    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

    NBA comings and goings.......

-- Dwyane Wade gets $20M in a one-year deal with the Heat.

-- Phoenix gave away Danny Granger, Marcus Morris and Reggie Bullock to Detroit (for a 2nd round pick) to clear cap room to sign LaMarcus Aldridge. Good luck.

-- Monta Ellis took $44M for four years from Indiana, turning down a bigger offer from the Kings, who continue to be a laughingstock.

-- Greg Monroe chose Milwaukee over the Knicks and Lakers. Go figure.

-- Knicks signed Aaron Afflalo to a 2-year, $16M deal.

-- Golden State re-signed Draymond Greem for five years, $85M.

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here........

    13) There is a 7-footer in Greece named Georgis Papagiannis who might play college basketball in this country; if he does, his four college choices are St John's, Kentucky, NC State and out west, the Oregon Ducks.

Turns out that Nike outfits the Greek National team which helps the Ducks, seeing as outgoing Nike honcho Phil Knight is a huge supporter of Oregon.

    12) Tennessee switched from adidas to Nike this year; in the first day the new Nike Vols gear was up on their website, they sold $150K worth, all of it orange. Oy.

    11) Oakland A's are 6-20 in 1-run games, a .231 winning %age; that is the 2nd-worst winning %age is one-run games of all time. 1935 Boston Braves were 7-31 in one-run games, but they finished 38-115 that season. Oakland is currently 37-45.

    10) I'm not a picky eater, but IHOP is advertising banana pudding on its television commercials; I'd be wary of any type of pudding at IHOP.

    9) Speaking of food, saw a couple notes on Twitter today that says Marco's Pizza (located in 35 states) is the best pizza people have had. I've never heard of it; anyone have any experience with Marco's? This is worth investigating.

    8) Hazards of fantasy baseball: I'm in a 16-team keeper league, so I'm watching the Braves' new pitcher, Manny Banuelos. He strikes out Bryce Harper the first two times up so I go in and pick him up off the scrap heap- thats enough evidence for me.

35 minutes later, the trainer, manager and pitching coach are on the mound looking at my newest player. No bueno. Luckily for me, it was cramps/dehydration and not an arm injury. Still, the Atlanta announcers pointed out it wasn't that hot last night, so the heat/humidity could be an ongoing problem, if Banuelos has conditioning issues.

    7) Jerry DiPoto resigned as Angels' GM this week, loser of a power struggle with manager Mike Scioscia. More and more, we're hearing of these internal conflicts within front offices. Lot of politics; everyone wants credit when a team wins and fingers get pointed when teams do not meet expectations.

    6) Was fun finding Hamilton-Winnipeg CFL game on ESPN2 last night; after only five games this season, three CFL teams have already lost their starting QB to injury.

    5) Chargers' TE Antonio Gates gets four games for PED use. Any news at this time of year for NFL teams is generally bad news.

    4) Former UConn Husky hooper/NBA player Scott Burrell is new hoop coach at D-II Southern Connecticut; when I was in college, we used to play the Owls every year-- they weren't very good. If I remember right, gymnastics was the big sport there, but former Giant OC Kevin Gilbride used to be the football coach there

    3) It would be un-American to outlaw defensive shifts in baseball. Seriously. Why take some of the intelligence out of the game? Hitters need to adjust.

    2) Random college football note: Since 2010, Georgia Bulldogs are 0-6-1 against the spread as an underdog.

    1) July 2, 1963-- Giants 1, Braves 0 in 16 innings. Warren Spahn/Juan Marichal both went whole way. Really, they did.

Spahn faced 56 batters, Marichal 59. Willie Mays won it with a homer in the 16th. Spahn was 41 years old at the time, an amazing performance.

MLB betting cheat sheet: Too Close for Comfort in the AL East
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the weekend major-league schedule:

Too Close for Comfort in the AL East

Only one game separates the Yankees, Orioles, Blue Jays and Rays in the American League East. The Yankees host the Rays in a three game set in the Bronx this weekend, and the Rays have lost eight of 10 heading in Thursday's series finale versus Cleveland. Tampa will get a crack at some struggling Yankees starters though, as Masahiro Tanaka, C.C. Sabathia and Michael Pineda are all coming off rough outings.

              Hamilton Faces Former Team

The Angels organization gave Josh Hamilton a five year $125 million dollar contract, and he gave them very little in return. Hamilton is back home in Texas, and he was 2-for-4 in his first game off the DL against the Orioles on Tuesday. The Rangers will host the Angels in a three game series in Arlington over the weekend, and he'll have a chance to add insult to injury against his former team.

              Detroit Deadly in Day Games

The Tigers are leading the league, batting .301 with 185 runs scored in day games this season. They will be hosting the Blue Jays in a three game series at Comerica Park this weekend, with matinees on both Saturday and Sunday. The Blue Jays are the highest scoring team in the majors, so we could see some high scoring games here in Detroit.

              Pitching Notes

*Dodgers ace Clayton Kerhsaw hasn't been himself this season, and he's coming off three straight defeats. The southpaw might be able to get back on track at home against the Mets in a nationally televised game on Friday night. The Mets rank dead last in the major leagues in runs scored on the road, and they own a team batting average of .226 away from Citi Field.

*The Yankees will send C.C. Sabathia to the mound in the series finale versus Tampa Bay on Sunday, and the veteran left-hander has really struggled in the Bronx this year. He was rocked for six runs on eight hits over just 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Phillies in his last start at Yankee Stadium. Sabathia is 1-3 with an 8.49 ERA in his six home starts this season. He's also 3-7 with a 5.45 ERA in his last 12 starts versus Tampa.

              Hitting Notes

*Prince Fielder has fallen behind Jason Kipnis and Miguel Cabrera in the American League batting race, but the Texas slugger might be able to get back on top after a home series versus the Angels over the weekend. Fielder is batting .402 against the Halos in his career, and he's hitting .362 at home in Texas.

*Steven Matz was 3-for-3 with four RBIs in his major league debut, and we could see the 24 year old back in action on Sunday against the Dodgers. Matz is a left-handed pitcher for the Mets, and he's scheduled to make his second start opposite Mike Bolsinger on Sunday afternoon at Chavez Ravine.

              Totals Streak

Detroit Tigers (13-0 O/U): The Tigers have been involved in 13 straight high scoring games, and it has been a combination of hot hitting, poor defense and below average pitching. Hosting the highest scoring team in the major leagues (Toronto) this weekend, it's likely that Detroit's trend of high scoring games will continue.

              Injury Notes

*Oakland's ace Sonny Gray was hospitalized with a stomach illness, forcing him to miss his last start against the Rockies. He's scheduled to start Sunday's game against Seattle, but it's still unclear if he will be able to shake off whatever bug has been bothering him in time to face the Mariners.

*The Astros will be without slugger George Springer for at least the next six weeks, as he was hit by a pitch in Wednesday's win over Kansas City, injuring his wrist. The Astros called up Alex Presley from Triple-A Fresno to take Springer's roster spot.

Teheran playing much better at Turner Field

Julio Teheran looks to remain undefeated at the friendly confines of Turner Field Friday, with the Colombian pitcher posting a 4-0 record in seven starts at home, with the Braves going 5-2 in those games.

Teheran has posted a 2.35 ERA with opposing batters hitting a mere .173 in Atlanta.

The Braves will host the Philadelphia Philles Friday.

                Gallardo continues phenomenal pitching Thursday

Yovani Gallardo may be the hottest pitcher in the majors at the moment, with the right-hander tossing his fourth consecutive game without allowing a run Thursday. Those four games have seen the Texas Rangers go 3-1.

Since his June 15 start, Gallardo has pitched 26.1 innings while surrendering 14 hits and no runs.

Gallardo's next projected starts comes Wednesday in the middle of a three-game set with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Kazmir leads the Atheltics to another under

Under bettors rejoiced in another cashed ticket thanks to Scott Kazmir, with his Oakland Athletics going 1-6-1 over/under in his past eight contests. This comes courtesy of Kazmir pitching two-hit, no-run ball for eight innings Thursday.

In his past eight starts, Kazmir has now only allowed 11 runs.

Kazmir's next projected start comes Wednesday when the A's visit the New York Yankees.

Tigers over streak reaching ridiculous levels

With an 8-4 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates Thursday, the Detroit Tigers have gone over in 13 consecutive contests.

Those 13 games have seen the Tigers average 5.1 runs while allowing 6.7 runs per game. The combined average of 11.8 runs per game compares to the average closing total of 7.9.

The torrid over pace has the Tigers with the sixth highest over rate in the MLB with a 42-34-2 over/under record on the season to date.

The Tigers will head to Toronto for a three-game series with the Blue Jays that starts Friday.

Red Sox continue to bounce back after losing

The Boston Red Sox continue to be a hard team to develop a streak against, with the team now winning their past seven games following a loss. That trend was extended Thursday when the Bo-Sox beat-up the Blue Jays 12-6, on the back of an eight run first inning.

Those seven games have seen the Sox win by a combined 53-21, which is an average scoring margin of +4.6 runs per game.

Boston takes to the diamond again Friday when they start a three-game set with the Houston Astros at Fenway.

Royals offense sputtering during losing skid

The Kansas City Royals tied their longest losing streak of the season with a 2-0 loss to the Minnesota Twins Thursday. During the Royals four game losing skid, they've averaged a mere 1.5 runs per game and have been shutout twice.

KC will look to avoid their longest losing streak of the season Friday when they meet the Twins again.

Indians-Rays series goes over in every game

The Cleveland Indians took advantage of a hapless Tampa Bay Rays club during their four-game set, with the over hitting in every game thanks to the Tribes' offense.

With an average closing total just south of 7, the Indians averaged 6.5 runs through the series.

The Indians start a three game series with the Pirates Monday as the Rays kick off a series with the Yankees in New York.

Under cashing when Hammel takes to the mound

The Chicago Cubs have gone under in six of Jason Hammel's past seven starts. Hammel has been posted some solid numbers during those starts with the rightie only allowing 2.6 runs per game.

The Cubs host the Miami Marlins, but the total has yet to be posted.

Teams unable to score at Nationals Park

The Washington Nationals have won their past six home games thanks to their pitching and defense. Those six contests have seen the Nats opponents score a combined five runs.

The Nats have sported an average scoring margin of +4.4 runs during that span.

Washington will play host to the San Francisco Giants Friday with the Nats currently -153.

Team trying to extend longest winning streak of season

The Milwaukee Brewers exploited the hapless Philadelphia Phillies to extend their season-best winning streak to six games.

During the Brew Crew's past five they have averaged 6.6 runs per game, but have also been giving up 4.4 rpg.

Milwaukee is currently -113 when they visit Cincinnati Friday.
