LEADING OFF: Greinke's shutout streak, King Felix vs Yankees

      July 19, 2015

A look at what's happening all around the major leagues today:

      ZACK'S ZEROS

Dodgers ace Zack Greinke takes a shutout streak of 35 2/3 innings into his start at Washington. He gave a home run to Mike Trout leading off the All-Star Game, but those stats don't count in the regular season. Greinke leads the majors with a 1.39 ERA. Orel Hershiser set the big league record for the longest scoreless streak at 59 innings in 1988.

      KING OF THE BRONX

Felix Hernandez has looked like visiting royalty at the newest version of Yankee Stadium, going 5-1 with a 1.37 ERA. There is one player who gives King Felix trouble, though: Mark Teixeira is 20 for 66 (.303) with six homers and 13 RBIs overall against the Seattle ace.

      LAST TIME?

Cole Hamels could be making his final home start for Philadelphia when he faces the Marlins. At 5-7, the lefty is trying for his first win since May 24. The last-place Phillies figure to field plenty of inquiries about the 2008 World Series MVP before the July 31 trade deadline.

      MORE INFO, PLEASE

The Pirates might find out how Francisco Liriano is feeling after the left-hander was scratched minutes before his Saturday night start at Milwaukee because of neck tightness. Liriano had made all 18 of his previously scheduled starts this season.

      CHECK HIM

Miami right-hander Jarred Cosart will be examined by a doctor in New Orleans because of recent dizziness while pitching. He went on the disabled list in May with vertigo

        Baseball Capsules

        July 19, 2015

CHICAGO (AP) Lorenzo Cain homered in the 13th inning and the Kansas City Royals outlasted the Chicago White Sox 7-6 Saturday in a game that took nearly five hours.

The AL Central-leading Royals won for the 10th time in 13 games.

Cain doubled and singled early, then led off the 13th with his ninth home run of the season. He connected against Dan Jennings (1-3).

Brandon Finnegan (3-0) pitched two scoreless innings in the four-hour, 56-minute game. Ryan Madson earned his first save in three chances after allowing a single in the 13th.

The Royals finished with 17 hits, including five doubles.

        CUBS 4, BRAVES 0

ATLANTA (AP) - Jon Lester lost his bid for a no-hitter in the eighth inning - a try revived by an official scorer's reversal - but ended the longest winless streak of his career as Chicago beat Atlanta.

A chopper in the first inning by Atlanta's Nick Markakis was originally ruled a hit, then the scorer changed it in the top of the seventh to an error on third baseman Kris Bryant.

A.J. Pierzynski, Lester's batterymate in Boston last year, led off the eighth with a line-drive single to right field for Atlanta's first hit. With one out, Andrelton Simmons' single up the middle chased Lester.

Lester (5-8) had gone 10 starts without a win. The lefty pitched a no-hitter for the Red Sox in 2008 against Kansas City.

The Cubs had lost eight straight at Turner Field dating to 2012.

Manny Banuelos (1-1) took the loss.

        MARINERS 4, YANKEES 3

NEW YORK (AP) - Robinson Cano snapped a season-long slump with a pair of two-run homers against his former team, Hisashi Iwakuma pitched neatly into the sixth and Seattle held on for the win.

Batting .249 with just six homers and 30 RBIs coming in, Cano has taken the brunt of the blame for the Mariners' subpar first half. But he came out swinging against the team he spurned for a huge contract with Seattle before the 2014 season.

The second baseman responded to hearty first-inning boos with a blast off Michael Pineda (9-6) over the center field wall with Kyle Seager aboard, helping the Mariners end a seven-game skid against New York.

Brian McCann hit a tying two-out, two-run shot off Iwakuma (2-1) in the fourth.

Carson Smith gave up an RBI grounder to Garrett Jones in the ninth before getting Didi Gregorius to ground out to Cano with the tying run on second base for his seventh save.

        ORIOLES 3, TIGERS 0

DETROIT (AP) - Chris Tillman gave up a leadoff single and not much else and combined with Zach Britton on a one-hitter to lead Detroit.

Ian Kinsler cleanly singled to right-center field to open the bottom of the first. Victor Martinez walked later that inning, but Detroit didn't manage a single baserunner after that.

Tillman (7-7) retired the last 23 hitters he faced and struck out eight overall in eight innings. Britton pitched a perfect ninth for his 24th save in 25 chances.

Manny Machado homered off David Price (9-3). The Tigers lefty struck out 12 in seven innings.

DODGERS 4, NATIONALS 2; NATIONALS 5, DODGERS 3, comp. of susp. game.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Clayton Kershaw struck out a season-high 14 in eight shutout innings and Los Angeles earned a split of the two games decided on the day.

Kershaw (7-6), coming off a shutout of the Phillies, scattered three singles and didn't walk a batter. The lefty has won six straight starts against Washington, fashioning an 0.96 ERA in the process.

Bryce Harper struck three times against Kershaw, but hit a two-run homer in the ninth off reliever Kenley Jansen. It was Harper's 27th of the season.

Doug Fister (3-5) allowed four runs and nine hits over five innings.

Hours earlier, pinch-hitter Matt den Dekker lined a two-run homer in the eighth inning that lifted the Nationals over the Dodgers 5-3 in the completion of a game suspended a day earlier after the fifth because of a lighting malfunction with Washington ahead 3-2.

        RAYS 3, BLUE JAYS 2

TORONTO (AP) - Curt Casali hit a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning to lead Tampa Bay.

Facing Ryan Tepera (0-1), Casali led off with a drive into the left-field bullpen, his second of the season and first since June 17.

Brandon Guyer also connected as the Rays won for the eighth time in 12 meetings with Toronto this season.

Jose Bautista homered for the Blue Jays, who fell to 10-19 in one-run games.

Kevin Jepsen (2-5) worked one inning for the win, Brad Boxberger pitched out of a jam in the eighth and Jake McGee finished for his fourth save.

        PHILLIES 3, MARLINS 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Chad Billingsley had his best outing in nearly three years to lead Philadelphia past Miami.

Billingsley (2-3) gave up four hits, walked one and struck out two to help the major league-worst Phillies win their second straight game for the first time since a three-game winning streak June 21-23.

Ryan Howard and Domonic Brown lined RBI singles off Tom Koehler (7-6) in the first inning. The Phillies got just two hits the rest of the game.

Ken Giles pitched around two hits in the eighth for the Phillies, firing a 100 mph fastball past Adeiny Hechavarria to strand runners on second and third. Jonathan Papelbon finished for his 15th save in 15 tries.

        INDIANS 9, REDS 4

CINCINNATI (AP) - Michael Brantley, Brandon Moss and Yan Gomes homered - part of a rare Cleveland splurge with Corey Kluber on the mound - and the Indians ended a nine-game losing streak in Cincinnati.

The Indians' skid was their longest anywhere in the majors. Their last victory at Great American was 3-1 on July 2, 2011, when Brantley hit a three-run homer off Homer Bailey.

Brantley connected in the first inning off Anthony DeSclafani (5-7), giving Kluber (5-10) an uncharacteristic cushion. The AL's reigning Cy Young Award winner has gotten the lowest run support in the majors, with Cleveland scoring only 2.3 runs behind him.

Kluber allowed seven hits - three each by Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips - in 7 2/3 innings. Cody Allen relieved and gave up Jay Bruce's three-run homer.

        CARDINALS 12, METS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Jason Heyward matched a career best with five hits, Randal Grichuk had two homers and six RBIs, and John Lackey worked seven strong innings to lead St. Louis.

Mets starter Bartolo Colon (9-8) trailed by four runs after just one-third of an inning and surrendered seven runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Heyward was removed after singling in the eighth, perhaps because he fouled a pitch off his leg earlier in the at-bat.

Grichuk was 3 for 3 with a two-run homer off Carlos Torres that capped a four-run fifth and a three-run shot off Alex Torres in the eighth.

St. Louis improved to major league-bests of 58-33 overall and 33-11 at home.

Lackey (8-5) scattered 10 hits, one of them to .084-hitting Colon, but was hurt only by Michael Cuddyer's eighth homer leading off the sixth.

        BREWERS 8, PIRATES 5

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Jonathan Lucroy, Aramis Ramirez and Khris Davis homered as Milwaukee took full advantage of a late lineup change.

Pittsburgh left-hander Francisco Liriano was scratched minutes before the game began due to neck stiffness. Sudden starter Vance Worley (3-5) gave up five runs - all with two outs - in four innings.

Brewers starter Jimmy Nelson (7-9) fell into a 3-0 hole before recording an out, but sparked Milwaukee's rally with a two-run single in the second.

Lucroy hit a go-ahead, two-run shot in the fourth. Ramirez had three hits, including a homer in the fifth, and Davis added a pinch-hit blast in the seventh.

Francisco Rodriguez converted his 21st save.

        RANGERS 7, ASTROS 6

HOUSTON (AP) - Rougned Odor homered early, then got into a testy exchange at home plate in the ninth inning that escalated into a shouting match between the managers as Texas beat Houston.

Odor hit a two-run homer in the third and later singled. He came up in the ninth and exchanged words with Houston catcher Hank Conger.

Conger moved toward Odor and Texas slugger Prince Fielder raced from the on-deck circle to push the Astros player out of the way. Both benches and bullpens cleared as Fielder and Houston manager A.J. Hinch jawed in the middle of the scrum. There was some pushing before Rangers manager Jeff Banister stepped in front of Fielder. Hinch and Banister engaged in a brief shouting match before order was restored and the game resumed with no ejections.

Odor followed with a triple, keying a two-run burst that made it 7-4.

Colby Lewis (9-4) allowed four hits and two runs in 7 1/3 innings. Shawn tolleson gave up a two-run homer to Conger in the ninth before retiring the next three batters for his 14th save.

Houston's Scott Feldman (4-5) gave up nine hits and four runs in 5 2/3 innings.

        PADRES 5, ROCKIES 4

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Clint Barmes hit a tiebreaking, two-run homer in the seventh and rookie catcher Austin Hedges homered and threw out a runner to help San Diego to its fourth straight win.

The Padres, who have underperformed after general manager A.J. Preller revamped the roster in a series of dazzling offseason moves, matched their season-high winning streak. They also won four straight from June 2-6.

The game was tied at 3 in the seventh when pinch-hitter Melvin Upton Jr. drew a leadoff walk off Christian Friedrich (0-2). Tommy Kahnle came on and allowed Barmes' homer to deep left.

The Rockies closed to 5-4 on Troy Tulowitzki's homer to deep left off Joaquin Benoit with one out in the eighth.

Brandon Maurer (6-2) got one out for the win. Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in the ninth for his 25th save.

        ANGELS 3, RED SOX 0

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Garrett Richards pitched a two-hitter for his second career shutout, Kole Calhoun hit two homers, and Los Angeles got its 13th victory in 16 games.

Richards (10-6) allowed just three baserunners and retired Boston's final 15 hitters in order to wrap up the second straight shutout victory for the Angels, who increased their AL West lead to a season-best 1 1/2 games. Richards allowed just one Boston runner to reach third base, retiring 22 of 23 overall to end it.

Pablo Sandoval had both hits for the Red Sox, who have been shut out in consecutive games for the first time since Aug. 7-8, 2009.

Calhoun, who had three hits, led off the third and fifth innings with long homers into the elevated right-field stands off Rick Porcello (5-10).

        GIANTS 8, DIAMONDBACKS 4

PHOENIX (AP) - Jake Peavy got his first win of the season, Buster Posey drove in four runs, and San Francisco won its fifth straight.

The win gave San Francisco its 10th straight series victory in Arizona. The Giants haven't won this many series in a row on the road since they took 13 straight against the Boston Beaneaters/Doves from 1903 to 1907.

The Diamondbacks, two games into a 10-game homestand, have lost five straight since climbing to .500.

Peavy (1-4) allowed four runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings. Sergio Romo pitched the final 1 1/3 innings for his first save of the season.

The Diamondbacks' Chase Anderson (4-4) had his shortest outing of the season. In 3 2/3 innings, he allowed seven runs on 10 hits, nine of them singles.

        ATHLETICS 3, TWINS 2, 10 INNINGS

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Stephen Vogt hit a game-ending single in the 10th inning to lift Oakland past Minnesota.

After the teams were held to one total run in the first eight innings behind sharp pitching from Oakland's Scott Kazmir and Minnesota's Phil Hughes, the game opened up late.

The Twins took the lead with two runs in the top of the ninth - only to squander it when pinch-hitter Jake Smolinski tied it in the bottom half to give Glen Perkins his first blown save of the season.

The A's then won it in the 10th. Billy Burns led off with a double against Casey Fein (2-4) and stole third. Vogt followed with a clean single to left to give Oakland its second walk-off win of the season.

Drew Pomeranz (4-3) pitched the 10th for the victory.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the Day: Red Sox at Angels
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at Los Angeles Angels (-129, 7.5)

The Boston Red Sox figured out how to keep Mike Trout from dominating a game but forgot to bring their own offense. The Red Sox will try to score at least their first run of the series when they visit the Los Angeles Angels for the third contest of their four-game series on Sunday.

Trout, who hit a walk-off homer in Friday’s 1-0 series-opening win, went 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts on Saturday, but Kole Calhoun took over with a pair of solo blasts and the Angels went on to grab a 3-0 victory behind Garrett Richards’ shutout. Boston, which averaged 5.9 runs in the nine games leading up to the All-Star break, totaled seven hits in the first two games of the series. The Angels are winners of 13 of their last 16 and sit atop the American League West. The Red Sox will turn to rookie Eduardo Rodriguez to start on Sunday while the offense attempts to figure its way against All-Star Hector Santiago.

                TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE HISTORY: The Angels opened as -135 favorites and have been bet down slightly to -129.

                INJURY REPORT:

Red Sox - SP C. Buchholz (15-day DL, elbow), C B. Swihart (15-day DL, foot), RP H. Hembree (15-day DL, shoulder), RF D. Nava (15-day DL, thumb).

Angels - RP H. Street (probable Sunday, groin), SP J. Weaver (15-day DL, hip).

WEATHER REPORT: There is a chance of thunderstorms and a 51 percent chance of rain. There will also be a five mile per hour wind blowing out to right field.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH Eduardo Rodriguez (5-2, 3.59 ERA) vs. Angels LH Hector Santiago (6-4, 2.33)

Rodriguez is 2-0 over his last three starts, allowing a total of four runs over 17 1/3 innings in that span. The Venezuelan rookie surrendered two runs – a pair of solo homers – in a win over the New York Yankees last Saturday but has not completed seven frames since June 3. Rodriguez, who is making his first appearance against Los Angeles, is 3-0 with a 0.69 ERA in four career road starts.

Santiago was a late addition to the American League All-Star roster in place of Oakland’s Sonny Gray, earning the nod after surrendering a total of three runs in 27 innings over his last four starts. The 27-year-old struck out seven and scattered one runs and eight hits over seven frames to win at Seattle on July 10. Santiago lost at Boston on May 24, when he allowed three runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings, to fall to 0-3 in five career games against the Red Sox.

                TRENDS:

                * Under is 5-1 in the last six meetings in Los Angeles.
                * Under is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings.
                * Red Sox are 3-8 in their last 11 meetings in Los Angeles.
                * Red Sox are 7-19 in the last 26 meetings overall.

CONSENSUS: The public likes the Angels in this matchup with 66.33 percent of wagers backing the Halos.

                    Sunday, July 19

Greinke has been impenetrable in day games

There's no debating Zack Greinke's importance to the Los Angeles Dodgers this season, but he's been particularly exceptional during daytime games.

In three matinee starts, Greinke is 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 22.2 innings of work. The 31-year-old has allowed 13 hits while fanning 17 batters during that span.

Greinke has also won all three of his July outings without allowing an earned run. He'll get the nod Sunday in D.C. against Max Scherzer and the Washington Nationals at 1:35 p.m. ET.

As of this writing, the line and total were off the board.

Arrieta has been lights out during July for the Cubs

Jake Arrieta will be happy to get back to the mound after the All-Star break as the Chicago Cubs pitcher is 3-0 in his three starts in July.

The righty has been pitching his best ball of the season with a 1.52 ERA and a 20/2 strikeout-to-walk ratio in his past three starts.

The Cubs, currently -143 favorites, visit the Atlanta Braves to end their three-game series Sunday.

Not a pretty forecast at Great American Ball Park

There is plenty of weather on tap for today's matchup between the Cincinnati Reds and the Cleveland Indians at the Great American Ball Park.

There is a chance of thunderstorms, a 59 percent chance of rain and a six mile per hour wind blowing out to left field.

The Reds are slight -110 favorites and send ace Johnny Cueto (2.73 ERA, 6-9 O/U) to the hill to take on the Indians Carlos Carrasco( 4.07 ERA, 12-6 O/U). The total is currently 7.0 runs.

MLB betting cheat sheet: Sluggin' Tigers could easily continue Over trend

                          Jul 18, 2015

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the weekend major-league schedule:

                          Trout Flashes Power

Mike Trout tied Giancarlo Stanton for the major league lead with his 27th home run on Friday, and it was a walkoff winner in a 1-0 game versus Boston. Trout has gone deep six times in his last seven games, and he's hitting .366 so far in July. He's hitting .325 versus southpaws this season, and he'll face a young left-hander on Sunday. He'll get a look at the struggling Rick Porcello on Saturday, and he's hit .333 with a home run and 17 RBIs in 16 career at bats versus the right-hander.

                          Ferocious Tigers

The Detroit Tigers may not be getting the W's lately, but it certainly hasn't been because of a lack of production at the plate. The Tigers lead the majors in scoring with 74 runs in 13 game in July, and a team batting average of .309 during that span. Those numbers are particularly impressive when you consider that Miguel Cabrera has been on the DL since July 3. Victor Martinez has helped fill the void, he's hitting .339 with four home runs and seven RBIs so far this month.

                          PETCO Now Hitter Friendly?

Over the last few years, we've come to think of San Diego's PETCO Park as one of the most pitcher friendly in the majors. That's quickly becoming a myth here in 2015. Friday's game failed to go over the total, but we did see four home runs in that game (all solo shots). According to ESPN Park Factors, PETCO ranks 5th behind Coors Field, Great American Ballpark, Camden Yards and Yankee Stadium. You don't often see totals of 6.5 in any of those parks, but low totals are still the norm in San Diego.

                          Pitching Notes

*If you haven't heard of Taylor Jungmann, it's probably only a matter of time. The 25 year old right-hander has been raising plenty of eyebrows in his rookie season in Milwaukee. He's 4-1 with a 2.15 ERA in seven starts, and his two most recent outings have been his most impressive. He went the distance, allowing one run on three hits in a win over the Dodgers in LA, and prior to that he tossed eight strong innings, allowing one run on four hits in a win at Cincinnati. His next start will come at home on Sunday opposite Jeff Locke in Game 3 versus the Pirates.

*Bartolo Colon certainly looks out of place every time he steps on the field, at the age of 42, with a physical appearance that is far from what you would describe as athletic. He's still somehow managed to remain effective in the twilight of his career, and he's once again among the major league leaders in wins. He hasn't been a great bet on the road though, with a record of 3-5 with a 4.78 ERA. He's also 3-7 with a 4.70 ERA in 11 starts under the lights. When you consider that the Mets have one of the league's worst road records, your probably better off backing Colon at home.

                          Totals Streak

The Tigers played 19 straight overs before they landed in Minnesota for their final series before the All Star break. They saw 2-of-4 games fall short of the number in that series, but after last night's 7-3 home win over the Orioles, they've now seen the total go over in 22-of-24. They give us little reason to suspect this trend won't continue, as they have led the majors in scoring in July, and their pitching staff has struggled. We could see a few more slugfests in the Motor City over the weekend.

                          Injury Notes

*Dee Gordon has been having a breakout season in Miami, sitting near the top of the National League in batting average for most of the season. With Giancarlo Stanton already sidelined with a broken bone in his hand, the Marlins can ill afford to lose Gordon. The Marlins have placed Gordon on the 15 day DL with a dislocated thumb.

*Matt Holiday returned to action for the Cardinals in Friday's series opener versus the Mets. He was 0-for-3 in the game, and could be a little rusty after sitting out the last five weeks. He could face Bartolo Colon on Saturday, and he's 6-for-13 (.462) lifetime versus the right-hander.

                            MLB Power Rankings: Week 15

We head into the All-Star Break with very little change at the top. But, on the heels of two dramatic wins over the MLB-best Cardinals, the Pirates jump back into our No. 2 spot. Unfortunately for Pittsburgh, finishing No.2 to St. Louis will force the Buccos to win a Wild Card game just to advance to the quarterfinal round. Our biggest mover this week is the Mets, up five spots to No. 15, while the Cubbies have fallen four spots to No. 14.

It's hard to imagine this team needing much, but look for the Cards to go shopping for a 1B before the deadline. They've been using primarily Mark Reynolds since the injury to Matt Adams and the results have not been good. Adam Lind, are you ready to join the best team in MLB?

                            2 3 up 1 53-35 (38-50-0) -120 Pittsburgh

The week started out badly for the Bucs with news that versatile IF (2014 All Star) Josh Harrison would be lost for up to six weeks with a torn thumb ligament. It didn't matter that much as the Pirates ended the week taking three of four at home from the Cardinals and closing the gap to 2 1/2 games.

                            3 6 up 3 52-34 (49-37-0) -118 Kansas City

Just when the Royals were looking like they could defend their AL Title came bad news in the form of a serious groin injury to All-Star OF Alex Gordon. Gordon is as valuable for his exceptional play in the field as he is for his bat. The depth of this team will be tested now.

                            4 4 same 45-46 (45-45-0) -118 Toronto

Josh Donaldson set a new record for All-Star votes, but he'd gladly trade that for an AL East Pennant and a deep run in the playoffs. It would be almost to the point of shocking if this team didn't acquire a major arm or two - likely a starter and reliever - by the deadline.

                            5 2 down 3 51-39 (38-52-0) -117 LA Dodgers

When you look at All-Star Zack Greinke's numbers, it's not a misprint. With his eight shutout innings last week, Greinke now has an other-worldly 1.38 ERA in 18 starts. He also leads the league with a 6.1 hit rate. Bruce Bochy, I think we found your starter for Tuesday's game.

                            6 5 down 1 49-42 (51-40-0) -113 Houston

These days, the tonic for a losing skid is a series against the Rays, but Houston lost three straight in Tampa this weekend and found itself in a virtual tie with the Angels heading into the break. The Stros aren't used to being in this position so the most important thing is to stay focused and not panic.

                            7 7 same 44-44 (47-41-0) -111 Baltimore

O's pitching is really starting to falter. Bud Norris was demoted to the bullpen, giving Gausman yet another chance, but he failed miserably and was sent back to the minors while Miguel Gonzalez struggled again as well. Are the O's suddenly buyers at the deadline? Seems like they should be.

                            8 8 same 48-39 (40-47-0) -110 Washington

Early last week, Span and Escobar went down with injuries again, joining Zimmerman, Werth, and Rendon to bring the total offensive regulars on the shelf to five. You can't win games with a lineup that's 60% depleted no matter how good your pitching is. The good news is everyone could be back soon.

                            9 11 up 2 48-40 (45-43-0) -107 LA Angels

The Astros probably knew in their hearts that the Angels' slow start was too good to be true. Jerry Dipoto resigned and this team caught fire, going 8-2 in its last 10 games. Angels are second in the AL in hitting (.303 BA) and seventh in pitching (3.38) for the month of July.

                            10 12 up 2 41-50 (44-47-0) -107 Oakland

As soon as Sonny Gray made it back from his bout with food poisoning, the A's other ace, Scott Kazmir, had to leave his start with triceps tightness. Although the injury is deemed minor, Oakland will take no chances with Kazmir, who they most likely will be shopping in the coming weeks.

                            11 13 up 2 46-43 (48-41-0) -106 San Francisco

Perhaps no team needed an offensive player back from injury more than the Giants and OF Hunter Pence. Pence is one of the most consistent hitters in the league and one of the most intense as well. He returned on Tuesday and made an almost immediate impact for his team.

                            12 9 down 3 48-40 (47-41-0) -105 NY Yankees

To no one's surprise, A-Rod was snubbed for the All-Star game by the Players' vote despite posting what almost everyone would agree are All-Star numbers. Yankees were the only one of the top four AL East teams that has posted a winning record in their last 10 games (7-3).

                            13 10 down 3 47-40 (39-48-0) -104 Chi. Cubs

The heartaches at Wrigley continue. The Cubs were one out away from taking a huge series from the Redbirds, when Jhonny Peralta hit a 2-run HR to win the game and allow the Cards to leave Chicago with a split. As if that wasn't enough, Jason Hammel injured his hamstring and had to leave the game early.

                            14 15 up 1 49-40 (57-32-0) -104 Minnesota

Twins refuse to go away in the AL Central and are playing some great ball, especially at home. Their starters are posting a 3.42 ERA so far in July and LHP Tommy Milone is one of the biggest surprises since rejoining the rotation in early June. Paul Molitor looking like a Manager of the Year candidate.

                            15 20 up 5 47-42 (43-45-0) -101 NY Mets

Jacob deGrom can add an All-Star plaque to keep his Rookie Of The Year award company now. There will be no sophomore slump for the second-year ace, whose future is about as bright as any pitcher in the game. On the flip side, the Mets lost promising young LHP Steven Matz for at least one month.

                            16 14 down 2 42-45 (46-41-0) -100 Arizona

Being a .500 team with one legitimate superstar (Paul Goldschmidt) makes it hard to predict what the D-Backs will do at the trade deadline. Aaron Hill may garner some interest at a thin position (2B), but that's probably about it. The smart money says they sit tight.

                            17 19 up 2 42-46 (39-49-0) 102 Cleveland

Jason Kipnis gets a well-deserved trip to the All-Star game as he is enjoying a career year and is clearly the best hitting 2B in the AL right now. He's already matched last season's HR total, and leads the league in doubles as well. Now if only Kipnis could teach his methods to the rest of his lineup.

                            18 17 down 1 44-44 (42-46-0) 102 Detroit

Another rough week for the Tigers in a season that's been full of them. Detroit starters are sporting the second-worst ERA in the American League so far in the month of July (6.24). The bullpen suffered an epic 9th-inning meltdown on Friday vs. the Twins, so Detroit acquired Neftali Feliz from Texas.

                            19 16 down 3 46-45 (51-40-0) 102 Tampa Bay

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the week was the Rays' three-game sweep over the Astros. Don't look for this team to turn around its season however. The Rays are still almost certainly an also-ran in the AL East. Tampa has a dreadful team ERA in July of 4.98 (12th in the AL).

                            20 18 down 2 42-46 (51-37-0) 106 Texas

The break can't come soon enough for the Rangers who head into the All-Star week having won just one of their last eight games. Reliever Feliz is gone but Matt Harrison returned to pitch for the first time in more than a year. But the southpaw struggled and needs more work to shake off the rust.

                            21 21 same 42-47 (50-39-0) 108 Atlanta

Think the Braves are sending flowers to the Padres Front Office? Atlanta's salary dumps of the Upton brothers and Craig Kimbrel netted them IF Jace Peterson, OF Cameron Maybin, and SP Mat Wisler (plus others we haven't seen yet). All three look like budding stars for Atlanta. Watch out in 2016.

                            22 24 up 2 42-47 (38-51-0) 109 Boston

A rash of last-minute injuries that swept through the league like a plague didn't spare the Red Sox as their one and only ace, Clay Buchholz, is headed to the DL with a forearm muscle strain. It couldn't come at a worse time, as Buchholz had started pitching his team back into contention.

                            23 23 same 38-51 (43-46-0) 109 Miami

A little-known, second-year rookie 1B named Justin Bour is trying his hardest to fill the immense hole left by the injury to Giancarlo Stanton. Bour has emerged as the team's new main source of power, blasting 10 home runs in just 164 ABs.

                            24 22 down 2 39-47 (42-43-0) 112 Cincinnati

Add Mike Leake's name to that of Johnny Cueto as a starter who the Reds are shopping at the deadline. Leake will garner interest as a solid mid-to-back end rotation filler at a reasonable cost for the remainder of the season. Look for a lot of new faces on the mound for the Reds in the second half.

                            25 27 up 2 38-52 (42-48-0) 113 Milwaukee

Brewers got Khris Davis back after he missed more than a month with a torn meniscus. Davis should be a fixture in the Brewer outfield for some time, but this is a team which could look a lot different in the second half with everyone from Carlos Gomez to K-Rod being mentioned in trade talks.

                            26 26 same 41-48 (34-55-0) 113 Seattle

Iwakuma came back last week, but didn't pitch well at all in yet another setback for this club which had such high hopes just three months ago. But I wouldn't expect them to do much, if anything at the deadline. The person most likely to be leaving just might be manager Lloyd McLendon.

                            27 25 down 2 41-49 (46-44-0) 114 San Diego

Justin Upton's short time in San Diego may be coming to a close, as San Diego is apparently interested in moving the All-Star OF. Upton will be a free-agent next season, and there is little chance that the Pads will be able to sign him, so getting as much as they can now makes sense.

                            28 28 same 39-49 (46-42-0) 117 Colorado

Rockies keep falling in the rankings, and it could get a lot worse in the second half, especially if they can find the right deal for SS Tulowitzki who is on the trading block. Rockies pitching is also available, and these guys are known to pitch much better for contenders once they get out of Colorado.

                            29 29 same 41-45 (37-48-0) 126 Chi. White Sox

Sox pitching is coming alive. Chicago's team ERA of 2.24 in the month of July is the best in the A.L. Perhaps the most important result of that is the fact that pitchers like John Danks all of a sudden have some value on the trade market.

                            30 30 same 29-62 (41-50-0) 167 Philadelphia

The worst run differential in all of the Majors last season was the Texas Rangers at -136. We're a little more than halfway through the 2015 campaign, and the Phillies are sporting a -160 number. They could challenge the modern day record of -337 (2003 Tigers).

Preview: Lynx (11-3) at Shock (10-6)

                              Date: July 19, 2015 4:30 PM EDT

The Minnesota Lynx certainly will miss Seimone Augustus and Monica Wright, but the emergence of Anna Cruz has complemented the steady play of Maya Moore to soften the blow.

Losing star players is something the Tulsa Shock have had to overcome all season.

Visiting Minnesota seeks a fourth consecutive win while the Shock look to avoid a third straight defeat Sunday.

The Lynx (11-3) announced prior to Friday's game against Chicago that Augustus underwent arthroscopic surgery on her right knee and will be out indefinitely.

This is the first known problem in the veteran's right knee after she tore her left ACL in 2009 and missed 10 games last season with left knee soreness. Augustus was named an All-Star after averaging 15.4 points, second on the team to Moore's 19.6.

Just one day earlier, the Lynx announced Wright underwent the same procedure and also will be out an undetermined amount of time. Minnesota didn't have much trouble without them against the Sky behind Moore's season-high 29 points in an 84-66 win.

Moore has scored at least 20 in six straight, one shy of her own franchise record, but she was more pleased with the play of Cruz, who finished with 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

It marked the first start of the season for Cruz, who started all 34 games as a rookie for New York last season before the Lynx acquired her on draft night for the Nos. 11, 23 and 28 picks. She was playing in her fifth game since joining Minnesota earlier this month after being with the Spanish national team.

"She's a pro," Moore said. "This isn't new for her, but I'm just so impressed how she can come in mentally and get everything we're trying to do. It's taken us all of training camp and building up to this point of the season, and she's only been here a little while, but she can just hop in and get it and go."

Both teams will look much different from their previous two meetings. Minnesota won the season opener 83-75 behind 26 points from Lindsay Whalen and 23 from Moore on June 5 before Skylar Diggins had a season-high 26 in the Shock's 86-78 victory June 21.

Diggins, though, tore her right ACL exactly one week later and will miss the remainder of the season. Tulsa (10-6) also has played each game without All-Star Glory Johnson, who is sitting out due to her pregnancy.

Odyssey Sims missed over a month with a knee issue, but she's averaged 16.4 points while the Shock try to remain among the contenders in the Western Conference. She's shot just 8 for 29 over the last two, though, with Tulsa dropping both.

Sims had a season-low eight points in Wednesday's 83-80 loss to Indiana and finished with 14 in Friday's 65-58 defeat at San Antonio.

Riquna Williams has averaged 17.6 points in the last seven while starting in place of Diggins, but she scored just 10 and shot 3 of 13 from the field Friday after scoring a season-high 31 against the Fever.

The Shock, who shot a season-worst 30.9 percent against the Stars, have lost 20 of the last 22 meetings with Minnesota.

Preview: Sun (7-6) at Mystics (7-6)

                                Date: July 19, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

The Washington Mystics can build off their first victory in July by keeping the Connecticut Sun winless for the month Sunday night in the nation's capital.

Connecticut was supposed to be playing for a second straight night, but its home game Saturday against Indiana was postponed due to the Fever's airport delays. The Sun were to fly to this game Sunday morning but instead took a train to Washington on Saturday.

Maybe the earlier arrival and extra day off can help the Sun (7-6) halt a five-game losing streak which includes an 0-4 record in July.

Washington (7-6) was 0-3 this month before routing Indiana 68-50 on Friday. It was the fewest points allowed this season by the Mystics, who hadn't held the opposition below 70 in nine straight games.

A lineup change may have played a role, with 6-foot rookie guard Natasha Cloud starting in place of 5-6 veteran Ivory Latta. Cloud had two of Washington's 11 steals as the team forced 17 turnovers.

"Part of it was getting a bigger defender on the court to start the game. 'Tash has length a lot of teams don't have, can bother their guards," coach Mike Thibault told the Mystics' official website. "We just thought getting a bigger defender on the court at the start of the game would cause them some problems and it did."

Latta had another rough game with three points on 1-of-11 shooting. After a four-game stretch in which she averaged 17.8 points, she's scored 5.5 per contest in her past four.

Emma Messeman and LaToya Sanders both posted double-doubles, each scoring a team-high 14 points while combining for 23 rebounds. Sanders had five of the 21 assists recorded by the Mystics, who lead the WNBA with 18.2 per game.

"We're leading the league in assists because we are unselfish," Thibault said. "That's a great trait in a team that has good feelings about each other."

While Washington has had an up-and-down season, Connecticut (7-6) has taken a different route to the same record. The Sun opened with a 73-68 home loss to the Mystics in the teams' only meeting, then won seven straight before the current five-game skid.

Poor defense had been the problem with an average of 87.5 points allowed in the first four games before Connecticut shot 30.0 percent and was held to its lowest point total in a 64-57 loss at New York on Thursday.

The struggles of starters Alyssa Thomas and Jasmine Thomas have seemingly hurt the Sun. Alyssa is averaging 9.0 points, her total over the past three games, while Jasmine has averaged 3.3 on 6-of-28 shooting in the last four after going scoreless Thursday.

Alex Bentley tops the club with 17.1 points per game and scored a team-high 17 against the Mystics last month. Stefanie Dolson led Washington with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

The Mystics are 4-3 at home, but each loss was by four points or fewer. The Sun have lost their last four visits to Washington.
