    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Over/under win totals for NFL teams this season:

5.5-- Jaguars/Raiders/Titans-- Lowest totals in league.

11-- Packers/Seahawks-- Highest totals in league.

8.5-- Arizona, under -$120-- Need Palmer to stay healthy.

10-- Denver, over -$135-- Patched-together OL better keep #18 healthy.

8.5-- Steelers 8.5, over -$125-- Lot of changes on their defense.

9.5-- Eagles-- Lot of faith in oft-injured Sam Bradford.

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind......

    13) Giants traded for Mike Leake late Thursday night, as contenders begin to jockey for position in the pennant race. Trade deadline is 4pm today; could be quiet, could be a flurry of activity. Non-contenders are trying hard to dump salary.

    12) Toronto traded for David Price; he will be a free agent this winter and isn't likely to re-sign with Toronto, so Dodgers will be in play for him this winter.

    11) Milwaukee was intent on trading Carlos Gomez; he is now an Astro, after the Mets chickened out of a deal Wednesday night. Watching Brewers a lot on TV because Gomez is on my fantasy team, could tell Milwaukee wanted to find a way to keep Gerardo Parra and this trade allows that to happen.

    10) Astros 3, Angels 0-- Catcher Jason Castro was 6-54 with men in scoring position this year, until his walk-off HR gave Houston a series sweep and the lead in AL West. Scott Kazmir hasn't allowed a run in his first two Houston starts.

    9) Houston is 36-17 at home, 9-3 oerall since All-Star break. Now their roster is way better than it was in first half of the season.

    8) Angels got the draft pick they used on Mike Trout when Mark Teixeira bolted the Halos in free agency. Sometimes it is good when players leave your team.

    7) White Sox are playing better because they're hitting better early in games; they have scored 18 first-inning runs in their last six games.

    6) Dodgers ate $43M in salaries in that 13-player trade, to acquire Wood/Latos to fortify their starting rotation. Dodgers have a lot of money to spend.

    5) Weird stat: Ichiro Suzuki has come to plate 251 times this season but has only one double. One. He has three triples and a homer, but only one double????

    4) Pro golfer Dottie Pepper posted a Sports Illustrated cover from 1968 on Twitter Thursday, with five prospects from 1968, Johnny Bench being the famous guy in the picture, but a prospect from Detroit in the picture is close to Pepper's heart-- her father Don, who was 0-3 at the plate in four games with the Tigers in 1966.

    3) 13 of 14 SEC teams got at least one vote in the first USA Today top 25 football vote, Vanderbilt being the one team that did not.

    2) Texas 7, Bronx 6-- Someday they're going to make a movie on Josh Hamilton's life and it is going to be a hell of a movie, both on field and off field. He won this game in ninth inning with a single and also hit a 3-run homer earlier in the game.

    1) Royals are 15-3 this season in games that were tied after the 5th inning; Rangers are 8-2, and the Twins are 3-12. That says more about bullpens than anything else.

1a) I joked earlier this week about Ben Carson running for President-- I had no idea who the guy is, so I looked him up. Mr Carson is a 63-year old retired neurosurgeon who is the first surgeon to separate twins who were conjoined at the head. Smart guy.

He has written six books; they made a TV movie about him in 2009, with Cuba Gooding Jr playing Mr Carson. Very interesting guy and now I know who he is.

            Friday, July 31

Hutchinson a different pitcher in Toronto

Drew Hutchinson may have the most obtuse home/road splits in the MLB this season, but lucky for Blue Jays bettors the pitcher will be at the Rogers Centre Friday.

On the home mound, Hutch is 7-1 with a 2.21 ERA in nine starts. The Jays have reveled in this and have gone 7-2 during Hutchinson's home starts.

When away from the '6ix,' Hutchinson has a 9.00 ERA in 11 starts with the Jays going 6-5.

The Blue Jays are currently +109 when they host the Royals Friday.

Jungmann strong at home, Brewers not supplying runs

Taylor Jungmann may only has a few starts in Milwaukee under his belt this season, but the pitcher has shown to like it there. Jungmann has posted a 1.59 ERA and has not allowed a home run in three starts at Miller Park.

Despite those strong starts, the Brewers are just 1-2 in the games Jungmann starts at home. In those two losses the Brew Crew amassed five hits and no runs.

Milwaukee is currently -106 when they host the Cubs Friday.

Harvey to face Nationals for fourth time this season

Matt Harvey will be very familiar with his opponents Friday as the New York Mets will meet the Washington Nationals for the fourth time this season with the rightie on the mound.

Harvey is 2-1 with a 1.80 ERA with Nats batters hitting just .197 this season. However, Harvey is coming off his worst start against the team this season as he gave up four runs to the Nationals in his second-to-last start.

The Mets are currently -125 when they host the Nationals Friday

Reds send struggling Lorenzen to the mound

Michael Lorenzen will attempt to end July on a high note as the rookie pitcher has struggled so far this month. Lorenzen is 0-3 with a 8.83 ERA in his four starts during the month of July.

Not surprisingly, the Cincinnati Reds have found themselves coming out on the losing ends of those contests as they have gone 1-3 in those games.

The Reds are currently +111 when they host the Pittsburgh Pirates Friday.

Cueto set to face Jays in Royals debut

TORONTO -- Johnny Cueto, the pitcher who could put the Kansas City Royals over the top in their quest for a World Series championship, will make his debut for his new team Friday.

The right-hander, who was obtained from the Cincinnati Reds for three pitching prospects Sunday, will start against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.

He was 7-6 with a 2.62 ERA with the Reds this season.

Cueto gives the Royals, who lost the 2014 World Series in seven games to the San Francisco Giants, the ace they needed after losing right-hander James Shields as a free agent in the offseason.

Over continues to cash when the Red Sox play

The Boston Red Sox have now hit the over in five consecutive games. Those five games have seen the Sox average 6.6 runs per game while allowing 6.2 runs.

Boston has been nearly split for total bettors this season, with the team carrying a 50-49-4 over/under mark this season to date.

Currently 8.5 is the total when the Sox host the Tampa Bay Rays Friday.

Braves' non-existent offense has the under cashing

The Atlanta Braves offense is no good, but bettors have been able to use that inability to swing a bat with the team going under in seven of their past eight contests.

During those eight games the Braves have scored a combined 11 runs and have been shutout (2) more times than they've won (1).

The Braves will be back in Citizen Bank Park Friday to face the Phillies.

Hey UDog--Ben Carson sounds like a guy who ought to be smart enough not to run for President. I don't know how anybody can think they can straighten up this mess.

He probably thinks he can straighten out the health care problems but there's a lot more to that job than that.

I hate to say it, RS, but I'm just suspicious of anyone who wants that job these days. This guy is a humanitarian, though, and his motives are probably good.

                    Friday, July 31

Yankees having no issues cashing behind Eovaldi

The New York Yankees have been money behind Nathan Eovaldi lately, cashing tickets in six out of the last seven times he's taken the hill.

Eovaldi is slated to get the ball Friday versus Carlos Rodon and the Chicago White Sox.

Sportsbooks are currently offering the Bronx Bombers in the -120 ballpark with a total of 8.5.

One-sided affairs between Reds-Pirates has over cashing

The past five games between the Cincinnati Reds and the Pittsburgh Pirates have topped the closing total. However, most of those games have been blowouts than hotly contested slugfests.

The winning team in those five games (Reds three wins, Pirates twice) has averaged 7.8 runs with the losing team tallying 3.8.

The current total is set at 8.5 when the teams meet Friday.
