    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Phil Steele's preseason rankings for the American Conference East Division.....

    6) South Florida-- 5-111 in AAC under Taggart, has only 11 starters back......

    5) UConn-- 2-10 as home favorites since '11; -28 in turnovers since '12.

    4) East Carolina-- 26-13 last three years, but they're 1-4 in last five bowls.

    3) UCF-- Are 22-2 in last 24 league games, but have only nine starters back

    2) Temple-- 19 starters back, are 30-19 vs spread in last 49 games as a dog.

    1) Cincinnati-- Have 13 starters back and a rewly remodeled Nippert Stadium.

    **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday......

    13) Greetings from Las Vegas, where I am on vacation; some of these articles may be posted at odd times as opposed to the way things are normally done. It is fun here.

    12) 67,000 people paid $4 apiece to crowd into Lambeau Field to honor Brett Favre as he was inducted into the Packers' Hall of Fame. Looked like a cool event.

    11) Favre won 186 regular season games; Peyton Manning has 179 wins, so he'll probably pass Favre into the #1 spot on the list this season.

    10) Sign of the times; George Mason's basketball gym will now be called EagleBank Arena; they're getting $6.6M for ten years for naming rights.

    9) Where does this money go? Well, new basketball coach Dave Paulsen is making $700K a year for the next five years- the AD at Mason makes $300K. Paulsen was a D-III coach less than ten years ago-- timing is everything in life.

    8) Why is golf going to be an Olympic sport? I don't want to hear the word "amateur" at all during the Olympics, if Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth are playing.

    7) 22% of the Indians runs this year reached base via a walk. Thats a lot.

    6) Rick Porcello is 5-10 with a 5.79 ERA; he is getting paid $20M+ a year. Which of the Ivy League geniuses in Boston is taking credit for this debacle?

    5) I never knew it was legal to kick the ball over the net in volleyball.

    4) Clayton Kershaw induced 30 misses on 61 Washington swings; he made National hitters look like Little Leaguers. He almost didn't make the All-Star team. Oy.

    3) Phillies' pitchers are walking 4.1 batters per game, only major league team over four walks a game.

    2) Seth Curry is scoring 25 ppg in the NBA Summer League for the Pelicans.

    1) One of the highlights of any Saturday night here in Las Vegas is watching all the young people stagger back thru the lobby after a night of partying; the young girls who aren't used to dressng up a lot are all limping in their high heels, like their achilles tendons are about to rip. How do women walk in heels that high?

MLB roundup: Lester toys with no-no, Cubs beat Braves

ATLANTA -- Jon Lester snapped a pair of losing streaks while taking a no-hit bid into the eighth inning in the process.

The left-hander ended up allowing two singles over 7 1/3 innings and Chicago Cubs defeated the Atlanta Braves 4-0 on Saturday night before 45,758 at Turner Field.

The victory snapped a six-game losing streak for Lester, who hadn't won since May 16, and ended a stretch of eight consecutive losses by the Cubs in Atlanta.

Catcher A.J. Pierzynski broke up the no-hit bid by Lester when he lined a 1-0 belt-high cutter into right field leading off the eighth inning.

Third baseman Juan Uribe then hit a long drive to center field and Lester was pulled after 110 pitches when shortstop Andrelton Simmons followed with a single.

          Athletics 3, Twins 2, 10 innings

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Billy Burns doubled, stole third and scored when All-Star Stephen Vogt singled through a drawn-in infield to give Oakland the win over Minnesota.

The A's won for the third time in four games with their second walk-off win of the year against Casey Fein.

Drew Pomeranz earned the win for the A's.

          Padres 5, Rockies 4

SAN DIEGO -- Home runs by Clint Barmes and Austin Hedges led San Diego past Colorado at Petco Park.

Barmes, a former Rockies shortstop, smacked a two-run shot in the seventh inning off reliever Tommy Kahnle to break the 3-3 tie. It was the Padres' fifth homer in 16 innings as they won their season-high fifth straight game.

Brandon Mauer recorded an out in the seventh for the win. Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in the ninth for his 25th save in 26 chances.

          Giants 8, Diamondbacks 4

PHOENIX -- San Francisco's Buster Posey had three hits and four RBIs and Jake Peavy got his first win of the season at Chase Field.

Posey hit a two-run single in the third inning and singled in a run in the fourth as the Giants built a 7-1 lead. He also singled in a run in the eighth inning as the Giants won their fourth straight.

Peavy gave up four runs in 6 1/3 innings in his fifth start of the season since missing two months with a back injury. His last three victories have come against Arizona, the previous two on Sept. 11 and Sept. 16, 2014.

          Angels 3, Red Sox 0

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Garrett Richards pitched a two-hit shutout to lead Los Angeles Angels over Boston in front of 43,631 at Angel Stadium.

Richards retired the final 15 batters he faced and 22 of the last 23. He induced 11 groundouts and registered six strikeouts while conceding only one walk.

Kole Calhoun contributed the first multihomer game of his career. Calhoun hit two home runs and drove in two runs before finishing 3-for-3 with a walk.

          Dodgers 4, Nationals 2

Nationals 5, Dodgers 3 (suspended game)

WASHINGTON -- All-Star Clayton Kershaw, pitching in the shadows late in the afternoon, struck out a season-high 14 batters with no walks and allowed three singles in eight innings as Los Angeles beat Washington Nationals before a sellout crowd of 41,426.

In the suspended game that ended earlier Saturday, the Nationals won 5-3 when pinch-hitter Matt den Dekker hit a tie-breaking two-run home run in the eighth inning.

It was the 15th win in 21 games for Washington.

But the Nationals were no match for Kershaw later in the day, as he fanned two batters in each of the first seven innings. He struck out Bryce Harper, a fellow All-Star, all three times.

Kershaw leads the National League with 174 strikeouts and has fanned 27 batters in his last two starts with no walks. His 100th pitch of the day was a curve at 73 mph for a called third strike against Den Dekker with two out in the eighth.

          Phillies 3, Marlins 1

PHILADELPHIA -- Chad Billingsley, continuing his comeback from arm problems, pitched five shutout innings as Philadelphia beat Miami.

It was the second victory in three starts for Billingsley, who missed nearly two seasons after undergoing Tommy John surgery in April 2013. The former Los Angeles Dodger made three starts for the Phillies in May, then missed six weeks with a strained right shoulder.

He gave up several hard-hit balls but just four hits. He struck out two and walked one. Jonathan Papelbon worked a scoreless ninth for his 15th save in as many opportunities.

          Orioles 3, Tigers 0

DETROIT -- Chris Tillman tossed eight scoreless innings, retiring the last 23 batters he faced, and All-Star Manny Machado homered to lead Baltimore over Detroit at Comerica Park.

Tillman gave up a leadoff single to second baseman Ian Kinsler and a one-out walk to Victor Martinez, then did not allow another runner.

Tillman also struck out a season high eight and is now 4-0 in his career against Detroit.

          Indians 9, Reds 4

CINCINNATI – Cleveland's Corey Kluber limited Cincinnati to three runs and seven hits over 7-2/3 innings while Anthony DeSclafani gave up six runs and five extra-base hits, including a three-run home run by Michael Brantley and two-run shot by right fielder Brandon Moss.

Catcher Yan Gomes added his fourth homer, a three-shot off of Nate Adcock in the seventh, as the Indians matched their single-game season high in home runs while scoring their most runs since beating Texas, 12-3, on May 27.

Kluber, who was 1-5 in his previous eight starts, finished with one walk and five strikeouts as the Indians snapped a three-game losing streak.

          Cardinals 12, Mets 2

ST. LOUIS -- Jason Heyward and the St. Louis offense broke out with an all-out assault in the run column.

Heyward went 5-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs as St. Louis bombed Mets starter Bartolo Colon for the second time this year in a rout at sold-out Busch Stadium.

Heyward finished his evening with a ground-ball single off reliever Alex Torres in the bottom of the eighth, accomplishing the second five-hit game of his career.

          Rangers 7, Astros 6

HOUSTON -- Rougned Odor finished a double short of the cycle and sparked a ninth-inning rally that clinched Texas' win over Houston at Minute Maid Park.

After the Astros closed to within 5-4 with three runs in the eighth inning, all coming with two outs, Odor ignited a bench-clearing scrum when he exchanged words with Astros catcher Hank Conger. When the dust settled Odor laced a leadoff triple to straightaway center field and scored when third baseman Adrian Beltre followed with a one-out single. Right fielder Josh Hamilton, who recorded three hits in his final three at-bats, added a double to score Beltre.

Conger answered in the bottom of the ninth with a two-run, opposite-field home run off Shawn Tolleson. But Tolleson recovered to record three consecutive outs and notch his 14th save.

          Brewers 8, Pirates 5

MILWAUKEE -- Jimmy Nelson struck out eight while Jonathan Lucory, Aramis Ramirez and Khris Davis hit home runs to power Milwaukee over Pittsburgh at Miller Park.

Nelson overcame a rough first inning to work into the seventh. He gave up seven hits and three walks and won for the fourth time in five starts.

Davis was a late scratch from the starting lineup but came on as a pinch-hitter in the seventh. He gave the Brewers an insurance run with a solo homer off right-hander Antonio Bastardo. Right-hander Francisco Rodriguez closed it out for his 21st save of the season.

          Mariners 4, Yankees 3

NEW YORK -- Robinson Cano hit a pair of two-run homers against his former team, leading Seattle past New York.

Playing in his fifth game at Yankee Stadium since signing a 10-year, $240 million contract with Seattle, Cano heard boos each time his name was mentioned over the public address system.

While Yankee fans might have jeered Cano, there was nothing but cheers in the Seattle dugout for his two big swings. Both came against former Mariners product Michael Pineda's fastball and resulted in Cano's first multihome run game as a Mariner.

          Royals 7, White Sox 6 (13 innings)

CHICAGO -- Kansas City coughed up three leads, but the fourth stood up.

After leading 3-0, 4-3 and 6-4, the Royals went ahead for good in the 13th inning on Lorenzo Cain's leadoff home run.

Chicago's Geovany Soto had nearly ended the game in the 12th with a long shot that hit the base of the wall in left-center field for a two-out double.

The White Sox were down to their final out in the ninth trailing 6-4 lead, but J.B. Shuck's double scored Gordon Beckham and Alexei Ramirez to send the game to extra innings.

          Rays 3, Blue Jays 2

TORONTO -- Curt Casali led off the eighth inning with his second home run of the season to lift Tampa Bay over Toronto.

Casali's home run came on a 1-and-0 splitter from Blue Jays right-handed reliever Ryan Tepera (0-1).

Rays right-handed reliever Kevin Jepsen (2-5) pitched the seventh to pick up the win. After right-hander Brad Boxberger pitched the eighth for the Rays, left-hander Jake McGee pitched the ninth to earn his fourth save of the season.

The Boston Red Sox figured out how to keep Mike Trout from dominating a game but forgot to bring their own offense. The Red Sox will try to score at least their first run of the series when they visit the Los Angeles Angels for the third contest of their four-game series on Sunday.

Trout, who hit a walk-off homer in Friday’s 1-0 series-opening win, went 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts on Saturday, but Kole Calhoun took over with a pair of solo blasts and the Angels went on to grab a 3-0 victory behind Garrett Richards’ shutout. Boston, which averaged 5.9 runs in the nine games leading up to the All-Star break, totaled seven hits in the first two games of the series. The Angels are winners of 13 of their last 16 and sit atop the American League West. The Red Sox will turn to rookie Eduardo Rodriguez to start on Sunday while the offense attempts to figure its way against All-Star Hector Santiago.

Rodriguez is 2-0 over his last three starts, allowing a total of four runs over 17 1/3 innings in that span. The Venezuelan rookie surrendered two runs – a pair of solo homers – in a win over the New York Yankees last Saturday but has not completed seven frames since June 3. Rodriguez, who is making his first appearance against Los Angeles, is 3-0 with a 0.69 ERA in four career road starts.

Santiago was a late addition to the American League All-Star roster in place of Oakland’s Sonny Gray, earning the nod after surrendering a total of three runs in 27 innings over his last four starts. The 27-year-old struck out seven and scattered one runs and eight hits over seven frames to win at Seattle on July 10. Santiago lost at Boston on May 24, when he allowed three runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings, to fall to 0-3 in five career games against the Red Sox.

Greinke has been impenetrable in day games

There's no debating Zack Greinke's importance to the Los Angeles Dodgers this season, but he's been particularly exceptional during daytime games.

In three matinee starts, Greinke is 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 22.2 innings of work. The 31-year-old has allowed 13 hits while fanning 17 batters during that span.

Greinke has also won all three of his July outings without allowing an earned run. He'll get the nod Sunday in D.C. against Max Scherzer and the Washington Nationals at 1:35 p.m. ET.

As of this writing, the line and total were off the board.

Arrieta has been lights out during July for the Cubs

Jake Arrieta will be happy to get back to the mound after the All-Star break as the Chicago Cubs pitcher is 3-0 in his three starts in July.

The righty has been pitching his best ball of the season with a 1.52 ERA and a 20/2 strikeout-to-walk ratio in his past three starts.

The Cubs, currently -143 favorites, visit the Atlanta Braves to end their three-game series Sunday.

Hitters wind at Comerica Park Sunday

Look for balls to carry at when the Detroit Tigers host the Baltimore Orioles at Comerica Park Sunday, with a 12 mile per hour wind gusting towards left field.

There will also be a 34 percent chance of rain and a chance of thunderstorms in the area.

Balitmore's Miguel Gonzalez (4.24 ERA, 8-8 O/U) takes on the Tigers Justin Verlander (5.34 ERA, 5-0 O/U). The Tigers are slight -114 favorites seeing a total of 9.0.

Not a pretty forecast at Great American Ball Park

There is plenty of weather on tap for today's matchup between the Cincinnati Reds and the Cleveland Indians at the Great American Ball Park.

There is a chance of thunderstorms, a 59 percent chance of rain and a six mile per hour wind blowing out to left field.

The Reds are slight -110 favorites and send ace Johnny Cueto (2.73 ERA, 6-9 O/U) to the hill to take on the Indians Carlos Carrasco( 4.07 ERA, 12-6 O/U). The total is currently 7.0 runs.

                      Sabathia feasts on Mariners

New York Yankees starter C.C. Sabathia may not be the pitcher he once was, but if there is still a team he loves to go up against, it's the Seattle Mariners.

The Yanks are 10-1 in Sabathia's last 11 starts against the Mariners, while Sabathia himself is 12-5 in 23 career starts against the M's with an ERA of 2.65.

The only downside to their matchup Sunday is that Sabathia (5.47 ERA, 10-7 O/U) and the Yanks must go up against Felix Hernandez (2.84 ERA, 4-13 O/U). The Yankees are currently +118 dogs with a total of 8.0.

                      Orioles struggling against right-handers

The Baltimore Orioles have dropped seven consecutive games when they have gone up against a right-handed starter, having been outscored 34-16 in those seven games.

That is exactly what they will face Sunday when they go up against Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers, at Comerica Park Sunday.

The Orioles will send Miguel Gonzalez to the hill in hopes of ending the skid, where they are currently +105 dogs versus the Tigers.
