LEADING OFF: All-Star arms, Nola's debut, Who's on first?

    July 21, 2015

A look at what's happening all around the major leagues today:

    ALL-STAR ARMS

National League All-Stars Gerrit Cole and Michael Wacha are both on the mound in interleague games. Cole (13-3) pitches for Pittsburgh against Kansas City lefty Jason Vargas (5-2), set to come off the disabled list. Wacha (10-3) starts for St. Louis against Chicago White Sox rookie Carlos Rodon (3-2).

    FUTURE IS NOW

Prized pitching prospect Aaron Nola makes his major league debut for Philadelphia against Tampa Bay. The 22-year-old righty was selected seventh overall last season out of LSU and will become the first Phillies player since Pat Combs in 1989 to debut in the majors the year after getting drafted. Nola was a combined 10-4 with a 2.39 ERA in 18 starts between Double-A Reading and Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

    ANOTHER PROMOTION

The Cardinals are expected to call up top prospect Steve Piscotty for their interleague series against the White Sox. Drafted 36th overall in 2012, Piscotty has been working to convert from outfield to first base. He was batting .272 with 11 homers and 41 RBIs at Triple-A Memphis.

    PUT ME IN, COACH

Help could be on the way for Atlanta's sagging offense. First baseman Freddie Freeman, out since June 18 with a bruised right wrist, might begin a rehab stint as early as today. Freeman was upbeat after playing catch and taking swings before Monday night's game against the Dodgers. ''He's trying to talk me into putting him into the lineup tonight,'' Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said.

    TOP OF THE EAST

NL Rookie of the Year Jacob deGrom (9-6, 2.14 ERA) makes his first appearance since his terrific All-Star outing - three strikeouts on 10 pitches. He'll try to lead the second-place New York Mets past the NL East-leading Nationals, a team he's never beaten. In three career starts against Washington, deGrom is 0-2 with a 4.15 ERA. The Nationals plan to call up right-hander Joe Ross (2-1, 2.66) for his fourth start in the majors.

    WHO'S ON FIRST?

Playing in a National League park has left Texas without a designated hitter against Colorado. Prince Fielder, who has spent most of the year at DH, started at first base Monday over Mitch Moreland, but manager Jeff Banister said he'll give both players a rest during the three-game series. ''Prince playing in the All-Star Game and going through the home run contest, he does need a day somewhere also,'' Banister said.

    THE TODDFATHER IS BACK

Todd Frazier tries to build upon his first hit since winning the All-Star Game's Home Run Derby at Great American Ball Park. The Reds' third baseman went 0 for 3 in the All-Star Game, and then was 0 for 10 during a weekend series against the Indians. He broke out with a homer in the first inning Monday off Cubs pitcher Clayton Richard. Frazier hasn't homered in back-to-back games since June 16-17.

      July 21, 2015

WASHINGTON (AP) Clint Robinson's two-run double to deep center was the biggest blow as the Nationals jumped on Mets starter Matt Harvey for five runs in the first three innings Monday night, and NL East-leading Washington beat second-place New York 7-2.

A day after leaving 25 men on base and going 1 for 26 with runners in scoring position in an 18-inning victory at St. Louis, the Mets' troubled offense left 10 men on and went 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position.

Indeed, it was Harvey (8-7) who drove in both of New York's runs with a bases-loaded single in the fourth off Gio Gonzalez (7-4). Harvey went seven innings, and was charged with five runs - four earned - and five hits.

Gonzalez allowed two runs and six hits in six innings. Ian Desmond tacked on a two-run homer off Mets reliever Alex Torres in the eighth.

      ANGELS 11, RED SOX 1, 1ST GAME

      ANGELS 7, RED SOX 3, 2ND GAME

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Albert Pujols hit three homers while the Angels swept a doubleheader from the Boston Red Sox, connecting twice and seizing the major league lead from Mike Trout during Los Angeles' victory in the nightcap.

Trout also homered and rookie Andrew Heaney pitched seven strong innings in the second game of the Angels' first home doubleheader since 2003. Pujols, Kole Calhoun and David Freese homered during an 11-1 win in the first game. Pujols homered in both games of a doubleheader for the first time in his career. He caught and passed Mike Schmidt for 15th place in baseball history, hitting his 549th career homer in the seventh.

Heaney (4-0) won his fourth straight decision in his first month with the Angels, yielding five hits without a walk. Knuckleballer Steven Wright (3-3) took the loss.

All-Star Hector Santiago (7-4) matched his career high with 10 strikeouts in the opener. Eduardo Rodriguez (5-3) took the loss.

      REDS 5, CUBS 4

CINCINNATI (AP) - Todd Frazier connected for the first time since he won the All-Star Home Run Derby, and Jay Bruce hit a key two-run shot in the sixth inning, powering the Cincinnati Reds past the Chicago Cubs.

The Reds hit three homers in all, including Marlon Byrd's solo shot, and beat the Cubs at Great American Ball Park for the first time this season. Bruce's drive off Justin Grimm (1-3) put Cincinnati up 5-4 with two outs in the sixth.

Ryan Mattheus (1-1) pitched a hitless inning in relief of Michael Lorenzen. Aroldis Chapman pitched the ninth - a day after he threw a career-high 44 pitches - and retired the side on 13 pitches for his 19th save.

      TIGERS 5, MARINERS 4

DETROIT (AP) - Ian Kinsler homered twice, including a go-ahead two-run shot in the eighth inning, and the Detroit Tigers beat the Seattle Mariners.

Kinsler, who came in with three homer this season, hit one off Seattle starter J.A. Happ in the first, and then drove a fastball from Mark Lowe over the Tigers' bullpen with two out in the eighth. It was his first multi-homer game since Sept. 7, 2011.

Lowe (0-1) hadn't allowed an earned run in his last 12 outings, dating to June 14, but Jose Iglesias doubled with one out, took third on a grounder and scored on Kinsler's homer.

Al Alburquerque (1-0) picked up his first decision in 60 outings, pitching a scoreless eighth inning. Joakim Soria got three outs for his 21st save.

      PHILLIES 5, RAYS 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Cesar Hernandez doubled, tripled and drove in two runs, and David Buchanan earned his first win in almost a year, leading the Philadelphia Phillies over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Maikel Franco had a pair of hits with an RBI and Jeff Francoeur contributed two hits for the Phillies, who have won four straight after setting the franchise record with 62 losses before the All-Star break.

Buchanan (1-5) snapped his winless skid at 15 starts by allowing three runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Logan Forsythe doubled and had two RBIs for the Rays, who have lost 10 of their last 12 road games. Matt Moore (1-1) gave up four runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings in his third start since coming back from Tommy John surgery.

      BRAVES 7, DODGERS 5

ATLANTA (AP) - Nick Markakis hit his first homer of 2015 and scored the go-ahead run on Juan Uribe's fifth-inning single, leading the Atlanta Braves past former teammate Brandon Beachy and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Markakis hit a two-run homer to center field off Beachy in the first inning. It was his first homer since Sept. 25, 2014, for the Orioles at the Yankees. Braves rookie Matt Wisler (4-1) allowed four runs and eight hits in six innings.

Adrian Gonzalez hit a two-run shot and Howie Kendrick doubled in two runs for the Dodgers in the fifth. Beachy, making his second start for the Dodgers following his second Tommy John surgery, allowed four runs and five hits in four innings. Adam Liberatore (2-2) took the loss in relief.

      PIRATES 10, ROYALS 7

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Travis Ishikawa had three extra-base hits and drove in four runs as the Pittsburgh Pirates outslugged the Kansas City Royals.

Ishikawa, who was 1 for 13 with one RBI in nine games since the Pirates claimed him on waivers July 5, hit a two-run double in a four-run second. He homered in the fifth with Jung Ho Kang aboard.

A.J. Burnett (8-3) won despite giving up a season-high five earned runs and 11 hits - including two homers - in his initial start since his first career trip to the All-Star Game. Mark Melancon worked the ninth for his 30th save, including a franchise-record 28 straight.

Mike Moustakas and Kendrys Morales homered for the Royals. Yordano Ventura (4-7) was pulled in the fifth after giving up six runs and 11 hits and a walk.

      ROCKIES 8, RANGERS 7

DENVER (AP) - Ben Paulsen hit a tiebreaking single with one out in the bottom of the ninth, and the Colorado Rockies recovered from blowing a seven-run lead to beat the Texas Rangers.

Troy Tulowitzki homered and Nolan Arenado had two RBIs for Colorado, which has won a season-best five in a row at home.

Prince Fielder had two hits and three RBIs and Adrian Beltre had three hits for the Rangers, who have lost 10 of 12. Beltre's second double of the night tied it at 7 in the ninth against closer John Axford (2-2), but the Rockies rallied in the bottom of the inning against Tanner Scheppers (3-1).

      DIAMONDBACKS 3, MARLINS 1

PHOENIX (AP) - Rubby De La Rosa went seven innings for his first win in five starts, David Peralta singled in two runs and the Arizona Diamondbacks snapped a six-game losing streak by sending the Marlins to their fourth loss in a row.

De La Rosa (7-5) allowed a run on five hits, overcame a season-high five walks and got his second RBI of the season by hitting into a bases-loaded fielder's choice. Peralta's two-out, bases-loaded single off David Phelps (4-6) in the third provided the only runs needed by the Diamondbacks.

Derek Dietrich homered for the Marlins.

      PADRES 4, GIANTS 2

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Matt Kemp hit a two-run homer to help the San Diego Padres beat the World Series champion San Francisco Giants and extend their winning streak to a season-high five games.

Kemp's 409-foot drive off 40-year-old Tim Hudson (5-8) into the sandy play area beyond the right-center fence in the third inning was his fourth homer in seven games and 10th overall.

Ian Kennedy (5-9) pitched six strong innings to snap a four-start losing streak and end the Giants' six-game winning streak. Craig Kimbrel threw a perfect ninth on four pitches for his 26th save.

Gregor Blanco homered for the Giants. Hudson (5-8) came off the disabled list to make the start. He allowed three runs and five hits in four-plus innings.

MLB betting cheat sheet: Greinke still untouchable
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the mid-week major-league schedule:

        Greinke Still Untouchable

Zack Greinke tossed eight scoreless innings, striking out 11 in a win opposite Mad Max Scherzer in the nation's capital on Sunday, and his scoreless streak now sits at 43 2/3 innings. It's fair to say that he's currently the favorite to win the Cy Young Award in the National League. His miniscule 1.30 ERA isn't just the best in the majors, but he's the only pitcher with an ERA under 2.00.

        Home Cookin' At Turner Field

The Atlanta Braves are a solid 24-19 at home, and they'll host the Dodgers in a three game set at Turner Field. The Dodgers have a losing record on the road this year, yet they are heavily favored in both of the first two games of this series. That might change in the series finale on Wednesday, with Julio Teheran looking to remain perfect at home this season. Teheran is 5-0 with a 2.18 ERA in nine starts at home, and the Braves have won seven of those games.

        Road Warriors

The San Francisco Giants will play a three game series at PETCO this week, and over bettors should take notice. The Giants lead the major league batting .278 on the road this year, and in case you haven't already heard, San Diego is becoming a hitter's paradise. According to ESPN Park Factors, PETCO ranks 5th behind Coors Field, Great American Ballpark, Camden Yards and Yankee Stadium. You don't often see totals of 6.5 in any of those parks, but low totals are still the norm in San Diego.

        Pitching Notes

*Jorge De La Rosa has quietly been returning to form for Colorado. He got off to a slow start, but he's pitched well in his last 10 starts, and the Rockies have won eight of those 10 games. He's been one of the best home pitchers in baseball over the last three seasons, going 20-3 with a 2.98 ERA at Coors Field since 2012. His next start comes at home against Texas on Wednesday.

*Mark Buehrle remains one of the most dependable pitchers in the game, and he closed out a stellar first half in style with a win over the Royals in Kansas City. He's coming off eight straight quality starts, and he'll go for his 11th win on the road at Oakland Tuesday.

        Hitting Notes

*J.D. Martinez is swinging a hot bat in the month of July, batting .333 with six home runs and a dozen RBIs. The Tigers are playing a home series versus Seattle this week, and that's good news for Martinez who is hitting .311 at home so far this season.

*Paul Goldschmidt leads the National League with 72 RBIs, and he's batting a major league best .340. The D'backs slugger will likely remain hot at home in this series versus Miami, as he's hitting .346 at Chase Field.

        Totals Streak

The Blue Jays are popular with bettors as they have been by far the highest scoring team in the major league's this season. Despite all the home runs and all the impressive offensive numbers, they have actually been trending toward the under. Toronto has seen the total fall short of the number at a rate of 7-2-1 in their last 10 overall, and they have played eight straight unders against Oakland.

        Injury Notes

*The Pirates have placed SS Jordy Mercer on the DL with a sprained MCL, and he's expected to miss at least six weeks. It's a big blow for the Pirates who are already missing Josh Harrison who is recovering from surgery to repair his left thumb.

*Justin Upton left Sunday's game in the 5th inning due to back tightness, and is considered day to day.

Game of the Day: Cardinals at White Sox
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago White Sox (+120, 8)

After enjoying a day off following an 18-inning marathon, the St. Louis Cardinals look to return to their winning ways when they open an abbreviated two-game interleague series at the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday. Kolten Wong belted a solo homer to lead off the 13th frame, but St. Louis failed to come up with other big hits in a 3-1 setback to the New York Mets on Sunday.

All-Star shortstop Jhonny Peralta is 12-for-28 with two homers in his last six games, but the majors-best Cardinals have only a 2-4 mark to show for it. Michael Wacha will get the nod on Tuesday after originally-scheduled starter Carlos Martinez was pressed into duty in the marathon loss to the Mets. "We're going to play on Tuesday," manager Robin Ventura said after Chicago found itself in the basement of the American League Central with four losses in its last five contests. "I know everybody wants to talk about (selling at the trade deadline), but we're going to play as hard as we can against St. Louis."

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, FSN Midwest (Chicago), WPWR (Chicago)

LINE HISTORY: As of this writing, oddsmakers had not moved off their opening number of White Sox +120.

          INJURY REPORT: St. Louis - J. Heyward (questionable), J. Garcia (15-day DL), M. Haris (15-day DL), M. Harris (15-day DL), M. Belisle (15-day DL), J. Jay (15-day DL), J. Walden (60-day DL), A. Wainwright (60-day DL), M. Adams (60-day DL). Chicago - N. Jones (60-day DL).

WEATHER WATCH: It's expected to be a clear day in the Chicago area with temperatures of 77 degrees Fahrenheit at game time.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (10-3, 2.93 ERA) vs. White Sox LH Carlos Rodon (3-2, 3.80)

Wacha walked away with his second straight no-decision on July 8 despite allowing a season high-tying five runs in six innings of St. Louis' 6-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs. The 24-year-old also yielded five runs in a setback to Philadelphia on June 21, but followed that up with two strong outings. Wacha has yet to face the White Sox in his career.

Rodon worked his way out of trouble despite matching a season high with six walks in as many scoreless innings en route to a no-decision versus the Cubs on July 10. The 22-year-old only allowed two hits in the outing, but remained winless in his last three starts. Rodon has pitched well at home during his rookie season, posting a 3-1 mark with a 2.87 ERA heading into his first career start versus St. Louis.

          TRENDS:

*Cardinals are 0-4 in their last 4 interleague games.
*Under is 6-1-1 in White Sox last 8 overall.
*Cardinals are 0-4 in the last 4 meetings in Chicago.
*Cardinals are 9-2 in Wachas last 11 road starts.

CONSENSUS: Fifty-nine percent of users are currently on the Cards.

            Royals activate RHP Medlen

The Kansas City Royals activated right-hander Kris Medlen from the disabled list Monday and sent right-hander Yohan Pino to Triple-A Omaha.

Nationals face one star pitcher after another

WASHINGTON -- The short-handed Washington Nationals offense is catching no breaks.

Without several top hitters, the Nationals will have to face New York Mets All-Star right-hander Jacob deGrom on Tuesday in the second game of a three-game series.

In the previous three games, the Nationals faced Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke of the Dodgers and Matt Harvey of the Mets.

The three combined to allow four earned runs in 23 innings against Washington, which has regulars Anthony Rendon, Jayson Werth, Ryan Zimmerman and Denard Span on the disabled list. The Nationals did manage to beat Harvey and the Mets 7-2 Monday.

            Giants' Lincecum has hip problems

SAN DIEGO -- It's clear Tim Lincecum's arm is not what it once was.

That goes for his hips, too.

Lincecum, who is on the disabled list with a bruised right forearm, returned on Monday from Tennessee where he saw a hip specialist.

"HIs arm is fine, but there was stuff going on in there (with his hips),'' manager Bruce Bochy said.

The MRI, according to Bochy, showed degenerative issues with the hips. "Which is normal for athletes,'' Bochy said.

Lincecum is 7-4 with a 4.13 ERA over 15 starts.

"He's going to rest for five days or so and then he will resume throwing,'' Bochy said.

Nola to make debut for Phillies on Tuesday

PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Phillies, owners of the major leagues' worst record, created some buzz by announcing last week that right-hander Aaron Nola, their No. 1 draft pick in June 2014, would make his debut with a start against Tampa Bay on Tuesday.

Nola arrived in Philadelphia on Monday, and while he said he's "just ready to get things started around here," sounded nothing like a savior.

"I just want to be the best that I can be," he said. "I want to go out there and give it everything I have and every time I step in between the lines, try to keep the team in the game and give them the best chance to win."

Nola was 7-3 with a 1.88 ERA in 12 starts at Reading this season, and 3-1 with a 3.58 ERA in six starts for Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Dodgers place C Ellis on DL, recall C Barnes

The Los Angeles Dodgers, already without catcher Yasmani Grandal, placed catcher A.J. Ellis on the 15-day disabled list Monday with inflammation in his right knee.

The Dodgers recalled catcher Austin Barnes from Triple-A Oklahoma City, and he started Monday night.

Ellis felt tightness in the knee on the team plane Sunday night. An MRI on Monday showed no structural damage, but manager Don Mattingly said Ellis can't crouch into position.

"No real structural damage, just knee inflammation," Mattingly said. "(He) actually did pretty good today. I know he was trying to stay off that (DL).

"He was able to hit and throw -- pretty much do everything but get into the deep crouch. And that's really the one thing we've got to be able to do."

Grandal was hit in the mask by a pitch Sunday. X-rays of his jaw were negative, and he is expected to return Wednesday.

Mariners struggle with Nelson calling pitches

The Seattle Mariners are just 2-10 in their last 12 ball games when Jeff Nelson is umpiring behind home plate - a spot he'll be when the Mariners visit the Detroit Tigers Tuesday evening.

That drought includes a 4-2 loss to the Los Angeles Angels back on June 27 of this season.

Nelson is currently the top homer umpire in Major League Baseball with home teams earning a 15-3 record in the 18 ball games he has worked behind the dish.

Taijuan Walker is expected to start for the Mariners (-125) while the home team turns to Shane Greene (+115).

Tigers could be buyers or sellers

                            Jul 20, 2015

DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers could look a whole lot different by the end of the month. Their success over the next week will likely determine their course of action.

They fell below .500 for the first time since the third game of the 2013 season when they dropped two out of three to Baltimore over the weekend. Their four-game series against Seattle started off in promising fashion on Monday, as Ian Kinsler hit a game-winning, two-run homer in the eighth for a 5-4 victory.

Following the homestand, the Tigers begin a 10-game road trip this weekend in Boston.

There's a lot of catching up to do to get back in the playoff hunt. They entered the week trailing Kansas City by 10 1/2 games in the American League Central and were 4 1/2 games behind in the chase for one of the two wild-card berths.

Winning the series against the equally struggling Mariners is imperative to prevent general manager Dave Dombrowski from going into fire sale mode.

"This time of the year, a couple of wins in a row changes your whole perspective," manager Brad Ausmus said. "You come down to the trading deadline and lose a couple, you're a seller. You win a couple, you're a buyer, especially if you're in the neighborhood of .500."

The Tigers have plenty of prominent players in their walk years, most notably ace David Price and Yoenis Cespedes, who could bring back prospects in a deal. Closer Joakim Soria and catcher Alex Avila could also attract interest if the club waves the white flag.

Ausmus hopes that doesn't come to fruition.

"It's not an uplifting experience when you're trading extremely talented players," he said. "Hopefully, we put some wins together and that doesn't happen. No one wants to be on a team where they're saying, 'Ah, we're going to have to trade away some guys.' You'd much rather be acquiring at the deadline than trading."

If the Tigers can string some wins together, Dombrowski could be motivated to make an aggressive move, as he did last trade deadline when he acquired Price. The team desperately needs another starter or two and another reliable bullpen option.

"I wish I was sitting here telling you that we have such a comfortable lead that we don't even need to buy. But that's not the case," Ausmus said. "We're trying to win and those decisions are made above our heads. But sometimes, the best move is to not do anything."

Rays' slump takes them below .500

                              Jul 20, 2015

PHILADELPHIA -- It is never any one thing when a major league team loses 18 of 25 games, as the Tampa Bay Rays have, the latest defeat coming by a 5-3 score Monday night in Philadelphia.

It is usually a combination of things.

On Monday, they managed just six hits, three in the final seven innings. No surprise there, as they have had offensive woes all season. They have scored the third-fewest runs in the majors.

Starter Matt Moore, making his fourth start after missing most of last season following Tommy John surgery, frittered away a 2-0 lead by allowing three runs in the second and another in the Phillies' two-run fifth.

And first baseman James Loney, normally sure-handed, made two errors in the fateful fifth.

So it is that the Rays, 40-30 on June 20, are now 47-48.

"We didn't pitch well and we didn't hit well," manager Kevin Cash said. "We didn't do much to win the game."

                              Moore was particularly peeved.

"A starting pitcher has to do a better job there (in the second inning)," he said. "We had a 2-0 lead. I wanted to keep them off the board and they got a three-spot."

There is, at least, no sign of panic.

"We've still got 2 1/2 months to go," center fielder Kevin Kiermaier said. "It's time to get a winning streak going and start to feel good about ourselves."

Padres continue search for a shortstop

                                Jul 21, 2015

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Padres' revolving door at shortstop continues two twirl.

The starter at shortstop on Monday as San Diego opened a three-game series with the San Francisco Giants was Alexi Amarista.

That's the same player interim manager Pat Murphy recently said was going to be more of a utility role player.

"You have to play the utility players, too,'' Murphy said.

But Amarista's start came less than 24 hours after Will Middlebrooks committed two errors at shortstop in a game that didn't last five innings before being called for rain. Middlebrooks, usually a third baseman, is being asked to switch positions at the major-league level in midseason.

"That's not easy,'' Murphy said, and Middlebrooks proved that against the Rockies.

But Middlebrooks, an athletic player, also has made some nice plays at short. It was believed he and Clint Barmes would split time for the foreseeable future. That includes a future where the Padres might acquire a shortstop if, as expected, they are active at the trade deadline.

But it wasn't a good look Sunday for a team that claims it can make a playoff run. That's hard to do without a reliable shortstop, and the Padres still seek just that.

"We knew there were going to be days like that and you saw it first-hand,'' Murphy said of Middlebrooks' struggles.

Amarista committed an error on Monday.
