            Wednesday's Tip Sheet

            June 24, 2015

Cincinnati Reds at Pittsburgh Pirates | 7:05 p.m. ET

When it comes to discussing who will start the All-Star Game for the National League in a few weeks, it really only involves two pitchers: former Cy Young winner Max Scherzer or one of the starters in this particular matchup, Gerrit Cole (11-2, 1.78 ERA), who arguably has been just as dominant as Scherzer has. Not only that, he’s just been so remarkably consistent, as there really hasn’t been one outing this season where he was off his game. Just look at his game log and you’ll notice that in 12 of his 14 starts, he’s yielded two runs or less, and has never allowed more than three. Altogether, he has logged 12 quality starts in the process, which actually leads the league. With a 97/22 K/BB ratio in 91 innings, it’s no wonder that the third-year pitcher has pretty much been able to do whatever he pleases on the mound, and as a result, it’s always worth monitoring the lines for his games. He’s understandably a heavy -180 favorite at PNC Park tonight.

Mike Leake (4-4, 4.01 ERA) was experiencing similar success for the division-rival Reds at one point this season, before hitting a severe rough patch. He actually possessed a shiny 2.36 ERA entering the middle of May, but ran into some struggles, as he proceeded to give up five runs or more in three consecutive outings. Since then, though, the 2009 first-round pick has settled in again, with four consecutive starts surrendering three runs or less, including three quality starts over that span. Of note, Leake has actually been at his best on the road this season, with a 3.00 ERA and 0.92 WHIP in seven away starts, compared to a 5.18 ERA and 1.56 WHIP in seven starts at him. The over/under for this one is 6.5

New York Mets at Milwaukee Brewers | 8:10 p.m. ET

Their feel-good and tremendous start to the season is suddenly all gone. After last night’s loss to the last-place Brewers, the Mets now find themselves back to square one, being at the .500 mark for the first time since they were 3-3. Most painfully of all, they’ve been been losing mostly close games on their current losing stretch, with their last four losses alone all being by two runs or less. The Metsies will turn to Bartolo Colon (9-5, 4.81 ERA), one of the league leaders in victories despite his unpleasant ERA. The 42-year-old is coming off one of his worst starts of the year, when he surrendered seven runs (six earned) in 4.1 innings versus Toronto, but prior to that, had fired four consecutive quality starts. The Mets are really going to need him to step up here and put an end to this six-game losing streak.

If New York is to put a clamp on it, they’ll have to go through Brewers young right-hander Jimmy Nelson (3-8, 4.64 ERA), who has seemingly been the equivalent of Mr. Jekyll-and-Hyde (much like Twins starter Kyle Gibson was in 2014). In fact, in exactly half of his 14 starts this season, he’s allowed two runs or less, which is really good. But in six of the other seven, he’s given up four runs or more, which is troubling. He’s been reliable at eating up innings, however, lasting five innings or more in all but one of his starts, which is impressive for a pitcher in just his second big league season. Additionally, his 70/32 K/BB ratio in 83 innings total this season would seem to point to better days ahead. The linesmakers apparently think this, too, and have curiously set him as a -120 home favorite against the contending Mets.

Kansas City Royals at Seattle Mariners | 10:10 p.m. ET

Off the top of your head, do you know what Major League starting pitcher has the best ‘unders’ record in baseball this year? Well that would be ‘Zylbert Guy’ Roenis Elias (4-4, 3.56 ERA), who, despite not even breaking camp with the club back in April (because of Taijuan Walker’s amazing spring), has been absolutely marvelous for a team that is still trying to break out. Elias is 9-1-1 towards under bets this year, although interestingly, his last two starts have yielded an over and a push. In any case, the Cuban southpaw got back on track in his last outing, which followed up his worst performance of the season, striking out a career-high-tying ten against the Astros and holding them to two runs in seven sharp innings. Overall, he’s allowed three runs or less in all but two of his starts.

Squaring off with Elias is another talented left-hander, Danny Duffy (2-3, 5.87 ERA), who will be making his first start since May 16 after spending more than two months on the disabled list due to shoulder soreness and left biceps tendinitis. As you can tell from his numbers of the year, he was struggling a bit prior to the injury, but did have a respectable 3.45 ERA before getting hammered in his three May starts. Duffy really was perhaps the most underrated component of last year’s run to the World Series for the Royals, considering he posted an excellent 2.53 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 2014, and his .209 batting-average-against ranked him high amongst league leaders. It will be an interesting lefty-vs-lefty matchup, having an over/under line of 7, and both teams are -110 for this rubber game.

Five MLB pitchers beating the bookies on the road

                Jun 23, 2015

More so than any other sport, baseball players are creatures of habit. From pregame stretching to meals to specific batter’s box idiosyncrasies, most ballplayers believe they are at their very best when they have at least some modicum of control over a given situation.

This concept is most readily apparent when analyzing a team or player’s home/road splits, as athletes tend to enjoy a higher level of relaxation when playing within the comfortable, familiar confines of their home ballparks. So it should come as no surprise that at the current moment, 20 of Major League Baseball’s 30 franchises currently sport a superior winning percentage at home than they do on the road.

It’s not brain surgery. Proximity to family, a familiar bed to sleep in at night and a tried-and-true game day schedule are just a few of the reasons why baseball players tend to enjoy greater success when playing at home.

This concept is most certainly not lost on bookmakers, who always pay specific attention to which teams are playing host on a given day. As a result, home teams may experience an inflated price tag due to those aforementioned comforts as well as the privilege of batting last.

So if the possibility exists that a given betting line is slightly inflated due to the location in which a team is playing, gamblers should be looking to unearth value in teams and more specifically, pitchers, who tend to perform at their very best when taking the mound on the road.

With almost three months of baseball completed and in the books, let’s take a look at the major league pitchers who are returning the most lucrative results when recording a decision in enemy territory.

Note: The dollar amount listed in parenthesis is based on laying either $100 with a dog or betting to win $100 with the favorite.

                TOP 5

Wandy Rodriguez, LHP, Texas Rangers (4-0, +$695): The 36-year-old southpaw is a respectable 4-2 with a 3.20 ERA overall this season, but Rodriguez’s game soars to new heights when the 10-year veteran takes the bump away from Arlington, as evidenced by the fact that Rodriguez boasts a perfect 4-0 record with a lights-out 2.28 ERA on the road.

What’s even more impressive is that Rodriguez has won all four of those aforementioned road outings as an underdog of anywhere from +136 to +249, which features wins over Clayton Kershaw and Clay Buchholz.

Gerrit Cole, RHP, Pittsburgh Pirates (6-1, +$494): A serious contender for the National League Cy Young Award three months into the season, Cole owns glistening numbers both home and on the road, with the 24 year old limiting opposing hitters to a batting average of just .234 in Pittsburgh and .222 elsewhere.

And the scary part is that this guy continues to get better, as Cole’s three-game road winning streak to open the season came to an end on May 16 at Wrigley Field against Jon Lester, which immediately prompted another three-game winning streak that is currently still active.

Chris Heston, RHP, San Francisco Giants (5-1, +$488): The proud owner the first no-hitter of the 2015 season, the amazing part about Chris Heston’s story is that he was toiling away in the minor leagues when the defending champs broke camp back in March. But injuries to both Matt Cain and Jake Peavy opened the door for the 27-year-old righty, who has won four straight decisions capped by a no-hitter against the New York Mets that featured 11 strikeouts on June 9.

Cain and Peavy are set to return to the San Francisco lineup within the next two weeks, but there has been no mention of Heston losing his place in the starting rotation, as it’s more likely Tim Hudson, Ryan Vogelsong and/or Tim Lincecum will be asked to give up their spots.

Chris Archer, RHP, Tampa Bay Rays (6-1, +$478): The 6-foot-3, 190-pounder has recorded a decision in all seven road starts this season, with six of those outings resulting in a win as a favorite. While Archer boasts as substandard 2-4 home mark, most of that can be attributed to a lack of run support, as one of the best up-and-coming pitchers in baseball is currently rocking a home ERA of 2.95.

Road starts have been a vastly different story, however, as the 26 year old owns a 1.13 ERA with just one home run surrendered in 40 innings pitched on the road.

Jake Arrieta, RHP, Chicago Cubs (5-1, +$404): Arrieta’s 7-5 overall record looks respectable enough until you recognize the fact that this five-year veteran has been absolutely dealing away from Wrigley Field, with a 2.78 ERA that features 7.14 strikeouts for every walk. That may not seem like an impressive statistic, but compare it with Arrieta’s 3.29 strikeout-to-walk ratio at home and you quickly understand that this guy demonstrates far better control of his offerings when departing the Windy City.

At the current moment, the 29 year old has claimed three consecutive favorable road decisions, highlighted by a complete game, 8-0 blanking of the Minnesota Twins on Sunday.
