MLB roundup: Nearly perfect, Nationals' Scherzer throws no-hitter

WASHINGTON -- Max Scherzer turned in his second fabulous outing in a row, pitching a no-hitter as the Washington Nationals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-0 on Saturday before a sellout crowd of 41,104.

Scherzer lost a perfect game when he hit Jose Tabata with a pitch on a 2-2 count with two outs in the ninth. Scherzer then retired second baseman Josh Harrison on a fly ball to left field for the last out.

Scherzer, who also contributed a hit at the plate, struck out 10 in his third career complete game and third shutout. Scherzer (8-5) was making his first start since he threw a one-hit shutout with a franchise-record 16 strikeouts on Sunday in Milwaukee.

Bryce Harper and Tyler Moore each drove in two runs. Harper hit his 23rd homer of the season.

      White Sox 3, Rangers 2

CHICAGO -- Carlos Rodon bounced back from his first big-league loss with six solid innings and Chicago ended a season-high eight-game losing streak.

White Sox closer David Robertson, who failed to protect a one-run lead Friday night when starter Chris Sale threw eight scoreless innings and struck out 14, earned his 14th save with a perfect ninth.

The bullpen effort earned Rodon (3-1) the victory after the rookie left-handed pitcher allowed only two runs in six innings. Rodon scattered four hits and struck five while walking three.

      Orioles 5, Blue Jays 3

TORONTO -- Caleb Joseph singled home the go-ahead run in the ninth inning as Baltimore beat Toronto.

Manny Machado added a two-run double in the three-run ninth as the Orioles snapped the Blue Jays' three-game winning streak.

Right-handed reliever Darren O'Day (3-0), who pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth, picked up the win. Blue Jays left-handed reliever Aaron Loup (2-4) took the loss.

      Cubs 4, Twins 1 (10)

MINNEAPOLIS -- Starlin Castro's two-run single in the top of the 10th inning helped Chicago snap a two-game losing streak and end Minnesota's three-game winning streak.

Chris Denorfia added an RBI single later in the inning, giving the Cubs a three-run advantage. Blaine Boyer took the loss, allowing three earned runs on three hits and a walk in 2/3 inning.

Chicago's Jon Lester pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out seven. Minnesota right-hander Trevor May lasted six innings, giving up one run on seven hits and two walks while also striking out seven.

      Rockies 5, Brewers 1

DENVER -- Chad Bettis pitched into the seventh as Colorado stopped a five-game losing streak and won for just the second time in 11 games.

Charlie Blackmon hit a two-run homer and had a season-high three RBIs. Michael McKenry and Ben Paulsen drove in Colorado's other runs.

      Adam Lind homered for Milwaukee.

      A's 4, Angels 1

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Jesse Hahn gave up one run in 7 2/3 innings and Oakland defeated Los Angeles.

Hahn allowed four hits, struck out four and walked four to improve to 4-1 in his past six starts. Stephen Vogt went 3-for-3 with an RBI and one of the A's five doubles.

Jared Weaver lost his fourth straight start, matching his career high. Mike Trout went 1-for-2, scored a run and walked twice.

      Marlins 5, Reds 0

CINCINNATI -- Justin Nicolino posted his first major-league victory in his debut and third baseman Derek Dietrich homered twice for Miami.

Nicolino (1-0) was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans when right-hander Tom Koehler was scratched from his start because of neck and back soreness. He allowed just four hits in seven innings.

Dietrich hit a solo homer in the fourth off Reds starter Anthony DeSclafani and added a two-run shot in the seventh off left-hander Manny Parra for his first multi-homer game.

      Cardinals 10, Phillies 1

PHILADELPHIA -- Randal Grichuk's first multi-home-run game propelled St. Louis over Philadelphia.

Grichuck went 3-for-5 with three runs and four RBIs. Jason Heyward and Jhonny Peralta had three hits apiece and combined for three RBIs.

The victory moved St. Louis to a major-league best 22 games above .500. The Phillies, meanwhile, dropped to a major-league-worst 24 games below the break-even mark with their sixth loss in a row.

      Giants 6, Dodgers 2

LOS ANGELES -- Brandon Belt and Justin Maxwell homered as San Francisco cruised past the Dodgers for the fifth straight time and the ninth time in 11 meetings this season.

Tim Hudson allowed two runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings as the Giants

closed within a half-game of the first-place Dodgers in the National League West.

Joc Pederson hit his club-leading 18th home run for the Dodgers.

      Rays 4, Indians 1

CLEVELAND -- Evan Longoria hit a three-run home run in the first inning as Tampa Bay won for the eighth time in nine games and improved to 14-5 in June.

Right-hander Erasmo Ramirez had to leave the game after three innings with a strained groin, but Tampa Bay's bullpen was able to finish the job.

Cleveland right-hander Corey Kluber (3-9) pitched seven innings but took the loss. The nine losses match his total from last year, when he was 18-9 en route to winning the American League Cy Young Award.

      Braves 6, Mets 4

ATLANTA -- Andrelton Simmons matched a career high with four hits as Atlanta knocked New York out of first place in the National League East.

Simmons was 4-for-4 with two runs and one RBI as the bottom of the order produced nine of the Braves' 10 hits. A.J. Pierzynski added three hits, including a double and a triple, and scored three runs.

Mets catcher Travis d'Arnaud hyperextended his left arm in a collision with Pierzynski at the plate and had to leave the game. X-rays were negative.

      Yankees 14, Tigers 3

NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguez hit a three-run home run and drove in five runs while switch-hitter Carlos Beltran homered from both sides of the plate as New York rolled past Detroit.

A night after becoming the 29th player to reach 3,000 hits with a home run off Justin Verlander, Rodriguez drove in five runs for the first time since April 23, 2011 at Baltimore and first time at home since May 31, 2010 against Cleveland. He drove in runs with a fielder's choice and sacrifice fly in his first two plate appearances and hit his 668th career home run in New York's five-run third.

Beltran recorded his 37th multi-homer game in consecutive innings. He homered from the left side of the plate against right-hander Alfredo Simon (7-4) in the third and connected in the fourth from the right side off lefty Ian Krol.

      Royals 7, Red Sox 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kendrys Morales and Salvador Perez homered as Kansas City came from behind to defeat Boston.

The Royals batted around in a five-run fifth to take the lead after trailing 4-1. Morales' home run with Lorenzo Cain aboard put the Royals ahead to stay.

Right-hander Edinson Volquez (7-4) won his third straight start, giving up four runs on eight hits and two walks.

      Mariners 6, Astros 3

SEATTLE -- Seattle hit three home runs off Houston starter Dallas Keuchel to beat the Astros.

Nelson Cruz, Seth Smith and Mark Trumbo each hit a solo homer off Keuchel, who had allowed only four homers all season, to lift the Mariners to their second consecutive win while closing the gap in the American League West standings.

Keuchel (8-3) gave up season highs of five runs, four walks and three home runs in the loss. All four of his walks came in the second inning, during which he walked in two runs to give up an early 2-0 lead.

      Padres 8, Diamondbacks 1

PHOENIX -- Clint Barmes had three hits and two RBIs and right-hander Tyson Ross pitched his third career complete game in San Diego's victory over Arizona at Chase Field.

Ross (4-7) gave up four hits, tied a season high with nine strikeouts and also had an RBI triple in a four-run ninth inning while halting a three-game losing streak.

Clint Barmes singled, doubled twice, had two RBIs and scored twice for the Padres, who had lost five of six. They are 2-3 under interim manager Pat Murphy.

Over bettors sizing up Scherzer's next start after no-hitter

Max Scherzer is proving to be worth the $210 million that the Washington Nationals paid for him this offseason, as the pitcher tossed a no-hitter against the Pittsburgh Pirates Saturday.

Scherzer was on the final out and flirting with a perfect game when pinch-hitter Jose Tabata got hit on the elbow to snap the bid. The ace did end the day soon after while registering 10 K's in front of a sold-out Nationals Park.

However, going back to 1999, and excluding three collective no-no's involving more than one pitcher (Houston 2003, Seattle 2012, Philadelphia 2014), starters making their first appearance since their no-hitter are 22-17-1 Over/Under – 55 percent Over.

Chris Heston shocked the world earlier this season as the rookie for the San Francisco Giants when he threw a no-hitter against the New York Mets. In the following game, Heston was pulled after five innings and gave up three runs, though the game did go under.

Max Scherzer, who has now thrown two consecutive complete games while allowing only one hit, is expected to be back on the mound Saturday when the Nationals host the Philadelphia Phillies.

Game of the Day: Giants at Dodgers
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers (-170, 7.5)

The visiting San Francisco Giants can continue their dominance over the Los Angeles Dodgers and take over first place in the NL West on Sunday as they aim for a sweep of the three-game series. The Giants have won five straight and nine of 11 meetings against the Dodgers this season to move one-half game behind Los Angeles, which has dropped five of six overall.

“We have a half-game lead in the division, but (San Francisco) has basically gained seven games on us in the games we’ve played against them,” Dodgers manager Don Mattingly told reporters. “So obviously, that’s something that we have to be able to change.” Third baseman Justin Turner has continued his stellar play with home runs in back-to-back games, but the Dodgers need more production from first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, who is batting .222 with one home run this month. The Giants could be without left fielder Nori Aoki for Sunday’s series finale after the left fielder exited Saturday’s 6-2 win in the first inning after being hit on the right foot by a pitch from Carlos Frias. Aoki, who is listed as day-to-day after X-rays came back negative, ranks in the National League’s top 10 in hits, batting average and on-base percentage.

          TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE HISTORY: The Dodgers opened as -160 home favorites and have been bet to -170. The total has held steady at 7.5 runs.

          INJURY REPORT:

Giants - LF N. Aoki (doubtful Sunday, leg), RF H. Pence (15-day DL, wrist), SP M. Cain (15-day DL, forearm), SP J. Peavy (Mid June, back), 2B M. Scutaro (out for season, back).

Dodgers - RP J. Peralta (questionable Monday, neck), RP C. Hatcher (15-day DL, oblique), RP P. Rodriguez (15-day DL, elbow), RP P. Baez (60-day DL, shoulder), RP B. League (60-day DL, shoulder), LF C. Crawford (60-day DL, oblique).

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Tim Lincecum (7-3, 3.31 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Brett Anderson (2-4, 3.43)

Lincecum did just enough to earn the victory against Seattle on Tuesday, when he allowed two runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings. The two-time Cy Young award winner has not pitched past the sixth inning in any of his last five starts and has struggled with his control all season with 35 walks in 73 1/3 innings. Yasiel Puig is 10-for-17 against Lincecum, who is 11-8 with a 3.31 ERA in 29 games against the Dodgers, including 2-1 with a 2.65 ERA in three starts this season.

Anderson is winless in his last seven starts but pitched well on Tuesday and received a no-decision after holding Texas to two runs over a season-high eight innings. The 27-year-old owns a 1-1 record and 3.32 ERA in seven starts at home, and the Dodgers are 5-2 over that span. Anderson is 0-2 with a 6.00 ERA in three starts against the Giants this season, and he’s struggled to contain Brandon Crawford, who has five hits in six at-bats.

          TRENDS:

          * Giants are 5-0 in the last five meetings.
          * Over is 4-1-1 in the last six meetings in Los Angeles.
          * Dodgers are 1-6 in their last seven games versus a team with a winning record.
          *

CONSENSUS: Bettors are split almost exactly down the middle for this contest, with 52.21 percent of wagers backing the Dodgers at -160.

              Sunday, June 21

Orioles' Tillman does not like facing the Jays

Baltimore Orioles starter Chris Tillman has had his fair share of struggles against the Toronto Blue Jays, with his team dropping the last five contests against the sluggers from north of the border.

In fact Tillman has just four wins in 17 career starts against the Jays, posting a 5.23 ERA in those starts.

Tillman faces the Jays once again Sunday afternoon, where he is a slight +100 underdog for his matchup against right-hander Toronto (-108) Scott Copeland.

This ump helps Bronx Bombers live up to their name

Over bettors salivate when umpire Joe West is behind home plate for New York Yankees games, with the over going 14-3-1 the last 18 times he called balls and strikes for the Bronx Bombers.

That is exactly where West will be for Sunday's series finale against the Detroit Tigers, where the total currently sits at 7.5.

The Tigers send Anibal Sanchez (4.65 ERA, 7-6 O/U) to the mound, while the Yankees counter with Masahiro Tanaka (2.49 ERA, 2-5 O/U).

Under is red-hot when this team is a dog

The under is an incredible 21-5 in the last 26 games where the Tampa Bay Rays are listed as an underdog and that is exactly what they will be Sunday afternoon when they close out their three-game series with the Cleveland Indians.

The Rays and starter Alex Colome (5.14 ERA, 6-4 O/U) are currently +113 road dogs against Cleveland right-hander Cody Anderson, who makes his first career start. The total is sitting at 8.0 runs.

                Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Six bowl games that are played in places you wouldn't think would host bowls.......

-- Famous Idaho Potato Bowl-- Nothing says bowls like December in Boise.

-- Pinstripe Bowl-- Do kids like playing a bowl in New York City? Its cold!!!!

-- Popeyes Bahamas Bowl-- I'm gussing kids don't mind going to the Bahamas.

-- Boca Raton Bowl-- Best game each year in Florida Atlantic's home stadium.

-- Gildan New Mexico Bowl-- Why exactly is there a bowl in Albuquerque?

-- St Petersburg Bowl-- Get to see Tropicana Field with some people in it.

                **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday......

                13) Max Scherzer came within one out of a perfect game Saturday but did no-hit the Pirates, six days after he one-hit the Brewers in Miller Park. Here are Scherzer's last two starts, compared to Johnny Vander Meer's consecutive no-hitters in 1938:

                Vander Meer: 18 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 11 walks, 11 strikeouts
                Scherzer: 18 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 walk, 26 strikeouts

                12) Both Scherzer starts were day games; Vander Meer's second no-hitter came in the first night game ever, in Brooklyn's Ebbets Field.

                11) Quote of the Day: "I mean there is (a letdown), just because you're so close, one strike away from a perfect game. But to get a no-hitter in front of these fans, there's nothing better." Max Scherzer

                10) Golfer Jason Day fought off vertigo all day long, but wound up birdieing three of his final four holes to shoot 68 and share the lead at 4-under after three rounds of the US Open. Chambers Bay is a challenging course to walk and to do it with vertigo and still shoot under par is pretty amazing. Sunday night should be some good theater.

                9) Meanwhile the greens at Chambers Bay are taking a beating from the players who aren't tied for the lead. Ernie Els says four of the greens are actually dead; others have compared the greens to cauliflower, broccoli, the surface of the moon, or a dust surface. No matter what though, everyone is playing the same golf course.

                8) Strange trade in baseball last night; Arizona acquired an infielder named Phil Gosselin from Braves; in exchange, they unloaded injured pitcher Bronson Arroyo (and $10M he is still owed) but to get Atlanta to take that $10M obligation, Arizona also sent the Braves pitcher Touki Touissant, who was Arizona's first round draft pick LY and is doing pretty well this season in the Midwest League (2-2, 3.69 in seven starts).

Initital reaction to this trade greatly favored Atlanta's side. We'll see.

                7) As far as Royals fans getting all their players elected to the All-Star Game, I'll say this: be careful what you ask for. The All-Star break is four days long and it helps rest guys because the regular season can be a difficult grind.

Last year the A's had an awesome first half, had six guys in the All-Star Game, but the lack of a break took its toll in the second half of the season-- the A's faded terribly and barely made the playoffs. Some of those guys just plain wore out. Same thing could happen to Kansas City- four days off can re-energize guys.

                6) Nori Aoki played for the Royals last year but is on the Giants now; Royals' fans must be voting for him a lot too, since he has more All-Star votes than Marlins' OF Giancarlo Stanton. Aoki is pretty good but if you vote for him over Stanton, then you need to lose your voting rights.

                5) Seattle Mariners made hitting coach Howard Johnson the scapegoat for their dismal season, re-assigning HoJo while making franchise legend Edgar Martinez the new batting coach. Martinez has his name on a restaurant in Safeco Field, is considered the best DH ever. We'll see if the change energizes the Mariners' offense.

                4) I had never seen the ESPN special on the Fab Five; I'm watching it as I type this-- the sub guard Michigan had on that team was Rob Pelinka, who became a prominent player agent after his college days were done.

Not only is he an agent, he is Kobe Bryant's agent and used to be Kevin Durant's; he also shares a birthday with me, though he is a few years younger and a lot wealthier.

                3) How bad are this year's Phillies? Their starting pitcher Sunday is Adam Morgan, a lefty who posted a 0-6, 4.74 record in AAA this season. How does someone who has a 0-6, 4.74 record get promoted to the bigs? The 2015 Phillies are a freakin' trainwreck.

                2) Mets lost again in Atlanta, are now 3-15 in their last 18 road games and 56-102 in their history at Turner Field- their defense sucks, changes need to be made. Question is does the front office have the onions to do it? This should be a playoff team.

                1) Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there; many of you probably know I lost my dad last month and I miss him greatly- what I wouldn't give to watch golf and the baseball with him today. Tell your dad you love him today.

Preview: Liberty (3-3) at Dream (3-4)

                  Date: June 21, 2015 3:00 PM EDT

Neither the New York Liberty nor the Atlanta Dream have been impressive offensively this season, though the Liberty have looked particularly bad in back-to-back losses.

They'll try to get back on track by knocking off the Dream for a fifth straight time Sunday in Atlanta.

New York (3-3) has lost its past two games, 74-59 to Washington last Sunday and 80-63 to Indiana on Friday, shooting a combined 33.8 percent from the field. Tina Charles, who leads the team with 14.5 points per game, went 6 for 30 from the field. Charles is shooting 40.7 percent compared to 46.2 in 2014.

The Liberty haven't been able to consistently lean on any of Charles' teammates, either, as none are averaging better than 9.7 points. Sloppy play also has hurt, with 36 turnovers in the past two games leading to 45 points for their opponents.

New York, however, didn't struggle offensively in an 82-73 home win over Atlanta in both teams' season opener June 5. Charles had 17 points and 12 rebounds, and three other Liberty players scored 14-plus.

These clubs rank in the league's bottom half in scoring with the Dream averaging 70.9 points and New York 70.0.

Angel McCoughtry helped Atlanta (3-4) avoid a third straight loss Friday, hitting a 16-foot jumper at the buzzer in a 74-73 win over Chicago. McCoughtry, the WNBA's third-leading scorer with 19.4 points per game, finished with 18 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals.

It's not the first time McCoughtry has come through in the clutch for the Dream this season. She hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 27.6 seconds left in a 64-61 win at Washington on June 12.

McCoughtry scored a season-high 27 points against the LIberty.

Better play from Atlanta's bench was also crucial against the Sky. Led by 11 points from Cierra Burdick, the Dream reserves outscored Chicago's 23-16. They had been a minus-33 in the club's previous two games - double-digit losses - and New York's bench outscored Atlanta's 44-10 in the first meeting.

These are the league's two most mistake-prone teams with Atlanta averaging 19.7 turnovers and New York at 16.7. They combined for 34 turnovers earlier this month.

Dream forward DeLisha Milton-Jones sat out against Chicago and is questionable with a right Achilles injury.

New York holds a 19-10 series edge and is 9-6 at Atlanta.

Preview: Sun (5-1) at Sparks (0-3)

                    Date: June 21, 2015 5:00 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Sparks are one defeat away from their worst start in franchise history.

A visit by the Connecticut Sun would normally be welcome but not with Los Angeles severely short-handed.

The Sparks have taken six straight in the series with the rising Sun, who have won five in a row and are unbeaten on the road heading into Sunday's matchup.

Los Angeles has matched the worst winless start in team history at 0-3, also accomplished in 2010. Candace Parker, Kristi Toliver and Nneka Ogwumike all have yet to play for various reasons while leading scorer Alana Beard missed her first game with a left foot injury in Tuesday's 67-52 loss to Minnesota.

Connecticut (5-1) hasn't lost since a 73-68 defeat to Washington in its June 5 opener. The Sun haven't beaten the Sparks since a 79-70 victory Aug. 3, 2011.

They have to like their chances of ending that slide after snapping Phoenix's 22-game home win streak with Friday's 90-78 double-overtime victory.

Kelsey Bone scored a career-high 27 points and matched a personal best with 14 rebounds as Connecticut improved to 3-0 on the road. Bone had 10 points over the two overtimes.

The Sun weren't expected to contend after they lost Katie Douglas to retirement and Chiney Ogwumike and Allie Hightower to injuries. Now they have become the talk of the WNBA, and defeating the defending champions on the road only figures to add to their confidence.

"We had our opportunities, but Connecticut is a very good team," Mercury coach Sandy Brondello said. "They're number one in the East, they're playing together as a team, I thought they competed harder than us tonight."

The Sun, enjoying their longest win streak since a six-game run June 7-25, 2014, have been pushing the tempo to average 70.8 shots for the East's highest mark.

Los Angeles, meanwhile, averages 61.7 shots for the league's second-worst mark while averaging 55.7 points to rank last.

These matchups normally feature a battle between the Ogwumike sisters after each led her respective club with an average of 20.5 points in two 2014 meetings. These teams complete the season series in Connecticut on Friday.

Preview: Shock (5-1) at Lynx (5-1)

                      Date: June 21, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

The Minnesota Lynx have dominated the series with the Tulsa franchise, but the Shock showed in the season opener they've closed the gap on one of the league's powerhouses.

Seeking a sixth straight win, Tulsa looks to avenge its lone defeat of the season with a rare victory over the Lynx on Sunday night in a matchup between the Western Conference's top teams.

Minnesota (5-1) has finished first or second in the West each of the last four seasons while the Shock (5-1) have had one of the conference's worst two records in each of the past five. Not surprisingly, this series has been decisively one-sided, with the Lynx winning 20 of the last 21 meetings. Minnesota's lone blemish in that span was an 83-77 home defeat Aug. 16, 2013.

The Lynx won their sixth straight in the series on June 5, but it wasn't easy as they fell behind by 16 in the first quarter. Lindsay Whalen scored 11 of her 26 points in the fourth as the Lynx outscored the Shock 20-11 over the final 10 minutes for an 83-75 win.

Tulsa opened 5 of 6 from 3-point range before going 2 of 18 the rest of the way. The Shock have been buoyed by their 3-point shooting since that defeat, connecting on 42.9 percent during their five-game winning streak - the franchise's longest since 2008, when the team was in Detroit. The 2008 team also had a six-game run en route to winning the WNBA Finals.

Tulsa is one of the league's highest-scoring teams at 81.8 points per game, and the Lynx aren't far behind at 77.0. Minnesota, however, can also neutralize the Shock's outside shooting, as it has already proven.

The Lynx are holding opponents to 28.4 percent from 3-point range after limiting winless San Antonio to 3 of 15 in Friday's 74-59 victory. Minnesota improved to 46-3 when holding its opponent under 70 points.

Seimone Augustus had a game-high 18 points, Maya Moore scored 14 and Rebekkah Brunson and Asjha Jones added 12 apiece.

Moore finished with 23 points and Brunson grabbed 18 rebounds against the Shock two weeks ago.

Tulsa's Plenette Pierson had a team-high 18 points in that one and Riquna Williams finished with nine points on 3-of-11 shooting.

In Friday's 86-82 win at Washington, Pierson had 24 points and Williams scored 22 and hit 4 of 8 3-pointers.

Preview: Mercury (2-3) at Storm (2-3)

                        Date: June 21, 2015 9:00 PM EDT

The Phoenix Mercury captured their first season series from the Seattle Storm in five years last season, and did it in emphatic fashion.

The Mercury won all five matchups a year ago and these Western Conference rivals meet four times this year, beginning with Sunday's contest in Seattle.

This series has been streaky, with Phoenix (2-3) going 5-0 last year after Seattle took the previous five matchups.

The nature of this rivalry has changed since former University of Connecticut teammates Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird won't square off with Taurasi's decision to skip the season. This marks the sixth contest of Brittney Griner's seven-game suspension for a domestic violence incident.

The star power is being provided now by DeWanna Bonner, who is second in the league with 19.6 points per game despite 34.1 percent shooting. She fouled out with 21 points and nine rebounds in Friday's 90-78 double-overtime loss to Connecticut that snapped the Mercury's 22-game home win streak.

"She's carried us and she will carry us all season long, her role won't change when BG comes back, it'll actually make it a little easier for her," coach Sandy Brondello said. "But she's got that ability to score and also play great defense."

Seattle (2-3) is averaging 63.8 points for one of the league's lowest marks and those woes surfaced in Tuesday's 79-58 loss to Connecticut. The Storm shot 39.6 percent, marking the fourth straight game under 40 since a season-opening 51.6 percent mark in an 86-61 rout of Los Angeles on June 6.

"The way our team plays, everything we do is done as a team and we weren't moving well without the ball," coach Jenny Boucek told the Storm's official website. "We weren't available for each other the way that we need to. We weren't quick enough."

Crystal Langhorne is the only player averaging double figures in points at 10.0. Rookies Jewell Loyd and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis have struggled to shoot 24.5 percent and 38.5, respectively.

Phoenix will have little sympathy after committing a season-high 23 turnovers Friday. The Mercury averaged 11.8 through four games.

"The beauty of it, we have a game Sunday in Seattle and we have to make sure we bring our best effort and learn from our mistakes tonight," Brondello said.

WNBA on NBA TV: Previewing Sunday’s Four-Game Father’s Day Slate

With the NBA champion crowned, it’s time for #SummerHoops to take center stage. And the WNBA delivers this weekend with 11 games, including four on Sunday on NBA TV to cap Dads & Daughters Week across the league.

Here’s what to watch for in each matchup:

New York Liberty @ Atlanta Dream (3 PM ET)

                          Righting the Ship?

Atlanta’s slow start has been one of the early surprises of the 2015 season. The Dream have struggled on both ends, but their shaky offense — with a league-leading 19.3 turnovers per game entering the weekend — has been their undoing, especially for a team that banked on its continuity. Head coach Michael Cooper needs his championship-caliber offense to start flowing.

                          Starry Afternoon:

Two of the league’s top five scorers (as of 6/19) will face off in this matchup, and both bring a unique skill set to appreciate. No one is more dangerous in the open floor than Angel McCoughtry, while Tina Charles rules the post for the Liberty. They won’t match up directly, but Charles’ battle with fellow All-Star center Erika de Souza will be a highlight.
                          Bench Brigade:

When these two teams met on opening night, it wasn’t the stars but the bench that made the difference. New York’s subs outscored Atlanta’s 44-10 in the 83-72 victory, and depth is a major reason why the Liberty have returned to form while the Dream are still searching for answers.

Connecticut Sun @ Los Angeles Sparks (5 PM ET)

                          Sunny Days:

The Sun have been the feel-good story of the season thus far, rising to the top of the Eastern Conference despite missing injured star Chiney Ogwumike. Alex Bentley, Kelsey Bone and others have picked up the slack, and Connecticut boasts the league’s second-best defense entering the weekend.

                          Searching for a Spark:

In L.A. the absences have simply been too much to overcome. With Nneka Ogwumike and Candace Parker sidelined, the Sparks have struggled defensively and especially struggled to score the ball. They will need Alana Beard to return from a foot injury or Jantel Lavender and Erin Phillips to step into leading roles.

                          Gray Area:

It was difficult to know what to expect from former Duke star Chelsea Gray as she returned from a knee injury, but the guard has been electric in limited minutes through five games. Gray, who missed all of last season while rehabbing, is averaging 9.2 points, 1.4 assists and a steal in just 15.0 minutes per game — numbers that could skyrocket as she works her way back to full strength.

Tulsa Shock @ Minnesota Lynx (7 PM ET)

                          Sky vs. Maya:

When these two teams meet, the spotlight will always be on two of the league’s brightest stars. Of course, this is a matchup of the Lynx versus the Stars, but Diggins versus Moore in prime time is as good as it gets in the WNBA. Both will look to break out after a relatively quiet first two weeks.

                          Playoff Preview?

Tulsa’s rise appears to be happening even faster than expected, meaning Sunday’s game could very well serve as a playoff preview. Minnesota and Tulsa sit atop the Western Conference and have the type of balanced talent that should make them top contenders for the title come the fall. But are the Shock ready to take down the two-time champs on the road?

                          Dominating the Glass:

Don’t forget that the Shock are more than just run-and-gunners led by the dynamic backcourt of Diggins and Odyssey Sims. This team can just as effectively punish opponents in the paint, as it showed in a historic (record 30 offensive rebounds) performance against the Stars. Look for Courtney Paris, the league’s leading rebounder, to try to make her mark, and for Rebekkah Brunson to try to slow her down.

Phoenix Mercury @ Seattle Storm (9 PM ET)

                          Student vs. Teacher?

Games like this are invaluable for a growing team like Seattle to gain experience against a veteran-laden defending champ. The Mercury are vulnerable, but hanging with them will be a tough task for the Storm after blowout losses to the West’s other contenders, Minnesota and Tulsa, earlier this month.

                          On Guard:

In her seventh WNBA season, 30-year-old Leilani Mitchell has found new life in the Mercury’s system, averaging a career-high 12.3 points per game entering the weekend while lighting it up from downtown (league-leading 2.8 threes per game, 50% 3FG). Sue Bird, the ultimate vet, will have her hands full, and facing Mitchell will be another rookie test for No. 1 pick Jewell Loyd.

                          The Turnover Battle:

Youth vs. experience may show up most in the turnover column. Phoenix has coughed it up just 10.5 times per game while forcing 15.8 per game; Seattle has 67 turnovers compared to 55 forced. The Mercury know how to get the ball to their current dynamic duo of DeWanna Bonner and Candice Dupree in the right places at the right times.

Connecticut, Tulsa look to remain perfect ATS

Though the WNBA season is still young, two teams have proven to be making bank foe bettors early. The Tulsa Shock and Connecticut Sun are both 6-0 against the spread, 5-1 straight-up, as they enter Sunday's games.

Tulsa has the second ranked offense in the WNBA with the Shock averaging 81.8 points per game. The Shock are currently +9 when they travel to Minnesota to take on the Lynx.

The Sun have been covering thanks predominantly to their defense which has only allowed 66 ppg. Connecticut is currently +1 when they visit the 0-3 LA Sparks Sunday.
