    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Odds to win the Canadian Open golf tournament this weekend.......

8-1-- Jason Day-- Have to be concerned if his vertigo flares up.

    15-1-- Bubba Watson-Jim Furyk-Matt Kuchar

20-1-- Brooks Koepka-- Short week after Monday round in Scotland.

25-1-- Luke Donald-Graham DeLaet-- DeLaet is the home country hero.

    30-1-- Ryan Palmer-JB Holmes

    35-1-- Hunter Mahan

    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Notes from the Adidas Uprising tournament

    13) A tip of the hat to the people who organize the Adidas Uprising tournament at the Cashman Center in downtown Las Vegas, a building next to the ballpark where the Mets' AAA team plays. This tournament is really well organized, well-run-- I had a great time watching games there Wednesday. Good hot dogs too.

If you're in Las Vegas and you like college basketball, Cashman Center is good place to see lot of good games/players all under one roof.

    12) Seven games under one roof, so which game do I watch? You see Roy Williams and Lon Kruger watching the same game, well there's a good place to start. Just about all the bigtime coaches are here this week; its the last week of summer recruiting.

    11) Obviously, there is tremendous competition for players; the team with the better players wins most of the time- tactics only take you so far. So coaches wear the polo shirt from their school, sit on the baseline and watch these games-- there are nine games on each court every day.

Coaches don't watch every game; they watch the kids they're interested in and fill in with other games in between, trying to find their next star. It is an inexact science.

    10) Some coaches are wearing different polo shirts this summer; Bobby Hurley wears an Arizona State shirt, Ben Howland/Mississippi State, Rick Barnes/Tennessee, Shaka Smart/Texas, Eric Musselman/Nevada. New faces in new places next winter.

    9) Most frustrating thing about watching this stuff: Kids do not understand, for the most part, what impresses a coach. Making shots is great, but are they good shots? Is a point guard making his teammates better? Is a big guy contesting shots and finishing close to the basket?

There was a 6-11 kid today who was jacking 3-pointers; he is one of the few unsigned Class of 2015 kids left, but no one wants him because he has low basketball IQ. Now he will get something eventually because he is 6-11, but he isn't as good as he should be and he won't play for as good a program as he should.

    8) A coach I was talking to today suggested college games would be faster if they did not let teams bring chairs onto the floor during time-outs. NBA teams don't do it.

    7) In 'n Out Burger is America's finest fast food. We need these in New York. I'm not kidding, best milkshake I've ever had. Someone make this happen, please?!?!

    6) One of best things about these tournaments is seeing high school kids from different corners of the country facing each other. Watched a good game tonight with a team from Mississippi playing a team from Oakland. High level of play, coaches from Iowa State, Miss State, Texas A&M watching. Bigtime players.

    5) Kid named Jereny Sheppard had a really good game tonight; showed great range on his shot-- sometimes a kid has a great game and it isn't indicative of his true game, but he looked like a keeper for sure, He plays for Team Loaded in Virginia and played in a game where a lot of high-level coaches were watching attentively.

    4) A teammate of his, Isaiah Todd was listed as a 14-year old 8th grader in the book; coaches I asked all seemed to think it was a mistake in the book. You almost never see a kid that yioung competing at this level. Pretty good player too.

    3) Rick Pitino is coaching the Puerto Rican team in the Pan Am games; veteran coach Ralph Willard is here with the Louisville assistants, keeping track of prospects.

    2) This whole enterprise is an enormous moneymaker; costs around $650 a team to play in this event and there are tons of teams in several age groups. On top of that, it costs $375 for a college program to get the information packet, plus $75 each for each additional assistant coach-- and they have to play that at each tournament they go to- there are three in town this week.

One mid-major head coach I was talking to Wednesday said he shelled out $1,000, just for admission/information packets for his staff. Do the math there-- there are 351 D-I basketball programs- they all need to recruit at events like this.

    1) Thursday's plan is to head to Bishop Gorman to the Fab 48 tournament and see those teams play-- there were lot of good teams there last year, with teams from as far away as Germany and the Canary Islands. Basketball is truly a global game now.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

      Lookahead spot

The Boston Red Sox are longing for the familiar form of Fenway Park, wrapping up a seven-game western road trip this week. Boston has stumbled since returning from the break. It was swept in four games against the Los Angeles Dodgers, getting outscored 4-24 in that series, and dropped the opener at Houston Tuesday.

Boston has another game against the Astros before heading home. The Red Sox are just 20-29 and down -8.5 units away from Beantown, as of Wednesday, and could get caught looking ahead to an extended 10-game home stand which begins Friday.

      Letdown spot

The Carolina Panthers are trying to hold on to their place in the NFC South as well as the conference, making the playoffs as a 7-8-1 SU team last season – enough to top the sub-par division. The Panthers can prove they’re not just a formality with a big win against the Green Bay Packers in Week 9 of the upcoming NFL season. Oddsmakers currently have Carolina set as a 3-point home underdog for that matchup.

However, the Panthers are in prime letdown position following this showdown with the Cheeseheads, traveling to play the Tennessee Titans in Week 10. Carolina is an early 2.5-point underdog on the road but the Titans will be coming home for the only time in a four-game span that has them in Houston, New Orleans and Jacksonville in November.

      Schedule spot

There’s plenty of buzz in Ann Arbor this summer, with former San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh taking over the sidelines at the Big House. However, Harbaugh’s debut will come away from home in a tough schedule spot for the Wolverines. Michigan opens play at Utah in Week 1, set as a +5.5 underdog, in what will be a closely-dissected game for loyal backers of the Maize and Blue.

Not only will Michigan be dealing with the pressure that comes with upholding Harbaugh’s standard but this showdown in Salt Lake City will also test the Wolverines’ early-season conditioning, which is never in game shape no matter how many wind sprints you run. The altitude at Rice-Eccles Stadium could quickly suck the air out of Harbaugh’s debut.

MLB roundup: Bolsinger, Dodgers beat Braves

ATLANTA -- The Los Angeles Dodgers were in desperate need of a quality start from the back end of their rotation, and Mike Bolsinger supplied it Wednesday.

Bolsinger allowed just three hits and an unearned run over seven innings and the Dodgers salvaged the final game of the series with a 3-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves at a sweltering Turner Field.

The Dodgers scored all three runs in the fifth inning, on an RBI single by Alberto Callaspo, an RBI double by Jimmy Rollins and an RBI single by Joc Pederson.

Atlanta starter Julio Teheran gave up all three runs and allowed six hits and three walks over seven innings. He struck out 11.

        Nationals 4, Mets 3

WASHINGTON -- Danny Espinosa hit a two-out double to drive in Michael A. Taylor and break a tie during a three-run eighth as Washington came back to beat New York and take the rubber gamer of the three-game set.

Taylor had a two-run, two-out single in the eighth off reliever Bobby Parnell to the game at 3-3. Espinosa then came through with the game-winner against Parnell (1-1).

The winning pitcher was Matt Thornton (1-0), who pitched a scoreless eighth, while Drew Storen got his 29th save with a perfect ninth.

The first-place Nationals extended their lead to three games over the Mets, who have lost four of the last five to Washington.

        Phillies 5, Rays 4 (10 innings)

PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies finished a successful homestand with a celebration, beating Tampa Bay on Odubel Herrera's RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning.

Ben Revere went 3-for-5 with an RBI to raise his batting average to .300, while Domonic Brown also collected three hits and scored the winning run after singling in the 10th.

The Phillies have won back-to-back series for the first time this season and are 5-1 to start the second half.

        Indians 7, Brewers 5

MILWAUKEE -- Michael Brantley had three hits, including a three-run home run, and Cleveland bullpen allowed only one run over the final 6 1/3 innings.

Brantley, a former Brewers prospect who was shipped to Cleveland in the 2008 trade that brought C.C. Sabathia to Milwaukee, finished a triple short of the cycle and extended his hitting streak to five games as Cleveland ended an eight-game losing streak against Milwaukee.

Brewers first baseman Adam Lind finished with four hits and four RBIs, including a two-run home run in the first inning.

        Rangers 10, Rockies 8

DENVER -- Texas blew an early five-run lead but beat Colorado when Elvis Andrus singled home two runs in the ninth.

The Rockies, who fell behind 5-0 in the second, tied the game at 8 with a four-run eighth. Nick Hundley hit his seventh homer with one out, and Carlos Gonzalez hit his 14th homer, a three-run shot with two outs off Tanner Scheppers (3-2).

Rougned Odor, who atoned for making two errors on the same play in the fourth, finished a double shy of the cycle as he drove in two runs and scored three.

        Giants 7, Padres 1

SAN DIEGO -- Buster Posey lined a two-run double to right field in the seventh inning to propel San Francisco over San Diego.

The Padres led 1-0 after five innings before San Francisco tied the game on Brandon Belt's two-out homer in the sixth and scored three runs in both the seventh and eighth innings -- all against the Padres' bullpen after James Shields had departed.

The Giants' second straight win made a winner of Matt Cain (2-1) and was the reigning World Series champions' eighth win in the last nine games. Cain allowed one run -- a homer by Jedd Gyorko in the second inning -- on five hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out six.

        Yankees 4, Orioles 3

NEW YORK -- Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez homered, leading New York past Baltimore.

The Yankees improved to a season-best 11 games above .500 while beating the Orioles for the fifth time in six games at Yankee Stadium.

Teixeira hit his 24th home run of the season with one out in the first inning off Baltimore right-hander Kevin Gausman (1-2). Rodriguez hit his 20th with one out in the fifth, also off Gausman.

        Reds 9-5, Cubs 1-6

CINCINNATI -- Pinch hitter Taylor Teagarden's RBI single off Cincinnati closer Aroldis Chapman drove home the go-ahead run, lifting the Chicago Cubs to a victory in the second game of a day-night doubleheader.

Joey Votto homered and Mike Leake allowed one run and four hits in eight innings in the Reds' victory in the afternoon game.

Reds left fielder Marlon Byrd prevented the Cubs from scoring the go-ahead run in the eighth inning of the nightcap when he threw out Dexter Fowler attempting to score on Anthony Rizzo's single. The play was reviewed to determine whether Reds catcher Brayan Pena violated the home-plate collision rule, but replay confirmed he did not.

        Tigers 9, Mariners 4

DETROIT -- Nick Castellanos' grand slam highlighted an eight-run, third-inning outburst, and Detroit overcame two Nelson Cruz home runs in a victory over Seattle.

Castellanos' eighth home run of the season helped Anibal Sanchez (10-7) win his seventh consecutive decision. Sanchez allowed four runs and nine hits in 6 2/3 innings while striking out six. Joakim Soria got the last four outs for his 22nd save.

Ian Kinsler contributed four hits, including two during the highest scoring inning of the season for Detroit. He scored twice and knocked in a run.

        Royals 5, Pirates 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Mike Moustakas and Eric Hosmer homered, lifting Kansas City past Pittsburgh.

The Royals scored four runs in the seventh, highlighted by Moustakas' three-run homer with two outs. Jarrod Dyson's safety squeeze bunt single brought home Omar Infante for the first run of the inning.

Right-hander Edinson Volquez (9-5) claimed the victory, holding the Pirates to a run over 7 2/3 innings. He struck out eight, one shy of his season high, and yielded eight hits.

        Astros 4, Red Sox 2

HOUSTON -- Rookie Preston Tucker socked two home runs, and Collin McHugh proved elusive enough to help Houston beat Boston.

Tucker slugged his seventh and eighth home runs of the season and provided the Astros with a four-run lead through five innings. It was the first multi-homer game of his career.

McHugh (11-5) faced 13 batters in the first four innings and then had to weave in and out of trouble to complete seven innings. While McHugh allowed two runs, both in the sixth, he stranded five baserunners between the fifth and seventh, his last inning, to maintain control.

        Cardinals 3, White Sox 2

CHICAGO -- Yadier Molina's bases-clearing triple in the eighth inning helped lift St. Louis to a come-from-behind victory over Chicago.

Molina's liner to the right field corner off David Robertson drove home Randal Grichuk, Pete Kozma and Jason Heyward.

Cardinals reliever Miguel Socolovich (4-1) worked the seventh inning for the win. Trevor Rosenthal pitched a one-two-three ninth for his 29th save.

        Marlins 5, Diamondbacks 3

PHOENIX -- Jose Fernandez struck out a season-high 11 in seven innings, doubled in a run and scored another in Miami's victory over Arizona.

Fernandez (3-0) doubled in the final run of a three-run second inning for a 3-0 lead the Marlins never lost. He gave up five hits and walked two -- his first two walks of the season -- in his fourth start since returning from Tommy John surgery.

J.T. Realmuto and Ichiro Suzuki each had an extra-base hit, drove in a run and scored for the Marlins, who won their second in a row.

        Angels 5, Twins 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Johnny Giavotella and Kole Calhoun combined for half of the Angels' 12 hits, leading Los Angeles past Minnesota. However, the Angels lost third baseman David Freese for at least two weeks with a broken right index finger.

C.J. Wilson (8-7) got the win, but needed help from his bullpen after making 105 pitches in a five-inning outing. Wilson gave up two runs on six hits and two walks, then got stellar relief from Fernando Salas, Trevor Gott, Joe Smith and Huston Street (25th save), who combined to shut out the Twins on three hits over the final four innings.

Street became the 27th pitcher in major league history to record 300 career saves.

        A's 4, Blue Jays 3 (10 innings)

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Pinch hitter Ike Davis' infield single with two outs in the 10th scored Josh Reddick from third base, giving Oakland a victory over Toronto.

The victory came five innings after A's manager Bob Melvin was ejected from the game. Melvin nonetheless was credited with his 369th win as A's manager, moving him into third place on the Oakland list.

Reddick, a late-game replacement, set up Davis' heroics with an opposite-field double with one out in the 10th off Roberto Osuna (1-4). Reddick took third on third baseman Brett Lawrie's grounder before Davis beat out a ground ball to shortstop.

Pirates getting wins in Liriano's home starts

The Pittsburgh Pirates are 4-0 in the last four ball games that Francisco Liriano has starter at PNC Park. The 31-year-old lefty is scheduled to get the ball as the Buccos tangle with the Washington Nationals Thursday.

Those Pirates' wins have come against the Chicago White Sox (11-0), Atlanta Braves (3-2), San Diego Padres (3-2) and, most recently, the St. Louis Cardinals (6-5).

Liriano has figured in the decision just once in those previous four trips to the mound in front of the home fans. He owns a record of just 2-4 in 10 home starts and has an ERA of 3.86.

Dodgers cashing Under bets in Kershaw's starts

The Under has gone 5-0 in the last five Los Angeles Dodgers' games when lefty Clayton Kershaw gets the start. Kershaw is scheduled to take the mound when the Dodgers meet the New York Mets at Citi Field Thursday.

Over the course of those five starts, Kershaw has allowed just five earned runs in 38 innings of work. His last time out, he went eight strong and didn't allow a run as the Dodgers trumped the Washington Nationals 4-2 on July 18 finishing below the closing total of 7.

Yankees slumping with Tichenor behind the plate

The New York Yankees are just 1-4 in their last five ball games with umpire Todd Tichenor calling balls and strikes behind home plate. Tichenor will be working the Yankees' meeting with the Baltimore Orioles Thursday afternoon.

Tichenor has not worked a Yanks' game behind home yet this season, but did work three in 2014. The Yankees went 1-2 in those games, including two losses to the Orioles: 14-5 on April 8 and 2-1 on September 4.

                    Thursday, July 23

                    Hitters wind in Oakland Thursday

There will be a strong 10 mile per hour hitters wind blowing out to right center field today in Oakland when the A's host the Toronto Blue Jays.

Toronto's knuckleballer R.A. Dickey (4.70 ERA, 8-8 O/U) will take the mound, while the A's will counter with left Scott Kazmir (2.38 ERA, 9-8 O/U).

The total for this afternoon's contest is currently at 7.5.

Hitters wind at Yankee Stadium Thursday

The ball could fly out of Yankee Stadium for left-handed hitters Thursday afternoon with a nine mile per hitters wind gusting out to the short porch in right field for Thursday's contest with the Baltimore Orioles.

However, both starters will try their best to make sure this isn't the case.

The Yankees, currently -150 favorites, send Masahiro Tanaka (3.65 ERA, 5-7 O/U) to the mound to take on Baltimore's Ubaldo Jiminez (3.29 ERA, 7-9 O/U). The total is currently at 8.0.

Orioles can't get the job done against right-handers

The Baltimore Orioles just can't get the job done when facing right-handed starters, losing nine of their last 10 games against them.

Excluding a 9-3 win over Detroit's Justin Verlander last week, the Orioles were outscored 41-21 in those games.

They face another tough righty Thursday afternoon, when they visit Masahiro Tanaka (6-3, 3.65 ERA) and the New York Yankees. The Orioles, currently +132 dogs, will counter with Ubaldo Jiminez (7-5, 3.29 ERA).

Angels still red-hot as winning streak continues

The Los Angeles Angels extended their season-long winning streak to seven games by topping the Minnesota Twins 5-2 Wednesday night.

The streak has propelled the Angels to the top of the American League West and at 54-40 now sit two games ahead of the upstart Houston Astros.

The Angels will try to make it eight in a row when they close out their series with the Twins Thursday afternoon. They will send Garret Richards (10-6, 3.24 ERA) to the hill to face off against the Twins Ervin Santana (1-0, 3.66 ERA).

The Angels are currently -166 home favorites.

                    Red Sox's slide continues

The Boston Red Sox's season seems to be quickly coming to an end after losing their seventh consecutive game, falling 4-2 to the Houston Astros Wednesday night.

The Red Sox now sit 11 games behind the first place New York Yankees in the American League East and are dead last in the American League at 42-53.

Boston will try to end their slide Thursday night in Houston, when they send left-hander Wade Miley (8-8, 4.49 ERA) to take on the Astros' righty Lance McCullers (4-3, 2.52 ERA). The Red Sox are currently +126 dogs.

Jays' Dickey will start in place of ailing Hutchison

When Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons disclosed before Wednesday's game that his scheduled pitcher for Thursday, right-hander Drew Hutchison, was ill and a question mark to make the start, he didn't sound all that disappointed.

Nothing against Hutchison, who at 9-2 has one of the best winning percentages in the American League.

Rather, this had everything to do with Monday's travel day.

Because Gibbons elected to retain a five-man rotation following the All-Star break despite a day off just three games into the second half, the Blue Jays had the luxury of pushing right-hander R.A. Dickey and maybe even fellow righty Marco Estrada up a day without cutting into their normal rest period.

And that they did, announcing after the game that Dickey would replace Hutchison as the starter Thursday.

Red Sox's Buchholz to be sidelined indefinitely

HOUSTON -- Already saddled with ineffective starting pitching, the Boston Red Sox revealed on Wednesday that right-hander Clay Buchholz will be sidelined indefinitely after undergoing a platelet-rich plasma injection in his bothersome right elbow.

Buchholz had been the Red Sox's most effective starter. But he landed on the 15-day disabled list on July 11 with a right elbow flexor strain and initially balked at the PRP procedure. But a recent reexamination revealed the same diagnosis and Buchholz, who had been playing catch as part of his rehab, conceded to the injection.

Game of the Day: Royals at Cardinals
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kansas City Royals at St. Louis Cardinals (-137, 7.0)

The two top teams in baseball will square off Thursday night when the Kansas City Royals visit the St. Louis Cardinals in a make-up game from last month. St. Louis, which owns the best home and overall record in the majors, has won the past three meetings in the I-70 Series this season, outscoring the American League-leading Royals 13-3.

The Cardinals are 33-12 at Busch Stadium entering their 11-game homestand and have a chance to put a stranglehold on the National League Central, with their next three opponents after Thursday's matchup a combined 27 games under .500. Kansas City has won 12 of 15 to move a season-high 21 games over .500. Third baseman Mike Moustakas has three homers and eight RBIs in seven games since the All-Star break after going deep only three times in the previous 48 contests. The Royals send Chris Young to the mound to oppose Cardinals right-hander John Lackey, who lost a rain-shortened decision at Kansas City on May 23 before his scheduled start against the Royals last month was washed out.

7:15 p.m. ET, FSN Kansas City, FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

                      LINE HISTORY:
The Cardinals have held steady at their opening number of -137. The total remains at 7.0 runs.

                      INJURY REPORT:

Royals - SP J. Vargas (out for season, elbow), LF A. Gordon (early Sept, groin), SP B. Flynn (60-day DL, back).

Cardinals - RP M. Harris (15-day DL, groin), SP J. Garcia (15-day DL, groin), RP M. Belisle (15-day DL, elbow), CF J. Jay (15-day DL, wrist), RP J. Walden (60-day DL, bicep), SP A. Wainwright (60-day DL, Achillies), 1B M. Adams (60-day DL, quad).

                      WEATHER REPORT:
It should be a clear night in St. Louis, with a very slight 9 percent chance of rain and a five mile per hour wind blowing in from right field.

                      PITCHING MATCHUP:
Royals RH Chris Young (8-5, 3.03 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH John Lackey (8-5, 2.90)

Young lasted only five innings but halted a three-start winless drought in his last outing, allowing two runs on three hits in a 4-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Young has been victimized by the long ball of late, surrendering at least two homers in three of his last six turns. Young, who is 1-3 with a 2.93 ERA lifetime against the Cardinals, has not pitched beyond six innings in each of his last six starts.

Lackey has been on a roll since the rainout versus the Royals last month, registering seven straight quality starts and going 4-1 while permitting a total of nine runs in that span. He gave up 10 hits in seven innings last time out versus the Mets but limited the damage to one run. Lackey has excelled at home this season with a 6-2 mark and 1.91 ERA, but he is only 3-5 with a 3.67 ERA in 11 starts against Kansas City.

                      TRENDS:

                      * Under is 8-1-3 in the last 12 meetings.
                      * Under is 5-1-1 in the last seven meetings in St. Louis.
                      * Cardinals are 8-0 in Lackey's last eight home starts versus a team with a winning record.
                      * Royals are 6-1 in their last seven interleague games.

                      CONSENSUS:
The public is backing the home side, with 65.74 percent of wagers backing the Cardinals at -137.

The home team has gone 14-3 in the last 17 ball games that umpire Jerry Meals has worked behind home plate this season. Meals is scheduled to call balls and strikes in Houston as the Astros host the Boston Red Sox Thursday evening.

Meals is presently ranked No. 3 in our top umpire homer standings, bringing a 15-5 record season-to-date for the home into tonight's matchup.

The Astros are presently being offered around -129 and are expected to start Lance McCullers while Wade Miley is slated to counter for the Red Sox (+119).

MLB betting cheat sheet: Giants making their move

                          Jul 23, 2015

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the weekend major-league schedule:

                          Giants Making Their Move

San Francisco started off the month of July with a seven game losing streak, and it looked as though the Dodgers would run away with the NL West. They've since won nine of 11, moving to within 2.5 games of Los Angeles.

Hunter Pence returned to the lineup on July 7, and he's batting .304 with three home runs and 13 RBIs during that span.

With the Giants hosting Oakland over the weekend, they could gain even more ground on the Dodgers who are on the road in New York.

                          Fish Out Of Water

The Marlins might not be the hottest team in the majors, but if bettors thought that fading the Fish would be easy money after Stanton's injury, they were sadly mistaken.

Miami is 10-10 over it's last 20 games, and they are 4-8 since losing Dee Gordon. That might make you think twice about laying the chalk to bet against Miami.

                          Pujols Turning Back The Clock

The 35 year old has taken over the major league lead with his 28th and 29th home runs in a win over Boston on Monday. Pujols hit a major league best 47 in 2009, and a National League best 42 in 2010.

The Angels host Texas this weekend, and Albert has good numbers against the Rangers' Game 1 starter. Colby Lewis will toe the rubber for the Rangers on Friday, and Pujols is 9-for-20 (.450) with three home runs and seven RBIs lifetime versus the right-hander.

                          Pitching Notes

                          * Zack Greinke's scoreless streak is at 43 2/3 innings, and his next start comes in New York on Friday. He tossed seven scoreless innings in a win over the Mets earlier this year, and he's 2-0 with a 1.89 ERA in three starts against the Mets over the last three seasons.

                          * Felix Hernandez is having himself another stellar season, but he's costing bettors money lately. The right-hander only has one win in his last five starts, and the Mariners have lost six of his last 10. He's scheduled to face the Blue Jays at home on Friday, and he allowed one run on four hits over seven innings in a win over the Jays in Toronto earlier this season. The Jays lineup is hitting just .216 over a combined 241 at bats in past meetings.

                          Hitting Notes

                          * Buster Posey is crushing opposing pitchers here in the month of July, batting .396 with a pair of home runs and 12 RBIs. He'll face right-hander Jesse Chavez in Game 1 on Friday, and he's hitting .329 with a dozen home runs and 55 RBIs versus right-handed pitching this year.

                          * Mark Teixeira is not far off the pace in the home run race, with 24 so far. He's been swinging a hot bat this month, hitting .298 with five home runs and 11 RBIs. He'll face the Twins this weekend, and he's 4-for-7 lifetime versus Tommy Milone, who is scheduled to start Saturday's game.

                          Totals Streak

The Pirates will host the Nationals over the Weekend, and Pittsburgh has seen the total go under at a rate of 18-7-1 in their last 26 home games. The Nats come in banged up, missing several key hitters. It would come as no surprise if we saw a few pitcher's duels at PNC Park.

                          Weather Watch

                          * Forecasts are calling for wind to blow out to centerfield at around 10 miles per hour at Wrigley Field when the Chicago Cubs host the Philadelphia Phillies Friday.

                          * Saturday's forecast shows wind blowing in from right field at around 11 mpm at Fenway Park when the Boston Red Sox host the Detroit Tigers.

                          Injury Notes

                          * Injuries are piling up for the Nats, with Dernard Span, Ryan Zimmerman, Jayson Werth and Anthony Rendon all sidelined with various ailments. They can ill afford to lose Yunel Escobar who leads the team batting .321, but he left Wenesday's game with a sore wrist and wasn't expected to be in Thursday's starting lineup.

                          * David Peralta took a Jose Fernandez fastball to the head on Wednesday night, and he's listed as day to day pending concussion protocol.
