    Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Six worst teams last year in turnover margin; did these teams have bad luck?

-15-- West Virginia-- They were 51-17 in six years before Dana Holgorsen became their coach- he is 28-23 in four years, 18-20 the last three years. .

-16-- Vanderbilt-- Franklin was somehow 24-15 at Vandy; they were 3-9 in their first year after he bolted for Penn State.

-16-- Michigan-- Has won one bowl game since 2007.

-17-- Washington State-- Coogs are 12-25 in first three years of the Leach era.

-18-- Eastern Michigan-- One non-losing season (6-6 in '11) in last decade.

-22-- Georgia State-- 3rd year in D-I; they're 1-22 the first two seasons.

    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.....

    13) One of the great myths of the NBA is that the league needs the Knicks to be good in order to be successful; want proof? This year's Cleveland-Golden State final got the NBA Finals' best TV ratings since 1998, Michael Jordan's last year in Chicago.

For better or worse, the NBA's appeal is built on popularity of individual stars, and in Lebron James/Steph Curry, the Finals had two of the league's most popular players.

    12) How have the Phillies not fired someone yet?

    11) Anyone who votes for Omar Infante for the All-Star team is either related to him or a complete jackass; he is batting .227 with three walks in over 100 ABs; for the love of god, Eric Sogard is better than Infante, yet Infante leads the balloting, because all the Royals are, thanks to their overzealous fans.

Jason Kipnis (.333, .408 OB%), Dustin Pedroia (.307, .369) would be good choices at second base for the AL, if you care about best players playing in the All-Star Game.

When MLB takes All-Star voting away from the fans (the way they did in the 50's when Cincinnati fans did a similar thing), Royals' fans better not complain.

    10) Which brings me to a pet peeve; the All-Star Game counting for anything other than a showcase of the game's best players. Having the outcome matter is so stupid, it is something you would laugh at if it was suggested by a friend in a bar.

    9) Baseball oddity from Tuesday; Nationals' catcher Wilson Ramos hit two homers in the Nats' 16-4 win at Tampa Bay, but both homers came against position players who were mopping up on the mound at the end of a bad game.

It was first time two position players pitched for the same team in a nine-inning game since July 20, 1990, when Montreal used Junior Noboa, Dave Martinez at Houston-- Martinez is now Joe Maddon's bench coach with the Cubs.

    8) It is funny listening to women in mainstream politicial media; they want Hillary Clinton (or any female) to become President so badly that they're basically coaching Hillary on how she should run her campaign. Luckily, she isn't listening.

    7) Early betting lines on college football have Florida Gators as home dogs in SEC games against both Tennessee and Ole Miss, suggesting that new Florida coach Jim McElwain has quite a rebuilding job ahead of him in Gainesville.

    6) There are three par 4's at the US Open this week that are 534+ yards. Par 4's.

    5) Only nine times has a golfer's first PGA Tour win been the US Open; last one to do it? Graeme McDowell, five years ago.

    4) Reason #4,235 why run differential is a stupid stat: Houston has a +37, Oakland has a +38 run differential. Astros are 10.5 games ahead of the A's, mainly because the dreadful Oakland bullpen is responsible for the A's 8-27 record in 1 or 2-run games.

    3) Why did the Clippers-Hornets announce a trade before the Finals were over? Why did the Clippers want Lance Stephenson?

    2) NBA teams used prime draft picks on Greg Oden and Joel Embiid, both of whom hardly played in college due to injury, but were high draft picks based mainly on potential, instead of any evidence that they could actually play well. This is why the smarter teams like San Antonio keep winning; they pick players who play well.

Oden was a complete bust and Embiid appears headed the same way; when you draft at the top of a draft, you can't completely whiff on a pick or you'll wind up at the top of the draft every year, like the 76ers pretty much do.

    1) Georgia-UCLA announced a home/home football series for 2025-26; I'll be a very happy guy if I am sitting in front of my TV watching those games, 11 years from now. I'll be happy if I'm anywhere watching anything 11 years from now........

              Bumgarner endures another tough-luck loss

SEATTLE -- Madison Bumgarner's brief bid with perfection ended in the fifth inning Wednesday when a controversial infield hit followed 13 consecutive outs.

One inning later, the questions about whether that infield single was actually a hit were silenced by two Seattle runs and a sudden 2-0 Mariners lead.

In the end, Bumgarner put together another solid outing, only to come up short. In his past two starts, the Giants have failed to score a run, losing 1-0 to the Arizona Diamondbacks last Friday, then 2-0 to Seattle.

"He was electric," manager Bruce Bochy said of Bumgarner in his latest outing. "He just had some bad luck."

Bumgarner retired the first 13 Seattle batters before Mariners designated hitter Mark Trumbo was awarded a hit on a bad-hop grounder that bounced off the chest of Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford in the fifth.

Pirates' stingy pitching extends win streak

The Pittsburgh Pirates edged the Chicago White Sox 3-2 Wednesday night for their seventh consecutive win, allowing two runs or fewer in each game.

In fact opponents are averaging a miniscule 0.71 runs per game against the Pirates during their win streak. The under is not surprisingly 6-1 over that stretch.

The Pirates close out their home-and-home with the Pale Hose Thursday night and are currently -140 road faves with a total at 7.5.

Padres' Myers to miss at least two months

OAKLAND, Calif. -- San Diego Padres center fielder/first baseman Wil Myers is scheduled to undergo surgery on his injured left wrist Thursday.

He is not expected to be able to resume baseball activities for eight weeks.

MLB roundup: Frazier's 13th-inning slam lifts Reds

CINCINNATI -- Todd Frazier's grand slam in the bottom of the 13th inning, his second homer of the night, lifted the Cincinnati Reds to an 8-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday at Great American Ball Park.

With two outs and the bases loaded in the 13th, Frazier launched Joakim Soria's 1-2 pitch an estimated 411 feet.

Detroit twice took the lead via homers, on first baseman Miguel Cabrera's three-run home run in the sixth, then again on pinch hitter Tyler Collins' solo shot in the eighth.

Frazier's game-ending shot was his 22nd homer of the season, tied for second in the major leagues.

              Yankees 2, Marlins 1

NEW YORK -- Michael Pineda took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, and New York held on for a victory over Miami.

Pineda pitched 6 2/3 innings and lost his bid at being involved in New York's 12th no-hitter when Christian Yelich opened the seventh by hitting a first-pitch fastball into the Yankees' bullpen.

Pineda gave up just the one hit while walking two and striking out nine.

              Mariners 2, Giants 0

SEATTLE -- Felix Hernandez outdueled Madison Bumgarner as Seattle topped San Francisco.

Hernandez threw eight scoreless innings, allowing four hits, before left-hander Charlie Furbush and new closer Carson Smith finished off the win. Hernandez (10-3) gave up four hits, struck out five and walked two while throwing 106 pitches. It marked the third time in 14 starts this season that Hernandez did not allow a run.

Bumgarner (7-4) surrendered four hits and struck out nine but gave up two runs while taking the tough-luck loss. The Giants have failed to score a run in either of his past two starts.

              Diamondbacks 3, Angels 2

PHOENIX -- Paul Goldschmidt had two hits, including his 19th home run, and Chase Anderson won his third consecutive decision as Arizona beat Los Angeles.

Goldschmidt homered in the first inning, and Anderson (3-1) limited the Angels to two runs in six innings.

Welington Castillo had two hits and a homer, and Yasmany Tomas added three hits, including his first triple as the Diamondbacks won for the fifth time in six games.

              A's 16, Padres 2

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Billy Butler went 4-for-5 with a three-run homer, Jesse Chavez gave up one run over seven innings with a career-high 11 strikeouts, and Oakland crushed San Diego.

The A's amassed a season-high 20 hits and set a new high for runs. Ben Zobrist had a single, a double and a triple, drove in three runs and scored three times for the A's, who won their season-high-matching fourth consecutive game. Billy Burns went 3-for-5 and scored three runs.

The Padres lost their fourth consecutive game. They are 0-3 since firing manager Bud Black and 0-2 under interim manager Pat Murphy.

              Rangers 5, Dodgers 3

LOS ANGELES -- Joey Gallo hit a two-run home run, Prince Fielder added a solo homer, and Wandy Rodriguez pitched five shutout innings to lead Texas past Los Angeles.

Fielder and third baseman Adam Rosales each had two of the Rangers' eight hits, with Fielder hitting his 11th home run of the season. Rougned Odor also drove in two runs.

Rodriguez (4-2) defused several potential scoring opportunities before leaving in the sixth inning. The 36-year-old veteran allowed three runs, nine hits and a walk while getting two strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.

              Rays 5, Nationals 0

WASHINGTON -- Steven Souza, Jr. had three hits, including a home run against his former team and four pitchers combined to allow just two hits as Tampa Bay beat Washington.

The first-place Rays have won five of their last six while the second-place Nationals have lost seven of their last 11 and are 6-10 this month.

Curt Casali had a career-high three hits with a homer for the Rays, who got a measure of revenge after allowing 23 hits in a 16-4 loss to Washington on Tuesday in Florida. It was the seventh shutout of the year for the Tampa Bay staff.

              Orioles 6, Phillies 4

PHILADELPHIA -- Chris Parmelee homered for the third time in two games as Baltimore beat Philadelphia.

Travis Snider also homered for Baltimore, which beat the Phillies for the third day in a row and won for the 11th time in 13 games in all.

Freddy Galvis hit a three-run homer for Philadelphia, which dropped its ninth straight.

              Blue Jays 8, Mets 0

TORONTO -- Kevin Pillar had a home run among his three hits and two RBIs and Danny Valencia added a three-run blast as Toronto defeated New York.

Drew Hutchison allowed four hits, one walk and no runs while striking out five in 5 2/3 innings to pick up the win and snap the Mets' three-game winning streak.

New York's Jon Niese allowed seven hits, four walks and three runs in seven innings for his fifth straight loss. Niese, who last won a game on May 9, struck out six.

              Braves 5, Red Sox 2

ATLANTA -- Nick Markakis tied a major league record for consecutive errorless games in the outfield, but it was at the plate where the right fielder came through for Atlanta.

Markakis, who has four RBIs in as many games, singled in the tie-breaking run in the seventh inning and the Braves defeated Boston.

Markakis has gone 392 games without an error, tying the record set by Darren Lewis from 1990 to 1994.

              Pirates 3, White Sox 2

CHICAGO -- Jung Ho Kang's first-inning home run helped give Pittsburgh a lead it never surrendered in a victory over Chicago.

Kang's two-run homer, his fourth of the season, provided an early 3-0 advantage as the Pirates went on to their seventh straight victory and third in-a-row over the White Sox. Chicago dropped its sixth straight.

Pittsburgh's Jeff Locke worked six innings for the victory while Chicago's John Danks (3-7) suffered his third straight loss.

              Cubs 17, Indians 0

CLEVELAND -- Kyle Schwarber went 4-for-5 in his first major league start, leading Chicago past Cleveland.

The Cubs exploded for 10 runs in the first three innings, and every Chicago player wound up with at least one hit in the team's 18-hit attack.

Kris Bryant hit a ninth-inning grand slam off Indians outfielder David Murphy, the second Cleveland position player to pitch in the inning. Ryan Raburn got two outs, and Murphy retired one batter. They combined to allow seven runs, all unearned.

              Twins 3, Cardinals 1

MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota got seven strong innings from Tommy Milone in a win over St. Louis.

Milone pitched seven innings, giving up one run on five hits and striking out five for his first victory since April 16. It was Milone's second consecutive outing of seven innings and third in seven starts overall this season.

Twins closer Glen Perkins entered with two outs in the eighth inning and got the final four outs for his league-leading 23rd save in 23 opportunities.

              Royals 10, Brewers 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Alcides Escobar drove in four runs and Joe Blanton threw five reliable innings in the Kansas City's victory over reeling Milwaukee.

Escobar broke the game open with a bases-clearing triple in a four-run eighth. His four RBIs matched a career best.

Lorenzo Cain contributed two extra-base hits, drove in a run and walked twice. He is 5-for-12 with two home runs and five RBIs in three games against the Brewers.

              Astros 8, Rockies 4

DENVER -- Houston continued an unusual sort of slugging perfection when it hit four home runs and beat Colorado.

It was the 26th multi-homer game of the season for the Astros, and they are a franchise-record 26-0 in such contests. The previous record was a 22-game streak in 1994.

Carlos Correa hit a two-run shot in the first inning, and Preston Tucker hit a solo homer in the fifth. Jake Marisnick added a homer in the sixth, and Chris Carter went deep in the ninth.

Pirates cruising in Cole's interleague starts

The Pittsburgh Pirates have a record of 5-0 in Gerrit Cole's last five interleague starts heading into Thursday's meeting with the Chicago White Sox.

Cole is 5-1 in seven career starts in interleague matchups, including 1-0 this season. The righty tossed six innings of three-hit ball en route to a 5-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers back in April.

The Pirates are 4-4 in eight interleague games so far this season. Cole and the Bucs are -129 faves against Jeff Samardzija and the Pale Hose (+119).

Hot under umpire Rackley calling this game Thursday

One of the league's hottest umpires, David Rackley, will be calling Thursday's game between the Houston Astros and Colorado Rockies at Coors Field Thursday afternoon.

Rackley has an Over/Under record of 2-7-3 on the season. That mark is second best in the bigs among umpires with at least nine games worked behind home plate.

Furthermore, the under has gone 5-0-2 in Rackley's last seven games behind home plate.

There has been an average of 6.42 runs scored per game in his appearances with 14.6 strikeouts and 5.8 walks per game. He has a strike percentage of 63.81.

Padres won't like seeing Hamari behind home plate

The San Diego Padres are 0-5 in their last five ball games with umpire Adam Hamari working behind home plate. Hamari will be behind the dish calling pitching in the meeting between the Friars and Oakland A's Thursday afternoon.

Home teams have the slight edge when Hamari is calling pitches, posting a record of 8-6 on the season. There has been an average of 8.86 runs scored in his games so far this season, with the Over/Under count coming in at 9-5.

Ian Kennedy is probable for the visiting Padres (+146), while the A's are expected to counter with Kendall Graveman (-159). Oddsmakers have the total at 8.

Chance of rain at Citizens Bank Park

There is a 44 percent chance of rain and a five mile per hour wind blowing out to left field at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, where the Phillies host a matinee game against the Baltimore Orioles.

The Orioles are currently -160 road favorites and send right-hander Bud Norris (2-4, 8.29 ERA) to the mound to take on righty Sean O'Sullivan (1-5, 5.08 ERA) of the Phillies. The total currently sits at 8.5 runs.

Road woes continue for struggling Red Sox

Thanks to a 5-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field Wednesday, the Boston Red Sox have continued their dreadful play away from home. The Sox have now lost seven-straight games on the road and 11 of their past 12.

The BoSox will finish up a small two-game set in Atlanta Thursday and head to Kansas City for three games against the Royals before heading back to Boston.

Clay Buchholz will try to turn things around for the Red Sox, who are -115 road faves Thursday. The Braves will count with Shelby Miller.

Twins heating up for Under bettors

The Under has cashed in four consecutive Minnesota Twins' games heading into their afternoon tilt with the St. Louis Cardinals Thursday.

The Twins are finishing up a home-and-home set with the Cardinals with two games at Busch Stadium finishing under the total earlier this week, and Wednesday's opener at Target Field cashing for Under bettors as well.

Even though the clubs have not met frequently over the years, the Under has gone 12-0-1 in the past 13 meetings between the Cards and Twins.

Jaime Garcia is slated to take the mound against Mike Pelfrey Thursday afternoon, and oddsmakers have a total of 8 on the board.

Game of the Day: Rays at Nationals
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Rays at Washington Nationals (+118, 7)

Steven Souza Jr. is only hitting .222, but his power numbers have provided quite a boost in his first season with the Tampa Bay Rays. Souza, who has reached base eight times in 13 at-bats during the series and belted his team-leading 13th homer Wednesday, looks to punish his former team again when the Rays visit the Washington Nationals on Thursday.

Souza is the only Tampa Bay player with more than seven blasts and he went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored in the 5-0 victory Wednesday. The American League East-leading Rays send All-Star Game candidate Chris Archer to the mound Thursday in an attempt to win the four-game, home-and-home interleague set after taking two of the first three. Washington fell to 6-13 in its last 19 contests and welcomes back right-hander Doug Fister from the disabled list to oppose Archer. Bryce Harper is 13-for-28 in his last eight games for the Nationals, who managed two hits Wednesday after recording 23 just 24 hours earlier.

Oddsmakers opened the Nats +108 before adjusting to +118. The total opened at 7.

                  INJURY REPORT:
                  Rays - RP Andrew Bellatti (DL-Shoulder), 1B James Lonely (Out-Finger) Nationals - N/A

                  PITCHING MATCHUP:
Rays RH Chris Archer (7-4, 2.00 ERA) vs. Nationals RH Doug Fister (2-2, 4.31)

Archer allowed three runs over seven innings last time out against the Chicago White Sox while extending his unbeaten streak to seven games with a no-decision. The North Carolina native boasts 113 strikeouts – 51 in his last five outings – over 90 innings and has held opponents to a .196 batting average in 2014. Harper is 1-for-2 with a walk against Archer, who is 5-0 on the road with a 0.51 ERA but lost his only career meeting with Washington.

Fister (forearm) returns to the rotation for the first time in month after pitching six shutout innings while allowing two hits and striking out four at Double-A Harrisburg in his last rehab start on Friday. The 31-year-old California native yielded one earned run or fewer in three of seven starts this season, but has given up 46 hits in 39 2/3 frames overall. Evan Longoria is 3-for-10 versus Fister, who is 2-3 with a 2.88 ERA in six appearances (five starts) against the Rays.

CFL season betting preview: How to bet the East Division

The 2015 season will begin on Thursday night, with the Montreal Alouettes hosting the Ottawa Redblacks. We didn't see a single team in the East Division finish with a winning record last year, and the bookmakers are expecting the West to be superior again this season. According to the Grey Cup odds, Hamilton is the front runner in a jam-packed East.

Here's a look at how the teams in the East Division stack up entering the new campaign.

                    EAST DIVISION

                    Hamilton Tigers-Cats (2014: 9-9 SU, 9-9 ATS)

Odds to win Grey Cup: +660

Why bet the Tiger-Cats: Hamilton lost to Calgary in the Grey Cup last year, and finished first in the division during the regular season despite a .500 record. The Ti-Cats appear to be in good hands with a young quarterback in Zack Collaros, who comes off an outstanding rookie campaign. The 26 year old showed steady improvement throughout his first season as a starter, and his coach is expecting him to be even better in 2015. “He’s got some Doug Flutie in him,” said head coach Kent Austin, comparing him to one of the greatest quarterbacks the league has ever seen.

Why not to bet the Tiger-Cats: They were terrible on the road last year, winning just two of their nine games away from Tim Hortons Field. They might struggle to improve on that record with a young defense in 2015, and they'll have a tough time replacing Delvin Breaux, who left for the NFL. C.J. Gable, Nic Grigsby and Mossis Madu gave them depth in the backfield last year, but nobody stepped up as a true No. 1 running back.

Grey Cup Outlook: Good as long as Collaros can stay healthy.

                    Montreal Alouettes (2014: 9-9 SU, 9-9 ATS)

Odds to win the Grey Cup: +820

Why bet the Alouettes: Montreal finished last season winning eight of its last 10 games, and won its first playoff game in a 50-17 rout of the B.C. Lions. The Als are deep at running back with Brandon Whitaker, Brandon Rutley, Rainey and Logan, and they signed receivers Fred Stamps, Nik Lewis and Sam Giguere. The defense remains a strength, with Chip Cox and John Bowman both resigning.

Why not to bet the Alouettes: Jonathan Crompton took the team to the playoffs in 2014, but GM Jim Popp isn't convinced he has what it takes to be the starting quarterback. “Crompton won the job last year. The bottom line is can we win with him?” said Popp. Rakeem Cato led the Als in passing in their first preseason game, a 26-9 win over Ottawa. Brandon Bridge threw for 52 yards and a TD, while Crompton was just 2-of-6 for 17 yards. Who will start on opening night is anybody's guess.

Grey Cup Outlook: Fair. If they can find themselves a capable quarterback, they should be as good as anybody in the East.

                    Toronto Argonauts (2014: 8-10 SU, 7-11 ATS)

Odds to win the Grey Cup: +950

Why bet the Argos: While the Argos will begin the season with Trevor Harris filling in for Ricky Ray at quarterback, he'll have a stout offensive line protecting him. He's looked capable so far in the preseason. The receiving corps looks strong with Chad Owens and Andre Durie returning and a handful of veterans all competing for a roster spot. Rookie Tori Gurley impressed with seven catches for 188 yards and a TD in his first appearance of the preseason.

Why not to bet the Argos: Toronto hopes to make improvements on the defensive side of the ball, but it has a long way to go as its secondary allowed the most touchdowns in the CFL last season. The Argos’ success will likely depend on how Ricky Ray recovers from offseason shoulder surgery, and we saw last season how Travis Lulay struggled for B.C. coming off the same injury. Top it all off with a nightmare of a schedule to start the season, and the Argos have plenty to overcome.

Grey Cup Outlook: Poor. There are too many question marks surrounding this team, and if Ray has any setbacks returning from injury, the season will likely be a disaster.

                    Ottawa Redblacks (2014: 2-16 SU, 7-11 ATS)

Odds to win the Grey Cup: +3550

Why bet on the Redblacks: Ottawa added a lot of star power on offense heading into this season, with Maurice Price, Ernest Jackson and Greg Ellingson coming into to bolster the receiving corps. Ellingson has established chemistry with veteran quarterback Henry Burris from their time together in Hamilton. Chris Williams returns after spending the last two seasons in the NFL, and he'll give them a boost on offense as well as special teams.

Why not to bet on the Redblacks: While improvement appears inevitable for Ottawa, its got a long way to go after winning just two games all of last season. The prognosis on the defensive side of the ball is a lot less positive than it is on offense, and there’s a lot riding on the 40-year-old arm of Burris.

Grey Cup Outlook: Poor. This team should be vastly improved but they've still got a long way to go before they can expect to complete with the best teams in the league.
