    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Some lines for interesting NFL games this season........

Week 3-- Broncos (even) @ Lions

    Week 4-- Packers (-4) @ 49ers

    Week 5-- Steelers @ Chargers (-2)

    Week 6-- Chargers @ Packers (-7)

Week 7-- Bills (-5) vs Jaguars in London

    Week 7-- Ravens @ Cardinals (-1.5)

    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

    13) Major leagues went to 30 teams in 1998; since then, Tuesday was first night ever with a 15-game schedule where the home team won all fifteen games.

    12) Can't be fun pitching for the Red Sox; fat guy playing third, and when they play in NL parks, another fat guy playing first. Marlins scored ten runs in sixth inning with a mind-numbing succession of ground balls that went thru the Boston infield like fans go thru a turnstile on their way into an arena.

Don't change pitchers, put better athletes in the field!!!!

This is why I don't think DHs should get in the Hall of Fame; they're incapable of playing the field. Have the feeling David Ortiz will get in someday, though.

    11) Marlins/Padres are only big league teams who have never had a player hit for the cycle. Padres have been around 1969 and had Dave Winfield/Tony Gwynn; you would think at some point, one of those guys would've gotten a cycle.

    10) Wisconsin basketball coach Bo Ryan is hedging on his retirement after this coming season; either he really doesn't want to retire, or he knows the guy he wants to replace him isn't going to get the job, so he'll retire at a time where they almost have to give the guy the job, like right before the season.

    9) Hisashi Iwakuma pitched fourth no-hitter this season, blanking Baltimore 3-0; it was the first AL no-hitter since Felix Hernandez' perfect game in 2012.

    8) Diamondbacks haven't been over .500 since they were 8-7 back in April; they lost to the Phillies Wednesday in their latest attempt to get over .500. Arizona is an improved team, but they're chasing the Dodgers/Giants and getting over .500 has been an issue for them.

    7) NBA schedule came out yesterday; mercifully, Knciks aren't playing on Christmas Day this year. Five games spread out all day; Cavs-Warriors might be best game.

    6) No team has more than 20 sets of back/back games: Pistons-Warriors-Rockets and the Clippers all have 20. They reduced the back/backs, like Commissioner Silver said they would do.

    5) I don't think Little League games should be on national TV. Kids are too young; some little tyke makes an error to cost his town a national title and he has to live there for at least the next 6-7 years; he might wind up like Dennis Hopper in Hoosiers, in a strait jacket in a psych ward listening to his son's hoop games on the radio.

    4) Bobby Hurley got out of Buffalo just in time; Justin Moss, Bulls' best returning player, is in trouble with the school (not the law) with regards to a burglary and might not play this season. Without Moss, the Bulls are screwed- he is very good..

    3) 2016 is a leap year, which means February will have 29 days, not 28. Was looking up which famous people were born February 29-- Anthony Robbins was the most famous person I could find-- he is 55, but has had only 14 actual birthdays.

    2) Big 14 football teams have been underdogs in 43 of their last 50 bowl games; they are 3-3-1 vs spread in the seven games they were favored to win. In both '12 and '14, all Big 14 teams were underdogs in their bowl games. An overrated league.

    1) I do not advise wagering on NFL exhibition games; coaches really don't care who wins, they're more interested in looking at certain players in game situations.

Betting 101: Best ways to safely handicap the NFL preseason

So you want to bet NFL preseason football, do you?

Steering bettors away from the NFL’s unpredictable exhibition schedule is like trying to convince high school kids to wait until marriage, if you know what we mean. You aren’t going to convince them otherwise so you might as well preach about safe sex - or in this case safe betting habits.

We break down the best ways to handicap the NFL preseason slate and hope you don’t lose your shirt – and pants – by the time Week 1 rolls around:

      Read everything

The great thing about the NFL preseason is that books and bettors are on the same level. Coaches don’t reveal their plans until usually the day before a game, and by that time odds have been up for a while. If you catch an online presser or read a quote from a coach spilling the beans on his starters’ playing time, you can quickly get down before the lines adjust.

Research is everything for preseason capping. Find out how many snaps the first teamers will get, what the focal point of the offseason is – offense or defense – and wager accordingly. Also, keep an eye on camp injuries or how veteran players are treating the tune-up games. Some star players go through the motions in August and ones limited by injuries won't risk going all out before the real games start.

A team that is trying to establish some momentum on the ground will likely run the ball a lot – therefore keeping the clock ticking and the final score Under the total. If a team is trying to fill roster spots in the secondary and is plugging in rookies and inexperienced player in its pass defense, than perhaps look at the other team to air it out and exploit those weaknesses.

      QB depth

Much the way starting pitchers make up 90 percent of baseball handicapping, quarterbacks hold a similar value when betting on the preseason. It’s the most important position on the field and can single handedly make or break your bets.

Finding a team with depth at quarterback is the key for success during the exhibition schedule. The No. 1 passer will likely only take a handful of snaps in the first two games of the preseason, turning the offense over to the backups.

Look for teams with an experienced backup under center. Many clubs have veterans and former starters on the roster, guys who won’t be freaked out by the NFL’s big stage like rookie QBs and wet-behind-the-ears free agents. These vets can keep the chains moving and often excel against an opponent’s second and third-tier defense.

      New coaches and schemes

The preseason is summer school for many NFL teams transitioning their playbook, whether that be with a new head coach, coordinator or just an overall flip in the way they do things.

New head coaches aren’t necessarily a red flag. They can often feel a little pressured to win in the preseason in order to impress the front office and fan base, which can give some teams added betting value. New coordinators, on the other hand, are working in different plays and schemes, which usually come with a learning curve.

Read up on how teams are adjusting to new systems and offenses, especially if there is a dramatic shift in gears, like speeding up with no-huddle attacks or going from a 4-3 defense to a 3-4. When these teams take on established coaches, who have implemented their systems for a while, there can be value going against those new faces on the sideline.

      Preseason lines

Come the regular season, the infamous 3-point spread is everywhere. And while a field-goal line is a key number in football betting, it loses some of its stature in the preseason.

Teams are more likely to go for a two-point conversion or try their luck on fourth-and-short in the preseason than play it safe. Not only do the games not matter, but a fourth down gamble or two-point attempt is an extra set for the offense as it works toward the regular season.

Depending on how those rolls of the dice play out, the final score can either be closer than three points or well over it. It’s rare to see a preseason spread of more than three points with most bouncing between 1-2.5 points.

      Week to week

For those looking to bet the closest facsimile of Week 1 action during the preseason, you may want to pass on the first two weeks of exhibitions and save your marbles for Week 3. That’s when starting players tend to log the most time, working the majority of the first half and sometimes into the third quarter.

Week 1 and 2 often has first teams playing limited snaps – depending on the team’s situation – and Week 4 is pretty much a craps shoot. Coaches are making their final cuts, players are fighting to stay on the roster, and the coordinators are tightening the final nuts and bolts of their playbooks.

For those bettors who like a challenge, Week 4 of the preseason could be the trickiest week of the entire NFL schedule – preseason, regular season and playoffs – to wager on.

Lester has been a boon for under plays

Jon Lester has led the Chicago Cubs to a 3-12-1 over/under record in his past 16 starts. Through those 16 starts, Lester has only given up an average of 5.6 runs per game and 2.1 runs.

On the season as a whole, the Cubs are 6-14 O/U in Lester's starts. That is the third most number of unders this season out of all of the starting pitchers.

Lester and the Cubs will host the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday.

Day games have been where Sonny Gray shines

Sonny Gray can roll out of bed and pitch a marvel it seems, with the right-hander playing phenomenally during day games this season. In eight day starts, Gray has a 5-1 record with a 0.97 ERA while opponents are only hitting .178.

Through those eight games, two of which were complete games, Gray has surrendered six earned runs over 55.2 innings.

Gray takes to the mound for the A's when they visit the Jays Thursday.

Syndergaard has been unhittable during the day

Noah Syndergaard has been downright dominant when it comes to pitching in day games this season. Through three early starts this season, Syndegaard is 2-0 with a 0.98 ERA.

The rookie hurler has only surrendered 14 hits and two earned runs through 18.1 innings pitched during those day starts.

Syndergaard, who is coming off one of his worse outings of the season, will take to the mound for the Mets Thursday when they host the Colorado Rockies.

                  Thursday, August 13

Pitcher change - A's Sonny Gray scratched

Toronto vs. Oakland on August 13 at 12:37 PM. New starter: Jesse Chavez, Oakland.

Sonny Gray reportedly is suffering from back spasms and will miss Thursday's start vs. the Blue Jays.

Eovaldi tasked with snapping Yankees' drought

Nathan Eovaldi (11-2, 13-9 O/U) will be on the bump as the New York Yankees look to snap a five-game losing skid when they visit the Cleveland Indians Thursday evening.

The Yankees have lost the first two games of the series with the Tribe after being swept in a three-game set against the now-AL East leading Toronto Blue Jays.

Eovaldi has meant wins for the Bronx Bombers recently, however, as the the club has gone 4-1 in his past five starts - the lone loss coming against the Jays in his last outing.

The Yankees led the division by seven games on July 28 but fell a half-game behind the Toronto Blue Jays following Wednesday's 2-1 loss.

Outbound wind at Wrigley, total hits the board

According to weather forecasts, wind looks like it will be blowing out to center field at around 13 miles per hour at Wrigley Field when the Chicago Cubs host the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday afternoon.

The total for this NL Central battle has hit the board with books offshore and in Las Vegas opening with an 8.5.

Jon Lester is expected to get the start for the Cubs (-220) while Tyler Cravy is slated to start for the Brewers (+201).

Home teams not perfect, but still have strong showing

A day after home teams went a perfect 15-0 for the first time in baseball history and while Wednesday wasn't perfect, they kept the trend hot going 11-4.

That makes home teams 26-4 in the past two days, good for a success rate of 86.67 percent. The Phillies, Reds, Astros and Tigers were the only four road teams to notch wins yesterday.
