    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

What college football expert Phil Steele thinks about the Pac-12 North Division

    6) Oregon State-- New coach, three freshman QBs; that spells rebuilding.

    5) Washington State-- Outgained Pac-12 foes by 46 ypg; turnovers killed them.

    4) Washington-- Only nine starters back; opener in Boise could be dicey.

    3) California-- Golden Bears are 3rd-most experienced team in the country.

    2) Oregon-- Vernon Adams transfers from I-AA Eastern Washington to play QB; his first game is against..........Eastern Washington.

    1) Stanford-- Experienced offense; only four starters back on defense.

    **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday......

    13) Pirates 6, Cardinals 5 (14)-- Epic regular season game; Mark Reynolds hit two HRs, narrowly missed a third in extra innings. McCutchen hit a walk-off two-run shot when Bucs trailed in 14th, after Hurdle/Cervelli were tossed in second inning.

    12) AJ Burnett homered in this game for the first time in ten years; next week, he is going to the All-Star Game for the first time. Good month for him.

    11) Friday at Wrigley, Carlos Rodon walked six batters in six IP but didn't allow a run. How many times does a pitcher walk six guys in six IP and not allow a run?

    10) Mets 4, Arizona 2-- Matt Harvey got 31 called strikes from pitcher-friendly ump John Hirschbeck; D'backs swung at 40 pitches, got only five hits.

    9) Casey McGehee is the 8th Miami Marlin to play third base this season. Miami lost 2B Gordon to a dislocated thumb yesterday.

    8) With Gordon hurt, DJ LeMahieu gets the start at 2B for the NL Tuesday night.

    7) Angels lost in Seattle, keeping Houston atop AL West for 84th consecutive day. Astros are 9-22 in last 31 road games and sliding quickly.

    6) Cubs' P Kyle Hendricks' last three starts: 1-0, 2-0, 0-1. Not much support there.

    5) White Sox have been outscored 65-27 in first inning this season, but they're playing better right now, winning nine of last eleven games.

    4) 94-year old William Wachter is the oldest person ever to cash at the World Series of Poker Main Event. Good for him just for sitting there that long.

    3) Sacramento Kings' coach George Karl still has a Subaru commercial running on Denver TV stations, during Rockies games.

    2) NBC is broadcasting the last round of the Scottish Open today; it is a precursor to the British Open next week and a bigger event than the Quad Cities tournament in this country, but with Spieth/Zach Johnson playing, Quad Cities is still a good event.

    1) Looks like 76ers totally whiffed on last year's first round pick; Joel Embiid needs another foot operation and will miss next season. Kid seems like the next version of Greg Oden, someone who hardly played in college and never playing in NBA. Too bad.

Gray cruising on the road for the Athletics

The Oakland A's have won their past five road games when Sonny Gray takes to the mound.

Gray has been showing up in a big way in those starts, only allowing 26 hits and seven runs through 33.2 innings pitched. During that span, Gray has also held two teams scoreless.

The A's will be in Progressive Field Sunday.

Red Sox put Buchholz (forearm) on DL

Right-handed pitcher Clay Buchholz of the Boston Red Sox was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday because of a strained flexor muscle in his right forearm.

Rookie left-hander Brian Johnson was promoted from Triple-A Pawtucket to take Buchholz's place on the roster.

Reds RHP Iglesias comes off DL

The Cincinnati Reds reinstated right-hander Raisel Iglesias from the 15-day disabled list Saturday.

Iglesias has been on the disabled list since June 5 with a strained left oblique. He is 1-1 with a 5.11 ERA in six games, including four starts.

Iglesias was expected to make a spot start Saturday against the Miami Marlins in place of right-hander Anthony DeSclafani, who is bothered by lingering tightness in his gluteus. DeSclafani is expected to miss only one turn and rejoin the rotation right after the All-Star break.

The Reds also optioned center fielder Yorman Rodriguez to Triple-A Louisville.

Nationals' Span gets good news on his back

BALTIMORE -- The Washington Nationals, riddled with injuries for much of this season, finally got some good news in that area on Friday.

Center fielder Denard Span (back tightness) has been battling back spasms recently. He went to a specialist and had an MRI, and the team got positive results from everything. Manager Matt Williams said the team is putting him on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 7, but there are no structural issues.

MLB roundup: McCutchen's 14th-inning HR lifts Pirates

PITTSBURGH -- Andrew McCutchen's two-run homer in the bottom of the 14th inning gave the Pittsburgh Pirates a thrilling 6-5 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night in a matchup between the teams with the two best records in the National League.

It was McCutchen's 12th home run of the season and fifth career walk-off shot. He also extended his career-best hitting streak to 18 games in a game that last five hours and three minutes.

The Cardinals went ahead 4-3 in the top of the 14th on Jhonny Peralta's one-out RBI single off Vance Worley (3-4).

Mark Reynolds' solo home run in the top of the inning, his second of the game and seventh of the season, against rookie reliever Deolis Guerra put the Cardinals ahead 4-3. In the bottom half, rookie third baseman Jung Ho Kang hit a leadoff triple and scored the tying run on catcher Chris Stewart's one-out single off closer Trevor Rosenthal.

                Marlins 14, Reds 3

MIAMI -- Miami, which ended a long scoreless drought by rallying for six hits and five runs in the fifth inning, went on to rout Cincinnati.

The win came at a steep price for the Marlins because All-Star Dee Gordon left the game in the seventh inning with a dislocated left thumb. Gordon, who went 3-for-4 and is hitting .338 this season, was hurt while diving headfirst on his infield single.

Miami had gone 16 innings without a run but scored just in time to make a winner of rookie left-hander Adam Conley (1-0), who made his second major league appearance and his first start. Conley was hit hard at times but managed to hold the Reds to two runs in five innings.

The Marlins, who totaled 21 hits, also had a franchise-record nine consecutive hits during an eight-run seventh inning that included a three-run homer by catcher J.T. Realmuto.

                Mets 4, Diamondbacks 2

NEW YORK -- Matt Harvey threw seven strong innings and gave New York the lead for good with a two-run homer in the fifth inning at Citi Field.

Harvey grinded through the first five innings before finding a groove after his first big-league homer. He allowed two runs, five hits and four walks while striking out nine.

Lucas Duda hit a leadoff homer in the fifth. Two outs later, Eric Campbell coaxed a walk. Harvey hit the next pitch just beyond the orange line above the left-field fence for his first homer since he was with Triple-A Buffalo on April 25, 2012.

                Blue Jays 6, Royals 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Edwin Encarnacion and Danny Valencia hit home runs as Toronto clubbed Kansas City, allowing Mark Buehrle to beat Kansas City for the 26th time in his career.

Encarnacion hit a home run in the fourth inning off Chris Young after a single by Jose Bautista. That snapped a 27-inning scoreless skid for the Blue Jays.

Valencia hit a three-run blast to straightaway center field in the ninth off Brandon Finnegan.

                White Sox 5, Cubs 1

CHICAGO -- Chris Sale threw a shutout through six innings and Tyler Saladino had an RBI triple in the first inning as the White Sox handed the crosstown rival Cubs a second loss in the interleague series.

While the Sox failed in their bid for three consecutive shutouts for the first time since 1973, Sale stretched the team's scoreless run to 33 innings. Sale was hardly challenged during his seven-plus innings, allowing six hits and a walk while striking out 10. The Cubs' run came in the seventh on a pinch-RBI double from Jonathan Herrera.

The first three White Sox batters reached base, with Saladino's triple putting the Sox on the board. He scored on a single by Jose Abreu to make it 2-0.

                Rays 3, Astros 0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Pitching in the majors for the first time in five weeks, Jake Odorizzi outdueled Houston ace Dallas Keuchel.

Odorizzi, out since June 5 with an oblique injury, held the Astros to two hits in 5 2/3 scoreless innings and the Rays' bullpen stepped up for the second day in a row, throwing 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Tampa Bay won with dominating pitching and just enough offense for the second day in a row, getting a clutch two-out single from Rene Rivera with the bases loaded in the second and an RBI single from Brandon Guyer.

                Twins 9, Tigers 5

MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota pounded out 16 hits and overcame a shaky outing from right-hander Phil Hughes.

Hughes lasted just five innings, allowing four runs and eight hits but got the win anyway thanks to two big offensive innings early in the game.

Every player in the Twins' lineup had at least one hit as Minnesota overwhelmed Tigers right-hander Alfredo Simon, knocking him around for seven runs (five earned) and 10 hits in 2 1/3 innings.

                Rockies 3, Braves 2

DENVER -- Carlos Gonzalez blooped a single with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth inning to lift Colorado over Atlanta.

Drew Stubbs led off the ninth with a bouncer to first that became an infield single. Closer Jason Grilli ran to cover first but went down suddenly in severe pain and had to be taken off on a cart. David Aardsma relieved Grilli and hit Charlie Blackmon with an 0-2 pitch. Aardsma struck out Nolan Arenado but walked Troy Tulowitzki to load the bases for Gonzalez.

The winning pitcher was LaTroy Hawkins, who retired the side in order in the ninth.

                A's 5, Indians 4

CLEVELAND -- Oakland scored three runs in the eighth inning and snapped its three-game losing streak while ending Cleveland's four-game winning streak.

With the score tied at 2-2 in the eighth inning, the A's scored three runs in a rally that began with two outs and nobody on base. Catcher Stephen Vogt and Ben Zobrist singled, Josh Reddick drew a walk and Billy Butler sliced a double down the right-field line, scoring Vogt and Zobrist.

Vogt and Reddick each had two hits and scored twice for Oakland. Carlos Santana hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth for Cleveland.

                Nationals 7, Orioles 4

BALTIMORE -- Danny Espinosa hit a three-run homer as a part of a four-run sixth inning that helped Washington beat Baltimore.

Right-hander Jordan Zimmermann (8-5) got his third straight victory despite struggling through five innings. Zimmermann, whose wife gave birth to a baby girl Friday morning, allowed two homers and four runs and nine hits.

The Orioles took the lead on homers by Caleb Joseph and Steve Pearce. Bryce Harper led off the sixth with a homer that cut the deficit to one.

                Red Sox 5, Yankees 3

BOSTON -- Hanley Ramirez hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning as Boston ended the Yankees' five-game winning streak at Fenway Park.

Ramirez and Mookie Betts each had two hits. Betts tripled home Boston's fourth run with two outs in the seventh, and Xander Bogaerts reached on an infield single to plate Betts later in the frame.

Former Boston star Jacoby Ellsbury and Alex Rodriguez each homered for the Yankees.

                Padres 6, Rangers 5

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Yangervis Solarte's two-run homer capped a three-run ninth inning as San Diego rallied past Texas.

The win snapped a season-high, six-game losing streak for the Padres, who trailed 5-3 entering the ninth. Melvin Upton Jr.'s RBI single to left against closer Shawn Tolleson made it a one-run game and Solarte launched a two-run homer to right to put the Padres up. It was the first blown save of the year for Tolleson, who was 13 of 13 entering the night.

The Padres spoiled the third two-homer game in two weeks for Mitch Moreland. He homered in the first and again in the sixth, putting the Rangers up 4-3.

                Mariners 5, Angels 0

SEATTLE -- Hisashi Iwakuma rebounded from a shaky first inning to throw eight shutout innings and lead Seattle past Los Angeles.

Iwakuma allowed the first three batters of the game to reach base but gave up just one hit the rest of the way. He gave up three hits and two walks while striking out six in his second start since coming off the disabled list.

Mark Trumbo drove in two runs and Nelson Cruz went 3-for-3. Kyle Seager had two hits and scored twice.

                Giants 8, Phillies 5

SAN FRANCISCO -- Matt Duffy highlighted a five-run sixth inning with a two-run triple for his third hit of the game, sending San Francisco over staggering Philadelphia.

Brandon Crawford collected three hits, including a triple, as the Giants followed a season-best, 22-hit effort with 15 hits against six Phillies pitchers.

After home runs by Ryan Howard and Cody Asche gave Philadelphia a 4-1 lead through 5 1/2 innings, the Giants rallied after starter David Buchanan was pulled from the game.

                Brewers 7, Dodgers 1

LOS ANGELES -- Rookie Taylor Jungmann threw a three-hitter and Carlos Gomez drove in five runs to lead Milwaukee over Los Angeles.

Gerardo Parra homered as Milwaukee won for the 10th time in 13 games.

Jungmann induced three double plays and retired 11 in a row at one point.
