Over streak continues in Tigers matchups

Over bets have cashed in 12 consecutive Detroit Tigers games heading into their meeting with the Pittsburgh Pirates Thursday afternoon.

The hot streak of scorelines going over the number has moved the Tigers up to sixth in the big leagues in the Over/Under standings. Detroit is now 41-34-2 season-to-date.

Oddsmakers have posted a total of 8 for Tuesday's clash with the Pirates. Kyle Ryan is probable to start for the Tigers, while Francisco Liriano is expected to get the start for the Buccos.

This pitcher has dominated his next opponent

The Kansas City Royals will start Chris Young when they host the Twins Thursday, which does not spell good things for Minnesota. In two appearances against the Twins this year (one start), Young has posted a 2-0 record with a 1.59 ERA with Minny only hitting .083.

Since taking a place in the rotation Young has made nine starts and has allowed one or fewer runs five times.

Dodgers plan to split Kershaw, Greinke in rotation

PHOENIX -- The Arizona Dodgers rode twin aces Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke to first place in the National League West, but manager Don Mattingly said he plans to split the two after the All-Star break.

In fact, the move is mostly about splitting up back-end starters Mike Bolsinger and Carlos Frias.

Kershaw and Greinke, who have pitched back-to-back all season, are averaging a tad more than 6 2/3 innings per start. Greinke leads the majors with 15 quality starts, and Kershaw is tied for second with 13. When they pitch, the bullpen is seldom taxed.

However, No. 3 starter Brett Anderson, Bolsinger and Frias are averaging about 5 2/3 innings per start, and the extra work makes a big impact on the bullpen, Mattingly believes, especially when it is concentrated.

"Really, what has been happening to us is that when Clayton and Zack pitch, they get you deeper into the game," Mattingly said. "Then we have the two guys right together there that you are using (relievers) basically four innings every time. So if it we can spread those guys out a little bit, then we have rest in between days."

Because of the length provided by Kershaw and Greinke, Dodgers relievers have thrown only 223 innings this season, 12th in the league, and they have the fifth-best ERA at 3.27. The imbalance is what concerns Mattingly.

"It's the back to back with our bullpen that gets us in trouble," Mattingly said. "Then we need a couple of days to recover. We've have outings where Brett, we've just had to let him go. We don't want to have to do that. The same with Clayton and Zack. We want to protect everybody. It really just allows you to balance your innings a little more."

With two No. 1s, Mattingly must choose whether three-time Cy Young winner Kershaw or NL ERA leader Greinke will start against Washington on July 17, the first game after the All-Star break. The other likely will start the third game of the series July 19.

The All-Star Game will play into his decision. Greinke, 6-2 with a 1.58 ERA, would be the mathematician's choice to start for the National League on July 14, which would could lead to Opening Day starter Kershaw working the first game after the break.

"With those days off, we can kind of manipulate the rotation a little bit and see what happens with Clayton and Zack (in the All-Star Game)," Mattingly said.

Mets, Cuddyer receive good news on sore knee

NEW YORK -- At least the New York Mets deviated from the usual script before the game Wednesday, if not during it.

Hours before producing yet another anemic offensive performance in a 2-0, 11-inning loss to the Chicago Cubs at Citi Field, the Mets got a rare bit of injury-related good news when left fielder Michael Cuddyer underwent an MRI that revealed no serious damage to his sore left knee.

Cuddyer exited in the sixth inning of Tuesday's 1-0 loss to the Cubs after the soreness, which he felt in his first at-bat, grew more intense as the game went on. Cuddyer said he was concerned Tuesday night, as was manager Terry Collins, who is accustomed to Cuddyer not saying much at all about the aches and pains every player endures.

"I was real concerned when it happened, because he never says 'boo' -- I mean, this guy never says a word about anything at all," Collins said Wednesday afternoon. "(Trainer) Ray Ramirez called me down and (Cuddyer) had trouble bending his knee. I was nervous."

Cuddyer was unavailable Wednesday but could be an option on Thursday. That provided some relief for Collins, who needs even a struggling Cuddyer -- he has two hits in his last 28 at-bats -- to lengthen a lineup that has been wrecked by injuries this season.

The Mets' three best offensive players -- third baseman David Wright, catcher Travis d'Arnaud and second baseman Daniel Murphy -- have combined to miss 151 out of a possible 234 games this season.

"Finally, some good news," Collins said. "A bright spot instead of, you know, another guy on the 15-day (disabled list)."

Indians continue to struggle with Kluber pitching

The Cleveland Indians have lost five-straight games in contests that Corey Kluber has started and have gone just 3-13 in his 16 starts in the 2015 season.

That drought has Kluber comfortably placed as the worst bet in our MLB Starter Money Standings, costing bettors $-1490 season-to-date. To put that in perspective, Francisco Liriano, the second-worst starter, is $-762. That's a difference $728.

The Indians have dropped those previous five games to the Kansas City Royals (-120), Seattle Mariners (-193), Detroit Tigers (-155), Tampa Bay Rays (-176) and Baltimore Orioles (-107).

Kluber and the Indians visit the Tampa Bay Rays Thursday. Oddsmakers have Cleveland -137 with a total of 6.5. Matt Moore is slated to get the start for the Rays.

Marlins RHP Fernandez to return to mound

              Jul 02, 2015

MIAMI -- Nearly 14 months after Tommy John surgery, Marlins right-hander Jose Fernandez is set to return to the mound on Thursday against the Giants.

Fernandez, who hasn't pitched since May 9, 2014, said he can't wait for his time to shine.

"Hopefully I can throw a first-pitch strike," he said. "Just throwing and being healthy and giving my team a chance to win -- that's all I care about."

The bigger question is this: Will it be the old Fernandez, the dynamic ace who captivated baseball with his fastball, his charisma and his brash self-confidence?

Or will Marlins fans have to settle for a diminished version of Fernandez?

Perhaps medical history has some answers.

A 2014 study by the American Journal of Sports Medicine showed that of 147 pitchers who had Tommy John surgery from 1999 to July of 2011, their collective ERAs went up from 4.23 before their operations to 4.67 after.

Fastball velocity for those pitchers went down, from 91.2 mph to 90.8.

The study also showed that 57 percent of pitchers who had Tommy John surgery at some point returned to the disabled list due to an arm injury.

For Marlins looking positives, here are a few:

Twenty percent of the players who had Tommy John surgery never pitched again, so Fernandez is happy to return.

Anibal Sanchez, David Wells and John Smoltz finished in the top four in Cy Young balloting after having the surgery performed.

No matter what, the Marlins, who rank 10th in the National League with a 4.17 rotation ERA, are happy to have Fernandez back.

Fernandez struck out 34 batters in 24 2/3 innings during his rehab outings, but Thursday will be the first true test.

RHP Cain to make his return to Giants

                Jul 02, 2015

MIAMI -- Call it Comeback Thursday.

Matt Cain, who hasn't pitched since July 9, 2014, will make his return on Thursday against the Marlins.

Also in the game, the Marlins will start right-hander Jose Fernandez, who hasn't pitched since May 9, 2014 due to Tommy John surgery.

Cain, who was an All-Star three times from 2009 to 2012, was bothered by bone chips in his elbow much of last year. He finally had surgery on Aug. 11 and later had an operation to remove a bone spur from his right ankle.

This year, Cain was slowed by a strained flexor tendon in his right arm.

"It's been a long road back -- longer than I thought it would be," Cain said. "But it's worth it."

Cain was limited to 15 starts last year and produced just a 2-7 record and a 4.18 ERA.

This year, in four rehab outings, Cain had a 4.19 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings.

If he is healthy, Cain commands his fastball on either side of the plate, ranging from 89 to 93 mph. He has solid off-speed stuff, which keeps batters from sitting on his fastball.

"I've missed pitching," Cain said. "When you have (the game) taken away from you for a while, you learn to appreciate it more."

Scherzer set to face Braves for first time since '10

                  Jul 01, 2015

ATLANTA -- During their first three series against the Washington Nationals this season, the Atlanta Braves were able to avoid Max Scherzer.

They won't be so lucky Thursday night.

Scherzer, who is 9-5 with a 1.79 ERA, will make his first start at Turner Field since 2010 as he attempts to continue the roll that is making his seven-year, $210 million contract almost seem like a bargain for the Nationals.

The right-hander followed up a one-hit shutout that featured 16 strikeouts against the Milwaukee Brewers on June 14 with a no-hitter against the Pittsburgh Pirates on June 20. Then he went eight innings for a third straight victory Friday against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Scherzer, who won the American League Cy Young Award with the Detroit Tigers in 2013, allowed five hits and two runs in the three outings, striking out 33 and walking none in 26 innings.

He was perfect at least into the sixth inning in each game and went 16 innings without allowing a hit during the stretch.

Scherzer seemed to be most impressed by going three games without issuing a walk.

"That's what you pride yourself in," he said about being able to continuously attack the zone.

The victory at Philadelphia was the 100th of Scherzer's career. He had a 2.90 ERA when he went 21-3 for the Tigers two years ago. This season, he is more than a run better than that.

Scherzer has faced the Braves only six times, all except one while with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He is 1-2 with a 4.13 ERA, getting a no-decision in Atlanta for Detroit in 2010.

DeGrom's number during day starts are ridiculous

Jacob deGrom has started five day games for the New York Mets, with the youngster going 4-0 with a 0.74 ERA. To make those numbers even more staggering, deGrom has 40 K's to just five walks in those starts.

To add to those numbers, deGrom has a 5-1 record with a 1.33 ERA when pitching at Citi Field as he will Thursday.

The Mets host the Chicago Cubs Thursday.

MLB roundup: Indians' Carrasco nearly no-hits Rays

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- For the third night in a row, the Cleveland Indians took a perfect game into the sixth inning against the Tampa Bay Rays, and Carlos Carrasco lost his no-hitter with two outs in the ninth inning, settling for an 8-1 win Wednesday at Tropicana Field.

Carrasco, a 28-year-old right-hander from Venezuela, struck out 13 Rays batters and faced the minimum entering the ninth inning. He was one strike away from history when Joey Butler lined an RBI single to right field, just over the glove of leaping second baseman Jason Kipnis.

Carrasco's bid at a perfect game ended with one out in the seventh, when he walked Butler on a full count after retiring the first 19 batters in order.

Tampa Bay began the bottom of the ninth with a walk and a hit batter. A fielder's choice for the first out put runners at the corners. Carrasco struck out Kevin Kiermaier for the second out but couldn't get Butler to finish the gem.

Blue Jays 11, Red Sox 2

TORONTO -- Justin Smoak hit home runs from each side of the plate, and Mark Buehrle pitched seven strong innings as Toronto defeated Boston.

Edwin Encarnacion, Jose Bautista and Josh Donaldson also homered for the Blue Jays on Canada Day, snapping Boston's three-game winning streak. Encarnacion, Smoak and Bautista each drove in three runs and Jose Reyes had four singles.

Buehrle (9-4) held the Red Sox to four hits and one run. The left-hander struck out seven in winning his fourth straight decision over his past seven starts.

                        Reds 2, Twins 1

CINCINNATI -- Johnny Cueto posted his longest outing since missing his last two starts of May with a sore right elbow as Cincinnati squeezed out a win over Minnesota in the rubber match of the three-game series.

Cueto allowed four hits and one run with one walk and eight strikeouts over eight innings. He allowed just one runner past second base while throwing 111 pitches, 74 for strikes.

Aroldis Chapman pitched the ninth for his 16th save in 17 opportunities this season. Billy Hamilton clinched the win with a diving catch to his left of pinch hitter Torii Hunter's line drive.

                        A's 4, Rockies 1

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Jesse Hahn pitched six strong innings and Billy Butler and Billy Burns gave him all the offensive support he needed as Oakland topped Colorado.

Butler went 2-for-3 with his fifth career triple, drove in a run, scored once and walked. Burns went 2-for-4 with a triple and a double, scored two runs and walked once.

Colorado's Nolan Arenado went 0-for-4, snapping his 17-game hitting streak, which had been the longest active streak in the major leagues.

                        Mariners 7, Padres 0

SAN DIEGO -- Robinson Cano drove in three runs with a homer, a bases-loaded single and a double and Taijuan Walker picked up his fifth straight win as he and four relievers combined on a three-hit shutout.

Nelson Cruz drove in the Mariners' final two runs with a two-run homer to cap a four-run ninth inning.

Seattle swept the two-game interleague series by outscoring San Diego 12-0 -- blanking the Padres on four hits. Cano drove in the Mariners' first two runs and Seattle added five runs in the last two innings.

                        Orioles 4, Rangers 2

BALTIMORE -- J.J. Hardy hit a go-ahead two-run home run, Jimmy Paredes homered and drove in two runs, and Baltimore defeated Texas.

Orioles left-hander Wei-Yin Chen (4-4) allowed two runs on four hits over eight efficient innings, allowing the Orioles to overcome an early two-run deficit.

Shin-Soo Chu homered for the third consecutive game, and Ryan Rua also went deep, giving Texas 10 homers in the first three games of the four-game set.

                        Marlins 6, Giants 5

MIAMI -- Justin Bour hit a walk-off, three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead Miami past San Francisco.

The Marlins overcame five double-play ground balls, which tied a Giants record for a nine-inning game. Miami also overcame three errors that led to two unearned runs.

San Francisco, which had 14 hits, got a tiebreaking home run from shortstop Brandon Crawford in the sixth inning. It was his 11th homer of the season. However, that big hit was wiped out when Bour pulled his shot to right field off Santiago Casilla (4-2) for his first-career walk-off home run and his eighth homer of the season.

                        Brewers 9, Phillies 5

PHILADELPHIA -- Milwaukee battered Philadelphia starter Aaron Harang and never let up, scoring eight runs on 14 hits off the right-hander as he exited before he could record an out in the Brewers' two-run sixth.

Harang (4-11) became the first Phillies pitcher to lose eight consecutive starts since Jim Nash in 1972. After posting a 1.93 ERA in his first 10 starts, the 37-year-old is 0-7 with a 7.53 ERA in the last seven.

Scooter Gennett went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs, and Gerardo Parra added three hits for Milwaukee. The Brewers' Adam Lind, Ryan Braun and Aramis Ramirez drove in two runs apiece.

                        Pirates 9, Tigers 3

DETROIT -- A.J. Burnett pitched seven-hit ball for seven innings and Neil Walker hit two home runs to lead Pittsburgh over Detroit.

Detroit's Joba Chamberlain gave up three solo home runs in the eighth. Walker, who hit a two-run homer in the third, bounced his sixth home run of the season off the top of the left-field wall, left fielder Starling Marte hit his 11th and designated hitter Pedro Alvarez smashed his 11th.

                        Yankees 3, Angels 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Nathan Eovaldi threw 5 1/3 scoreless innings and Chasen Shreve got two big outs to help New York avoid a three-game sweep.

Chase Headley (3-for-5) and Didi Gregorius (2-for-4) each had an RBI single and Garrett Jones hit a solo homer to account for the Yankees' scoring.

The Angels scored their run on a two-out homer by Mike Trout in the eighth, his 21st home run of the year, against Justin Wilson. Dellin Betances pitched the ninth for his seventh save.

                        Cubs 2, Mets 0 (11)

NEW YORK -- Starlin Castro's two-out infield single in the 11th inning snapped a scoreless tie and lifted Chicago over New York.

Castro beat out a roller to third. Miguel Montero added an RBI single two batters later.

The Cubs, who won Tuesday's series opener 1-0, have scored two runs or fewer in seven straight games. The Mets have scored two or fewer in 11 of their last 13 games.

                        Braves 4, Nationals 1

ATLANTA -- Matt Wisler allowed one hit through 5 1/3 scoreless innings, and A.J. Pierzynski and Juan Uribe hit consecutive home runs as Atlanta snapped a nine-game losing streak to Washington.

Wisler (2-1) walked five and struck out six and gave up just an infield single by Danny Espinosa before leaving after 84 pitches. He also drove in a run with his first major league hit to cap the Braves' four-run, fourth-inning rally.

Washington starter Doug Fister (3-4) surrendered four of the seven hits against him in the fourth. He struck out four and walked two, one intentionally, while throwing 98 pitches over six innings.

                        Astros 6, Royals 5

HOUSTON -- Jose Altuve scored the go-ahead run to cap a seventh-inning rally, and Houston beat Kansas City to complete a three-game sweep.

Without the benefit of a hit, the Astros pushed in front in the seventh, manufacturing a run after Altuve reached base to open the frame when he was hit on the right forearm by a pitch from Royals right-hander Kelvin Herrera (1-2). The second baseman stole second base, his 23rd steal on the season, and advanced to third on a ricochet groundout.

Chris Carter followed with a ground ball to third baseman Mike Moustakas that scored Altuve ahead of the tag from catcher Salvador Perez, but not without a four-plus-minute replay review after the Royals challenged the close, decisive play at the plate.

                        Dodgers 4, Diamondbacks 3

PHOENIX -- Enrique Hernandez had three hits, scored twice and drove in a run, and Brett Anderson won his third consecutive start as Los Angeles edged Arizona.

Hernandez tripled and scored in the first inning, then doubled home a run and scored in a three-run third inning to give Anderson (5-4) a 4-0 lead.
