Preview: Rockies (33-43) at Athletics (35-44)
    Game: 2
    Venue: O.co Coliseum
    Date: June 30, 2015 10:05 PM EDT

No NL team has won a series in Oakland since 2012, but Colorado's probably not concerning itself with a series victory.

Simply winning a game in an AL park needs to happen first, and with AL ERA leader Sonny Gray taking the mound Tuesday night, the Rockies matching the all-time record for a road losing streak in interleague play seems the more likely outcome.

Oakland (35-44) won 7-1 on Monday and is an MLB-best 18-5 at O.co Coliseum against the NL since the start of 2013. That spans nine-plus series with A's pitchers posting a 2.58 ERA and their lineup scoring 5.4 runs per game. In five interleague games this season, they're averaging 7.8 runs and batting .320.

The Rockies (33-43), meanwhile, have lost 14 straight in AL parks and can match the Los Angeles Dodgers' record 15-game streak from 2005-06.

Oakland has won the last four meetings with an average of 8.3 runs and is batting .321 in the last six. Monday's victory ended a three-game losing streak behind home runs from Josh Reddick, Billy Butler and Ike Davis. Butler has a .435 average in 13 games against NL teams.

Colorado got three hits from Troy Tulowitzki, who has a career-best 13-game hitting streak and is batting an MLB-leading .389 while reaching base in a career-best 28 straight.

Gray (9-3, 2.09 ERA), who's trying to become the AL's second 10-game winner, has allowed at least three runs in consecutive starts for the first time this season. The right-hander gave up three runs and nine hits in six innings of Thursday's 6-3 win in Texas and came away with the victory, and his manager acknowledged it wasn't quite the same pitcher Oakland has grown used to this season.

"He battles himself sometimes," Bob Melvin said. "He can be as tough on himself as opposed to battling the opponent, and there are periods during the season when you just don't feel completely locked in, which is odd to hear about him."

Gray is still just a passable outing away from becoming the first A's starter since Gio Gonzalez in 2011 (2.38) to enter July with an ERA under 2.50 and just the fourth dating to 1990. He's a strong outing away from joining Dan Haren (1.91 in 2007) and Justin Duchscherer (1.91, 2008) in breaking 2.00.

He hasn't faced an NL team this season but went 1-1 with a 4.81 ERA in four interleague starts in 2014. However, those numbers have often been enough to beat Jorge De La Rosa.

De La Rosa (4-3, 5.15) is probably struggling more than he ever has in Colorado, in part because his 4.84 walks per nine innings is his highest rate since spending 2006 with Milwaukee and Kansas City.

The left-hander overcame three walks to limit Arizona to one run and four hits in five innings of Thursday's 6-4 win, though he didn't receive the decision after leaving with a cut on the middle finger of his pitching hand. The recurrence of the injury is causing concern, but he was able to throw between starts without issue.

"We know this is something he's had in the past, and typically, he's been able to get over it," manager Walt Weiss said. "That cut opened up pretty good. We felt like if we let him go any longer, he was really going to tear that thing and maybe be looking at a possible DL situation. ... But it's something that's been fairly chronic, so there's some concern there."

Since joining the Rockies in 2008, De La Rosa is 2-2 with a 2.34 ERA in seven starts in AL parks, which includes a win in Oakland in 2009.

Preview: Fever (3-6) at Sun (7-1)

      Date: June 30, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

The Connecticut Sun can match the best start in team history and post their longest winning streak in nine years Tuesday night against the Indiana Fever, who are searching for answers after blowing a second-half lead thanks to sloppy play.

The Sun also opened 8-1 in 2005 and 2008, and they're on the verge of their first eight-game win streak since taking 12 in a row in 2006.

Connecticut likely won't overlook the last-place Fever (3-6) after two difficult victories over winless Los Angeles. The Sun rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit in a 76-68 road victory June 21 before trailing by as many as 14 in Friday's 80-76 overtime win.

Alex Bentley had 18 points Friday and is averaging 19.3 in the last three games.

The Sun average a league-best 11.5 steals and will try to take advantage of a Fever team that committed 11 second-half turnovers in Friday's 83-77 loss to Chicago. Indiana was outscored 40-25 after halftime.

"There's no defense for that," guard Shenise Johnson said. "If we're giving them the ball and they're getting layups, we can't cover that. We have to be better."

Marissa Coleman scored 16 points and Johnson added 15 for the Fever, who made 7 of 14 3-pointers and are second in the WNBA in that department at 37.4 percent.

The problem is that Indiana is third in the league with 15.1 turnovers per game.

"When things got a little tough, we had too many breakdowns on both ends," coach Stephanie White said. "We've seen a stretch of these breakdowns in every game. We have to be able to minimize the stretches."

Star forward Tamika Catchings is shooting a career-low 29.9 percent, including 6 of 32 in three road games.

The Fever and Sun split four 2014 matchups with each team winning at home. Indiana has dropped its last seven regular-season visits to Connecticut.

Preview: Liberty (5-4) at Sky (5-4)

        Date: June 30, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

There's a chance Epiphanny Prince will make her debut Tuesday night for the New York Liberty.

If she does, it would be against her former team and versus former New York star Cappie Pondexter.

These guards were dealt for each other in the offseason and the Liberty and Chicago Sky will meet for the first time since that trade Tuesday night at Allstate Arena.

Prince missed the first nine games for New York (5-4) while playing for Russia in the EuroBasket tournament. She's on her way back to the U.S. and may be in Chicago for this game.

Prince averaged a career-best 18.1 points in 2012, and 15.0 in each of the last two seasons. She was born and raised in New York.

The trade also brought Pondexter home since she was raised in Chicago. She played the previous five seasons with the Liberty, and ranks first in franchise history with 18.5 points per game.

Pondexter was dealt in part due to her career-low 13.2 scoring average last year. She is now averaging 16.9 points alongside WNBA leading scorer Elena Delle Donne, who is averaging 29.0 with her 261 points the most by a player in her first nine games in a season.

Delle Donne has made 48 straight free throws - two shy of her career-best streak from last year. She has a chance to eclipse the single-season record set by Lindsay Whalen, who made 54 straight in 2009.

Chicago (5-4) has won all nine matchups with New York since Delle Donne was drafted in 2013. She sat out twice due to Lyme disease in last year's four-game sweep.

Delle Donne scored 26 while Pondexter was held to 10 in Sunday's 86-71 loss at Washington. The Sky, who average a league-best 85.9 points, were held to their second-lowest point total.

The Liberty won for the second time in three games with Sunday's 79-70 home win over Los Angeles. Sugar Rodgers scored a career-high 23 points and Tina Charles added 16.

Delle Donne is third in the league with 9.6 rebounds per game while Charles is fifth at 8.8.

Preview: Shock (8-1) at Storm (2-7)

          Date: June 30, 2015 10:00 PM EDT

The Tulsa Shock matched the longest winning streak in franchise history by beating the Seattle Storm with Skylar Diggins registering one of her best career scoring performances.

The star guard was forced to leave in the final minute but will likely be available as the Shock go for a ninth straight victory in Tuesday night's rematch in Seattle.

Diggins scored 31 points - three shy of a personal high - but Tulsa (8-1) needed Riquna Williams' jumper with 10.9 seconds left to put away Seattle in Sunday's 93-89 victory. Williams and Plenette Pierson each had 19 points as the Shock matched their eight-game win streak from June 5-27, 2003, when the franchise was in Detroit.

Diggins was looked at by trainers after falling to the court with less than 45 seconds remaining but walked to the bench without help and without limping. She reportedly hurt her shin.

The Shock are hoping to have Diggins available as they seek to extend their best start since opening 10-1 in 2007, which was three seasons before moving to Tulsa.

The Shock's best start since relocating was previously a 1-2 record in 2010. They began 0-9 in 2012 and 0-5 in 2011 and last season, part of a 41-129 record in their first five seasons in Oklahoma.

"I think this franchise, these fans, they deserve this," center Courtney Paris said. "As players, we've all stuck it out and been positive. It's so much fun. I think we've got a good thing going."

Seattle (2-7) has lost five in a row, three shy of matching its franchise-worst skid from 2000, but got a promising performance from No. 1 overall draft pick Jewell Loyd. The guard had 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting after averaging 5.9 points while shooting 27.9 percent in her first eight games.

Ramu Tokashiki also scored 21 points Sunday and has totaled 35 on 17-of-28 shooting in her past two games. She averaged 4.0 points while making eight of 29 shots (27.6 percent) in her first seven contests.

Tokashiki will try to carry over that improvement to Seattle, where the Storm have lost three in a row.

Tulsa, 2-0 in the season's series, has dropped its last three games in Seattle and is 2-9 there since relocating.

The Shock have won three straight on the road since an 83-75 loss to Minnesota in their opener June 5. They haven't won four in a row away from home since a franchise-record six-game run in 2007.

            Stars-Mercury Preview

The Phoenix Mercury have struggled to find a rhythm during the season's first month, but they're hoping they can find some consistency with Brittney Griner back in the mix.

Griner looks to help the Mercury avoid a third straight loss Tuesday night when they host the San Antonio Stars.

Phoenix (3-5) lost 71-56 at Minnesota on Saturday in Griner's first game of the season. She scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds after serving a seven-game suspension for her domestic violence arrest in April.

She also had two blocks after leading the league with 3.8 per game in 2014.

"It's definitely good to be back on the court, being with the team," said Griner, who scored eight in the fourth quarter. "Got to get it together now."

The Mercury could be looking at their first three-game losing streak since July 21-Aug. 1, 2013 if they can't achieve better offensive execution. They committed 20 turnovers and were 19 of 57 from the field against the Lynx. They've been the league's worst shooting team at 37.4 percent after leading the WNBA in that category last year at 48.4.

Phoenix has won four of the last five meetings, splitting two already this season. The Stars beat the Mercury 76-71 at home on Thursday for their first win of the season and Phoenix won the season opener by the same score on its own court. Jia Perkins hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 24.6 seconds left in the Stars' win last week while the Mercury shot 36.5 percent.

San Antonio (2-6) seeks a third consecutive victory after holding its last two opponents to 71 points each. Kayla McBride scored 12 of her 23 points in the final 6:07 of a 73-71 win over Seattle on Saturday, helping the Stars overcome an eight-point deficit. She hit the go-ahead basket with 22 seconds left.

"I think we're really coming together, in our chemistry," McBride said. "That's the biggest difference from the first six games. As a team we're just working together on the offensive end and the defensive end."

The Stars have averaged 67.0 points while going 0-3 on the road.

Griner averaged 12.5 points, 10.3 rebounds and 3.0 blocks in four meetings last season.

Tigers' Over streak has reached double-digits

The Detroit Tigers continue to reward Over bettors in a big way, as the club has gone above the closing total in 10-straight games ahead of Tuesday's meeting with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Justin Verlander is the probable starter for the Tigers, while Gerrit Cole is slated to counter for the Bucs.

As of this writing, the total for the game was off the board.

Hamilton expects to start for Rangers on Tuesday

BALTIMORE -- Josh Hamilton is ready to rejoin the Texas Rangers.

The veteran outfielder, on the disabled list since June 4 with a left hamstring strain, was with the team Monday at Camden Yards and had every intention of being in the lineup for the series opener against the Baltimore Orioles.

The team's trainers, however, decided it would be prudent to give Hamilton an extra day of rest and hopefully get him back in the lineup Tuesday. It turned out the Rangers were just fine without him, as the offense finally awoke in an 8-1 victory over Baltimore.

MLB roundup: Indians rookie dominates Rays

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Cleveland rookie right-hander Cody Anderson took a perfect game into the seventh inning, and the Indians beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-1 with a combined three-hitter Monday at Tropicana Field.

Anderson (1-0) earned his first major league victory by throwing eight innings of two-hit, one-run ball. The 24-year-old, who dominated Tampa Bay in his debut June 21, retired the first 19 batters in order before designated hitter Grady Sizemore -- in just his second game with the Rays -- hit a solo home run to right field in the seventh inning.

Anderson struck out two and didn't walk a batter.

Jason Kipnis, Michael Brantley and Yan Gomes each had three hits for Cleveland, including a homer by Gomes.

Red Sox 3, Blue Jays 1

TORONTO -- Clay Buchholz pitched eight strong innings, and Xander Bogaerts drove in two runs as Boston defeated Toronto.

Buchholz (6-6) allowed five hits, no walks and one run while striking out five to earn his fourth win in a row over six starts. Koji Uehara pitched the ninth to earn his 17th save of the season.

By winning the opener of the four-game series, Buchholz improved his career record at Rogers Centre to 10-3. He entered the game with a 2.30 earned-run average in 14 starts there.

                    Rangers 8, Orioles 1

BALTIMORE -- Mitch Moreland hit two of Texas' four home runs, and the Rangers cooled down Baltimore.

Carlos Corporan and Shin-Soo Choo also went deep for Texas, which tied a season high for homers in a game. The Rangers snapped Baltimore's four-game winning streak.

Staked with an early lead, Wandy Rodriguez (5-3) kept the Orioles off balance for most of his outing. The left-hander allowed one run on eight hits with two walks and seven strikeouts over five-plus innings.

                    Brewers 7, Phillies 4

PHILADELPHIA -- In a clash of the two worst teams in the major leagues, Milwaukee took the opener of a four-game series against Philadelphia.

The Brewers erased a 4-1 deficit by slugging a season-high-tying 16 hits en route to their fifth win in seven games. The Phillies scored early but went silent to slip to 24 games below .500, tying their season-worst mark.

Jonathan Lucroy led the Milwaukee surge, going 4-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs, while Ryan Braun went 3-for-5 with an RBI.

                    Reds 11, Twins 7

CINCINNATI -- Billy Hamilton reached base four times, recorded four steals to reach 40 for the season, and scored three times, sparking Cincinnati to a victory over Minnesota.

Brian Dozier homered for Minnesota, which trailed 9-1 after three innings but scored six times in the fourth to get within two.

Reds relievers Nate Adcock, Manny Parra and Aroldis Chapman combined for five scoreless innings to stave off the Twins' comeback attempt. Adcock (1-0) earned his first National League win and first major league victory since 2011.

                    Astros 6, Royals 1

HOUSTON -- Lance McCullers capped a stellar month with seven strong innings, and Houston added to its major-league-leading total of multi-homer games in a victory over Kansas.

McCullers (4-2) gave up one run on four hits and two walks while recording six strikeouts, retiring 11 of 12 batters during one key stretch. He closed June with a 2.11 ERA, the lowest ERA in June by an Astros rookie since right-hander Darryl Kyle posted a 1.80 ERA in 1990.

Jose Altuve and Chris Carter homered for Houston.

                    A's 7, Rockies 1

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Josh Reddick, Ike Davis and Billy Butler homered, and rookie Kendall Graveman threw seven shutout innings, leading Oakland past Colorado.

The A's were homerless in their previous four games before erupting for three home runs against Colorado and ending their three-game losing streak.

Reddick and Davis hit two-run blasts in the first inning, and Butler added a solo shot in the fourth. Butler also doubled and finished with three hits, three runs and two RBIs. Davis added a double, and Stephen Vogt had two hits and scored a run.

                    Angels 4, Yankees 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Mike Trout homered, stole a base and made a couple of highlight-reel catches in center field to lead Los Angeles to a win over New York.

C.J. Wilson (6-6) went six strong innings to get the win, giving up one run and five hits, then getting stellar support from the bullpen. Trevor Gott (seventh inning), Joe Smith (eighth) and Huston Street (ninth, 22nd save) finished off the Yankees over the final three frames.

Trout homered (No. 20) in the third inning off CC Sabathia (3-8), then saved at least one run with a running catch in left-center off a drive hit by Chris Young in the fifth. He made another running catch on Chase Headley's drive to right-center in the sixth.

                    Diamondbacks 10, Dodgers 6

PHOENIX -- Welington Castillo doubled home the tiebreaking run, and Paul Goldschmidt added a two-run single in a four-run eighth inning as Arizona rallied to beat Los Angeles.

Nick Ahmed and Yasmany Tomas hit two-run homers for the Diamondbacks, who scored 10 runs in the final four innings to overcome a 4-0 deficit. Arizona managed only three singles off Los Angeles starter Mike Bolsinger, who left for a pinch hitter in the fifth inning after experiencing flu-like symptoms.

Jake Lamb drew a walk from right-hander Pedro Baez (1-1) to open the eighth inning before Castillo doubled for a 7-6 lead. Castillo scored on a throwing error by Baez after Chris Owings' bunt single, and Goldschmidt finished the inning with a two-run single.

Game of the Day: Pirates at Tigers
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Pirates at Detroit Tigers (+109, OFF)

Gerrit Cole makes his second attempt to become the first 12-game winner in the majors when the Pittsburgh Pirates visit the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series. Cole will lock up with Detroit's Justin Verlander, who will be making only his third start of the season after skipping his last turn due to back stiffness.

Despite owning one of the best records in baseball, Pittsburgh is already staring at a wild card after falling nine games behind first-place St. Louis in the National League Central. The Pirates have lost six of nine after dropping a 2-1 decision in Sunday's series finale to visiting Atlanta. The Tigers enter the series off a dramatic victory, rallying from a four-run deficit in the eighth inning before prevailing on rookie James McCann's walk-off homer against the Chicago White Sox. Detroit won two of three at Pittsburgh in April, with the one loss coming against Cole, who is 6-1 in eight interleague starts.

TV: 7:08 p.m. ET, ROOT (Pittsburgh), FSN Detroit

LINE HISTORY: Sportsbooks opened the Tigers +109, which is where the line was sitting at the time of writing.

INJURY REPORT: Pittsburgh - C. Hart (15-day DL), A. Lambo (60-day DL), J. Sellers (60-day DL), B. Cumpton (out for season). Detroit - J. Verlander (Probable), K. Lobstein (15-day DL), A. Avila (15-day DL), J. Nathan (out for season).

WEATHER FORECAST: There is currently a 24 percent chance of precipitation at game time. The forecast is calling for temperatures of 76 degrees Fahrenheit in the Pittsburgh area.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Gerrit Cole (11-3, 2.16 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Justin Verlander (0-1, 6.17)

Cole had his six-start winning streak halted in abrupt fashion, giving up four first-inning runs and lasting a season-low 4 2/3 innings in a 5-2 setback versus Cincinnati. Cole was charged with five earned runs, matching his total allowed from his previous six turns and marking the first time he surrendered more than three runs this season. The former No. 1 overall pick has been superb on the road with a 6-1 mark and 1.71 ERA.

After a decent season debut in which he limited Cleveland to two runs and three hits over seven innings, Verlander was rocked in his next outing at the New York Yankees. The former Cy Young Award winner and league MVP was tagged for six runs on 10 hits, three of which came on home runs, over 6 2/3 innings. Verlander is 4-1 with a 3.00 ERA in five starts against the Pirates and has kept center fielder Andrew McCutchen (2-for-13) in check.

                      TRENDS:

*Pirates are 6-1 in Coles last 7 road starts.
*Tigers are 4-1 in Verlanders last 5 starts vs. Pirates.
*Under is 8-1-1 in Coles last 10 starts overall.
*Pirates are 2-8 in the last 10 meetings in Detroit.

MLB betting cheat sheet: Dodgers overrated away from home

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for the mid-week major-league schedule:

                        Dodgers Overrated On The Road

What do the Colorado Rockies, Atlanta Braves, Seattle Mariners and Oakland A's all have in common? Well in addition to the fact that all four teams rank among the worst in the major leagues, all four clubs have a better road record than the LA Dodgers. That's right folks, the mighty Dodgers are just 16-22 on the road this season. That hasn't stopped the bookmakers from routinely making them the favorite, and that is the case here again in Arizona (-117 on Tuesday).

Mad Max as the Road Warrior

Max Scherzer is the hottest hurler in the majors at the moment, coming off three very impressive wins. He tossed a complete game no hitter against the Brewers on June 14, and followed up with a no-hitter (near perfect game) against the Pirates six days later. His last start was another good one in a win at Philadelphia, and he'll be on the road in Atlanta on Thursday in pursuit of his 10th win of the season.

                        Home Run Race Heating Up

Giancarlo Stanton is still out in front, and he was the favorite to run away with it, but he's now sidelined for 4-6 weeks with a broken hand. Colorado's Nolan Arenado is all of a sudden right in the thick of things with seven home runs in the last week. He's got 24 for the season, tied with Bryce Harper, while Cincinnati's Todd Frazier has 25, two fewer than the leader Stanton.

                        Pitching Notes

*Matt Cain is scheduled to make his season debut for the Giants on Thursday in Miami, but the big news will be who starts on the mound for the Marlins in that game. Miami ace Jose Fernandez is set to make is 2015 debut for the Marlins, despite allowing four runs on six hits in a rehab assignment in Triple-A.

*Johnny Cueto is having another fine season, and he'll start at home in a matinee against the Twins on Wednesday. There might not be a better bet than Cueto at home during the day. He's 2-1 with a 1.78 ERA at home this season, and 2-2 with a 2.98 ERA during the day. Going back to 2012, he's 25-7 at home with a 2.13 ERA, and 25-4 with a 1.78 ERA in day games.

                        Hitting Notes

*Robinson Cano has been having a disappointing season for the Mariners, but he might have a favorable matchup to look forward to on Wednesday against San Diego. The 32 year old is hitting .402 with four home runs and 15 RBIs in 87 career at bats versus Shields.

*Yanel Escobar is hitting .349 with a pair of home runs and 13 RBIs in the month of June, and he's really picked up the slack for the Nats who have been missing a couple of their best hitters. With Ryan Zimmerman and Jason Werth sidelined by injuries, the Nats haven't missed a beat, winning eight of their last nine heading into Monday's game.

                        Weather Notes

                        * There is a 66 percent chance of thunderstorms in Baltimore when the Orioles host the Texas Rangers at Camden Yards Tuesday.

                        * Early forecasts for Wednesday predict a 54 percent chance of thunderstorms at Turner Field when the Atlanta Braves host the Washington Nationals.

                        Umpire Trends

                        * The Under has gone 4-1 in the last five games Will Little has worked behind home plate. He'll be working the plate in Toronto when the Jays host the Red Sox Tuesday.

                        * Over bets have cashed the last four times Bob Davidson has called pitches. He'll be behind the dish in Cincinnati when the Minnesota Twins visit the Reds in interleague action Wednesday.

                        Totals Streak

New York Yankees (8-4 O/U): The Yankees have been involved in quite a few slugfests lately, and they've been on the wrong side of quite a few of those. The fact that Michael Pineda, C.C. Sabathia and Masahiro Tanaka have all been roughed up in the past week is cause for concern in New York. The Yankees are 41-32 O/U for the season, and they've scored a major league best 271 runs in night games.

                        Injury Notes

*Giancarlo Stanton leads the majors in home runs (27), and RBIs (67). He's going to be out for 4-6 weeks after having surgery to repair a broken bone in his hand. That's a huge blow for a Miami team that ranks near the bottom of the major leagues in scoring, and sits 11.5 games back of Washington in the NL East.

*Tim Lincecum might have been in danger of losing spot in the rotation anyway, but that decision may be a lot easier for Bruce Bochy if the former Cy Young winner is placed on the DL for the first time in his career. The right-hander was hit in the arm by a line drive in the second inning against Colorado on Saturday.
