    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six most improved teams in 2015, according to Phil Steele's great magazine.........

    6) Temple-- 19 starters back; 15 seniors on defensive two-deep depth chart.

    5) Indiana-- Add RB Howard from UAB; he should be a big help.

    4) Pitt-- Narduzzi is Pitt's fifth head coach in this decade; unreal.

    3) Michigan-- I heard they hired a new coach-- is this true????

    2) Akron-- Went 5-7 LY despite being favored in nine of 12 games.

    1) Miami Fla-- Even with only one senior projected to start on offemse.

    **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

    13) Last winter, the Padres jacked their payroll up from $90,636,600 LY to this year's $108,387,033; that increase brought expectations, which a 32-33 record didn't satisfy, so Monday, after 8.5 years in charge, manager Bud Black got fired.

    12) Angels won the 2002 World Series; three of Mike Scioscia's coaches from that year started this season as big league managers-- two have already been fired-- Ron Roenicke in Milwaukee and now Black (Joe Maddon is the third). Whether it is fair or not, the manager takes the hit for an underachieving team. Just the way it is.

    11) Padres GM AJ Preller is another Ivy League alum (Cornell) who has become the head of a big league organization; he was a frat brother of Texas GM Jon Daniels while at Cornell. Here is part of Preller's quote about the firing........

"At the end of the day this was the direction we wanted to go. I've evaluated him (Black) overall for eight months when I was looking at everything. I've seen inconsistencies, ups and downs. This team is not bottoming out or playing poorly. Just too much inconsistency. We have not played to the level we are capable of."

In other words, Preller is saying "I did MY JOB. They're underachieving!!!"

Elsewhere in this crazy world of ours.......
    10) White Sox scored zero or one run in 14 of their first 62 games.

    9) Anthoy Rizzo has already been hit by 15 pitches this year; he crowds the plate.

    8) Ichiro Suzuki is 34-115 with seven walks (one HBP) against John Lackey; the 123 plate appearances are the most of any active hitter against any active pitcher.

    7) Mets promoted Danny Muno to the majors five times this year and sent him back down five times; we talked few weeks ago how Muno's dad played football with Joe Montana in college-- my friend Joe from Yorktown Heights let me know that Muno's grandfather once served as Montana's agent-- now that must've been a good gig.

    6) Glad to see Chris Davis bunt for a hit against the shift last night; might've been the hardest bunt ever-- it landed on the chalk, five feet past third base. Joey Votto also bunted for a hit against the shift last night--- good for them.

    5) Cuban defector Yasmany Tomas can really hit, but his agent did him a disservice by hooking him up with an NL team-- he has no position to play. He should be with an American League team, where he could DH every day.

    4) Last two nights, I've heard TV announcers bash the A's over the Donaldson trade; Keith Hernandez did it last night, someone else on Sunday, can't remember who, since I watch too much TV. Here are the details of that trade........

Firstly, Donaldson is a bus driver, a great player who can "drive the bus" to wins; he helped the A's make the playoffs three years in a row, but he was getting expensive and expensive doesn't fly in Oakland, no matter how good you are. On November 28, A's traded Donaldson to Toronto for these four humans..........

-- Brett Lawrie is no Donaldson, but he's done OK at third base this year. hitting .272.
-- Kendall Graveman is 3-3, 4.22 in nine starts for Oakland, but has a 2.20 ERA in his last five starts and looks like a keeper.
-- Sean Nolin has a 1.77 ERA n his first five AAA starts this year; he had one dreadful start in the big leagues back in 2013.
-- Franklin Barreto is a 19-year old shortstop hitting .263 in A ball.

    3) Graveman/Nolin are projected as big league starting pitchers; ask someone who is a Red Sox fan if starting pitching is important. Pitching is more important than having a great third baseman- you cannot win without high quality pitching.

So my point is this: TV nitwits can jump on the pile and bash the A's, but they are strapped by payroll concerns-- the only way they can stay competitive is to stockpile young pitchers, its the only chance they have. This year is a disaster but maybe next year won't be- they need to get some more prospects when they sell off older players like Zobrist, Clippard and Kazmir in the next six weeks. It is their reality.

    2) Home plate umpire Marty Foster got drilled in the jaw by a foul ball last night and had to leave the Toronto-Mets game in the third inning; really a vicious blow that KO'd him after he finished that half inning. Umpires take a beating behind the plate; so do catchers. Hopefully Mr Foster will be back on the field soon.

    1) Freddie Freeman was 30 for his first 68 with runners in scoring position; wow!!!.

Longoria leaves game after hit by pitch

Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria left the Rays' game against the Washington Nationals Monday night in the sixth inning after he was hit on the left wrist by a pitch from reliever Taylor Hill.

Longoria had trainers checking the injury and walked to first before going into the dugout, He was replaced by pinch-runner Nick Franklin.

Longoria missed three games last week because of soreness in the same wrist.

There was no immediate word on the severity of the injury.

Royals bump Ventura's start to Friday

MILWAUKEE -- Kansas City right-hander Yordano Ventura threw a 35-pitch bullpen session Monday at Miller Park, but he won't make his next scheduled start, manager Ned Yost announced Monday.

Ventura was slated to face the Brewers on Wednesday back in Kansas City but instead will take the mound Friday against the Boston Red Sox. The change gives the 23-year-old two extra days to recover from numbness in his right hand that forced him from his last start after just three innings.

"What we're doing is playing it safe and not pushing it," Yost said before the Royals beat the Milwaukee Brewers 8-5.

Marlins' Fernandez eyes July 2 return

MIAMI -- Miami Marlins right-hander Jose Fernandez, an All-Star and the National League Rookie of the Year in 2013, announced Monday that he will make his return to the majors July 2 in a home game against the San Francisco Giants.

Fernandez has been out since May 12, 2014 due to Tommy John elbow surgery.

"I feel ready to pitch in the major leagues," Fernandez said. "Everything feels normal."

Fernandez, 22, went 12-6 with a 2.19 ERA in 28 starts as a rookie. Last year, he was 4-2 with a 2.44 ERA in eight starts before getting hurt.

In two rehab starts this month for Class A Jupiter, Fernandez is 0-1 with a 5.63 ERA.

Brewers' Gomez back to bench with leg ailment

MILWAUKEE -- With his right leg bothering him, Carlos Gomez was scratched from the Milwaukee Brewers' starting lineup before batting practice Monday afternoon.

Gomez missed three consecutive games because of a sore right hip before returning to action Saturday. He went a combined 1-for-8 with four strikeouts Saturday and Sunday, so manager Craig Counsell decided to rest the speedy outfielder.

"The goal is to get Carlos at 100 percent," Counsell said. "I don't think the last couple days he's 100 percent. Just trying to get him closer to 100 percent so we can (have) the Carlos that we know.

"I thought we'd just take a couple days and try to get him there."

Gomez could return to action Wednesday, when the Brewers open a two-game series at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City -- an American League park, which would allow Gomez to serve as the designated hitter, but Counsell wasn't ready to commit to that theory.

Giants' home skid nearly a franchise record

SAN FRANCISCO -- The slumping San Francisco Giants made the wrong kind of history Monday night at AT&T Park with a 5-1 loss to Seattle.

The Giants lost their ninth consecutive home game, their longest home skid since a franchise-record 11-game losing streak in 1940 at the Polo Grounds in New York. The Giants have been outscored 45-17 during the losing streak at AT&T.

Phils' bats go missing on dreadful road trip

BALTIMORE -- Philadelphia manager Ryne Sandberg sat in his quiet offense after his team was shut out for a second consecutive game Monday and tried to talk about why the Phillies lost their seventh in a row.

"We're just having trouble swinging the bats and getting some things going and had a tough road trip on that note," he said. "We need to swing the bats, and we've had problems scoring runs."

Orioles left-hander Wei-Yin Chen threw eight strong innings in a 4-0 shutout of the Phillies.

Philadelphia fell to 0-7 on an road trip that ends Tuesday at Camden Yards, following sweeps in Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. The Phillies were shut out in three of the past four, and they have only 11 runs overall on the trip.

MLB roundup: Mets stun Blue Jays, snap Toronto streak

NEW YORK -- Wilmer Flores' two-out RBI single Monday night capped a stunning 11th-inning comeback by the New York Mets, who snapped the Toronto Blue Jays' 11-game winning streak with a 4-3 win at Citi Field.

The Mets have won four of five games. Hansel Robles earned the win despite allowing the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th when Ezequiel Carrera walked, went to third on a single by Chris Colabello and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dioner Navarro.

Jose Bautista hit solo homers in the first and ninth for the Blue Jays. His first home traveled an estimated 449 feet.

          A's 9, Padres 1

SAN DIEGO -- Stephen Vogt hit a grand slam and drove in five runs and starter Jesse Hahn held his former team to one run on three hits over 6 2/3 innings as Oakland routed San Diego.

Earlier in the day, the Padres fired manager Bud Black, ending the second-longest managerial reign in franchise history. Black had managed the Padres since the start of the 2007 season.

Bench coach Dave Roberts will manage the Padres until an interim manager from within the organization is named later this week.

          Royals 8, Brewers 5

MILWAUKEE -- Alcides Escobar singled twice and drove in a pair of runs, and Lorenzo Cain hit a two-run homer to lead Kansas City over Milwaukee.

Cain also finished with two hits, as did Salvatore Perez, Alex Rios and Omar Infante.

In all, the Royals collected 13 hits off four Milwaukee pitchers but did most of their damage against struggling starter Kyle Lohse.

          Mariners 5, Giants 1

SAN FRANCISCO -- Taijuan Walker pitched seven strong innings, Kyle Seager hit a solo home run, and Seattle defeated San Francisco.

The Giants lost their ninth straight home game, the longest home skid in franchise history since an 11-game losing streak in 1940 at the Polo Grounds in New York. The Giants have been outscored 45-17 during their losing streak at AT&T.

The hard throwing Walker, who turns 23 in August, allowed one run on seven hits. He struck out six, walked none and threw 98 pitches.

          Diamondbacks 7, Angels 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Robbie Ray threw seven scoreless innings and Paul Goldschmidt had three hits, including a three-run homer, leading Arizona past Los Angeles.

It was the fourth win in a row for the Diamondbacks, who got another strong performance from their starting pitcher. Ray became the third Diamondbacks pitcher in the past four games to take a no-hitter into the sixth. Chase Anderson and Allen Webster each did it over the weekend against the Giants.

Ray's no-hitter was broken up in the sixth inning on Daniel Robertson's two-out single.

          Rays, 6 Nationals 0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Tampa Bay got a fourth straight impressive start from Erasmo Ramirez, who threw six shutout innings and dominated Washington.

The Rays had their last eight wins all come by one or two runs. Ramirez earned his sixth win in the last seven starts. He's allowed just three runs in his last four starts, over a combined 23.1 innings.

The Nationals saw Gio Gonzalez last just 3 1/3 innings for his shortest outing of the season, leaving with a 5-0 deficit in the fourth inning.

          Tigers 6, Reds 0

DETROIT -- Anibal Sanchez tossed his first complete-game shutout in more than two years, and J.D. Martinez homered for the third consecutive game as Detroit cruised past Cincinnati.

Sanchez allowed just two hits and didn't walk a batter while striking out seven for the Tigers. His last shutout was a one-hitter against Minnesota on May 24, 2013. He has not given up a run in his last 20 2/3 innings.

Detroit's Miguel Cabrera had two hits and drove in two runs, and Yoenis Cespedes added two hits, scored a run and knocked in another.

          Orioles 4, Phillies 0

BALTIMORE -- Matt Wieters broke the game open with a three-run homer in the sixth, and Wei-Yin Chen threw eight shutout innings as Baltimore handed Philadelphia its seventh straight loss.

The Orioles now have won nine of their last 11. Philadelphia has dropped 17 of its last 20 games.

Chen won a second consecutive start. He gave up only a bunt single through six innings and allowed only four hits in a dominating performance.

          Indians-Cubs, postponed

CHICAGO -- Heavy rainfall drenched Wrigley Field and a funnel cloud was spotted on the city's fringe as Chicago and Cleveland attempted to open a two-game interleague series.

While the most threatening weather appeared to pass by 5:30 p.m., the rain never stopped and the game was called around 5:40 p.m.

Cubs officials said the game will be made up Aug. 24, an open date for both teams.

          Marlins 2, Yankees 1

MIAMI – Derek Dietrich, starting his first game of the season, hit a tiebreaking solo home run in the seventh inning, leading Miami over New York.

Dietrich, who was promoted from Triple-A on Friday to serve as a utility infielder, started at third base in place of the injured Martin Prado. Dietrich doubled and scored Miami's first run and then pulled his home run to right on a 2-0 pitch.

Miami starter Tom Koehler, a native of the Bronx, New York, earned the win in his first time facing the Yankees. He lasted seven innings, allowing just three hits, two walks and one run.

          Pirates 11, White Sox 0

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh scored five runs before Chicago starter Carlos Rodon recorded an out and Francisco Liriano pitched eight shutout innings to lead Pirates in the rout.

Pittsburgh pounded out 11 runs on 18 hits.

Liriano yielded only two hits and walked one. He struck out a career-high 12.

          Braves 4, Red Sox 2

BOSTON — Williams Perez didn't allow an earned run for the second straight start as Atlanta snapped a six-game losing streak against Boston.

The rookie was pitching for the third time in six days after tossing a scoreless inning and recording a save on Saturday in the Braves' 5-3 win over the New York Mets.

Perez gave up five hits, all singles, and issued two walks while recording two strikeouts over six innings to lower his ERA to 2.41 for Atlanta, which won at Fenway for the first time since 2012.

          Rangers 4, Dodgers 1

ARLINGTON, Texas – Texas' Yovani Gallardo worked seven scoreless innings and the offense broke through for four runs in the sixth in a victory over Los Angeles.

Gallardo's outing extended the streak of quality starts by Texas pitchers to 11 games, a club record and the longest stretch in the majors this year.

Gallardo, who has a 2.66 ERA over his last seven starts, allowed four hits and struck out four.

          Astros 6, Rockies 3

HOUSTON -- George Springer provided insurance with his second home run of the night in the seventh inning and Houston's bullpen nailed down its first save in nearly two weeks in a win against Colorado.

After Colorado clawed to within 5-3 on an RBI double by Nick Hundley in the top of the seventh inning, Springer responded by belting his 10th home run leading off the bottom of the frame.

The Astros last recorded a save on June 2 against the Baltimore Orioles. During the ensuing stretch, Houston endured a seven-game losing skid before recording a pair of blowout wins over the Seattle Mariners over the weekend.

          Cardinals 3, Twins 2

ST. LOUIS -- John Lackey threw eight solid innings to pace St. Louis to its fourth consecutive win.

Lackey gave up five hits and two runs, walked one and fanned six. Working with six days of rest after his Sunday start against Kansas City was rained out, Lackey threw 100 pitches, 74 for strikes. He was hit hard at Colorado on June 8.

While Minnesota suffered its sixth loss in seven games, the Cardinals upped their home record to a major-league-best 25-7.

                Thunderstorms in Arlington Tuesday

According to weather forecasts, there are thunderstorms expected at Globe Life Park in Arlington when the Texas Rangers host the Los Angeles Dodgers Tuesday evening.

The storms are expected throughout the day and into the early innings of the game.

                Mariners add some needed speed

SAN FRANCISCO -- The Seattle Mariners added some much-needed speed to their arsenal Monday, calling up outfielder James Jones from Triple-A Tacoma.

Jones stole 27 bases in 108 games for the Mariners last season, the most by any rookie in the American League and the second most by a rookie in franchise history.

"A lot of different factors went into it, but Jones brings speed, defense in the outfield, hopefully a spark in a different way for us," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said of the move before his team's 5-1 victory against the Giants. "He's capable of stealing bases when we need 'em, even when you know he's going. We like that idea, particularly here in a National League ballpark and hopefully it pays off for us.
