    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

More pointspreads for six of college football's more interesting games this year:

    -- Sept 3: Michigan @ Utah (-4)

    -- Sept 4: Washington @ Boise State (-13)

    -- Sept 5: Texas @ Notre Dame (-7.5)

    -- Sept 19: Stanford @ USC (-4)

    -- Sept 26: Tennessee (-2.5) @ Florida

-- Oct 3: Ole Miss (-6) at Florida

    **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here.....

    13) Rangers 4, Blue Jays 0-- Yovani Gallardo blanked the Jays for 8.1 innings in the Rogers Centre, which is super impressive this season-- Toronto only got five men on base against him and they score a lot of runs at home.

    12) People are very nice in Toronto; rookie Matt Boyd left his first major league start down 4-0 in the 7th inning, but got a nice ovation from the home crowd. Think he gets a nice ovation in NYC if he leaves with the home side down 4-nil? Me either.

    11) Angels 4, Mariners 2-- Robinson Cano was sitting in dugout in between innings when an errant warmup throw drilled him in the forehead and forced him out of this game. Freak accident but another lousy night in a dismal Seattle season.

    10) Kenny Albert came up with a great stat on FOX Saturday; the last 11 no-hitters were all thrown by National League pitchers. Last AL pitcher to toss a no-hitter was Felix Hernandez in 2012.

    9) Speaking of no-hitters, a lefty named Ken Holtzman threw two of them for the Cubs, one in '69, one in '71. The first one, August 19, 1969 came against an Atlanta team that had Hank Aaron-Rico Carty-Orlando Cepeda batting 3-4-5. Damn- you toss a no-hitter against those three guys, thats a full day's work.

But the oddity of that no-hitter is this; Holtzman didn't strike anyone out, not even the opposing pitcher (Phil Niekro).

    8) Holtzman has a special place in my heart because the Cubs traded him to Oakland after the '71 season (for Rick Monday) and he helped the A's win three World Series in a row, in 72-73-74. He was a very underrated big-game pitcher.

    7) Staying in Oakland for a minute, you can buy a ticket package of all 13 A's home games in July, for..........take a guess. How much you think 13 games would go for? I'll post the answer a little further down the line in today's article.

    6) Andrew Cashner has given up 19 unearned runs this season, partially because he isn't pitching as well, partially because the Padres are terrible on defense. Jon Niese has allowed the second-most unearned runs this season, with 11.

    5) Jose Altuve is trailing in the All-Star voting, which is fine with me; he is on my fantasy team and I'd just as soon he had the four days off to rest his legs.

    4) Not sure why, but Jeff Samardzija has allowed a run or more in first inning in nine of his last eleven starts, which is really bad. A's got Marcus Semien and Josh Phegley for Samardzija and right now, they might have gotten the better end of the deal.

You can buy a ticket package to all 13 Oakland home games in July for $89; that is less than $7 a game. Lot of places, one beer costs $7, or more.

    3) Karl-Anthony Towns went #1 in the NBA Draft; six guys on Kentucky played more minutes than he did last winter. Has that ever happened before?

    2) Oakland Raiders lost the Super Bowl after the 2002 season, but they got there; since that day, the Raiders are 56-136, which is hard to believe.

    1) NBA free agency starts Wednesday; NBA is one league where the off-season is often more interesting than the actual season.

Blue Jays hot in Drew Hutchison's starts

The Toronto Blue Jays have won the last four ball games in which righty Drew Hutchison has started. Hutchison is slated to get the ball in Sunday's meeting with the Texas Rangers at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Hutchison has a personal record of 3-0 in those starts with the Jays cashing as -154 (Houston Astros) and -193 (New York Mets) faves and +113 (Tampa Bay Rays) and -101 (Boston Red Sox) underdogs.

As of Saturday evening, the Jays were pegged at -181. Chi Chi Gonzalez is probable to start for the Rangers.

Under bets hot as Dodgers' Greinke sparkles

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke has been on fire in four-straight starts, but his teammates are giving him little run support and Under bettors are capitalizing.

Greinke has allowed just three earned runs over the course of his past four outings, good for an ERA of 0.98. Trouble is, the Dodgers have won exactly one of those four games thanks to just five runners crossing the plate.

The righty will be eager for some run support when he takes the bump against the Giancarlo Stanton-less Miami Marlins in Florida Sunday afternoon.

Archer has been reliable when pitching as a fave

The Tampa Bay Rays have won Chris Archer's last eight starts when tabbed as faves this season.

Overall, the Rays have won five-straight games which the 26-year-old has started. The righty has an ERA of just 1.80 in those starts with the Rays defeating the Los Angeles Angels, Seattle Mariners, Chicago White Sox, Washington Nationals and Toronto Blue Jays over that stretch.

Giants Lincecum hit by liner, leaves game

Right-hander Tim Lincecum of the San Francisco Giants left Saturday's game in the top of the second after a line drive by second baseman DJ LeMahieu of the Colorado Rockies hit the pitcher on the right arm.

Right-hander Yusmeiro Petit relieved Lincecum, who allowed three runs on four hits in 1 2/3 innings.

Mariners 2B Cano exits game with head contusion

Seattle Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano left Saturday's game against the Los Angeles Angels after the sixth inning with a head contusion.

Cano was injured when an errant warm-up throw from Los Angeles shortstop Taylor Featherston to first baseman Albert Pujols before the start of the seventh inning struck Cano on the head.

The five-time All-Star had a visible welt on his forehead and left the field complaining of dizziness. He underwent Major League Baseball's concussion protocol test in the bottom of the seventh.

After getting tested, the Mariners said Cano did not have a concussion and he is listed as day to day.

Game of the Day: Cubs at Cardinals
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals (-129, 7.0)

The St. Louis Cardinals have dominated the National League Central rival Chicago Cubs in recent years, and they'll try to wrap up a three-game sweep of their division foe Sunday. The host Cardinals rallied to win in extra innings on Friday and routed the Cubs 8-1 on Saturday to move to the brink of their first series sweep of Chicago since the final weekend of the 2013 campaign.

The Cardinals have won five straight and 12 of 15 to pad baseball's best record, while the reeling Cubs have dropped four straight while scoring a total of six runs in their past five contests. St. Louis right-hander Carlos Martinez makes his first home start since May 31 after four straight road outings; he is 3-1 with a 3.12 ERA in six starts at Busch Stadium this season. After leaning on the bullpen for 4 2/3 innings of work Saturday, the Cubs need a strong outing from right-hander Jason Hammel. The veteran Hammel will have to contend with a hot-hitting Cardinals lineup led by second baseman Kolten Wong, who has recorded four straight multi-hit games.

Hammel is 2-0 with a 2.01 ERA over his last five starts and is coming off a dominant outing against the Los Angeles Dodgers in which he allowed two hits and struck out six in a 7 2/3 scoreless frames. The 32-year-old continues to pile up strikeouts at a career-best clip and has 92 in 91 2/3 innings compared to only 16 walks. Hammel is 1-2 with a 6.10 ERA in four starts against the Cardinals.

Martinez continued his breakout campaign Tuesday at Miami, striking out nine and limiting the Marlins to three runs over seven innings to earn his third win this month. The 23-year-old has pitched into the seventh in seven straight outings and has struck out eight or more in four of his last six starts. One of Martinez's few poor outings this season came against the Cubs on May 4, when he allowed seven runs and nine hits in 3 2/3 innings in a no-decision.

Price dominating AL Central since joining the Tigers

David Price has dominated the American League Central since joining the Detroit Tigers last season, with the Tigers going 11-0 in his last 11 starts versus division foes.

Price has pitched to a very good 2.04 ERA against the Central since becoming a Tiger and has recorded 93 strikeouts to just 16 walks.

Price (7-2, 2.42 ERA) and the Tigers will try to make it 12 in a row when they host the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox will counter with Jeff Samardzija (5-4, 4.53 ERA). Dettroit is currently a -168 home favorite.

Rays' Archer hot in this scenario

The Tampa Bay Rays are 8-0 in Chris Archer's last eight starts as a favorite and that is exactly what he will be this Sunday.

Archer (9-4, 2.10 ERA) and the Rays are currently -178 favorites going up against Justin Masterson (2-2, 6.37 ERA) and the Boston Red Sox.

Nationals RF Harper returns to lineup

Washington Nationals right fielder Bryce Harper, who has been dealing with hamstring soreness, was back in the lineup for Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader at Philadelphia.

Harper missed the last three games because of the leg issue suffered while running out a double in the 11th inning last Wednesday.

Harper is having a breakout season, batting .340 with 24 home runs and 58 RBIs.
