    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Kelvin Benjamin was targeted 142 times LY, the most targets any rookie WR has had since 2007.

-- Eagles allowed 81 plays of 20+ yards LY, most in the NFL.

-- Cleveland Browns have been 1-0 once in the last sixteen years.

-- Why on God's green earth didn't the Red Sox pay Jon Lester?

-- Phillies 6, LA 2-- Phillies won 13 of their last 16 games.

-- A "quality start" should be seven innings and three runs, not six innings.

    **********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Pet peeves and other stuff........

    13) Pet Peeve #1: I have Marcell Ozuna on my fantasy team and I'm hurting for good outfielders, since I also have Giancarlo Stnaton, who is hurt. Marlins sent Ozuna down to the minors July 5 and he is hitting .325 or so in AAA. Time to bring him back.

But no; Ozuna's agent is Scott Boras, who claims Miami is waiting until August 8 to bring him back, which will cost him a year on his arbitration clock, or something like that. As usual, the Marlins could care less about winning. They have that nice new stadium but they get their butts kicked year after year, so no one goes anyway.

    12) Honesty in broadcasting: You don't get this much on local TV; when the Mets pulled ahead in the 8th inning last night, Marlins TV analyst Tommy Hutton blurted out "75% of the fans here are rooting for the Mets!!!" He didn't sound happy.

    11) Pet Peeve #2: Utah Jazz got better last year, going 38-44, winning 13 more games than the year before, but yesterday, word came out that Dante Exum, who started half the Jazz' games LY and played 22 minutes a game, tore his ACL while playing in an international tournament for Australia. Awesome.

NBA teams pay their players millions of dollars, but are held hostage by these stupid summer tournamets-- the Pacers lost Paul George LY after he got hurt in a similar game at UNLV, which crippled Indiana's season. Do Utah fans get a rebate now? Exum isn't the player George was, but it hurts and now the Jazz will suffer for it.

    10) If James Harden signs that $200M, 13-year deal with adidas, who would he be more loyal to, adidas or the Rockets? Houston paid him $14,728,844 LY; adidas will be playing him $15,384,615 a year. Playing in the summer gives the sneaker company lot more exposure and thats what they're looking for.

    9) Pet Peeve #3-- This one made me smile, because it helped the A's. Smart people doing stupid things. A's led Baltimore 2-0, bottom of 6th, they've got a guy on 2nd and Eric Sogard is up, with Marcus Semien on deck. Buck Showalter is one of the best managers in baseball, the Orioles are so lucky to have im, but he walks Sogard to pitch to Semien. Let me repeat that-- he walked Eric Sogard on purpose. Thanks!!!!

Now Semien is no ARod, but he is a much better hitter than Sogard and he drilled a three-run homer that basically ended last night's Oakland win. Numbers are nice, but common sense is nicer. You never walk Eric Sogard on purpose, unless a pitcher is the next hitter. This was the case of a smart person making a dumb move.

    Elsewhere in the world yesterday.........
    8) Dave Dombrowski is out as GM of the Tigers, despite Detroit winning its division the last four years. His phone probably blew up about five minutes after word got out-- he will not be out of work very long, unless he wants to be.

This is very bad news for manager Brad Ausmus; GM's usually like to bring their own guys in to manage, especially when the uincumbent has been struggling.

    7) Dan Haren is making $10M this year; he tried to dissuade a trade to Miami last winter because he wanted to stay on the west coast, but now he is on the Cubs and in a pennant race. He makes his first Cub start against the Prates tonight.

    6) "He looks like a lamp post with ears." Arizona Cardinal analyst Ron Wolfley describing a rookie on the Cardinals, who apparently is very thin.

    5) If you care about such things, a guy on NFL Network yesterday was touting Detroit RB Ameer Abdullah as a fantasy sleeper.

    4) RB Arien Foster hurt his leg, is out indefinitely, tough blow for Houston.

    3) Padres-Brewers played in Milwaukee this week; Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell played for Padres manager Pat Murphy in college at Notre Dame.

    2) Check out this video of Northwestern State basketball player Jalan West playing HORSE with the school president, in the president's driveway.

    1) Has to be a long summer for announcers of bad teams; they can't rip the home team, even if they deserve it and they have to come up with positive stuff to keep the viewers tuned in. Its not always easy.

Oakland broadcasts this month have featured a guy who catches foul balls in stands behind home plate, then gives them to little kids sitting near him, as well as a muskrat who was watching the game while sitting atop the rightfield fence. Seriously.

Miami announcers read texts/e-mails almost the whole game on Tuesdays; until they get Ozuna and Stanton back, it might be more entertaining than the actual games.

Game of the Day: Astros at Rangers
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Houston Astros at Texas Rangers (+134, 9.5)

It appears first-place Houston made a solid move in acquiring Scott Kazmir prior to the trade deadline, and the Astros hope the investment continues to pay dividends when they visit the Texas Rangers on Wednesday for the finale of their three-game series. Kazmir, the American League Pitcher of the Month for July whose 0.26 ERA during that period was the third-lowest in the month's history, has yet to allow a run in two starts since joining his hometown team and has dominated Texas.

“He was great coming out of the draft. He had a really good start to his career. He traveled different roads to get to where he is today,'' Astros manager A.J. Hinch told the Houston Chronicle about Kazmir, who was 2-0 in five starts with the Astros and Oakland in July. "Now he’s in the thick of the pennant race pitching for a team that acquired him at the deadline to be a force in his hometown. The story continues to get better. We hope to add another chapter in the rest of the year.” Kazmir on Wednesday must play the role of stopper as the Rangers made it two straight over Houston with a 4-3 victory Tuesday to climb within two games of Toronto for the final wild-card spot and six of the first-place Astros in the AL West. Nick Martinez takes the ball on his 25th birthday Wednesday after snapping a six-start winless streak (0-4) in his last turn for Texas, which has won three straight and five of six while already extending their unbeaten series string to five (4-0-1).

            TV:
8:05 p.m. ET, ROOT (Houston), FSN Southwest (Texas)

            LINE HISTORY:
The Rangers have held steady at their opening number of +134. The total has also stayed put at 9.5 runs.

            INJURY REPORT:

Astros - RF G. Springer (Mid Aug, wrist), SP B. Peacock (60-day DL, abdominal).

            Rangers - RP T. Scheppers (15-day DL, knee), C R. Chirinos (15-day Dl, shoulder), C C. Corporan (15-day DL, thumb), 1B K. Blanks (15-day DL, Achillies), SP N. Tepesch (60-day DL, elbow), SP D. Holland (60-day DL, shoulder), RF A. Richardson (60-day DL, back), 2B J. Profar (60-day DL, elbow).

            WEATHER REPORT:
There should be a moderate pitchers wind gusting in from right field at 10 miles per hour. Otherwise, expect clear skies and temperatures in the high 90's at game time.

            UMPIRE REPORT:
The MLB's best home team ump, Jim Reynolds, will be calling strikes for this game. The home team is 17-4 in the 21 games he has been behind home plate. The over is 17-12-2 in Reynolds' games and he also has a strike rate of 63.23 percent.

            PITCHING MATCHUP:
Astros LH Scott Kazmir (6-5, 2.10 ERA) vs. Rangers RH Nick Martinez (6-6, 4.01)

Kazmir immediately got a taste of the pennant race when he received a no-decision after allowing three hits and three walks while striking out five in 7 2/3 innings of a 3-0 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday. That performance - his first in an Astros uniform at Minute Maid Park - followed up a 4-0 victory at Kansas City on July 24, when he permitted three hits in seven frames. The 31-year-old is 11-5 with a 2.98 ERA in 21 starts versus Texas, including 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA in three turns this season while with Oakland, and has little trouble with Prince Fielder (2-for-16), who is second in the AL in batting with a .329 average.

Martinez yielded two runs in 6 1/3 innings of a 6-3 victory over San Francisco on Friday. The Florida native gave up 27 runs in 34 2/3 frames over his previous six starts, with the last five turns during that stretch coming on the road. Martinez is 2-1 with a 1.80 ERA in five games (three starts) versus Houston - all last season.

            TRENDS:

            * Astros are 1-8 in their last nine road games versus a right-handed starter.
            * Rangers are 5-0 in their last five games as an underdog.
            * Under is 9-1-1 in the Astros last 11 road games.
            * Over is 9-1-1 in the Rangers last 11 games versus a left-handed starter.

            CONSENSUS:
The public is backing Houston in this AL West showdown, with 63.98 percent of wagers taking the favored Astros.

Pitchers wind at U.S. Cellular Field Wednesday

The pitchers for today's contest between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Chicago White Sox could be given a hand by the wind Wednesday at U.S. Cellular Field Wednesday.

There will be a 10 mile per hour wind gusting in from left field during the game, otherwise, the weather is expected to be clear with temperatures in the high 70's.

The pitchers benefiting from the wind are the Rays' Erasmo Ramirez (3.61 ERA, 5-9 O/U) and the White Sox's Carlos Rodon (4.84 ERA, 8-6 O/U). The total currently sits at 8.0.

              White Sox slumping at home

The Chicago White Sox are in a slump at U.S. Cellular Field, going 1-8 in their last nine games there.

The Pale Hose problem during the slump has been pitching, allowing a whopping 7.22 runs per game in those nine games, while scoring just 4.22 runs themselves.

They try to break out of the slump Wednesday afternoon against the visting Tampa Bay Rays.

The White Sox, currently -121 faves, send left-hander Carlos Rondon (4-4, 4.84 ERA) to the mound to take on the Rays right-hander Erasmo Ramirez (8-4, 3.61 ERA).

                  Wednesday, August 5

The under is hot when Orioles' Chen faces AL West

The under is a very good 18-3 in the last 21 games Baltimore's Wei-Yin Chen has started against American League West opponents.

Under backers hope the streak continues Wednesday when the Orioles visit the Oakland Athletics in the finale of their three-game series.

Chen (3.24 ERA, 4-14 O/U) goes up against A's right-hander Kendall Graveman (3.84 ERA, 7-9 O/U), where the total currently sits at 7.0 runs.

Mariners' Walker looks to stay hot on the road

The Seattle Mariners are hoping young right-hander Taijuan Walker can keep up his absurd hot-streak when pitching on the road Wednesday in Colorado against the Rockies.

The Mariners are 6-0 in Walker's last six road starts, where he has pitched to a 2.07 ERA while punching out 40 batters and giving up just three walks in 39.1 innings of work.

Seattle and Walker are currently -126 road favorites going up against Rockies southpaw Chris Rusin (3-4, 4.61 ERA).

Something's got to give in Indians-Angels matchup

Both the Los Angeles Angels and the Cleveland Indians are struggling in certain ways entering Wednesday's matchup, with the Indians struggling against left-handers, while the Angels are just plain struggling.

The Indians are 2-10 in their last 12 games against a left-handed starter and go up against Angels southpaw Hector Santiago (7-5, 2.70 ERA), who are just 2-10 in their last 12 overall.

The Angels are currently -118 home favorites for today's contest against the Tribe, who counter with right-hander Danny Salazar (9-6, 3.47 ERA).

Jungmann has become a top tier under pitcher

In Taylor Jungmann's past seven starts, the over/under has gone 1-5-1 thanks to his excellent pitching. Those seven appearances have seen the rightie allow a mere 1.3 runs allowed per game.

Jungmann is now the eighth best under pitcher in baseball, with a minimum of five starts on the season, with a 2-7 O/U mark.

The Brew Crew host the Padres Wednesday with the total currently listed at 7.5.

Kazmir coming off historically good July

Scott Kazmir pitched like a man possessed in July, which lead to his teams going 4-1 with an over/under of 1-4.

Kazmir posted a ridiculous 0.26 ERA while allowing opponents to bat .134 over his five starts last month. Those five starts saw the leftie surrender one earned run.

The Astros are currently -156 with a total of 9.5 when they visit the Texas Rangers Wednesday.

Hitters wind, chance of thunderstorms at Yankee Stadium

Weather could have an affect on your bets for tonight's clash between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

There will be a hitters wind of about 10 miles per hour blowing out to the short porch in right field. There will also be a chance of thunderstorms in the area, with a 20 percent chance of rain that should dissipate throughout the evening.

The Yankees, currently -193 favorites, send Luis Severino to the mound to make his first career start against the Red Sox's Stephen Wright. Then total is currently at 9.0.

Cardinals continue to be the best under team

In their past 13 contests, the St. Louis Cardinals have a 2-10-1 over/under record. The Cards have plated an average of 3.2 runs per game while allowing 2.7 in their past 13.

St. Louis is easily the top under in the MLB with a 39-63-4 O/U, which means they have six more unders than any other team in baseball.

Currently, the total when the Cards visit the Reds is 7.5.

Cueto stronger when the sun goes down this season

Johnny Cueto has been pitching ever been this season when he gets a full day to prepare. In 11 night games this season, Cueto has posted a 2.44 ERA while batters are hitting a mere .184.

Cueto allowed seven hits and three earned runs over seven innings in his first start with the Kansas City Royals.

The Royals are currently -160 when they visit the Detroit Tigers Wednesday.

Yankees top prospect Severino a huge favorite in debut

The New York Yankees top pitching prospect Luis Severino is facing a bit of pressure as he makes his major league debut at Yankee Stadium Wednesday night.

Talk about hitting the ground running. Not only does he have to go up against the Bronx Bombers biggest rivals in the Boston Red Sox, (despite how poorly they've played), but he is going in as a huge -193 favorite according to some books.

Severino has been fantastic at AAA Scranton this season, going 7-0 in 11 starts, pitching to a 1.91 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP, with 50 strikeouts to 17 walks.

He goes up against Boston's Steven Wright, who is 4-4 in seven starts, with a 4.53 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP.
