Preview: Yankees (56-42) at Rangers (47-51)
    Game: 2
Venue: Globe Life Park in Arlington
    Date: July 28, 2015 8:05 PM EDT

The New York Yankees have won five straight against left-handed starters and face another one Tuesday night in Martin Perez.

That should ensure that Alex Rodriguez will remain in the lineup based on the way he has been taking southpaws deep.

The 40-year-old Rodriguez has homered four times in his last two games as he faces Perez for the first time when the Yankees and Rangers continue a four-game series in Arlington.

New York (56-42) improved to 17-11 versus left-handed starters by defeating Matt Harrison in Monday's 6-2 victory. Didi Gregorius was 3 for 4 with a homer and a career-high four RBIs.

Gregorius is 11 for 31 with four homers and 11 RBIs against Texas.

"A guy that we've scuffled with getting out and we've got to find a way to pitch him differently," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said.

Rodriguez also took Harrison deep as he returned to the lineup on his 40th birthday after sitting out Sunday's 7-2 win at Minnesota. He's the fourth player in major league history to homer both as a teenager and in his 40s.

'It's amazing, hitting one as a teenager and hitting one here today,' Rodriguez said. 'A lot has happened, and I'm just happy to be here.'

Rodriguez homered three times in his previous game - all off left-handers.

Now he'll face Perez (0-1, 4.91 ERA), who makes his first home start and third since returning from Tommy John surgery as he searches for his first win since April 23, 2014. Perez was encouraged after surrendering four runs in six innings of Wednesday's 10-8 victory at Colorado.

"I made good pitches," Perez said. "They didn't hit the ball hard, just ground balls and pop-ups. That's part of the game."

Though Perez has never faced the Yankees, Chris Young is 3 for 6 against him. Young will likely start again thanks to a .362 average against lefties.

New York will decide whether Jacoby Ellsbury and Stephen Drew will return to the starting lineup after both began Monday on the bench. Ellsbury, who is 1 for 17 off lefties since the All-Star break, was out with a sore shoulder though he entered as a defensive replacement.

Since the Yankees do not have an off day on this 10-game trip and wanted to give extra rest to starters Masahiro Tanaka and Michael Pineda, they needed a starter for this contest. Manager Joe Girardi will give journeyman Chris Capuano (0-4, 5.64) his first start since May 29.

Capuano went 0-3 with a 6.39 ERA in three May starts before moving to the bullpen, where he has a 5.09 ERA in 12 appearances. Prince Fielder is 4 for 11 with two homers off the left-hander while Adrian Beltre is 2 for 10.

Texas (47-51) has dropped consecutive games after a four-game win streak, falling for the 11th time in 12 home games. The Rangers have baseball's worst home mark at 16-27.

"I don't believe it's a mental thing, these guys are all professional players, they're going to show up in their own ballpark, in their own lockers, in their own uniforms, their home uniforms in front of their fans and come out and play," Banister said. "It's not anything other than that."

Fielder is batting .412 with five homers and 18 RBIs in a 12-game hitting streak against New York.

Preview: Diamondbacks (47-51) at Mariners (46-54)
      Game: 2
      Venue: Safeco Field
      Date: July 28, 2015 10:10 PM EDT

The Arizona Diamondbacks got some key at-bats from players with Seattle ties in capturing the opener of a three-game road series with the Mariners.

Now they are ready to show off a youngster they are counting on for a bright future.

Zack Godley makes his first road start after an impressive debut for the Diamondbacks, who seek a fourth straight win Tuesday night.

There's not much on the line in this series of clubs looking to the future, though Jake Lamb and Welington Castillo both had their own incentive in returns to Seattle in Monday's 4-3, 10-inning victory.

Lamb, a Seattle native who attended the University of Washington, delivered the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the 10th in his first game against the team he grew up rooting for.

'I was pretty nervous that first inning, but after that first (at-bat) I took some good pitches, got the walk and that kind of locked me in,' Lamb said. 'It slowed down and I was able to really enjoy the moment and that was awesome.'

Earlier in the contest, Castillo homered against the club that acquired him from the Chicago Cubs on May 19 before trading him to Arizona (47-51) on June 3 for Mark Trumbo. Trumbo went 3 for 4 against the club he spent all of last season with before being dealt.

Godley became the first pitcher since 1900 to throw at least six scoreless innings with no walks and strike out seven or more in his major league debut Thursday in an 8-3 win over Milwaukee. His seven strikeouts over six innings were the most in a big league debut for the Diamondbacks since Max Scherzer struck out that many in relief April 29, 2008.

"I love the intensity," manager Chip Hale said. "That's one of the things we liked about him. He fit right in and didn't seem to be bothered by anything."

      The 25-year-old right-hander was previously at Class A Visalia and Double-A Mobile, going 9-4 with a 2.72 ERA in 17 starts - 15 games.

Robinson Cano continued his surge for Seattle (46-54) as he went 2 for 3 with his 11th home run. The second baseman is batting .406 with three homers and eight RBIs in an eight-game hitting streak.

The Mariners trailed 3-0 after two innings before Mike Zunino's tying, two-out RBI single in the ninth. Zunino entered the contest with baseball's worst average among qualifying players at .179.

"We just couldn't get that one hit to put us over the hump but our guys battled back," manager Lloyd McClendon said.

Zunino will likely be the batterymate for starter Hisashi Iwakuma (2-1, 4.50), who allowed two runs with a season-high seven strikeouts in seven innings in Thursday's 3-2, 12-inning victory at Detroit. Iwakuma is 2-0 with a 3.16 ERA in four starts since being activated off the disabled list July 6.

The right-hander has made two relief appearances against the Diamondbacks. He is 3-1 with a 3.21 ERA in seven interleague starts, posting a 5.66 ERA at home compared to 1.33 on the road.

Arizona may want to start Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who was activated Monday and is 4 for 5 against Iwakuma.

NL batting leader Paul Goldschmidt homered to extend his hitting streak to nine games with a .440 average and .615 on-base percentage. He drew three walks to bring his major league-high total to 82.

MLB roundup: A-Rod homers on 40th birthday

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Alex Rodriguez hit a home run on his 40th birthday, and Didi Gregorius set a career high with four RBIs as the New York Yankees pounded the Texas Rangers 6-2 Monday night.

Rodriguez provided an insurance run in the sixth inning with his solo homer to right. The home run off Texas starter Matt Harrison made Rodriguez just the fourth player in the majors to homer in his teens and his 40s.

Gregorius, who matched his career high with three hits, tied the game at 2-2 with a two-run home run off Harrison in the second inning and then broke it open with a two-run single to right in the seventh.

The big night from Gregorius helped make a winner out of Ivan Nova, who allowed two runs in the second inning but that was it in his five innings. Nova allowed five hits and struck out two before turning the game over to the New York bullpen, which produced four hitless innings.

        Orioles 2, Braves 1 (11 innings)

BALTIMORE -- Matt Wieters led off the bottom of the 11th with a home run that gave Baltimore a victory over Atlanta.

Wieters crushed a 1-0 pitch from Luis Avilan (2-4) to center to snap a 1-1 tie and give the Orioles their third straight victory. Right-hander Brad Brach (4-2) got the victory thanks to a scoreless 11th.

Atlanta took a 1-0 lead in the top of the ninth on Adonis Garcia's solo homer off Zach Britton, but Baltimore answered in the bottom half against Jim Johnson. Singles by Adam Jones and Wieters put runners on the corners, and J.J. Hardy lined a game-tying sacrifice fly to left.

        Rays 5, Tigers 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Nathan Karns threw six-plus innings of one-run ball, and Curt Casali hit two home runs, leading Tampa Bay past Detroit.

The Rays went 13 consecutive games without scoring more than four runs, but they ended that streak when Casali hit a two-run home run in the eighth, his fourth in his past six games.

Detroit was held to two runs or fewer for the fourth time in five games, and it lost all four of those contests.

        Royals 9, Indians 4

CLEVELAND -- Eric Hosmer had three hits, including a home run, and four RBIs, and Kendrys Morales added three hits and three RBIs as Kansas City routed Cleveland.

Hosmer's three-run home run in the first inning off Cody Anderson set the tone, and the Royals rolled over the reeling Indians. Cleveland lost its fifth in a row and was outscored 35-9 in the five games.

Omar Infante also homered, his first of the year for the Royals, who became the first team in the American League to reach 60 wins.

        Cardinals 4, Reds 1

ST. LOUIS -- Grinding his way through seven innings Monday night, Lance Lynn helped St. Louis earn its eighth win in 10 games since the All-Star break.

Kolten Wong provided all the backing Lynn needed with a fourth-inning grand slam.

Lynn (8-5) gave up five hits and a run, walking three and striking out five in his 13th quality start out of 19 outings. He threw 115 pitches, the last one retiring All-Star Todd Frazier on a foulout to first with two runners on to end the seventh as Frazier slammed his bat in frustration.

White Sox 10, Red Sox 8

BOSTON -- Adam Eaton hit a game-opening triple and collected three hits and a pair of RBIs as Chicago topped Boston.

Eaton, who missed Sunday's finale in Cleveland with a shoulder injury, tied the game at 7-7 with a double in the sixth and singled home the go-ahead run an inning later.

Chicago won its fourth straight and pounded out 15 hits while feasting on a shaky start from Red Sox right-hander Joe Kelly, who didn't make it out of the third inning.

        Cubs 9, Rockies 8

CHICAGO -- Kris Bryant hit a two-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth as Chicago rallied to beat Colorado.

Bryant's 14th home run of the season, off John Axford (3-4), drove in Dexter Fowler with two outs.

Colorado's Carlos Gonzalez hit two home runs, including a go-ahead two-run shot in the top of the ninth as the Rockies jumped to a temporary 8-7 lead. Chicago led 7-4 after eight innings.

        Giants 4, Brewers 2

SAN FRANCISCO -- Brandon Crawford smacked his 15th home run, and rookie Chris Heston earned his 11th win, leading San Francisco past Milwaukee.

Crawford took over the team lead in home runs during a three-run fourth inning. The shortstop's two-run shot propelled the Giants to their sixth consecutive win, their seventh in a row over the Brewers.

Brandon Belt and Gregor Blanco also drove in runs for the Giants, who fielded their projected Opening Day starting lineup for the first time all season with the reinstatement of Nori Aoki from the disabled list. Aoki went 0-for-3 in his first outing since breaking his leg on June 20.

        Diamondbacks 4, Mariners 3 (10 innings)

SEATTLE -- Jake Lamb, a native of Seattle who played at nearby University of Washington, delivered the game-winning RBI with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th as Arizona topped Seattle.

Oliver Perez (2-1) earned the win after blowing the save in the bottom of the ninth, while Andrew Chafin earned his second save of the season with a scoreless 10th.

Mike Zunino sent the game into extra innings with a two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. That came off Perez, who was trying to earn his first save since 2013 as Diamondbacks closer Brad Ziegler took the night off after appearing in three consecutive games.

Marlins backers profiting with Fernandez at home

History shows Miami Marlins righty Jose Fernandez loves pitching in the friendly confines of Marlins Park.

The Fish are 19-3 in Fernandez's last 22 home starts. He's once again listed as the probable starter at home against Jordan Zimmermann and the Washington Nationals Tuesday.

Miami is presently in the -125 ballpark at sportsbooks.

Teheran, Braves cashing Overs on the road

In Julio Teheran's last nine outings on the road, the Over is a perfect 9-0.

The Atlanta right-hander is the probable starter Tuesday when the Braves take on Ubaldo Jimenez and the Orioles in Maryland.

At the time of writing, the total for the game was off the board.

A's trade RHP Clippard to Mets

The Oakland Athletics traded right-handed reliever Tyler Clippard to the New York Mets for minor-league right-hander Casey Meisner on Monday.

According to multiple media reports, Oakland also is giving New York $1 million in the deal, which leaves the Mets on the hook for just over $2 million of Clippard's remaining salary this year.

Clippard, who stepped in as Oakland's closer after Sean Doolittle was injured, has 17 saves and a 2.79 ERA. He signed a one-year, $8.3 million contract in February after the A's had acquired him from the Washington Nationals in January.

Last season for the Nationals, Clippard was 7-4 with one save and a 2.18 ERA in 75 games. He was named to the All-Star team for the second time in his nine seasons.

Clippard, 30, is expected to be the setup man for Mets closer Jeurys Familia.

Meisner, 20, was a third-round pick of the Mets in 2013. In 18 games for the Mets' Class A teams this year, he is 10-4 with a 2.35 ERA.

Red Sox trade OF Victorino to Angels

The Boston Red Sox traded injury-plagued outfielder Shane Victorino and cash considerations to the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for minor-league infielder Josh Rutledge, the Red Sox announced Monday.

To fill Victorino's spot on the 25-man roster, Boston recalled outfielder Rusney Castillo from Triple-A Pawtucket. Castillo was scheduled to start Monday night at Fenway Park against the Chicago White Sox.

Victorino, 34, hit .245 with one homer and four RBIs in just 33 games for the Red Sox this season. He has spent much of the season on the disabled list, first because of a hamstring injury and later with a calf problem.

Victorino was limited to 30 games last season because of hamstring and back problems.

Rutledge, 26, played with the Colorado Rockies from 2012 to 2014. He hit .265 in 105 games last year.

He began the 2015 season on the Angels' Triple-A Salt Lake roster and has hit .274 with five homers and 32 RBIs for the Bees.

Castillo, 28, has made 26 appearances for the Red Sox this season, hitting .230 with one home run.

Blue Jays reportedly acquire Tulowitzki from Rockies

The Toronto Blue Jays have bolstered their epic offense even further by trading for Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki early Tuesday morning, as first reported by Fox Sports.

The Blue Jays will also receive reliever LaTroy Hawkins, in exchange for shortstop Jose Reyes, and two prospects.

Before the trade the Blue Jays, who sit 7.0 games back of the American League East leading New York Yankees and 3.0 games of the wild card are currently 25/1 to win the World Series.

                  Tuesday, July 28

Hitters wind, thunderstorms expected at Fenway

There is rough weather on tap at Fenway Park where the Boston Red Sox are set to host the Chicago White Sox Tuesday night.

There will be a nine mile per hour wind blowing out to the Green Monster in left field and there is a chance of thunderstorms in the area. There is also a 37 percent chance of rain.

The White Sox will send Jeff Samardzija to the hill to take on Wade Miley and the Red Sox, who are currently -115 favorites. The total is at 8.5 runs.

Rays games go under with Estabrook behind the plate

When Mike Estabrook is calling balls and strikes for a Tampa Bay Rays game, the under is great play, going 16-2-1 when that is the case.

Estabrook will be behind home plate for Tampa Bay's Tuesday night game with the Detroit Tigers.

The total for Tuesday's contest will be a low 6.5 with a very good pitchers matchup on tap with David Price (2.31 ERA, 10-10 O/U) going up against Jake Odorizzi (2.85 ERA, 3-12 O/U).

Pirates' Morton struggling in recent starts

Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Charlie Morton has struggled of late, posting a personal record of 1-4 with an ERA of 7.76 over the course of his last six starts.

The 31-yyear-old is 6-4 with a 4.59 ERA and 1.30 WHIP on the season and 0-3 with a 5.11 ERA in four July starts.

He'll try to get things on the right path as he is probable to get the start for the Buccos at the Minnesota Twins Tuesday evening.

Orioles' Jiminez much more comfortable at home

Baltimore Orioles' starter Ubaldo Jiminez loves the mound at Oriole Park, leading the O's to a 10-1 record in his last 11 home starts.

In 2015 alone he is 5-1 with a 2.06 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP, to go along with 47 strikeouts to just seven walks in seven starts.

He takes the mound at home again Tuesday night when he takes on Julio Teheran and the Atlanta Braves. The Orioles are currently -185 favorites.

Angels RHP Weaver to begin rehab stint Thursday

Los Angeles Angels right-hander Jered Weaver will make a rehab start at Class-A Inland Empire on Thursday night.

Weaver has been on the disabled list for five weeks. He went 4-8 with a 4.75 ERA in 15 starts before his inflamed left hip forced the Angels to act. Tests revealed no structural damage, but the team said it would take its time bringing Weaver back.

Weaver was told not to pick up a baseball for five days and was re-evaluated, when the news was better.

"There's obviously something in his mechanics that are out of whack," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said in June. "I have a lot of confidence that we're gonna see him get better as we move forward, but right now there's no doubt about just trying to exhale a little bit."

Phillies on fire since All-Star break

Somehow, some way, the Philadelphia Phillies are the hottest team in baseball since the All-Star break, posting a record of 8-1 in nine games since the midsummer classic.

The Phils swept the Miami Marlins, took two of three from the Tampa Bay Rays and, most recently, swept the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

The Phillies have outscored the opposition 48-27 since the All-Star break after posting a league-worst run differential (minus-160) in the first half of the season.

They face the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre Tuesday evening. Adam Morgan is probable for the Phillies (+192) while Felix Doubront is expected to start for the Jays (-210).

Being a home favorite hasn't led to success for Indians

Being a home favorite hasn't worked out for the Cleveland Indians, losing six straight contests when that is the case.

That is exactly the position they will be in Tuesday night when they host the Kansas City Royals.

The Tribe and right-hander Trevor Bauer (8-7, 4.29 ERA) are currently -115 home favorites against the American League leading Royals. Kansas City counters with right-hander Chris Young (8-6, 3.32 ERA).

Preview: Sky (11-6) at Mercury (9-7)

                      Date: July 28, 2015 10:00 PM EDT

With the Sylvia Fowles saga finally behind them, Elena Delle Donne and the Chicago Sky hope to pick up where they left off prior to the All-Star break.

After acquiring All-Star center Erika De Souza, the visiting Sky seek their seventh win in eight games by snapping a five-game losing streak against the Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday night in the first meeting since last year's WNBA Finals.

Fowles was a three-time All-Star averaging 15.7 points and 9.8 rebounds in her career before opting to sit out the first half of this season after requesting a trade in the offseason.

Chicago (11-6) has managed to hold its own without the star center behind Delle Donne, who leads the league at 24.5 points per game.

The Sky, one game behind first-place New York, sought to put the situation behind them Monday by trading Fowles to Minnesota and receiving De Souza from Atlanta in the three-team deal.

Chicago got a close look at De Souza last Tuesday when she finished with 10 points, nine boards and four blocks in the Sky's 97-92 home win. She's averaging 8.6 points and 7.5 rebounds this season.

'Erika brings veteran leadership, a versatile skill-set and defensive intensity that will complement our existing core,' coach and general manager Pokey Chatman said. 'Her presence in the paint will be extremely valuable as we enter the second half of the season.'

It's uncertain whether De Souza will be available as the Sky seek their third straight win. Delle Donne, who had 16 points in Saturday's All-Star Game, has totaled 56 to go along with 21 rebounds and seven blocks in last two victories.

Reserve guard Allie Quigley also has played a key role by averaging 16.5 points over her last four games. All-Star Cappie Pondexter, though, is looking a fresh start after scoring 9.3 per game on 9-of-29 shooting in her past three.

Chicago will get its first shot at Phoenix since dropping three straight in last year's WNBA Finals. Although they no longer have Finals MVP Diana Taurasi, the Mercury (9-7) still have All-Stars Brittney Griner, Candice Dupree and DeWanna Bonner.

Griner leads the team with 17.4 points per game, Bonner is second at 16.9 and Dupree averages 14.5. Dupree scored 20.0 per game versus Chicago in last year's championship series.

Phoenix took all five meetings from the Sky last season and has won four straight at home. The squad, however, hopes to avoid its first three-game losing streak since July 21-Aug. 1, 2013.

The Mercury had a six-game winning streak snapped in a 75-73 home loss to the Liberty on July 18 before stumbling into the break with a 70-65 loss at league-worst Los Angeles last Tuesday.

They'll have to tighten things up defensively after allowing the Sparks to shoot 48.2 percent. The Sky easily lead the WNBA in shooting percentage (46.5) and scoring average (85.8).

                        Fever-Sun Preview

Though the Indiana Fever's longest winning stretch in three seasons has ended, they can bounce back by keeping the Connecticut Sun winless in July.

The visiting Fever look to hand the Sun a sixth consecutive defeat Saturday night.

Indiana (8-7) averaged 83.8 points and shot 50.3 percent during a five-game winning streak that was snapped with Friday's 68-50 loss at Washington. Marissa Coleman had 11 points and Tamika Catchings (12.2 points per game) was held to two free throws while going 0 for 7 from the field as the Fever shot 31.6 percent in their lowest-scoring contest of the season.

"Defensively, they turned up their intensity and bothered us up and down the floor," coach Stephanie White told the Fever's official website.

It was the second-lowest scoring game of the year for Catchings, who went without a point in an 80-63 victory at New York on June 19. In her 14th season, Catchings is being counted on for more than just statistics.

"I think the biggest thing for me now is just my leadership, continuing to build that," she said.

"Being a leader, a lot of people will put that on the best player or the second-best player, but it's really something that when you look at that sole leader having that soul of your team, that's not something you can pick out somebody and say, 'You're going to be it.'"

The Fever attempt to regroup where that winning stretch began June 30, when they shot 55.4 percent in a 92-84 victory over Connecticut (7-6). Catchings had 26 points with 10 rebounds as Indiana led by as many as 23 in the third quarter before the Sun got within three with 1:05 remaining.

That snapped the Sun's seven-game winning stretch and began a five-game slide in which they've yielded at least 85 points three times but dropped four by eight or fewer. They shot 30.0 percent while scoring their fewest points of 2015 in Thursday's 64-57 loss at New York.

"We really wanted to come at them and get some inside action, points in the paint ourselves ... but (New York) made our life difficult," coach Anne Donovan said.

Leading scorer Alex Bentley (17.1) has totaled 47 points in the last two home games and scored 18 against the Fever last month. Teammate Kelsey Bone had 21 in that game before she was ejected with 1:05 remaining for a flagrant 2 foul.

The Fever will again be without rookie center Natalie Achonwa (9.5) as she takes part in the Pan American Games for Canada. She is expected to rejoin the club following next week's All-Star break.

AFC North camp preview: Ravens restart playoff chase

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- When the Baltimore Ravens trudged out of the locker room at Gillette Stadium in January following a narrow AFC divisional-round playoff loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion New England Patriots, veteran wide receiver Steve Smith vowed they would be back and that the result would be different the next time.

Seven months later, the Ravens launch their training camp hoping that they had the kind of offseason that propels them to take a step forward in the playoffs instead of regressing. Baltimore has reached the playoffs in six of coach John Harbaugh's seven seasons.

That includes a Super Bowl XLVII win over the San Francisco 49ers, and they are 72-40 in the regular season during that span and 10-5 in the postseason.

Following an offseason where the roster absorbed some losses, including wide receiver Torrey Smith and outside linebacker Pernell McPhee leaving as free agents and defensive tackle Haloti Ngata being traded to the Detroit Lions after a contract dispute, the Ravens are nonetheless confident about where they stand.

"Happy with where we're at and looking forward to where we're going," Harbaugh said during the final day of the Ravens' minicamp in June.

As the Ravens launch their camp, they will have several competitions to monitor at strong safety, tight end and wide receiver. There is a strong likelihood they will have a younger, revamped depth chart with as many as five new starters this season. The goals for training camp are to identify the best possible starting lineup, continue to install the playbooks and build timing and chemistry.

"The training camp is built, so we have the reps built and all the practices built," Harbaugh said. "All the situations are built in, every football formation look that we want to work on. You learn a lot in the OTAs in terms of what you're going to be good at, you think, so you start steering in that direction a little bit more. And we'll try to keep evolving from that, because we're going to learn more as we go, and we'll adjust as we go.

"But I'm looking for the young guys to step up. Our young guys probably get more reps than I can imagine anybody else getting, so we put our young guys in positions to compete for jobs. These rookies are going to have a chance to compete for jobs."

                            --Team strength: Linebacker.

Between outside linebackers Elvis Dumervil, Terrell Suggs and Courtney Upshaw and Pro Bowl inside linebacker C.J. Mosley and middle linebacker Daryl Smith, the position is a huge asset to the defense.

                            --Breakout player: Cornerback Jimmy Smith.

Smith is emerging as a shutdown cover guy. He was signed to a $48 million contract and has recovered from a Lisfranc foot sprain.

                            --Work in progress: Tight end.

The Ravens remain in flux at tight end where second-year pro Crockett Gillmore hasn't established himself yet as a receiver and rookie Maxx Williams is unproven in terms of durability and blocking.

The Ravens hope the two young players develop into proven pros this fall.

NFC East camp preview: Cowboys feel primed for title run

OXNARD, Calif. -- Nobody expected the Dallas Cowboys to be considered Super Bowl contenders a year ago.

Heck, most expected them to finish 8-8 or worse and for head coach Jason Garrett to be fired at the end of the season.

Of course, that was before the Cowboys became one of the surprising breakthrough stories of 2014, finishing with a 12-4 record, winning the NFC East and coming within a controversial non-catch by receiver Dez Bryant of reaching the NFC title game for the first time since 1995, the last time they won the Super Bowl.

It comes as no surprise that the Cowboys are considered prime Super Bowl contenders before the 2015 season. They remain the best team in the NFC East and they have ranked just behind the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers as the cream of the conference.

The Cowboys didn't care what outsiders thought last year and they don't care this year.

They will open training camp this week with the Super Bowl as their goal, but with the primary focus of defining themselves for themselves just as they did a year ago.

"Any coach or player or staff member, if you don't have the goal of winning the Super Bowl you are in the wrong profession," Garrett said. "Everybody has that goal. We define ourselves by what we do. We did that last year. We have to do that again this year. Everybody will understand that really well.

"Don't let other people define you. We define ourselves by what we do. When I did this press conference a year ago, we were probably regarded as a bottom-five or bottom-10 team in the league. One of the best things our team did last year was that we defined ourselves. We didn't listen to any outside forces who said we weren't this or we weren't that. We just went to work every day. We have to do that again. They might think differently of us this year. It really doesn't matter. We define ourselves by what we do. That starts (Tuesday)."

Still there is no question that the Super Bowl is the Cowboys' goal after last season's coming of age campaign and an offseason in which they accomplished almost everything they wanted, save for the acquisition of Vikings running back Adrian Peterson in a trade.

                              But no one gets everything.

The Cowboys are still on the hunt for a starting running back but every other thing they tried came up roses.

The top priority was retaining Bryant and making him happy. He was signed to a five-year, $70 million contract two weeks ago, ending his threats to boycott the season and putting him on the field for training camp.

"To get him signed and ready to go to start camp is exciting," Garrett said in his first comments since the signing. "He is a great football player but more important he is a great teammate. He is passionate about the game. He is passionate about the team, his teammates. We are excited to see him out there."

Garrett is also happy to avoid the distracting story line of what a Bryant holdout would have brought to training camp.

"I don't think anyone wants those types of things," Garrett said. "You don't want holdouts. You don't want the business of the NFL to creep in as you get close to the season. The business is real. You have to take the emotions out of it. But it's fun to have him back. It's fun to have in him in the fold and on the practice field as we start training camp."

Quarterback Tony Romo had his first healthy offseason in three years and will head into training camp 100 percent for the first time since 2012.

The best offensive line in the NFL got even better with the addition of La'el Collins, an undrafted rookie free agent with first-round talent who could start at left guard.

The defense should be better because of the return of linebacker Sean Lee from injury and the additions of defensive ends Greg Hardy and Randy Gregory and cornerback Byron Jones in the draft and free agency.

The Cowboys got a win when Hardy's NFL suspension for violating the league's personal conduct policy was reduced from 10 games to four.

Cornerback Morris Claiborne, who has been a disappointment since coming to the team with the sixth overall pick in 2012, is also a source of optimism because of a successful return from knee surgery that might allow the Cowboys to play Jones at safety.

"It's all about the production on the field," executive vice president Stephen Jones said in affirming the team's highly productive offseason. "We obviously feel like we got a lot accomplished. We theoretically got done what we felt like we needed to do to make our team better and take the next step. Now we'll see if it happens."

                              CAMP CALENDAR

                              July 28: Team reports

                              July 30: First practice

Aug. 17-18: Joint practices with Rams in Oxnard

                              Aug. 28: Camp ends

                              --Team strength: Offensive line.

The Cowboys' offensive line was considered the best in the NFL last year when it placed three players in the Pro Bowl: left tackle Tyron Smith, center Travis Frederick and right guard Zack Martin. They return their entire unit from a year ago while also adding a first-round talent in undrafted rookie free agent La'el Collins, who was considered a top 15 pick before questions about the murder of an ex-girlfriend made him untouchable. Once cleared, Collins signed with the Cowboys and could replace Ron Leary at left guard.

--Breakout player: Defensive tackle Tyrone Crawford.

Crawford had a nice bounce-back season last year after missing the 2013 campaign with a torn Achilles. He replaced Henry Melton in the starting lineup at defensive tackle, recording 33 tackles and three sacks. The Cowboys expect marked improvement in 2015 as Crawford gets more comfortable at defensive tackle. He played defensive end his first two years in the league. He had 37 hurries last year so he has talent to rush up the middle. The key in 2015 is for him to finish those hurries with sacks.

                              --Work in progress: Running back.

The Cowboys have yet to find a replacement for the departed DeMarco Murray. Joseph Randle and Darren McFadden are the most likely starters at this point. But the team doesn't trust the speedy Randle, who has yet to carry a full load for a full season. McFadden has been injured almost every year and averaged less than four yards per carry the past three seasons with Oakland.

The Cowboys also have no one to get the tough yards in short-yardage situations. They will be looking for options throughout training camp.

                                **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

                                13) Was going to sum up my Las Vegas vacation today, but Colorado traded its SS Troy Tulowitzki late last night, so we'll write about Vegas tomorrow. Rockies sent Tulowitzki and LaTroy Hawkins to Toronto for Jose Reyes and three prospects.

                                12) First question: Will both shortstops stay put? Rockies have a SS in AAA named Story who is a big prospect, so hard to believe a non-contender would pay Reyes big money ($20M+ a year)-- he could be moving again soon.

                                11) Toronto is currently 50-50, seven games out of first place in AL East, three games out of the second Wild Card in a mediocre AL. Is Tulowtzki an upgrade over Reyes? Even if he is, it ain't by much and asking an injury-prone guy to play half his games on art9ificial turf is dicey at best. Toronto still needs to add pitching.

                                10) Toronto is LaTroy Hawkins' 11th major league team, putting him two games behind record-holder Octavio Dotel, who pitched for 13 teams.

                                9) Blue Jays haven't been in the playoffs since '93; they're all in for this year.

                                8) Cubs 9, Rockies 8-- Carlos Gonzalez homered in top of 9th to give Colorado an 8-7 lead, but Kris Bryant sent everyone home happy with a walk-off tater in bottom of the ninth. Soon after, Colorado traded its best/most popular player. Rough night.

                                7) Alex Rodriguez homered on his 40th birthday, mkaing him the 4th player ever to homer as a teenager and then again when he was 40+ years old-- other three are Rusty Staub, Gary Sheffield and Ty Cobb.

                                6) White Sox 10, Red Sox 8-- Chicago hit back/back triples to start the game, first team since the 2011 Tigers to do that.

                                5) Randy Johnson gave up one home run to a pitcher in his career; when he was on the Giants, Yovani Gallardo hit one off him while pitching for the Brewers.

                                4) You don't think Clint Hurdle earns his salary? Pirates have had 15 sellouts already this season. Hurdle has done a fantastic job in the Steel City.

                                3) Someone named Ben Carson is running for President; I've vote for Ben Stiller, Ben Roethlisberger or Carson Palmer before this guy-- I have zero idea who he is.

                                2) Indians are 19-31 at home; 4-15 vs lefty starters, 15-16 vs righty starters. Indians are 9-8 on road vs lefties 17-15 vs righties. Go figure.

                                1) Weird week with trades starting to happen every few hours- this is also the week rosters in our keeper fantasy league freeze for the season, so lot of stuff to keep up with. Always wondered how late these GMs of big league teams call each other?

The Colorado-Toronto trade was announced late; did it set off a flurry of latenight phone calls with GMs all over baseball? What if a GM went to bed early and woke up to find the landscape had changed drastically? Lot of money at stake in the big leagues.
