MLB betting cheat sheet: Tigers look like locks to go over totals

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for this weekend’s major-league schedule:

Tigers burning bright—at least on offense

Seven consecutive contests involving the Detroit Tigers have gone over the total. They have scored 29 runs in their last four and they have allowed 54 runs in their last eight. Right fielder J.D. Martinez has hit safely in 14 of his last 17 games. First baseman Miguel Cabrera (.397 average in June) has a ridiculous nine multi-hit performances in his last 13 games.

Cashner not cashing in

San Diego Padres’ righty Andrew Cashner has not gone seven innings since May 27, a span of five starts. He is 2-9 this year partly because of a 4.35 ERA and also due to a horrendous defense behind him. Of Cashner’s 62 runs allowed in 2015, a whopping 19 have been unearned. The 28-year-old is 0-5 at home, where he will face the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday.

Beasts of the East?

Are the Washington Nationals finally taking control of the National League East? They have won five in a row (1-4 O/U) and have surrendered a mere five total runs during this current streak. Meanwhile, the New York Mets—now 3.5 games back—have lost seven in succession and have scored a miniscule nine runs during the skid. They are also 1-8 O/U in their last nine.

Pitching Notes

* Michael Wacha of the St. Louis Cardinals will start against the Chicago Cubs on Saturday at home, where he owns a 3.16 ERA compared to a 2.68 mark on the road. Wacha is 9-3 with a 2.85 ERA on the season, but he has given up 11 earned runs in his last three starts (18 innings).

* Scott Kazmir will also take the mound at home on Saturday, and that is outstanding news for the Oakland Athletics. Kazmir is 3-1 with a 1.27 ERA in Oakland this season; he is 1-3 with a 4.20 ERA on the road. The A’s have won the right-hander’s last three starts and he has allowed only three earned runs in his last 20.1 innings of work.

Hitting Notes

* Since last Thursday, the Philadelphia Phillies have four regulars who are hitting between .348 and .481. Third baseman Maikel Franco is leading the way with 13 hits, three homers, and 11 RBIs in his last six games. The over is 6-0 in the team’s last six and 8-1 in its last nine.

* Right fielder Shin-Soo Choo is among the Texas Rangers who have gone quiet with the bats. Choo (.233, 8 HR, 32 RBI) is hitting .227 in June and he has missed the past two games with back spasms. Texas has scored more than two runs only once in its last six outings.

Weather Notes

* There is a 51 percent possibility of thunderstorms at Wrigley Field when the Chicago Cubs host the L.A. Dodgers Thursday.

* Forecasts suggest a 54 percent chance of thunderstorms and winds blowing in from leftfield at around 12 mph when the Cubs visit the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday.

Umpire Notes

* The New York Mets are just 1-7 in their last eight games with Victor Carapazza umpiring behind home plate. He'll be calling pitches when the Mets visit the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday.

Totals Streak

New York Yankees (40-29-3 O/U): Thanks to seven straight games going over the total, the Yankees are one of the most profitable over teams in the business in 2015. The winning team has reached double-digits in the run column in each of New York’s last five contests. In their seven most recent outings, the Yankees have crossed the plate 58 times. They have also allowed 36 runs in their last four.

Injury Notes

* San Francisco Giants' left fielder Nori Aoki was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday because of small fracture in his right fibula. There is no timetable for his return, but Aoki (.317, 2 HR, 19 RBI, 12 SB) is expected to miss considerably more than 15 days. He has already been out since leaving last Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

* The Los Angeles Angels placed starter Jered Weaver on the 15-day disabled list earlier this week and they do not expect him back before the all-star break. L.A. has an off day on Thursday so they do not need an extra starter to fill in for Weaver (4-8, 4.75 ERA) during this weekend’s three-game series against the visiting Seattle Mariners.

The other game on the CFL sked is Thursday’s opening night matchup between the Ottawa RedBlacks and Montreal Alouettes, with the Als pegged as 8-point home chalk. This is the first Week 1 matchup for an Ottawa team since the Renegades back in 2005 – the team’s final season. Ottawa was blown away 41-16 at Edmonton that year.

As for Montreal, it’s been a solid winner but bad bet in Week 1, boasting a 6-4 SU mark but a 4-6 ATS record in that span. The Alouettes were 3-1 SU but 1-3 ATS (1-3 O/U as well) at home during that time frame. Montreal has just edged Week 1 opponent over the past decade with an average score of 27.5-27.1.

Ottawa Redblacks at Montreal Alouettes (-8, 47)

The Montreal Alouettes host the Ottawa Redblacks to kick off the 2015 CFL season on Thursday. The Alouettes started the 2014 campaign 1-7, but won eight of their next nine games to clinch a playoff spot before eventually falling to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the East Division final.

Montreal hopes the additions of veteran receivers Fred Stamps and Nik Lewis will add offensive punch to a unit that finished eighth in the league at 294.5 yards per game. The Redblacks look to bounce back from a difficult opening season in the CFL after losing a league-worst 16 games in 2014. Ottawa lost all three meetings to Montreal last season and dropped a 26-9 decision to the Alouettes in preseason play on June 13. Ottawa was held to 10 points or fewer in eight games last year and hopes the addition of electrifying wide receiver/kick returner Chris Williams, who spent two seasons in the NFL, will energize the offence.

LINE HISTORY: The Als were initially -7.5 before moving up to -8. The total has jumped a full point from 46 to 47.

ABOUT THE REDBLACKS (2014: 2-16): Veteran quarterback Henry Burris passed for 3,728 yards and 11 touchdowns, but threw 14 interceptions and was largely ineffective behind an inept offensive line. "We need trust and have to be on the same page," Burris told reporters. "We have an opportunity to get our season off to a good start against a very good team that was in the East final last year." The Redblacks boast a revamped receiving corps with five new faces, including Williams and Brad Sinopoli, who played collegiately at the University of Ottawa.

ABOUT THE ALOUETTES (2014: 9-9): Jonathan Crompton hopes to build off an encouraging second half of the season after throwing for 2,482 yards and 11 touchdowns. Tyrell Sutton and Brandon Rutley will get the bulk of the carries after the Alouettes recently released Brandon Whitaker, who led the team in rushing with 764 yards last season. "Sutton has come on over the last couple of years," Montreal general manager Jim Popp told reporters. "Rutley has continued to develop."

Alouettes were top Under play in 2014

The Montreal Alouettes open the CFL season at home against the Ottawa RedBlacks Thursday evening, and die-hard CFL bettors will remember that the Als were the top Under play last season, tied with the Edmonton Eskimos with a 5-13 Over/Under mark.

The Als were 4-5 O/U at home last season, but did finish under the total in all three meetings with the RedBlacks last year (one meeting in Montreal).

The total for Thursday's opener opened at 46 but currently sits at 47 or 47.5 depending on the book.

Over bets on a tear in WNBA recently

If you've blindly bet the Over in the WNBA recently, you're laughing all the way to bank. Over bets have gone 6-1 in the past seven games since Saturday, June 20.

And it's not even close.

The six games that have gone over the number have eclipsed the closing mark by 14, 27.5, 8.5, 7, 13, 25.5 and 37 points, capped by the Chicago Sky's 100-96 win over the Atlanta Dream easily leaving the closing 159 in the rearview mirror.

There are two games on the board Thursday as the Phoenix Mercury visit the San Antonio Stars (149) and the Seattle Storm host the Minnesota Lynx (145.5).
