaving with tightness in his left hamstring.

"We made the proactive move of just getting him out," Matheny said of Heyward, who will have another round of tests Tuesday. "We're not going to go any further."

The Giants (64-54), three games back of the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers, are dealing with a key injury of their own. They opted not to activate Mike Leake (hamstring) from the disabled list to make his scheduled start.

Instead, Ryan Vogelsong (8-8, 4.15) gets the nod in his place for a third time. The right-hander served up a homer on his first pitch Thursday, but that was the only run he allowed while equaling his career high with eight strikeouts in five innings of a 3-1 win over Washington.

"I guess I had deception on my fastball and a little extra zip," Vogelsong told MLB's official website.

Vogelsong is 3-2 with a 3.40 ERA in eight starts - three in the postseason - against the Cardinals with San Francisco, but he allowed four runs in just three innings in Game 4 of the NLCS before the Giants rallied for a 6-4 win.

He's struggled with Matt Carpenter, who is 6 for 13 with a triple, a double and four walks off him. The third baseman's .509 average in 18 career regular-season matchups with the Giants is his highest against any opponent.

Carpenter is hitting .368 with eight homers and 15 RBIs in the last 18 games overall.

San Francisco's Brandon Crawford is aiming for a career-high 12-game hitting streak, but he's 3 for 12 with six strikeouts against Lynn.

Buster Posey is 4 for 6 with a homer against Lynn in the regular season. He flied out to the wall as a pinch hitter to end the opener, but he's batting .436 in 11 non-playoff games at Busch Stadium.

Preview: White Sox (55-61) at Angels (61-57)
      Game: 2
      Venue: Angel Stadium of Anaheim
      Date: August 18, 2015 10:05 PM EDT

Despite their poor play over the last three-plus weeks, the Los Angeles Angels remain confident they can get on a roll.

They'll try to get going in the right direction with a seventh consecutive home victory over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night.

Los Angeles (61-57) has won only seven times in its last 24 games, making Monday's 2-1 victory over Chicago extremely significant following a 1-6 trip that began with a three-game sweep at the hands of the White Sox.

"We needed this win. There was really no other way around that," said first baseman C.J. Cron.

Although the Angels were held to two or fewer runs for the fifth time in their last eight contests, their belief has not wavered while sitting 2 1/2 games behind first-place Houston in the AL West and one-half game out of the final wild-card spot.

"As a team, when we execute and all do what we're capable of doing, we're going to win a lot of games, because we're really good," closer Huston Street told MLB's official website.

Cron and Albert Pujols each homered and Street recorded his 28th save after blowing one in Sunday's 4-3, 10-inning loss at Kansas City.

"You have to turn the page," Street said. "They pay everybody else to remember, and they pay me to forget."

Cron, who recorded half of the club's four hits in the opener, is batting .419 with three home runs and eight RBIs in his last 11 games. He homered in the seventh to break a 1-all tie.

"I put a good swing on it, and fortunately it went out," he said.

Cron's only hit in six career at-bats against John Danks (6-9, 4.58 ERA) came Wednesday when the left-hander allowed one run in 7 1-3 innings of a 3-2, 13-inning win over Los Angeles.

Danks, however, is 0-3 with a 7.71 ERA in his last four on the road, where the White Sox have dropped five in a row after winning 11 of the previous 12. They've dropped 12 of the last 15 at Anaheim.

Trying to remain relevant in the wild-card race, Chicago (55-61) has lost 11 of its last 17 overall.

"We've gotta win. That's just the way it is," Danks said. "It doesn't do us any good to look ahead. We need to win the game at hand. We've done that."

Avisail Garcia had two hits for Chicago, which stranded eight runners and went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position. Jose Abreu was hit by a pair of pitches, but remained in the game. He's 1 for 14 with eight strikeouts in four games at Los Angeles.

Garrett Richards (11-9, 3.55) allowed a first-inning, three-run homer to Abreu and no other runs over the next seven innings of a 9-4 victory last season in his only career start against the White Sox. The right-hander has yielded three runs over six innings in each of his last two starts overall.

Teammate Mike Trout is 0 for 9 in the last three games and 0 for 6 with four strikeouts and a walk in a seven plate appearances against Danks.

Preview: Braves (53-65) at Padres (57-62)
        Game: 2
        Venue: PETCO Park
        Date: August 18, 2015 10:10 PM EDT

The San Diego Padres had big plans to contend in 2015 and made a plethora of bold offseason moves, one being the signing of James Shields to long-term contract.

San Diego's stance made Matt Wisler expendable before he was moved in one of two blockbuster trades with the Atlanta Braves.

Wisler faces the Padres for the first time when he opposes Shields on Tuesday night at Petco Park.

San Diego (57-62) traded away six of its top 10 prospects in an attempt for an immediate rebuild after missing the playoffs for the eighth straight year in 2014. General manager A.J. Preller hooked up with Atlanta twice in his flurry of deals, first acquiring Justin Upton for prospects Max Fried, Jace Peterson, Dustin Peterson and Mallex Smith in December.

One day before the season started, Preller dealt Wisler - then the club's No. 1 prospect - along with Cameron Maybin, Carlos Quentin and prospect Jordan Paroubeck to Atlanta for closer Craig Kimbrel and Melvin Upton on April 5.

Kimbrel allowed a run but earned his 34th save - third-most in the majors - against his former team Monday as the Padres (57-62) won 5-3 for their fifth victory in seven tries. Justin Upton, Matt Kemp, Yonder Alonso and Will Venable had two hits apiece.

Kemp also homered and is batting .385 during a 10-game hitting streak, but San Diego is 10 1/2 games behind NL West-leading Los Angeles as Preller's plan has fallen flat.

Maybin homered for the second straight game and is batting .440 with five extra-base hits during a six-game hitting streak. He's batting .350 in five games against the Padres this season.

"Now, he's doing what he is capable of doing," Jace Peterson told MLB's official website. "It's been a lot of fun to watch."

The rebuilding Braves (53-65) have dropped 16 of 18 on the road and six of eight overall as Wisler (5-2, 4.74 ERA) takes the mound looking to make San Diego feel some regret for trading him.

The right-hander allowed 12 runs in 10 innings over his previous two starts before giving up two in five innings Wednesday, but the bullpen fell apart in a 9-6 loss to Tampa Bay.

Wisler has allowed two runs in three of his last four road starts as he prepares to oppose Shields (8-5, 3.89), who is coming off a rough outing.

The right-hander tied his season high with four walks and gave up five runs in 6 1-3 innings of a 7-3 loss to Cincinnati on Wednesday. He also balked in a run in the third.

Shields surrendered three homers in his previous start, a 4-3 defeat to Philadelphia on Aug. 7, and the Padres have lost his last five outings.

"I have to do my job and go as deep as I can in the game and try to keep the team in the game," Shields said. "Unfortunately it didn't work out."

He gave up five runs in 5 1-3 innings of a 6-5 loss to the Braves on June 9. Nick Markakis had two hits and Andrelton Simmons drove in three runs off Shields in that contest.

MLB roundup: Orioles sweep slumping A's

BALTIMORE -- Steve Clevenger hit a three-run homer and Chris Tillman won his seventh straight decision as the Baltimore Orioles completed a sweep of their four-game series against the Oakland Athletics with a 4-2 victory on Monday night.

Baltimore (61-56) has won four straight games and the A's (51-69) have dropped seven in a row. The Orioles banged out 11 homers in the series and scored 34 runs.

Clevenger has been hot in both of his brief stints with the Orioles this season. The designated hitter went 4-for-6 in Sunday's 18-2 rout of the A's and now has a .417 average with one homer and five RBIs in seven games in 2015.

His three-run homer, which came off A's starter Sonny Gray (12-5) and gave the Orioles a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning, was Clevenger's first home run as an Oriole and the second of the Baltimore native's major league career.

          Angels 2, White Sox 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- C.J. Cron's one-out home run in the seventh inning snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted Los Angeles over Chicago.

Cron's homer came off Carlos Rodon, who was coming off seven scoreless innings against the Angels in his last start. But Cron's homer and a home run by designated hitter Albert Pujols in the second inning were just enough to push the Angels over the top.

          Indians 8, Red Sox 2

BOSTON -- Danny Salazar continued his marvelous run of pitching. The Cleveland right-hander turned in his seventh straight strong performance and Lonnie Chisenhall drove in three runs to lead the Indians to a rout of Boston at Fenway Park.

Facing a team that had just scored 45 runs on 60 hits against Seattle over the weekend, Salazar allowed a run on four hits in seven innings, yielding only a home run to Travis Shaw that gave Boston a 1-0 lead in the third inning.

Over his last seven starts, Salazar (11-6) is 4-2 with a 1.45 ERA. Coming into the game, the opposition was batting .144 against him in his previous six starts.

          Diamondbacks 4, Pirates 1

PITTSBURGH --- Jeremy Hellickson won on the road for the first time since May and Jake Lamb homered to lead Arizona to a victory over Pittsburgh.

Hellickson (9-8) allowed one run and three hits in 5 1/3 innings while striking out four and walking one. The right-hander had gone 0-4 with an 8.67 ERA in his previous six road starts since winning May 30 at Milwaukee.

Lamb connected for his fifth home run in the fourth inning, a solo shot off Gerrit Cole (14-7) that put the Diamondbacks ahead 4-0 and helped snap the National League wild card-leading Pirates’ four-game winning streak.

          Cardinals 2, Giants 1

ST. LOUIS -- On a day where they put one outfielder on the disabled list and may have lost another one with an injury, St. Louis found a different way to win.

Mark Reynolds broke a tie in the bottom of the eighth inning with a fielder's choice bouncer as St. Louis eked out a win over San Francisco at Busch Stadium.

Stephen Piscotty lined a one-out triple off reliever Hunter Strickland (2-2), followed by an intentional walk to Brandon Moss. Reynolds chopped a 2-2 pitch to shortstop Brandon Crawford. Eschewing a toss to Kelby Tomlinson for the force at second, Crawford ran to second, tagged it and then spun around to throw to first. His throw sailed wide of the bag as Piscotty scored the winning run.

          Marlins 6, Brewers 2

MILWAUKEE -- Derek Dietrich hit his eighth home run of the season and Justin Nicolino worked into the seventh inning as Miami beat Milwaukee at Miller Park.

Nicolino (8-7) walked two, struck out three and held Milwaukee to two runs and two hits in 6 2/3 innings to win for the third time in four starts.

The Miami offense did its part, collecting 12 hits, including three by Adeiny Hechavarra and two each by Justin Bour and Dee Gordon, who also drove in two runs and scored.

          Rangers 4, Mariners 3

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Adrian Beltre did plenty of damage with his bat, but his eye proved the game winner in Texas' victory over Seattle.

Beltre went 3-for-4 with three RBIs but didn't swing the bat in drawing a bases-loaded walk in the ninth inning to give Texas its fifth consecutive win. The Rangers have also won their last eight games at home and are three games above .500 for the first time since June 23.

The Mariners have dropped three of four on their current six-game road trip and lost to the Rangers for only the third time in 10 meetings this season.

          Yankees 8, Twins 7 (10 innings)

NEW YORK -- Chase Headley had a bases-loaded groundout with nobody out in the bottom of the 10th inning, lifting New York to a victory over Minnesota.

New York opened the 10th with doubles from Greg Bird and Brian McCann against Glen Perkins (1-3) in a span of five pitches. After Perkins intentionally walked Carlos Beltran, Headley came up with Minnesota using a five-man infield alignment and slapped a ground ball to Eduardo Nunez, who did not field it cleanly and pinch-runner Brendan Ryan scored.

Closer Andrew Miller (1-2) struck out two in the 10th for his first victory with the Yankees. He was New York's sixth reliever after spot starter Bryan Mitchell took a line drive from Eduardo Nunez off his face in the second inning and was diagnosed with a broken nose.

          Rays 9, Astros 2

HOUSTON -- Right-hander Erasmo Ramirez pitched effectively under duress and benefited from an early offensive surge courtesy of Tim Beckham as Tampa Bay clubbed Houston at Minute Maid Park.

Ramirez (10-4) became the third Tampa Bay pitcher to record 10 wins in a season after he was acquired via trade, joining Mark Hendrickson (2004) and Matt Garza (2008). He joined that duo by stranding three baserunners over his first two innings and working around a pair of one-out singles in the fifth, departing with two outs in the sixth up 6-2.

The Rays provided Ramirez ample run support early and piled on with three additional runs in the ninth inning. The right-handed tandem of Steve Geltz and Brandon Gomes combined to work 2 1/3 hitless innings with four strikeouts to keep the Astros at bay.

          Padres 5, Braves 3

SAN DIEGO -- Will Venable had two RBIs, Matt Kemp and Yonder Alonso homered and Colin Rea won his second straight start as San Diego defeated Atlanta.

Rea, who prevailed in his major league debut on Aug. 11 against Cincinnati, pitched 5 2/3 innings and was charged with two runs and five hits. Craig Kimbrel, the third Padres reliever, pitched the ninth for his 34th save of the season.

Alonso homered in the eighth inning. Venable drove in two of the Padres' three runs in the second. Kemp, with a 10-game hitting streak, belted his 14th homer of the year in the fifth.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the Day: Mets at Orioles
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since losing his first three decisions away from home this season, deGrom is 5-1 over his last seven road starts.

New York Mets at Baltimore Orioles (+101, 7.5)

Jacob deGrom goes for his team-high 11th victory as the New York Mets kick off a nine-game road trip on Tuesday night with the first of two interleague contests against the Baltimore Orioles. The Mets, who hold a 4 1/2-game lead over Washington atop the National League East, will be trying to rebound after getting swept at home in a three-game series versus Pittsburgh.

DeGrom is unbeaten over his last six starts, not allowing a run in half of them to lower his ERA to 2.03 - second in the majors to Zack Greinke of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Orioles opened a 10-game homestand with a four-game sweep of the Oakland Athletics to snag the second wild card in the American League. Seldom-used designated hitter Steve Clevenger followed up Sunday's four-hit performance with the second homer of his career, a three-run shot in Monday's 4-2 victory that moved Baltimore five games over .500 for the first time since July 2. Orioles right-hander Kevin Gausman, who has pitched at least seven innings in three of his past four starts, will oppose deGrom.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), MASN (Baltimore)

LINE HISTORY: The Orioles opened in the +107 range but are now +101. The total opened and remains at 7.5.

INJURY REPORT: Mets - 1B Lucas Duda (Questionable, back), 3B David Wright (60-day DL, back). Orioles - C Matt Wieters (Probable, hamstring).

WEATHER: Temperatures expected to be in the low-80s under mostly cloudy skies. Wind will blow out to center at around 6 mph.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Jacob deGrom (11-6, 2.03 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Kevin Gausman (2-4, 4.48)

DeGrom matched his season high with four walks last time out, but he more than compensated by striking out 10 and limiting Colorado to two hits over seven scoreless innings. It was the fifth quality start in as many outings since the All-Star break for deGrom, who is 2-0 and has permitted a total of six runs in that span. Since losing his first three decisions away from home this season, deGrom is 5-1 over his last seven road starts.

Gausman struck out eight and yielded three runs over seven innings in his last outing, but it went for naught as the Orioles were no-hit by Seattle's Hisashi Iwakuma. He was tagged for six runs in 5 2/3 innings by the Los Angeles Angels in his previous turn, which followed a pair of solid outings in which he gave up two runs over 14 2/3 innings. Gausman is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in six appearances (three starts) at home.

                    TRENDS:

                    * Under is 5-0 in the last five meetings.
                    * Mets are 8-0 in the last eight meetings.
                    * Mets are 17-4 in deGroms last 21 starts as a favorite.
                    * Orioles are 0-6 in their last six interleague games as an underdog.

CONSENSUS: Fifty-nine percent of users are backing the visiting Mets.

Threat of thunderstorms at Wrigley Field

According to weather forecasts, there is a 64 percent chance of thunderstorms in Chicago as the Cubs host the Detroit Tigers at Wrigley Field Tuesday evening.

Anibal Sanchez is expected to start for the visitors with Jason Hammel probable to take the mound for the Cubbies.

Top home umpire at PNC Park Tuesday

Umpire Jim Reynolds is the top "homer ump" in the bigs this season and is probable to call balls and strikes at PNC Park in Pittsburgh when the Pirates host the Arizona Diamondbacks Tuesday evening.

Home teams have gone 20-4 (83.3 percent) when Reynolds works behind home plate so far this season. If bettors had risked $100 on the home team in each of Reynolds' games, they'd be up 15.22 units.

Home teams have averaged 5.46 runs scored per game, compared to 3.17 runs against.

The Pirates (-213) are expected to start Francisco Liriano while Chase Anderson is probable to start for the Dbacks (+195).

-- Atlanta (9-15) took care of business at home as a favorite, topping Connecticut (12-12). The Dream have now covered three in a row, tying a season high. They have yet to cover four straight, and look to change that in a trip to New York (16-7) Friday in Manhattan.

-- Phoenix (15-9) was surprised at home Sunday by Indiana (14-9), who finished the week unbeaten at 2-0 SU/ATS. The Mercury have dropped two of their past three games, and are just 3-9 ATS over their past 12 games.

-- The Fever continue to turn up the intensity, covering for the sixth time in the past seven games after starting the season 5-10-1 ATS in their past 16 games. After a four-game 'over' streak, the 'under' has hit in the past two for Indiana.

-- Los Angeles (8-16) put the brakes on a two-game losing streak and non-cover streak with a win over Chicago (15-11). The Sparks have had the 'under' connect in four of the past five outings.

-- Tulsa (11-14) picked up a surprise win in New York to snap a 10-game losing streak. The Shock is also just 2-8-1 ATS over the past 11 contests. One thing you can count on from the Shock is the 'over', which has hit in five of the past six games.

Preview: Mercury (15-9) at Shock (11-14)

                              Date: August 18, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

The Tulsa Shock are hoping the end of a 10-game slide will help propel them onto a winning streak.

They're getting closer to beating the Phoenix Mercury, their likely opponent in the postseason.

The Shock look to end a five-game slide in this series and win for the first time at home since the league approved their relocation to the Dallas-Fort Worth area as they meet the Mercury on Tuesday night.

Tulsa (11-14) stunned Eastern Conference-leading New York 81-76 on Saturday to split a two-game trip and win for the first time since July 11. Odyssey Sims had a season-high 27 points and seven assists and Riquna Williams added 15 points.

"Now we are about to start a winning streak," Sims said. "It starts here, and we are going to build each day and get back."

Now the Shock can end a five-game home slide in their third game at the Bank of Oklahoma Center since the July 23 announcement that WNBA owners unanimously approved the plan to relocate the franchise. Fans have been wearing 'Save Our Shock' shirts since.

It would provide a boost on and off the court to defeat the Mercury (15-9), who are in second place in the West with the Shock in third and on course for a first-round playoff matchup.

Phoenix is 3-0 in the season series, though Tulsa is poised to break through. The Mercury posted an 86-55 win in the first meeting July 2 and won 78-66 on July 30 before needing DeWanna Bonner's 3-pointer at the overtime buzzer for an 87-84 win Aug. 4 in a contest in which they trailed by 12 points in the third quarter.

The Mercury fell 75-63 to Indiana on Sunday night. Candice Dupree and Brittney Griner had 12 points apiece and Bonner - fifth in the league with 16.8 points per game - was held to nine.

"We didn't give our best effort tonight and I think it's really come from how we've been practicing in the last few days, a little fatigue sneaking in and we've gotta be able to fight through that," coach Sandy Brondello said.

The Mercury missed all 13 of their 3-point attempts. That may not be an issue Tuesday since they are shooting 45.2 percent from beyond the arc versus the Shock.

"We make some of those shots, it changes everything a little bit," Brondello said.

Tulsa forward Plenette Pierson's status is uncertain after the All-Star injured her knee against the Liberty.

Preview: Fever (14-9) at Sparks (8-16)

                                Date: August 18, 2015 10:30 PM EDT

Playing their best basketball of the season, the Indiana Fever should feel confident against an opponent that's given them little reason to be in recent years.

The Fever continue a four-game road trip Tuesday night looking to avoid an eighth consecutive loss to the Los Angeles Sparks.

Indiana hasn't bested the Sparks since the 2011 season and last prevailed at Staples Center on Aug. 10, 2010.

The Fever (14-9) appear ready for this test, however, after beginning the trek with impressive double-digit victories over contenders Washington and Phoenix. They've won six of seven since the All-Star break and 11 of 14 after a 3-6 start.

The Fever handed the Mercury a 75-63 defeat Sunday despite centers Natalie Achonwa and Erlana Larkins both unavailable and leading scorer Tamika Catchings held to four points on 2-of-11 shooting. Lynetta Kizer tied a career high with 19 points to help offset those absences, however, and Indiana held Phoenix to an 0-for-13 effort from 3-point range.

"I'm really proud of our team tonight," coach Stephanie White told the Fever's official site. "That was a heckuva road win against a really good team in a tough environment."

The surge has moved Indiana into a second-place tie with Washington in the Eastern Conference, two games behind New York. The Fever climbed past Chicago in the standings after the resurgent Sparks (8-16) downed the Sky 76-64 Sunday for their fifth win in seven games.

Los Angeles' improvement can be traced to Candace Parker's return to the team after missing the season's first two months. The two-time WNBA MVP was a difference maker against Chicago, totaling 21 points and a career-high 10 assists.

The Sparks also shined defensively, limiting the high-scoring Sky to their second-lowest shooting output of the season at 32.4 percent.

"We know that when they score more than 70 points, they win games, so that was definitely a point of emphasis for us," said guard Kristi Toliver, who added 16 points. "We did a good job with (Elena) Delle Donne and their main shooters."

Los Angeles, which leads San Antonio by 1 1/2 games for fourth in the West, also had guard Alana Beard back after the four-time All-Star sat out an Aug. 11 loss to Seattle. Beard has played in just nine games due to plantar fasciitis.

The Fever will have Achonwa back after the talented rookie missed the last three games while helping Canada to a gold medal in the FIBA Americas Championships. Larkins remains sidelined indefinitely with a left leg injury.
