Sparks easily going under totals recently

The Los Angeles Sparks have gone under the closing total in six of their past seven games.

The Sparks and their opponents have combined for an average 137.7 points per game during that span, while facing an average closing spread of 151.

The Sparks will visit the Chicago Sky Friday, with the total currently set at 161.

Despite losing efforts, Sun big faves against Storm

The Connecticut Sun have dropped seven of their past eight contests straight-up (3-5 ATS), but are still currently -7 home faves Friday.

The Sun who have an average scoring margin of -6.5 during that span were dogs in all but two of their past eight.

Connecticut hosts the lowly Seattle Storm (5-14 SU, 10-9 ATS) Friday.

          Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Over/under win totals for NFL teams this season:

5.5-- Jaguars/Raiders/Titans-- Lowest totals in league.

11-- Packers/Seahawks-- Highest totals in league.

8.5-- Arizona, under -$120-- Need Palmer to stay healthy.

10-- Denver, over -$135-- Patched-together OL better keep #18 healthy.

8.5-- Steelers 8.5, over -$125-- Lot of changes on their defense.

9.5-- Eagles-- Lot of faith in oft-injured Sam Bradford.

          **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind......

          13) Giants traded for Mike Leake late Thursday night, as contenders begin to jockey for position in the pennant race. Trade deadline is 4pm today; could be quiet, could be a flurry of activity. Non-contenders are trying hard to dump salary.

          12) Toronto traded for David Price; he will be a free agent this winter and isn't likely to re-sign with Toronto, so Dodgers will be in play for him this winter.

          11) Milwaukee was intent on trading Carlos Gomez; he is now an Astro, after the Mets chickened out of a deal Wednesday night. Watching Brewers a lot on TV because Gomez is on my fantasy team, could tell Milwaukee wanted to find a way to keep Gerardo Parra and this trade allows that to happen.

          10) Astros 3, Angels 0-- Catcher Jason Castro was 6-54 with men in scoring position this year, until his walk-off HR gave Houston a series sweep and the lead in AL West. Scott Kazmir hasn't allowed a run in his first two Houston starts.

          9) Houston is 36-17 at home, 9-3 oerall since All-Star break. Now their roster is way better than it was in first half of the season.

          8) Angels got the draft pick they used on Mike Trout when Mark Teixeira bolted the Halos in free agency. Sometimes it is good when players leave your team.

          7) White Sox are playing better because they're hitting better early in games; they have scored 18 first-inning runs in their last six games.

          6) Dodgers ate $43M in salaries in that 13-player trade, to acquire Wood/Latos to fortify their starting rotation. Dodgers have a lot of money to spend.

          5) Weird stat: Ichiro Suzuki has come to plate 251 times this season but has only one double. One. He has three triples and a homer, but only one double????

          4) Pro golfer Dottie Pepper posted a Sports Illustrated cover from 1968 on Twitter Thursday, with five prospects from 1968, Johnny Bench being the famous guy in the picture, but a prospect from Detroit in the picture is close to Pepper's heart-- her father Don, who was 0-3 at the plate in four games with the Tigers in 1966.

          3) 13 of 14 SEC teams got at least one vote in the first USA Today top 25 football vote, Vanderbilt being the one team that did not.

          2) Texas 7, Bronx 6-- Someday they're going to make a movie on Josh Hamilton's life and it is going to be a hell of a movie, both on field and off field. He won this game in ninth inning with a single and also hit a 3-run homer earlier in the game.

          1) Royals are 15-3 this season in games that were tied after the 5th inning; Rangers are 8-2, and the Twins are 3-12. That says more about bullpens than anything else.

1a) I joked earlier this week about Ben Carson running for President-- I had no idea who the guy is, so I looked him up. Mr Carson is a 63-year old retired neurosurgeon who is the first surgeon to separate twins who were conjoined at the head. Smart guy.

He has written six books; they made a TV movie about him in 2009, with Cuba Gooding Jr playing Mr Carson. Very interesting guy and now I know who he is.

Preview: Storm (5-14) at Sun (8-8)

            Date: July 31, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

The Connecticut Sun's struggles at home have contributed to them fading following a surprisingly strong start without Chiney Ogwumike.

Seattle's inability to win on the road is the main reason the Storm sit near the bottom of the Western Conference.

Slumping Connecticut looks to snap a four-game home losing streak while dealing Seattle an eighth consecutive road loss Friday night.

Ogwumike was named the league's rookie of the year last season, but she had microfracture surgery on her right knee in January and was ruled out for 2015. That didn't stop the Sun from getting off to a 7-1 start behind the strong play of All-Stars Alex Bentley and Kelsey Bone.

Connecticut (8-8), though, has dropped seven of eight and at 3-5 is the only team in the East with a losing record at home. It fell 75-73 to visiting Indiana on Tuesday after Tamika Catchings scored the tiebreaking bucket with six seconds remaining.

Bone finished with 14 points while Alyssa Thomas and Camille Little added 10 apiece, but Bentley finished with a season-low three as she battled an illness.

Bentley ranks among the league's scoring leaders at 15.9 points per game for the Sun, who have trailed at the end of the first quarter in six straight.

"(Falling behind early has) been a pattern that we've had," guard Jasmine Thomas said. "We're just waiting for us to get out of it and turn it around. We just have to start more intense, especially on the defensive end.

"You can't play a whole season from behind. It takes a lot out of you."

The Storm (5-14) are plenty familiar with that trend. They fell behind by 13 after one before their rally fell short in an 81-77 loss to New York that snapped a two-game winning streak, then trailed by 20 at the start of the second in Wednesday's 87-74 loss to Washington to open a six-game road stretch.

Sue Bird and Jewell Loyd both shot 2 of 7 from the field and combined for nine points. Abby Bishop came off the bench and scored 17 for the Storm, who have dropped seven straight on the road and are 1-9 away from home.

"For us, it's just about taking one game at a time but also learning from each game," Bishop told the team's official website. "We know that playing on the road is obviously a lot tougher than playing at home. I think that's going to be the really big focus for the next game, is having a good start. That's going to be really important for us for these next five games."

The Storm started well in the first meeting with Connecticut on June 16, then fell apart. Seattle led by two after the first before the Sun outscored the Storm 24-11 in the second on their way to a 79-58 road victory.

Bentley and Little scored 12 points apiece while Bird finished 3 of 11 from the field and scored eight.

Preview: Dream (7-11) at Lynx (13-4)

              Date: July 31, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

The Minnesota Lynx tried for months to acquire Sylvia Fowles in hopes of pairing her in the frontcourt with star Maya Moore before getting the help they needed when the Atlanta Dream swooped in to complete a three-team trade.

The deal should also give Reshanda Gray and Damiris Dantas larger roles with their new club, and they'll return to Minnesota and face their former team Friday night looking to help the Dream avoid a fourth straight loss.

Fowles sat out the first half of the season after demanding a trade out of Chicago and finally got her wish Monday. The Dream sent veteran Erika de Souza to the Sky and acquired Gray, Dantas and next year's first-round pick from the Lynx.

Fowles was in the starting lineup Wednesday and finished with 11 points, five rebounds and three steals to help Minnesota (13-4) improve the league's best record with an 82-76 win over Los Angeles.

"I was a little bit anxious and nervous at the same time," she said. "I think the first quarter, I got a lot of the jitters out. The second quarter, I started getting more into a groove. I'm excited to play with this group of young women and it was fun, so I really can't complain."

Moore scored 27 points, her franchise-record ninth game in a row netting at least 20 and four shy of Diana Taurasi's league record of 13 in 2006-07. Lindsay Whalen scored 24 in her return from a one-game absence due to an eye injury for the Lynx, who couldn't find much room in their deep frontcourt for Dantas or Gray.

Dantas had six points and seven rebounds after starting and playing a team-high 33 minutes Wednesday, but the Dream (7-11) fell 102-85 at San Antonio. Gray, a rookie who scored six points in 10 games for Minnesota in very limited time, came off the bench and finished 5 of 7 from the field with 13 points.

Atlanta might have been happy with the play of its new acquisitions, but not much else went its way. Coach Michael Cooper again tinkered with his lineup, with the WNBA's third-leading scorer Angel McCoughtry coming off the bench for 14 points in 20 minutes.

Matee Ajavon had 13 points and Shoni Schimmel 12, both in reserve roles.

The main issues, though, were on the defensive end. The Dream allowed San Antonio to shoot 53.8 percent and gave up their highest point total since losing 112-108 to the Lynx in double-overtime on July 22 of last year.

The Dream, who sit in last place and are the only Eastern Conference team with double-digit losses, are 1-4 entering the finale of a six-game road stretch.

"We can't have a game like this. It's unacceptable," McCoughtry said. "We have to come with more energy and focus. We have more games, so we're going to bounce back."

McCoughtry scored 21 points in that thrilling loss to Minnesota in the last meeting, but it wasn't nearly enough to help overcome Moore's career-high 48, which stand as the second-most in league history behind Riquna Williams' 51 in 2013.

Preview: Sparks (3-14) at Sky (11-7)

                Date: July 31, 2015 8:30 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Sparks didn't turn their season around with the return of Candace Parker, but the two-time MVP showed how many fronts she could contribute on against the top team in the league.

It could take more offense from her to help get the Sparks back on track Friday night in Chicago against the high-scoring Sky.

Parker made her 2015 debut in Wednesday's 82-76 loss in Minnesota and wasn't far off a triple-double with 12 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. The 2008 and '13 MVP missed the start of the season while resting after leading the Sparks (3-14) in scoring (19.4) and assists (4.3) in 2014.

"I just treated it like I treated any other game," Parker said. "Obviously a little bit more excited, it was a little bit tougher to take a pregame nap, but I'm excited to be back. It wasn't the outcome we expected, but we can build off this."

The return might have overshadowed Jantel Lavender's 15-point, 10-rebound effort. The Los Angeles center has three double-doubles in four games while averaging 16.5 points and 9.7 rebounds. That boosts her season averages to 14.9 and 9.1 after topping out in the first four years of her career at 11.9 and 6.3 last season.

Nevertheless, it was their second straight loss and seventh in eight games, and offense has been the problem in the last seven with the Sparks never topping the 76-point output they achieved with Parker.

That could be particularly problematic against the Sky (11-7), who average a league-high 85.8 points, which wasn't enough in Tuesday's 89-87 overtime loss in Phoenix.

Elena Delle Donne had 32 points and is averaging 29.3 in her last three games. Cappie Pondexter added 13, but the guard is shooting 31.1 percent in her last four. Reserve guard Allie Quigley has helped balance that by averaging 16.0 points in her last five contests.

"I'm really happy with our offense. I feel like any given night somebody can step up and go off," Delle Donne told the team's official website.

Erika de Souza's been added to that list and will make her home debut. The center was limited to four points on 2-of-8 shooting in 14 minutes off the bench after being acquired in a three-team deal with Atlanta and Minnesota on Monday.

The Sky return home to a five-game winning streak, which is their top run since opening the 2013 season 5-0 in Rosemont.

The teams have split six games over the past three seasons, and the Sky managed a 90-83 win in Los Angeles in the last meeting July 1, 2014, despite being without Delle Donne.

In the previous clash - a 102-88 win for the Sparks on June 6, 2014 - Delle Donne scored a then-career high 33. Parker is averaging 20.0 points in the last four meetings.

                  Mystics-Stars Preview

The Washington Mystics are the hottest team in the WNBA, and their winning streak could last through the first week of August if they're able to overcome the San Antonio Stars' home success.

The teams conclude July on Friday night in San Antonio, where the Mystics have earned victories the last two seasons and will try for their longest win streak in five years.

Washington (10-6) extended its run to four with Wednesday's 87-74 win behind 20 points from Ivory Latta, who shot 7 of 9. The guard has averaged 14.7 points while reaching double figures in three straight games, going 9 of 17 from 3-point range. She came off the bench for the fourth straight game after starting the previous 12.

"I'm out here to do my job. If they need me to bring energy off the bench then that's what I'm going to do," Latta told the team's official website. "That's my job so that's what I'm going to do."

Kia Vaughn returned from a concussion and had eight points in 15 minutes with a game-high plus-23 rating.

"I thought (Kia) was great for her first game," said coach Mike Thibault, who wasn't around when the franchise last won five straight as part of a six-game run to conclude the 2010 regular season. "I mean she obviously takes up size in the lane, I think she bothered people, physical on the boards. ... The hardest part now is figuring out minutes for everybody."

The scoring performances complement impressive recent defensive efforts as Washington has allowed 68.5 points per game during the win streak. The Stars, though, could challenge that.

The Mystics have won three of four in the series over the last two seasons. The teams meet twice in the next six days with each club sandwiching in another contest.

San Antonio (6-12) also came out of the All-Star break in impressive fashion, defeating Atlanta 102-85 at home Wednesday to give it a scoring average of 88.0 over the last three games. The Stars, 0-9 on the road, have won six straight at home and have two games remaining on a four-game homestand. They last took seven straight in San Antonio in a nine-game run June 1-Aug. 25, 2012.

The most recent win came without Danielle Adams, who was handed a three-game suspension without pay for an unspecified violation of the league's anti-drug program.

Kayla McBride again stepped up and scored 25 points, while fellow All-Star Danielle Robinson had 12 assists. McBride has averaged 20.7 points in her last three home games, though Robinson scored only 10 after averaging 16.3 in her previous four.

"I think we're just starting to work with each other more," McBride said. "... We've been through a lot with injuries and things like, so yeah, it's good to see us come together now."
