    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

What college football expert Phil Steele thinks about the ACC Coastal Division

    7) Virginia-- 5-19 in ACC last three years; make a bowl this year, or else.......

    6) Duke-- 11-6 in ACC last two years; they were 18-126 from 1995-2012.

    5) North Carolina-- Have 17 starters back but that defense has to be a LOT better.

    4) Pittsburgh-- Another new HC, but Narduzzi inherits a decent amount of talent.

    3) Georgia Tech-- Option offense is hard to prep for; they beat Clemson, Georgia last year, won their bowl game

    2) Miami-- Al Golden looks like young George Allen; time to start coaching like him.

    1) Virginia Tech-- 12-12 in ACC last three years, do the Hokies bounce back?

    **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind......

    13) 12,422 basketball fans paid $28 each to get into UNLV's two basketball arenas Friday to watch summer league games; thats a testament to the NBA's popularity.

    12) NBA TV will have summer league games on for next nine days, usually starting at 4pm eastern time. Highly competitive games, some guys playing for their careers.

    11) Deron Williams/Nets parted ways, then Williams signed with Dallas, which needed a starting point guard. Mavs traded for Zaza Pachulia, to play where DeAndre Jordan would've played had he signed with Dallas.

    10) San Antonio Spurs signed a 7-4 center from Serbia, who is 26, went undrafted back in 2010. From what I read, he has developed nicely and will be a typical Spur.

    9) NFL shortened Greg Hardy's suspension from ten games to four, meaning his first game will be against New England in Week 5.

    8) Saskatchewan Roughriders lost 35-32 in OT last night; they've scored 72 points in last two games but lost both in OT. Riders are 0-3 despite having led all three of their games in the fourth quarter.

Damn, its July 11 and its Week 3 in the CFL already?

    7) As far as Jason Pierre-Paul goes, apparently it is his broken thumb that is more of a problem than his amputated index finger. He has to be healthy when he signs his tender or else the Giants can put him on the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list and then they would control when they start paying him.

Sounds like a lot of legal mumbo-jumbo but as always, it is about the money.

    6) HR Derby will be timed this year, meaning there is more pressure on pitchers, so amateur pitchers like dads (Robinson Cano/Bryce Harper) or 71-year old Connie Mack coaches (Josh Hamilton) might not be used as often as in the past, which is too bad.

    5) Catcher Derek Norris led off the last four games for San Diego, the first time a catcher has ever led off for the Padres.

While I'm on the Padres, they are now 39-49, 7-16 since firing their manager. Maybe Cornell alum/GM AJ Preller should get a lefty for his bullpen; I'm told it helps.

    4) Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup three times in last six years, so they have salary cap problems; they traded Patrick Sharp to Dallas this week, which has to be a sad day for all ********* fans.

    3) Twins 8, Tigers 6-- Detroit led 6-0 in 8th inning, 6-1 in ninth; this was a horrible loss for a team struggling to stay in playoff contention.

Minnesota TV announcer Dick Bremer, who is excellent, called this game ".......the most improbable comeback I've seen IN YEARS!!!!"

While I'm here, Brian Dozier is an All-Star, whether he goes to Cincinnati or not.

    2) Pete Rose is obviously controversial; he once injured Ray Fosse when he barreled into the catcher while scoring the winning run in the 1970 All-Star Game. The guy who hit the ball that scored Rose was Jim Hickman, who was on the Cubs then but also is the first-ever Met to homer three times in one game and also the first Met to hit for the cycle. Just thought you'd like to know.

    1) Irony Department: Rose wound up serving 152 days in prison for tax issues in 1990-91; he did his time in a prison in Marion, IL-- Ray Fosse's hometown.

Not shockingly, Sale has been an under machine

In Chris Sale's past 11 starts the Chicago White Sox are 1-9-1 over/under.

In those 11 starts, dating back to May 12, he has allowed a combined 17 earned runs which is a mere 1.5 runs per game. And in only two of those games has the team facing Sale tallied more than two runs in the game.

Sale will take to the mound when the White Sox take on the rival Chicago Cubs Saturday.

Pitcher change announced - Adam Conley, Miami

Miami vs. Cincinnati on July 11 at 4:10 PM. Previous Starter: Mat Latos.

            Buchholz departs with elbow tightness

BOSTON -- Boston Red Sox ace Clay Buchholz left Friday night's start against the New York Yankees in the fourth inning with tightness in his right elbow.

The right-hander, who had an 0.87 ERA during a four-game winning streak he brought into the game, was pitching to former teammate Stephen Drew with one out in the inning. Catcher Sandy Leon went out to the mound after the second pitch to Drew and the meeting appeared to be to go over signs. It wasn't.

While Leon was on the mound, first baseman Mike Napoli came in and that started a parade from the dugout. Then Buchholz, who has a history of suffering injuries when he was pitching well, left the game.

Left-hander Robbie Ross Jr. replaced Buchholz, who left trailing 1-0.

MLB roundup: Twins win after trailing 6-1 in ninth

MINNEAPOLIS -- Brian Dozier's three-run, walk-off homer with one out in the ninth capped a seven-run inning as the Minnesota Twins erased a five-run deficit in an 8-6 win over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night at Target Field.

Minnesota struggled to do much of anything against Tigers starter Justin Verlander for eight innings but rallied from 6-1 down in the ninth for the win. For Dozier, it was his third homer of the week and second walk-off blast in three days.

Tigers closer Joakim Soria, working on his third consecutive day, took the loss, allowing four runs, two hits, a walk and a hit batter.

The ninth-inning rally started with a single by Joe Mauer and was followed by a double into the left-field corner by Miguel Sano. Eddie Rosario's RBI single two batters later forced Tigers manager Brad Ausmus to go to his closer.

Soria lost Aaron Hicks, walking him after getting ahead 0-2 in the count. With the bases loaded, Soria hit Kurt Suzuki with a pitch. Danny Santana, the No. 9 batter, slapped a single to center, scoring two and setting up Dozier's three-run blast on the first pitch.

            Pirates 5, Cardinals 2

PITTSBURGH -- Gerrit Cole pitched seven innings to become the first 13-game winner in the major leagues and the first Pirates pitcher to have that many wins before the All-Star break since 1971 as Pittsburgh beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-2 on Friday night.

Cole (13-3) allowed two runs -- both on third baseman Matt Carpenter's third-inning homer -- and six hits while striking out three and walking two. The right-hander became just the second Pirates pitcher to win 13 games before the All-Star break, joining Dock Ellis, who had 14 in 1971.

Neil Walker had three hits, including a two-run homer in the fourth, his seventh home run of the season that extended the Pirates' lead to 5-2.

Closer Mark Melancon pitched a scoreless ninth for his National League-leading 29th save in 30 opportunities.

The Pirates won for the sixth time in seven games and drew within 4 1/2 games of the Cardinals in the National League Central in the second game of a four-game series between the teams with the best records in the major leagues.

            Yankees 5, Red Sox 1

BOSTON -- New York took advantage of some huge breaks in a three-run fourth inning and went on to defeat Boston.

Ahead 1-0 on a mammoth home run by Alex Rodriguez, the Yankees had second and third and one out in the fourth when Boston ace Clay Buchholz left the game with tightness in his right elbow. The Red Sox were then guilty of three straight infield miscues, two of them by first baseman Mike Napoli, and Rodriguez capped the rally with a bases-loaded walk.

The win was the third in a row for the first-place Yankees, while the last-place Red Sox saw a four-game winning streak stopped and fell back to 6 1/2 games out in the AL East.

            Marlins 1, Reds 0

MIAMI -- Right-hander Mike Leake pitched eight scoreless innings and right fielder Jay Bruce slugged a solo home run, leading Cincinnati to a shutout win over Miami at Marlins Park.

All-Star closer Aroldis Chapman pitched the ninth inning for his 18th save of the season. Chapman reached 103 mph with his fastball, striking out the side.

Leake (6-5), who beat the Marlins 5-0 on June 19 and had a 4-1 record and a 1.65 ERA in five career starts against the franchise entering Friday, was at his best yet again.

            Rays 3, Astros 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Erasmo Ramirez has quietly become a reliable winner in the Rays' rotation, and Friday was no different, as he held Houston to one run in six innings on the way to a win for Tampa Bay at Tropicana Field.

Tampa Bay (44-45) came home from a 1-6 road trip, having dropped 15 of 18 overall, but got back on track with strong pitching. That started with Ramirez -- the Rays are 7-1 in his last eight starts -- and finished with the bullpen throwing three innings of scoreless one-hit relief.

Ramirez (8-3) held the Astros to one run on four hits in six innings, his ninth start this season allowing one run or less, one short of the major-league lead. The Rays scored two runs on RBI groundouts in the sixth to take the lead, adding a run in the seventh on a solo home run by Brandon Guyer.

            Indians 5, A's 1

CLEVELAND -- Danny Salazar came within one out of his second career complete game, and Cleveland broke a 1-1 tie with a four-run rally with two outs in the sixth inning as the Indians extended their winning streak to four games with a victory over Oakland at Progressive Field.

The right-hander Salazar (8-4) gave up one unearned run on five hits. He struck out eight and walked one. He was removed from the game with two outs in the ninth inning after giving up a single to Ben Zobrist and hitting Billy Butler.

Cody Allen relieved Salazar and retired Ike Davis on an infield popup to pick up his 19th save.

            Mets 4, Diamondbacks 2

NEW YORK -- Rookie right-hander Noah Syndergaard struck out a career-high 13 in eight dominant innings and New York provided him the support he needed by scoring all their runs in the first inning in a win over Arizona at Citi Field.

With their fifth victory in seven games, the Mets ensured they would reach the All-Star break with a winning record. The Diamondbacks, who lost for just the second time in seven games, were trying to move ablve .500 for the first time since April 22.

Syndergaard (4-4) allowed one run and four hits and walked two. He has given up one run or less in four of his last five starts, a stretch in which he has a 1.97 ERA and has struck out 38 batters in 32 innings.

            Angels 7, Mariners 3

SEATTLE -- Mike Trout and C.J. Cron both hit two home runs and Los Angeles starter Hector Santiago cooled off Seattle's bats.

Trout went 3-for-5 while driving in four runs, hitting his 25th and 26th homers of the season in the process. Cron has five homers, four of which came in the eight games played since his June 28 recall.

Santiago (6-4) held the Mariners to one run and eight hits in seven innings. Seattle produced three hits and a run in the first inning but never had a runner get past second base in his final six innings.

            Dodgers 3, Brewers 2

LOS ANGELES -- Joc Pederson drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI double in the seventh inning and Los Angeles rallied past Milwaukee.

Andre Ethier's two-run single in the seventh tied the score at 2 before Pederson followed with the winner. Chin-hui Tsao picked up his first major league win in eight years and Kenley Jansen pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 15th save in 16 chances.

            White Sox 1, Cubs 0

CHICAGO -- Emilio Bonifacio broke a scoreless tie in the eighth inning, scoring on J.B. Shuck's one-out sacrifice liner as the White Sox beat the Cubs 1-0.

The White Sox took the opener of the three-game interleague city series in front of an announced crowd of 41,530 at Wrigley Field on a sun-kissed afternoon featuring temperatures in the mid-70s.

The victory was the third straight and eighth in 10 games for the White Sox. The Cubs dropped their second in a row.

            Orioles 3, Nationals 2

BALTIMORE -- Jonathan Schoop hit a solo homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning off right-hander Tanner Roark to lift Baltimore to a walk-off victory over Washington.

Schoop lined a homer to left field on a 2-2 pitch from Roark for the first walk-off homer of his young career. The Orioles snapped a three-game losing streak and won for the first time in 2015 when trailing after seven innings.

The Nationals scored twice in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead, which they held until Baltimore tied it in the eighth.

            Rangers 4, Padres 3

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Prince Fielder and Adrian Beltre hit back-to-back home runs and Texas made the lead stand up against San Diego.

The Rangers snapped a five-game skid overall and an eight-game losing streak at Globe Life Park. The Padres have lost a season high six straight games.

Texas led 2-0 in the fourth before Fielder hit his 14th homer of the season and Beltre followed with his seventh -- but the first since May 25.

            Royals 3, Blue Jays 0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Eric Hosmer stroked four hits and Danny Duffy combined with three relievers on a six-hit shutout as Kansas City won its sixth straight game.

Hosmer's four-hit game was his first since July 1, 2014, and raised his average to .292. Salvador Perez led off the eighth with his 15th home run, a shot off reliever Ryan Tepera.

Duffy allowed four singles in six innings to pick up the victory. Greg Holland worked the ninth for his 18th save.

            Giants 15, Phillies 2

SAN FRANCISCO -- Hunter Pence capped an eight-run explosion against Philadelphia ace Cole Hamels in the fourth inning with a grand slam, powering San Francisco Giants in the opener of a three-game series.

Joe Panik, Matt Duffy and Justin Maxwell banged out four hits apiece, and center fielder Angel Pagan chipped in with three as the Giants set a team record for most hits in game at AT&T Park with 22 against five Phillies pitchers. All-Star left-hander Madison Bumgarner was the beneficiary of the offensive onslaught and contributed to it with two singles and an RBI.

Top Over umpire working this game Saturday

Dana DeMuth, the top Over umpire in the Major Leagues, will be behind the dish in Baltimore as the Orioles host the Washington Nationals Saturday.

DeMuth is tied at the top of our MLB Umpire Over/Under standings with Dale Scott at 11-4 O/U on the season.

Despite his excellent O/U count, the under has cashed in back-to-back ball games and three of the past five when calling balls and strikes.

Jordan Zimmermann and Miguel Gonzalez are probable to start for the Nats and O's respectively. Oddsmakers have a total of 8 on the board.

Under wagers score big once again Friday

After a hot day for Under bets on Thursday, the Under continued to sizzle at the betting window, posting a record of 11-4 in Friday's Major League Baseball slate.

Over the past two days, the Over/Under count in the big leagues is 6-19 with a full docket of action Saturday.

Most notably, the Detroit Tigers, fresh off an insane 19-game Over run, bounced back from an Under on Thursday to register a win for Over bettors. The Tigers had a 6-1 lead in the ninth, but lost 8-6 thanks to a seven-run ninth by the Minnesota Twins.

New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox (-127, 9)

Alex Rodriguez isn't heading to the All-Star Game but he aims to continue his fine season when the New York Yankees visit Boston in Saturday's second contest of a three-game series. Rodriguez homered among two hits in the series opener as New York posted a 5-1 victory to maintain its three-game lead in the American League East.

Rodriguez's homer was his 17th of the season and his 55th career smash against Boston. He also drew a bases-loaded walk to raise his RBI count to 49 as he continues a strong comeback season after missing all of 2014. The Red Sox had a four-game winning streak halted in the opener and lost for only the third time in 11 games. Boston left fielder Hanley Ramirez is 1-for-12 with five strikeouts over the past three games after hitting three homers in a four-game stretch.

De La Rosa futile against the Braves in his career

Colorado Rockies pitcher Jorge De La Rosa has not delivered the goods against the Atlanta Braves in five career games against the NL East club.

De La Rosa has a personal record of 1-1 in five appearances (three starts) and also owns an ERA of 7.71 and a WHIP of 1.92. The southpaw has allowed 25 hits in just 18.2 innings of work against Braves' hitters.

The Rockies are presently being offered around -156 (Atlanta +144) and books have a total of 10 on the board.

One of the best Under arms on the mound Saturday

Jake Odorizzi of the Tampa Bay Rays takes the bump Saturday and has supplied pretty good incentive to back the Under so far this season.

The Rays' righty has a personal record of 4-5 in 12 starts this season, but the Under has cashed in 10 of his 12 starts. The 25-year-old has a 2.47 ERA and stellar 1.02 WHIP.

There is just an average of five runs being scored in games Odirizzi has started this season and the Under has cashed in eight of his previous nine outings.

Odorizzi is slated to start Saturday's game against the Houston Astros. The total has dropped to 6.5 from the opening number of 7.

Big difference in Carrasco's home and away starts

Carlos Carrasco of the Cleveland Indians is the probable starter for Saturday's date with the Oakland A's at Progressive Field, but he has not been as good in front of his home fans as he has been on the road.

In nine starts this season, the Venezuelan is 4-5 with a 5.11 ERA and 1.39 WHIP. In eight road starts, Carrasco is 6-2 with a 3.29 ERA and solid 1.01 WHIP.

Carrasco and the Indians will look to chalk up a W as big -181 home favorites. The A's, who are expected to counter with righty Chris Bassitt, are being offered around +166.

Reds RHP Iglesias comes off DL

The Cincinnati Reds reinstated right-hander Raisel Iglesias from the 15-day disabled list Saturday.

Iglesias has been on the disabled list since June 5 with a strained left oblique. He is 1-1 with a 5.11 ERA in six games, including four starts.

Iglesias was expected to make a spot start Saturday against the Miami Marlins in place of right-hander Anthony DeSclafani, who is bothered by lingering tightness in his gluteus. DeSclafani is expected to miss only one turn and rejoin the rotation right after the All-Star break.

The Reds also optioned center fielder Yorman Rodriguez to Triple-A Louisville.

Lackey has been bringing his best lately

St. Louis Cardinals hurler John Lackey has been in excellent form in his previous five outings, going at least seven innings and posting a personal record of 3-1 (Cardinals are 4-1) and a 1.75 ERA.

Lackey is coming off a particularly strong outing his last time out, going seven innings in a 6-0 win over the Chicago Cubs on July 6.

The 36-year-old is probable to start against A.J. Burnett and Pittsburgh Pirates Saturday evening. Books are offering the Red Birds around +109 (Pirates -118) and the total is 6.5.

Wilson strong versus Mariners in two starts this year

Los Angeles Angels starter C.J. Wilson has flexed his muscle against the Seattle Mariners in two starts this season, going 15 innings and surrendering just two earned runs.

The Halos won both meetings with the Under cashing in each instance as well.

The southpaw is slated to get the ball against the club's AL West rival Saturday evening. Books are offering L.A. around -115 with the Mariners, who are expected to start the struggling Hisahi Iwakuma, are in the +106 vicinity.

Twins have won their past five when Hughes starts

Phil Hughes is expected to get the ball for the Twins today, with Minnesota hoping to win their sixth consecutive contest when he is pitching.

In those five starts, Hughes is 3-0 and has only allowed 2.2 runs per game. Maybe even more impressive has been his control, as Hughes has walked just two batters during that span.

The Twins are currently -126 when they host the Detroit Tigers Saturday.

Cardinals place RHP Harris on DL

The St. Louis Cardinals placed right-hander Mitch Harris on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a right groin strain.

The move is retroactive to July 9. Harris is 1-1 with a 3.10 ERA in 19 relief appearances this season.

The team also recalled right-hander Sam Tuivailala and left-hander Nick Greenwood from Triple-A Memphis.

In addition, first baseman Xavier Scruggs was optioned to Memphis following Friday night's game.

Tuivailala, 22, who appeared in three games for the Cardinals earlier this season, has compiled a 3-0 mark with 12 saves and a 1.78 ERA in 30 games at Memphis, striking out 26 in 30 1/3 innings.

Greenwood, 27, was 7-3 with a 5.42 ERA in 22 games (12 starts) at Memphis, but since becoming a regular starter for the Redbirds on May 25, he is 5-2 with a 3.88 ERA in 51 innings.

Scruggs is hitting .262 with seven RBIs in 17 games with the Cardinals this year.

This pitcher has yet to record a win this season

The Philadelphia Phillies need all the pitching help they can get, and it has not come from David Buchanan. In the right-hander's five starts this season, the Phillies are 0-5.

On the season Buchanan is 0-5 with a 8.76 ERA, those starts all came in April before he was demoted to Triple-A.

The Phillies are currently +176 when they visit AT&T Park Saturday.

Under is red-hot following a loss from this team

The over/under has gone an impressive 1-11 in the Atlanta Braves' past 12 games following a loss.

The Braves offense, which has not been lighting the world on fire this year, has only averaged 2.9 runs during those 12 games.

The total is currently 10 when the Braves visit the Colorado Rockies Saturday.

Padres offense non-existent during losing streak

The San Diego Padres have dropped their past six games and their offense has been down right hard to watch. The Friars have managed a meager 1.7 runs per game during their skid.

Total bettors have had some profitable games though, with the over.under going 0-5-1 in the Padres past six.

San Diego is currently +108 when they visit the Texas Rangers Saturday.
