    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

College programs with most football players drafted the last six years.......

    6) Georgia (33) -- 22 of them were picked in 4th round or later.

    5) Oklahoma (34)-- 23 of them were taken in 4th round or later.

    4) Florida (35)-- 18 of them were taken in rounds 1-3, nine in 1st round.

    T2) LSU (39)-- 18 of the 39 were taken in rounds 2-3.
T2) Florida State (39)-- 21 of them were taken in round 4 or later.

    1) Alabama (44)-- 16 of them were taken in first round.

    **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday......

    13) Red Sox 7, Rays 5-- Travis Shaw hit his first two big league homers, scored five runs and made himself the early favorite to be the #1 pick in our fantasy league next March. Rosters in our league froze for the season Friday.

    12) Guy in RF bleachers who came up with Shaw's first HR actually gave it up with no guarantee of getting anything for it-- he is either really rich, really nice or just plain stupid. You can hold a guy up in that case; he has to have his first HR ball.

    11) If that was me, think I would come up with a payment plan for Mr Shaw; I'd give it up relatively cheap off the top, but then I would get incentives along the way the rest of his career, $*** every time he made an All-Star team, $*** every time he was on a World Series champ, $15K or so if he made the Hall of Fame, I'd in effect become a financial partner in his career.

If he hit those milestones, Shaw would be really, really rich anyway. If he doesn't have a very good career, then I don't get very much for the ball, but he still has it.

    10) Last time a Red Sox player scored five runs in a game was Dustin Pedroia way back on August 12, 2008.

    9) Odd record with an asterisk: record for most consecutive strikeouts by a position player is Rick Ankiel, who K'd ten times in a row, but the asterisk is that Ankiel was a converted pitcher. Washington's Michael Taylor struck out seven times in a row this week, before finally making contact last night.

    8) Sounds like the Angels aren't having much fun this year; team cut ties with Josh Hamilton after his drug relapse, with CJ Wilson offering the only public support, now there are rumors that teammates are unhappy with Wilson's not trying to pitch thru elbow pain, even though he said he has been doing that the last couple of months.

Halos lost eight of last nine games after a 17-3 run. Stay tuned.

    7) Ten different guys have started in leftfield for the Angels this season.

    6) I told someone back in May that Ben Zobrist "will hit .350 or .400 when he leaves the A's". He hit two homers for the Royals yesterday- he had six HRs in 268 PAs for Oakland this season, missing 35 or 40 games with a bad knee.

    5) Why would any A's fan buy jerseys/replica t-shirts with players' names on the back? Guys who are good rarely stay too long.

Last year I was walking on the Strip in Las Vegas and a young guy had a Matt Holliday A's t-shirt on; Holliday played 93 games for the A's in '09 before they moved him to St Louis for three stiffs- the players they gave up for him (Carlos Gonzalez and Huston Street) were way better. Somehow that got left out of Moneyball, the movie.

    4) There is a place called the NoMad Hotel in NYC that has a two-story library that has a bar in it and a restaurant with very fancy food. Looks very expensive

    3) Texas Rangers sold 8,500 extra tickets once they announced that Cole Hamels was making his Rangers' debut Saturday night. Good walk-up crowd but then the Texas bullpen blew the game late 9-7 to the Giants. Hamels left with a 7-5 lead.

    2) Illinois lost starting point guard Tracy Abrams for the year already; he blew his knee out for the second time. Have to feel bad for the kid.

    1) 37 years ago last night Pete Rose's 44-game hit streak was ended by the Braves; I remember that night because I was in NYC, went to the comedy club Catch a Rising Star with my cousin. Richard Belzer was the emcee, the guy on Homicide. Pat Benatar sang that night too. Pretty cool night.

              August good month/bad month pitchers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the MLB trading deadline officially closed, and the NFL preseason whetting our pigskin palates, the month of August sets the table for the stretch run of the baseball season. Which pitchers can we count on to satisfy our tastes, and which ones figure to sour our stomachs? Take a look below.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team-starts over the course of the last three seasons during the month of August. On the flip side, we've also listed pitchers that struggle in August, winning 33% percent or less of their team-start efforts. To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each April over the last three years. And for your convenience alongside each record we break down each pitcher’s greatest success or greatest failure rate either home (H) or away (A) within his good or bad month.

Note: * designates a categorical repeat appearance by this pitcher, maintaining status quo from last season’s August list.

I’ll be back next month with September’s Good Month Pitchers. Until then, as the legendary Neil Diamond would say, enjoy the hot August nights.

              GOOD MONTH PITCHERS:

              *Buehrle, Mark • 11-5 (5-2 A)

If Toronto fails to make the post-season, it will not be Buehrle's fault since he had another strong season as a middle of pack starter for the Blue Jays. On July 26th he walked his first batter in the 127 he faced over the prior month and that outing ended a streak of 11 consecutive quality starts. Highly dependable.

              *Gallardo, Yovani • 10-3 (6-1 A)

After pitching well in May and June, July was bumpy for this Texas hurler who longer has the blazing fastball. On the season, his numbers are fairly typical of his career and if the Rangers score a few more times, Gallardo could bounce back.

              *Hamels, Cole • 11-5 (5-2 A)

Hamels will be joining the Texas Rangers and all indications are he will take the ball either Aug. 1st. His last start was historic, a no-hitter and besides the two walks, no ball put in play was really close to being a hit. Being on a better team with immediate brighter future might well propel the lefty to a strong close of the season.

              Iwakuma, Hisashi • 11-5 (6-2 A)

Iwakuma struggled when first coming off the DL, but turned in terrific work over three starts, allowing just four runs on 14 hits and four walks while striking out 18 in 20.2 innings. However, he was clobbered for six runs and 10 hits in final July outing and will attempt to get back to normal.

              Kershaw, Clayton • 11-5 (6-1 A)

So much for the demise Clayton Kershaw whose ERA is as 2.48 and opposing hitters are back to hitting just over .200 against him. In July the dominating lefty pitched 33 innings, allowing 19 hits, striking out 45, walking only two and surrendered ONE earned run (as of July 30th). August is looking pretty good.

              Sanchez, Anibal • 9-4 (6-2 H)

After winning seven straight decisions (Tigers 8-0), Sanchez lost his last of July at Tampa Bay, 5-2. He starts this month with an ERA of 4.61 which is his highest since 2008. The culprit has been the gopher ball already having allowed 22, which is a career-high.

              *Scherzer, Max • 13-4 (7-0 H)

Still a great hurler, Scherzer was tagged for five runs twice last month and conceded six of the 13 homers he's given up on the season. Chances are he will be his usual self with more big games coming up in August. Opposing hitters batting only .193 against him.

              *Shields, James • 12-5 (7-1 A)

After starting 7-0, Shields is 1-4 since. Though San Diego has only won two of his last eight starts since that time, his ERA has only gone up just slightly and his ERA for July was 2.50.

              Strasburg, Stephen • 13-3 (7-1 H)

Been on the DL since July 5th with an oblique strain and made rehab start on July 29th. Expected to return this month but all bets are off on his true effectiveness.

              Tillman, Chris • 12-5 (4-1 A)

Tillman has found his groove since being hammered for six runs on six hits on June 21st, not allowing more than two runs in five starts. Biggest difference is the right-hander is averaging almost 10 groundball outs compared to six in five previous starts and strikeouts also are up. Should have a strong August.

              Zimmermann, Jordan • 12-5 (7-2 H)

When watching Zimmermann, it always seems his record should be better. Starting the month at just 8-6, the two most notable stats that catch your eye is opposing teams have a higher OBP against him (.311 vs. career .295) and his strikeouts are on pace to be the lowest of his career. If Washington is to win the NL East and make the World Series, Zimmermann has to produce.

              BAD MONTH PITCHERS:

              Alvarez, Henderson • 3-10 (1-4 A)

Alvarez has been diagnosed with a tear in his right shoulder and will undergo season-ending arthroscopic surgery,

              Eovaldi, Nate • 5-12 (1-7 H)

His 10-2 record is a bit suspect with a 4.27 ERA, WHIP of 1.48 and teams hitting .300 against his tosses coming into this month. But Eovaldi has done what's asked of him and he's getting double-digit groundball outs in his last five starts. Yankees 6-1 in his last seven starts, will it continue?

              Happ, J. A. • 5-11 (2-7 A)

After becoming a surprise fifth starter for Seattle and owning a 2.98 ERA on May 15th, Happ his seen his ERA creep up to 4.64. Never a hard thrower, his problems start the third time around the batting order.

              Harang, Aaron • 4-12 (1-7 H)

Harang has been on the disabled list since July 2 with plantar fasciitis and returned with five strong innings on July 30 (5 innings - one run allowed) against Atlanta, earning the victory and ending his seven-game losing streak. He's still on a bad club and the losses are likely to continue.

              *Hellickson, Jeremy • 4-13 (2-9 A)

For the first several months the Diamondbacks starter was brutal, with an ERA over 5, and every couple of fair outings led to shelling. Hellickson was sharp in July with a 1.88 ERA, but that just probably means August will be nasty for him and backers.

              Hernandez, Roberto • 4-8 (1-4 H)

Made 11 starts for Houston through June 5th before being sent to bullpen where he's been since.

              *Jimenez, Ubaldo • 3-10 (1-6 A)

Jimenez will never be anything more than a back of the rotation hurler because his delivery is so hard to repeat time after time. However, for him he's having a good season like he did in Cleveland two years ago, when he was 13-9 with 3.31 ERA. His track record is not good late in the season, though, so let's see what he does.

              Keuchel, Dallas • 4-11 (1-4 A)

Ace of the Houston staff having a true breakout campaign and opposing hitters are just past the Mendoza Line (.200 BA) and his WHIP is under 1.00. Don't look for his past numbers to continue.

              Miley, Wade • 5-10 (3-6 H)

Miley has not come close to being the same pitcher since 2012, his first year as a starter with Arizona. This year it has been more of the same of being inconsistent in his first year with Boston and chances are he will repeat the past.

              Wood, Travis • 5-13 (1-8 H)

Made a few starts early for the Cubs, before manager Joe Maddon said that was enough and Wood has been in bullpen since mid-May.

Game of the Day: Nationals at Mets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Nationals at New York Mets (-134, 6.5)

The New York Mets have a chance to move into a tie for first place in the National League East on Sunday night when they host the division-leading Washington Nationals in the finale of a three-game series. The Mets have recorded a pair of one-run victories and can post their first three-game sweep of Washington since May 25-27, 2009.

Lucas Duda overshadowed the New York debut of newly acquired Yoenis Cespedes (0-for-3) by continuing his power surge with a pair of solo homers and a tiebreaking RBI double following an intentional walk to Cespedes. Duda has eight blasts over his past seven games and took over the major-league lead with a fifth multi-homer game. Shortstop Ian Desmond, who was 5-for-9 in a three-game series against the Mets last month, had a two-run single as the Nationals failed to score more than a pair of runs for the fifth time in six games. Washington right-hander Jordan Zimmermann attempts to prevent a sweep as he opposes New York rookie Noah Syndergaard.

                TV:
                8:08 p.m. ET, ESPN

                LINE HISTORY:
Books opened the Mets -137, but that has moved to -134. The total opened at 6.5.

                PITCHING MATCHUP:
Nationals RH Jordan Zimmermann (8-6, 3.36 ERA) vs. Mets RH Noah Syndergaard (5-5, 2.70)

Zimmermann did not factor in the decision after giving up three runs in seven innings versus the Mets on July 22 and was saddled with a loss six days later after he was reached for three runs over six innings at Miami. Zimmermann won his last three starts heading into the All-Star break but is winless over his last three turns. He beat the Mets with six innings of one-run ball in his season debut to improve to 8-5 against them.

Syndergaard was perfect through six innings in his last start and wound up tossing eight scoreless innings of three-hit ball in a 4-0 victory over San Diego. He did not factor in the decision in his previous turn versus Zimmermann and the Nationals despite giving up one run over five innings, a start marred by a season-high five walks. Syndergaard has been superb at home with a 5-1 record and 1.46 ERA in seven starts at Citi Field.

                TRENDS:

                * Home team is 6-0 in Baker's last six games behind home plate.
                * Nationals are 8-1 in Zimmermann's last nine Sunday starts.
                * Mets are 4-0 in Syndergaard's last four home starts.
                * Under is 5-0 in the last five meetings in New York.

                CONSENSUS:
Fifty-eight percent of bettors are backing the Mets.

                  Sunday, August 2

Dickey to make rare start on three days' rest

The Toronto Blue Jays will hand the ball to knuckleballer R.A. Dickey against the Kansas City Royals Sunday, giving him his first start on three days' rest since the 2011 season.

Dickey has pitched well of late, allowing three earned runs or fewer in 10 of his previous 11 starts heading into Sunday's finale of a four-game set versus the Royals.

That has not necessarily meant wins for the Blue Jays as the club has gone just 5-6 in those 11 starts, but the Under has been a hot bet in those 11 Dickey starts, going 6-3-2 over that time.

Books are currently offering the Jays in the -128 ball park while the Royals, who are expected to counter with Edinson Volquez, are being offered around +118. The total is down to 8.5 from the opening 9.

                  Windy conditions in Chicago Sunday

According to forecasts, wind will blow out to leftfield at around 20 miles per hour when the Chicago White Sox host the New York Yankees Sunday afternoon.

Furthermore, there is a 40 percent possibility of thunderstorms during the game.

Ivan Nova is scheduled to pitch for the Yankees while Jeff Samardzija is slated to get the ball for the Pale Hose. Oddsmakers have the Sox priced in the -118 vicinity and the total is 8.5.

Phillies on fire against division opponents

The Philadelphia Phillies have gone 7-0 in their last seven ball games heading into Sunday's series finale against the Atlanta Braves.

The Phils, who have put together a spectacular 12-2 record since the All-Star break, have taken the first three games versus the Braves in their current series, outscoring them 25-6 in the process. The Phils came out of the break with a three-game sweep of the Miami Marlins and took the finale of a three-game series against the Washington Nationals back in late June to build their streak against the NL East.

They'll look to make eight as they go up against Julio Teheran Sunday afternoon. Adam Morgan is probable to start for the Phils.

Norris to make Tigers debut Sunday

Daniel Norris, the centerpiece of the Detroit Tigers' return in the David Price trade to the Toronto Blue jays, will make his debut for his new club when the Tigers visit the Baltimore Orioles Sunday afternoon.

The 22-year-old made five starts for the Jays earlier this season and pitched well in four of those outings, but issued 12 walks in 23 1/3 innings. He sports a 1-1 record with a 3.86 ERA and 1.50 WHIP so far this season.

Norris and the Tigers are presently +168 while the Orioles, who are projected to counter with Ubaldo Jimenez, are currently -183.

White Sox on a roll for Over bettors

Over bets have cashed in six-straight Chicago White Sox games heading into their series finale against the New York Yankees Sunday afternoon.

Despite the run of scorelines going over the total, the Sox are still one of the best Under bets in the league with an Over/Under mark of 43-55-4 season to date.

Runs have been plentiful of late, however, with the Pale Hose averaging 7.3 runs per game and opponents plating an average of 6.16 runs per game over the past six.

Ivan Nova is slated to start for the Yanks while Jeff Samardzija is up for the Sox. Books are currently offering a total of 9 after it moved up from the opening 8.5.

Red Sox struggle when Gibson works home plate

The Boston Red Sox are just 1-7 in their last eight ball games when umpire Greg Gibson is working behind home plate.

Gibson hasn't worked a Sox game yet this season, so those eight games span 2012 through last season. The Sox did, however, win their last game with Gibson calling pitching 7-6 over the Oakland A's on June 22 last year.

It should be noted that Gibson is one of the top home umpires this season. Home teams have gone 14-5 in Gibson's 19 games behind the dish. That mark is good enough to rank him as the fourth best ump for home teams among umpires that have worked at least 10 games.

The Sox will host the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park Sunday.
