    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Atlanta Braves have used 49 players already this season, 11 who had never been in major leagues before this year.

-- Minimum payroll for an NBA team this season will be $63M.

-- Jets play Giants this year, giving them is essence nine home games.

-- Costs $10M to apply for an NHL expansion team; $2M of that isn't refundable.

-- Northwestern's basketball team has finished over .500 in Big 14 play once in last 47 seasons; don't use academics as an excuse (Duke-Vandy-Stanford are all good).

-- Pirates' Josh Harrison (thumb) is out for seven weeks, a big blow.

    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Wrapping up a wild, weird Wednesday......

    13) Lesson of the Day: Don't screw around with fireworks; you can get hurt!!!!

Two NFL players lost a total of three fingers this week because of accidents while playing with fireworks, which are dangerous if you're not an expert. Jason Pierre-Paul may have blown a $60M contract by losing his index finger in an accident. Oy.

    12) Then there is DeAndre Jordan, who used the NBA's weird rules to renege on the Dallas Mavericks to stay with the Clippers. For some reason, he signed a four-year contract instead of the maximum five with LA, but nothing about this story is normal.

    11) I'm a little confused by all this, but the bottom line appears to be: Mavericks are not happy, Jordan/Clippers both look bad, the NBA looks foolish and I had no idea Chandler Parsons of the Mavericks has a supermodel girlfriend. Good for him.

It is doubtful Dallas would've let Tyson Chandler walk if they hadn't signed Jordan. They're in a difficult place now; good big guys are hard to find.

    10) Jordan appears to be an attention addict, much like an insecure teenager who needs to be told how much he is needed. Maybe he'll practice his foul shots now.

    9) Mavericks-Clippers has to be an Opening Night game, right? Christmas?

    8) Mets went 414 plate appearances without a home run until Eric Campbell hit one in top of the 9th Wednesday. Continues to be amazing that a team with so much good pitching hasn't traded for any kind of a hitter.

Saw a 7-5 force play at third base in this game; have never seen one before. Hitter on Giants hit a dunker to LF but runner on second got confused and went back to the base. When the ball fell in, LF Campbell threw him out at third, costing the batter a hit.

    7) Mets' TV announcer Ron Darling told a story on air yesterday about when he was a high school player who pitched in tournaments during the summer.

One day a scout came up to Darling and asked him if he was going to go to college. He said that he was and scout replied "Good, because you'll never pitch in pro baseball."

Darling still sounded annoyed yesterday, saying he used that quote as motivation every day from then until the end of his very good major league career.

    6) Total of ten runs were scored in three Met-Giant games this week.

    5) Pitcher Tommy Milone had another strong outing for the Twins; he is a good but not a great pitcher, but you can win with him. His career record is 36-24.

One of the worst part of the whole "Moneyball" approach is that it diminishes the person and whatever intangibles are involved. Milone was 6-3, 3.55 in 16 starts for Oakland LY, but they basically discarded him when they traded for Jason Hammel on July 4th. they sent Milone to AAA instead of keeping him in the bullpen-- it was wasting a useful player so they could keep the awful Jim Johnson in the bullpen. He was traded to Minnesota at the trading deadline. Ugh.

Anyway, good for Milone; he is back in the majors and doing well.

    4) Cole Hamels has a no-trade list with 20 teams on it; makes it tough to trade him.

    3) How bad is Hanley Ramirez in outfield? Ramirez has DH'd twice this week, with David Ortiz playing first base. Ortiz hadn't played 1B in an AL game since 2006.

    2) Former NBA coach Mike D'Antoni sold his house in Manhattan Beach for $9.5M this month. Looks like a real nice house. For $9.5M, it better be.

    1) What must the New Jersey Giants think when they send their trainer to Miami to see Jason Pierre-Paul and he won't see the trainer? Someone leaked his medical info to ESPN, which opens up a whole different can of worms, but the young man lost his index finger, which is a lot worse than when Ronnie Lott lost his pinky during his Hall of Fame playing career.

Sports are big business; can he still be a useful player without an index finger?

MLB roundup: Gomez homers twice as Brewers rally

MILWAUKEE -- Carlos Gomez hit two home runs -- including a three-run, go-ahead shot in the eighth inning -- as the Milwaukee Brewers rallied for a 6-5 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday.

The Brewers trailed 4-0 after the Braves hit two home runs in the third inning -- a three-run shot by Cameron Maybin and a solo blast by Kelly Johnson.

Khris Davis hit a two-run homer for the Brewers in the fourth inning, and Gomez hit a solo homer in the sixth inning and the winner in the eighth. It was the third multi-home run game of Gomez's career and his first in nearly two seasons.

          Mets 4, Giants 1

SAN FRANCISCO -- All-Star Jacob deGrom pitched eight shutout innings and combined with two relievers on a five-hitter as New York beat San Francisco.

Eric Campbell singled and scored off right-hander Jake Peavy in the seventh inning, then belted a two-run, game-clinching home run off reliever Jean Machi in the ninth, enabling the Mets to win two out of three in a series that featured two shutouts.

DeGrom (9-6) became just the NL's seventh nine-game winner, and he lowered his ERA to 2.14, the fifth-best mark in the league.

          Twins 5, Orioles 3

MINNEAPOLIS -- Brian Dozier's sixth-inning home run kick-started the Twins' offense as Minnesota earned its first sweep of Baltimore since 2007.

One of five players competing in the American League's Final Vote campaign for the last spot in next week's All-Star Game, Dozier had two hits and stole two bases. His two-run blast in the sixth off Bud Norris gave Minnesota a 2-1 lead. It was his 18th homer of the season, the most among big-league second basemen.

Joe Mauer followed with a solo home run into the seats in left field, the first time this season Minnesota hit back-to-back home runs.

          Tigers 5, Mariners 4

SEATTLE -- Rookie Jefry Marte went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs and Nick Castellanos delivered the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the seventh inning as Detroit beat Seattle.

Castellanos also hit an RBI single in the first inning, and Marte homered in the fourth inning to put Detroit up 4-2.

Dustin Ackley drove in two runs for Seattle, and Mark Trumbo went 3-for-5 and scored twice.

          Indians 4, Astros 2

CLEVELAND -- David Murphy's two-run double in the eighth inning broke at 2-2 tie and lifted Cleveland past Houston.

With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Francisco Lindor doubled off Joe Thatcher (1-3). Michael Brantley drew a walk. Murphy then ripped a line drive over the head of right fielder Preston Tucker. The ball bounced off the wall for a double, driving in both runners and giving Cleveland a 4-2 lead.

Trevor Bauer (8-5) gave up two runs on six hits, with nine strikeouts and no walks to get the win. Cody Allen pitched the ninth inning to pick up his 17th save.

          Red Sox 6, Marlins 3

BOSTON -- Rick Porcello snapped a career-worst seven-game losing streak with a little help from his offense, and Boston stretched its winning streak to a season-high four games with a win over Miami.

Porcello (5-9) lasted six innings, allowing two runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out four as Boston swept the two-game series.

David Ortiz had two hits, including a two-run homer in the Red Sox's four-run third inning. Koji Uehara picked up his 21st save by throwing a scoreless ninth inning.

          Pirates 5, Padres 2

PITTSBURGH -- Gregory Polanco delivered his second winning hit in as many games, driving home Travis Ishikawa from first base with a two-out single off the right field wall in the eighth inning to give Pittsburgh a victory over San Diego.

Pittsburgh won its fifth straight, and San Diego lost its fifth in a row. It was also Pittsburgh's 22nd come-from-behind win of the season.

Padres starter Andrew Cashner was in control through six innings, allowing just one hit as San Diego clung to a 2-1 lead. However, Pittsburgh broke through in the seventh to tie the score after Neil Walker led off with a double, advanced to third on Jung Ho Kang's fly ball and scored on Francisco Cervelli's groundout.

          Yankees 5, A's 4

NEW YORK -- Mark Teixeira hit solo home runs in consecutive at-bats, and New York held off Oakland.

Teixeira recorded his 39th career game with at least two home runs and second this season but did not get a chance at a third home run when he was intentionally walked with two outs in the seventh.

Both home runs came off reliever Evan Scribner (2-2), who came on after Oakland starter Scott Kazmir exited with left triceps tightness in the third inning.

          Cardinals 6, Cubs 5

CHICAGO -- Jhonny Peralta's two-run homer in the ninth helped lift St. Louis to a come-from-behind victory over Chicago.

The victory salvaged a 2-2 series split for the Cardinals while the Cubs saw a two-game winning streak snapped.

Peralta lined a 1-2 pitch off reliever Pedro Strop into the left-field basket for his 12th homer of the year and scored pinch runner Pete Kozma.

White Sox 7, Blue Jays 6 (11 innings)

-- CHICAGO – Adam Eaton drilled a walk-off solo homer on the second pitch in the 11th inning to give Chicago a victory against Toronto at U.S. Cellular Field.

Eaton's sixth homer of the season came off right-handed closer Roberto Osuna, who had picked up his fourth save the night before after cementing the closer's role for Toronto.

Chicago finally had a big night offensively at home. The White Sox finished with 16 hits and scored more than four runs in front of their home fans for the first time since May 9, a string of 24 straight games.

          Diamondbacks 7, Rangers 4

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Arizona took advantage of scoring opportunities with two outs to beat Texas and complete a two-game sweep of the interleague series.

The Diamondbacks scored all seven of their runs with two outs, with homers from A.J. Pollock and Welington Castillo the big blows.

Pollock's three-run homer capped a five-run second inning against Texas starter Matt Harrison, who was making his first big-league start since last May because of a back issue that led to spinal fusion surgery.

          Royals 9, Rays 7

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Lorenzo Cain and Jarrod Dyson homered and Alcides Escobar stroked four hits as Kansas City held on to beat skidding Tampa Bay.

The victory, however, may have been costly for the Royals as All-Star left fielder Alex Gordon was carted from the field in the fourth inning with a left groin injury. He was taken for a MRI to determine the severity of the injury.

Rays right-hander Chris Archer (9-6), who was a candidate to start the All-Star game, had his worst outing of his career, giving up a career-high nine runs and 12 hits in six innings. Archer entered the game 6-0 with a 0.77 ERA in seven road starts this season. He had allowed three or fewer earned runs in a club-record 20 straight road starts.

          Dodgers 5, Phillies 0

LOS ANGELES -- Clayton Kershaw pitched a complete-game shutout, leading Los Angeles to a shutout victory over Philadelphia at Dodger Stadium.

Catcher A.J. Ellis and shortstop Jimmy Rollins homered as the National League West-leading Dodgers bounced back from a 7-2 thrashing by the Phillies on Tuesday. Ellis went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Rollins was 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Kershaw (6-6), who hasn’t allowed a run by the Phillies in 31 innings, struck out 13 and scattered eight hits. It was Kershaw’s first win since he blanked the St. Louis Cardinals for eight innings in an 8-0 romp by Los Angeles on June 6.

          Angels 3, Rockies 2

DENVER -- A single by Johnny Giavotella with two outs and the bases loaded in the ninth gave Los Angeles a win over Colorado and a sweep of their two-game series.

Giavotella, who has thrived in late-inning situations, singled off closer John Axford (1-2). The game-winning rally began when David Freese singled with one out.

Joe Smith (3-2) pitched the eighth and former Rockies closer Huston Street earned his 24th save in 26 opportunities this season.

          Reds at Nationals, ppd. (rain)

WASHINGTON -- The series finale between Cincinnati and Washington was rained out. A makeup date was not immediately announced.

                MLB

                Thursday, July 9

Price has been dominant against the Twins

David Price has dominated the Minnesota Twins since coming to the Detroit Tigers, with the leftie posting a 3-0 record in his past three starts against Minny.

During that three game span Price has allowed a mere three runs over 22.1 innings pitched.

The Tigers are currently -146 when they head to Minnesota Thursday.

Red-hot pitcher has this team cruising to victories

Carlos Martinez has brought his game to another level as of late, with the St. Louis Cardinals going 8-2 in his past 10 starts.

Martinez is 6-2 in his past 10 starts while posting a 1.52 ERA. Seven of those starts have seen Martinez allow on earned run or less.

St. Louis is currently -110 when they travel to PNC Park Thursday.

Oakland's Chavez struggles as a dog

The Oakland A's have lost seven consecutive games when right-hander Jesse Chavez takes the mound as underdog.

That is exactly what Chavez (4-8, 3.20 ERA) and the A's will be when close out their series with the New York Yankees Thursday.

The A's are currently listed as +123 dogs going up against the Bronx Bombers and right-hander Masahiro Tanaka (4-3, 3.94 ERA).

Dickey struggling, still winless on the road

R.A. Dickey has not been good on the road this season with the knuckleballer posting a 0-6 record and a 6.04 ERA while allowing opponents to bat .337 in eight starts away from Toronto this season. Not surprisingly, the Blue Jays have had difficulties competing in those games, going 1-7.

Dickey has allowed four more runs on the road than he has at home, despite starting an extra game at home this season.

Dickey will take to the mound Thursday at U.S. Cellular Field, with the Jays currently listed at -104.

Chance of thunderstorms in Kansas City

There is a chance of thunderstorms and a 35 percent chance of rain for Thursday afternoon's contest between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Royals in Kansas City.

There will also be a slight five mile per hour wind blowing across the field from first to third base.

The Rays send right-hander Nathan Karns (4-4, 3.21 ERA) to the hill to take on Royals' righty Yordano Ventura (3-6, 4.68 ERA). The Royals are listed as -132 favorites. The total is currently 7.0.

                19 cashes and counting...

What else can be said about the Detroit Tigers over streak that we haven't said already?

It is one of the most remarkable betting streaks in recent memory and if you haven't been riding the streak, shame on you.

The Tigers extended the streak to an unfathomable 19 consecutive games with their 5-4 win over the Seattle Mariners Wednesday.

The Tigers streak is the longest totals streak since at least the 1999 season - as far back as our records go. The previous record was held by the then Florida Marlins, who hit 15 consecutive overs in the 2005 season.

Detroit is scoring 5.79 runs per game over the course of the streak, more than a run more than their season average of 4.43 runs per game. But what makes over bettors excited, is the fact they are allowing an even bigger 6.42 runs per game.

Over bettors riding the streak hope the Tigers can extend the streak to a ridiculous 20 games when they begin a four-game series in Minnesota against the Twins Thursday.

Detroit sends ace David Price and his 2.54 ERA (10-7 Over/under this season) to the mound for the series opener against Minnesota's Mike Pelfrey 6-8 O/U). Pelfrey has struggled in his last three starts, pitching to a 9.95 ERA.

Rays getting thumped by AL Central opponents

The Tampa Bay Rays have not enjoyed playing American League Central teams, losing eight consecutive games against them.

Not only are the Rays losing those games, they are losing them badly, getting outscored 52-21 in the process.

Tampa Bay is currently a +122 road dog in their series finale with the Kansas City Royals Thursday afternoon.

They Rays send right-hander Nathan Karns (4-4, 3.21 ERA) to the hill to take on Royals' righty Yordano Ventura (3-6, 4.68 ERA).

                  Pelfrey's home/road splits are astonishing

Mike Pelfrey has been a very different pitcher when at Target Field compared to everywhere else.

In seven starts at home this season Pelfrey is 3-1 with a 1.80 ERA with batter hitting for a .235 average. On the road, Pelfrey is 2-4 with a 6.02 ERA while allowing a .344 batting average.

The Twins +126 when they will host the Detroit Tigers Thursday.

Martinez' stellar play has the under cashing

The St. Louis Cardinals have gone 0-7-1 over/under in Carlos Martinez' past eight starts. Those eight starts have seen the Dominican-born right-hander allow a combined nine earned runs.

The Cardinals have not especially provided a lot of run support in those games, with the team averaging three runs per game.

Currently, the total is set at 7 when the Cards visit the Pirates Thursday.

Under cashing when these two teams meet

The Cincinnati Reds and Miami Marlins have met three times this season, with all three of those games going under the closing total.

The two teams combined for an average of 5.7 runs in their first series this season, with their total never closing less than 8.0. The losing team has especially struggled while scoring a combined two runs in those games.

7.0 is the current total when the Marlins host the Reds Thursday.
