Game of the day: CFL Doubleheader
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edmonton Eskimos at Ottawa Redblacks (+3.5, 48.5)

After notching their first victory of the season at the expense of the Ottawa Redblacks, the Edmonton Eskimos look to complete a home-and-home sweep when the clubs reconvene in the nation's capital on Friday. Matt Nichols made the most of his debut with Mike Reilly sidelined 10-12 weeks with a knee injury, going 12-of-21 for 212 yards and three touchdowns in a convincing 46-17 victory on July 10.

Adarius Bowman stepped up in lieu of injuries to both Reilly and running back John White (season-ending ruptured Achilles tendon), reeling in five catches for 120 yards and a touchdown as Edmonton emerged victorious following its early bye week. The Eskimos reverted to the form that made them the league's top defence in 2014 by limiting Ottawa to just 25 yards rushing while also taking advantage of 13 penalties for 139 yards in the win. "You don't win the Grey Cup in July, you don't lose the Grey Cup in July," Redblacks wide receiver Maurice Price told the Ottawa Citizen after the team surrendered its highest point total in its 21 regular-season games to date. "There's no sense in dwelling on it and letting it hang around. Just put it behind you and move on."

      TV: 7 p.m. ET, TSN, RDS, ESPN3

LINE HISTORY: There has been no movement on either the spread or total since open.

INJURY REPORT: Eskimos - DT Gregory Alexandre (Ques), WR Wallace Miles (Ques), DE Elie Ngoyi (Ques) Redblacks - QB Brock Jensen (Ques), WR Khalil Paden (Ques), DB Forrest Hightower (Ques), RB Jeremiah Johnson (Ques), Justin Capicciotti (Ques)

ABOUT THE ESKIMOS (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS, 1-1 O/U): Coach Chris Jones admittedly was impressed after watching rookie cornerback John Ojo's momentum-turning interception for a touchdown in the first meeting. "What I liked most about it was when the opportunity presented itself, John had the wherewithal and the ability to finish," Jones told the Edmonton Journal on Monday. "Instinctually, he's playing corner. He was a natural safety in college (at Florida A&M), so he's still learning the position, but certainly he still brings everything we look for as far as physical attributes."

ABOUT THE REDBLACKS (2-1 SU, 2-1 ATS, 1-2 O/U): After throwing for 559 yards and four touchdowns in wins over Montreal and B.C., Henry Burris stumbled out of the blocks in the first meeting with the Eskimos. Burris tossed the interception by Ojo and completed just 20-of-36 passes for 162 yards before being pulled in the third quarter. "That pick-six was uncontested," coach Rick Campbell said. "Then, we took so many penalties in the first half ... it's hard to play winning football that way."

      TRENDS:

*Eskimos are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games following a ATS win.
*Under is 10-4-1 in RedBlacks last 15 games overall.
*Under is 12-2 in Eskimos last 14 games following a ATS win.

CONSENSUS: 57 percent of the public is backing the Eskimos with 50.5 percent on the over.

BC Lions at Saskatchewan Roughriders (-3.5, 51.5)

The Saskatchewan Roughriders seek their first victory of the season when they host the BC Lions on Friday. The only remaining winless team in the league, Saskatchewan has been close in each of its first three contests, losing by a total of nine points.

After opening the campaign with a four-point defeat to Winnipeg, the Roughriders dropped a two-point decision to Toronto and suffered a 35-32 setback at BC last Friday - both in overtime. The Lions rallied from a 29-18 deficit late in the fourth quarter, with rookie Richie Leone kicking his fifth field goal of the game - a club-record 56-yarder - with 15 seconds remaining before Travis Lulay hit Manny Arceneaux with a 4-yard pass in overtime for the winning score. "To be able to come back like that says a lot about our team," said BC first-year coach Jeff Tedford, who notched his initial CFL win. "I was so proud of the guys."

      TV: 10 p.m. ET, TSN, RDS, ESPN3

LINE HISTORY: Initially the Roughriders were favored by three points, but have shifted to -3.5. The total has jumped a full point since opening at 50.5 and is now 51.5.

INJURY REPORT: Lions - SB Courtney Taylor (Prob), G Cody Husband (Ques), DB Ryan Phillips (Ques), LB Jason Arakgi (Doub) Roughriders - LB Shea Emry (Ques)

ABOUT THE LIONS (1-1 SU, 1-1 ATS, 1-1 O/U): Safety Eric Fraser has returned home, as the native of Burnaby was signed by BC on Tuesday. A product of Central Michigan, Fraser spent four seasons with Calgary after being selected in the first round of the 2010 draft. The 28-year-old was taken by Ottawa in the expansion draft following the 2013 season but was cut by the Redblacks during this year's training camp.

ABOUT THE ROUGHRIDERS (0-3 SU, 0-3 ATS, 3-0 O/U): With Weldon Brown nursing a shoulder injury, Saskatchewan also added to its defensive backfield Tuesday by signing cornerback Geoff Tisdale. A former All-Star, Tisdale has collected 29 interceptions - four for touchdowns - in 114 career games with Hamilton, Calgary and Montreal. The Roughriders also signed cornerback Paul Woldu, who was released after the preseason, to the practice squad.

      TRENDS:

*Lions are 0-4-2 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
*Roughriders are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 home games.
*Under is 36-15 in the last 51 meetings.

CONSENSUS: 57.3 percent of the users are backing the 'Riders with 61 percent on the over.

Roughriders have been an abysmal bet at home

The Saskatchewan Roughriders head into their Week 4 matchup with the B.C. Lions with a 1-7 record against the spread in their last eight home games at Mosaic Stadium.

The Roughriders have played two games at home so far this season and have lost both ATS and straight up. They were beaten 30-26 (-6) by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Week 1, followed by a 42-40 loss (-3) to the Toronto Argonauts.

The Green and White dropped five straight home games ATS before finally covering as 1.5-point home faves against the Edmonton Eskimos in the final week of the 2014 regular season.

Oddsmakers sent out a line of Riders -3 with the Lions in town. That has since moved up to -3.5 as of Thursday afternoon.

          Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

How Phil Steele's football magazine sees the Big 14 West Division this year......

          7) Purdue - 1-15 in league last two years; supposed to be improved this year.

          6) Illinois-- Curious to see if tumultuous offseason effects experienced team.

          5) Northwestern-- Won 2nd bowl (2-9) ever in 2012, went 5-7 last two years.

          4) Iowa-- 19-19 last three years; last bowl win was in '10. Disappointing.

          3) Minnesota-- Program on rise is 16-10 last two years but lost last five bowls.

          2) Nebraska-- Culture shock with pass-oriented Riley replacing Pelini as coach.

          1) Wisconsin-- Former OC Chryst is Badgers' third HC in last four years.

          **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Random stuff on a summer day........

          13) I never watch the ESPYs, seriously. waste of time. Much rather watch the NBA Summer League or the AAA All-Star Game. But I will say this about Bruce Jenner

This is a free country, that is very important to remember. If a person wants to have a sex-change operation, knock yourself out, you're free to do that.

What baffles me is why anyone would give this person an award. If you're that starved for ratings that you exploit stuff like this for attention, well thats just sad.

          12) MLB has onions banning Pete Rose when they're in bed with Draft Kings, a fantasy sports company. Watch the Draft Kings commercials with the guy in the Tom Brady jersey; thats the face of any gambler whose wager lies in the balance at the end.

Nothing wrong with it, but fantasy sports is a form of gambling, simple as that.

          11) As for Rose, he is not getting in the Hall of Fame, not in his lifetime. I'd vote for him getting in, but too many prominent baseball people want him kept out.

          10) Coastal Carolina's basketball team is making a historic trip to Cuba to play some exhibition games. Pretty sure it is the first visit this century by an American team.

          9) White Sox skipper Robin Ventura went public with his wish that ace Chris Sale not pitch in All-Star Game and Ned Yost granted his wish, which hurts Yost's team, since now Sale will pitch against the Royals Sunday, when he wouldn't have otherwise.

          8) Cubs scored 12 runs in Jon Lester's last nine starts. No bueno.

          7) Andy Dalton got booed at the celebrity softball game in Cincinnati this week; I know he has an 0-4 record in playoff games, but his regular season record is 40-23-1 and that is not boo-able. People are jerks sometimes.

          6) You could actually wager on whether the first pitch of the All-Star Game would be a ball or a strike. Seriously, you could.

          5) I'm wondering if Buster Posey catching guys in All-Star Game helps him at all next time he faces those pitchers in a real game?

          4) FAO Schwarz toy store in Manhattan closed this week, a NYC institution that was owned by Toys 'r Us. I was in there once; it was a bigtime tourist attraction, but it became too expensive to rent the space and so it is gone now.

          3) Why hasn't Marcus Mariota signed with the Titans yet? What is he thinking?

          2) How many major league pitchers do you think were the center of their high school football team? Clayton Kershaw was; the QB was Lions' QB Matthew Stafford.

          1) My five all-time favorite basketball players to watch; not necessarily the best guys, just the most fun for me to watch:

          Vlade Divac-George Gervin-Pete Maravich-Steve Nash-David Thompson.

Preview: Giants (46-43) at Diamondbacks (42-45)
            Game: 1
            Venue: Chase Field
            Date: July 17, 2015 9:40 PM EDT

If the San Francisco Giants are to maintain their momentum from before the All-Star break, they'll need to avoid their longest road losing streak in over 15 years.

The Giants try to record their first win away from home in nearly a month Friday night when they open this three-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

San Francisco (46-43) followed a seven-game slide by winning four of five before the break. The Giants had no trouble sweeping three straight from lowly Philadelphia, batting .426 and outscoring the Phillies 27-9, including Sunday's 4-2 victory.

"I thought it was important for us to build some momentum," manager Bruce Bochy told the team's official website. "I thought it was critical to get back on track, play some good ball and stay in the hunt. ... We're not where we want to be, obviously, but you want to hang in there."

Bochy's team is second in the NL West, 4 1/2 games back of Los Angeles. That deficit would be smaller if San Francisco hadn't dropped seven straight road games after winning 21 of its first 35. A 6.43 ERA during that skid has been the biggest issue, though the offense hasn't helped much either, averaging 2.7 runs per game.

The Giants haven't lost eight straight away from home since May 12-20, 2000.

While San Francisco hasn't officially named a starter for Friday, Matt Cain (1-1, 4.09 ERA) is likely to get his third start after sitting out a year because of elbow surgery.

The right-hander struggled in his season debut at Miami on July 2, giving up five runs and two homers with four walks in five innings of a 5-4 loss. He bounced back five days later by yielding two hits with seven strikeouts in six innings of a 3-0 win over the New York Mets.

Cain is 2-0 with a 2.79 ERA over his last five starts at Arizona.

He should have a red-hot Buster Posey behind the plate. Posey is hitting .442 with 13 RBIs in his last 14 games after going 8 for 13 in the past three, and is a lifetime .336 hitter at Chase Field.

The Giants took two of three at Arizona to start the season from April 6-8 but they've lost six of the next seven at home.

The Diamondbacks (42-45) entered the break with three straight losses to the Mets after finally getting back to .500 with a win over Texas on July 8.

They hit .174 and scored seven runs against the Mets but manager Chip Hale feels his team can bounce back.

"It's so easy to fall into that trap of feeling sorry for yourself, and they haven't done that at all," he said. "That's one thing about this club that we're hoping is going to be the rest of the way. We've been able to sort of separate good series from bad series. We've already proven that."

Robbie Ray (3-4, 2.16) make his first appearance against the Giants, looking to win back-to-back starts for the first time.

The left-hander ended his three-game slide by allowing two unearned runs in 7 2-3 innings of a 4-2 win at Texas on July 7.

He's lost his last two home starts with a 5.40 ERA.

Arizona is expected to have outfielder Ender Inciarte back from a strained right hamstring.

Inciarte, who hasn't played since June 15, went 8 for 25 with a homer in seven games during a rehab stint in the minors.

All-Star Paul Goldschmidt is batting .406 (13 for 32) during a nine-game hitting streak against the Giants.

The Los Angeles Angels will not see Jered Weaver in their rotation for at least another week. Weaver, who has been out for nearly a month with left hip inflammation, has not seen game time since June 20.

It has not been a banner year for Weaver who has posted a 4-8 record with a 4.75 ERA and an OBP of .303.

According to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register, that means the earliest we will see Weaver is next weekend.

Smoltz says Mets' rotation 'way better' than 90's Braves

The Atlanta Braves rotation in the 90's is considered one of the best to ever take to the diamond. Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and now John Smoltz are all in Coopersown; but one of those legendary pitchers says the current Mets rotation is better.

“They’re way better,” Smoltz told New York Daily News. "They've got more talent than we could ever have."

The Mets rotation, which contains youngsters Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndeergard, start their second half of the season in St. Louis Friday.

                      Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

How Phil Steele's football magazine sees the Big 14 East Division this year......

                      7) Maryland-- Went 4-4 in Big 14 LY, despite being outscored by 61 points.

                      6) Rutgers-- Knights are 11-5 as road underdogs last four year; split last four bowls. despite being underdog in all four games.

                      5) Indiana-- UAB transfer Howard (1,587 LY) is an excellent addition.

                      4) Michigan-- Harbaugh is 4th HC in last nine years; 7-14 as road dogs since '08.

                      3) Penn State-- Covered ten of their last thirteen non-conference games.

                      2) Michigan State-- 53-14 last five years, won last four bowls, all by 4 or less points.

                      1) Ohio State-- QB depth is envy of everyone, but two of three will be unhappy.

                      **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: 13 of my favorite sports movies.........

-- Any Given Sunday-- Al Pacino's "Game of Inches" speech is tremendous; who knew Lawrence Taylor could act? Johnny Unitas as an opposing coach: good touch.

-- Major League-- Bob Uecker was awesome as the Indians' radio announcer, as Tribe made an unlikely run to the playoffs, with Charlie Sheen as one of their pitchers.

-- Let It Ride-- Richard Dreyfuss is a degenerate gambler having a very good day at the racetrack. If only KL Wheat or DD Lohaus could have a day like that at Saratoga this year!!!!

-- Fast Break-- Gabe Kaplan is a NYC deli manager who quits his job to become a college basketball coach in the West. Bernard King is one of his players.

-- Youngblood-- Hockey movie with Rob Lowe, but character actor Ed Lauter steals the movie as the team's coach with quotes like: "....I didn't come halfway to the bleeping Arctic Circle to lose to these goons!!!" Patrick Swayze has supporting role, before he became a big star.

-- Bad News Bears (original)-- Walter Matthau is classic as a Little League coach with a drinking problem and Tatum O'Neal as his star pitcher. Best quote: "You didn't come into this world to sit on the bench. Now get your ass out there and play."

-- Brian's Song (original)-- True story of friendship that developed between couple of Bears' running backs in the late 60's. Gale Sayers was the star player, Brian Piccolo his wise cracking backup who eventually dies of cancer. I haven't seen the remake yet.

-- Hoop Dreams-- Documentary about couple of Chicago-area high school basketball players. Real life is more harsh than fiction; neither kid became a star in college.

-- Invinceable-- True story of 30-year old bartender Vince Papale, who was a special teams ace for three years in the late 70's for Dick Vermeil's Eagle teams. Soundtrack for this movie is excellent, lot of good music from that era.

-- For the Love of the Game-- Kevin Costner is a Tigers' pitcher who pitches a no-hitter in the last game of his career. JK Simmons, who won an Oscar this year as a maniacal music teacher in Whiplash, is more restrained here as the Detroit manager.

-- Caddyshack-- Madcap golf comedy of early 80's: Rodney Dangerfield, Chevy Chase, Ted Knight and Bill Murray. Some of my friends in college knew the movie word-for-word and played drinking games when re-runs aired.

-- Blue Chips-- Nick Nolte is a college basketball coach; Shaquille O'Neal is one of his prize recruits as Nolte hedges on whether or not to break NCAA rules. Bob Cousy is the athletic director who steals the show in this scene.

-- Moneyball-- Adaptation of Michael Lewis' book about Billy Beane and the A's, who won 20 games in a row despite a small payroll, setting an AL record, but losing in the playoffs. As an A's fan, wish they would've given Art Howe, Miguel Tejada more credit for that great run, as well as the starting pitcher trifecta of Hudson-Mulder-Zito.

Teheran playing much better at Turner Field

The Atlanta Braves are happy to see Julio Teheran on the mound when he sleeps in his own bed, as the team is 6-2 in his starts at Turner Field this year.

The Colombian product has a 5-0 record at home this season while posting a 2.04 ERA and only allowing opposing hitters to bat .187. Comparably, Teheran has a 6.95 ERA while giving up a .333 batting average on the road.

The Braves are currently +116 when they host the Chicago Cubs Friday.

                              Dodgers, Nats clash in D.C.

                              July 17, 2015

LOS ANGELES DODGERS (51-39) at WASHINGTON NATIONALS (48-39)

                              Sportsbook.ag Line: Los Angeles +102, Washington -112, Total: 7.5

In a marquee National League matchup, the Los Angeles Dodgers head to the Nation’s capitol to take on the Washington Nationals on Friday night.

The Dodgers had a solid first half of the year and have a hold on first place in the NL West by 4.5 games after rattling off eight wins in their last 12 games before the break. They were able to get series wins against some of the bottom-feeders in the league with defeats over both Philadelphia and Milwaukee, winning five of the last seven games against them while scoring 4.4 runs per game. They had just finished off the Brewers in a rubber-match in their final game, winning 4-3 in a come-from-behind victory. With a ball leaving the park in the matchup, 1B Adrian Gonzalez (.283) continued to prove his worth and ranks in the top-10 in homers (18), RBI (55) and runs (50) in the NL.

The Nationals also hold onto first place in their respective division and entered the break going 5-3 over their last three series’. In that stretch they were able to sweep the Giants at home and also go on the road against the Orioles and take 2-of-3 contests. The final defeat of the first half was a close 3-2 game in the rubber-match against Baltimore as they had another solid effort (8.2 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 7 K) from All-Star Max Scherzer to thank. OF Bryce Harper (.339) finished off the first half with some gaudy numbers, leading the NL with a 5.7 WAR behind 26 homers (2nd in NL), 61 RBI (4th in NL), 59 runs (2nd in NL), .704 SLG (1st in NL) and a 1.168 OPS (1st in NL).

Getting the call to start for Los Angeles will be RHP Mike Bolsinger vs. RHP Jordan Zimmerman (8-5, 3.22 ERA) of the host club. The Dodgers have not looked too great when playing on the road as evidenced by their 18-22 record away from home as the Nationals have put up a mark of 25-16 when in front of their hometown faithful.

This will be the 13th time that these two are meeting since the start of the 2013 campaign and it is Los Angeles that holds a slight 7-5 overall edge while winning 4-of-6 contests on the road during that time. Trends show that the Dodgers are an efficient 10-1 (91%) with a struggling bullpen whose ERA is over 6.00 in the last 10 games this year while Washington is 42-16 (.724) in night games when Zimmerman takes the mound in the last three seasons.

Los Angeles remains fairly healthy to this point, missing just OF Carl Crawford (Oblique) from the offense as the Nationals are without 3B Anthony Rendon (Quad), 1B Ryan Zimmerman (Foot) and OF Jayson Werth (Wrist).

Zimmerman is one of the most overlooked pitchers in the National League and despite sitting in the third spot in his rotation when a healthy Strasburg is around; he is one of the better pitchers in the game. He is on pace to post his fifth consecutive season with a 3.25 or better ERA despite mowing down just 6.5 batters per nine innings. He continues to be successful due to his immense control (1.6 BB/9) and ability to keep batters from leaving the yard (0.64 HR/9). Zimmerman had pitched at least seven innings in four of the last five starts before the break with four quality starts and a 29:2 K/BB ratio in that time.

He hasn’t been all too successful against Los Angeles, though, going 2-1 (5-1 team record) with a 5.06 ERA (1.47 WHIP), but has done well in his last two meetings totaling 6.1 innings and allowing two runs on nine hits with 11 strikeouts (2 walks). SS Jimmy Rollins (8-for-33, 2 HR, 5 RBI) and 3B Justin Turner (4-for-6, 1 double, 1 HR, 3 RBI) have had some nice at-bats against the righty while 1B Adrian Gonzalez (4-for-17) and C Yasmani Grandal (1-for-7, 4 K) have struggled in the matchup.

The bullpen for the Nationals has gone 11-11 with a 3.31 ERA (1.24 WHIP) and has been able to successfully save 29-of-40 (73%) games. Drew Storen (1.89 ERA, 27 saves) has the second-most saves in the NL and allowed just one hit in his last 4.1 scoreless innings before the break.
