Giants slumping when Bumgarner faces Nats

The San Francisco Giants have lost their last five ball games that Madison Bumgarner has started against the Washington Nationals.

Included in those five games is a start against the Nats back on July 4 of this season when the 26-year-old southpaw gave up six earned runs over five innings of work in a 9-3 Giants' loss.

In eight career starts against the Nationals, Bumgarner is 2-4 with a 3.42 ERA. He's scheduled to get the ball when the Giants (-156) and Nats (+144) conclude a four-game series at AT&T Park. The Giants have won the first three games of the series.

Rays-Rangers total heading south

The total for Sunday's contest between the Tampa Bay Rays and Texas Rangers opened at 9 but dropped to 8.5 with first pitch a few hours away.

The two clubs conclude their three game set at Globe Life Park in Arlington after the Rangers have taken the first two meetings with the Under cashing Friday and the Over hitting Saturday.

Probable starters for Sunday's matchup pit Drew Smyly for the Rays (-107) against Yovani Gallardo for the Rangers (-101).

Astros hot at home versus lefty starters

The Houston Astros head into Sunday's meeting with the Detroit Tigers having gone 8-0 in their last eight home games versus left-handed starters.

Against Houston's bats, those southpaw starters have given up 36 earned runs over 38 1/3 innings of work in those eight games (8.45 ERA).

The Tigers are scheduled to send lefty Matt Boyd to the bump at Minute Maid Park Sunday afternoon. The Stros, expected to counter with Mike Fiers, are presently priced around -184.

Home teams hot when Dreckman works the plate

Home teams have posted a record of 5-0 in the last five ball games that umpire Bruce Dreckman has worked behind home plate. That's where Dreckman will be then the Philadelphia Phillies visit the Milwaukee Brewers Sunday afternoon.

Dreckman has called balls and strikes in 12 games this season and home teams have gone 6-6 in those games.

The last time a visiting team won with Dreckman behind the dish as on May 20 when the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Miami Marlins 6-1 in Florida. This will be Dreckman's first game behind home plate since June 20.

Sale has been exceptional in interleague starts

Chicago White Sox ace Chris Sale has been especially strong against opponents from the National League this season. Furthermore, the Pale Hose have gone 7-0 in Sale's last seven starts against teams from the senior circuit.

This season, Sale is 2-0 with a 1.57 ERA and incredible 0.78 WHIP in three starts against the NL - one of which coming against the Chicago Cubs, the team he'll face Sunday afternoon.

In that start, Sale went 7 innings and fanned 10 Cubs batters in a 5-1 win back on July 11.

The Sox are presently -187 while the Cubs, who are expected to start Dan Haren, are +172.
