    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Look at the eight highest paid QBs in the NFL; no Brady, no Peyton Manning.

-- Jameis Winston's debut: 9-19 for 131 yards. Not great, not terrible.

-- Evan Gattis is first player since 1980 to have 9+ triples but no stolen bases.

-- Browns' #3 QB Connor Shaw needs season-ending thumb surgery.

-- KC's backup QB is Chase Daniel; he looked very sharp in this week's game.

-- Arizona Cardinals were 6-0 LY when Carson Palmer started; if they cannot keep him healthier this year, their high expectations will go down the drain.

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend......

    13) Stat of the Day: Mets finish the season 0-13 against the Cubs/Pirates. It looks like the Mets will win the NL East, while Cubs/Pirates will have to play a play-in game in October just to get into the regular playoffs.

    12) Pittsburgh relief pitchers have now won 16 straight decisions; they're 17-4 in last 21 games where winning run scored after the sixth inning, after being 3-12 in first 15 such games this season.

    11) Saturday night in Denver, Justin Upton got mad and threw his helmet in the San Diego dugout; he missed what he was aiming at and the helmet hit Yonder Alonso in the head, knocking him out of the game. Alonso didn't play Sunday, but a lefty was on hill for Colorado, so he might not have played anyway. Upton played Sunday.

    10) "If you're not first, you're last." Wen a pro golfer says that, you know he's really rich already. Jordan Spieth said that earlier this week; well, he made $1.1M when he finished second last night. Last place was $17,300. Uh huh.

    9) Rams are staying in California for the early part of this week, practicing against the Dallas Cowboys in Oxnard- they lost in Oakland Friday, play Jeff Fisher's old team the Titans on national TV Sunday night.

    8) Do people really wake up at 9am on Sunday mornings to watch NFL pregame shows? Really? Can't remember the last time I saw 9am on a Sunday.

    7) Sharpest woman in sports TV is Jody Jackson, who works in Phoenix, doing Diamondback pre/post-game shows. She knows her stuff, seems like a nice person who is respected by coaches-- she asks good questions.

    6) If Ollie shot free throws underhanded in Hoosiers, why can't Dwight Howard?

    5) Chargers signed Philip Rivers to a 4-year extension worth $65M or so, with little more than half of it guaranteed; that solves one of two big questions for San Diego, the other being where will they call home after this season? .

    4) They showed Back to the Future after the Dodger game Saturday night in Chavez Ravine; Lea Thompson threw out the first ball before the game.

    3) If Cardinal coach Bruce Arians can turn Logan Thomas into an NFL QB, they should send him over to the Middle East next to fix that mess. Thomas looks like he should be a bigtime QB, but he has never played like one, not even in college.

    2) Jimmy Garoppolo threw 30 passes for New England Thursday night; wonder what the record is for most passes thrown by a QB in an exhibition game?

    1) How committed are the Nationals to Matt Williams as manager? They look like a dead team, a team that sags as soon as something bad happens. They're not out of the NL East race yet, but they've lost six in a row and need a bolt of energy. Fast.

Home teams not perfect, but have strong showing Sunday

Home teams may not have been perfect Sunday, like they were last week, but they still had a very strong showing going 12-3 straight up.

The strong showing Sunday was part of a bigger trend the past week, where the home team has been a solid bet, going 66-25 over the last seven days. Good for a success rate of 72.53 percent.

With 10 games on the schedule Monday, check out our Scores and Matchups page for all you need to know to see if home teams can keep it up.

Under wagers hot as Salazar continues to roll

Cleveland Indians starter Danny Salazar has strung together six straight quality starts, so it's no surprise Under bets have gone 5-1 over that stretch and have cashed in his last four starts.

Over those previous six outings, Salazar has given up just seven earned runs while tossing 42 2/3 innings, good for a sparkling 1.48 ERA.

The 25-year-old struck out eight and allowed one run on four hits and five walks over 7 1/3 innings to earn a win over the New York Yankees on Wednesday.

Salazar is expected to get the start at Fenway Park as the Indians (-147) visit the Boston Red Sox (+136). The total is presently at 9.

Road teams cashing bets in Vanover's games

Road teams have posted a record of 4-1 in the last five ball games that umpire Larry Vanover has worked behind home plate. Vanover will be tasked with working the dish in Baltimore when the Orioles host the Oakland A's Monday evening.

Vanover's numbers still skew toward the home team as hosts have a 12-9 record in his 21 ball games behind home plate.

Chance of rain, thunderstorms at Yankee Stadium

There will be an 18 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms in New York for Monday's series opener between the Yankees and Twins.

There will also be a slight seven mile per hour wind blowing out to left field during the game.

Right-hander Kyle Gibson gets the call for the Twins, while the Yanks counter with rookie right-hander Bryan Mitchell. New York is currently a -163 favorite with a total of 8.5.

Chance of rain, thunderstorms in St. Louis

There is a 24 percent chance of rain and a chance of thunderstorms for the series opener between the San Francisco Giants and the Cardinals in St. Louis Monday.

There will also be a very slight wind blowing out to left field at five miles per hour at game time.

Chris Heston (3.38 ERA, 12-10 O/U) gets the ball for the Giants, while Michael Wacha (2.93 ERA, 9-12 O/U) is expected to start for the -149 favored Cardinals. The total sits at 7.0 runs.

                    Pirates dominating Cole's home starts

The Pittsburgh Pirates love when Gerrit Cole takes the mound at PNC Park, going 22-5 in his last 27 starts there.

Cole (2.48 ERA, 8-13 O/U) will take his familiar spot on the mound when the Pirates host Jeremy Hellickson (4.73 ERA, 11-8 O/U) and the Arizona Diamondbacks Monday night.

The Pirates are currently big -209 favorites and the total currently sits at 7.0 runs.

Braves stinging backers in San Diego visits

The Atlanta Braves have posted a terrible record of 0-7 in their last seven meetings with the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.

The Padres have hammered the Braves over the course of those seven games, outscoring their NL East opponents 40-19. The Braves' last win in San Diego came on Aug. 28, 2012 in a 2-0 win.

Williams Perez is slated to start for the Braves (+135) as the two clubs open a three-game set Monday. San Diego (-146) is expected to counter with Colin Rea.

Game of the Day: Giants at Cardinals

San Francisco Giants at St. Louis Cardinals (-148, 7)

The San Francisco Giants cruised past one postseason contender over the weekend, but the road to first place in the National League West only gets tougher. The Giants will try to extend their winning streak to five when they begin a seven-game road trip with a visit to the major-league best St. Louis Cardinals on Monday.

The Giants are in the midst of a brutal stretch that began with four straight losses at the Chicago Cubs from August 6-9 but got better with a split against the American League West-leading Houston Astros and a four-game sweep of the Washington Nationals, capped by Madison Bumgarner’s 14-strikeout, three-hit, one-homer shutout on Sunday. San Francisco will endure five straight series against teams with superior records beginning with the Cardinals and continuing with Pittsburgh, the Cubs, St. Louis again and the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers to close the month. The Cardinals (75-42) are five games up on Pittsburgh in the Central and took two of three from Miami over the weekend to claim a fifth straight series victory. San Francisco will face a tough test in Monday’s opener against 14-game winner Michael Wacha, while the Cardinals square off against rookie Chris Heston.

Giants RH Chris Heston (11-7, 3.38 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (14-4, 2.93)

Heston is winless in his last three starts and is coming off a tough-luck loss against Houston on Wednesday. The offense failed to provide any support for the 27-year-old, who allowed one run and three hits in 6 1/3 innings but suffered the loss in a 2-0 final. Heston is making his first start against St. Louis and is 6-2 with a 4.45 ERA in 11 road starts.

Wacha earned his third straight win on Wednesday by holding Pittsburgh to two runs despite nine hits and three walks in six innings. The Texas A&M product held Cincinnati and Colorado scoreless over seven innings in each of his previous two turns. Wacha scattered three hits over six scoreless frames in his lone career regular-season start against San Francisco but served up three runs while recording one out in relief at the Giants during Game 5 of the 2014 NLCS last fall.

                      TRENDS:

                      * Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings.

                      * Cardinals are 4-1 in Wacha's last five starts as a favorite.

Seventy-three percent of users are backing the Cardinals.

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the mid-week major-league schedule:

                        Capital Punishment

The Washington Nationals have completely fallen apart since the All Star break, and after being shutout in San Francisco on Sunday they've lost six straight.

They are batting a major league worst .222 in the second half, and their star studded pitching staff has been underwhelming. Max Scherzer has been tagged for 10 runs on 15 hits over nine innings in his last two starts, and he surrendered five home runs in those two games.

They will be in Colorado for a three game series versus the Rockies this week, and you might want to think twice before backing the Nats as a road favorite.

                        Rangers On The Move

Texas has won four straight heading into a three game series at home versus Seattle, and they are now only a half game back of L.A. in the Wild Card race.

They send Cole Hamels to the mound Monday night, and the veteran lefty is still looking for his first win as a Ranger. His last start for Philly was a no-hitter at Wrigley, and you have to think it's only a matter of time before he figures things out in Texas.

                        Look Out For The Tigers

Miguel Cabrera is back, and he's already making his presence felt for the Tigers.

Cabrera was 4-for-10 with a home run in three games at Houston since his return. The Tigers will play two games at Wrigley on Tuesday and Wednesday night, and Cabrera has a history of punishing Cubs pitchers.

He will face Jon Lester on Wednesday, and he's 14-for-25 (.560) with a home run and four RBIs lifetime versus the southpaw.

                        Hitting Notes

                        * Buster Posey is tearing up the National League, hitting .366 since the All Star break. He's now third in the league batting .327, and his 78 RBIs are just eight fewer than Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado who are tied for first. He's facing Lance Lynn on Tuesday, and he's 4-for-6 with a home run and four RBIs lifetime versus Lynn.

                        * Chris Davis has really turned it on, he's hitting .336 since the All Star break. Davis was 7-for-15 with three home runs and six RBIs in a three game series at home versus Oakland over the weekend, and he'll look to stay hot at Camden Yards with the Orioles hosting the Mets on Tuesday and Wednesday.

                        Pitching Notes

                        * Madison Bumgarner is starting to look like the World Series MVP that he was last year. He tossed a complete game (one-hit) shutout, striking out 14 in a win over the Nats on Sunday. That wasn't all, he was 2-for-3 with a double and a home run in the victory. His next start comes on Friday in Pittsburgh.

                        * Dallas Keuchel allowed just one run on six hits, striking out eight in seven innings in a home win over Detroit his last time out. He's been unbeatable at home, boasting a flawless record of 11-0, with a 1.26 ERA in 13 starts at Minute Maid Park so far. His next start comes at home against Tampa on Wednesday.

                        Totals Streak

                        * The Seattle Mariners are coming off a three game series in Boston, and the scores in those games looked more like what you would expect in football games. Seattle did it's fair share of scoring, but lost two of three getting outscored 45-21. The Mariners have seen the total go over in six straight road games, and that trend could continue here in Texas this week.

                        Injury Notes

*Phil Hughes was placed on the 15 day disabled list with lower back inflammation on August 13. It's a big blow for the Twins, who are just 1.5 back in the American League Wild Card race.

*Randal Grichuck left Sunday's game against Miami with a sore elbow, and he will undergo an MRI on Monday. The Cardinals LF is having a fine season batting .284 with 15 home runs and 44 RBIs.

                        Weather Notes

                        * There is a 33 percent chance of thunderstorms leading into game time in St. Louis Monday, but that should decrease to 15 percent by the time the Cardinals host the San Francisco Giants.

                        * There is as much as a 56 percent chance of thunderstorms when the Pirates host the Arizona Diamondbacks in Pittsburgh Tuesday.

                        Umpire Notes

                        * Road teams are 4-1 in the last five ball games that umpire Larry Vanover has worked behind home plate. He'll be calling balls and strikes in Baltimore when the Orioles host the Oakland A's Monday.

                          Monday, August 17

Blue Jays' starting pitching on a record-setting run

The Toronto Blue Jays have long been known as an offensive powerhouse, but one past weakness that's since become a major strength for the team is its starting pitching.

Toronto starters have allowed three earned runs or less in 20 consecutive starts, a mark good enough to set a team record. The Bluebirds begin a brief two-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday and are scheduled to send knuckleballer R.A. Dickey to the bump.

The Jays are 5-0 in Dickey's last five outings, with the 40-year-old allowing just six runs during that span.

At the time of writing, the line and total for the interleague clash were off the board.

Marlins have been good bait for Over bettors

The Miami Marlins have been a red-hot Over wager of late, posting an Over/Under record of 13-2 in their last 15 ball games heading into Monday's date with the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park.

Over bets have cashed in back-to-back games after the Marlins lost to the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 3-1 in their series opener Friday.

The hot run of Overs improves the Marlins' season-to-date O/U mark to 56-56-5.

With Justin Nicolino slated to get the ball for the Marlins and Matt Garza expected to start for the Brewers, the total is currently sitting at 8.

White Sox cashing Overs in recent matchups

The Chicago White Sox have been a fantastic play for bettors banking on high-scoring games in recent weeks, going above the closing total in 16 out of their last 21 contests.

Carlos Rodon is listed as the probable starter for the ChiSox in Monday's tilt with the Los Angeles Angels. The Halos are scheduled to send southpaw Andrew Heaney to the mound.

Pinnacle Sports has set a total of 7.5 for the AL clash.

Overs aplenty when Padres face righties

Bettors backing the Over have been cashing in at a rapid pace when the San Diego Padres have faced right-handed pitching in recent weeks.

In the Friars' last 13 outings against righties, the Over has gone a sizzling 12-1. That's the situation the Pads find themselves in once again Monday when right-hander Williams Perez and the Atlanta Braves invade Petco Field.

San Diego is slated to counter with Colin Rea. As of this writing, sportsbooks were dealing a 7 run total for the game.

Brewers on a hot streak when tabbed as faves

The Milwaukee Brewers aren't always favorites, but when they have closed as chalk recently, they've been winning ball games.

The Brew Crew have won their last six ball games when lines have closed with them as the favorites, including a three game sweep of the lowly Philadelphia Phillies over the weekend.

Brewers' backers will look for that to extend to seven as Matt Garza takes the mound at Miller Park against the Miami Marlins Monday evening. Milwaukee is presently -152 with Miami +140.

Twins are ice-cold against AL East opposition

The Minnesota Twins visit Yankee Stadium for a three-game set beginning Monday but have been futile against AL East teams, posting an 0-6 record in their last six ball games against the division.

The Twins dropped the last two games of a three game set with the New York Yankees at the end of July before being swept in a four-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays one week later.

Season to date, the Twins have gone 13-10 against the East, so they'll be looking to build on that record with 10 games comng up against the East starting with the Yanks.

Kyle Gibson will look to end the drought for the Twins (+141) while Bryan Mitchell is the probable starter for the Yankees (-153).
