Preview: Phillies (44-67) at Padres (52-59)
    Game: 3
    Venue: PETCO Park
    Date: August 09, 2015 4:10 PM EDT

Sweeping a series at Petco Park is nothing new for the Philadelphia Phillies.

Neither is seeing them play well anymore.

The Phillies have baseball's best record since the All-Star break and can complete their sixth sweep at the 12-year-old ballpark by handing the San Diego Padres a season high-tying sixth straight defeat Sunday.

Philadelphia (44-67) improved to 15-5 since the break with Saturday's 4-2 victory. The top three hitters in the lineup - Chase Utley, Cesar Hernandez and Odubel Herrera - were 6 for 12 with all four runs and all three RBIs.

'It's fun to watch these guys,' interim manager Pete Mackanin said. 'They are having a good time playing aggressive and they are pulling for each other. It is contagious.'

Hernandez is hitting .400 in his last eight starts and will likely move back to second base Sunday since Utley, who is 3 for 9 in his first series since June 22 after being out due to right ankle inflammation, will likely rest.

Philadelphia is 29-10 at Petco for the best record among visiting teams. It posted sweeps there in its first two visits in 2004 and 2005 along with ones in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

The Phillies are enjoying renewed confidence after moving out of sole possession of the NL East cellar for the first time since May 27, though it may be hard to be optimistic Sunday since Jerome Williams (3-8, 6.09 ERA) will start. He is 0-6 with an 8.02 ERA in nine road starts and 0-5 with a 7.17 ERA in his last nine overall.

One factor in Williams' favor is that he is 3-3 in seven outings versus San Diego with a 2.18 ERA for his best mark against any opponent. No Padres batter has more than one hit versus him, with Derek Norris and Melvin Upton Jr. each going 0 for 6.

The right-hander took a step in the right direction Tuesday by yielding one run in five innings in a 6-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in his third outing since being activated off the disabled list July 21.

San Diego (52-59) seeks to avoid matching a six-game slide from July 4-10. The Padres are batting .220 with 12 runs scored in their last five games and are hitting .217 with an average of 2.3 runs in their past eight at home.

That kind of production is something Sunday starter Andrew Cashner (4-11, 4.08) is accustomed to since he owns one of baseball's worst run support averages at 3.02.

Cashner, however, has won both starts against Philadelphia and has a 1.25 ERA in eight total appearances for his lowest mark against an opponent he has faced multiple times. He has held Freddy Galvis hitless in seven at-bats.

The right-hander has allowed three runs over 14 innings in winning consecutive home outings after the Padres dropped his first six Petco starts. He yielded two runs in six innings in Tuesday's 4-1 defeat at Milwaukee.

"Cash was good," interim manager Pat Murphy said. "He pitched well enough to win."

San Diego's Yangervis Solarte is hitting .388 with seven RBIs and eight runs scored in his last 11 games.

Teammate Will Venable has been reinstated off the paternity list and could return to the lineup Sunday.

Preview: Reds (49-59) at Diamondbacks (53-56)
      Game: 3
      Venue: Chase Field
      Date: August 09, 2015 4:10 PM EDT

As Patrick Corbin continues to find his form following Tommy John surgery, the Arizona Diamondbacks plan to remain cautious with someone they expect to be a key part of their future.

The left-hander hopes to have a more efficient outing than his last when he takes the mound in Sunday's decisive finale against the visiting Cincinnati Reds.

Corbin (2-3, 3.99 ERA) allowed three runs, six hits and walked two while throwing 54 pitches in only 1 1-3 innings before manager Chip Hale took him out of a 5-4 loss at Washington on Tuesday.

'We're always going to err on the conservative side with him,' Hale said. 'We almost didn't let him go out for the second."

Corbin completed at least five innings in each of his first five starts - and yielded two or fewer runs in four of them - since returning July 4 from elbow surgery.

"We have to be very careful - we want to get through 2015 healthy,' Hale said. 'He's going to be our guy in '16, we know that. In '15, he's already proven in his six starts that he deserves to be that guy.'

A 14-game winner in 2013 who missed all last season, the 26-year-old Corbin understands the point of view of the Diamondbacks (53-56) as an organization.

"I know I'm going to be on a tight limit if I get into some trouble," he told MLB's official website.

Corbin is 1-1 with a 2.28 ERA in three starts against Cincinnati (49-59), which snapped a 30-inning scoreless drought to even this three-game set with Saturday's 4-1 victory. Brandon Phillips, Eugenio Suarez and Marlon Byrd each homered to help the Reds snap a three-game skid.

Though four Cincinnati players recorded two hits, All-Star third baseman Todd Frazier went hitless in four at-bats and is batting .104 with 16 strikeouts over the last 12 contests.

"It's just a matter of getting out of it quick," Frazier said. "Right now, it's a slow pace."

      He's 2 for 9 with a double against Corbin.

Making his first career appearance against the Diamondbacks, Anthony DeSclafani (7-7, 3.71) is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA in his last three starts. He yielded a two-run homer and struck out a career-high nine in six innings of Tuesday's 3-2 victory over St. Louis.

"He has good stuff and he trusts it," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "It's more attitude than anything. I don't think he has any fear.'

The right-hander won't face infielder Cliff Pennington, who was traded to Toronto for minor league shortstop Dawel Lugo prior to Saturday's contest. The deal came less than 24 hours after the Diamondbacks sent reliever Oliver Perez to Houston.

Despite sitting 8 1/2 games out of first in the NL West, eight back of the final wild-card spot and jettisoning a pair of veterans, the Diamondbacks aren't giving up.

"Our goal has not changed," Hale said. "We're going to sprint it to the finish and we're going to battle every night to win."

Paul Goldschmidt no longer leads the majors in batting after his average dropped to .332 while going 3 for 27 with 12 strikeouts in seven games this month.

'We always count on him to be that guy but it is not that easy to do all the time," Hale said. "They are pitching him pretty well."

Preview: Marlins (43-68) at Braves (51-60)
        Game: 4
        Venue: Turner Field
        Date: August 09, 2015 5:10 PM EDT

Despite continuing to pitch respectably, Shelby Miller hasn't earned a win since his near no-hitter against the Miami Marlins on May 17.

Miller will try to end his drought with another stellar performance against Miami and lead the Atlanta Braves to their first four-game sweep of the Marlins in nine years Sunday.

Since coming within one out of a no-hitter, Miller has gone 0-7 with a 3.14 ERA in 14 starts and received a combined 14 runs of support. He's gotten none in seven games.

The Braves matched their best support in that winless stretch Tuesday with three runs in his seven innings against San Francisco. Miller (5-8, 2.44 ERA allowed two runs but the Braves bullpen gave up six in an 8-3 loss, dropping the team to 2-12 in his last 14 starts.

"My job is to go out there and put zeros up whether I go five innings, seven innings, whether I have good games, bad games," Miller said.

Miller is the first to have a .385 winning percentage or lower and a sub-2.50 ERA in at least 20 starts since Joe Magrane went 5-9 (.357) with a 2.18 ERA in 24 starts for St. Louis in 1988.

Miller's losing streak is the longest by a Braves pitcher since Kenshin Kawakami dropped 11 in a row from 2009-10. The last Atlanta starter to go 15-plus games without a win was Jo-Jo Reyes with an 18-game streak from 2008-09.

A matchup with Miami could end his streak as he's 2-0 with a 0.47 ERA in three starts this season. The Marlins (43-68) have dropped 13 of 15, including six in a row, and 21 of 26 on the road.

The Braves are 10-2 against Miami this season and have won the last six following a 7-2 victory Saturday. Nick Swisher helped seal the victory with a two-run double in his Atlanta debut and first game since going on the disabled list for left knee inflammation June 14.

Nick Markakis went 3 for 5 to extend his NL-best hit streak to 15 games, and A.J. Pierzynski now has a 13-game streak after going 2 for 4.

The two will try to extend those runs while leading Atlanta to its first four-game sweep of the Marlins since May 15-18, 2006. The Braves dropped 18 of 24 before this series.

They'll face Brad Hand (1-2, 4.71) in his second game since returning to the rotation. The left-hander pitched four scoreless innings Tuesday in a 5-1 loss to the New York Mets.

"I just come here every day with a positive attitude, and whatever they decide is totally up to them," Hand told MLB's official website. "I've just got to be ready to pitch."

Hand, 1-1 with a 4.60 ERA in four starts this season, took a 4-0 win in his most recent start against Atlanta on Sept. 7, throwing six innings. He was 0-3 with a 6.06 ERA in his previous three starts versus the Braves.

Markakis and Pierzynski are hitless in a combined four at-bats against Hand, all this season.

          Giants-Cubs Preview

(AP) -- As focused as the Chicago Cubs have been during a meaningful week of baseball, they haven't forgot to enjoy themselves.

The surging Cubs can continue the fun by completing a four-game sweep of the visiting San Francisco Giants on Sunday.

After splitting a rain-shortened two-game road set against NL wild card-leader Pittsburgh, Chicago (61-48) is in position to sweep a home series of least three games from San Francisco for the first time since May 1994, and first four-gamer over the Giants there since June 1977. Kris Bryant homered and had three RBIs and fellow rookie Addison Russell recorded three hits as the Cubs moved 2 1/2 games ahead of the reigning World Series champs for the second wild-card spot with Saturday's 8-6 victory.

The Cubs, who were 49-65 at this time last season, have won nine of the last 10 and are 13 games over .500 for the first time since finishing 97-64 in 2008. They've averaged 6.0 runs while batting .308 against the Pirates and Giants (59-51) this week.

"We're just rolling with it, having a lot of fun," said Bryant, who is batting .316 in his last six games after going 0 for 13 in his previous five.

Chicago's rookie foursome of Bryant, Russell, Kyle Schwarber and Jorge Soler have batted a combined .419 and drove in 14 of its 20 runs in this series.

"We have a lot of confidence," Bryant said.

The Cubs look to stay hot behind Jake Arrieta (12-6, 2.50 ERA), who is 6-1 with a 1.37 ERA in his last nine starts. Despite walking three for a fourth straight outing, the right-hander allowed two hits in seven innings of Tuesday's 5-0 victory over the Pirates.

"He's an interesting pitcher," Chicago manager Joe Maddon said. "I will say it again, he's not there yet. He's still learning how to utilize all his weapons. There's another level of Arrieta."

That might not bode well for the Giants even though they scored four runs and recorded seven hits off Arrieta in six innings of a 4-0 victory over Chicago last season.

San Francisco is 3-6 on a 10-game trip but has won the last four starts by Jake Peavy (2-4, 3.77). The right-hander has gone 2-0 with a 2.96 ERA in those games, and yielded one run over 12 innings in the last two.

"Certainly I expect to make a difference and expect to win on my day," Peavy said after he gave up that run and struck out eight in six innings while not factoring in the decision of Tuesday's 8-3 win at Atlanta. "We've done that the four times out of the (All-Star) break and I am extremely excited about that."

He's 8-5 with a 2.76 ERA in 16 starts against the Cubs, and has won three of his last four at Wrigley Field. Peavy hopes to continue that success and break the current trend set by Giants starters, who have a 9.75 ERA while failing to complete five innings in this series.

"They're having a tough time getting us deep in the game," manager Bruce Bochy said. "But we've got another tough game facing a tough pitcher and we've got to come out here ready to go and put these behind us. We've got no way to look at it but move on, focus forward and keep pushing."

Chris Coghlan is 3 for 7 in the last two games, and 4 for 10 against Peavy.

San Francisco's Brandon Belt has homered twice in the series for his only hits in 19 at-bats over the last five games. Brandon Crawford has four RBIs in the set, and is batting .349 in 15 games at Wrigley.

The Giants have won seven of their last nine games at Wrigley Field, while punching out double-digit hits in each of their last four road games against the Cubs.

The Giants, who have recorded at least six runs and 10 hits in three straight games for the second time this season (also May 15-17), have not done so in four straight games since June 2009.

While the Cubs have won six of their last seven games, they have scored more than three runs in just two of their last nine home games.

Giants rookie Chris Heston, who has gone undefeated (5-0) over his last eight starts, has not allowed a single home run over his last 12 starts.

Jake Arrieta has made nine consecutive quality starts for the Cubs. Over this stretch, Arrieta has recorded an ERA of just 1.37 while allowing just one home run.

Over his last seven games, Anthony Rizzo is batting .481 (13/27) with five home runs, 12 RBI, eight runs scored, and an OPS of 1.631.

            Orioles-Angels Preview

(AP) -- If the Los Angeles Angels aren't going to be led out of this slump by the offense, their pitching staff could sure use a shot in the arm

They're hoping Jered Weaver can provide that in his first start in seven weeks Sunday against the visiting Baltimore Orioles.

Los Angeles (58-51) has averaged 3.5 runs during a 4-11 stretch - to go from leading the AL West by two games to 1 1/2 games back of first-place Houston - batting .191 in the last nine. Saturday's 5-0 loss marked the fourth time the Angels have been shut out in the last 15. They were blanked five times in their previous 94 contests.

The starting rotation has also been lackluster with a 4.67 ERA over the last 15, almost a full run higher than its season mark.

Weaver (4-8, 4.75 ERA) hasn't thrown since June 20 because of an inflamed left hip. He made two rehab starts with Class-A Inland Empire, allowing two earned runs over 9 1-3 innings.

"If it means he's good from now until the end of the year, then it was well worth the price you had to pay to miss him," manager Mike Scioscia told MLB's official website. "I don't necessarily think that the fact that a guy misses three or four weeks is going to translate to him staying fresher, but he's at a level now that he needs to be, and we need to maintain that."

Given the way Weaver has struggled this year, it's unclear exactly how much of a boost he can provide. His ERA is the highest of his career, and in 15 starts, he's four shy of his career high for losses set over 34 outings in 2010. He almost certainly won't meet the 11-win plateau he reached each of his first nine seasons.

Weaver lost each of his last four starts before being sidelined, tying the longest slump of his career Aug. 17-Sept. 4, 2010. He's only been backed by four runs of support in that span, though he also owns a 6.58 ERA while giving up six homers.

Facing the Orioles could help Weaver get back on track if his history against them holds true. He's 6-2 with a 2.83 ERA in his last nine meetings and held Baltimore to a solo shot by J.J. Hardy and two other hits over 7 1-3 innings in a 3-1 road victory May 15.

Chris Davis, who owns a 1.181 OPS with 26 RBIs over his last 19 games, is batting .189 with eight strikeouts in 37 at-bats against the right-hander.

Baltimore (56-53) has won 10 of 14 to pull within two games of the Angels for the second wild-card spot and Manny Machado and Caleb Joseph went deep Saturday, the eighth time in 11 games the Orioles have homered twice. Machado is hitting .412 over his last eight games.

Miguel Gonzalez (9-8, 4.32), trying to avoid losing a third straight start for the first time in his career, has seen his season go south with a 4-4 record and 6.05 ERA over his last eight outings. Opponents own a .383 on-base percentage in that span compared to .290 previously.

He allowed three runs, five hits and three walks and needed 94 pitches to get through 5 1-3 innings in a 5-0 loss at Oakland on Tuesday.

"I have to stay aggressive and try and throw strikes as quick as possible so my defense can be on its toes," he said.

The right-hander has completed at least seven innings in three of his four previous matchups with the Angels, going 3-1 with a 2.20 ERA.

The Angels took two of three games from the Orioles in a May series, the first time they won a series over Baltimore since 2012. From 2013 to 2014, the Orioles were 9-4 against the Angels.

Baltimore is coming off a series win at Oakland and has now has won back-to-back road series. The Orioles have yet to win three straight road series in 2015 (last occurrence was in 2014).

The Angels picked up their first win of the season when trailing after eight innings on Wednesday against Cleveland. It was also their eighth walkoff win of the year, tied with the White Sox for most in the American League.

Over the past two seasons (2014-2015), the Angels (155-114) and Orioles (151-118) have the best and third-best record in the American League, respectively.

In 19 career games at Angel Stadium, Matt Wieters is batting .355 (22-for-62) with four home runs and 13 RBI. Wieters has the highest batting average of any Orioles player ever at Angel Stadium (minimum 50 at-bats).

In 22 games since the Fourth of July, C.J. Cron is batting .366 (26-for-71) with four home runs, 13 RBI, and an OPS of 1.030. In 39 games prior to the holiday, Cron was batting .198 (24-for-121) with two home runs, eight RBI, and an OPS of .509.

Notes Applicable For Series Dates: 8/7/2015 thru 8/9/2015

              Dodgers-Pirates Preview

(AP) -- The Pittsburgh Pirates' series with the Los Angeles Dodgers is just the beginning to a nine-game stretch that looks like the sternest test of their playoff hopes.

The Pirates are off to a promising start with a pair of one-run wins and will try to add to that in emphatic fashion with their first three-game sweep of the Dodgers in 15 years Sunday night.

Pittsburgh is playing three consecutive three-game series against NL division leaders with the next two - against St. Louis and the New York Mets - on the road. The Pirates (64-44) haven't squandered the opportunity to play the Dodgers at home, winning 5-4 in 10 innings Friday before Saturday's 6-5 victory.

Starting pitcher Francisco Liriano hit a three-run homer in the latest win, and Neil Walker added a solo shot as Pittsburgh held on for its 14th win in 17 home games. The Pirates have also taken 10 of 14 overall while moving six games up on a playoff berth and staying 3 1/2 ahead of the Chicago Cubs for the top spot in the wild-card race.

Pittsburgh will next seek its first three-game sweep of Los Angeles (62-48) since Sept. 4-6, 2000, at Dodger Stadium. The Pirates haven't swept three home games from the Dodgers since May 31-June 2, 1999, but will enter this attempt having won seven of nine overall against them since the beginning of last season.

Los Angeles had won six of seven before this series with four wins at home and two against one of the NL's worst teams, Philadelphia. The Dodgers have lost five of seven on the road.

Charlie Morton (7-4, 4.19 ERA) will try to complete the sweep while building on his first win in six starts, a 3-0 victory in Cincinnati last Sunday. The right-hander struck out a season-high seven and walked none in seven innings after going 0-3 with a 5.04 ERA in his previous five outings.

"He had his best delivery today. He repeated his delivery all day long. It was a very solid effort," manager Clint Hurdle said.

While Morton will face the Dodgers for the first time since 2010, Alex Wood (7-7, 3.65) opposes the Pirates for the third time this year. He is 1-1 with a 2.19 ERA in those two starts and tossed 7 1-3 scoreless while fanning eight in a 2-1 victory at PNC Park in his latest June 28.

Wood is 1-0 with a 1.26 ERA in two lifetime starts in Pittsburgh.

The left-hander was a 6-2 loser at Philadelphia on Tuesday in his Dodgers debut, giving up four runs in 6 1-3 innings. He was charged with three after he exited when Joel Peralta gave up a grand slam to Maikel Franco.

"He didn't deserve to be the guy with an L on his back after that," manager Don Mattingly told MLB's official website. "You want him to come out of there with a good experience his first time. It should be more on us."

Wood, acquired from Atlanta on July 30, had a 2.61 ERA in his previous 19 road starts dating back to July 30, 2014.

Andrew McCutchen, batting .448 with nine RBIs and 10 runs in his last nine games, is 1 for 6 against him this season.

Jimmy Rollins, hitting .333 in his last 14 contests, is 7 for 11 with two doubles lifetime against Morton.

The Dodgers have gone 69-31 in 100 games against the Pirates since 2001 -- the best record by any team against another (minimum 50 games) over that span. However, Pittsburgh won the season series 5-2 against the Dodgers last season, snapping a streak of 13 straight season series wins for Los Angeles.

The Pirates have gone 20-27 against teams from their own division this season, but their 42-17 record outside their division is the best in the majors since the 2001 Mariners went 76-28 outside of the AL West.

The Dodgers, who have punched out double-digit hits in three straight games for the second time this season (also July 18-20), have not done so in four straight games since September 18-21, 2014.

Joc Pederson singled in the seventh yesterday to snap an 0-for-23 streak, the longest hitless streak by a Dodger rookie since Oscar Robles in 2005 (0-for-26).

Gerrit Cole's current ERA of 2.29 is the lowest by a Pirates pitcher through his first 21 starts of a season since 1985, when Rick Reuschel had a 2.23 ERA over his first 21 starts.

Clayton Kershaw has 45 strikeouts and one walk over his last four starts -- making him the only pitcher in the last 100 years with 45+ strikeouts and one walk or fewer over a four-start span.

Notes Applicable For Series Dates: 8/7/2015 thru 8/9/2015

Lackey dominating the Brewers this season

John Lackey has taken to the mound against the Milwaukee Brewers twice this season, with the veteran dominating the Brew Crew. Lackey is 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA with the Brewers hitting .259 this season.

Lackey has not pitched as well on the road this season however, with a 1.89 ERA at Busch Stadium and a 4.36 everywhere else. Despite also pitching one less game on the road, Lackey has given up twice as many earned runs compared to his home starts.

The St. Louis Cardinals will send Lackey to the mound Sunday.

Preview: Mercury (14-7) at Sky (13-9)

                          Date: August 09, 2015 2:00 PM EDT

A rematch of last year's WNBA Finals late last month lived up to its billing, kickstarting the Phoenix Mercury's winning streak and beginning a bit of a rough stretch for the Chicago Sky.

They'll meet again Sunday as visiting Phoenix looks to win a seventh straight matchup.

The Mercury (14-7) tied the franchise's largest comeback by rallying from 19 down to beat the Sky 89-87 in overtime July 28. DeWanna Bonner scored eight of her season-high 34 points in the extra session, helping overcome 32 from Chicago star Elena Delle Donne.

Phoenix also has won the following four games, including a 73-66 victory over Minnesota on Friday to pull within one game of the Western Conference-leading Lynx.

The Mercury had to rally from double-digit deficits in three of their previous four.

"I think (improving our defense) is what we have been doing since we came back from All Star break," Bonner said. "Even though we had those comeback wins in the second half, I think we've buckled down on defense when we needed to."

Bonner, who set the single-season record of 59 consecutive made free throws before it was snapped in the third quarter, finished with 15 points while Brittney Griner added 13 and 12 boards. Coach Sandy Brondello was most impressed with Marta Xargay Casademont's performance, though.

The rookie scored all of her career-high 15 points in the second half, hitting 6 of 7 from the field - including all three 3-point attempts. She missed the previous four games with an injury.

"It was her night. It was a great game (after) having to be out for two weeks," Brondello said. "She was a little fatigued near the end, but she fought. She is a great addition to our team. I look forward to having her healthy and getting some better chemistry after all the plays down the stretch."

Casademont missed last month's meeting with the Sky (13-9), the teams' first since Phoenix's three-game sweep in last year's WNBA Finals.

That began a 2-3 stretch for Chicago, which is coming off a 77-63 home loss to New York on Friday. The Sky lead the league in scoring at 84.6 points per game but were held to their fewest of the season while shooting just 29.9 percent.

Second-leading scorer Cappie Pondexter (15.5 points per game) was held to 12 on 2 of 13 shooting.

Delle Donne is averaging 4.2 fewer than her league-high 24.0 points per game over the last four. Chicago is tied with Washington at two games back of the East-leading Liberty.

Griner had five blocks in the first meeting with the Sky and is averaging 5.6 during Phoenix's winning streak. Her six blocks Friday gave her 274 for her career, surpassing Diana Taurasi's franchise record in 258 fewer games.

Preview: Sun (11-9) at Mystics (12-8)

                            Date: August 09, 2015 4:00 PM EDT

The Connecticut Sun cleared one hurdle Friday and hope to lunge a step closer to another with Sunday's second game of a home-and-home set against the Washington Mystics.

Friday's 86-72 victory at Mohegan Sun Arena helped the Sun snap a seven-game winless streak against the Eastern Conference, and it mushed four teams within one game of each other in the Eastern Conference's Nos. 2-5 spots.

Sunday's matchup at the Verizon Center provides an opportunity for Connecticut (11-9) to pull into a tie for the East's fourth and final playoff spot with Washington (12-8). Indiana (12-9) and Chicago (13-9) are also in the mix.

Postseason thoughts seemed like wishful thinking during a six-game losing streak that lasted from June 30-July 19 and left the Sun at .500. But with three wins in four games, Connecticut can dream again.

Sun coach Anne Donovan became the WNBA's first female coach to win 200 games with Tuesday's 82-51 victory over San Antonio. Donovan - who joined Dan Hughes, Van Chancellor and current Mystics coach Mike Thibault in the 200-win club - described afterward how her team wiggled into position to make a late-season run.

"Clawing away. We're trying to scratch and claw our way to the postseason," Donovan told the team's official website. "We started as a good defensive team and surprised a lot of people with how good our chemistry was early with six new players. And I think we went into a little bit of a lull and we've got a learning curve.

"One thing that has been consistent is we have really fought. In almost every game it's been competitive for us, so not losing our confidence, I think, is the key in that lull that we had."

It helps to have All-Star guard Alex Bentley playing at a high level. Bentley poured in a career-high 31 points in Friday's win over Washington, bringing her scoring average to 15.1 - the highest of her three years in the league. Jasmine Thomas chipped in 15 points and eight assists for the Sun.

The Mystics never led Friday, but they have been much better at home. Washington is 7-3 at the Verizon Center and will go for its fifth straight win in the nation's capital.

"(We) try to get our fans behind us and make sure we keep winning at home and keep them coming to the games," center Stefanie Dolson said after a 66-63 win over San Antonio on Wednesday. "I think we've done that. I think we've played well at home."

Emma Meesseman was the only Washington player to score in double figures against the Sun, finishing with 15 points in the Mystics' second loss in three games after winning five straight.

Washington has won all five home meetings against Connecticut over the past three seasons, most recently riding Kara Lawson's season-high 24 points to an 89-82 victory July 19.

Preview: Dream (7-14) at Shock (10-12)

                              Date: August 09, 2015 4:30 PM EDT

The Tulsa Shock might have their best chance to stop their ongoing collapse their next time out.

That's because they'll host the Atlanta Dream in a matchup of the coldest teams in the WNBA on Sunday.

Tulsa (10-12) has lost eight straight, making its 8-1 start a distant memory. The Shock have dropped nine of 11 since star guard Skylar Diggins was lost for the season with a torn ACL on June 28.

Tulsa last lost nine in a row in a skid of that length to close the 2012 season.

The first seven defeats in the Shock's slide came by an average of 6.4 points, but they were pounded 84-57 by Los Angeles on Thursday. The loss was the team's second-worst of the season.

Tulsa is still in good position, sitting third in the Eastern Conference, but the Sparks have pulled within 2 1/2 games thanks to a four-game winning streak.

The Dream (7-14) appear to provide an excellent opportunity for the Shock to earn their first victory since July 11. Atlanta has lost six straight and eight of 10 and is coming off its most lopsided loss of the season, 106-77 at Indiana on Friday.

The Dream have also dropped their last five on the road by an average of 16 points, though the Shock have lost four straight at home.

Atlanta allowed the Fever to score a team-record 59 points in the second half, and the Dream committed 26 turnovers. Angel McCoughtry scored 23 points but the club shot 39.3 percent.

Plenette Pierson scored 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting and Riquna Williams added 23 to help the Shock win 85-75 at Atlanta on July 7. McCoughtry scored 25 but went 8-of-28 from the field.

Atlanta rookie forward Cierra Burdick underwent surgery on Wednesday to repair a stress fracture in her left foot. Burdick averaged 4.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 11 games - four starts.

Preview: Sparks (7-14) at Lynx (15-6)

                                Date: August 09, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

The Minnesota Lynx experienced earlier this week how dangerous the Los Angeles Sparks have become now that Candace Parker has found her groove.

Visiting Los Angeles looks to win a fifth straight game while dealing Minnesota a third consecutive defeat Sunday night.

The Sparks (7-14) dropped 13 of 16 without Parker, who sat out to rest after playing overseas during the WNBA offseason. She returned July 29 and finished with 12 points and nine assists in 35 minutes, but the Lynx (15-6) won 82-76 behind 27 points from Maya Moore.

Los Angeles hasn't lost since, winning four straight with Parker averaging 19.0 points, 11.3 rebounds and 5.0 assists. She had 18 points and 13 boards as the Sparks earned some revenge with an 83-61 rout of Minnesota on Tuesday.

Parker's 10 points and 12 rebounds Thursday complemented 26 points from Nneka Ogwumike in an 84-57 win over Tulsa. The Sparks' surge with Parker has moved them into the fourth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference, making this a possible postseason preview with the first-place Lynx.

Los Angeles hasn't won five straight since a six-game run in 2013.

"I think it's just kind of to come in and lock down defensively," Parker said. "I think we're playing some of the best team defense in a long time, and that's allowing us to come out in transition, and that's key for us. If we can do that, we're capable of playing in the half court and capable of limiting teams and we'll be a force to reckon with."

That defense shut down Moore in the last meeting, forcing her into a 5-of-14, 13-point performance. It ended her team-record 11-game streak of scoring at least 20.

She failed to reach that mark again Friday, finishing with 17 as the Lynx fell 73-66 to Phoenix. Sylvia Fowles was the only teammate in double figures with 11 points for Minnesota, which had its West lead trimmed to one game on the Mercury while dropping back-to-back contests for the first time this season.

Moore, second in the league at 20.4 points per game, was held scoreless for 37-plus minutes spanning two games before she hit a layup with 8:06 left in the second quarter Friday.

"We just couldn't come up with (big) plays," coach Cheryl Reeve said.

Minnesota, second in the league with 77.3 points a contest, has been held to fewer than 70 in two straight for the second time this season. It hasn't scored less than that total in three in a row since Aug. 8-13, 2006.

The Lynx have won the last three home meetings and are 8-2 at Target Center this season. Los Angeles is 2-8 on the road.
