Preview: Sun (12-11) at Dream (8-15)

          Date: August 16, 2015 3:00 PM EDT

The schedule is about to lighten up at a good time for the Connecticut Sun.

They have the Atlanta Dream to thank.

Sunday is the first of three matchups over 10 days for the Sun against the Eastern Conference's last-place team.

Throw in a road game Friday night against reeling Tulsa, which suffered its 10th straight loss Wednesday in Connecticut, and the Sun are presented with a good chance to re-enter the postseason picture.

Connecticut better take advantage of this four-game stretch - the other three are against an Atlanta club which has lost seven of eight - because five of its final seven games come against three of the WNBA's top four teams - New York, Chicago and Phoenix. The Sun (12-11) are 1 1/2 games behind Indiana and Washington for one of the East's final two playoffs.

A 1-6 combined mark against those two teams stings, and the Sun have floundered of late with two losses in their last three games after falling 90-78 at home to New York on Friday.

Alex Bentley and Kelsey Bone were the only two Connecticut players to score in double figures with 19 and 17 points, respectively. The two have combined for 48 percent of Connecticut's points in the last two games.

Bentley has been boom-or-bust lately. Over the past seven games, she's scored at least 19 points three times and has been held below five in three others.

Angel McCoughtry has been nothing but productive for Atlanta and has been on a roll lately, averaging 26.0 points in the last three games. McCoughtry scored 32 and had a season-high six steals in an 84-82 loss to Minnesota on Friday, her third time eclipsing 30 points this season.

The Dream (8-15) looked to have that one in hand against the WNBA's top team but blew a 16-point lead in the second half.

Atlanta, 5 1/2 games back of the East's final playoff spot, has dropped three straight to Connecticut after losing both matchups this season. Bone and Shekinna Stricklen each scored 18 in an 82-64 home win June 14 after Bentley led the Sun with 17 in a 75-70 victory in Atlanta on June 7. McCoughtry scored 24 in the most recent matchup but just 10 in the first.

Preview: Lynx (18-6) at Mystics (13-9)

            Date: August 16, 2015 4:00 PM EDT

The WNBA-best Minnesota Lynx seem to be hitting their stride with Maya Moore playing at an MVP level and fellow All-Star Seimone Augustus back in the lineup.

The Washington Mystics hope to have an answer after the pair burned them in last year's season series.

The visiting Lynx continue their chase for home-court advantage throughout the playoffs as they go for a fourth straight win Sunday in the opener of a home-and-home set with Washington.

These teams haven't met since June 2014, when Moore and Augustus combined for 39 points in Minnesota's 75-65 home win. In the other meeting last season, Moore had 34 points and Augustus added 24 in an 89-77 victory at the Verizon Center.

Moore, second in the league with 21.5 points per game, is playing some of her best basketball heading into this matchup. She had 22 of her season-high 36 points in the second half Friday to key Minnesota's rally from a 16-point deficit in an 84-82 win at Atlanta.

The reigning MVP also had 32 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals in an 83-76 home win over San Antonio on Tuesday. She hasn't had three consecutive 30-point performances since posting four straight to open the 2014 season.

Sylvia Fowles chipped in 19 points, eight rebounds and five blocks Friday when the Lynx (18-6) moved into position to tie a season high with a fourth win in a row.

They also welcomed back Augustus, who ranks second on the team with 14.7 points per game. The six-time All-Star should be able to shake off some rust after finishing with six points on 3-of-13 shooting after missing 10 games due to arthroscopic surgery on her right knee.

"I don't think I'm really in game shape (yet)," Augustus said. "But it's a process of getting back out there and getting back into the groove again."

The Lynx, who shoot a WNBA-best 45.3 percent from the field, have scored at least 82 points five times during their current 6-2 stretch. They lead the Western Conference by 2 1/2 games and hold a slim edge over New York for the best record overall.

The Mystics (13-9) are tied with Indiana for the final two playoff spots in the East. Since a season-high five-game winning streak to close July, they've alternated between wins and losses over their first five games this month.

Washington had a five-game home winning streak snapped in Tuesday's 73-62 loss to Indiana.

"We'll learn from it," said Tierra Ruffin-Pratt, who had a team-high 17 points. "We'll come in and watch film."

Stefanie Dolson averages a team-high 12.5 points, but she's been held to eight or fewer in four of her past five games. All-Star Emma Meesseman was scoreless in 17 minutes Tuesday.

The Mystics rank just ahead of the Lynx (71.5) and are only behind the Liberty at 71.3 points allowed per game.

The teams meet again Wednesday night at Target Center.

Preview: Sky (15-10) at Sparks (7-16)

              Date: August 16, 2015 5:00 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Sparks' resurgence started in Chicago late last month, but they'll welcome the Sky for a rematch hoping their recent play hasn't brought back a few bad habits.

Two-time MVP Candace Parker and the Sparks try to get back on track when they meet MVP favorite Elena Delle Donne and the Sky on Sunday.

Parker scored 31 points on July 31 in Chicago, her second game back after missing the first 16 for self-imposed rest. Parker's first 30-point performance in more than a year helped the Sparks win 88-77 and start a four-game winning streak, moving them from the Western Conference basement into the fourth playoff spot.

Los Angeles (7-16) has cooled off with back-to-back losses, falling 72-64 in Minnesota last Sunday and 85-77 at home to Seattle on Tuesday, though it still remains in the West's fourth spot.

The loss to the Lynx also snapped a streak of four games of 80-plus points for the Sparks. Parker continued to fill the stat sheet, but she's averaged just 10.7 points in Los Angeles' last three games compared to 19.5 in her first four.

More troubling is a quadriceps injury that kept four-time All-Star Alana Beard out against the Storm. Beard played in Los Angeles' first two games but missed 14 straight with plantar fasciitis before returning with Parker on July 29.

Beard averaged 11.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists in her first five games back before her most recent injury forced her out of the loss in Minnesota after seven-plus minutes on the court.

The Sky (15-10) have had their own injury concern this week.

Chicago, which has a half-game lead for the East's No. 2 spot, held its breath when Delle Donne rolled her ankle in the first half of a 74-64 win over Phoenix last Sunday. The Sky exhaled, though, as their star returned to score 23 of her game-high 33 points in the second half.

Swelling forced the WNBA's scoring leader into a walking boot for Tuesday's 84-63 loss at East-leading New York, but Delle Donne returned with 21 points in 36 minutes of Friday's 94-84 win in Seattle.

Guard Courtney Vandersloot matched Delle Donne's scoring output and also had eight assists, her sixth game in the last seven with seven or more.

Vandersloot tied her own team record with 13 assists in Chicago's loss to Los Angeles, and she leads the league with 5.9 per game.

The road team has won the last three in this series, with the Sky winning 90-83 at Staples Center last season despite not having Delle Donne or Vandersloot.

                Stars-Storm Preview

Despite owning the WNBA's two worst records, the playoffs remain a realistic possibility for both the San Antonio Stars and Seattle Storm.

The last-place Storm hope to take advantage of the rest of a lengthy homestand starting Sunday with the first of two in that stretch against a San Antonio team that has yet to win on the road.

Though it resides at the bottom of the Western Conference, Seattle (6-19) still sits only two games back of fourth-place Los Angeles. San Antonio (7-17) is a half-game behind the Sparks and will face them twice in the next two weeks.

The Stars can aid their cause with another win over a struggling Seattle squad they've bested twice this season, though both wins came in San Antonio. The Stars are 0-12 on the road and have dropped 15 of 16 as the visitor dating back to last season.

San Antonio has split its last four with the Storm in Seattle and dealt them an 88-81 loss on Aug. 8 -- the Stars' lone victory in their past six outings. Jia Perkins led the way with a season-high 32 points and Kayla McBride had 20 while hitting 6 of 9 attempts from 3-point range.

"We match up very well with them," forward Dearica Hamby told the Stars' official website. "We as a team expect to do the things that have been successful in the past against Seattle."

McBride has particularly fared well against the Storm, amassing 43 points in the two prior meetings. The second-year guard is averaging 20.7 points and shot a scorching 65 percent (13 of 20) from beyond the arc over her last three overall games.

Perkins is averaging 21.8 points in the past five, though she ended 4 of 17 from the field in a 15-point effort during Tuesday's 83-76 loss at West-leading Minnesota.

Seattle will play the second of six straight at home, a stretch that began with Friday's 94-84 loss to Chicago that dropped the Storm to 1-7 over their last eight.

Reserve center Markeisha Gatling was one bright spot in Seattle's latest defeat, with the early-season waiver pickup totaling a career-high 16 points in 12 minutes.

"(The offense) is kind of complicated at times so it took me a little time to get into it, but I knew once I got it, it would be a good fit," Gatling told the Storm's official website.

Crystal Langhorne had 13 points in the loss and has been a handful for the Stars to deal with this season. The veteran forward is 20 of 22 from the field while compiling 47 points in the two previous meetings, highlighted by a season-high 29 in the most recent one.

The teams play again in Seattle on Aug. 28.

                            Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz is 20-30 in games decided by 4 or less points.

-- Bret Bielema lost his last 11 games decided by 7 or less points; seven at Arkansas, four when he was at Wisconsin.

-- Combining NFL/UCLA days, Jim Mora Jr is 15-9 in games decided by 4 or less.

-- Tough day for Felix Hernandez; 2.1 IP, 12 hits 10 earned runs. Not good. When you face 20 batters and half of them score, thats a tough day.

-- Good day for Jackie Bradley, who batted 9th; three doubles, two homers, five runs scored, seven RBI. Best day ever by a 9th-place hitter?

-- School started Friday in Fort Collins, CO; why start school on a Friday?

                            **********

                            Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Things I think, things I don't think......

                            13) I don't think Eldrick Woods enjoys playing competitive golf anymore.

                            12) I think the NFL season should be: two preseason games, 18 in regular season, with the Super Bowl Sunday night of Presidents Day weekend. Then the Daytona 500 could be Saturday night and it is the best sports weekend of the year.

                            11) I think 95% of sports bars don't have a clue; place near my house Saturday afternoon had no golf, no NFL Network on. they have boxing, Little League and a freakin' talk show on. Stupid. Graney's on New Scotland Ave is still the best sports bar in this area and thats not counting the very attractive bartenders they have.

                            10) I don't think Little League games should be on national TV. Ever.

                            9) I think at some point, John Elway is going to realize that John Fox is a better coach than Gary Kubiak. Fox got to a Super Bowl with Jake freakin' Delhomme at QB. Now I know Elway and Kubiak are buddies from their playing days, but still......

                            8) I don't think anyone named Clinton or Bush should run for President next year. It is clear people are dissatisfied with our government; thats how a crackpot like Donald Trump leads a lot of polls. Anyone different is better than the status quo.

                            7) I think the designated hitter has its place: spring training and All-Star Games.

                            6) I still can't believe Kansas hired Charlie Weis as its football coach and is still paying him; not only that, Notre Dame is also still paying this fraud of a coach.

                            5) I think HBO's Hard Knocks would be the best show on TV if it carried thru an entire regular season; the stuff we don't see when the emotions run highest, during the regular season. Coaches' meetings might be the best part of it all.

                            4) I don't think Seattle's Lloyd McClendon should be a major league manager.

                            3) Now that I'm retired, I am amazed how terrible weekday daytime television is; awful talk shows, idiots getting paid huge money to provoke controversy. If not for all the CSI/NCIS/Law and Order reruns, it would be even worse. Game shows need to make a comeback-- daytime TV was better when I was a kid. Game shows are fun.

Side note: as I am typing this, White Sox are losing to the Cubs again: they just gave away a run on a throwing error. Hawk Harrelson's analysis: "You've got to be bleepin' me". Good stuff. He actually said "bleepin'"

                            2) I don't think we're as creative a culture as we used to be; reality TV is 95% crap, and that might be a low figure. The most entertaining stuff on TV is CNN and the real life shenanigans that happen in Washington DC. Now THAT is quality reality TV.

                            1) I think of the 32 current NFL head coaches, only ones who are getting in the Hall of Fame are Tom Coughlin and Bill Belichick.
