    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Why can people vote 35 times for All-Star Game? How about everyone gets one vote and thats that.

-- NHL awards show was in Las Vegas, its draft is in Florida; sound choices.

-- Chucky Brown/Tony Massenberg hold the all-time NBA record; they played for 14 teams each, the most of any NBA player ever.

-- Why don't pitchers wear single digit uniform numbers?

-- Colorado Rockies lead MLB with 13 rain delays, 12 of which were at home.

-- Virginia 4, Vanderbilt 2-- Cavaliers win first College World Series.

    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Only six months left until Christmas......

    13) First of all, with great sadness I report the passing of Mr Harvey Pollack at age 93. He was the godfather of basketball statistics, a guy who is responsible for the start of the analystics movement, way before anyone ever heard of the word analytics.

He was the first person to use plus/minus as a basketball stat; he worked for the 76ers for decades and was an original employee of the NBA. I put myself thru college as a student manager of the basketball team and a stat guy-- Harvey Pollack was my hero.

    12) I'm watching NBA TV's Mock Draft the night before the real draft and chances are it'll be better than ESPN's coverage of the draft tonight. Just can't take Jay Bilas-- ESPN screwed up badly letting him become their voice of college basketball.

    11) Stu Jackson just called Ohio State's D'Angelo Russell the most creative passer we've seen since Jason Kidd, which is quite a compliment.

    10) Kevin Love, Monta Ellis, Aaron Afflalo all opted out of their cntracts and will become free agents.

    9) If you're a college basketball player who won't make an NBA team, do you play overseas or go to the D-League? You'll make more money overseas, but you're more accessible to the NBA for 10-day contracts in the D-League. Interesting decision a lot of kids have to make. Getting your foot in the NBA door is a big deal.

    8) First day of the NBA Summer League next month at UNLV: Minnesota-Lakers are playing the first day, with top two picks in tonight's draft facing each other.

    7) Astros lost in 13 innings in Anaheim yesterday; they used George Springer as a pinch-runner in a 1-1 game in ninth inning- he got picked off before a pitch was thrown to the next hitter. Nothing like being ready to play.

    6) Baseball teams have these complex algorithms that predict success/failure; hard for me to criticize it, since they're way over my head academically, but the Red Sox gave Rick Porcello a $100M contract, even though he gave up 622 hits in in 558 IP over the last three years. Porcello is 4-8, 5.61 in 14 starts this year.

In other words, whatever algorithm Boston used to pay Porcello, they should put it up on their computer screen, then hit the delete key. Use some common sense!!!

    5) Marco Estrada had a no-hitter in 8th inning for second start in a row yesterday; he threw 129 pitches before being taken out, most any big league pitcher has thrown so far this season. Blue Jays won the game 1-0 in 12 innings.

    4) You watch Starlin Castro play for the Cubs and you wonder what his future is; he has ability but he doesn't run balls out, his mind wanders in the field, he's not what you want in a middle infielder, where defense is so important. If Cubs try to trade him with Addison Russell also a shortstop, you wonder who will take Castro?

    3) American League has an 85-68 lead over the National League in interleague play, which should be the measure used to determine home field for the World Series.

    2) Mets are falling apart; they're under .500 now, they've lost seven games in a row, all while Justin Turner is hitting .323 and batting third for the Dodgers, a team with the biggest payroll in baseball history. The Mets let Turner walk as a free agent after the 2013 season-- think they could use him now?

Show me a statistic that measures heart, that measures how a guy adds to a team with his positive attitude and hustle; you can't; the eye-test is still essential!!!!

    1) UCLA's football coaches don't want charges pressed against Sean Combs, because they want the whole strength coach scuffle/debacle to go away, since they think it'll hurt them in recruiting, but the coaches do think the elder Combs is a jerk.

Giants lose Aoki for six weeks with broken leg

SAN FRANCISCO -- Left fielder Nori Aoki was all set to start Tuesday night against the San Diego Padres despite some pain in his lower right leg.

He convinced San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy to allow him to return to the top of the lineup after he was held out of the club's previous game.

Then came the bad news: X-rays taken during the day revealed a fractured leg, prompting Aoki's removal from the lineup and, on Wednesday, his placement on the disabled list.

The Giants expect Aoki to miss at least six weeks.

No doubt, the .317 hitter will be missed. But that wasn't the case for one night anyway.

Aoki's replacement will be supersub Gregor Blanco, who moved atop the lineup Tuesday and got on base four times, twice via hits and twice on walks. He scored one of the Giants' runs in a 3-2, 11-inning loss to the Padres.

Rangers recall OF Choice, demote LHP Claudio

The Texas Rangers recalled outfielder Michael Choice from Triple-A Round Rock on Wednesday and demoted left-hander Alex Claudio.

Choice was hitting .242 for Round Rock, although he was batting .400 with 10 RBIs in his last 11 games.

Claudio is 1-1 with a 2.87 ERA in 18 appearances for the Rangers.

Pirates call up RHP Volstad, put Hart on DL

The Pittsburgh Pirates promoted right-hander Chris Volstad from Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday and placed utility player Corey Hart on the 15-day disabled list.

Volstad, 28, returns to the majors for the first time since 2013, when he put up a 10.80 ERA in six games with the Colorado Rockies.

In parts of six seasons with the Florida Marlins, Chicago Cubs and Rockies, Volstad is 35-51 with a 4.94 ERA.

In 14 games (12 starts) for Indianapolis this season, he has gone 5-2 with a 3.43 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 76 innings.

Hart, 33, has been dealing with a left shoulder impingement. He is hitting .222 with two home runs.

                Thursday, June 25

Chance of thunderstorms at Wrigley Thursday

Forecasts are calling for rain before first pitch at Wrigley Field but the possibility of thunderstorms still exist during gametime when the Chicago Cubs host the Los Angeles Dodgers Thursday afternoon.

There is as much as a 100 percent probability of showers leading up to the game with a 51 percent chance of thunderstorms looming during the game.

The Cubs are presently -120 home faves with Jon Lester scheduled to pitch while the Dodgers will counter with Carlos Frias. The total is currently off the board.

This team struggling with Carapazza as umpire

The New York Mets have gone just 1-7 in their last eight games when umpire Victor Carapazza is tasked with calling pitches. Carapazza will be working Thursday's meeting with the Milwaukee Brewers.

No matter the umpire, the Mets have been struggling recently. They bring a seven game losing skid into Thursday's finale against the Brew Crew.

Jacob deGrom will try to snap the drought as the Mets are -125 at Miller Park. The Brewers, +115, will counter with Taylor Jungmann.

Home team is hot with Estabrook behind the plate

The Home team has gone 4-0 in the last four ball games when umpire Mike Estabrook is behind home plate. Estabrook will be calling pitches in Washington as the Nationals and Atlanta Braves finish up a three-game series at Nationals Park Thursday afternoon.

Estabrook ranks 16th overall in our MLB Umpire Homer statistics with a home team record of 9-4. The hosts average 5.08 runs per game compared to the visitors' 3.31 in his games.

Doug Fister is scheduled to start for the Nats (-159) while Matt Wisler is expected to start for the visitors (+145).

White Sox struggling in underdog role

The Chicago White Sox head into Thursday's meeting with the Detroit Tigers on a seven-game losing skid when pegged as underdogs.

Losses to the Minnesota Twins (+125), Pittsburgh Pirates (+119, +105, +141, +179) and Tampa Bay Rays (+159, +135) comprise the recent streak in the underdog role.

The Sox have won three of five overall heading into Thursday's series opener with their AL Central rivals, but did lose 6-1 to the Minnesota Twins with ace Chris Sale pitching Wednesday.

The Pale Hose are presently +126 with Carlos Rodon on the bump. The Tigers, who are projected to give the ball to Alfredo Simon, are -137.

Diamondbacks struggling when trying for .500

The Arizona Diamondbacks head into Thursday's meeting with the Colorado Rockies with a record of 35-36 but have struggled of late when attempting to even their record at .500. The Dbacks have lost eight consecutive contests when trying to reach that winning percentage.

The Snakes, who improved to 35-36 with an 8-7 win over the Rockies Wednesday, will send Rubby De La Rosa to the mound in the series finale. The Rockies will counter with Jorge De La Rosa to complete the All De La Rosa pitching matchup.

The Dbacks are presently +106 as they attempt to reach the elusive .500 mark.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MLB betting cheat sheet: Tigers look like locks to go over totals
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for this weekend’s major-league schedule:

Tigers burning bright—at least on offense

Seven consecutive contests involving the Detroit Tigers have gone over the total. They have scored 29 runs in their last four and they have allowed 54 runs in their last eight. Right fielder J.D. Martinez has hit safely in 14 of his last 17 games. First baseman Miguel Cabrera (.397 average in June) has a ridiculous nine multi-hit performances in his last 13 games.

                  Cashner not cashing in

San Diego Padres’ righty Andrew Cashner has not gone seven innings since May 27, a span of five starts. He is 2-9 this year partly because of a 4.35 ERA and also due to a horrendous defense behind him. Of Cashner’s 62 runs allowed in 2015, a whopping 19 have been unearned. The 28-year-old is 0-5 at home, where he will face the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday.

                  Beasts of the East?

Are the Washington Nationals finally taking control of the National League East? They have won five in a row (1-4 O/U) and have surrendered a mere five total runs during this current streak. Meanwhile, the New York Mets—now 3.5 games back—have lost seven in succession and have scored a miniscule nine runs during the skid. They are also 1-8 O/U in their last nine.

                  Pitching Notes

                  * Michael Wacha of the St. Louis Cardinals will start against the Chicago Cubs on Saturday at home, where he owns a 3.16 ERA compared to a 2.68 mark on the road. Wacha is 9-3 with a 2.85 ERA on the season, but he has given up 11 earned runs in his last three starts (18 innings).

                  * Scott Kazmir will also take the mound at home on Saturday, and that is outstanding news for the Oakland Athletics. Kazmir is 3-1 with a 1.27 ERA in Oakland this season; he is 1-3 with a 4.20 ERA on the road. The A’s have won the right-hander’s last three starts and he has allowed only three earned runs in his last 20.1 innings of work.

                  Hitting Notes

                  * Since last Thursday, the Philadelphia Phillies have four regulars who are hitting between .348 and .481. Third baseman Maikel Franco is leading the way with 13 hits, three homers, and 11 RBIs in his last six games. The over is 6-0 in the team’s last six and 8-1 in its last nine.

                  * Right fielder Shin-Soo Choo is among the Texas Rangers who have gone quiet with the bats. Choo (.233, 8 HR, 32 RBI) is hitting .227 in June and he has missed the past two games with back spasms. Texas has scored more than two runs only once in its last six outings.

                  Weather Notes

                  * There is a 51 percent possibility of thunderstorms at Wrigley Field when the Chicago Cubs host the L.A. Dodgers Thursday.

                  * Forecasts suggest a 54 percent chance of thunderstorms and winds blowing in from leftfield at around 12 mph when the Cubs visit the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday.

                  Umpire Notes

                  * The New York Mets are just 1-7 in their last eight games with Victor Carapazza umpiring behind home plate. He'll be calling pitches when the Mets visit the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday.

                  Totals Streak

New York Yankees (40-29-3 O/U): Thanks to seven straight games going over the total, the Yankees are one of the most profitable over teams in the business in 2015. The winning team has reached double-digits in the run column in each of New York’s last five contests. In their seven most recent outings, the Yankees have crossed the plate 58 times. They have also allowed 36 runs in their last four.

                  Injury Notes

                  * San Francisco Giants' left fielder Nori Aoki was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday because of small fracture in his right fibula. There is no timetable for his return, but Aoki (.317, 2 HR, 19 RBI, 12 SB) is expected to miss considerably more than 15 days. He has already been out since leaving last Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

                  * The Los Angeles Angels placed starter Jered Weaver on the 15-day disabled list earlier this week and they do not expect him back before the all-star break. L.A. has an off day on Thursday so they do not need an extra starter to fill in for Weaver (4-8, 4.75 ERA) during this weekend’s three-game series against the visiting Seattle Mariners.
