Japanese baseball fans react to Iwakuma's no-hitter

    August 13, 2015

TOKYO (AP) Seattle Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma's feat of becoming the second Japanese-born pitcher after Hideo Nomo to throw a no-hitter in the U.S. major leagues was splashed on the home pages of sports newspapers and other media websites in his home country, greeting people as they were waking up Thursday.

''Iwakuma achieves no-hit, no-run! Second Japanese pitcher after Nomo in `01,'' the headline of the lead story on the Sports Nippon newspaper website read.

Japanese baseball fans keenly follow their players in the U.S. major leagues, and game highlights of their exploits are a staple of sports news broadcasts, and reported in the sports pages of newspapers.

The reaction is a bit more muted, though, after two decades of Japanese stars heading to the U.S.

''The nation went berserk when Nomo threw his two no-hitters,'' said Robert Whiting, the author of ''You Gotta Have Wa,'' a book about foreign baseball players in Japan. ''Now, it's been there done that.''

Iwakuma said through an interpreter after the fourth no-hitter in the major leagues this season that he couldn't find the right words to describe his feelings.

    ''I'm truly happy,'' he said.

Iwakuma became the first American League pitcher in nearly three years to throw a no-hitter, silencing the Baltimore Orioles in the Mariners' 3-0 victory on Wednesday.

Iwakuma's father-in-law, who used to coach on the pitcher's team in Japan, the Rakuten Eagles, was at the game.

''I was excited to see (fans) cheering with a standing ovation and getting ecstatic each time he pitched in the last half of the game,'' Koju Hirohashi said in a statement issued by the team. ''Also, I was happy to be able to watch such a game in person. At the beginning, I felt his pitching was a bit rough, but powerful. His fastball and slider were good. I hope he will continue playing without any injuries.''

Talented but often injured since arriving from Japan in 2012, the 34-year-old Iwakuma, a native of Tokyo, didn't overpower the Orioles.

    That's not his style.

Instead, Iwakuma smartly used a biting splitter and precise control to throw the fourth individual no-hitter in franchise history and become the oldest pitcher since Randy Johnson in 2004 to throw a no-no.

The last AL pitcher to keep zeros across the board was teammate Felix Hernandez, who tossed a perfect game at Safeco Field on Aug. 15, 2012. Not surprisingly, Hernandez was one of the first to greet Iwakuma as he was mobbed on the pitcher's mound after the final out, wearing a fuzzy bear hat that was handed out to fans earlier in the season in a promotion to honor Iwakuma.

The right-hander struck out seven and walked three and while Austin Jackson made a solid catch for the final out, the play everyone will remember is Kyle Seager's contorting catch to open the ninth inning. Seager tracked David Lough's foul ball near the stands and made a nifty over-the-shoulder catch for the first out.

Iwakuma missed 2 1/2 months early in the season after straining a muscle in his back and side. He's been solid since returning and there were rumblings around the trade deadline Iwakuma might be moved.

''That's all I thought was to come back and give it all I've got every start and make up for the lost time I had in the first half,'' Iwakuma said.

Benjamin Lang, an American lawyer and baseball fan in Japan agreed about the muted reaction in Tokyo. ''My take is that it's a different era,'' he said. ''Nomo was carrying the weight of the baseball-mad Japanese public when he left for the majors. A Japanese player excelling in the majors is now old hat, and while the no-hitter will be celebrated, it simply won't have the impact that Nomo's first one had.''

          MLB

          Thursday, August 13

Lester has been a boon for under plays

Jon Lester has led the Chicago Cubs to a 3-12-1 over/under record in his past 16 starts. Through those 16 starts, Lester has only given up an average of 5.6 runs per game and 2.1 runs.

On the season as a whole, the Cubs are 6-14 O/U in Lester's starts. That is the third most number of unders this season out of all of the starting pitchers.

Lester and the Cubs will host the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday.

Day games have been where Sonny Gray shines

Sonny Gray can roll out of bed and pitch a marvel it seems, with the right-hander playing phenomenally during day games this season. In eight day starts, Gray has a 5-1 record with a 0.97 ERA while opponents are only hitting .178.

Through those eight games, two of which were complete games, Gray has surrendered six earned runs over 55.2 innings.

Gray takes to the mound for the A's when they visit the Jays Thursday.

Syndergaard has been unhittable during the day

Noah Syndergaard has been downright dominant when it comes to pitching in day games this season. Through three early starts this season, Syndegaard is 2-0 with a 0.98 ERA.

The rookie hurler has only surrendered 14 hits and two earned runs through 18.1 innings pitched during those day starts.

Syndergaard, who is coming off one of his worse outings of the season, will take to the mound for the Mets Thursday when they host the Colorado Rockies.

Game of the day: Eskimos at Alouettes
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rakeem Cato threw for 303 yards and a touchdown, but also had two interceptions, including a pick in Ottawa's end zone in the third quarter of Friday's loss.

Edmonton Eskimos at Montreal Alouettes (PK, 44.5)

The Edmonton Eskimos look to bounce back from a disappointing Week 7 loss when they travel to Montreal to face the Alouettes on Thursday. The Eskimos let one slip away as they blew a 13-point lead in the 26-23 setback to the BC Lions and missed a golden opportunity to take sole possession of first place in the West Division.

Edmonton swept the season series against the Alouettes in 2014, including a 33-23 victory at Molson Stadium, but have dropped six of the last seven meetings in Montreal. The Alouettes are in danger of falling out of contention in the East Division following a 26-23 loss to the Ottawa Redblacks. Montreal defensive end Michael Sam made his much-anticipated debut but it was largely uneventful as the CFL's first openly gay player failed to record a tackle, and the Alouettes fell four points behind the rest of the pack. "This team is going through some adversity right now," Sam told reporters. "Hopefully we put this game aside and focus on Edmonton."

                      TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, TSN, RDS, ESPN2

LINE HISTORY: This game opened as a Pick and the total opened at 45 but has been moved to 44.5.

INJURY REPORT: Eskimos - RB Shakir Bell (Probable, concussion).

ABOUT THE ESKIMOS (4-2 SU, 4-2 ATS, 2-4 O/U): Quarterback Mike Reilly returned to the practice field in a limited role for the first time since injuring his knee in the season-opening loss to the Toronto Argonauts. "He's still a ways away, but when he's completely healthy we'll put him back out there," Edmonton coach Chris Jones told reporters. "He's got distinct cadence so it was good to have him back." Adarius Bowman, who leads the team with 400 receiving yards, sat out the second half with a lower-body injury against the Lions and is questionable for Thursday.

ABOUT THE ALOUETTES (2-4 SU, 4-2 ATS, 1-5 O/U): Rakeem Cato threw for 303 yards and a touchdown, but also had two interceptions, including a pick in Ottawa's end zone in the third quarter. Montreal released kicker Sean Whyte, who lost his starting job to Boris Bede; linebacker Bryn Roy; and wide receiver Dobson Collins, whose fumble proved costly in the loss to the Calgary Stampeders in Week 6. S.J. Green had five receptions for 66 yards to go over the 6,000-yard mark for his career and currently leads the league with 539 receiving yards this season.

                      TRENDS:

                      * Over is 6-0-1 in the last seven meetings.
                      * Eskimos are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 meetings.
                      * Eskimos are 2-5 ATS in their last seven Thursday games.
                      * Alouettes are 8-1 ATS in their last nine home games.

CONSENSUS: Fifty-four percent of users are backing the Alouettes.

CFL Betting Recap - Week 7

                          August 9, 2015

                          League Betting Notes

                          -- Favorites/underdogs went 2-2 SU in Week 7
-- Underdogs went 3-1 ATS in Week 7
-- Home teams posted a 4-0 SU record in Week 7
-- Home teams posted a 3-1 ATS record in Week 7
-- The 'Over' went 3-1 in Week 7

                          Team Betting Notes

-- Hamilton (4-2) routed visiting Winnipeg (3-4) by a 38-8 score for their third consecutive cover, and fifth in six games overall. The 'under' has also cashed in four in a row, and five of six this season. In addition, Hamilton is 2-0 SU/ATS against Winnipeg. Unfortunately for bettors, they are not scheduled to face each other again in the regular season.

-- The Blue Bombers have been all over the board against the spread this season. They're 3-3-1 ATS, and they haven't covered, or failed to cover, in consecutive games through seven. However, one constant has been their defense, or lack of offense, which has resulted in five straight unders.

-- Ottawa (4-2) continues to give Montreal (2-4) fits, coming from behind Friday for a 26-23 win, their second of the season against the Alouettes. Ottawa is 2-0 SU/ATS against Montreal, and they will meet again Oct. 1 in Canada's capital city.

-- The Alouettes are 3-0-1 ATS against all other opponents, and 0-2 ATS against the RedBlacks. Their 'over' Friday night in Ottawa was the first in six games this season.

-- Saskatchewan (0-7) is not getting the results they obviously hoped for, dropping their seventh straight to open the season. Five of their losses are a combined 16 points, so they're not that far off. Their cover in Toronto (4-2) was not a shocker since they're 8-3 ATS in their past 11 trips to Toronto. The Roughriders get a much-needed bye to regroup before hosting Calgary Aug. 22.

-- Calgary (4-2) was off this past week, but they'll be back in action in Week 8 hosting Ottawa. The Stampeders lost to the RedBlacks 29-26 in Ottawa July 24, also failing to cover. That was the only 'over' for Calgary in six tries, too.

-- Edmonton (4-2) suffered its first loss since Week 1, traveling to BC Lions (3-3) for a 26-23 loss. It also ended a four-game cover streak for the Esks. Edmonton is 3-0 SU/ATS at home, and 1-2 SU/ATS in three road outings.

                            August 10, 2015

                            Week 7 Betting Recap

It is no big surprise that the defending CFL Champion Calgary Stampeders are atop the standings in the West Division at 4-2 straight-up in the CFL heading into Week 8 of the regular season, but the East has been turned upside down with both Ottawa and Toronto leading the way with a 4-2 SU record as well.

The British Columbia Lions got things started in Week 7 with a 26-23 upset of Edmonton as 2 ½-point home underdogs and Ottawa followed suit with a 26-23 upset over Montreal as a two-point underdog at home. Toronto closed as a nine-point home favorite against Saskatchewan but it could not cover is a 30-26 victory this past Saturday. Hamilton closed things out in Week 7 with a convincing 38-8 victory against Winnipeg as an 8 ½-point home favorite.

                            Thursday, Aug. 13

Edmonton Eskimos (4-2 SU, 4-2 ATS) vs. Montreal Alouettes (2-4 SU, 3-2-1 ATS)
                            Point-spread: Edmonton -1
                            Total: 45 ½

                            Game Overview

Edmonton will look to bounce back following just its second loss of the season either straight-up or against the spread. The Eskimos opened-up a 23-10 lead at halftime, but they were shutout in the second half. Matt Nichols has been filling in for an injured Mike Reilly at quarterback and while he did throw for 262 yards and two touchdowns, he was also picked-off twice in the losing cause.

The Alouettes have now lost three of their last four games SU with a 2-1-1 record ATS. This will be the first meeting this season against Edmonton, but Montreal is just 1-2 SU (2-0-1 ATS) against the West Division this year. It continues to rely on backup quarterback Rakeem Cato to run the offense. He threw for 303 yards in the loss to Ottawa after completing 20 of his 31 attempts. Cato’s completion rate on the year is a solid 68.6 percent.

                            Betting Trends

Edmonton is just 3-7 ATS in the last 10 meetings, but it won both games last season SU. The total has gone OVER in six of the last seven games between these two.

                            Friday, Aug. 14

Toronto Argonauts (4-2 SU, 4-2 ATS) vs. Winnipeg Blue Bombers (3-4 SU, 3-3-1 ATS)
                            Point-spread: OFF
                            Total: OFF

                            Game Overview

The surprising Argonauts have been getting it done with Trevor Harris under center. He leads the CFL in total passing yards with 1,819 as well as touchdown throws with 14. He has completed 75 percent of his 208 attempts while getting picked-off just four times. Toronto has been one of the higher scoring teams in the CFL this season with an average of 27.7 points a game.

The Blue Bombers have fallen to 1-3 SU (2-2 ATS) in their last four games and they have now been outscored 70-11 in their last two losses. This past Sunday against Hamilton, they fell behind 21-0 in the first quarter and never recovered. Adding injury to insult, Winnipeg quarterback Drew Willy was taken out of the game in the third quarter with an apparent knee injury. His status for this Friday remains questionable at this time.

                            Betting Trends

The home team has won the past three meetings both SU and ATS with the total going OVER in all three contests. Toronto has a 6-3-1 edge ATS in the last 10 meetings.

                            Saturday, Aug. 15

British Columbia Lions (3-3 SU, 3-3 ATS) vs. Hamilton Tiger-Cats (4-2 SU, 5-1 ATS)
                            Point-spread: Hamilton -7 ½
                            Total: 52

                            Game Overview

BC evened its mark on the year both SU and ATS with last week’s upset while snapping a two-game losing streak both ways. It is now 2-0 (SU and ATS) when closing as an underdog. Travis Lulay was not at his best in last week’s win. He completed just 51.6 percent of his 31 attempts for 195 yards and while he did toss two touchdowns, he was also intercepted twice to raise his season total to a league-high seven picks.

The Tiger-Cats only managed to gain 54 yards on the ground in Sunday’s romp. Zach Collaros had another good day throwing the ball with 280 yards and three touchdown passes, but he was also intercepted twice. Hamilton remains the highest scoring team in the CFL with an average of 31.8 points a game. It is allowing an average of 19 points on defense.

                            Betting Trends

The Lions have failed to cover in seven of the last 10 meetings, but they come into the first meeting this season with a slight 3-2 edge ATS in the last five games. The total has gone OVER in four of the last six meetings.

                            Sunday, Aug. 16

Ottawa RedBlacks (4-2 SU, 4-2 ATS) vs. Calgary Stampeders (4-2 SU, 0-6 ATS)
                            Point-spread: Calgary -7 ½
                            Total: 48

                            Game Overview

The RedBlacks have been the biggest surprise of the new CFL season after winning just two games SU last season as an expansion team. They have allowed 19 more points than they have scored and their four SU wins are by a combined 21 points. Veteran quarterback Henry Burris has held up well through the first six games with 1,695 yards passing and nine touchdown throws.

Calgary comes off of it bye following a tight three-point home win against Montreal as a five-point favorite. It was the sixth-straight game this year it failed to cover ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in five of the six games. Bo Levi Mitchell has pretty much gone the distance for the Stampeders at quarterback. He is ranked fourth in the league on total passing yards (1,622) and he has tossed seven touchdown throws against four interceptions.

                            Betting Trends

Ottawa stunned Calgary 29-26 in overtime on July 24 as a 4 ½-point home underdog. This was after the Stampeders swept last season’s two-game series both SU and ATS. The total has gone OVER in two of the three games.
