    WNBA Betting Recap - 8/3-8/9

    August 9, 2015

League Betting Notes (from Monday, Aug. 3 through Sunday, Aug. 9)

-- Favorites went 10-5 straight up
-- Favorites went 8-7 against the spread (ATS)
-- Home teams posted a 13-2 SU record
-- Home teams posted a 11-4 ATS record
    -- The 'under' went 8-7

    Team Betting Notes

-- Washington (13-8) won the second end of a home-and-home against Connecticut (11-10), and the Mystics put the skids on a two-game non-cover streak. The Sun have struggled lately, going 4-9 SU/5-8 ATS over the past 13 games after starting the year 7-1 SU/ATS in the opening eight.

-- Indiana (12-9) split their games this weekend, losing on the road to Chicago (14-9) while blowing out Atlanta (8-14) at home. The Fever have won seven in a row at home, going 5-1-1 ATS over the stretch.

-- Phoenix (14-8) was cooled off by the Sky Sunday afternoon on the road. At home the Mercury is a totally different story, winning seven of their past eight games. They're also 1-5 ATS over their past six outings at home.

-- San Antonio (7-16) hasn't been winning on a regular basis, but they have been fairly reliable against the number lately. The Stars are 7-2 ATS over their past nine games dating back to June 17. San Antonio will hit the road for Minnesota (16-6) Tuesday. The Stars are 0-2 SU/ATS against the Lynx this season, losing by an average of 16.0 points per game.

-- Seattle (5-17) continues to tumble, as they have dropped five in a row. They're starting to struggle against the number, too. They were 10-8 ATS through the first 18 games, but they have failed to cover in three of the past four.

-- The Lynx picked up a win and cover against the Sparks Sunday, ending a mini skid. The good times should continue to roll against the Stars Tuesday, as they're 2-0 SU/ATS in two earlier meetings. Minnesota is 7-1 over the past eight home games while going 6-2 ATS during the span.

-- The 'under' cashed for the Sky Sunday, and it is now 3-1 in the past four games after a four-game over streak.

-- Tulsa (10-13) can't get out of its own way lately, losing their ninth consecutive game dating back to July 11. The Shock was favored by seven Sunday against Atlanta, but they didn't come close to covering in that one and they are 1-7-1 ATS during their nine-game slide.

-- It has been good times for New York (14-6), as the Liberty has won seven of their past eight games, including a win at Chicago in the first end of a home-and-home Friday. They're 6-2 ATS during the impressive run, too. The Liberty and Sky hook up Tuesday at home.

Preview: Sky (14-9) at Liberty (14-6)

      Date: August 11, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

Following an outstanding run with the New York Liberty, Cappie Pondexter returned home when she was traded to the Chicago Sky during the offseason.

As she returns to Madison Square Garden for the first time, Pondexter is hoping to match the performance that New York's Epiphanny Prince had when she was back in Chicago last week.

The Sky have lost twice at home to the Liberty but look to move closer to the Eastern Conference leaders Tuesday night with their seventh consecutive road win in the series.

After winning two WNBA titles with Phoenix, Pondexter was a three-time All-Star during her five-year stint with New York and averaged a career-high 21.4 points in 2010.

In February, the Chicago native was traded to the Sky for Prince. Pondexter (15.0 points per game) has given the Sky another offensive threat behind WNBA scoring leader Elena Delle Donne (24.3) and was selected to her seventh All-Star Game last month.

Pondexter, however, had five points on 2-of-11 shooting in Sunday's 74-64 home win over Phoenix. She also struggled in both meetings with her former team, scoring 19 despite shooting 6 of 17 in an 89-81 loss June 30 and 12 on 2-of-13 shooting in Friday's 77-63 defeat.

Prince shined in her first game back at Allstate Arena after spending five seasons with the Sky. She finished with a career-high 30 points as New York rolled to its seventh victory in eight games.

"We can stay positive because we see these guys two more times and possibly, it could be a matchup in the playoffs," Pondexter said. "We have to learn from the situation, especially the last two games we've played them because we haven't had a good showing."

New York's Tina Charles has played well in the two matchups, totaling 44 points and 23 rebounds. Charles ranks second in the league with 9.3 boards per game and fourth with 17.9 points.

The Liberty (14-6) have done a solid job defensively against the Sky (14-9), who lead the WNBA with 84.2 points per game. Chicago scored a season low in last week's matchup and has shot 34.8 percent while getting outrebounded 83-66 in the season series.

The Sky survived a big scare Sunday when Delle Donne went down with an ankle injury in the second quarter before scoring 16 of her 33 points in the third during the team's third win in four games.

The star forward had 26 points and 13 rebounds against New York in June, but she had 17 and six while shooting 4 for 12 on Friday.

Chicago has won by an average of 14.2 points during its win streak at MSG.

Preview: Fever (12-9) at Mystics (13-8)

        Date: August 11, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

Both the Washington Mystics and Indiana Fever appear to be in top form as the teams square off Tuesday night at the Verizon Center in a showdown between Eastern Conference contenders.

Washington (13-8) has won seven of nine to move percentage points ahead of Chicago for second place in the East, 1 1/2 games behind New York. Indiana (12-9) is just a game back of the Mystics and Sky but just one in front of fifth-place Connecticut.

The Fever have won four of five and start a four-game road stretch off their best performance of the season, Friday's 106-77 drubbing of Atlanta that marked Indiana's largest margin of victory since a 95-61 rout of Connecticut in June 2012.

Indiana matched a franchise record with 59 second-half points and eclipsed 100 for the first time since Aug. 13, 2010, against Phoenix.

"They came out in the second half and they focused more on paying attention to details on both ends of the floor," Fever coach Stephanie White said.

The Fever also established new single-game bests for free throws made (40) and attempted (44) in shaking off a 24-point defeat at Chicago three days earlier.

"We needed this," White said. "It was a really good bounce-back game for us and our players rose to the occasion."

The victory was the Fever's seventh straight at home. They've dropped three of four on the road, though, and take on a Mystics squad that recorded its fifth consecutive win at the Verizon Center by beating Connecticut 84-73 on Sunday.

Washington limited the Sun to 28.3 percent shooting over the first three quarters and led by double digits most of the second half to avenge Friday's 86-72 loss at Connecticut. Stefanie Dolson had 21 points and Tayler Hill chipped in a career-high 20 while making 4 of 5 from 3-point range and shooting 7 of 10 overall.

"There was definite progress from Friday to (Sunday)," coach Mike Thibault said. "I thought we came out with the right mental attitude, particularly on the defensive end."

The Mystics held the Fever to 31.6 percent shooting in a 68-50 win July 17 that began their home streak and snapped a string of four straight Indiana wins in the nation's capital. That included a 81-76 overtime loss that completed the Fever's sweep of last year's conference semifinals.

Indiana, which is 18-11 all-time in Washington, split two meetings with the Mystics in Indianapolis earlier this season. Center Natalie Achonwa had 13 points in a June 20 loss to Washington, but will miss a second straight game competing for Canada in the FIBA Americas Championships.

Fever forward Tamika Catchings needs seven rebounds to pass Tina Thompson (3,070) for second in WNBA history.

          Stars-Lynx Preview

Maya Moore started a new streak for the Minnesota Lynx as they avoided a third straight loss their last time out.

Now the Lynx look to improve their WNBA-best record with two straight games against losing teams, starting with Tuesday night's home matchup against the San Antonio Stars.

Moore's team-record run of 11 games with at least 20 points was snapped last week in defeats to Los Angeles and Phoenix. That gave Minnesota its first losing streak since dropping three straight from Aug. 9-15, 2014.

The reigning MVP fell short of Diana Taurasi's league record of 13 20-point contests in a row, but she regrouped with 20 against the Sparks.

Minnesota (16-6) has beaten San Antonio (7-16) twice this year, holding the Stars to averages of 54.0 points and 32.0 percent shooting. A 66-49 loss to the Lynx on July 12 marked San Antonio's lowest offensive output since falling 84-48 to Los Angeles on June 15, 2013.

Minnesota is tied with Phoenix for the best home record in the league at 9-2, while San Antonio is 0-11 on the road. The Lynx took six of seven from the Stars last season, including a two-game sweep in the first round of the playoffs.

With Sunday's 72-64 victory over the Sparks, Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve felt her team returned to the form it showed in winning seven of eight July 12-Aug. 1.

"I thought we were pretty hard to play against, and that's our goal," Reeve said. "Individually, I said, when you walk out of a game, ask yourself, 'Was I hard to play against?' I thought tonight we were for the most part pretty hard to play against."

Minnesota faces last-place Atlanta on Friday.

The Stars snapped a four-game skid with an 88-81 victory over Seattle on Saturday. San Antonio hit 80 points for the first time since setting a season high in a 102-85 win over the Dream on July 29.

Coach Dan Hughes was on the sideline against the Storm after a collision with Washington's Danielle Robinson during a 66-63 loss Wednesday. Hughes was transported to a hospital and was treated for a lower back injury.

"You've got to give the assistants a lot of credit," Hughes said of James Wade and Vickie Johnson. "I was on my back for a couple days, and we talked, but they put things together. I thought offensively they spent some really good time with the team and it showed."

Jia Perkins has been hot for the Stars in August, averaging 23.5 points in her last four games. Perkins, who missed seven games in July due to a calf injury, has shot 57 percent from the floor in that stretch, which included a 32-point effort Saturday.

"I just want to win. We want to win together," Perkins said. "Whoever's number is called, we just want to be there and be able to finish."

Preview: Storm (5-17) at Sparks (7-15)

            Date: August 11, 2015 10:30 PM EDT

Alana Beard's return coincided with that of Candace Parker, and the duo has helped the Los Angeles Sparks get back into playoff contention in the Western Conference.

Beard may not be around as Los Angeles tries to reverse its fortunes against the Seattle Storm, though.

A quadriceps injury could keep the four-time All-Star out as the Sparks host the league-worst Storm on Tuesday night.

Beard played the first two games during Los Angeles' team-worst 0-7 start, totaling 30 points in losses to Seattle on June 6 and 14. She would miss the next 14 with plantar fasciitis before returning July 29 along with Parker, who sat out the first half of the season to rest.

The Sparks (7-15) lost Parker's season debut to Minnesota before winning four straight and moving into the fourth and final playoff spot in the West. Beard, though, was injured after playing only seven-plus minutes Sunday as Los Angeles fell 72-64 to the Lynx.

Nneka Ogwumike scored 18 points and Jantel Lavender added 13, but Parker went 3 of 10 from the field and had 10. There hasn't been any word regarding the seriousness of Beard's injury, leaving her status uncertain.

The Storm (5-17) also beat the Sparks 68-61 on July 15 before Beard and Parker returned, forcing 25 turnovers. They haven't had much success against the rest of the WNBA, though, and their only road victory in 13 tries was against Los Angeles on June 14.

Seattle has lost five in a row, including the first four of a six-game road trip that ends Wednesday against Phoenix. It shot 53 percent from the floor Saturday against San Antonio but fell behind by 15 after one quarter and committed 15 turnovers in an 88-81 loss.

Those miscues overshadowed an uncharacteristically strong offensive performance from the Storm, who are last in the league with 69.9 points per game while shooting 43.1 percent.

Crystal Langhorne scored a season-high 29 points and hit 12 of 13 from the floor.

"She really got it going," coach Jenny Boucek told the team's official website. "Give our team credit for finding her, getting her open and finding her, and then she did the rest. So it was a good game for Crystal. It's unfortunate we don't get the reward."

Rookie Jewell Loyd scored 16 points and Sue Bird had 13 assists. Jenna O'Hea had 14 points starting in place of Alysha Clark, who was not with the team for undisclosed reasons.

It's unclear if Clark will rejoin the Storm for either of the last two games of the trip.

MLB betting cheat sheet: Blue Jays blasting off

                          Aug 10, 2015

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the mid-week major-league schedule:

                          The Invincibles

The Toronto Blue Jays have won eight straight, and 11 of their last 12. The only loss during that span was also the only game that Tulowitzki didn't play since coming over from Colorado. David Price has allowed one run on six hits, striking out 18 in 15 innings, winning his first two starts as a Blue Jay. The Jays will host the last place A's in a three game series at Rogers Center starting Tuesday, before welcoming the Yankees to town on Friday.

                          Houston, We Have A Problem

The Astros can't seem to win on the road. They've dropped six of seven on their current road trip, and now own a record of 23-34 away from home this season. They will be in San Francisco for the final two games of this West Coast swing on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Giants have won eight of their last nine at AT&T Park.

                          Home Sick

The Chicago White Sox have scored a major league low 175 runs at home at U.S. Cellular Field. They lost 4-of-6 on their most recent home stand, and they've dropped eight of their last 10 overall. The Sox will host the Angels in a home series starting Monday, and they've lost seven of the last eight versus Los Angeles.

                          Hitting Notes

                          * Joey Votto is tearing up the National League since the All Star break, batting a major league best .414 with four home runs and nine RBIs. He also leads the majors in walks, and he's batting .303 for the season. He's facing Ian Kennedy in Game 1 in San Diego, and he's 5-for-12 with a pair of doubles lifetime versus the veteran.

                          * Josh Donaldson hit his 31st home run of the season in the Bronx on Sunday, and he's now just two off the major league lead behind Nelson Cruz and Mike Trout. He's facing his former team this week, and he's hit .391 over only a combined 23 at bats versus the A's pitching staff. He's hit 20 of his 31 home runs at Rogers Center.

                          Pitching Notes

                          * Eduardo Rodriguez has been a Jekyll & Hyde pitcher so far for the Red Sox, with dramatic splits in day versus night games. The 22 year old southpaw is 5-1 with a 1.75 ERA at night, but 1-3 with a 9.82 ERA during the day. His next start comes against Miami in a matinee at Marlins Park, and it might also be worth noting that the Fish are batting an NL best .278 versus left-handed pitching.

                          * Gerrit Cole will go for his major league leading 15th win on Wednesday, and the 24 year old boasts a record of 13-1 versus National League teams not named the Cincinnati Reds. For whatever reason, Cole hasn't been able to figure out Cincinnati, going 0-3 with a 5.95 ERA against the Reds this season. His next start comes in St. Louis, and he beat the Cardinals in the only previous meeting this season.

                          Totals Streak

The Arizona Diamondbacks have played six straight unders at home, and they have failed to reach the total in eight straight as a home favorite. They host Philly in Game 1 of a new series starting Monday, and the Phillies have seen the total come up short in six of their last seven visits to Arizona.

                          Injury Notes

                          * Jose Fernandez will land on the DL with a sore bicep, and that's a big blow to Miami. The 23 year old triumphantly returned from Tommy John surgery to go 4-0 with a 2.30 ERA in seven starts.

                          * Edwin Encarnacion missed the series finale in New York with a sore finger on his left hand. He's officially listed as day to day, and will likely see action in the home series versus Oakland.

                          Weather Notes

                          * Wind is expected to be blowing out to leftfield at around 13 miles per hour when the New York Mets host the Colorado Rockies at Citi Field Monday.

                          * At Wrigley Field on Tuesday, wind will be blowing in from leftfield at 11 miles per hour when the Chicago Cubs host the Milwaukee Brewers Tuesday.

Holy $hit Betting Stat of the Day: Reds are a red-hot under play

The Cincinnati Reds' offense has disappeared and it has the under red-hot, going 12-1-1 in their last 14 contests, including their last nine games in a row.

The Red' offense is scoring just 3.07 runs per game during that stretch and if you take away the one game they went over, (a 15-5 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 30) they are scoring a miniscule 2.15 runs per game.

Cincinnati continues their three-game series against the Padres in San Diego Tuesday night, where the total currently sits at 7.5 runs.

Right-hander Michael Lorenzen (4.84 ERA, 7-8 O/U) is expected to make the start for the Reds, while the Padres will counter with righty Colin Rea, who makes his first career big league start.

Angels look to Santiago to end road slide

The Los Angeles Angels hope starter Hector Santiago can end their seven game road losing streak when they visit the Chicago White Sox Tuesday night.

Santiago has won his last five games as a road favorite and the Angels will need that considering they have been outscored 40-17 during their seven game road slump.

The Angels are currently -125 favorites going up against White Sox left Carlos Rodon.
