Why baseball bettors should pay attention to heat and humidity

    Jul 28, 2015

Pitching matchups, home field advantage, current form. These are the types of angles that even the most novice of baseball bettors consider before walking to the window to plunk down a chunk of cash with the hopes of a profitable return.

However, as the gambler’s level of sophistication increases, so too does his or her attention to detail when it comes to handicapping the matchup in question. Ballpark factors are integral in evaluating totals, while lefty/righty splits, line movements and situational analysis serve as important tools in gaining an edge when working to identify a potential winning wager.

You’ll sometimes encounter the phrase, “Paralysis by over analysis,” which simply implies that one can suffer adverse consequences from too much research. But one important key for all bettors, no matter the sport, should be to invest as much time in studying the game as much as possible, as long as that time is dedicated to sifting through the information that truly matters. The color of the road team’s jerseys means nothing.

Additionally, a piece of information such as, “The Chicago Bears are 0-7 ATS on Monday night football over the last 20 years,” could, on its face, appear to serve as a valuable slice of intel…right up until you realize that the Bears haven’t played on Monday night in 15 years. What does Chicago’s roster from 2002 have to do with Chicago’s roster in 2015?

That’s preciously where we come into play.

Today’s lesson/science experiment (gasp!) focuses on the influence weather, specifically heat and humidity, has on a baseball. We all know that centerfield gusts at Wrigley Field will lead to a longer ball flight, just as the higher elevation in Denver will also aid in carrying a baseball further through the air.

But what about heat and humidity and how these two weather factors affect a ball’s flight and trajectory?

The answer is relatively simple to regurgitate from any seventh grade science book: As air warms, it expands, which in turn lowers the air’s density while paving the way for a baseball to travel longer distances. The same can be said as it relates to humidity, as air with a higher dew point is less dense, meaning baseballs will travel further in higher humidity if all other factors are considered equal.

Simply put, the higher the temperature and/or humidity, the farther a baseball will travel. The good news here is that you don’t need to invest in meteorology lessons in order to improve your skills as a baseball bettor, as websites like Weather.com, AccuWeather.com and Baseball-Weather.com, among others, have all the information you need at just the few clicks of a mouse.

As we transition from rudimentary science back to gambling (hoorah!), the first element to consider is the fact that of the 30 ballparks that comprise Major League Baseball locales, one (Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida) is a fixed roof dome stadium while six others (Chase Field in Phoenix, Marlins Park in Miami, Miller Park in Milwaukee, Minute Maid Park in Houston, Rogers Centre in Toronto and Safeco Field in Seattle) feature retractable roofs. That means when the temperatures and humidity get too high in any of these seven cities, the likelihood is great that the game will be played indoors and away from the elements, which leaves us with 23 stadiums left to evaluate.

The next item on our checklist is to create an adequate sample size, but one that attempts to eliminate the “Steroid era” in Major League Baseball, as run production was at an all-time high during this period of time, which was vastly different than what we watch on television today. So with that in mind, we’ll use 2010 through the end of last week as our sample size.

Using the above parameters, here’s what we discovered:

WHEN TEMPERATURES RANGE FROM 95-99 DEGREES

    Home teams: 86-63 (.577)
Total runs scored per game: 9.9

WHEN TEMPERATURES RANGE FROM 100-104 DEGREES

    Home teams: 36-23 (.610)
Total runs scored per game: 10.2

WHEN TEMPERATURES RANGE FROM 105 DEGREES AND UP

    Home teams: 5-3 (.625)
Total runs scored per game: 11.5

A cursory first glance at this data would likely indicate that home teams tend to fair better and produce more profitable results when playing in hotter weather. However, when you factor in the juice that is associated with most of these home favorites, the profit margins quickly decrease. So employing the simple strategy of backing home teams in hot weather is not something that we would advise.

However, it is absolutely worth noting the total number of runs produced in games with hotter temperatures. Compare what you see above to the average number of runs scored per game during this time frame:

    2010: 8.76 runs/game
    2011: 8.56 runs/game
    2012: 8.65 runs/game
    2013: 8.33 runs/game
    2014: 8.13 runs/game

Combine those five years and you get an average of just 8.48 runs per game, which is a full three runs shy of the average runs scored in games with temperatures of 105 degrees or higher during the same time span. Additionally, you’ll note that games in the range of 95-99 degrees produce an average of 1.5 more runs per game while matchups in the range of 100-104 degrees produce an average of 1.74 more runs per outing.

As Stephen Hawking once famously said, “Science is not only a disciple of reason, but also one of romance and passion.”

In this instance it appears as if we are able to take our romance and passion surrounding baseball wagering and, combined with a science lesson in weather, determine yet another significant angle to consider when attempting to defeat the sports books.

Preview: Royals (61-41) at Blue Jays (53-51)
      Game: 3
      Venue: Rogers Centre
      Date: August 01, 2015 1:07 PM EDT

Being buyers before the trade deadline has put a bounce in the Toronto Blue Jays.

After their aggressive flurry of deals to spark a postseason push, the Blue Jays seek a fourth consecutive victory Saturday when they continue their series against the Kansas City Royals.

Toronto's wheeling and dealing brought some of the marquee names available north of the border in pitcher David Price and shortstop Troy Tulowitzki. The Blue Jays (53-51) added Ben Revere from Philadelphia on Friday prior to the deadline, giving them speed at the top of a power-based lineup.

'I just want to try to get on base and let the big boys do the work,' said Revere, who has 24 stolen bases and joins a Blue Jays team third in the majors with 135 homers.

In the thick of the wild-card race and lingering in the AL East race, Toronto was able to win without the longball in Friday night's 7-6, 11-inning victory as it rallied twice from three-run deficits. Josh Donaldson provided an RBI double and scored the tying run in a three-run seventh before plating Tulowitzki with a one-out walkoff single as the Blue Jays improved to 6-24 when failing to homer.

'He left me a pitch over the middle of the plate, what I was kind of waiting for the entire time,' said Donaldson, who is 7 for 13 with a homer and three doubles his last three games. 'I didn't miss it.'

While Price isn't slated to make his Blue Jays debut until Monday, they are in more than capable hands with Mark Buehrle (11-5, 3.29 ERA). The left-hander is 4-0 with a 1.26 ERA in as many starts versus the Royals since joining Toronto in 2013, and limited them to two runs in seven innings of a 6-2 road victory July 11.

Buehrle's 26 wins against Kansas City (61-41) are his second-most against any team, trailing only the 29 he's accumulated facing Minnesota. He's 5-1 in eight starts at Rogers Centre this year while being backed with 8.94 runs per outing - the best run support in the majors when pitching at home.

Ben Zobrist - 12 for 33 lifetime versus Buehrle - had a two-run single for his first hit with the Royals, who are looking to avoid a season high-tying fourth straight loss. Their vaunted bullpen gave up four runs Friday, spoiling Johnny Cueto's debut, and their relievers have a 4.96 ERA halfway through this 10-game road trip - well above their 2.20 season mark.

Kelvin Herrera may not be available after throwing 34 pitches in back-to-back games and All-Star Wade Davis is day to day with a sore back. Closer Greg Holland has yet to pitch in this four-game set, and Ned Yost may shy away from using Ryan Madson - seven of the 13 runs he's given up this year have come in his last two appearances against Toronto, during which he's retired one batter.

Yordano Ventura (5-7, 4.86), who got a reprieve from a demotion to the minors, tries to win a second consecutive start. Still in the rotation only because Jason Vargas suffered a season-ending elbow injury, Ventura recalled flashes of his 14-win rookie season in 2014, limiting Houston to one run in seven innings of a 5-1 victory Sunday.

'The two things that helped today was that I attacked the hitters and I threw inside,' Ventura told MLB's official website via a translator. "I feel like I pitched similar to last year."

Ventura allowed two hits over five scoreless innings in his lone career start against the Blue Jays last April.

Preview: Rays (51-53) at Red Sox (46-58)
        Game: 2
        Venue: Fenway Park
        Date: August 01, 2015 1:35 PM EDT

Letting the trade deadline slip by without making any major deals, the Tampa Bay Rays think they already have enough to reach the postseason.

They could have a hard time getting there if they keep wasting opportunities against last-place teams, however.

They'll try to avoid a third straight loss Saturday against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.

The Rays (51-53) were content to largely stay put at the deadline, only dealing reliever Kevin Jepsen to Minnesota for a pair of minor league pitching prospects. They're three games behind the Twins for the AL's second wild-card spot, and any improvements are likely going to have to come from in-house.

"The way we see it, three games out of the wild card today, if we play to our potential, we're going to be in it in September and have a chance at the postseason," president of baseball operations Matt Silverman told MLB's official website.

Tampa Bay, though, needs to ditch its recent habit of underachieving against lesser competition. The Rays dropped two of three at major league-worst Philadelphia from July 20-22, were swept in four games by cellar-dwelling Cleveland at home June 29-July 2, and lost two of three at home to Boston from June 26-28.

The season series with the Red Sox, who own the AL's second-worst record, is 5-5 after Boston won for just the fourth time in 16 games with a 7-5 victory Friday.

The Red Sox (46-58) also made little noise during deadline week, only acquiring reliever Ryan Cook from Oakland.

Facing Tampa Bay's Matt Moore (1-2, 7.61 ERA) doesn't appear intimidating after five uninspiring starts since returning from Tommy John surgery. He's failed to complete more than five innings and given up at least four runs four times.

Luck hasn't been on the left-hander's side, either, with opponents hitting .375 on balls in play.

"I feel fine ... I feel good out there," said Moore, who is surrendering a .441 on-base percentage with runners in scoring position. "It's just a matter of making a couple pitches in situations where you have runners on."

He won his last two starts against Boston, most recently a two-hitter in a 3-0 road victory July 22, 2013.

The Red Sox have been middling against lefties, hitting .245. David Ortiz is having his worst season ever against left-handers, batting .185, but he's fared well against Moore, going 6 for 13 with a home run and two doubles.

Joe Kelly (2-6, 5.94) has been one of many disappointments for Boston, especially after predicting before the season he'd win the Cy Young.

Kelly has been anything but fit for an award and is 0-2 with a 7.33 ERA in two starts since rejoining the team from Triple-A Pawtucket. He threw 3 1-3 innings Monday against the Chicago White Sox - his second-shortest effort of the season - giving up four earned runs and seven hits.

"You don't really predict that, but it is what it is right now," Kelly said of his struggles. "Something that I just have to keep fighting. I'm not going to give up out there. Just going to keep pitching."

Kelly gave up five runs over five-plus innings of Boston's 7-5 loss to the Rays on April 22. Steven Souza Jr. hit a solo shot off the right-hander.

Evan Longoria is 15 for 36 during a nine-game hitting streak against the Red Sox after a 3-for-4 night Friday.

Preview: Angels (55-47) at Dodgers (58-45)
          Game: 2
          Venue: Dodger Stadium
          Date: August 01, 2015 4:05 PM EDT

A few days later than expected, Clayton Kershaw finally appears ready to continue his recent dominance.

Riding the majors' longest active scoreless streak, the left-hander will get the ball in the Freeway Series on Saturday at Dodger Stadium opposite unbeaten Andrew Heaney and the Los Angeles Angels.

Though Kershaw (8-6, 2.51 ERA) saw his bid for a perfect game end in the seventh inning last Thursday against the New York Mets, he hasn't allowed a run in 29 innings after tossing a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts during that 3-0 win.

"That's what aces do. When he's like that, they've got no chance," teammate Jimmy Rollins told MLB's official website.

Kershaw last yielded a run in the fourth inning of a 2-1 loss to the Mets on July 3. In three starts since, he's recorded two complete games and struck out 38 without a walk over 26 innings to become the first pitcher in history with three straight scoreless starts that included no walks and at least 10 strikeouts.

Kershaw, 3-1 with an 0.97 ERA in his last five home starts, had this start originally pushed back from Wednesday to Friday due to hip soreness. He then got pushed back one more day, with Zack Greinke pitching Friday's three-game series opener and getting the win in a 5-3 victory.

'As much as anything, we're just making sure that everything's good,' manager Don Mattingly said. 'He threw yesterday before his (charity bowling) event, and we knew he was feeling good. But we wanted to give him the extra day and keep Zack on (his regular rest).'

Kershaw, who insisted to reporters he will pitch Saturday, is 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA in three home starts against the Angels.

Albert Pujols is 9 for 20 with four doubles against him while Mike Trout is 2 for 3 with a double. Both faced Kershaw this year in the All-Star game, with Pujols walking and Trout grounding out against the NL's losing pitcher.

Heaney (5-0, 1.79) will make his seventh start after winning his last five. He is trying to become the first Angels rookie to win six straight starts since Jered Weaver in 2006. In that year, Weaver also became the only pitcher in club history to throw at least six innings and allow two runs or fewer in his first seven starts.

"I'm trying to take the same stuff out there; the only thing that changes is the hitters," he told MLB's official website.

The Angels (55-47) have provided a healthy amount of support with 35 runs for him in his last four outings. That includes Sunday's 13-7 victory over Texas in which the left-hander gave up two runs in six innings.

Greinke struck out eight in eight innings for the Dodgers (58-45). Howie Kendrick homered in his first game against his former team and rookie Alex Guerrero hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the fourth inning.

Trout finished a double shy of the cycle and drilled his major league-leading 32nd homer in the ninth off closer Kenley Jansen. He finished with three RBIs and half of the Angels' hits, with Kole Calhoun getting the other three.

Pujols was 0 for 4 with three strikeouts and will seek to avoid going hitless in three straight games for the first time since Aug. 31-Sept. 2.

The Dodgers have won six of their last eight at home while the Angels have lost seven of eight overall.

Preview: Tigers (50-53) at Orioles (52-50)
            Game: 3
Venue: Oriole Park at Camden Yards
            Date: August 01, 2015 7:05 PM EDT

Gerardo Parra arrived too late to make his debut for Baltimore and was only a witness to a stirring comeback victory.

The newly acquired outfielder could get his first opportunity to play for the Orioles and attempt to extend his 14-game hit streak Saturday night against the Detroit Tigers.

Parra, acquired from Milwaukee on Friday, made his first appearance in the Baltimore dugout in the second inning and watched Baltimore (52-50) erase a six-run deficit for an 8-7 victory. Manny Machado provided a go-ahead, a two-run homer in the sixth, and Adam Jones went 3 for 5 with a three-run shot in the fifth for the Orioles' sixth win in seven games.

Baltimore nearly rallied from a seven-run deficit in Thursday's opener, a 9-8 loss, and will try to get a quick jump on the Tigers (50-53) with help from its newest player. Parra was fourth in the NL with a .328 average, and had nine homers and 24 doubles.

He's 23 for 50 (.460) during his streak - tied with teammate J.J. Hardy's for the longest in the majors - and has batted .390 in 43 games dating back to June 11. Parra is also a two-time Gold Glove-winning outfielder.

"I've always been a fan of his," manager Buck Showalter said. "The guy won a Gold Glove in left and right and is having a big year offensively. Plays the game like our fans like to see it played. He's really likes winning, so he should fit in well."

Parra is also 8 for 14 with two doubles lifetime against Tigers starter Anibal Sanchez (10-8, 4.61 ERA), who had a career high-tying string of seven consecutive victories and a four-start win streak snapped Monday.

Sanchez gave up three runs in 5 1-3 innings in a 5-2 loss in Tampa Bay while getting zero runs of support.

The right-hander received 56 runs in his prior eight games, including a 7-3 win over Baltimore on July 17. He won't have Yoenis Cespedes to help him after the Tigers slugger was traded to New York Mets on Friday.

Detroit, though, had 16 hits for the second straight game and its first without its second-leading home run hitter and second-best RBI man.

"Guys continue to play hard," manager Brad Ausmus said. "Offensively we're fine right now. A week ago we couldn't buy a run. Now we seem to get runs but we can't seem to hold them."

Kevin Gausman (1-2, 4.20) will try to power the Orioles to another victory over Detroit while hoping to get better run support. The right-hander has gotten a combined four runs in his five starts this season, going 0-2 with a 4.08 ERA, and couldn't benefit from one of the best performances of his career Monday.

Gausman tossed 7 2-3 scoreless innings in a 2-1 victory against Atlanta.

Gausman is 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in two starts against Detroit and allowed five runs in four innings in his lone matchup last season, a 7-5 loss May 14, 2014.

Sanchez yielded two runs in six innings in defeating Baltimore last month and is 2-0 with a 3.86 ERA in three starts against the Orioles.

Preview: Braves (46-57) at Phillies (40-64)
              Game: 3
              Venue: Citizens Bank Park
              Date: August 01, 2015 7:05 PM EDT

With Cole Hamels' storied tenure over in Philadelphia, the path is clear for highly touted Aaron Nola to push toward becoming the Phillies' No. 1 starter.

Nola will try to continue that work Saturday night when he pitches opposite Atlanta Braves prospect Matt Wisler.

Hamels concluded his 10 seasons in Philadelphia, an era that included winning the 2008 World Series MVP and a no-hitter last Saturday, with a trade to Texas on Friday. With their NL-worst 40-64 record, the Phillies have started rebuilding for the future, and Nola has the potential to play a significant role.

The right-hander took a 1-0 loss to Tampa Bay in his major league debut July 21 and got an 11-5 victory at the Chicago Cubs on Sunday in the encore to Hamels' no-hitter. Nola (1-1, 3.29 ERA) gave up two runs in his first seven innings and a two-run homer in the eighth.

"I'm just soaking as much as I can in right now," he told MLB's official website. "Being a part of all this is pretty amazing."

Nola will try to lead Philadelphia to its 12th win in 14 games facing Wisler (5-1, 3.43), making his eighth start. Both 22-year-old pitchers will make their first appearances in the NL East rivalry.

The Braves right-hander has won four consecutive decisions after a 3-2 victory in St. Louis on Sunday, Atlanta's lone one in the past nine games and only one in its last 13 road contests.

"He's a real competitive guy and he's going out there and giving it his all," catcher Ryan Lavarnway said. "He's got great stuff, so as he continues to grow, I'm excited to watch him."

Wisler yielded two runs in seven innings, and the Braves (46-57) could use another such performance following a 9-3 loss Friday.

Ryan Howard helped send Atlanta to a season high-tying fifth consecutive defeat by driving in a season-best four runs and Domonic Brown continued his hot hitting by going 2 for 5 with a two-run homer.

"It's been great, a total team effort on both sides of the ball," Howard said.

Brown is batting .424 (14 for 33) in his last eight games and has homered in each of the first two in this series. The Phillies were playing their first contest without leadoff hitter, Ben Revere, who was traded to Toronto on Friday.

Philadelphia is 11-2 since the All-Star break and looks to send the Braves to their first six-game overall skid since an 0-8 road trip July 29-Aug. 6, 2014. Atlanta is batting .220 while being outscored 34-14 in its last nine games.

"Right now we're not scoring runs," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "When you're down four runs in the first inning, it makes it tough, but our guys kept busting it."

Philadelphia will also seek a fourth consecutive win against Atlanta and try to win four in a row at home over the Braves for the first time since July 10-Sept. 7 2011.

Preview: Yankees (58-44) at White Sox (49-52)
                Game: 2
                Venue: U.S. Cellular Field
                Date: August 01, 2015 7:10 PM EDT

Mark Teixeira has a chance to do something Saturday night that has been accomplished four times in baseball history and never in the illustrious history of the New York Yankees.

Judging by his success against Chicago White Sox starter John Danks, he certainly has a chance.

Teixeira can become the first Yankee and fifth hitter to post three consecutive multihomer efforts as these clubs continue a three-game series in Chicago.

The slugger went deep twice in Thursday's 7-6 loss at Texas and did so again Friday, including a grand slam, as New York (58-44) built a six-run lead after two innings and cruised to a 13-6 victory. He finished 3 for 4 with six RBIs, driving in at least that many runs for the eighth time in his career.

Friday marked the 14th time Teixeira has homered from both sides of the plate, a major league record. He is hitting .457 with six homers, 11 RBIs and 12 runs scored in his last 12 games.

"It's a cool record to have," Teixeira said, "but hopefully I'll add to it."

If he does so Saturday, he will reach a different milestone by becoming the fifth player to homer multiple times in three straight contests. He would join the Anaheim Angels' Jeff DaVanon (2003), the Cincinnati Reds' Lee May (1969), the New York Mets' Frank Thomas (1962) and the Philadelphia Athletics' Gus Zernial (1951).

Teixeira is 8 for 18 with a homer and two doubles off Danks (5-8, 4.97 ERA), and he has a 1.124 OPS in his last 12 games at U.S. Cellular Field with four homers and 16 RBIs.

Danks posted a 2.08 ERA while not receiving a decision in two 2014 starts versus New York. The left-hander had a hit-or-miss July with three scoreless efforts and two in which he was charged with six earned runs, including Monday's 10-8 victory at Boston.

Jacoby Ellsbury is 8 for 17 off Danks, though he's in a 5-for-32 slump.

The Yankees have won seven straight games when opposed by left-handers and will once again likely start Chris Young, who is 1 for 3 versus Danks. Young is hitting .370 against lefties, going 8 for 18 with two homers against them since the All-Star break.

Alex Rodriguez has hit safely in seven straight, going 11 for 27 with four homers and 10 runs scored.

Brett Gardner and Brian McCann are both expected back in the lineup after not starting Friday, though Gardner is 1 for 11 off Danks and McCann is 2 for 9.

New York has won six straight over Chicago, which has lost consecutive games after a season-high, seven-game win streak.

The White Sox (49-52) have dropped five straight at home for the first time since a six-game slide there Sept. 10-15, 2013. Manager Robin Ventura said Friday's loss had nothing to do with the club's inability to acquire anyone at the trade deadline.

"That's not it, we just got beat in a game, that's part of it, that has nothing to do with yesterday or at noon today," he said.

Jose Abreu is enjoying an 11-game hitting streak in which he has a .381 average, four homers and 15 RBIs after going deep Friday for the third time in four games.

Adam LaRoche finished with his first four-hit effort in three years and pitched the ninth for his first mound appearance since 2003 at Double-A Greenville.

The Yankees will give Bryan Mitchell (0-0, 2.89) his first start and second of his career. The right-hander was recalled Thursday from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he went 5-5 with a 3.12 ERA in 15 starts.

Preview: Cubs (55-47) at Brewers (44-60)
                  Game: 3
                  Venue: Miller Park
                  Date: August 01, 2015 7:10 PM EDT

Hours after bolstering their already impressive pitching staff, the Chicago Cubs stifled the opponent for a third straight victory.

Chicago hopes Kyle Hendricks can bounce back from a couple of tough outings to extend that winning streak Saturday night against the offensively challenged Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park.

The Cubs (55-47) sent two minor leaguers to Miami on Friday for Dan Haren and acquired reliever Tommy Hunter from Baltimore for outfielder Junior Lake.

Haren, who owns his lowest ERA (3.42) in four seasons, brings 369 starts of experience with him, while Hunter has posted a 3.05 ERA over the last three years for the Orioles.

Chicago's pitching has been especially strong during a three-game winning streak, limiting Colorado and Milwaukee to a combined five runs and 18 hits. Jason Hammel allowed one run in 5 2-3 innings, and four relievers combined to yield one hit and one walk over 3 1-3 innings in Friday's 4-1 victory.

With a 3.46 ERA that ranks fifth in baseball, the onus is largely on the offense to elevate its play for the Cubs to reach the playoffs for the first time in seven years. Chicago is one game out of a wild-card spot despite averaging 3.8 runs, ranking in baseball's bottom third, and batting .228 with runners in scoring position to rank 26th.

Manager Joe Maddon's club has a major league-high 936 strikeouts.

"Offensively we have to continue to get our strike zones in order, and more than anything, runner on third, less than two outs, let's get them home," Maddon told MLB's official website. "We need to become more consistent situationally, and I've always believed having an organized strike zone is part of that."

Anthony Rizzo delivered Friday, homering for the third straight game and adding a single. Rizzo, who had homered once in 31 games before the last three, owns a 1.439 OPS with nine home runs and 20 RBIs in his last 17 against the Brewers.

Hendricks (4-5, 3.81 ERA) seeks his first win in five starts after struggling in his last two, allowing nine runs and 14 hits in 11 innings against Cincinnati and Colorado. Five combined walks were especially uncharacteristic after he had issued as many free passes in his previous eight outings.

Hendricks is 2-0 with a 0.98 ERA in three matchups with Milwaukee. Ryan Braun, who hit his 19th homer Friday, is 1 for 6 with three strikeouts off Hendricks.

Milwaukee (44-60) has dropped seven of nine and an offense that was already struggling looks overmatched after trading Gerardo Parra and Carlos Gomez. Parra was batting a team-leading .328, while Gomez had posted a club-best .821 OPS since 2013.

The Brewers, who also recently traded away Aramis Ramirez, are batting .201 while averaging 1.4 runs during this 1-6 stretch.

"We lost three players from our regular lineup," manager Craig Counsell said. "It's going to be the biggest challenge, for sure."

Counsell now hopes Matt Garza's recent improvement continues. Garza (5-11, 5.20) is 1-4 with a 6.06 ERA in his last six starts but was better in the last two. He threw six shutout innings in an 8-1 win over Cleveland on July 21, then allowed three runs over 5 2-3 innings in Sunday's 3-0 loss at Arizona.

A 12th loss would tie his career high from 2009 with Tampa Bay. Sunday marked his eighth defeat with one run of support or fewer.

Garza is 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA in four meetings with the Cubs since they traded him to Texas in 2013.

Chris Coghlan is 2 for 33 in his last nine against Milwaukee, but he's 5 for 12 with three doubles and a triple off Garza.

Preview: Mariners (47-57) at Twins (53-49)
                    Game: 3
                    Venue: Target Field
                    Date: August 01, 2015 7:10 PM EDT

The Minnesota Twins' grip on a wild-card spot is slipping.

Their advantage could disappear entirely if they can't bounce back from an abysmal performance and find a way to keep Nelson Cruz in check.

Minnesota tries to avoid its 10th loss in 13 games Saturday night against the visiting Seattle Mariners.

The Twins (53-49) ended a four-game skid by cranking out 13 hits in a 9-5 win in Thursday's series opener, but struck out 11 times while being held to one hit by Taijuan Walker in a 1-0 defeat Friday.

Baltimore and Toronto won Friday to pull within one game of Minnesota, and four other teams are within 3 1/2 games.

"Overall, the homestand hasn't been good," manager Paul Molitor said of his club's 2-5 stretch at Target Field. "You just got to kind of accept every day when you hit the pillow where you're at. No sense trying to overanalyze things."

Cruz dominated at the dish for Seattle (47-57), going 4 for 5 with his 27th home run and 16th double. He's 20 for 50 with six homers and 10 RBIs during an 11-game hitting streak.

The star slugger is batting .400 in his last 11 at Target Field with three homers in the past five.

While Jesus Montero also provided a spark Friday by homering upon being recalled from Triple-A Tacoma, Robinson Cano missed his third consecutive game due to an abdominal injury and Logan Morrison (thumb) sat out a second straight.

Kyle Gibson (8-8, 3.48 ERA) looks to get back on track for the Twins after rough outings against the Los Angeles Angels and New York Yankees. He gave up a total of 11 earned runs in 10 1-3 innings after allowing nine in his previous six outings.

Gibson's success this year has been fueled by his ability to tighten up in key situations. Opponents had been hitting .165 against him with runners in scoring position before going 5 for 14 in his last two games. He escaped a few jams Sunday against the Yankees before getting tagged for five runs in the sixth inning.

"Really kind of turned what I felt like was going to be a pretty decent day into a pretty sour day," he said.

The right-hander is 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA over his last three starts against Seattle, including a strong outing in a 4-2 win at Safeco Field on April 26. Gibson gave up two runs over seven-plus innings.

The Mariners are 1 for 18 with runners in scoring position against Gibson in four all-time meetings.

Mike Montgomery (4-4, 3.20) is 0-2 while allowing 16 earned runs over 20 1-3 innings in his last four starts, seeing his ERA nearly double from 1.62.

Home runs and walks have recently become concerns for the rookie left-hander. He has surrendered seven homers in his last five starts after allowing one through his first six, and he's walked nine in his last two after totaling 10 in his previous six games.

He limited Arizona to two earned runs Monday, but was taken deep twice and walked four over 6 2-3 innings in a 4-3 loss.

Brian Dozier is 7 for his last 19 off lefties with two homers and two doubles.

Miguel Sano, who homered Friday, has a 1.073 OPS during a seven-game hitting streak with two doubles, two homers and five walks.

Trevor Plouffe, tied for second on the team with 55 RBIs, is expected to return after missing two games for the birth of his son.

Preview: Nationals (54-47) at Mets (53-50)
                      Game: 2
                      Venue: Citi Field
                      Date: August 01, 2015 7:10 PM EDT

Loaded with talented young pitchers, it has been understood for months the New York Mets' plan was to add a proven hitter before the trade deadline to foster a playoff push.

Just before the deadline expired, they acquired a slugger they desperately needed.

Yoenis Cespedes will make his Mets debut Saturday night at Citi Field while Jacob deGrom takes the ball looking to help New York pull closer to the NL East-leading Washington Nationals.

While a rotation led by deGrom, Matt Harvey and Noah Syndergaard has helped the Mets (53-50) to the majors' third-best ERA at 3.26, their offensive ineptitude has hampered their playoff hopes. New York ranks last in the majors in batting average (.234) and runs per game (3.5) and is 29th with a .363 slugging percentage.

Two days after a deal for Milwaukee's Carlos Gomez fell through, the lineup got a significant boost Friday by acquiring Cespedes from Detroit for two minor league pitchers.

Cespedes hit .293 with 18 home runs, 28 doubles and 61 RBIs in 102 games with the Tigers and entered Friday with a 3.6 WAR - 1.3 better than top Mets position player Curtis Granderson.

'He's a very dynamic player,' New York general manager Sandy Alderson said. 'We think he's going to impact us in a number of different ways. But I think also just his presence in the lineup and his presence on the team will raise the energy level.'

Cespedes, who hit 32 homers to win the 2013 Home Run Derby at Citi Field, is slated to start in left field a day after the Mets' offense nearly wasted a Harvey gem. New York managed five hits in Friday's opener before Wilmer Flores led off the bottom of the 12th inning with a homer to give the Mets to a 2-1 win and within two games of the Nationals (54-47).

It's been an emotional few days for Flores, who was wiping away tears at shortstop Wednesday when he thought he'd been traded for Gomez.

'Words can't really describe what has been going through his head and us as a team the last couple days,' Harvey said.

Cespedes is one of the majors' top batters against right-handers, hitting .321 with 15 homers and an .898 OPS. However, right-handed hitters are batting .187 against rookie Joe Ross (2-3, 3.03 ERA) in his five starts.

DeGrom (10-6, 2.05) has the majors' third-best mark against righties, limiting them to a .176 average.

DeGrom also has baseball's fourth-best home ERA at 1.48 and is 2-0 with a 0.83 ERA in his last three starts. He outpitched the Los Angeles Dodgers' Zack Greinke on Sunday, yielding two hits over 7 2-3 scoreless innings, as the Mets ended Greinke's shutout string at 45 2-3 innings in a 3-2, 10-inning win.

In his previous start, deGrom allowed two runs and three hits while striking out eight over six innings in a 7-2 win at Washington on July 21. Wilson Ramos hit a two-run homer off the All-Star right-hander and is 3 for 8 against him this year. Bryce Harper and Yunel Escobar are each 3 for 7 with a double in 2015 matchups.

Harper was ejected in the 11th Friday for arguing a called third strike and was hitless in five at-bats after reaching base safely in a career-best 26 consecutive games. He is 3 for 20 at Citi Field this season, and manager Matt Williams was disappointed with Harper's decision to scream right in the face of plate umpire Jerry Meals in extra innings of a tie game.

'He needs to stay in the baseball game,' Williams said. 'We talked about it. We'll talk about it again.'

Ross opposed deGrom last week and yielded three runs and four hits in 6 1-3 innings. Flores had two of those hits.

Five days later Ross allowed three runs with seven strikeouts in six innings of a 3-1 loss at Pittsburgh. He served up a home run to Neil Walker - the only one he has surrendered in 129 batters faced. The 22-year-old has struck out 34 while walking three over 32 2-3 innings.

Preview: Pirates (60-42) at Reds (46-55)
                        Game: 3
                        Venue: Great American Ball Park
                        Date: August 01, 2015 7:10 PM EDT

If it weren't for poor results against the sub-.500 Cincinnati Reds, the Pittsburgh Pirates' wild-card lead would be even bigger.

So would Gerrit Cole's major league lead in wins.

The only team Cole has faced more than once and never beaten is the Reds, and they're responsible for three of the Pirates' only five losses in 20 games he's started this year entering Saturday night's matchup in Cincinnati.

Pittsburgh is 3-8 in the season series even after hanging on to win 5-4 on Friday. The Pirates (60-42) halted a six-game losing streak in Cincinnati as Mark Melancon narrowly escaped with his club-record 31st straight save, giving up two singles and a walk before Starling Marte threw out Brandon Phillips at the plate and made a game-ending diving catch on Marlon Byrd's line drive.

The Pirates finished an NL-best 17-9 in July and are four games better than any other wild-card contender.

Cole (14-4, 2.24 ERA) is a big reason why - no other pitcher has more than 12 victories - but half of his losses have come to the Reds (46-55). He's had a quality start in every game this season other than his three versus Cincinnati, posting a 6.75 ERA.

The Pirates have lost all five career starts Cole has made against the Reds as he's gone 0-3 with a 5.53 ERA, his highest versus any NL team. The only other one he hasn't defeated is Colorado, but the ace right-hander has had just one chance.

When he last faced Cincinnati, Cole was tagged for five runs and eight hits in 4 2-3 innings of a 5-2 loss June 24.

"I don't look and say, 'Hey, we're getting Gerrit Cole this time through; I sure am happy about that,'" Reds manager Bryan Price said following the game. "There's certain starters in the league where you're going, 'I hope that guy ends up pitching against us because we hit him really, really good.' But Gerrit Cole is not one of them."

Byrd and Todd Frazier are both 4 for 8 against him in 2015, with Byrd homering twice and Frazier hitting for the cycle. Byrd, 5 for 10 with two homers through two games of this series, is 6 for 13 lifetime against Cole and Phillips is 5 for 11.

"We know they're an offensive team, we know that they've got professional hitters," Cole said after losing to the Reds in June.

He yielded a run and struck out eight in 7 2-3 innings in Sunday's 3-1 victory over Washington, becoming the first Pittsburgh pitcher with 14 wins before August since Dock Ellis in 1971.

"Obviously, when we have Cole on the mound, we feel like two, three runs on most occasions is enough," second baseman Neil Walker told MLB's official website.

The Pirates may need another gem from Cole with their bullpen struggling. Besides Melancon looking shaky Friday, newly acquired Joakim Soria loaded the bases in the seventh and only escaped after snaring Brayan Pena's liner. Jared Hughes allowed an earned run for the first time since June 9, and Pirates relievers have a 6.23 ERA over the past eight games.

The Reds bullpen - and maybe starter Raisel Iglesias (1-3, 5.53) - face a tough task considering the Pirates have scored 37 runs in the fifth inning or later during a 6-2 stretch.

Fifteen of the 16 runs Iglesias has allowed in his last four starts have come after the first three innings. The rookie right-hander, who hasn't faced Pittsburgh, doesn't have a quality start in three outings since missing six weeks with a strained oblique.

Among his biggest concerns should be Jung Ho Kang, batting .467 in his last 12 games after delivering three doubles Friday. Andrew McCutchen hit his second homer in three games and is 6 for 13 in that span with five RBIs. Marte is batting .425 during a 10-game hitting streak.

Dallas Keuchel had one of his worst efforts of the season in his latest start but a return to Houston might be what he needs to put that behind quickly.

The Astros left-hander will try to extend his 24-inning home scoreless streak and become the AL's first 13-game winner Saturday night, but he will have to face the surging Arizona Diamondbacks.

Keuchel (12-5, 2.32 ERA) yielded four runs in the first inning in Sunday's 5-1 loss to Kansas City. He also gave up a season-high 10 hits in 6 2-3 innings and matched his most runs allowed this season with five.

Keuchel will try to shake that off by extending the longest home scoreless streak by an Astros pitcher since Hall of Famer Randy Johnson had a 36-inning run in 1998.

"It's going to be a fight the rest of the year, just because we're in the playoff hunt and every team's looking to put their best foot forward,' said Keuchel, whose team is two games ahead of Los Angeles in the AL West.

Keuchel, 10-0 with 1.33 ERA in his last 14 home games dating to last season, will also try to join Johnson as the only pitchers in team history with four consecutive scoreless home starts of seven innings or more Saturday. Johnson is also the last in the majors to accomplish that feat.

Keuchel will face a team that's won six in a row after a 6-4 victory in 10 innings in Friday's series opener. The Diamondbacks (50-51) rallied from a three-run deficit to send Houston (58-46) to just its second loss in 14 home games.

Welington Castillo and Jake Lamb had the final of Arizona's 14 hits with their back-to-back homers in the 10th. Arizona is batting .347 with 22 runs in its past three games after hitting .235 and averaging 3.2 runs in its previous 15.

Castillo's homer was his fourth in three games, and he'll try to add to that binge while helping the Diamondbacks extend their longest win streak since a nine-game run in August 2011.

Jeremy Hellickson (7-6, 4.60) will try to build on a superb July for a team that has posted a 1.90 ERA by its starting pitchers in the past eight games. The right-hander went 2-1 with a 1.88 ERA in four starts last month and lasted six innings in a 3-0 win over Milwaukee on Sunday.

"I don't know what the word is for it, but you really don't want to be the guy (that ends the streak)," Hellickson said.

Hellickson also got the benefit of making three home starts in July. He's 0-2 with a 7.58 ERA in his last four road games and had his most recent one - July 8 against Texas - cut short after allowing two runs in four innings because of a blister on his right thumb.

Hellickson will make his first start against Houston and will try to lead Arizona to its first five-game road win streak since May 6-18, 2013.

Keuchel is 1-1 with a 1.84 ERA in two career home starts against the Diamondbacks, tossing eight innings of one-run ball to beat them last June.

Preview: Rockies (43-58) at Cardinals (66-37)
                            Game: 3
                            Venue: Busch Stadium
                            Date: August 01, 2015 7:15 PM EDT

Matt Carpenter has been the star for the St. Louis Cardinals halfway through this four-game set with the lowly Colorado Rockies.

Lance Lynn could take over that role when the series continues Saturday night because of how he has dominated the Rockies.

Lynn's lowest ERA against an NL foe is versus Colorado, and he's been nearly unbeatable at home as he seeks to win a fourth straight Busch Stadium start.

Carpenter is 6 for 9 with three homers and five RBIs in this series, going deep twice in a 9-8 comeback win Thursday and adding his 13th of the season in Friday's 7-0 rout. The Cardinals have used 14-hit attacks both nights.

St. Louis (66-37) has captured 16 of 19 at home over Colorado with five straight wins as it turns to Lynn (8-5, 2.71 ERA), whose 1.77 home ERA is baseball's fifth-best mark.

The right-hander is 2-0 with a 1.37 ERA in four starts against Colorado with two scoreless efforts. The Rockies with the most plate appearances against him with seven apiece are DJ LeMahieu and Drew Stubbs, who have combined to go 1 for 13 with a walk and six strikeouts.

Lynn is 5-0 with a 1.13 ERA in his last seven home starts, posting a 0.86 ERA in three this month with 22 strikeouts in 21 innings. The one issue plaguing him is that he has baseball's fourth-worst run support average at 2.86.

That could be a problem Saturday since Carpenter could be cooled off because he's 0 for 9 with four strikeouts against Rockies starter Jorge De La Rosa (6-4, 5.03), who is 6-2 with a 3.51 ERA in his last eight starts against the Cardinals. The left-hander is 2-2 with a 3.04 ERA in four at the current Busch Stadium.

Mark Reynolds is 3 for 20 with 10 walks and 10 strikeouts versus De La Rosa and Jhonny Peralta is 5 for 24 with two homers.

De La Rosa has a 3.07 road ERA compared to 6.62 at home. He has yielded six runs in each of his last two starts and escaped without a decision both times, including Monday's 9-8 road loss to the Chicago Cubs.

"I was thinking too much and tried to do too much, and it put more pressure on me," he told MLB's official website. "But I'm better than the way I'm pitching right now."

The Rockies (43-58) are 1-4 on a seven-game trip even with LeMahieu batting .522 in his last six. Nolan Arenado, who leads the majors with 78 RBIs, is 1 for 9 in this series as part of a 5-for-36 slump.

Corey Dickerson is likely headed to the disabled list with two broken ribs suffered in the series opener.

Peralta is 4 for 8 in this series with four RBIs after homering Friday. Stephen Piscotty is batting .400 in the last six games, including a two-run double in a five-run sixth inning that opened a 4-0 lead.

"After striking out twice (earlier in the game), I told myself there are two ways to handle this," Piscotty said. "I could curl up and hide or embrace it as an opportunity to redeem myself."

St. Louis boasts the NL's best bullpen with a 2.32 ERA. That unit received another boost after the club acquired Jonathan Broxton from Milwaukee on Friday.

Cole Hamels has the potential to help the Texas Rangers for several years, but his focus is on the present.

Fresh off throwing a no-hitter, Hamels makes his Rangers debut Saturday night looking to fare better than he did against the visiting San Francisco Giants last month.

With Philadelphia mired in a miserable season and its future potentially bleak, Hamels prepared himself for a trade that involved eight players and was officially completed Friday. While the 2008 World Series MVP looks back fondly on his career with the Phillies that concluded with last Saturday's no-hitter at Wrigley Field, he's eager to move on.

'I'm excited to start the next chapter of my baseball life,' said Hamels, who has three years remaining on a $144 million, six-year contract that includes a $20 million club option for 2019 or a $6 million buyout. '(The Rangers) have a lot of great players and there's always a chance in that league. I don't think they are too far away, even this year.'

Hamels, 114-90 with a 3.30 ERA in his 10 seasons, wanted to be dealt to a contender, and at least publicly believes Texas (50-52) can make a push. The Rangers are seven games behind AL West-leading Houston but three out of the final wild-card spot.

They won for the seventh time in the last 10 games Friday by handing the Giants (56-46) their third defeat in the last 16, 6-3.

"There's still a chance, and I like knowing that," he told MLB's official website. "I know I can help be a part of that for the Rangers, and that's what I'll look to do.

"I just want to be a part of it and do what I can. My expectations are to go out there and win ballgames."

Hamels gutted out 129 pitches and struck out 13 during the historic 5-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs to improve to 6-7 with a 3.64 ERA in his 20th start. However, 15 days earlier he allowed season highs of nine runs and 12 hits in 3 1-3 innings of a 15-2 loss at San Francisco.

Hunter Pence hit a grand slam off Hamels in that contest and Buster Posey went 2 for 3 to raise his regular-season average against the left-hander to .524 (11 for 21).

Hamels leaves one of the majors' worst-hitting clubs to join a Rangers team that's averaged 5.8 runs while winning eight of the last 13 contests. Adrian Beltre and Elvis Andrus each hit two-run homers off Madison Bumgarner to help Texas to a third consecutive victory.

Andrus is batting .343 with 10 RBIs in his last 17 games.

Chris Heston (11-5, 3.14 ERA), who threw a no-hitter against the New York Mets on June 9, will try to end the Rangers' surge. This is the first time since 2010 when Matt Garza faced Dallas Braden and Edwin Jackson opposed Roy Halladay that two pitchers who tossed no-hitters in a season squared off in that same year.

Looking to win a fourth straight start, Heston is 5-0 with a 2.11 ERA in his last seven starts and allowed two runs over 28 1-3 innings of his last four.

"He's just been unbelievable to watch this year," teammate Matt Duffy said after the right-hander gave up two of those runs in seven innings of Monday's 4-2 win over Milwaukee.

Tempers flared and the benches cleared Friday after an agitated Bumgarner shouted something toward the Rangers bench as the fourth inning ended on Delino DeShields' pop up. No punches were thrown and there were no ejections.

                                Game: 3
                                Venue: O.co Coliseum

Though the Cleveland Indians were sellers prior to the trade deadline, they've hardly given up hope this season.

They can record a fourth consecutive victory by extending the Oakland Athletics' current struggles Saturday night at the Coliseum.

Cleveland (48-54) is last in the AL Central and dealt veterans David Murphy, Brandon Moss and Marc Rzepczynski this week, but remains optimistic while sitting five games out of the final wild-card spot.

"Things haven't gone the way we've wanted them to so far, but I don't think just because we traded a (few) guys away that it means we've given up on this year," ace Corey Kluber told MLB's official website.

The Indians have built some momentum by winning three straight since losing the first six of a seven-game homestand. Danny Salazar allowed Oakland's only hit over eight innings, Lonnie Chisenhall had three hits and Michael Bourn delivered a tiebreaking double in the ninth of Friday's 2-1 victory.

'This team has so much energy, and we're having fun out there,' Salazar said

While Cleveland's hurt itself with a 20-32 home record, it is 28-22 on the road and won 10 of the last 14 away from Progressive Field. The Indians have held Oakland (45-59) to two runs and three hits in the first two of this set.

"I don't know how many times we've said it, but it kind of starts with pitching," manager Terry Francona said. "If you can't pitch, you're in real trouble."

Cody Anderson (2-2, 3.26 ERA) proved to be a pleasant surprise for Francona after becoming the first pitcher since 1914 to last at least 6 2-3 innings and allow one or no runs in each of his first four career starts. However, the right-hander has yielded 11 runs and 18 hits over 8 1-3 innings to go 0-1 in his last two.

He gave up seven runs and eight hits in 5 2-3 innings of Monday's 9-4 loss to Kansas City.

"I just didn't make my pitches down in the zone," said Anderson, who grew up some five hours northwest of the Bay Area in Quincy, Calif.

He'll face an Oakland club that's scored 20 runs while batting .189 with three homers over a 1-7 stretch. Eric Sogard, Billy Burns and Josh Reddick have accounted for all the team's hits in this series.

'You're going to go through stretches when you struggle offensively,' manager Bob Melvin said. 'You hope you time it right when you get a good pitching effort, you also have the offense.'

All-Star catcher Stephen Vogt is 0 for 19 in his last six games after going hitless in three at-bats Friday.

Acquired in Tuesday's deal that sent the versatile Ben Zobrist to the Royals, Aaron Brooks (0-0, 6.23) makes his fifth career appearance and second start in his Oakland debut. He allowed three runs and six hits in 4 1-3 innings of two relief outings this season but went 6-4 with a 3.72 ERA in 17 starts for Triple-A Omaha.

"I think getting the ball right away, coming from Triple-A straight here, is a big confidence boost and something I've got to take advantage of," said the Los Angeles area native who is expected to have plenty of family and friends on hand.

Bourn is 8 for 14 with four stolen bases in the last four games.
