Over bets hot with Holbrook behind the plate

Over wagers have gone 4-0 in the last four ball games which Sam Holbrook has called balls and strikes. He'll be behind the dish at Citi Field when the New York Mets host the Colorado Rockies Tuesday evening.

Holbrook ranks 10th among umpires with at least 10 games behind the plate in Over/Under record at 11-7. There has been an average of 9.7 runs scored per game when Holbrook is tasked with calling pitches.

In those last four ball games, there has been an average of 13.75 runs crossing the plate.

Matt Harvey is scheduled to start for the Mets while Christopher Rusin is expected to get the ball for the Rox. The total is presently at 7.

      Brewers GM Melvin stepping aside

The Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday said general manager and president of baseball operations Doug Melvin is stepping down and will transition into an advisory role with the team.

Melvin was named general manager in 2002 and took over as president of operations in 20012. At that time he signed an extension through this season.

The Brewers are 48-65 and in last place in the NL Central this season, and they last reached the postseason in 2011.

Reports out of Milwaukee say Melvin's decision takes effect immediately. Craig Counsell is expected to remain the managers.

During Melvin's tenure there have been five managers and the Brewers have made it to the postseason twice. The team has compiled a 1,004-1,052 record.

Nuno proving to be solid addition to Mariners

        Aug 11, 2015

SEATTLE -- Somewhat forgotten in the pre-deadline deal that brought slugger Mark Trumbo from Arizona, left-handed pitcher Vidal Nuno has proven to be a pretty valuable commodity to the Mariners this season.

After proving himself as a durable long reliever when Charlie Furbush went down with a biceps injury, Nuno is now doing a pretty good job filling in as a starter on the Mariners' short-handed rotation. He made his second start of the season Monday, and though he suffered the loss to drop to 0-1 over 20 appearances with the Mariners, Nuno was plenty good enough to keep the Mariners in the game. He allowed two runs off five hits over five innings in the 3-2 loss to Baltimore.

"He just left one pitch up," manager Lloyd McClendon said, referring to a first-inning homer by Orioles center fielder Adam Jones. "Other than that, he did a pretty nice job."

Nuno did enough in his first start last week that McClendon said even before Monday's game that he would get at least one more start. He joined the rotation as a spot starter after lefty J.A. Happ was traded to Pittsburgh, and the lack of a viable option at Triple-A Tacoma has left Nuno as the fifth starter for the time being.

Left-hander Roenis Elias, who had a solid rookie season in 2014 and was solid as a part-time starter with the Mariners earlier this season, is the only Triple-A starter with significant major-league experience, but he's been struggling at Tacoma. Young phenom James Paxton is still making the slow recovery from a nagging finger injury that's kept him out since late May, so the Mariners are suddenly pretty short-handed in terms of quality starters.

For now, Nuno has done his part to make sure Seattle can carry on without much drop-off.

          Cubs streaking versus right handers

The Chicago Cubs have won nine consecutive games against right-handed starters and get to face another when they host the Milwaukee Brewers in the opener of a three-game series Tuesday night.

The Cubs have outscored opponents 42-23 during those nine games, meaning while they are scoring a mediocre 4.67 runs per game over that span, they are allowing a miniscule 2.56 runs at the same time.

Tonight they go up against Brewers righty Taylor Jungman, whom the Cubs defeated 4-1 back on July 31. The Cubs are currently -150 favorites with Dan Haren expected to make his second start for the Cubs.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

            Aug 11, 2015

Spot bets are classic handicapping practices that have proven profitable no matter what sport you're betting. Whether it's a team looking past this week's opponent, one coming off a hard-fought victory, or a rough patch of schedule, bettors can find value picking their spots. Covers Expert Ben Burns points out his favorites:

            Lookahead spot

The New York Yankees were put on notice this weekend: the Blue Jays are coming for them. Toronto entered the weekend set 4.5 games back of the Bronx Bombers in the American League East and now N.Y. holds a slim advantage as it enters a three-game series in Cleveland. The Yankees are chomping at the bit for another shot at the Jays and get that chance on Friday, when the rivals collide in a weekend set at the Rogers Centre.

But before New York can have its revenge, it must finish up with the Indians. Having the Jays on deck Friday creates a massive lookahead spot for the Yankees in the finale with the Tribe. New York is expected to go with starter Nathan Eovaldi in that matchup while Cleveland counters with Trevor Bauer on Thursday.

            Letdown spot

The Ottawa Redblacks have done an about face this season, starting the 2015 CFL campaign with a 4-2 mark and already doubling their season win total from last year when the Redblacks finished 2-16. The latest win was a statement game for the franchise, going into Montreal and spoiling a big day for the rival Alouettes, who were debuting Michael Sam, the first opening gay professional football player.

The buzz is building in Canada’s capital but that emotional win against Montreal sets up Ottawa for a fall in its trip to Calgary in Week 8. The Redblacks face the defending Grey Cup champs who are out to avenge a 29-26 overtime loss in Ottawa back in Week 5. The Stampeders are also coming off a bye week, so it’s no surprise oddsmakers have Calgary sitting with the half point hook as a 7.5-point fave on Saturday.

            Schedule spot

The girls of summer are quickly wrapping up the 2015 WNBA season with about a month remaining on the schedule. The Connecticut Sun, who sit second from the bottom in the Eastern Conference, have plenty of work to do in that short span if they want to make the playoff cut and it starts with a tough stretch of schedule this week.

The Sun tip off their week with a home game versus Tulsa on Wednesday, then host the conference-leading New York Liberty on Friday before traveling to face the Atlanta Sky on Sunday. Connecticut has been playing better this month, after stumbling through a 2-6 SU July in which they covered in just three of those games. But could this three-game, five-night span set them back into that skid?

              Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Steelers lost kicker Shaun Suisham (ACL) for the season Sunday night.

-- Patriots added #3 QB Ryan Lindley, who was awful as an Arizona Cardinal; he will play a lot in preseason I'm guessing, so Pats con protect Brady/Garoppolo.

-- For a while Monday afternoon, A's were selling tickets to their August 21 home game for $5 apiece. $5 for a major league ballgame!!!!

-- Dodgers are 27-17 when Kershaw/Greinke start, 35-33 with everyone else.

-- Cubs scored in the first inning in each of their last six home games.

-- Happy 90th birthday to former President Jimmy Carter.

              **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

              13) OK, I get it; Josh Donaldson might be AL MVP this season, after he was dealt from the A's to Toronto last winter. But I'm tired of hearing people ranting on and on about how stupid the A's were for trading him- its not really true.

Oakland has financial restrictions because their cheap owner (5th-wealthiest owner in MLB) says they do, so while Donaldson is a bargain at $4.3M this year, he begins to break the bank next year, when his three arbitration years start. He'll be making a salary in 8-figure range beginning next year, unless his agent is a moron (doubt it).

To get any significant return on a trade, you have to trade the guy before he becomes a financial burden, so the A's dealt him last winter-- in return, they got:
-- Brett Lawrie 2B/3B-- He is no Donaldson but a decent everday big leaguer.
-- Kendall Graveman P-- Is 6-7, 3.90 in 18 MLB starts this year, isn't bad.
-- Sean Nolin, P-- Lefty starter who is currently hurt in AAA.
-- Franklin Barreto, SS-- Shortstop prospect who replaces Addison Russell in A's infield of future. He is doing pretty well in A ball but is currently hurt.

Did they break even on the trade? Probably not, but a team like the A's has to have solid starting pitching or they have zero chance and they got two starters in this deal, so while Donaldson is a big star, the reality is, the A's could no longer afford him.

              12) We mentioned a place called the NoMad Hotel in NYC last week; place has a bar with a 2-story library and a restaurant-- turns out it is a little expensive, as in $385 if you stayed there last night, a Monday night. For one night. Yikes.

              11) If you watch old episodes of CSI, you can see signs on the Las Vegas Strip of places that no longer exist, like the old Sahara hotel/casino, which is now SLS, where I stayed on my vacation last month. There is a Neon Graveyard in downtown Vegas, where they keep the old huge neon signs that light the strip. Its a cool place.

              10) No one pays to see umpires do their job. No one. Going into Sunday's start against the Mets, Tampa's Chris Archer had walked nine batters in his previous seven starts, but he walked four Mets in the 2nd inning Sunday, because Woodring had a strike zone the size of a small napkin. Again, no one pays to watch the umpire work.

              9) Surprising stat: Last year was first time in five years New England ranked higher than 25th in NFL in yards allowed. Less surprising stat: since 2007, Patriots are 14-5-1 vs spread when they're getting points.

              8) There is a movie called Man from UNCLE coming out soon, the remake of an old TV show that ran from 1964-68, I think on NBC. Would've been nice if they found a spot for Robert Vaughn/David McCallum in the movie, the stars of the old TV show.

McCallum is still on TV; he is Dr Mallard on NCIS. Vaughn has been on Law and Order now and then the last few years.

              7) Louisville plays Auburn in the Georgia Dome September 5; curious to see the reception Louisville coach Bobby Petrino gets, since he quit as coach of the Falcons before his first year ('07) was over-- he had a 3-10 record. Could be an icy reception.

              6) Only 18 of 32 NFL head coaches played Division I-A college football.

              5) Red Sox' Opening Day payroll this year was $184,345,996, third-highest in the major leagues. Captain Obvious called in: they're not getting their money's worth.

              4) LSU sold out its football season tickets for 12th year in a row; if you're scoring at home, that is 74,350 season tickets a year for a dozen years.

              3) As good a pitcher as Noah Syndergaard is, Mets are 1-7 in his road starts.

              2) Modern baseball; When a ballplayer breaks a bat, it goes into the dugout where an authenticator puts a sticker on the bat, then it goes to the team store and is sold to a dumb person who buys broken bats. Seriously; whatever happened to giving broken bats to little kids?

Guy on SNY just said the bat Jose Reyes broke in the first inning Monday would sell for $500-600 in that team store. What jackass would pay $500 for a broken bat?

              1) I read today that the Westgate SuperBook expects Ohio State to be a double digit favorite in every regular season game they play this season. Thats an indictment of the slowish Big 14 and of the Buckeyes' non-league schedule (Virginia Tech, Hawai'i and two MAC schools).
