    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- ESPN apparently isn't happy with their Monday Night Football schedule; they claim the NFL stiffed them because some ESPN pundits constantly rip into Roger Goodell. One of those pundits has already been let go.

-- Hyundai has a $200M, four-year advertising deal for NFL games, more than twice what the league was getting from Chevy.

-- Joey Gallo is an incredible 1 for 49 this year with two strikes on him.

-- Alabama's Kirby Smart makes $1.5M a year; he is an assistant football coach, the defensive cootdinator yet he makes $1.5M a year. Wow.

-- Bartolo Colon had his first no-decision in his last 28 starts last night.

-- Which two teams will MLB choose to play the first series in Cuba? You know it is coming soon; will the Marlins play? This will be a high profile event.

    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.........

    13) Rough week for the Tampa Bay Rays; three games in a row (and 4th time in last seven games), they haven't had a batter reach base safely in the first five innings.

    12) No NL West team had a winning record in June; Dodgers were 15-15.

    11) Mark Buehrle is 207-156 in a fabulous 16-year career; he started 28 games when he was a rookie and has started 30+ every year since. Durable, reliable, pretty soon he is going to be a borderline Hall of Famer. In that entire 15.5 years, he has had only three starts (out of 476) when he struck out 10+ batters. Teams should take notice.

    10) Adrian Gonzalez has played 156+ games the last nine years; he plays in the NL, which doesn't have the DH (he played most of one season in Boston, was DH twice). Much like Buehrle, he is reliable and dependable, a great player.

    9) Nick Saban is 183-59-1 as a college coach, but only 8-8 in bowls, losing last two- I'm saying the Crimson Tide will win their bowl game this year. Early prediction.

    8) Utah football coach Kyle Whittingham is 84-43 in ten years, 7-1 in bowl games, he is very successful, but the Utes will have their 8th different offensive coordinator in 11 years this season. That just seems weird, especially for a good team.

    7) Floyd Mayweather had a better month of May then we did; he made $220M.

    6) Bengals' WR Mohamed Sanu recently made a 60-yard FG during a workout at his alma mater, Rutgers. Some teams don't have kickers who can make a 40-yarder.

    5) They were talking on the Padres' game about what a great hitter Edgar Martinez was; he used to take batting practice with a weighted donut on his bat.

    4) San Diego wore its brown caps and throwback unis from the 80's yesterday; to me, their best uniforms were the ones Dave Winfield wore in the 70's, but as long as their color scheme went back to brown/gold, that would be a vast improvement.

    3) Hope umpire Tom Hallion is feeling better; he took a direct hit to the mask on a foul tip and had to leave the Colorado-Oakland game after two batters Wednesday.

    2) I don't care what anyone says; it is stupid to bat Jon Lester 8th. Lester has never gotten a hit, is arguably the worst hitter in MLB history. Lester has drawn one walk in his entire career-- against Guillermo Mota. He should always bat ninth.

    1) Major League Baseball wants more scoring, faster games; hard to have both.

MLB roundup: Indians' Carrasco nearly no-hits Rays

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- For the third night in a row, the Cleveland Indians took a perfect game into the sixth inning against the Tampa Bay Rays, and Carlos Carrasco lost his no-hitter with two outs in the ninth inning, settling for an 8-1 win Wednesday at Tropicana Field.

Carrasco, a 28-year-old right-hander from Venezuela, struck out 13 Rays batters and faced the minimum entering the ninth inning. He was one strike away from history when Joey Butler lined an RBI single to right field, just over the glove of leaping second baseman Jason Kipnis.

Carrasco's bid at a perfect game ended with one out in the seventh, when he walked Butler on a full count after retiring the first 19 batters in order.

Tampa Bay began the bottom of the ninth with a walk and a hit batter. A fielder's choice for the first out put runners at the corners. Carrasco struck out Kevin Kiermaier for the second out but couldn't get Butler to finish the gem.

Blue Jays 11, Red Sox 2

TORONTO -- Justin Smoak hit home runs from each side of the plate, and Mark Buehrle pitched seven strong innings as Toronto defeated Boston.

Edwin Encarnacion, Jose Bautista and Josh Donaldson also homered for the Blue Jays on Canada Day, snapping Boston's three-game winning streak. Encarnacion, Smoak and Bautista each drove in three runs and Jose Reyes had four singles.

Buehrle (9-4) held the Red Sox to four hits and one run. The left-hander struck out seven in winning his fourth straight decision over his past seven starts.

      Reds 2, Twins 1

CINCINNATI -- Johnny Cueto posted his longest outing since missing his last two starts of May with a sore right elbow as Cincinnati squeezed out a win over Minnesota in the rubber match of the three-game series.

Cueto allowed four hits and one run with one walk and eight strikeouts over eight innings. He allowed just one runner past second base while throwing 111 pitches, 74 for strikes.

Aroldis Chapman pitched the ninth for his 16th save in 17 opportunities this season. Billy Hamilton clinched the win with a diving catch to his left of pinch hitter Torii Hunter's line drive.

      A's 4, Rockies 1

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Jesse Hahn pitched six strong innings and Billy Butler and Billy Burns gave him all the offensive support he needed as Oakland topped Colorado.

Butler went 2-for-3 with his fifth career triple, drove in a run, scored once and walked. Burns went 2-for-4 with a triple and a double, scored two runs and walked once.

Colorado's Nolan Arenado went 0-for-4, snapping his 17-game hitting streak, which had been the longest active streak in the major leagues.

      Mariners 7, Padres 0

SAN DIEGO -- Robinson Cano drove in three runs with a homer, a bases-loaded single and a double and Taijuan Walker picked up his fifth straight win as he and four relievers combined on a three-hit shutout.

Nelson Cruz drove in the Mariners' final two runs with a two-run homer to cap a four-run ninth inning.

Seattle swept the two-game interleague series by outscoring San Diego 12-0 -- blanking the Padres on four hits. Cano drove in the Mariners' first two runs and Seattle added five runs in the last two innings.

      Orioles 4, Rangers 2

BALTIMORE -- J.J. Hardy hit a go-ahead two-run home run, Jimmy Paredes homered and drove in two runs, and Baltimore defeated Texas.

Orioles left-hander Wei-Yin Chen (4-4) allowed two runs on four hits over eight efficient innings, allowing the Orioles to overcome an early two-run deficit.

Shin-Soo Chu homered for the third consecutive game, and Ryan Rua also went deep, giving Texas 10 homers in the first three games of the four-game set.

      Marlins 6, Giants 5

MIAMI -- Justin Bour hit a walk-off, three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead Miami past San Francisco.

The Marlins overcame five double-play ground balls, which tied a Giants record for a nine-inning game. Miami also overcame three errors that led to two unearned runs.

San Francisco, which had 14 hits, got a tiebreaking home run from shortstop Brandon Crawford in the sixth inning. It was his 11th homer of the season. However, that big hit was wiped out when Bour pulled his shot to right field off Santiago Casilla (4-2) for his first-career walk-off home run and his eighth homer of the season.

      Brewers 9, Phillies 5

PHILADELPHIA -- Milwaukee battered Philadelphia starter Aaron Harang and never let up, scoring eight runs on 14 hits off the right-hander as he exited before he could record an out in the Brewers' two-run sixth.

Harang (4-11) became the first Phillies pitcher to lose eight consecutive starts since Jim Nash in 1972. After posting a 1.93 ERA in his first 10 starts, the 37-year-old is 0-7 with a 7.53 ERA in the last seven.

Scooter Gennett went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs, and Gerardo Parra added three hits for Milwaukee. The Brewers' Adam Lind, Ryan Braun and Aramis Ramirez drove in two runs apiece.

      Pirates 9, Tigers 3

DETROIT -- A.J. Burnett pitched seven-hit ball for seven innings and Neil Walker hit two home runs to lead Pittsburgh over Detroit.

Detroit's Joba Chamberlain gave up three solo home runs in the eighth. Walker, who hit a two-run homer in the third, bounced his sixth home run of the season off the top of the left-field wall, left fielder Starling Marte hit his 11th and designated hitter Pedro Alvarez smashed his 11th.

      Yankees 3, Angels 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Nathan Eovaldi threw 5 1/3 scoreless innings and Chasen Shreve got two big outs to help New York avoid a three-game sweep.

Chase Headley (3-for-5) and Didi Gregorius (2-for-4) each had an RBI single and Garrett Jones hit a solo homer to account for the Yankees' scoring.

The Angels scored their run on a two-out homer by Mike Trout in the eighth, his 21st home run of the year, against Justin Wilson. Dellin Betances pitched the ninth for his seventh save.

      Cubs 2, Mets 0 (11)

NEW YORK -- Starlin Castro's two-out infield single in the 11th inning snapped a scoreless tie and lifted Chicago over New York.

Castro beat out a roller to third. Miguel Montero added an RBI single two batters later.

The Cubs, who won Tuesday's series opener 1-0, have scored two runs or fewer in seven straight games. The Mets have scored two or fewer in 11 of their last 13 games.

      Braves 4, Nationals 1

ATLANTA -- Matt Wisler allowed one hit through 5 1/3 scoreless innings, and A.J. Pierzynski and Juan Uribe hit consecutive home runs as Atlanta snapped a nine-game losing streak to Washington.

Wisler (2-1) walked five and struck out six and gave up just an infield single by Danny Espinosa before leaving after 84 pitches. He also drove in a run with his first major league hit to cap the Braves' four-run, fourth-inning rally.

Washington starter Doug Fister (3-4) surrendered four of the seven hits against him in the fourth. He struck out four and walked two, one intentionally, while throwing 98 pitches over six innings.

      Astros 6, Royals 5

HOUSTON -- Jose Altuve scored the go-ahead run to cap a seventh-inning rally, and Houston beat Kansas City to complete a three-game sweep.

Without the benefit of a hit, the Astros pushed in front in the seventh, manufacturing a run after Altuve reached base to open the frame when he was hit on the right forearm by a pitch from Royals right-hander Kelvin Herrera (1-2). The second baseman stole second base, his 23rd steal on the season, and advanced to third on a ricochet groundout.

Chris Carter followed with a ground ball to third baseman Mike Moustakas that scored Altuve ahead of the tag from catcher Salvador Perez, but not without a four-plus-minute replay review after the Royals challenged the close, decisive play at the plate.

      Dodgers 4, Diamondbacks 3

PHOENIX -- Enrique Hernandez had three hits, scored twice and drove in a run, and Brett Anderson won his third consecutive start as Los Angeles edged Arizona.

Hernandez tripled and scored in the first inning, then doubled home a run and scored in a three-run third inning to give Anderson (5-4) a 4-0 lead.

Anderson gave up seven hits and one run while striking out seven in seven innings. The left-hander has allowed five earned runs with 22 strikeouts in his past 28 innings over four starts.

      White Sox 7, Cardinals 1

ST. LOUIS -- Melky Cabrera's solo homer in the top of the sixth inning snapped a tie as Chicago became the first visiting team to sweep a series in Busch Stadium this year, beating St. Louis in a thrice-delayed game.

Cabrera's third homer of the year helped make a winner of starter Jose Quintana (4-7), who gave up six hits and a run over six innings with no walks and eight strikeouts.

Tyler Flowers belted a two-run homer to key a five-run ninth, his second in as many nights. Jose Abreu added an RBI single, and Cabrera drove in another run with a groundout.

Marlins RHP Fernandez to return to mound

MIAMI -- Nearly 14 months after Tommy John surgery, Marlins right-hander Jose Fernandez is set to return to the mound on Thursday against the Giants.

Fernandez, who hasn't pitched since May 9, 2014, said he can't wait for his time to shine.

"Hopefully I can throw a first-pitch strike," he said. "Just throwing and being healthy and giving my team a chance to win -- that's all I care about."

RHP Cain to make his return to Giants

MIAMI -- Call it Comeback Thursday.

Matt Cain, who hasn't pitched since July 9, 2014, will make his return on Thursday against the Marlins.

Scherzer set to face Braves for first time since '10

ATLANTA -- During their first three series against the Washington Nationals this season, the Atlanta Braves were able to avoid Max Scherzer.

They won't be so lucky Thursday night.

Scherzer, who is 9-5 with a 1.79 ERA, will make his first start at Turner Field since 2010 as he attempts to continue the roll that is making his seven-year, $210 million contract almost seem like a bargain for the Nationals.

The right-hander followed up a one-hit shutout that featured 16 strikeouts against the Milwaukee Brewers on June 14 with a no-hitter against the Pittsburgh Pirates on June 20. Then he went eight innings for a third straight victory Friday against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Scherzer, who won the American League Cy Young Award with the Detroit Tigers in 2013, allowed five hits and two runs in the three outings, striking out 33 and walking none in 26 innings.

                  deGrom excels during day games

New York Mets righty Jacob deGrom has put together an excellent season thus far, but his numbers during day starts have been eye-opening.

The 27-year-old is 4-0 in five starts and has a 0.74 WHIP and 0.74 ERA thanks to a stingy three earned runs allowed in 36 1/3 innings of work under the sun.

For comparisons sake, deGrom is 4-5 (10 starts) with a 2.95 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in night games. Pretty solid numbers in their own right.

deGrom's last start was an afternoon outing in Milwaukee. He went eight innings, surrendered just four hits and fanned seven Brewers en route to a 2-0 Mets' win.

The Mets host the Chicago Cubs at 1:10 pm ET Thursday. deGrom is probable to get the start for the Mets (-110) while the Cubs are expected to counter with Jake Arrieta.

                  Day Starts

                  06/25 (Mets 2 at Brewers 0): 8.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 7 SO

                  06/13 (Braves 5 vs Mets 3): 7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 9 SO

                  06/07 (Mets 6 at Diamondbacks 3): 7.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 10 SO

                  05/21 (Mets 5 vs Cardinals 0): 8.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 11 SO

                  04/13 (Mets 2 vs Phillies 0): 6 1/3 IP, 7H, 0 ER, 3 SO

Indians continue to struggle with Kluber pitching

The Cleveland Indians have lost five-straight games in contests that Corey Kluber has started and have gone just 3-13 in his 16 starts in the 2015 season.

That drought has Kluber comfortably placed as the worst bet in our MLB Starter Money Standings, costing bettors $-1490 season-to-date. To put that in perspective, Francisco Liriano, the second-worst starter, is $-762. That's a difference $728.

The Indians have dropped those previous five games to the Kansas City Royals (-120), Seattle Mariners (-193), Detroit Tigers (-155), Tampa Bay Rays (-176) and Baltimore Orioles (-107).

Kluber and the Indians visit the Tampa Bay Rays Thursday. Oddsmakers have Cleveland -137 with a total of 6.5. Matt Moore is slated to get the start for the Rays.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Huge underdogs proving to cost more than they are worth
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On June 27 in South Florida against a woefully underperforming Marlins organization that had already parted ways with one manager so far this season, three-time Cy Young award winner and reigning National League MVP Clayton Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers took the field as astronomical -280 favorites against little-known 29-year-old righty Tom Koehler, who currently owns a career Major League record of 21-25.

Two hours, 26 minutes and two costly errors later, Los Angeles exited the stadium with a 3-2 defeat on its resume that currently stands as one of the biggest upsets of the 2015 season despite the fact that Kershaw surrendered just one earned run in seven solid innings of work. Those who rolled the dice on Miami that evening enjoyed a significant financial windfall while those who laid the monstrous price on the N.L. West-leading favorites suffered a serious hit to their collective bankrolls.

Backing the long shot in a seemingly one-sided baseball game—or any sport for that matter—is not a novel concept, as some gamblers relish the notion of risking a little in order to win a lot. Look no further than the Kentucky Derby, The Masters and Floyd Mayweather fights for proof of this notion. Some bettors thrive on taking a small, insignificant risk for a shot at a jackpot-like score.

But the big question here as it specifically pertains to baseball betting is whether or not such a strategy can serve as a viable, long-term approach to profitable wagering.

The answer, as I’m sure many of you could imagine, is a resounding no.

I floated this theory by my good friend Paul Bessire of the website PredictionMachine.com for some feedback as to how the 2015 Major League baseball campaign has treated bettors who routinely find themselves on the long shot side of a matchup that features a heavy favorite with the simple mission of determining whether or not there were enough significant underdog victories to turn a profit after offsetting the losses sustained when the favorites came through.

Here are the results for the 2015 season through Tuesday night’s games:

MLB underdogs from +160 to +169 (based on a $100 bettor)

                    Overall: 35-67 (34.3% SU), -$850
                    Home: 6-11 (35.3% SU), -$150
                    Road: 29-56 (34.1% SU), -$700

MLB underdogs from +170 to +179 (based on a $100 bettor)

                    Overall: 18-49 (26.9% SU), -$1,700
                    Home: 5-8 (38.5% SU), +$100
                    Road: 13-41 (24.1% SU), -$1,800

MLB underdogs from +180 and upward (based on a $100 bettor)

                    Overall: 10-29 (25.6% SU), -$1,075
                    Home: 3-5 (37.5% SU), +$50
                    Road: 7-24 (22.6% SU), -$1,125

As you can tell from the above information, blindly backing MLB underdogs of +160 or higher has produced disastrous results for gamblers during the 2015 season. Essentially, for every time a relative unknown like Tom Koehler upsets a future Hall of Famer like Clayton Kershaw, there are 2.2 matchups where the heavy favorite seals the deal. This type of strategy isn’t just a losing proposition, but it’s a bankroll-decimating approach capable of busting bettors prior to the July All-Star break.

However, it’s imperative to note at this point that we aren’t advocating the opposite approach to this strategy, which involves blindly betting on heavy favorites who face an opponent lined at +160 or higher. Trust us when we say that if gambling were that easy, all the casinos in Las Vegas would cease to exist.

Look no further than the Los Angeles Dodgers for proof, as Kershaw has lost each of his last two starts (-280 and -180) while fellow ace Zack Grienke was defeated at Miami on June 28 as a -215 favorite.

The lesson, as always, is that gamblers have to put in the requisite amount of time and research while looking to isolate the most favorable of spots when it comes to the Major League Baseball calendar. Rarely does a tell-all trend emerge that provides an opportunity to sprint to the counter while blindly following the logic.

And even when such a trend does rear its profitable little head, you can surely bet the bookmakers will be hot on its tail.

                      Thursday, July 2

This pitcher has dominated his next opponent

The Kansas City Royals will start Chris Young when they host the Twins Thursday, which does not spell good things for Minnesota. In two appearances against the Twins this year (one start), Young has posted a 2-0 record with a 1.59 ERA with Minny only hitting .083.

Since taking a place in the rotation Young has made nine starts and has allowed one or fewer runs five times.

Over wagers hot when this umpire is behind the dish

Over bets have gone 5-0 in the last five ball games that umpire Tripp Gibson has worked behind home plate. Gibson will be calling pitches in Philadelphia when the Phillies host the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday evening.

Furthermore, seven of the last 10 ball games that Gibson has worked behind home plate have resulted in scorelines eclipsing the total.

The recent run of Overs has Gibson's at just 8-7 Over/Under on the season.

Matt Garza is probable to get the ball for the Brew Crew with Chad Billingsley expected to start for the home team. Oddsmakers opened the total at 8.5, but that has since come down to 8.

Over streak continues in Tigers matchups

Over bets have cashed in 12 consecutive Detroit Tigers games heading into their meeting with the Pittsburgh Pirates Thursday afternoon.

The hot streak of scorelines going over the number has moved the Tigers up to sixth in the big leagues in the Over/Under standings. Detroit is now 41-34-2 season-to-date.

Oddsmakers have posted a total of 8 for Tuesday's clash with the Pirates. Kyle Ryan is probable to start for the Tigers, while Francisco Liriano is expected to get the start for the Buccos.

Can this pitcher continue his under trend?

Scott Kazmir has been showing some good junk on the mound lately which has seen the under cash in five of his past seven starts. In those seven games, 1-5-1 over/under, Kazmir has allowed a mere 11 runs.

The lefties numbers get even better at home, with the under hitting in each of Kazmir's past four starts in Oakland. Kazmir has allowed a mere four runs in his past four home appearances while twice holding his opponent scoreless.

The total is currently set at 7 when the A's host the Mariners Thursday.

Red Sox are showing great bounce-back ability

The Boston Red Sox have won their past six games following a loss. The Bo-Sox offense has surged in those contests with an average scoring margin of +4.3 runs per game.

The Red Sox are coming off a loss to the Blue Jays Wednesday when their pitchers were bashed for five home runs.

The Sox are currently +143 when they face the Jays Thursday.

Gallardo has been out-of-his mind lately

Yovani Gallardo is coming off one of his best months as a pitcher, with the right-hander going 2-0 with a 0.54 ERA in five starts in June. Those five starts have seen Gallardo surrender a mere two runs.

The Texas Rangers have managed to mess up Gallardo's play, going just 3-2 in his past five starts with the bullpen surrendering eight runs.

The Rangers are currently +108 when they visit Camden Yards Thursday.
