NBA notebook: LeBron James faces another decision
Jun 17, 2015
Fans and front-office personnel are saving the date: June 29 is the day LeBron James can opt out of his contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
James returned to Northeast Ohio in July 2014, leaving the Miami Heat four years after bolting Cleveland in an excruciating public departure aired by ESPN and titled "The Decision."
"I haven't thought about next season at all," James said. "My family is happy. That makes my job a lot easier. For the fans, I go out and try to just leave it all on the floor and hope it's enough."
"He has become a great leader of this team," coach David Blatt said. "He should be proud of what he did this year. I thought he had one of the best seasons of his career, and I'm glad that I could be one of the guys that helped him do that."
---The NBA champion Golden State Warriors reportedly plan to trade forward David Lee, whose playing time no longer matched his contract.
The team and player are working to find a new team for Lee, ESPN reported Wednesday.
Lee, a former All-Star who had become a bench player, is set to make $15.4 million next season at the end of his six-year, $79.5 million contract.
The Warriors would like to clear salary-cap room to re-sign restricted free agent Draymond Green, who replaced Lee in the starting lineup.
---The 2015 NBA Finals is the highest-rated NBA Finals ever on ABC, based on market ratings from Nielsen.
The Warriors beat the Cavaliers 105-97 in Game 6 on Tuesday night, securing the franchise's fourth championship and first in 40 years.
The six-game series averaged a 13.9 overnight rating, which is up 31 percent from a 10.6 last year (Miami-San Antonio).
---Charlotte Hornets guard Gerald Henderson exercised his player option for the 2015-16 season.
Henderson, selected by Charlotte with the 12th overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, played in a team-high 80 games (72 starts) last season and averaged 12.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 28.9 minutes per game.
In six seasons with Charlotte, Henderson has played in 391 games with averages of 12.0 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 27.5 minutes.
---The Chicago Bulls named San Antonio Spurs assistant Jim Boylen as associate head coach Wednesday on Fred Hoiberg's new staff.
Hoiberg wanted Boyle for his defensive coaching prowess and to help him make the move up from college. Hoiberg left Iowa State to become the Bulls' 19th coach on June 1.
Boylen, 50, comes to Chicago with 29 years of coaching experience, including 17 years of service in the NBA. He spent last two seasons on Gregg Popovich's staff in San Antonio.
