    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Top six and worst six NFL teams in turnover conversion last year.......

    6) Buffalo-Detroit-SF, +7
    5) Arizona, +8
    4) Seattle, +9
    T2) Houston, +12
    T2) New England, +12
    1) Green Bay +14

    T26) Tampa Bay-Philly, -8
    28) Tennessee -10
    29) New Jersey Jets -11
    30) Washington -12
    31) New Orleans -13
    32) Oakland -15

    **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here......

    13) Pirates 5, Reds 4-- Starling Marte had the best defensive 9th inning I've ever seen an outfielder have. He threw out the tying run at the plate after a single to left, then ended the game with a tremendous diving catch as the Pirates won again. High drama!!!

    12) Mets 2, Nationals 1 (12)-- Two nights ago, Wilmer Flores was crying at his SS position, thinking he had been traded to Milwaukee, but that trade never happened and 48 hours later, Flores was BMOC, hittg a walk-off homer in the 12th inning as the Mets beat the first-place Natonals. Had to be happy for the guy.

    11) Mets added Yoenis Cespedes for the last two months of the season; he solidifies LF for them and will add a potent bat to a important lineup.

    10) Cespedes is now on his fourth team in 367 days, in part because no one seems to want to sign him long-term and they don't get a draft pick if he stays and then leaves as a free agent. If no one wants him, please, please send him back to Oakland.

    9) Friday was a "blue moon", that unusual occasion when we have two full moons in the same month. Happens every 30 months or so; next one is in 2018.

    8) Russell Wilson signs with the Seahawks for four years, $87.6M, roughly $60M of it guaranteed. Good job by the Seahawks getting that distraction out of the way.

    7) Padres' pitcher Ian Kennedy was scratchd from his start Friday night so he could go home for the birth of his fourth child, but weather in Miami was stormy, so the flight was cancelled and Kennedy made his scheduled start after all.

    6) How is Harold Reynolds on TV? He seems likeable enough, but he says some stuff that makes you scratch your head.

3:15 Friday, San Diego pitchers are playing frisbee in the outfield in Miami, four hours before gametime. Reynolds comments, "Why is it so dark there?" Um, maybe because the roof of the stadium is closed?!?!?!? He talks before he thinks way too much.

    5) Five teams who were under .500 on July 30 have made the playoffs, last one being the '06 Dodgers. AL Wild Card is soft right now; it could happen this year.

    4) Toronto went all-in to win the division in part because 13 of their last 56 games are against the first place Bronx Bombers.

    3) Golden State Warriors saved $8M by trading Gerald Wallace to Philly for Rider alum Jason Thompson.

    2) As odd as Harold Reynolds often appears to be on TV, former Colorado GM Dan O'Dowd is very good, letting us know how GMs think and how things often shake out as far as trades go. MLB Network was way ahead of ESPN as far as trade deadline coverage, not even close.

    1) There have been more 90-degree days in Seattle this year than in Chicago.

    Go figure.

MLB betting cheat sheet: Mariners going Over totals with ease
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the weekend major-league schedule:

            Blue Jays Deadline Deals

As far as Blue Jays fans are concerned, the rest of the league might as well just waive a white flag. The acquisition of Troy Tulowitzki, Ben Revere and David Price at the deadline certainly makes the Jays a serious contender, but I think it's a little premature to start planning the parade. There's still a glaring weakness and that's in the bullpen when I think LaTroy Hawkins will help, but will fall short of solving all their problems.

            Orioles Bolster Battery

Gerardo Parra is riding a 13 game hitting streak, batting .444 since the All Star break. The 29 year old is batting .328 for the season, the fourth best average in the National League. He's on his way to Baltimore, hoping to help the Orioles get to the post-season.

            Hot Diggity Dog

The last place Phillies came out of the All Star break winning 10 of their first 12 games, and four of five on the road. They cleaned up in Chicago, sweeping the Cubs at Wrigley. They host the Braves this weekend, and both these teams have been cleaning house at the deadline.

            Pitching Notes

*Cole Hamels will make his debut in Texas after tossing a no-hitter in his last start for the Phillies at Wrigley. He's starting opposite Tim Hudson and the Giants, who roughed him up earlier this season. He has had success against the Giants in his career though, with a record of 1-0 with a 2.64 ERA in four starts versus San Francisco over the last three seasons.

*Jose Fernandez is still undefeated in Miami, with a career record of 15-0 with an ERA under 1.50. His next home start comes on Sunday opposite James Shields, who has only recorded one win over his last 10 starts.

            Hitting Notes

*Melky Cabrera is swinging a hot bat, batting .485 with nine extra-base hits and eight RBIs over the last seven days. The White Sox come into this series versus the Yankees as winners of seven of their last eight. Ivan Nova will start for New York on Sunday, and Cabrera is 6-for-9 with a pair of home runs lifetime versus Nova.

*Buster Posey is hitting .444 over the last seven days, and he's tied for fifth the National League hitting .325 on the season. The Giants are in Texas this weekend, and pitcher's have been getting punished in this hitter's park in recent days. Posey might spoil Cole Hamels debut, as he's owned the veteran, going 11-for-20 with a home run and five RBIs lifetime.

            Totals Streak

The Seattle Mariners have seen the total go over at a rate of 8-1-1 in their last 10, and that trend may continue in Minnesota over the weekend. The Twins are riding a long standing over trend at home, going above the number at a rate of 45-22-5 in their last 72 home games.

            Injury Notes

*Ryan Zimmerman and Jayson Werth have returned to the lineup for Washington, and the game-winning home run came of the bat of Zimmerman in Washington's 1-0 win over Miami on Thursday.

*Robinson Cano is listed as day to day with a strained abdominal muscle, and he missed the Mariners last two games. He could return Friday, and the Mariners have missed him as he's been tearing it up in July batting .337 with seven homers and 18 RBIs.

Red Sox becoming a favorite for Over bettors

The Boston Red Sox have been one of the hottest teams in baseball when it comes to going Over totals.

The Over has paid out in each of Boston's last six games. Joe Kelly is the probable starter for Saturday's contest against southpaw Matt Moore and the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park.

At the time of writing, Pinnacle Sports was offering a total of nine for the AL East tilt.

Road woes have been plaguing Royals' Ventura

The Kansas City Royals haven't enjoyed life on the road behind Yordano Ventura lately, dropping each of his last five starts away from home.

K.C. is scheduled to send Ventura to the rubber at Rogers Centre Saturday for a date with the Toronto Blue Jays. The Bluebirds are slated to counter with veteran hurler Mark Buehrle.

As of this writing, the Royals were in the +119 ballpark at sportsbooks.

                Hitter's wind at Fenway Saturday

Saturday's matchup at Fenway Park between the Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox will favor the men at the dish thanks to Mother Nature.

The forecast is calling for gusts of up to 14 mph blowing out to right field at game time. Inclement weather is not expected to be a factor, however, as it's expected to be an overcast afternoon with temperatures in the 85 degrees Fahrenheit range.

Boston is currently -113 on the moneyline at sportsbooks.

Overs aplenty when Reds face right-handers

There's been no shortage of runs scored when the Cincinnati Reds have faced right-handed pitching as of late.

In the Reds last six outings against righties, the Over is a perfect 6-0. Cincy takes on the Pittsburgh Pirates Saturday with RHP Gerrit Cole listed as the probable starter for the Buccos.

The total for the game is presently sitting at eight.

Hey UDog---You hit on one of my biggest pet peeves today--announcers like Harold Reynolds that make such stupid comments--just drives me nuts. Just found out we're going to be stuck with Solomon Wolcotts doing the color commentary for the Brown's preseason games this year. YUCK!! I'll have to turn off the sound and listen to the radio. Wolcotts has never had an original thought in his life.....how he ever keeps a job on TV is beyond me.

Good idea! Back in the early days of Monday Night Football, a lot of guys would turn down Gifford, Cosell and Meredith (mainly Cosell) and listen to Jack Buck and Hank Stram on CBS radio network. They were just great.
