Preview: Orioles (57-54) at Mariners (52-61)
    Game: 2
    Venue: Safeco Field
    Date: August 11, 2015 10:10 PM EDT

If there is such a thing as West Coast pride, Chris Tillman certainly has it based on how he's fared against the three AL teams located there.

The Baltimore Orioles starter hasn't lost to any of those clubs, including a 6-0 mark against the Seattle Mariners heading into the middle game of this series Tuesday night.

The Anaheim-born Tillman (8-7, 4.35 ERA) is 9-0 with a 2.21 ERA in 15 starts against Seattle (52-61), Oakland and the Los Angeles Angels. He is also 9-0 with a 2.09 ERA in 13 career road outings against the AL West.

More pertinent to this outing is his 6-0 mark and 2.09 ERA in seven starts versus the Mariners, who drafted him in 2006. The one he didn't win was a May 21 outing in which he left after three innings with a 3-1 lead because of back spasms in an eventual 5-4 victory.

Robinson Cano is a .414 hitter with two homers in 29 at-bats versus Tillman, though he's an exception among the Mariners. Austin Jackson, Kyle Seager, Nelson Cruz, Brad Miller and Jesus Montero are batting a combined .118 against the right-hander in 51 at-bats.

Tillman hasn't pitched since July 29, when he injured an ankle covering first base during a 2-0 victory over Atlanta even though he came within an out of pitching his second career shutout. He improved to 6-0 with a 2.97 ERA in his last 10 starts and has a 0.38 ERA in three since the All-Star break.

Seattle starter Taijuan Walker (8-7, 4.67), meanwhile, is 0-3 with a 4.31 ERA in five career outings versus the AL East. His lone one against Baltimore (57-54) came when he left after giving up four runs in 3 2-3 innings and didn't get a decision in a 9-4 loss May 19.

The right-hander has a 7.41 ERA in his last three home starts, though that figure is at 2.20 in his last two overall while on the road.

The Orioles have alternated wins and losses through seven of nine games on this trip after Monday's 3-2 victory. Chris Davis and Adam Jones hit solo homers and combined for the other run when Jones doubled and Davis singled him home in the fourth inning.

Davis is hitting .350 with six homers and 17 RBIs in his last 11 games.

"Right now, he's been swinging the bat the last two weeks so let's keep him going the next seven weeks and hopefully into the postseason," Jones said.

Baltimore moved within two games of the Angels for the AL's second wild card.

Franklin Gutierrez was 2 for 4 with a homer and scored both runs for Seattle.

"We played an extremely good game, they played a good game and they beat us," manager Lloyd McClendon said.

Cruz is batting .414 during a career-best 20-game hitting streak, though his nine-game run with an extra-base hit ended Monday. He is 6 for 14 against the Orioles, whom he drilled a major league-best 40 homers for last season.

The slugger has a homer in nine at-bats versus Tillman and is tied with the Angels' Mike Trout for the major league lead with 33 - including seven in his last 10 games.

Preview: Nationals (58-53) at Dodgers (62-50)
      Game: 2
      Venue: Dodger Stadium
      Date: August 11, 2015 10:10 PM EDT

Zack Greinke's bat made more of an impact than his arm in his latest effort.

After his worst start in three years, Greinke goes for a seventh straight win as he tries to help the Los Angeles Dodgers snap their longest losing streak of the season Tuesday night against the visiting Washington Nationals.

Greinke (11-2, 1.71 ERA) owns the lowest ERA in baseball, despite surrendering five runs before recording an out Thursday at Philadelphia. He made up for it by going 3 for 3 with a solo homer and three runs in a 10-8 win.

"I was mad after the first inning so I had motivation to get more hits," said Greinke, who went six innings and gave up six earned runs for the first time since a loss with the Los Angeles Angels on Aug. 19, 2012.

The right-hander is still 6-0 with a 1.39 ERA in his last nine starts and he last won seven straight decisions in a single season during a span of nine games from Aug. 5-Sept. 17, 2013.

Greinke's current unbeaten stretch includes yielding three hits with a season-high 11 strikeouts in eight innings of a 5-0 win at Washington on July 19. He's 4-1 with a 1.73 ERA in six career starts against the Nationals, and his RBI single was the difference in winning the most recent at Dodger Stadium on May 15, 2013.

Since joining Los Angeles before 2013, Greinke is 23-5 with a 2.10 ERA in 41 starts at Dodger Stadium - 5-1 with a 1.54 ERA in 12 games this year.

Los Angeles hasn't won since Greinke's latest start, compiling an 8.47 ERA during a four-game slide after falling 8-3 in Monday's series opener.

The Dodgers (62-50) are 2 1/2 games ahead of San Francisco for the NL West lead, and the Nationals (58-53) are trying to close the 1 1/2-game gap on the New York Mets for first in the East.

Washington, though, has alternated wins and losses over the last seven games after losing four in a row.

Joe Ross (3-3, 2.80) will try to break that trend as he takes the mound with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 11.75, the highest since 1900 by a rookie with at least 45 innings.

The 22-year-old right-hander had seven strikeouts and no walks while yielding one run in six innings of an 8-3 win over Arizona on Thursday. That earned Ross a spot in the rotation at the expense of Doug Fister, who moved to the bullpen.

"You see progress in what he has been able to do," ace Max Scherzer told MLB's official website. "You could see the command of the off-speed pitches. That's vital to have success (in the big leagues).

"He doesn't strike me as a rookie. He strikes me as somebody who has pitched a couple of years in the big leagues. That's so encouraging from within seven starts."

Ross is facing the Dodgers for the first time, and he's 1-1 with a 3.10 ERA, 21 strikeouts and three walks in 20 1-3 innings over three road starts.

Ian Desmond is on a tear, going 8 for 19 with three homers, two doubles and six RBIs in five games. He had a two-run shot and a solo blast among his three hits in the opener, but he's 0 for 13 versus Greinke.

Yunel Escobar is 1 for 9 in the matchup but his two hits Monday gave him a .417 average in his last nine games at Los Angeles.

Preview: Reds (49-61) at Padres (53-60)
        Game: 2
        Venue: PETCO Park
        Date: August 11, 2015 10:10 PM EDT

A matchup with the Cincinnati Reds gave the San Diego Padres just what they needed to end one of their longest losing streaks of the season.

Colin Rea will now try to help San Diego add to its recent dominance against Cincinnati in his major league debut Tuesday night.

The Padres (53-60) had matched a season high by dropping six in a row before a 2-1 win in Monday's opener against the visiting Reds (49-61).

Justin Upton's fourth-inning homer scored both runs to give San Diego its eighth win in 10 games against Cincinnati since the beginning of last season. The Padres have also claimed the last four home meetings against the Reds, who have lost five of six overall.

Rea will try to extend that run in his first big league start. The right-hander's most recent appearance in a major league stadium was July 12 in the All-Star Futures Game in Cincinnati. Rea got the final two outs for the U.S. team in a 10-1 rout of the World squad.

"I am obviously nervous and excited at the same time," he told MLB's official website. "I just want to go out there and compete. Just kind of take it like another start and do whatever I can to help the team win."

Padres interim manager Pat Murphy indicated Rea won't have a predetermined innings or pitch threshold in his seventh start beyond Double-A.

"We are not going to let him out there to dry, but he's been starting all year and he's in shape to go as long as he needs to go," Murphy said. "(We are) not going to put a limit on it. It's his first major league start, you know, so you have to be mindful of that and all the things that come with that."

Rea will be opposed by Michael Lorenzen (3-7, 4.84), who is 0-5 with an 8.04 ERA in his last six starts. The rookie right-hander yielded three runs and walked four over five innings in a 3-0 loss to St. Louis on Thursday.

Lorenzen has given out 22 free passes in his past 33 2-3 innings, allowing opponents to register a .404 on-base percentage.

"It's easy to overlook the fact that he's a young, inexperienced major league pitcher," manager Bryan Price said. "He's got a lot of room to grow."

Lorenzen allowed three runs in six innings in his only start against San Diego on June 6 and was denied a win when the Padres bullpen gave up six runs in a 9-7 loss.

Matt Kemp's solo homer and a two-run double against him in that game were among his season-high five RBIs. Yonder Alonso had two singles in three at-bats.

Jay Bruce hit his 200th career homer for Cincinnati in Monday's loss.

          Tuesday's Tip Sheet

          August 11, 2015

Athletics at Blue Jays – 7:05 PM EST

There is little shock that Toronto has run off eight consecutive wins since acquiring Troy Tulowitzki and David Price prior to the trade deadline. However, the Jays distanced themselves from the Twins in the Wild Card race with a four-game sweep, while pulling off a three-game road sweep of the AL East-leading Yankees this past weekend to cut the division deficit to 1 ½ games.

Toronto starts up a three-game set with Oakland as right-hander Drew Hutchison (10-2, 5.42 ERA) looks to stay unbeaten for the fifth consecutive start. Hutchison’s ERA is through the roof for a starting pitcher, but owns some of the best run support in baseball with the Jays furnishing him with an average of seven runs per outing. Toronto is unbeaten in Hutchison’s last seven starts at Rogers Center, while the Jays are 5-1 to the ‘over’ in his past six trips to the mound overall.

The A’s wrapped up a 6-5 homestand with three victories over the AL West leaders, limiting the Astros to six runs in the final three games. Kendall Graveman (6-7, 3.90 ERA) attempts to get on track, failing to record a win in his past five starts. The Oakland right-hander struggled against this loaded Toronto lineup on July 21, allowing six earned runs in 5.1 innings of a 7-1 defeat, while also yielding three home runs. The A’s began the season 4-0 in Graveman’s first four starts as a road underdog, but own a dreadful 1-4 mark in his past five in the away ‘dog role.

Rangers at Twins – 8:10 PM EST

Two weeks ago, Minnesota held on to the final Wild Card spot in the American League, but a 3-12 slump for the Twins has dropped them below .500 and four games behind the Angels for a playoff position. Two of those three wins came by one run apiece, while Minnesota’s pitching has been racked by giving up at least eight runs in each of the past five games.

The Rangers continue their road trip after dropping two of three at Seattle, sending out veteran Yovani Gallardo (8-9, 3.47 ERA) to the mound in the opener. Texas has won each of Gallardo’s last three starts, but the righty has given up 13 runs in this stretch, with each of the three victories coming by one run each. Gallardo has seen his ups and downs pitching on the highway, as the Rangers are 3-1 in his past four road starts.

Kyle Gibson (8-9, 3.78 ERA) closed the first half with four consecutive wins for the Twins, but the All-Star break crushed the right-hander’s momentum. Minnesota has put together a 1-3 record in his four starts after the break, while giving up at least six runs in the three losses. For the exception of allowing to six runs to the Yankees on July 26, Hughes has given up two runs or less in four of his past five starts at Target Field.

Pirates at Cardinals – 8:15 PM EST

St. Louis still owns an arm-length five-game advantage over Pittsburgh in the NL Central, but the Pirates put together an impressive three-game home sweep of the Dodgers. Pittsburgh and St. Louis play nine more times in the regular season, including six at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals finished off their six-game road trip at 4-2, bookended with one-run losses to the Reds and Brewers.

The last time Carlos Martinez (11-4, 2.57 ERA) faced the Pirates at PNC Park prior to the All-Star break, the Cardinals’ right-hander tossed 7.1 scoreless innings in a 4-1 victory. St. Louis is unbeaten in Martinez’s last six starts at Busch Stadium dating back to late May, while posting an incredible 12-1 record in his past 13 starts overall. The ‘under’ has cashed in 10 of Martinez’s last 12 outings, as St. Louis is currently riding a 6-1 ‘under’ stretch in the last seven games overall.

Pittsburgh and Chicago are the two Wild Card leaders in the National League, as the Pirates have scored 31 runs during their four-game winning streak. Jeff Locke (6-6, 4.31 ERA) went through four straight starts from late June through July receiving four total runs of supports. However, the Pirates’ offense has helped out the young southpaw by scoring 19 runs in his past three outings, all Pittsburgh victories. Locke has split a pair of starts against the Cardinals this season, allowing seven runs in 11.1 innings of work.

Nationals at Dodgers – 10:10 PM EST

It’s turned into a struggle for the Dodgers of late, dropping four straight games following Monday’s 8-3 home defeat to the Nationals. Los Angeles was swept this past weekend at Pittsburgh, then traveled cross-country for Monday’s contest that saw Adrian Gonzalez, Yasmani Grandal, and Howie Kendrick all sit out. Now, Los Angeles will try to get on track with one of its two aces taking the mound in Game 2 of this crucial series.

Zack Greinke (11-2, 1.71 ERA) shut down the Nationals the last time he faced them in Washington on July 19, tossing eight scoreless innings and striking out 11 in a 5-0 triumph. Greinke allowed a season-high six runs in his last start against the Phillies, but the Dodgers held on for a 10-8 win as a -265 road favorite. The former Cy Young winner is unbeaten in his last four starts at Chavez Ravine, while giving up just two earned runs in this stretch.

Washington counters with right-hander Joe Ross (3-3, 2.80 ERA), who silenced the Arizona bats in his last outing, an 8-3 home victory as a -175 favorite. Ross has walked just four batters in 45 innings of work, while tossing at least six innings in each of his past six outings. Since the All-Star break, the Nationals own a 4-7 road record, as Washington is listed as a road underdog of +145 or higher for just the second time this season.

Astros at Giants – 10:15 PM EST

Each of these teams is desperate to get on track heading into a quick two-game set at AT&T Park. San Francisco returns home after losing all four games at Wrigley Field to the Cubs, but still sits 2 ½ games behind Los Angeles in the NL West thanks to the Dodgers’ recent woes. The Astros have been awful away from Minute Maid Park recently, losing three of four this past weekend at Oakland, falling to 3-16 in their last 19 road contests.

It’s a battle of left-handers on the mound in the series opener with Madison Bumgarner and Scott Kazmir squaring off. Bumgarner (12-6, 3.28 ERA) has won four of his past five starts, while allowing one earned run in three of those outings, including one run in 7.1 innings of a 6-1 victory at Atlanta his last time out. All five of San Francisco’s home losses with Bumgarner on the hill have come as a favorite of at least -150, as the southpaw opened as a -140 favorite for tonight.

Kazmir (6-6, 2.08 ERA) makes his fourth start for the Astros since getting dealt from the A’s in late July. The southpaw suffered his first loss in a Houston uniform in a 4-3 loss at Texas last Wednesday, but Kazmir is listed in the underdog role for the third time this season tonight. The previous time Kazmir faced the Giants at AT&T Park last July, he scattered three hits in seven scoreless innings as the A’s pulled off a 6-1 victory.

LEADING OFF: Blue Jays try for 9th W in row, Greinke streak

            August 11, 2015

A look at what's happening all around the major leagues today:

            DEADLINE BOOST

Since acquiring shortstop Troy Tulowitzki from Colorado, the Blue Jays are 11-0 with him in the starting lineup. Toronto has won eight straight overall and tries to extend the streak when it hosts Oakland. Tulowitzki, acquired July 28, is hitting .244 with three homers, two doubles and six RBIs in 12 appearances with the Blue Jays. At the time of the deal, Toronto was in fourth place in the AL East, trailing New York by eight games. Now, the Blue Jays are just 1 1/2 games behind.

            NO ''L'' IN GREINKE

Dodgers ace Zack Greinke hasn't lost a start since June 13, a stretch of nine outings in which he's picked up six victories. The right-hander next pitches at home against Washington. His last time out, Greinke moved to 11-2 this season despite allowing six earned runs over six innings at Philadelphia.

            COUNTING CUBS

After finishing a four-game sweep of the Giants, the Cubs look to stretch their winning streak at Wrigley Field when they host Milwaukee. Dan Haren makes his second start for Chicago, having lost his debut after being acquired from Miami.

            STRONG START

Fresh off an impressive major league debut, Luis Severino will make his second start for the Yankees as they open a three-game series at Cleveland. The right-hander limited Boston to two runs over five frames in a loss last Wednesday, becoming the first AL pitcher to allow two hits or fewer, walk none and strike out at least seven in his first pro appearance, the Yankees said in citing the Elias Sports Bureau.

            WELCOME BACK

Michael Cuddyer is set to rejoin the Mets' lineup when the NL East leaders host Colorado. The 36-year-old came off the disabled list Monday and didn't start. Cuddyer was the team's main left fielder until being sidelined by inflammation in his knee. But with the emergence of rookie outfielder Michael Conforto, Terry Collins says Cuddyer will be used in other places than left.

              Baseball Capsules

              August 11, 2015

NEW YORK (AP) Daniel Murphy drove in two runs with a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning, and the Mets rallied for a 4-2 victory over Colorado on Monday night.

The Mets wasted three-run leads in two straight losses to Tampa Bay last weekend, then went ahead against Colorado on Travis d'Arnaud's first homer since June 20. It was the only hit for the NL East leaders off Jon Gray, the hard-throwing right-hander making his second major league start.

Carlos Gonzalez hit a two-run shot in the fourth off Jonathon Niese (7-9). It was Gonzalez's 13th homer since the All-Star break.

The Mets loaded the bases against Justin Miller (1-1) in the seventh after Gray, the No. 3 overall draft pick in 2013, was pulled after 75 pitches. Miller gave up a single to d'Arnaud, walked Michael Conforto and Ruben Tejada. Boone Logan entered and hit Curtis Granderson with a full-count pitch to tie it.

Murphy then grounded a single past diving shortstop Jose Reyes for a 4-2 lead.

              ROYALS 4, TIGERS 0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Johnny Cueto threw a four-hitter in his home debut with the Royals.

Cueto (1-1) did not allow a runner past second base, struck out eight and walked none. It was his sixth career shutout and second this season. Cueto was acquired from Cincinnati on July 26 for three pitching prospects.

Tigers lefty Matt Boyd, who was acquired from Toronto on July 30 in the David Price trade, gave up three runs in the first inning.

Boyd (1-3), who beat Cueto and the Royals 2-1 last Wednesday when he allowed seven hits and one run over seven innings in his Tigers debut, gave up singles to Alcides Escobar and Ben Zobrist on his first two pitches.

Lorenzo Cain doubled to center, scoring both. Kendrys Morales' one-out single produced the third run of the inning.

              WHITE SOX 8, ANGELS 2

CHICAGO (AP) - Chris Sale allowed two runs and five hits in 7 1-3 innings, and Avisail Garcia homered twice to drive in four runs for the White Sox.

Tyler Flowers added a solo shot to back Sale (10-7), who didn't allow more than one baserunner in an inning until Johnny Giavotella drove in two runs with a double in the seventh.

Angels starter Matt Shoemaker (5-8) had thrown 19 consecutive scoreless innings before Melky Cabrera's sacrifice fly put Chicago ahead 1-0 in the first.

Shoemaker hadn't allowed a run in his last three starts, but was tagged for seven and nine hits in 5 2-3 innings as Los Angeles dropped its seventh straight on the road.

Garcia had his third career multihomer game to reach 11 for the season, and his three-run drive was the big blow as the White Sox sent nine hitters to the plate and pulled away with a four-run sixth.

              DIAMONDBACKS 13, PHILLIES 3

PHOENIX (AP) - Welington Castillo tied a career high with four RBIs and Yasmany Tomas and A.J. Pollock homered to lead Arizona.

Arizona scored three runs in the fifth to break a 2-2 tie, highlighted by Castillo's solo shot with two outs. Castillo has eight home runs and 14 RBIs in his last 12 games.

Castillo went deep to center in the fifth for his 15th home run and a 5-2 lead.

The Diamondbacks put up six runs in the sixth with Castillo driving in three with a triple and scoring on a single by Tomas.

Peralta finished 3 for 5 with two RBIs and Pollock had three hits.

Phillies starter Aaron Harang (5-13) left after 5 1-3 innings having allowed eight runs and 12 hits.

Arizona starter Rubby De La Rosa (10-5) lasted six innings and allowed three runs and eight hits.

              NATIONALS 8, DODGERS 3

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Gio Gonzalez scattered seven hits over eight scoreless innings and Ian Desmond hit two homers as Washington kicked off a 10-game trip.

Gonzalez (9-4) struck out six, walked one and stranded eight runners. The left-hander is 5-0 with a 1.48 ERA in eight starts since losing 6-1 at Tampa Bay on June 15.

Brett Anderson (6-7) was charged with seven runs and 10 hits through five-plus innings.

Carl Crawford hit a three-run shot in the ninth off Doug Fister, the first pinch-hit homer of his career.

The Dodgers' four-game losing streak is their first since Sept. 2-13. They were the only team this season that hadn't lost more than three straight.

              ORIOLES 3, MARINERS 2

SEATTLE (AP) - Chris Davis hit a go-ahead single and his 30th home run for Baltimore.

Adam Jones launched his 18th homer in the first inning off Seattle starter Vidal Nuno (0-1) and scored on Davis' base hit in the fourth. Davis then hit a line drive out to center off reliever Mayckol Guaipe in the sixth.

Davis reached 30 homers for the third time in four years. He led the majors with 53 in 2013.

Seattle slugger Nelson Cruz extended his hitting streak to a career-high 20 games with an opposite-field single leading off the fourth. His streak of nine straight games with an extra-base hit came to an end.

Dodgers place 2B Howie Kendrick on DL

                August 10, 2015

LOS ANGELES (AP) The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed second baseman Howie Kendrick on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left hamstring and recalled infielder Jose Peraza from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Kendrick, in his first season with the Dodgers after nine years with the Angels, is hitting .296 with nine homers and 49 RBIs in 105 games this season. He was injured while beating out an infield single in the fifth inning of the Dodgers' 13-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday night.

''I don't know how bad the MRI is at this point, but we know he's bad enough to put him on the DL,'' manager Don Mattingly said before Monday night's home game with the Arizona Diamondbacks. ''We just don't know how severe it is, and hamstrings are never going to be three or four days. They're going to be a couple of weeks at least, and then we'll see where we're at.

''It's a big loss for us, but we've got some guys who are capable and are going to get opportunities. So we look forward to it,'' Mattingly added.

Peraza made his major league debut Monday night, starting at second base and batting second in the opener of the three-game series with Washington.

The 21-year-old was acquired from Atlanta as part of an eight-player trade on July 30. In 106 combined games with Oklahoma City and the Braves' Triple-A Gwinnett club, Peraza batted .302 with 27 stolen bases, four homers and 41 RBIs.

Blue Jays surge, have 'special feeling'

                  August 10, 2015

TORONTO (AP) When Minnesota Twins manager Paul Molitor felt the energy inside Rogers Centre during David Price's debut for the Toronto Blue Jays, it reminded him of SkyDome a long time ago.

''I've seen that atmosphere here before,'' said Molitor, the Blue Jays' designated hitter when they last won the World Series in 1993. ''It was nice to see. The Toronto fans have had to wait for a long time.''

The Blue Jays haven't made the playoffs since then, but their recent run amid a flurry of trades at the deadline has the city and the clubhouse buzzing. Winners of eight in a row, Toronto has only lost once since acquiring star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki.

Fresh off getting Tulowitzki, Price, outfielder Ben Revere and relievers LaTroy Hawkins and Mark Lowe, the Blue Jays swept the New York Yankees over the weekend to move within 1 1/2 games of the AL East leaders.

Even before that pitching-led domination at Yankee Stadium, players started to sense a different feeling than ever before.

Starter Mark Buehrle said this is reminiscent of 2005, when he won the World Series with the Chicago White Sox. Boosted by a bruising lineup and a strong staff, the Blue Jays have an aura of invincibility about them.

''There were times when we'd be down two runs in the seventh inning and it was like, `We don't care, we're going to win this game, somehow we're going to find a way to win this game,' and we do,'' Buehrle said recently.

''I don't know if it's the guys we brought in here, or the way we're playing right now, it's just that feeling that if we get down two runs in the first or second inning, just try to hold the other team down because we know we're going to score runs, especially with this offense, we can put up a bunch of runs,'' he said.

Led by MVP candidate Josh Donaldson and sluggers Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion, the Blue Jays lead the majors with 5.28 runs a game. After adding Tulowitzki, Donaldson called it ''the best lineup in baseball,'' and it's hard to argue that right now.

Toronto's pitching has drastically improved, too. The staff allowed just one run in three games against the Yankees after the rotation was stellar in a four-game sweep of the Twins.

The combination of power that Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost called ''ridiculous'' and timely pitching has been a winning recipe.

''I feel like synergy's a good word for this team,'' knuckleballer R.A. Dickey said. ''The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. I'm just a puzzle piece and so is Josh, and as big of a name as Tulo is he's just a piece, and we all know it. It's neat to play on a team like that.''

As good as the hitters were, the Blue Jays were out of a playoff spot and hanging around .500 when general manager Alex Anthopoulos traded a pile of pitching prospects to improve this team for this run.

Since the additions, Rogers Centre has been the site of multiple sellouts, with the Blue Jays anticipating many more in the coming weeks. On the field and in the clubhouse, the ''special feeling'' that Buehrle said was hard to describe is having a real impact.

''We are very confident, no doubt about that,'' manager John Gibbons said. ''It's really picked up since Alex made those trades. It's a better team, no question about that, but we're feeling really good right now.''

Game of the Day: Pirates at Cardinals
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals (OFF, OFF)

The Pittsburgh Pirates experienced their fair share of heartbreak in their first four games against the St. Louis Cardinals, but spent most of the rest of the first half of the season getting payback. The teams with the two best records in the National League will resume their rivalry on Tuesday when the visiting Pirates try to trim a five-game gap in the Central against the league-best Cardinals in the opener of a three-game set.

St. Louis (71-49) swept Pittsburgh at home to begin May, registering three straight one-run extra-inning victories, and opened with a road victory against the Pirates the following weekend. Pittsburgh (65-44) rebounded by winning that series and claimed five of the next six meetings to level the season series, even stealing the final three – the last two of which were also decided in extra innings – before the All-Star break. The Cardinals’ pitching staff saw their 38-inning scoreless streak come to an end in Sunday’s 5-4 loss at Milwaukee, which also snapped St. Louis’ four-game winning streak. The Pirates took advantage of the Cardinals’ rare setback, however, inching closer to their division rival after completing a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.

                          LINE HISTORY: N/A

INJURY REPORT: Pirates: Guerra (15-day DL), Burnett (early September), Mercer (early September.), Harrison (late August), Hart (60-day DL), Lambo (60-day DL), Cumpton (out for season). Cardinals: Holliday (15-day DL), Jay (15-day DL), Walden (60-day DL), Belisle (60-day DL), Wainwright (60-day DL), Adams (60-day DL).

WEATHER REPORT: Currently, the forecast is calling for a clear night in St. Louis with temperatures ranging in the 81 degrees Fahrenheit ballpark. At the time of writing, winds of 7 mph blowing in from left field were expected at game time.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates LH Jeff Locke (6-6, 4.31 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Carlos Martinez (11-4, 2.57)

Locke continued his recent struggles in Wednesday’s 7-5 win over the Chicago Cubs, failing to factor into the decision after surrendering four runs – including a pair of homers – in 5 2/3 frames. The 27-year-old New Hampshire native has yielded at least three runs in each of his last four turns and failed to complete six innings in each of his previous three outings. Locke took the loss on July 9 after giving up four runs (one earned) in five innings against St. Louis, falling to 2-3 with a 3.55 ERA in seven career starts versus the Cardinals.

After going 11-4 with a 2.34 ERA through his first 20 appearances (18 starts), Martinez turned in his second mediocre start in a no-decision on Wednesday, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits and three walks over five innings at Cincinnati. The 23-year-old Dominican allowed five runs and 10 hits at home versus Colorado on July 30 – an outing which concluded a month in which he went 2-1 with a 2.03 ERA. Martinez has split a pair of starts against the Pirates this season, including a 7 1/3-inning gem to get the win on July 9.

                          TRENDS:

*Cardinals are 6-1 in their last 7 games vs. a left-handed starter.
*Cardinals are 12-2 in Martinezs last 14 home starts.
*Over is 4-0 in Pirates last 4 overall.
*Pirates are 5-1 in the last 6 meetings.

The Oakland Athletics have dropped five straight games behind Kendall Graveman.

Graveman is slated to get the ball Tuesday when Oakland begins a three-game series in Toronto. Drew Hutchison is the probable starter for the Blue Jays.

Rest days have led to losses for Tribe

Having an extra day of rest hasn't been profitable for backers of the Cleveland Indians as of late, as the club is 0-5 in its last five following an off day.

The Tribe are in that spot once again Tuesday versus Luis Severino and the New York Yankees. Cleveland is scheduled to start Carlos Carrasco.

The Indians are presently -115 on the moneyline at Pinnacle Sports.

Over is red-hot when Braves face righties

The Over is 7-0 in the Atlanta Braves' last seven games when facing right-handed pitching.

Atlanta is set to invade Tropicana Field Tuesday to kick off a brief two-game series versus the Tampa Bay Rays. Righties Williams Perez and Erasmo Ramirez are scheduled to start for the Braves and Rays, respectively.

As of this writing, the total for the game is at 7.0.
