    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

More odds an various college football games this season.......

-- Sept 5: Alabama (-9) over Wisconsin in Arlington, TX

-- Sept 5: Auburn (-11.5) over Louisville in Atlanta

-- Sept 12: Oregon at Michigan State (-1)

    -- Sept 25: Boise State (-9) @ Virginia

    -- October 3: Notre Dame @ Clemson (-2.5)

-- October 10: Oklahoma (-7.5) vs Texas in Dallas

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

    13) Bo Ryan is stepping down as basketball coach at Wisconsin after this coming season, a move obviously timed to improve the odds of his long-time assistant Greg Gard inheriting the job. The 67-year old Ryan says his retirement isn't health-related.

    12) All of which leaves Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez (a football guy) with a very hard job; replace a guy who was Wisconsin basketball for the last 14 years. Ryan won four Big Ten (or Big 12 or Big 14) titles at Wisconsin, which had not won any in the 55 years before Ryan got to Madison. He will be almost impossible to replace.

    11) Here is a list of six guys Buckys5thquarter.com drew up who are possible replacements for Ryan; well, their list is five and Greg Gard is #6, because Ryan wants him to get the job. I do not think he has a chance in hell of landing it. Big 14 basketball is not an entry level head coaching position, it just isn't.

-- Tony Bennett, Virginia-- His dad was Wisconsin's coach before Ryan. He is 60-11 at Virginia the last two years.
-- Shaka Smart, Texas-- Was born in Madison, but this ain't happening.
-- Saul Phillips, Ohio U-- Followed Tim Miles at North Dakota State and won big there, but would be a hard sell after going 10-20 in his first year at Ohio.
-- Linc Darner, Wisc-Green Bay-- Just got hired at Green Bay; he went 90-12 in his last three years at D-II Florida Southern.
-- Pat Miller, Wisc-Whitewater-- Is 315-87 at the lower levels of college hoop, where Ryan won four national titles himself.
-- Greg Gard, Wisconsin assistant coach.

Two greedy bastard updates for today.........
    10) Out in Oakland, they're selling a commemorative basketball celebrating Golden State's NBA championship; they're only charging $89.95 for it. Oy.

    9) At the Mobil station closest to my house, gas went up from $2.89 a gallon to $3.09 in one day couple of weeks ago, then Saturday, it suddenly went back down to $2.91 a gallon, for two glorious days. Monday? With 4th of July weekend coming up, gas went back up to $3.09 a gallon. How do they get away with this?

    8) Back in Oakland for a minute, they announced a crowd of 12,125 for the Rockies' game with A's last night-- no way were there 10,000 people there. Not close. Too bad, Kendall Graveman pitched really well and the A's won 7-1.

    7) Nice moment before the game; Julianna Zobrist sang the national anthem; she is Ben Zobrist's wife, and a professional singer. I think her knees are healthy too, which is more than her husband can say. He is playing hurt this season.

    6) Phillies finally did something, hiring Andy MacPhail to take over from 77-year old Pat Gillick as team president, but not until after this season. MacPhail is going to observe the rest of the season, then hopefully hire a very large moving van to get rid of all the washed up/substandard players the Phillies have. They should've cleaned house 3-4 years ago, but never did; now it'll be an immense rebuilding project.

    5) Something is wrong with the Dodgers; they lost in Arizona last night, blowing a 4-0 lead- they've scored a total of 11 runs in Zach Greinke's last eight starts that were not in Denver. LA is 43-35, a half-game ahead of the Giants in the NL West. For a club with the biggest payroll ever, you expected a little more.

    4) St Louis is 13-3 in its last sixteen games, they're very good, very solid, but it is just weird that they haven't scored a first inning run in their last 22 games.

    3) San Francisco Giants are 8-4 in first game of a road series, but only 5-8 in first game of a home series- they lost their last five home series openers.

    2) Random college football stat: USC is 4-13 against spread in its last 17 road games.

    1) Lebron James is probably going to re-sign with Cleveland, but could you imagine if he ever signed with the Knicks; the entire Interweb would implode. Twitter would definitely crash for a while, SportsCenter would do six-hour specials on it, Spike Lee would do a movie before training camp started- thank the Lord it ain't gonna happen.

See spot. See spot bet: This week's best spot bet opportunities

      Letdown spot

Before you set off the Fourth of July fireworks this weekend, America’s neighbors to the north celebrate their country on Wednesday, July 1, better known as "Canada Day". And few things are more Canadian than enjoying the holiday with a cold 5 percent beer and flicking on the Blue Jays game – or catching Canada's team live in action at the Rogers Centre. The Canada Day game is always a big deal for the club, with a packed house and tons of festivities at the ballpark (when playing at home) as well as knowing a good chunk of the country is tuning in.

So that leaves Toronto open for a big letdown the following day – July 2. The Blue Jays have struggled with the letdown spot following the holiday for the past 15 years. Going back to 2000, Toronto is just 4-10 on July 2 (didn’t play on that date in 2009) and has allowed an average of almost 5.8 runs in those contests, leading to an 8-5-1 Over/Under mark in those games. The Jays host the rival Red Sox, who always draw a big crowd in T.O., for four games starting Monday, including the July 1 and July 2 contests.

      Schedule spot

The Atlanta Falcons have high hopes for new head coach Dan Quinn, the architect of the Seattle Seahawks’ dominating defense the last two seasons. Quinn, who signed a five-year deal with Atlanta this February, has inside info on the Falcons’ Week 9 opponents: the San Francisco 49ers. During his tenure in the NFC West, Quinn would have missed plenty of sleep game planning for San Francisco and won’t have any trouble kicking this old foe while their suffering through what is expected to be a down year in the Bay Area.

That Week 9 matchup at Levi’s Stadium is especially tough for the Niners, playing at St. Louis in Week 8 and looking ahead to a bye in Week 10 and road matchup with Quinn’s old club, Seattle, in Week 11. Oddsmakers opened with San Francisco as a 6-point home favorite in this matchup but there's solid value with a well-informed road side – even more so if this game is hovering around a touchdown.

      Lookahead spot

The New York Mets are currently enjoying the tail end of a six-game home stand, hosting the Chicago Cubs at Citi Field for three games. New York has been night-and-day when it comes to venue, boasting a 29-11 home record and an 11-26 road mark. The Mets are up just 0.67 units on the season, thanks in large part to their -15.14-unit deficit away from Flushing.

New York faces a big road trip Thursday, crossing the country to play the Los Angeles Dodgers for three games before making their way to face the defending World Series winners, the San Francisco Giants, for three contests. The Mets could get caught looking ahead to the long haul to the left side of the country in Thursday’s finale with the Cubs. Last season, New York made a similar Western run – taking on Oakland and L.A. – and dropped the finale of a four-game home set against Chicago on 4-1 on August 8 before leaving town.

Tigers' Over streak has reached double-digits

The Detroit Tigers continue to reward Over bettors in a big way, as the club has gone above the closing total in 10-straight games ahead of Tuesday's meeting with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Justin Verlander is the probable starter for the Tigers, while Gerrit Cole is slated to counter for the Bucs.

As of this writing, the total for the game was off the board.

Hamilton expects to start for Rangers on Tuesday

BALTIMORE -- Josh Hamilton is ready to rejoin the Texas Rangers.

The veteran outfielder, on the disabled list since June 4 with a left hamstring strain, was with the team Monday at Camden Yards and had every intention of being in the lineup for the series opener against the Baltimore Orioles.

The team's trainers, however, decided it would be prudent to give Hamilton an extra day of rest and hopefully get him back in the lineup Tuesday. It turned out the Rangers were just fine without him, as the offense finally awoke in an 8-1 victory over Baltimore.

MLB roundup: Indians rookie dominates Rays

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Cleveland rookie right-hander Cody Anderson took a perfect game into the seventh inning, and the Indians beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-1 with a combined three-hitter Monday at Tropicana Field.

Anderson (1-0) earned his first major league victory by throwing eight innings of two-hit, one-run ball. The 24-year-old, who dominated Tampa Bay in his debut June 21, retired the first 19 batters in order before designated hitter Grady Sizemore -- in just his second game with the Rays -- hit a solo home run to right field in the seventh inning.

Anderson struck out two and didn't walk a batter.

Jason Kipnis, Michael Brantley and Yan Gomes each had three hits for Cleveland, including a homer by Gomes.

Red Sox 3, Blue Jays 1

TORONTO -- Clay Buchholz pitched eight strong innings, and Xander Bogaerts drove in two runs as Boston defeated Toronto.

Buchholz (6-6) allowed five hits, no walks and one run while striking out five to earn his fourth win in a row over six starts. Koji Uehara pitched the ninth to earn his 17th save of the season.

By winning the opener of the four-game series, Buchholz improved his career record at Rogers Centre to 10-3. He entered the game with a 2.30 earned-run average in 14 starts there.

            Rangers 8, Orioles 1

BALTIMORE -- Mitch Moreland hit two of Texas' four home runs, and the Rangers cooled down Baltimore.

Carlos Corporan and Shin-Soo Choo also went deep for Texas, which tied a season high for homers in a game. The Rangers snapped Baltimore's four-game winning streak.

Staked with an early lead, Wandy Rodriguez (5-3) kept the Orioles off balance for most of his outing. The left-hander allowed one run on eight hits with two walks and seven strikeouts over five-plus innings.

            Brewers 7, Phillies 4

PHILADELPHIA -- In a clash of the two worst teams in the major leagues, Milwaukee took the opener of a four-game series against Philadelphia.

The Brewers erased a 4-1 deficit by slugging a season-high-tying 16 hits en route to their fifth win in seven games. The Phillies scored early but went silent to slip to 24 games below .500, tying their season-worst mark.

Jonathan Lucroy led the Milwaukee surge, going 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs, while Ryan Braun went 3-for-5 with an RBI.

            Reds 11, Twins 7

CINCINNATI -- Billy Hamilton reached base four times, recorded four steals to reach 40 for the season, and scored three times, sparking Cincinnati to a victory over Minnesota.

Brian Dozier homered for Minnesota, which trailed 9-1 after three innings but scored six times in the fourth to get within two.

Reds relievers Nate Adcock, Manny Parra and Aroldis Chapman combined for five scoreless innings to stave off the Twins' comeback attempt. Adcock (1-0) earned his first National League win and first major league victory since 2011.

            Astros 6, Royals 1

HOUSTON -- Lance McCullers capped a stellar month with seven strong innings, and Houston added to its major-league-leading total of multi-homer games in a victory over Kansas.

McCullers (4-2) gave up one run on four hits and two walks while recording six strikeouts, retiring 11 of 12 batters during one key stretch. He closed June with a 2.11 ERA, the lowest ERA in June by an Astros rookie since right-hander Darryl Kyle posted a 1.80 ERA in 1990.

Jose Altuve and Chris Carter homered for Houston.

            A's 7, Rockies 1

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Josh Reddick, Ike Davis and Billy Butler homered, and rookie Kendall Graveman threw seven shutout innings, leading Oakland past Colorado.

The A's were homerless in their previous four games before erupting for three home runs against Colorado and ending their three-game losing streak.

Reddick and Davis hit two-run blasts in the first inning, and Butler added a solo shot in the fourth. Butler also doubled and finished with three hits, three runs and two RBIs. Davis added a double, and Stephen Vogt had two hits and scored a run.

            Angels 4, Yankees 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Mike Trout homered, stole a base and made a couple of highlight-reel catches in center field to lead Los Angeles to a win over New York.

C.J. Wilson (6-6) went six strong innings to get the win, giving up one run and five hits, then getting stellar support from the bullpen. Trevor Gott (seventh inning), Joe Smith (eighth) and Huston Street (ninth, 22nd save) finished off the Yankees over the final three frames.

Trout homered (No. 20) in the third inning off CC Sabathia (3-8), then saved at least one run with a running catch in left-center off a drive hit by Chris Young in the fifth. He made another running catch on Chase Headley's drive to right-center in the sixth.

            Diamondbacks 10, Dodgers 6

PHOENIX -- Welington Castillo doubled home the tiebreaking run, and Paul Goldschmidt added a two-run single in a four-run eighth inning as Arizona rallied to beat Los Angeles.

Nick Ahmed and Yasmany Tomas hit two-run homers for the Diamondbacks, who scored 10 runs in the final four innings to overcome a 4-0 deficit. Arizona managed only three singles off Los Angeles starter Mike Bolsinger, who left for a pinch hitter in the fifth inning after experiencing flu-like symptoms.

Jake Lamb drew a walk from right-hander Pedro Baez (1-1) to open the eighth inning before Castillo doubled for a 7-6 lead. Castillo scored on a throwing error by Baez after Chris Owings' bunt single, and Goldschmidt finished the inning with a two-run single.

Game of the Day: Pirates at Tigers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Pirates at Detroit Tigers (+109, OFF)

Gerrit Cole makes his second attempt to become the first 12-game winner in the majors when the Pittsburgh Pirates visit the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series. Cole will lock up with Detroit's Justin Verlander, who will be making only his third start of the season after skipping his last turn due to back stiffness.

Despite owning one of the best records in baseball, Pittsburgh is already staring at a wild card after falling nine games behind first-place St. Louis in the National League Central. The Pirates have lost six of nine after dropping a 2-1 decision in Sunday's series finale to visiting Atlanta. The Tigers enter the series off a dramatic victory, rallying from a four-run deficit in the eighth inning before prevailing on rookie James McCann's walk-off homer against the Chicago White Sox. Detroit won two of three at Pittsburgh in April, with the one loss coming against Cole, who is 6-1 in eight interleague starts.

              LINE HISTORY:
Sportsbooks opened the Tigers +109, which is where the line was sitting at the time of writing.

              INJURY REPORT:
              Pittsburgh - C. Hart (15-day DL), A. Lambo (60-day DL), J. Sellers (60-day DL), B. Cumpton (out for season). Detroit - J. Verlander (Probable), K. Lobstein (15-day DL), A. Avila (15-day DL), J. Nathan (out for season).

              WEATHER FORECAST:
There is currently a 24 percent chance of precipitation at game time. The forecast is calling for temperatures of 76 degrees Fahrenheit in the Pittsburgh area.

              PITCHING MATCHUP:
Pirates RH Gerrit Cole (11-3, 2.16 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Justin Verlander (0-1, 6.17)

Cole had his six-start winning streak halted in abrupt fashion, giving up four first-inning runs and lasting a season-low 4 2/3 innings in a 5-2 setback versus Cincinnati. Cole was charged with five earned runs, matching his total allowed from his previous six turns and marking the first time he surrendered more than three runs this season. The former No. 1 overall pick has been superb on the road with a 6-1 mark and 1.71 ERA.

After a decent season debut in which he limited Cleveland to two runs and three hits over seven innings, Verlander was rocked in his next outing at the New York Yankees. The former Cy Young Award winner and league MVP was tagged for six runs on 10 hits, three of which came on home runs, over 6 2/3 innings. Verlander is 4-1 with a 3.00 ERA in five starts against the Pirates and has kept center fielder Andrew McCutchen (2-for-13) in check.

              TRENDS:

*Pirates are 6-1 in Coles last 7 road starts.
*Tigers are 4-1 in Verlanders last 5 starts vs. Pirates.
*Under is 8-1-1 in Coles last 10 starts overall.
*Pirates are 2-8 in the last 10 meetings in Detroit.

              CONSENSUS:
Fifty-nine percent of Consensus users are currently on the Tigers.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MLB betting cheat sheet: Dodgers overrated away from home
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the mid-week major-league schedule:

                Dodgers Overrated On The Road

What do the Colorado Rockies, Atlanta Braves, Seattle Mariners and Oakland A's all have in common? Well in addition to the fact that all four teams rank among the worst in the major leagues, all four clubs have a better road record than the LA Dodgers. That's right folks, the mighty Dodgers are just 16-22 on the road this season. That hasn't stopped the bookmakers from routinely making them the favorite, and that is the case here again in Arizona (-117 on Tuesday).

Mad Max as the Road Warrior

Max Scherzer is the hottest hurler in the majors at the moment, coming off three very impressive wins. He tossed a complete game no hitter against the Brewers on June 14, and followed up with a no-hitter (near perfect game) against the Pirates six days later. His last start was another good one in a win at Philadelphia, and he'll be on the road in Atlanta on Thursday in pursuit of his 10th win of the season.

                Home Run Race Heating Up

Giancarlo Stanton is still out in front, and he was the favorite to run away with it, but he's now sidelined for 4-6 weeks with a broken hand. Colorado's Nolan Arenado is all of a sudden right in the thick of things with seven home runs in the last week. He's got 24 for the season, tied with Bryce Harper, while Cincinnati's Todd Frazier has 25, two fewer than the leader Stanton.

                Pitching Notes

*Matt Cain is scheduled to make his season debut for the Giants on Thursday in Miami, but the big news will be who starts on the mound for the Marlins in that game. Miami ace Jose Fernandez is set to make is 2015 debut for the Marlins, despite allowing four runs on six hits in a rehab assignment in Triple-A.

*Johnny Cueto is having another fine season, and he'll start at home in a matinee against the Twins on Wednesday. There might not be a better bet than Cueto at home during the day. He's 2-1 with a 1.78 ERA at home this season, and 2-2 with a 2.98 ERA during the day. Going back to 2012, he's 25-7 at home with a 2.13 ERA, and 25-4 with a 1.78 ERA in day games.

                Hitting Notes

*Robinson Cano has been having a disappointing season for the Mariners, but he might have a favorable matchup to look forward to on Wednesday against San Diego. The 32 year old is hitting .402 with four home runs and 15 RBIs in 87 career at bats versus Shields.

*Yanel Escobar is hitting .349 with a pair of home runs and 13 RBIs in the month of June, and he's really picked up the slack for the Nats who have been missing a couple of their best hitters. With Ryan Zimmerman and Jason Werth sidelined by injuries, the Nats haven't missed a beat, winning eight of their last nine heading into Monday's game.

                Weather Notes

                * There is a 66 percent chance of thunderstorms in Baltimore when the Orioles host the Texas Rangers at Camden Yards Tuesday.

                * Early forecasts for Wednesday predict a 54 percent chance of thunderstorms at Turner Field when the Atlanta Braves host the Washington Nationals.

                Umpire Trends

                * The Under has gone 4-1 in the last five games Will Little has worked behind home plate. He'll be working the plate in Toronto when the Jays host the Red Sox Tuesday.

                * Over bets have cashed the last four times Bob Davidson has called pitches. He'll be behind the dish in Cincinnati when the Minnesota Twins visit the Reds in interleague action Wednesday.

                Totals Streak

New York Yankees (8-4 O/U): The Yankees have been involved in quite a few slugfests lately, and they've been on the wrong side of quite a few of those. The fact that Michael Pineda, C.C. Sabathia and Masahiro Tanaka have all been roughed up in the past week is cause for concern in New York. The Yankees are 41-32 O/U for the season, and they've scored a major league best 271 runs in night games.

                Injury Notes

*Giancarlo Stanton leads the majors in home runs (27), and RBIs (67). He's going to be out for 4-6 weeks after having surgery to repair a broken bone in his hand. That's a huge blow for a Miami team that ranks near the bottom of the major leagues in scoring, and sits 11.5 games back of Washington in the NL East.

*Tim Lincecum might have been in danger of losing spot in the rotation anyway, but that decision may be a lot easier for Bruce Bochy if the former Cy Young winner is placed on the DL for the first time in his career. The right-hander was hit in the arm by a line drive in the second inning against Colorado on Saturday.

Keuchel starring in home starts this season

Houston Astros ace Dallas Keuchel is 7-0 with a 1.39 ERA in nine starts at home this season. The Astros are 7-2 in Keuchel's nine starts at Minute Maid Park.

The southpaw is probable to get the start in front of the home fans against the Kansas City Royals Tuesday evening. Oddsmakers have the Astros as -147 favorites.

Jays bettors hope Estrada's dominance continues

The Toronto Blue Jays will turn to Marco Estrada when they host the Boston Red Sox Tuesday evening. Estrada has been on fire in his previous two starts, allowing just one earned run on three hits in 15 2/3 innings of work over his past two starts.

The Jays won both starts and have come out on top in Estrada's past five outings heading into Tuesday's scheduled start. Eduardo Rodriguez is probable to start for the Sox.

Boston won the opener in the four-game set between AL East rivals by a score of 3-1 Monday. The Jays are -144 faves behind Estrada.

Lewis looks to exorcise demons at Camden Yards

Colby Lewis has never fared well against the Baltimore Orioles (1-4, 6.35 ERA lifetime), but he has especially struggled at Camden Yards. Lewis is 0-3 with a 5.74 ERA at Camden yards in four career starts.

The Texas Rangers have also lost each of those games that Lewis has started.

The Rangers are currently +131 when the visit the Orioles Tuesday.

Who says Petco Park is a pitcher-friendly park?

Whoever said Petco Park is favorable to pitchers should not talk to San Diego Padres starter Ian Kennedy. The righty heads into Tuesday's action with a personal 2-3 record and 6.82 ERA in seven starts this season.

For the sake of comparison, the 30-year-old is 2-3 with a 3.38 ERA in six road starts on the season.

Kennedy's home ERA ranks as the fourth-worst in the National League for hurlers with at least three starts in their home ball park. Only Erick Stults (7.33), Mat Latos (7.60) and Kyle Lohse (8.16) have a worse ERA in front of their home fans.

Kennedy will give it another shot for the Friars versus the Seattle Mariners Tuesday evening. Oddsmakers have the Padres as -120 home faves for the matchup.

This team cashes unders as an underdog

Under bettors rejoice when the Tampa Bay Rays are listed as underdogs, with the under going an amazing 22-5 in their last 27 games in that scenario.

That is the exact position the Rays will be in Tuesday night when they host Danny Salazar (4.06 ERA, 7-6 O/U) and the Cleveland Indians. The Rays and Erasmo Ramirez (4.23 ERA, 3-6 O/U) are currently +105 dogs.

The total for the game is sitting at 7.0.

Cardinals winning streak due to defense

The St. Louis Cardinals have won six consecutive games, with their defense shutting down opposing offenses. The Cards have allowed a mere nine runs in those six games, an average of 1.5 runs per game.

The Cardinals are currently -104 when they host the White Sox Tuesday.

Angels have under bettors wringing their hands

The under has cashed in eight of the Los Angeles Angels past nine contests. Those nine games have seen the Halos and their counterparts average 6.2 runs per game, but have score five or fewer runs five times.

The Angels have the twenty-third ranked offense (3.9 rpg) and the eleventh ranked defense (3.71 rpg) which has been a good sign for under bettors.

The Angels host the Yankees Tuesday with a current total of 8.
