Preview: Padres (55-61) at Rockies (47-67)
    Game: 2
    Venue: Coors Field
    Date: August 15, 2015 8:10 PM EDT

Jon Gray is eager to get his feet wet in the majors, but he also understands the Colorado Rockies are banking on him for the future.

Continuing to gain trust from his coaching staff, the talented prospect tries to help the Rockies avoid a sixth consecutive defeat Saturday night against the visiting San Diego Padres.

The No. 3 overall pick in 2013, the hard-throwing Gray (0-0, 2.70 ERA) has allowed three earned runs over 10 innings in two starts since being promoted. Colorado, however, hasn't allowed the 6-foot-4, 235-pound right-hander to reach 80 pitches in either outing.

Though the club won't necessarily saddle Gray with a specific pitch limit, it will be smart after he logged 238 2-3 innings between Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Albuquerque since the start of last season.

"We're just going to be intelligent," Rockies general manager Jeff Bridich told MLB's official website. "The process started prior to him getting to the big league level. We're just going to continue to manage his workload."

Gray worked a fastball that reached 98 mph and a slider in the high 80s on Monday, allowing only a solo homer in six innings of a 4-2 loss to the New York Mets.

'I understand the point of it,' Gray said of the team's cautious approach. 'You want to go back out, especially in a game like that, close game. So part of me wanted to, but I saw the bigger picture.'

He'll try to help Colorado avoid a seventh straight loss to San Diego (55-61) and Matt Kemp, who became the first Padre to hit for the cycle Friday when he recorded four RBIs during the 9-5 victory. Kemp completed the feat with a ninth-inning triple as the Padres won for the third time in four games.

"I was like, `Wow.' It's hard to believe, all the great hitters that have been here," Kemp said of recording the personal and team milestone. "Tony Gwynn and all those guys haven't been able to hit for the cycle. I'm just glad to be able to do it.'

Kemp, who has two homers and seven RBIs in two games, is batting .328 with seven home runs and 25 RBIs in his last 31 contests. He's hit .385 with two homers and 13 RBIs in 10 games against the Rockies (47-67) this season.

'He showed (Friday) why he is the player he is,' manager Pat Murphy said. 'That was special, special to be part of.'

Teammate Andrew Cashner (4-12, 4.09), trying to avoid becoming the NL's third 13-game loser, is 0-2 with a 5.09 ERA in his last three starts and has received one run of support in each outing.

Facing the Rockies for the first time this season, the right-hander is 1-3 with a 4.50 ERA in five starts against them but has allowed three runs over seven innings in each of his two at Coors.

DJ LeMahieu is 5 for 10 against Cashner and batting .421 with three doubles in the last six games.

Colorado, however, has scored 10 runs and batted .185 during its five-game slide. Carlos Gonzalez is 2 for 19 during that skid, and 2 for his last 12 against Cashner.

Preview: Reds (51-63) at Dodgers (65-51)
      Game: 3
      Venue: Dodger Stadium
      Date: August 15, 2015 9:10 PM EDT

A stint on the disabled list hasn't slowed down Justin Turner, while another move to the DL has allowed Kike Hernandez to provide the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers with added offense.

Turner and Hernandez look to continue hitting the Cincinnati Reds' young pitchers on Saturday night.

Turner was hitting .459 with two homers and five doubles in a 10-game span before missing 14 with a skin infection in his right thigh. He's shown no adverse effects in two games since his return, going 3 for 6 and knocking in two runs in Friday's 5-3 victory over the Reds.

He's a .455 hitter in his last seven meetings with Cincinnati.

Hernandez matched his career high with three hits in Thursday's 10-3 loss in the opener of this four-game series. He followed that up Friday with another three hits and scoring with Turner on Adrian Gonzalez's three-run homer in the fifth.

Hernandez has been used at five positions this year but has started the last two games at second base with Howie Kendrick on the DL with a strained left hamstring.

The Dodgers (65-51) have won seven of nine at home and are 8-3 in the past 11 matchups there with the Reds (51-63).

Brett Anderson (6-7, 3.43 ERA) is facing them for the first time as he tries to bounce back from Monday's 8-3 loss to Washington. He gave up two runs in the first five innings before yielding five and getting pulled with no outs in the sixth.

"I wasn't able to get anybody out," said Anderson, who was 4-2 with a 2.45 ERA over his previous eight starts. "I pride myself on giving us a chance to win, and I felt like I did that through five. But the stuff was bad. I fell behind and I made a bunch of mistakes."

While much of the damage came against the Nationals, the left-hander is 0-3 with a 5.63 ERA in his last four home starts. He's received virtually no support from his teammates in those games, with the Dodgers scoring two total runs with him on the mound.

After John Lamb made his major league debut Friday, fellow rookie David Holmberg (1-1, 3.06) takes the mound for his first meeting with the Dodgers.

This will be the 17th straight game Cincinnati has started a rookie, the longest such streak since the first year of the rookie designation in 1958.

Holmberg has been effective in each of his three starts since being recalled from Triple-A Louisville. The left-hander lasted a career-best 6 2-3 innings in Monday's 2-1 loss at San Diego, making his only mistake on Justin Upton's two-run homer.

Holmberg has been a pleasant surprise after posting a 4.40 ERA in 19 games - 17 starts - at Louisville.

"I think it's just executing pitches better, just staying focused through the game and just making pitches when I need to and getting quick outs on ground balls and popups and stuff like that," Holmberg told MLB's official website.

Joey Votto is 6 for 12 with two homers and six RBIs in the last three games. He had a two-run homer and an RBI double Friday, giving him a .433 average over his past nine meetings with the Dodgers.

Preview: Rays (58-57) at Rangers (57-57)
        Game: 2
Venue: Globe Life Park in Arlington
        Date: August 15, 2015 8:05 PM EDT

Josh Hamilton is proving he's still a valuable offensive weapon.

Now he'll get to see where he's at against one of the AL's top pitchers.

Hamilton and the Texas Rangers dig in Saturday night against Chris Archer and the visiting Tampa Bay Rays.

The former AL MVP is still being bothered by soreness in his left knee, but an MRI earlier Friday cleared him to rejoin Texas' lineup for the series opener after missing two games.

"Definitely positive, and helped me understand that I can go there and run around and play," Hamilton said.

Hamilton's .732 OPS is the lowest of his nine-year career, but he launched his sixth homer and hit the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the eighth inning of Friday's 5-3 victory against Tampa Bay. He's batting .288 with 13 RBIs in his last 13 contests.

Texas (57-57) won its season-best fifth straight at home and pulled with one half-game of the Rays, who are two games behind the Los Angeles Angels for the AL's second wild-card spot.

Archer (10-8, 2.62 ERA), who owns the AL's fifth-best ERA, is 1-4 in his last eight starts but he owns a 2.18 ERA in the last five while striking out 43 in 33 innings. He fanned 10 while allowing three runs over six innings in a 4-3 victory against the New York Mets on Sunday.

His seven double-digit strikeout performances in 2015 are one shy of his 59-start total before this year.

The right-hander was 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA in his first three starts against Texas before giving up five runs in a season-low 3 1-3 innings of a 5-4 loss to the Rangers on May 7.

Adrian Beltre is 1 for 11 with five strikeouts against Archer, while Hamilton is 3 for 10 with a homer.

Outside of a 10-run backing in an 11-3 win against the Chicago White Sox on Aug. 4, Tampa Bay's offense hasn't done Archer many favors lately - he received four total runs of support in his other four most recent outings.

The Rays (58-57) had their winning streak snapped at four, but were encouraged by Desmond Jennings' 3-for-4 night. Jennings, who led Tampa Bay with 167 runs from 2012-13, returned after missing 96 games due to knee bursitis.

"Very promising. He looked really good," manager Kevin Cash told MLB's official website. "His at-bats were good. Squared the ball up ... It's nice to see. He's going to help us a lot here over the next two months."

Texas' Colby Lewis (12-5, 4.61) has recorded a quality start in five of his last six games, though home runs continue to be his downfall. He has allowed nine homers in his last six outings spanning 42 innings. The right-hander gave up two while allowing three earned runs in his first complete game of the year in Sunday's 4-2 loss at Seattle, falling to 5-3 for his career when going the distance.

Lewis has given up two home runs in five career starts against Tampa Bay, going 3-1 with a 3.54 ERA.

Evan Longoria and Asdrubal Cabrera are a combined 3 for 18 against Lewis.

Cabrera is hitting .538 with nine runs in his last 10 games after going 3 for 4 Friday. He's batting .476 in his past five contests against Texas.

Preview: Nationals (58-57) at Giants (62-53)
          Game: 3
          Venue: AT&T Park
          Date: August 15, 2015 10:05 PM EDT

A breakout performance against one of baseball's elite pitchers figures to be a boost for the previously slumping Giants.

San Francisco will look to ride the momentum to another win Saturday night against the visiting Washington Nationals and another quality pitcher in Gio Gonzalez.

The Giants (62-53) had been listless offensively, batting .216 and averaging 2.7 runs during a 2-5 stretch. Even Thursday's 3-1 series-opening victory wasn't overly impressive with more strikeouts (nine) than hits (eight). San Francisco had also been bottled up in recent meetings with Washington, scoring three runs or fewer 10 times while dropping 11 of 15.

However, the club touched up Max Scherzer for a season-high six runs and seven hits - including two homers - over three innings in an 8-5 victory Friday, the Washington ace's shortest outing since 2012. Matt Duffy finished a triple shy of the cycle, and Hunter Pence also went deep against Scherzer.

Washington's four-game losing streak is its second in two weeks, and the Nationals (58-57) are in danger of falling to .500 for the first time since they were 15-15 after May 8. Their worst slide of the season was a six-game skid April 22-27.

They're hitting .221 with 189 strikeouts while dropping 14 of 20 on the road. Ryan Zimmerman was 0 for 4 and struck out three times Friday, falling to 1 for 15 with 10 strikeouts in his last four contests.

'We're trying to have good at-bats and I think we did that,' said Bryce Harper, who Harper homered and drove in four runs. 'Hopefully we can take that into tomorrow, the next couple of days and keep having fun.'

Despite the recent struggles, Washington has a good shot of bouncing back behind Gonzalez (9-4, 3.50 ERA), who is 5-0 with a 1.48 ERA in his last eight games with a 6.10 run-support average. Opponents are batting .167 with runners in scoring position in that span compared to .289 previously.

Gonzalez tossed a season-best eight shutout innings in Monday's 8-3 win against the Los Angeles Dodgers, and though he threw a season-high 117 pitches, manager Matt Williams lauded his improved efficiency. Gonzalez had averaged 18.3 pitches per inning in his previous five outings compared to 14.6 Monday.

"The eight innings mean a lot. I told skip (Williams), 'Thank you for giving me a chance to finally go past the sixth and seventh inning," he told MLB's official website. "To be in the eighth inning, it's nice. Take it with a grain of salt. I will also move on and get ready for the next start."

Gonzalez hasn't lost to San Francisco since 2010, going 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA in five meetings since. He held them to a Buster Posey homer and four other hits over seven innings in a 2-1 home victory July 3 while using only 82 pitches.

Pence was on the disabled list for that game and is 1 for 12 lifetime against the left-hander.

Gonzalez faces the same pitching counterpart with Jake Peavy (2-5, 3.75) on the mound for the Giants. Peavy gave up two runs on a Clint Robinson homer and lasted 6 1-3 innings in the loss, falling to 4-6 in 12 career regular-season games against Washington.

Zimmerman, Jayson Werth and Yunel Escobar are a combined 8 for 49 against the right-hander with Zimmerman striking out nine times in 16 at-bats.

Peavy's five innings in Sunday's 2-0 loss to the Chicago Cubs marked the first time in seven starts he failed to complete at least six innings.

Cubs try for 9th straight, Utley available

              August 14, 2015

A look at what's happening all around the major leagues Saturday:

              CUB HUB

The Cubs try for their ninth straight win when Jake Arrieta starts against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. Arrieta is looking to extend his career-best streak of 17 2-3 scoreless innings. The North Siders from Chicago last won nine in a row in 2008.

              JOIN THE CHASE

Chase Utley is still with Philadelphia, but for how long? The Giants say they've made a trade offer for the 36-year-old second baseman, who cleared waivers this week. Utley has spent his entire career with the Phillies.

              GRAY MATTER

Athletics ace Sonny Gray will throw a bullpen session in Baltimore as he recovers from a nagging back problem. He leads the AL with a 2.06 ERA, but missed his last scheduled start because of spasms. Oakland is hoping he can pitch Monday vs. the Orioles.

              MENDING MATZ

Mets rookie Steven Matz makes his first rehab start at Class A St. Lucie in the Florida State League. Promoted in midseason, the 24-year-old lefty won his first two starts in the majors and also drove in five runs. He's been out since early July because of a partially torn lat muscle.

                Baseball Capsules

                August 15, 2015

TORONTO (AP) Carlos Beltran hit a huge home run in the eighth inning, Andrew Miller escaped a big jam in the ninth and the New York Yankees stopped Toronto's 11-game winning streak, beating the Blue Jays 4-3 on Friday night.

Miller struck out Ben Revere and Troy Tulowitzki with runners on second and third to close out the victory. The win moved the Yankees a half-game ahead of Toronto and back into first place in the AL East.

David Price took a 3-0 lead into the eighth before New York rallied. He left after Chase Headley's RBI double and Beltran then greeted reliever Aaron Sanchez (6-5) with a pinch-hit, three-run homer.

Ivan Nova (5-4) wound up with the win. Dellin Betances pitched the eighth and Miller finished for his 26th save, fanning Tulowitzki to end a 12-pitch sequence.

                PADRES 9, ROCKIES 5

DENVER (AP) - Matt Kemp hit a triple in the ninth for the first cycle in San Diego Padres history and they went on to beat Colorado.

Kemp also had a two-run homer in the first, single in the third and an RBI double in the seventh. His triple in the ninth went off the fence in center and he easily scampered into third.

The Padres retrieved the historic baseball. One streak down, one to go. They're the only team in the majors without a no-hitter.

Kemp ignited a four-run rally in the seventh with a two-out, RBI double and Jedd Gyorko later followed with a three-run homer.

Recently signed Bud Norris (1-0) pitched the sixth to pick up the win.

Reliever Ken Roberts (0-1), called up from Triple-A Albuquerque earlier in the day, took the loss.

                DODGERS 5, REDS 3

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Adrian Gonzalez hit a three-run homer to highlight a four-run fifth inning and Los Angeles beat Cincinnati.

John Lamb (1-0) gave up four consecutive two-out hits, capped by Gonzalez's 23rd homer of the season into the lower right-field seats that put the Dodgers ahead 5-1.

Alex Wood (8-7) earned his first victory in three tries with the Dodgers, allowing three runs and five hits in 6 1/3 innings. The left-hander struck out three and walked three in his home debut since being acquired from Atlanta.

Kenley Jansen retired the side in the ninth for his 23rd save in 24 chances. He earned his 129th career save, tying Jeff Shaw for second all-time in franchise history.

Joey Votto drove in all three of Cincinnati's runs, including a two-run homer that left the Reds trailing 5-3 in the sixth.

                PIRATES 3, METS 2, 10 INNINGS

NEW YORK (AP) - Gregory Polanco singled home the go-ahead run in the 10th inning and Pittsburgh ended New York's seven-game home winning streak.

The teams went into extra innings at 1-all. Polanco singled off Bobby Parnell (1-2) and Aramis Ramirez hit a sacrifice fly against Carlos Torres.

The NL East-leading Mets scored in the bottom half on Curtis Granderson's sacrifice fly before Mark Melancon finished for his 36th save.

Arquimedes Caminero (3-1) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win.

                CARDINALS 3, MARLINS 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Jaime Garcia pitched shutout ball into the ninth inning and Matt Carpenter homered, leading St. Louis over Miami.

Garcia (5-4) came within two outs of throwing the first complete game of the season for the NL Central leaders. He gave up six singles, walked one and struck out six.

Trevor Rosenthal got his 36th save in 38 chances.

Carpenter's bunt single broke a scoreless tie in the fifth. He hit a solo home run in the eighth.

Tom Koehler (8-10) took the loss and Miami's three-game winning streak ended.

Ichiro Suzuki singled in the Miami fifth for his 2,913th hit in the major leagues. Combined with 1,278 hits in Japan, he equaled Ty Cobb's total of 4,191. Cobb held the big league mark that Pete Rose eventually passed on his way to a record 4,256 hits.

                CUBS 6, WHITE SOX 5

CHICAGO (AP) - Chris Coghlan hit two home runs, Anthony Rizzo also went deep, and Chicago made it eight straight wins and 14 in 15 games.

The Cubs, coming off a 7-0 homestand, extended their longest win streak since a nine-game run during the 2008 NL Central championship season.

Coghlan hit a three-run homer in the top of the third, and then he and Rizzo added back-to-back solo drives off the struggling Jeff Samardzija (8-8) in the fifth to give the North Siders a 6-5 lead.

Four relievers combined to shut down the White Sox the rest of the way, with Clayton Richard (3-0) working two innings.

Hector Rondon pitched the ninth for his 20th save in 24 chances.

                ROYALS 4, ANGELS 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Eric Hosmer hit a go-ahead two-run homer, Danny Duffy settled down after a wild start and Kansas City rallied for a victory over Los Angeles.

Duffy (6-5) allowed five hits without a walk while matching a franchise record with three hit batters in just six innings. But the left-hander only allowed one run, wiggling out of a few jams by leaving six Angels on base - three in scoring position.

The Royals mustered just one hit off Jered Weaver (4-9) until the sixth, when Ben Zobrist led off with a double to right. He tied the game moments later when first baseman Albert Pujols let a sharply hit grounder by Lorenzo Cain through his legs for an error.

Hosmer followed with his 406-foot shot over the bullpen in right field.

Greg Holland got the last three outs for his 26th save.

                GIANTS 8, NATIONALS 5

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Matt Duffy homered among his three hits and drove in three runs, Hunter Pence also had a homer and San Francisco beat Washington.

Gregor Blanco added three hits and drove in two runs for the Giants, who have won three of four since being swept in a four-game series by the Cubs in Chicago.

Bryce Harper homered and drove in four runs and Danny Espinosa also went deep for the Nationals, who lost their fourth straight and fifth in the last six.

Max Scherzer (11-9) gave up a season-high six runs on seven hits over three innings.

Giants starter Matt Cain failed to finish the fifth inning for a second straight start, allowing five runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Jeremy Affeldt (2-2) took over for Cain in the fifth and pitched an inning to get the win.

                ASTROS 5, TIGERS 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Dallas Keuchel struck out eight in seven solid innings and Jed Lowrie powered the offense with a two-RBI double to lead Houston to a win over Detroit.

The Astros trailed entering the fifth inning before scoring three runs, capped by the double by Lowrie to take a 3-1 lead.

It was the opener of a 10-game homestand for Houston, which remains in first place in the American League-West despite going 2-7 on a recent road trip.

Keuchel (14-6) yielded six hits and one run to improve to 11-0 at home this season. His 14 wins overall are tied for most in the AL.

Alfredo Simon (10-7) allowed six hits and four runs in five-plus innings for the loss.

Detroit slugger Miguel Cabrera returned from a six-week stint on the disabled list.

                RANGERS 5, RAYS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Josh Hamilton homered and delivered the tiebreaking sacrifice fly for Texas in a victory that snapped Tampa Bay's four-game winning streak.

Hamilton's sixth homer of the season was a 437-foot blast to right-center field in the second inning for a 2-1 lead. His sac fly to deep center in the eighth broke a 3-3 tie.

Delino DeShields hit his first career homer for Texas.

Adrian Beltre's one-out single in the eight started the go-ahead rally off Jake McGee (1-2). Beltre went to third on a single by Mitch Moreland, who moved to second on the throw. Hamilton followed that before Elvis Andrus had an RBI single.

Sam Dyson (1-1) worked two scoreless innings in relief of starter Martin Perez. Shawn Tolleson worked the ninth for his 22nd save in 23 chances.

                ORIOLES 8, ATHLETICS 6, 13 INNINGS

BALTIMORE (AP) - Manny Machado hit a two-run homer in the 13th inning, and Baltimore also got home runs from Adam Jones and Chris Davis in a victory over Oakland.

Caleb Joseph doubled with one out in the 13th against Drew Pomeranz (4-5), who left after being visited on the mound by the team trainer. Aaron Brooks entered, and Machado sent the right-hander's second pitch into the seats in left field.

That enabled the Orioles to avoid a third straight defeat, which would have dropped them to .500 for the first time since July 27. The defending AL East champions are in third place in the division and 1 1/2 games off the pace in the wild-card hunt.

Rookie Jason Garcia (1-0) got three straight outs in the 13th to earn his first major league win.

                BRAVES 3, DIAMONDBACKS 2

ATLANTA (AP) - Julio Teheran pitched six strong innings, Cameron Maybin drove in two runs and Atlanta beat Arizona.

Atlanta got a solid outing from Teheran after their starters had gone 2-8 with a 6.02 ERA in the last 15 games.

The victory improved the Braves to 31-23 at home. They've won 12 of 19 at Turner Field. But they are last in the majors with 40 road losses.

Teheran (8-6) allowed three hits, one run and two walks with seven strikeouts.

Diamondbacks starter Robbie Ray (3-8) allowed six hits, three runs and four walks in 4 1/3 innings.

Arodys Vizcaino earned his third save in three chances with a perfect ninth.

                INDIANS 6, TWINS 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Corey Kluber flirted with a no-hitter for the second consecutive outing against Minnesota before finishing with a one-hitter in his second straight complete game as Cleveland cruised to a win.

Kluber (8-12) gave up just a solo home run to Joe Mauer and struck out seven in his fourth complete game of the season.

Giovanny Urshela had two hits, including a two-run homer for Cleveland. Francisco Lindor, Lonnie Chisenhall and Mike Aviles each had three hits to help the Indians win for the fift time in six games.

Trevor May (8-8) gave up two runs on five hits in three innings in his first start for Minnesota since moving to the bullpen in early June.

Kluber took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in his last start, also against Minnesota, before Mauer singled with two outs. This time, the only blemish on Kluber's line before Mauer's home run with two outs in the fourth was a walk to rookie Miguel Sano in the second inning.

                BREWERS 3, PHILLIES 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Wily Peralta pitched seven scoreless innings and Jean Segura dashed home on a rare two-base sacrifice fly to lift Milwaukee to a victory over Philadelphia.

Segura's scramble came after center fielder Odubel Herrera and right fielder Domonic Brown collided in the third inning. According to STATS, it was the first time a player had scored from second this season on a sacrifice fly.

Peralta (3-7) had his best start this year, and Francisco Rodriguez picked up his 27th save in 27 tries this season despite Chase Utley's RBI single.

Utley had four hits for the Phillies, who squandered a solid start by Adam Morgan (3-4) by stranding 10 runners.

Khris Davis added a solo home run for the Brewers in the second.

                RED SOX 15, MARINERS 1

BOSTON (AP) - Travis Shaw hit two home runs and Rusney Castillo hit one to carry Boston to a 15-1 win over Seattle, just hours after Red Sox manager John Farrell announced he's taking a medical leave to treat lymphoma.

Fighting back tears, the 53-year-old Farrell said that he had a ''highly curable'' form of cancer and has taken leave for the rest of the season.

Shaw had a two-run and solo shot, and Castillo's was a two-run homer in Boston's highest run total of the season. The Red Sox finished with a season-high 21 hits and scored in six of the eight innings they batted.

Joe Kelly (5-6) limited the Mariners to one run and four in six innings. He struck out six and walked two.

Mike Montgomery (4-5) gave up nine runs on 10 hits in just 2 1/3 innings.

Losses piling up for Tomlin, Indians

The Cleveland Indians haven't garnered a victory in the last six times Josh Tomlin has taken the bump.

The right-hander is slated to get the ball Saturday versus Tyler Duffey and the Minnesota Twins at Target Field.

Pinnacle Sports has set the Indians as +102 on the moneyline.

W's hard to come by with Phils' Williams on the road

The Philadelphia Phillies have won just two out of Jerome Williams' last 10 road starts.

Williams is scheduled to get the ball in Milwaukee Saturday opposite of Jimmy Nelson.

The Brewers are currently in the -180 ballpark at sportsbooks.

                            Pirates cruising versus Mets recently

The Pittsburgh Pirates have won five consecutive games over the New York Mets and will have an opportunity to make that six in a row at Citi Field Saturday.

Charlie Morton and Jon Niese are the probable starters for the Pirates and Mets, respectively.

As of this writing, sportsbooks had the Buccos listed as slight +106 underdogs.

Over hot when Orioles and A's clash

When the Oakland A's and Baltimore Orioles collide, high-scoring games tend to follow.

The Over has cashed in eight out of the last nine times the two squads have met. They'll renew acquaintances Saturday in Baltimore.

Pinnacle Sports opened the game with a total of 8.5, but that's since been lowered to eight as of 9 a.m. ET.

                              NFL preseason capsules

                              August 15, 2015

ATLANTA (AP) Tennessee rookie quarterback Marcus Mariota, whose first two drives ended with an interception and a fumble, recovered to lead a touchdown drive in the Titans' 31-24 loss to the Atlanta Falcons in a preseason opener Friday night.

Atlanta's Matt Ryan completed all six passes for 86 yards on his only possession, including a 13-yard touchdown to Julio Jones.

With the assistance of Mariota's early turnovers, the Falcons led 17-0 behind new coach Dan Quinn before the Titans pulled even at 24. Michael Ford's 1-yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter snapped the tie.

Mariota, the No. 2 overall draft pick, went 7 of 8 for 94 yards. Paul Worrilow returned Mariota's fumble 14 yards for a touchdown.

                              PANTHERS 25, BILLS 24

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) - Joe Webb's short pass to running back Brandon Wegher led to a 42-yard touchdown with 54 seconds left and Carolina won it on a 2-point conversion.

The Panthers' third-string quarterback hit Paul Browning for the 2-pointer to seal the victory, as coach Ron Rivera went for the win rather than have an exhibition game decided in overtime.

The loss spoiled new Bills coach Rex Ryan's first game at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Fired by the New York Jets at the end of last season, he was hired by Buffalo to replace Doug Marrone, who stepped down abruptly on Dec. 31.

The Bills were in a position to win after EJ Manuel put them ahead 24-17 by hitting receiver Deonte Thompson in stride for a 51-yard touchdown late in the third quarter.

                              BENGALS 23, GIANTS 10

CINCINNATI (AP) - Andy Dalton completed all three of his passes, and the Bengals' starting offense was impressive in its only drive. Dalton was 3 for 3 for 31 yards, including a 3-yard touchdown pass to Mohamed Sanu. Coach Marvin Lewis decided that was enough, resting his starting offense after only 2 minutes, 55 seconds on the field.

Dalton had completions of 12, 16 and 3 yards, and Jeremy Hill ran twice for 15 yards.

It was much different for the Giants' starters. Eli Manning and the rest of the offense stayed on the field until early in the second quarter, managing only one first down and 38 yards in four series.

The teams practiced against each other for two days last week without incident.

                              JAGUARS 23, STEELERS 21

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Ben Roethlisberger threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Martavis Bryant on the opening drive, and Pittsburgh was much more proficient in its second preseason game.

The Jaguars (1-0) were the real losers, though. Tight end Julius Thomas injured a finger on his left hand on the team's second play and did not return.

The Steelers (0-2) managed just three points and 191 yards in a 14-3 loss to Minnesota in the Hall of Fame game last Sunday. Roethlisberger, running back Le'Veon Bell, receiver Antonio Brown and several other starters sat out. The trio came up big in just six plays of work against the Jaguars.

Roethlisberger completed all three passes for 59 yards, including a perfectly lobbed deep ball to Bryant on third down. Bell carried twice for 18 yards. And Brown caught the only ball throw in his direction.

                              RAIDERS 18, RAMS 3

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Derek Carr completed three passes to Oakland rookie receiver Amari Cooper on an opening field-goal drive and the Raiders won their exhibition opener under new coach Jack Del Rio.

Carr kept looking for Cooper and threw an interception to Trumaine Johnson in the end zone on the second drive before leaving for the night.

Nick Foles drove the Rams to a field goal on his first drive, but that's all St. Louis could generate.

Backup Christian Ponder threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Andre Holmes and third-stringer Matt McGloin connected on a 16-yard TD to Brice Butler as Del Rio became the first Raiders coach to win his exhibition debut since Lane Kiffin in 2007.

                              BRONCOS 22, SEAHAWKS 20

SEATTLE (AP) - Brock Osweiler completed 15 of 20 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown, leading Denver to scores on all five first-half possessions.

Starting in place of Peyton Manning - who went through pregame warmups but was just a spectator - Osweiler finished with a 112.7 rating. He capped his night with a 17-yard touchdown pass to tight end Virgil Green late in the first half for a 19-10 Broncos lead. Denver's offense finished with 240 yards in the first half, although much of that came with most of Seattle's starting defense standing on the sideline.

Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson was in for two series and completed his lone pass attempt, a 12-yard connection with new tight end Jimmy Graham. Seattle's biggest highlight was rookie Tyler Lockett's 103-yard kickoff return for a TD.

                                Friday's Sports In Brief

                                August 15, 2015

                                PGA

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) The second round of the PGA Championship offered a little bit of everything Friday.

                                Except a conclusion.

On one side of the golf course, Jordan Spieth was piling up enough birdies to momentarily tie for the lead at Whistling Straits. On the other side with far less attention, Hiroshi Iwata ran off five birdies and an eagle and tied the major championship record with a 63.

Dustin Johnson was losing ground in the rough and in the bunkers, falling out of the lead with three bogeys in a four-hole stretch. John Daly lost his cool and then lost a 6-iron when he heaved it in Lake Michigan.

And that was before a wicked storm that packed gusts up to 48 mph and suspended the second round.

Jason Day ran off three straight birdies and was tied for the lead with Matt Jones at 9-under par when players were taken off the course. The storm was severe enough to topple the main scoreboard at the entrance and rip flags off the poles atop some of the grandstands.

The round was to resume at 7 a.m.

                                PRO FOOTBALL

MONTREAL (AP) - Michael Sam is stepping away from pro football.

Sam, the first openly gay player drafted by the NFL, has told the CFL's Montreal Alouettes that he is leaving the team. He tweeted Friday that ''The last 12 months have been very difficult for me, to the point where I became concerned with my mental health. Because of this I am going to step away from the game at this time.''

He did not play in Montreal's game against Edmonton on Thursday night, citing a sore back. He made his CFL debut the previous week.

Sam was selected in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL draft by the Rams, did not make the team, and spent some time on the Cowboys' practice squad before being released.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina uncovered possible additional NCAA violations in women's basketball and men's soccer while preparing the response to its long-running academic scandal, the school announced Friday.

Its response to the NCAA, due next week, has been delayed. The NCAA will set a date after a review of the new information, school officials said.

During a 20-minute conference call with reporters, athletic director Bubba Cunningham twice referred to the school's ongoing effort to ''earn back trust.''

''As painful as it is, it's part of the Carolina culture that we want to know what happened, we want to understand it, we want to fix it,'' he said.

Cunningham said the new information in women's basketball was discovered when officials prepared to release emails from former U.S. Justice Department official Kenneth Wainstein's eight-month investigation.

                                BASEBALL

BOSTON (AP) - Fighting back tears, Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell said Friday that he had a ''highly curable'' form of cancer and has taken a medical leave for the rest of the season to deal with lymphoma.

The 53-year-old Farrell said bench coach Torey Lovullo will run the team in his absence. Farrell said he planned on being back with the team for spring training.

Farrell said the cancer of the lymphatic system was discovered when he had hernia surgery in Detroit earlier this week.

''I know we usually start out with the injury report. I'll start out with myself on this one. Monday's surgery for the hernia revealed that I have lymphoma,'' he said before Friday night's game at Fenway Park against Seattle.

''Thankfully, it was detected in the hernia surgery. I can honestly tell you I'm extremely fortunate that it was found. Treatment will begin in the coming days,'' he said.

                                RIO OLYMPICS

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - The World Health Organization's top water expert said Friday the body ''never advised against viral testing'' for Rio de Janeiro's polluted waterways where about 1,400 athletes will compete in Olympic events next year.

Bruce Gordon, the WHO's coordinator of water, sanitation, hygiene and health, told The Associated Press in a phone interview from Geneva that testing for viruses ''would be advisable'' given it's known that human sewage pollution is rife in Rio's waters.

''WHO would support additional viral testing to further inform the risk assessment by authorities and to verify and address concerns raised by independent testing,'' Gordon said, indicating it was WHO's official stance. ''In this case, measuring coliphages and enteric viruses would be advisable.''

The comments come after Olympic Games Executive Director Christophe Dubi said earlier this week at a press conference in Rio that the International Olympic Committee ruled out viral testing because the WHO made it ''very clear that bacterial testing is what should be followed.''
