CFL Betting Notes - Week 2

The underdogs ruled the day in Week 1 of the new CFL season with a straight-up record of 3-1 and a perfect 4-0 run against the spread. Ottawa started things off with a stunning 20-16 victory over Montreal last Thursday as a 9 ½-point road favorite after winning just two games all last year.

In Friday night’s rematch of last season’s Grey Cup, Hamilton once again fell to Calgary in a tight 24-23 loss, but the Tiger-Cats easily covered as six-point road underdogs. Last Saturday’s action started with Toronto upsetting Edmonton 26-11 as a nine-point home favorite. Later that night, Winnipeg completed the ATS sweep with a 30-26 win against Saskatchewan as a seven point underdog on the road.

    Sunday, July 5

Toronto Argonauts (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) vs. Saskatchewan Roughriders (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS)
    Point-spread: Saskatchewan -3
    Total: 51

    Game Overview

Toronto stunned Edmonton last week behind a stellar performance by back-up quarterback Trevor Harris, who was starting for the injured Ricky Ray. He ended the day with 347 yards passing and three touchdown throws while completing a ridiculous 88.8 percent of his 27 attempts. He also did a good job of spreading the ball around with eight different players posting at least one catch.

It looks like it will be another rough road for Saskatchewan in regards to its quarterback situation after Darian Durant was lost for the season with a torn Achilles. Veteran Kevin Glenn was added to the roster this past offseason and he is set to take over the reins as the team’s new starter. The Roughriders’ rushing attack got a solid effort from Anthony Allen in last week’s loss with 102 yards on 11 carries.

    Betting Trends

The road team in this matchup has won four of the last six meetings both SU and ATS and the total has gone OVER in four of the last five games. Toronto has the slight 3-2 edge both SU and ATS in the last five meetings.

Game of the day: Argonauts at Roughriders
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Argonauts at Saskatchewan Roughriders (-3.5, 51)

The Toronto Argonauts look to build off their excellent start when they travel to Regina to face the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Sunday. The Argonauts opened the season with a spirited 26-11 win over the Edmonton Eskimos in Fort McMurray, Alberta and have the chance to go 2-0 for the first time since 1997.

Toronto dropped seven of its nine road games last season, but have beaten the Roughriders in two of the last three games at Mosaic Stadium. Saskatchewan is left to pick up the pieces after starting quarterback Darian Durant suffered a season-ending Achilles tendon injury in the 30-26 setback to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Veteran signal-caller Kevin Glenn will take over the starting duties as the Roughriders hope to recover from their double-blow and avoid going 0-2 for the first time in four years. "Kevin has had success everywhere he's been," Saskatchewan head coach Corey Chamblin told reporters. "So I fully expect him to continue doing the same thing here."

      TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, TSN, ESPN2

LINE HISTORY: The initial spread opened at SSK -3, but has shifted to -3.5. The total has stayed firm at 51.

INJURY REPORT: Argos - OL Brandon Braxton (Ques-Suspension) Riders - WR Chaz Schilens (Ques-Suspension), LB Shea Emry (Doub-Neck), WR Weston Dressler (Ques-Undisclosed)

ABOUT THE ARGONAUTS (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS, 0-1 O/U): Trevor Harris was named one of the CFL Top Performers of the Week after going 24-of-27 for 347 yards and three touchdowns in just his second career start. Defensive lineman Cleyon Laing escaped punishment after the league reviewed his low hit on Mike Reilly, which sidelined the Edmonton quarterback for 10-12 weeks, and concluded he was pushed into the QB by an offensive lineman. Brandon Whitaker rushed for 117 yards on 14 carries and added 57 yards and a touchdown through the air on his Toronto debut.

ABOUT THE ROUGHRIDERS (0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS, 1-0 O/U): Durant was 13-of-18 for 165 yards and two touchdowns before he was carted off late in the second quarter while Glenn went 13-of-18 for 120 yards and an interception. Anthony Allen rushed for a team-high 102 yards and fellow running back Jerome Messam added 75 yards and a touchdown to pace a potent ground attack. Defensive end John Chick continues to terrorize opposing quarterbacks as he recorded a sack in Week 1 after leading the CFL with 15 last season.

      TRENDS:

*Argonauts are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games following a S.U. win.
*Roughriders are 1-9 ATS in their last 10 games overall.

We hope you are not missing out on this CFL trend

Following Saturday night's 27-16 win by the Ottawa RedBlacks over the B.C. Lions, underdogs are still a perfect 6-0 against the spread.

Both the RedBlacks and the Montreal Alouettes easily covered as home dogs in Week 2, with the RedBlacks entering Saturyda's game as 3-point home dogs, while the Ales topped the Calgary Stampeders 29-11 as 9.5-point home dogs.

The Toronto Argonauts will try to keep the streak going for the dogs, currently pegged at +3.5 for their game Sunday at the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

              Storm-Dream Preview

Coach Michael Cooper's move to shorten his bench paid off for the inconsistent Atlanta Dream in their last contest.

With two players rejoining to the roster, it remains to be seen how Cooper plans to handle his rotation going forward.

Atlanta returns from an eight-day layoff to host the Seattle Storm on Sunday.

Cooper admitted to being a bit generous with playing time as the Dream (4-6) got off to a rough start to the season, but he used only seven players in a 72-69 win over Washington on July 26.

Angel McCoughtry scored 18 points and Matee Ajavon added 17. McCoughtry, whose 20.5 points per game ranks second in the league, is among the leading vote-getters for the WNBA All-Star game along with teammate Shoni Schimmel.

However, Schimmel didn't get off the bench against the Mystics after playing one minute in a 100-96 overtime loss to Chicago on June 24. She's averaging 4.9 points in 16.3 minutes after scoring 8.3 in nearly five minutes more per game as a rookie last season.

"What I think is now we've got to get our rotation and our chemistry down," Cooper told the team's official website. "I think what we have been doing is starting out good, then I'll come with four people and our energy goes down. So I'm just looking for some consistency and I think that is important for us to be consistent in our play on both offense and defense."

Tiffany Hayes and Aneika Henry had been playing for Azerbaijan at the European Games, but they plan to be in uniform for this contest after the club was eliminated in the quarterfinals. That could shake up Cooper's rotation as the Dream face another squad going through ups and downs.

The Storm (3-8) knocked off Tulsa 74-69 at home Tuesday in their fourth straight game decided by five or fewer points, but they were hardly competitive in an 82-57 loss to Minnesota to start a three-game road trip.

Sue Bird and Crystal Langhorne scored 10 points apiece.

"All of these games are kind of stepping stones for us," Bird told the team's official website. "Just getting experience, seeing what it takes to be successful in this league and what it means to be ready and focused every single night. The minute you take one possession off, the game could be over."

Langhorne scored 17 points and the Storm limited McCoughtry to two points and 0 for 5 from the field in an 88-68 victory in the most recent meeting Aug. 7.

Schimmel scored 14 points off the bench in that contest.

                Mercury-Sparks Preview

Diana Taurasi and Candace Parker won't be on the floor Sunday, but there won't be any shortage of star power.

Brittney Griner's return has given the Phoenix Mercury the force in the middle they were lacking during a disappointing start. The Los Angeles Sparks began the season in even worse shape, but the addition of Kristi Toliver has provided them with a much-needed scoring threat.

Both clubs look to win a third straight contest as Phoenix visits Los Angeles.

Griner is averaging 16.7 points, 9.0 rebounds and 4.3 blocks in three games for the Mercury (5-5) after serving a seven-game suspension for a domestic violence incident involving Glory Johnson of Tulsa, who is pregnant and out for the season.

Phoenix has won its last two, including Thursday's 86-55 victory over the Shock in which Griner finished with 13 points, eight boards and seven blocks. It marked a season high in points for the Mercury, who shot 55.6 percent after hitting 59.6 percent from the field in Tuesday's 85-78 win over San Antonio.

Defending champion Phoenix is playing the season without Taurasi, who is taking a year off to rest.

''Each game we're getting in a better groove," Griner said. "Figuring out each other, coming off screens, passing the ball to me, (I am) finding them on the double, taking our time. We're starting to get more into that groove."

The Sparks feel much the same way. They began a franchise-worst 0-7 playing without Toliver and Parker, who is sitting out the first part of the season to rest.

Los Angeles has won its last two, though, beating San Antonio 86-81 on Thursday and Tulsa 98-95 on Friday.

Toliver has played the last three after being with the Slovak Republic during the EuroBasket tournament in Hungary. She scored 30 points in last Sunday's 79-70 loss to New York in her season debut and netted 15 against the Stars before delivering a franchise-record 43-point performance versus the Shock.

''I was watching every game,'' Toliver said. ''I wanted to be as big a part as I could be. I knew just from watching ways that I could come and contribute immediately. ... I knew they were going to need my scoring on a night-in, night-out basis. I was doing my homework while I was (overseas) and trying to stay engaged. When I first got here, the mentality was to be aggressive.''

Toliver went 7 of 12 from 3-point range, attempting half of her field-goal attempts from behind the arc. The task of scoring inside against Griner and the Mercury will fall to Nneka Ogwumike and Jantel Lavender.

Ogwumike scored 27 points against the Stars and had 19 and 10 boards Friday. Lavender averaged 18.4 points over her previous five before finishing with 10 against Tulsa.

Toliver had eight points and shot 3 for 11 - 0 for 6 from 3-point range - in Los Angeles' 93-68 loss to Phoenix on Aug. 24 in the last meeting. Griner finished with 21.

Tigers on longest over run since 2010

The Detroit Tigers now own the majors longest total streak since 2010 thanks their 8-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays Saturday afternoon.

Saturday's victory made it an incredible 15 consecutive overs by the Tigers, passing the mark set by the Tampa Bay Rays when they went over 14 straight games between April 26 to May 11 in 2013.

The Tigers are scoring 5.47 runs per game over the course of the streak, more than a run more than their season average of 4.42 runs per game. But what makes over bettors excited is the fact they are allowing a big 6.40 runs per game.

Over bettors riding this crazy streak hope the Tigers make it 16 in a row when they close out their series with the Blue Jays Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers will send Justin Verlander (5.09 ERA, 3-0 O/U) to the mound to take on the Blue Jays' Marco Estrada (3.58 ERA, 6-5, O/U).
