    Guys,

This thread will be late posting today.

I've got an 8:30 appointment at the VA hospital 70 miles away. It usually takes 3-4 hours after appointment time to actually be called in to see the doctor. There is no internet availability at this place and my phone is not nearly capable enough to put this thread together. So, I can't even guess when I'll be able to resume posting.

The good news is we have no day games and I'll get it all in asap.

    Good luck tonight, guys!

MLB roundup: Cole wins 14th, Pirates stop Nats

PITTSBURGH -- Gerrit Cole pitched into the eighth inning to become the first 14-game winner in the major leagues and Neil Walker homered as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Washington Nationals 3-1 on Sunday.

Cole allowed one run and seven hits in 7 2/3 innings with eight strikeouts and no walks against the National League East-leading Nationals as he became the first Pirates pitcher with 14 wins by the end of July since Dock Ellis was 15-4 in 1971.

Cole kept his record perfect against the NL East this season as he is 6-0 with a 1.26 ERA in six starts. Cole also improved to 7-1 with a 1.84 ERA in eight day starts and 9-2 with a 2.15 ERA in his last 12 overall outings.

Nationals right-hander Jose Ross (2-3) had his streak of 29 2/3 innings without allowing a homer to begin his career ended when the switch-hitting Walker connected to lead off the fourth. Walker's ninth homer of the season extended the Pirates' lead to 3-1.

        Mets 3, Dodgers 2 (10 innings)

NEW YORK -- Juan Uribe singled with one out in the bottom the 10th inning to lift New York over Los Angeles in a game when the Mets ended right-hander Zack Greinke's scoreless innings streak at 45 2/3.

The Mets scratched out two runs off Greinke, getting its first run on a fielder's choice by right-hander Jacob deGrom in the third and its second run when rookie Michael Conforto was hit by a pitch in the sixth.

Activated from the paternity list before the game, Greinke allowed two runs and four hits in seven innings. His scoreless streak was the fourth-longest in baseball history and 13 1/3 shy of Orel Hershiser's record of 59 scoreless innings Aug. 30-Sept, 28, 1988. It also was behind scoreless streaks of 58 by Hall of Famers Don Drysdale and 47 by Bob Gibson in 1968.

        Orioles 5, Rays 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Baltimore jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Tampa Bay had its first hit and went on to close out a series win.

The Orioles took two of three games from the Rays, who are now 9-21 since being a season-high 10 games over .500 on June 20. Tampa Bay continues to struggle with runners in scoring position, its only runs in the last two games coming on solo home runs.

The Orioles tagged Rays starter Matt Moore for three runs in the first and had a 5-0 lead in the third after a two-run homer by Caleb Joseph.

        White Sox 2, Indians 1

CLEVELAND -- Carlos Rodon became the latest Chicago starter to stymie Cleveland as the White Sox completed a four-game series sweep.

The White Sox outscored Cleveland 26-5 in the series. Chicago never trailed at any point in the four games. The four starters in the series -- Jeff Samardzija, Jose Quintana, Chris Sale and Rodon -- were a combined 4-0 with a 0.88 ERA. In 30 2/3 innings, the starters held the Indians to three runs, with 27 strikeouts and no walks.

Rodon pitched a career-high 6 2/3 scoreless innings on five hits, with nine strikeouts and no walks. David Robertson pitched the ninth to pick up his 21st save.

        Royals 5, Astros 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Yordano Ventura outdueled Dallas Keuchel as Kansas City beat Houston.

Ventura (5-7) threw 97 pitches in seven innings, giving up a run on six hits. He walked none, hit a batter and struck out five.

Keuchel, who threw eight scoreless innings to beat the Royals 4-0 on June 30 in Houston, surrendered five runs on 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings.

        Yankees 7, Twins 2

MINNEAPOLIS -- A six-run sixth inning helped lift New York over Minnesota as the Yankees took two of three in the series.

Chase Headley drove in two runs in the sixth inning and Stephen Drew added a two-run homer as the Yankees won their second straight game after losing the series opener. The Twins outscored the Yankees 15-1 through the first 12 innings of the series. New York went on to outscore Minnesota 15-2 the remainder of the three-game set.

Yankees right-hander Nathan Eovaldi notched his 10th win of the season after allowing two runs on eight hits in eight-plus innings.

        Braves 3, Cardinals 2

ST. LOUIS -- Adonis Garcia's first major league home run was a game-winner for Atlanta.

Garcia led off the top of the sixth by going deep to snap a tie and lift the Braves over the Cardinals. The 30-year old Cuban had belted just three homers in 331 at-bats this year at Triple-A Gwinnett before being called up on Saturday.

Garcia belted a 1-0 offering from Michael Wacha 386 feet into the St. Louis bullpen in right-center field, making a winner of rookie right-hander Matt Wisler (5-1), who scattered seven hits and allowed two runs over seven innings.

        Phillies 11, Cubs 5

CHICAGO -- Domonic Brown went 3-for-5 with a double, triple and three RBIs to lead a 17-hit attack as Philadelphia completed a three-game sweep.

The victory was the fourth straight for the Phillies, eighth in nine games since the All-Star Break and their first sweep away from home. The Cubs dropped their third straight and four of their last five.

Phillies right-handed starter Aaron Nola (1-1) worked 7 2/3 innings in his second major league start. Cubs starter Jason Hammel (5-5) lasted 3 2/3 innings, his shortest outing of the season.

        Padres 3, Marlins 2

SAN DIEGO -- Odrisamer Despaigne allowed one run on two hits over six straight innings and for the third straight game right-handed relievers Joaquin Benoit and Craig Kimbrel blanked Miami over the final two innings as San Diego defeated the Marlins at Petco Park.

Justin Upton hit his 16th homer for the Padres while Matt Kemp drove in the decisive run with a grounder.

The Padres won three of four games against the Marlins to complete a 6-3 homestand. Their Friday and Saturday wins were by identical 3-1 scores.

        Giants 4, Athletics 3

SAN FRANCISCO -- Right-hander Tim Hudson became the 15th active pitcher to record a win over all 30 major league teams, beating Oakland for the first time in his career.

San Francisco's ninth win in 12 interleague games completed a three-game sweep of the rival A's, who have not won since Thursday's trade of left-hander Scott Kazmir.

Matt Duffy smacked a two-run home run and Buster Posey went 4-for-4, leading the Giants to the 11th win in their last 12 games. San Francisco has won six in a row at home to improve to 54-44, a season-high-tying 10 games over .500.

        Angels 13, Rangers 7

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Mike Trout hit two home runs and drove in five runs to lead Los Angeles to a win over Texas in front of 38,539 at Angel Stadium.

The Angels used their eighth win in 11 games to regain a one-game lead over the second-place Houston Astros in the American League West. Los Angeles also halted its three-game losing streak and ended the Rangers' stretch of four successive wins.

Trout also scored three runs and walked before finishing 4-for-4 to raise his average to .315. Kole Calhoun, C.J. Cron and Daniel Robertson contributed two hits apiece to the Angels' 15-hit attack.

        Mariners 6, Blue Jays 5 (10 innings)

SEATTLE -- Franklin Gutierrez finished off the game with a one-out, solo home run in the bottom of the 10th inning as Seattle beat Toronto.

Seattle (46-53) won a three-game series for the first time since June 19-21 when Gutierrez took Toronto reliever Aaron Loup (2-5) deep for his third home run of the season.

The game included five home runs, with sluggers Nelson Cruz of the Mariners and Josh Donaldson of the Blue Jays adding mammoth shots to their impressive season totals. Donaldson drove in the first run of the game with a solo shot to left in the top of the first, his 24th homer of the season, then Cruz hit his 25th with a two-run bomb that tied the score 5-5 in the seventh.

        Diamondbacks 3, Brewers 0

PHOENIX -- Arizona right-hander Jeremy Hellickson pitched six scoreless innings and pinch hitter Chris Owings hit a two-run double in the Diamondbacks' shutout victory over Milwaukee at Chase Field.

Hellickson (7-6) gave up four hits and struck out six while dropping his ERA to 4.60, the lowest it has been since April 19. He walked three.

Owings hit for Hellickson in the bottom of the sixth inning and doubled inside the bag at third off right-hander Matt Garza (5-11) for a 3-0 lead.

        Rockies 17, Reds 7

DENVER -- Colorado hit five home runs, three of them during a 10-run third inning, and walloped Cincinnati. Ben

Paulsen and Carlos Gonzalez each homered twice. Paulsen recorded his first multi-homer game, and he has seven home runs on the season. He set single-game career highs with four hits and four RBIs as the Rockies reached a season high in runs and matched their most lopsided victory margin of the season. Paulsen finished a double shy of the cycle when he struck out on his final at-bat in the seventh.

Gonzalez tied career highs with six RBIs and four runs. Gonzalez has eight home runs this month, giving him 18 this season.

        Red Sox 11, Tigers 1

BOSTON -- David Ortiz drove in a career-high seven runs with two three-run homers and an RBI single in a four-hit night as Boston routed struggling Detroit.

Red Sox rookie left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, allowing a long home run to third baseman Nick Castellanos and two singles. Relievers Robbie Ross Jr. and Alexi Ogando completed the three-hitter.

The last-place Red Sox stroked a season-high 20 hits to take the deciding game of the three-game series.

Under has been following this pitcher around

When Chicago Cubs righty Kyle Hendricks has taken the mound lately, Under bettors have been the ones cashing in.

The under is 5-1 in Hendricks' last six outings. Monday's matchup against the Colorado Rockies pits Hendricks against left-hander Jorge De La Rosa.

As of this writing, the total for the game was off the board at most books.

Gausman hurting the pockets of Orioles bettors

The Baltimore Orioles are 1-5 in Kevin Gausman's last six starts but will have an opportunity to right the ship Monday against the Atlanta Braves.

Atlanta is scheduled to send southpaw Alex Wood to the hill.

The O's are presently in the -153 ballpark at sportsbooks.

Reds trade RHP Cueto to Royals

The Cincinnati Reds traded ace Johnny Cueto to the Kansas City Royals, the teams confirmed Sunday.

The Reds obtained left-handers Brandon Finnegan, John Lamb and Cody Reed in exchange for Cueto and cash considerations.

The deal was announced during the third inning of Sunday's Houston Astros-Royals game.

It was nothing serious at all, RS. I was recently assigned one of the new doctors at the VA and he wanted a heart ultrasound strictly for his own benefit. He was finding a lot of erroneous info on patients from the old doctor and just wants to see for himself what's going on with all his new patients.

I gotta tell you that the changes they're trying to make in the VA are starting to show. Everything's happening a lot quicker now and these new people seem to actually be listening to patients. I hope Senators McCain and Inhoff stay on this revamping of the VA because they are really trying hard to right this ship and good results are starting to show. There's a long way to go but the signs are very good!

Thanks for your concern, buddy. I really appreciate it.

I'll take your advice on the Tribe. My job hasn't given me time to pick games at all since the second or third week of the season. All the games I've played so far this year have come from you guys and I'm getting great results. CheChe has really been money in the bank this season!

MLB betting cheat sheet: AL West up for grabs
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the weekend major-league schedule:

                          AL West Up For Grabs

The Angels hold a slim one game lead on the Astros at the top of the AL West, and the two teams will play Game 1 of a three game series at Minutemaid Park on Tuesday.

Recent meetings between these two teams have seen a trend of low scoring games, with the total going under at a rate of 7-2-1 in the last 10.

The Astros have won nine of their last 10 in Houston, and their home record of 34-18 is tied with Kansas City for the best in the American League.

                          Cubs Killing Bettors In July

I've been saying it for months now, "The Cubs are the most overrated team in baseball".

Bettors learned that the hard way this weekend, as they were swept at home by the cellar dwelling Phillies. The average price to back the Cubs in those games was higher than -200. They've been listed as the favorite in 17 of their 22 games this month, winning only eight of those.

Something to think about before backing the Cubbies as a favorite.

                          Home Sweet Home

The Twins aren't getting a lot of love from bookmakers despite owning the fifth-best record in the American League.

Only two teams have a better home record than Minnesota, and the Twins will play their next six games at Target Field. The Colorado Rockies are the only team in the major leagues with a higher home batting average, and the Twins rank fourth in runs scored at home.

                          Pitching Notes

                          * Zack Greinke's scoreless innings streak ended at 45 2/3 innings with a loss to the Mets in a pitcher's duel at Citi Field. The right-hander still pitched a great game, allowing a pair of runs on just four hits over seven innings. He's still the only pitcher in the major leagues with an ERA below 2.00.

                          * Andrew Heaney is still perfect in his rookie season with the Los Angeles Angels. The 24-year-old southpaw moved to 5-0 with a win over Texas on Sunday. He's limited the opposition to two runs or less, going at least six innings in all six of his starts so far.

                          Hitting Notes

                          * Mike Trout went deep twice against Texas on Sunday, taking over the major league lead with 31 home runs so far this season. He's hitting an incredible .361 with a 11 home runs and 21 RBIs in the month of July. He might be set to cool off a little in Houston, where he's just 8-for-43 over the last two seasons.

                          * Mike Napoli has been struggling to stay above the Mendoza Line all year long, but the veteran has shown signs of life here lately. He's 10 for his last 25 with a home run and five RBIs. The Red Sox will be at home all week, and he should have a good chance to stay hot against the struggling Chicago White Sox.

                          Totals Streak

When you think of Safeco Field, you think of a notorious pitcher's park where runs are hard to come by. That certainly hasn't been the case lately, and on Sunday the Blue Jays and the Mariners combined to hit five home runs in a 6-5 extra-innings win for Seattle. That puts the over trend at Safeco at 12-2-2 over the last 16.

                          Weather Notes

                          * There is a 58 percent possibility of thunderstorms in Baltimore when the Orioles host the Atlanta Braves Monday.

                          * Pitchers could be aided by wind in Texas as forecasts are calling for find to blow in from right field at around 11 miles per hour when the Rangers host the Yankees Tuesday.

                          Injury Notes

                          * Freddie Freeman came of the DL this weekend, and he got the start on Sunday going 1-for-3 in a win over the Braves. He came of the bench on Saturday going 0-for-1.

                          * Jean Segura was scratched from Sunday's game with a sore throat, and he's listed as day to day.

Game of the Day: Royals at Indians
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kansas City Royals at Cleveland Indians (-111, 7.5)

While the Cleveland Indians set up to sell at Friday’s trade deadline following a disappointing weekend, the Kansas City Royals got a jump on the market. The Royals will welcome Johnny Cueto to the bench when they visit the Indians for the start of a three-game series on Monday.

Kansas City’s starters own a 4.26 ERA and the team was in the market for another starter to take some of the pressure off the shut-down bullpen after Jason Vargas went down for the season with an elbow injury. Enter Cueto, who was acquired from the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday in a deal aimed at getting the team back to the World Series. “I'm excited about my next chapter,” Cueto told reporters. “I know (the Royals) play baseball very good. I'm excited because I know it's going to be good for my career and good for the team.” Cleveland was teetering on the brink of wild card contention before heading into a four-game home series against the Chicago White Sox and had any hopes dashed while being outscored 26-5 in a four-game sweep.

Books opened the Indians -115 but that has been adjusted to -111. The total opened 7.5.

                            INJURY REPORT:
Royals - LF Alex Gordon (Early September, groin). Indians - 1B Nick Swisher (15-day DL, knee).

                            WEATHER WATCH:
Temperatures in the high-70s under clear skies. Wind will blow in from leftfield at 10 miles per hour.

                            PITCHING MATCHUP:
Royals RH Edinson Volquez (9-5, 3.15 ERA) vs. Indians RH Cody Anderson (2-1, 1.91)

Volquez, who was a teammate of Cueto’s in Cincinnati from 2008-11, is pitching a lot like an ace of late and turned in his fourth straight start allowing two or fewer earned runs in a win over Pittsburgh on Wednesday. The Dominican Republic native struck out eight and allowed one run on eight hits over 7 2/3 innings against the Pirates. Volquez could not harness his arsenal against Cleveland on May 7 and issued six walks in three innings before being bailed out by his offense in a no decision.

Anderson fell back down to earth in a big way at Milwaukee on Wednesday, when he was lit up for four runs on 10 hits in 2 2/3 innings. The rookie from California had surrendered a total of three runs in 30 1/3 innings through his first four major-league starts. Anderson is making his first start against the Royals and has allowed one run and nine hits in 14 1/3 innings at home.

                            TRENDS:

                            * Over is 5-0 in the last five meetings in Cleveland.
                            * Over is 8-2-1 in the last 11 meetings.
                            * Royals are 12-3 in Volquezs last 15 starts.
                            * Indians are 2-14 in their last 16 Monday games.

                            CONSENSUS:
Seventy-one percent of users are backing the visiting Royals.

Tigers red-hot when Sanchez takes the mound

The Detroit Tigers' season is hanging in the balance, so it is a good thing Anibal Sanchez is on the mound Monday night against the Tampa Bay Rays, having won his last eight starts.

The Tigers' right-hander is pitching to a 3.16 ERA with 46 strikeouts to just 18 walks.

Sanchez and the Tigers are currently +107 road dogs, going up against Rays right-hander Nathan Karns, who is 5-5 with a 3.47 ERA in 19 starts this season.

                              Rockies' CarGo officially hot

DENVER -- Right fielder Carlos Gonzalez had another big game for the Colorado Rockies. When asked about him after they pounded the Reds 17-7, manager Walt Weiss deadpanned, "I think CarGo's officially hot."

Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with two home runs, four runs scored and six RBIs. The four runs tied a career-high set April 11, 2012, against San Francisco. He tied his career-high with six RBIs for the sixth time, the last on June 5, 2013, at Cincinnati.

Gonzalez had not had a multi-homer game all season but had one Friday and finished with two in the series with the Reds. Gonzalez has 18 homers for the season and eight this month when he has gone 26-for-69 (.377) with six doubles, 19 RBIs and 15 runs scored.

Gonzalez has at least one hit in 11 of his past 12 games, going 21-for-48 (.438) in that stretch with seven homers and 17 RBIs.

"It looks like he's dictating the at-bat now," Weiss said. "It looks like he's slowing down, he's recognizing pitches. When he gets the barrel on the ball, a lot of things happen, a lot of damage."
