    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Former Auburn HC Gene Chizik is the new defensive coordinator at UNC.

-- Christopher Negron has played seven positions for the Reds this year; every one but pitcher and catcher.

-- Nolan Ryan threw seven no-hitters.....to seven different catchers.

-- Phil Hellmuth won his 14th World Series of Poker bracelet this week.

-- NJIT's basketball team gets into the Atlantic Sun; they had been the only team in the country playing as an independent.

-- Eagles released all-pro guard Evan Mathis, who was complaining about contract stuff; Chip Kelly is going to be under quite the microscope this season.

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here........

    13) I'm concerned the concept of free speech is slipping away in our country. There are people risking their lives to protect our freedoms. Tolerance of all our opinions is important, even if some of those opinions are offensive to us.

    12) Tie game Monday night, top 7th, two out. Bryce Harper tries to bunt a 1-2 pitch for a hit, but fouls it off and strikes out. No bueno, especially playing in the Bronx, where popups to rightfield are home runs. Nationals manager Matt Williams just shook his head in the dugout.

    11) RIP Vincent Musetto, 74, former editor for the NY Post, the brilliant writer of attention-grabbing headlines, the best of which was........

"Headless man in Topless Bar" from April, 1983.

Really, he put that on a headline. RIP, sir.

    10) Could we move Giancarlo Stanton up in the order? Batting Stanton 4th, Marcell Ozuna 5th could cost them both an at-bat every game- they're the two best hitters in the Miami lineup. You generally bat your best hitter third, no?

    9) If the Braves knew the Nationals/Mets would both underachieve, think they still would've traded Craig Kimbrel to the Padres? Atlanta would be in first place if they still had Kimbrel- their bullpen has been hideous.

    8) A's 7, Rangers 0-- Was 1-0 game until bottom of 8th inning; Billy Burns made two tremendous catches in CF-- here are links to those catches, one of which robbed Delino DeShields of a one-out triple.
    -- 6th-inning catch
    -- both catches

    7) Braves committed catchers' interference yesterday with bases loaded, first time that happened since July 9, 2011.

Odd fact: Before Thursday, three of last five catchers' interference with bases loaded came with Hideki Matsui at the plate. Go figure.

    6) Also in that game, Padres' Cory Spangenburg bunted a ball that actually bounced over the pitchers' head- ground in Atlanta must be very hard.

    5) Seattle Mariners scored more than three runs once in their last 15 games. Oy.

    4) Former White House press secretary Robert Gibbs now works as a Executive Vice President and Global Chief Communications officer for McDonald's. Gibbs was once the soccer goalie at NC State. Why does McDonald's need a corporate hotshot with such a long title?

    3) Boston College/North Carolina both play two I-AA teams this year but don't play each other, despite being ACC rivals; BC-UNC would be a good September TV game, but they'd rather rip the public off playing I-AA teams. Why not play each other?

    2) Ohio State is the defending national champ, but they have a revenge motive in their season opener, when they visit Virginia Tech. Hokies beat OSU last year.

    1) Odd situation will play out this weekend; Padres drafted a SS named Trea Turner last year, but traded him to Washington last winter. Problem is, there is a rule that prohibits trading players who were drafted for a year after the draft, so the trade remained a poorly-kept secret while Turner plays for the Padres' AA team.

Saturday is the one-year anniversary of Turner signing, so this weekend he'll get dealt officially to the Nationals' AA team in Harrisburg. Turner is hitting .323 in the Texas League and is considered a big prospect.

    1) If the baseball playoffs started today..........
    NL-- Mets-Cardinals-Dodgers. Wild Card: Giants-Cubs.
    AL-- Bronx-Royals-Astros. Wild Card: Twins-Rays

Game of the Day: Royals at Cardinals
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kansas City Royals at St. Louis Cardinals (-114, 7)

After raising significant questions by dropping nine of 11, the Kansas City Royals provided a swift answer with four straight wins to reclaim first place in the American League Central. The Royals look to continue their good fortune when they play the first of three games this weekend in the I-70 Series against the host St. Louis Cardinals on Friday.

"You're going to have slumps throughout the season. It's how you respond to it," Alex Gordon said after belting a three-run homer in Wednesday's 7-2 triumph over Minnesota. The win allowed Kansas City to cap a series sweep and move two full games ahead of the second-place Twins. The 31-year-old Gordon has struggled mightily in June (4-for-25), but helped the Royals take two of three from their Show Me State rival last month by launching a two-run shot in a 3-2 victory over St. Louis on May 23. The major league-best Cardinals rebounded from that rain-shortened, six-inning setback to win 10 of 12 before losing three of their last five contests - including two of three versus Colorado to end a seven-game road trip.

              TV:

              LINE HISTORY:
Books opened the Cardinals at -114 and -125. The total opened at 7.

              INJURY REPORT:
              Royals - N/A Cardinals - LF Matt Holliday (DL-Quad), 1B Matt Adams (DL-Quad)

              PITCHING MATCHUP:
Royals RH Yordano Ventura (3-5, 4.62 ERA) vs. Cardinals LH Jaime Garcia (1-3, 2.67)

Ventura was blitzed for four runs on six hits in three innings to suffer the loss in a 4-2 setback to Texas on Saturday. The 24-year-old Dominican also yielded four runs on five hits in seven frames against St. Louis en route to a 6-1 loss on May 24. Ventura pitched significantly better in his first meeting with the Cardinals, picking up the win after permitting just two runs in six innings.

Garcia has deserved a better fate in all three of his losses this season, yielding a total of five runs on 14 hits in 21 innings. The 28-year-old's latest heartbreak came against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday, as he allowed just two runs on six hits in seven frames. Garcia is 0-1 with an 8.31 ERA in his career versus Kansas City, with Gordon a blistering 4-for-9 against him with a homer and five RBIs.

              TRENDS:

*Royals are 4-0 in their last 4 overall.
*Cardinals are 41-12 in their last 53 home games.
*Under is 4-0-1 in Venturas last 5 starts overall.
*Under is 12-3-1 in Cardinals last 16 vs. a team with a winning record.

              CONSENSUS:
60.5 percent of the public are backing the Cardinals

MLB betting cheat sheet: Gray dominant during the day
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for this weekend’s major-league schedule:

                Into the Gray

After 13 starts only one team has scored more than three runs off Oakland Athletics’ right-hander Sonny Gray (7-3, 1.74 ERA). Just two have crossed the plate more than twice. Gray has been especially dominant in day games, with a 0.69 ERA in four outings. His next start will come on Sunday afternoon at the Los Angeles Angels, against whom Gray is already 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA this season.

                Cameron going crazy

Atlanta Braves’ center fielder Cameron Maybin is on a seven-game hitting streak and he is hitting .483 in June. The first-year Brave has a ridiculous nine multi-hit performances in his last 12 contests. Atlanta is 8-2-1 O/U in its last 11 overall.

                Houston, we have a problem

The Houston Astros get a much-needed day off on Thursday in advance of a three-game home series against the Seattle Mariners. Houston’s 4-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday completed a stretch of seven losses in seven days. In this current seven-game skid, the Astros have scored two runs or fewer on six occasions.

                Pitching Notes

                * Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers is coming off the disabled list and will make his first start of the season on Saturday against the visiting Cleveland Indians. Since being sidelined by a triceps injury, Verlander has made two rehab starts for Triple-A Toledo. He surrendered just one run on four hits and no walks in 5.2 innings in a 93-pitch appearance last weekend.

                * Pittsburgh Pirates’ ace Gerrit Cole is positively on fire, to the tune of three scoreless efforts in his last four starts (all featuring at least seven innings of work). Cole’s steadily-improving season statistics currently stand at 9-2, a 1.37 ERA, and 86 strikeouts in 78 innings. The 24-year-old righty will take the mound at home against the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday.

                Hitting Notes

                * The Toronto Blue Jays are on an eight-game winning streak (4-2-2 O/U) thanks in part to some outstanding work at the plate. They have scored at least four runs in all eight contests and at least six runs in six of the eight. Designated hitter Jose Bautista (.254, 11 HR, 37 RBI) has hit safely in 12 of his last 14 games and he has four homers in his last seven outings.

                * One man cannot be the reason for a team to be so inept as the Phillies, but second baseman Chase Utley certainly is not helping right now. The 36-year-old does not have a single hit in his last six games and he is zero for his last 21 at-bats. Philadelphia, not coincidentally, is 1-6 in its last seven overall.

                Umpire Notes

                * The Baltimore Orioles are 6-0 in their last six ball games when Lazaro Diaz is umpiring behind home plate. He'll be working the dish Thursday evening when the Boston Red Sox visit Camden Yards.

                Weather Notes

                * There is a 53 percent chance of thunderstorms in Chicago as the Cubs host the Reds Thursday evening.

                * Forecasts are calling for wind blowing in directly from centerfield at Globe Life Park in Arlington when the Texas Rangers host the Minnesota Twins Friday.

                Totals Streak

Baltimore Orioles (23-32-3 O/U): Two games in a row have gone under the total for the Orioles, which means they are now 1-6 O/U in their last seven overall. They have not allowed more than three runs in any of their last seven games.

                Injury Notes

                * Cincinnati Reds' shortstop Zack Cozart (.258, 9 HR, 28 RBI) sustained a knee injury while trying to beat out a throw at first base during Wednesday’s contest against the Phillies. Cozart had to be helped from the field without putting any weight on his right leg. The Reds assured that a DL stint is likely, and it could be extensive.

                * New York Yankees' closer Andrew Miller is going on the 15-day disabled list due to a forearm strain and he is expected to miss at least three weeks. Miller is tied for second in the American League with 17 saves and his ERA is 1.03. The Yankees used a less experienced bullpen on Wednesday and blew a lead in the eighth inning before giving up a winning run to the Washington Nationals in the 11th. That ended a seven-game winning steak.

Though rare, Locke has dominated the Phillies

Jeff Locke has owned the Philadelphia Phillies in his infrequent starts against the team, with the Pittsburgh Pirates winning each of the lefties' past four starts against the Phils.

Locke has pitched 26.2 innings while only allowing four runs through those four games, spread across the past two seasons. The left-hander has struggled this season though, as he has posted a 5.37 ERA with a 1.53 WHIP.

Nationals 1B Zimmerman heads to DL

MILWAUKEE -- The Washington Nationals hope some time off will help first baseman Ryan Zimmerman get back to being his old self again.

Zimmerman was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday with plantar fasciitis, a condition that has bothered him all season and is a contributing factor to his lackluster offensive play.

"It's pretty typical plantar fasciitis," manager Matt Williams said Thursday before the Nationals lost 6-5 to the Milwaukee Brewers. "It's not getting any better. Over the last three or four games, it's just really bothering him."

Zimmerman, 30, has 12 doubles, five home runs and 34 RBIs in 56 games but is batting just .209 with a .265 on-base percentage and is last among qualifiers at his position with a .611 on-base-plus-slugging percentage.

We hope you liked favorites and the over Thursday

Both favorites and the over turned out to be successful bets in Major League Baseball action Thursday night.

Favorites went 7-2 straight up, good for a cash rate of 77.78 percent, while the over was almost as good at 6-3, good for a 66.67 success rate.

Blue Jays putting up ridiculous numbers during streak

The Toronto Blue Jays have won eight consecutive games and the offensive numbers have been otherworldly. The Jays have outscored their opponents 57-21 during their tear, which equals an average scoring margin of +4.5 runs per game.

Though the 7.1 runs per game is impressive, the Jays ability to stop opposing offenses has been great. Toronto has allowed 1.6 less runs per game during their winning streak compared to their season average.

The Blue Jays start a weekend series with the Boston Red Sox Friday.

Rays continue to struggle at home

The Tampa Bay Rays have dropped seven of their past eight games within the friendly confines of Tropicana Field. Those eight games have seen the Rays tally a measly 2.1 runs per game while being outscored by 3.2 rpg.

Every major statistical hitting category drops when the Rays are at home, including their slugging percentage dropping from a season average of .379 to .360 in Tampa.

The Rays host the Chicago White Sox Friday.

                    Friday, June 12

                    Price owns the AL Central

Since moving to Detroit last season David Price and the Tigers have feasted on his division rivals, going 10-1 against the AL Central.

Personally, Price is 7-1 with a 2.03 ERA when facing off against division foes and he does so again Friday night when the Tigers start a three-game series with the Cleveland Indians.

The Indians will counter with right-hander Danny Salazar (6-1, 3.50 ERA). The Tigers are currently -130 home favorites.

Jiminez loves the mound at Oriole Park

Baltimore Orioles start Ubaldo Jiminez loves pitching at Oriole Park, with the Orioles going 8-1 in his last nine home starts.

In 2015 Jiminez is 3-1 with a 2.06 ERA while striking out 34 to just five walks in five starts at home.

He and the Orioles host Micahel Pineda (7-2, 3.33 ERA) and the New York Yankees Friday night as they begin a three game series.

Third best under pitcher takes the mound Friday

The Oakland Athletics are expected to start Jesse Chavez Friday, which should have under bettors happy with the pitcher posting a 1-7 over/under record this season. His 87.5 percent under rate is the third best in the MLB for pitchers with more than one start.

Chavez has posted a stellar 2.51 ERA this season while allowing a .285 OBP. In two of Chavez's past three starts, he left the game without allowing a single run.

The A's clash with the LA Angels Friday with a current total of 7.5.

Diamondbacks have never really figured out Bumgarner

Madison Bumgarner has been happy to face-off against the Arizona Diamondbacks during his career, with the ace posting a 7-4 record with a 2.76 ERA in 20 career appearances (19 starts).

On a smaller scale, the San Francisco Giants have won six of Bumgarner's past seven against the D-Backs.

Bumgarner and home field has the Giants as a big -164 favorite Friday.

Rockies losing as this pitcher contniues poor play

Kyle Kendrick has not been doing the Colorado Rockies any favors this season, with the team sporting a 1-7 record in hit last eight start.

Kendrick has allowed 32 runs and 13 walks during that span. The Rockies pulled Kendrick in the middle of an inning in four of his past eight starts as well.

The Rockies are currently +128 when they take on the Miami Marlins Friday.

Is the Blue Jays-Red Sox line a gift?

The red-hot Toronto Blue Jays opened as a +109 road dog for Game 1 of their three-game series with the Boston Red Sox and the two teams couldn't be heading in more opposite directions.

The Blue Jays are coming an off day having won eight games in a row, outscoring opponents by a ridiculous 57-21.

While the Red Sox are coming off a sweep at the hands of the Baltimore Orioles last night and losers of 5 of their last eight.

Both teams are currently listed at an even -104.

Like the Reds and the over today? Maybe think twice

The Reds can't be too happy to see umpire Victor Carapazza calling balls and strikes in today's game against the Chicago Cubs, as they have lost eight consecutive games with him behind home plate.

And despite the fact the Reds are on a bit of an over tear (10-2 O/U in their last 12 games), the under is 9-1-1 in Carapazza's last 11 games calling balls and strikes.

The Cubs are slight -109 favorites, with an opening total of seven.

Padres hope for boost with return of Myers

The San Diego Padres have Wil Myers back at the right time.

The Padres return to San Diego to open a three-game series with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday and they need to start making a move in the National League West.

Myers was one of the team's key offseason additions and was missed while spending nearly four weeks on the disabled list because of tendinitis in his left wrist.

He can play both outfield and first base, giving manager Bud Black flexibility. It is what he can do offensively that is the most important, though.

When Myers went on the disabled list, he was hitting .291 with five homers and 19 RBIs in 32 games. He had had .340 on-base percentage and .493 slugging mark.

Myers was 0-for-5 with a walk and run scored as the Padres (31-31) finished a 4-3 road trip with a comeback 5-4 victory in 11 innings over the Atlanta Braves on Thursday.

Non-existent offense has this team floundering

The Houston Astros have not been very good offensively, as they have repeatedly shown during their seven game losing streak. The 'Stros have scored 16 runs during the skid and have only scored more than two runs in a single game once.

To compound their anemic offense the Astros will face Felix Hernandez Friday, who has a 2.51 ERA with a 0.96 WHIP this season.

Houston is currently +136 when they host the Mariners Friday.

                      What's Bishop's status ahead of Game 5?

The murky outlook surrounding the Tampa Bay Lightning's goaltending situation did not get any clearer Friday.

According to Chris Johnston of Sportsnet, starting netminder Ben Bishop wasn't on the ice at the Lightning's practice. Bishop has been suffering from an undisclosed injury and did not dress in Wednesday's 2-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final.

Inexperienced backup Andrei Vasilevskiy was thrust into the spotlight in his place and stopped 17 of 19 shots sent his way. Bishop is officially listed as day-to-day.

Both sides own two games apiece in the championship series ahead of the pivotal Game 5 that's set for Saturday in the Sunshine State. Sportsbooks are dealing the Bolts in the -120 ballpark.

Zimmermann's ridiculous numbers against the Brewers

Jordan Zimmermann has certainly enjoyed going home and facing the Milwaukee Brewers. The Wisconsin-born pitcher has been lights-out against the Brew Crew posting a career record of 4-0 with a 2.35 ERA.

Those numbers get even more impressive when you look at the veterans' performances in Miller Park with a 2-0 record and a staggering 1.50 ERA.

The current Brewers lineup has a slash line of .234/.287/.351 in their combined careers against Zimmermann, including six regular contributors for Milwaukee never recording a hit against the right-hander.

The Nationals have been picking up wins when Zimmermann's starts, going 6-2 in the past eight games when he takes the bump.

Washington is currently +104 when they travel to Miller Park and challenge the Brewers Friday.

Over bettors cannot get enough of the Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies have been participating in a lot of high-scoring games as of late, and Over bettors are cashing in as a result.

The Over has gone 8-1 in the Phils' last nine games. Kevin Correia gets the nod when the Pittsburgh Pirates welcome Philly to PNC Park Friday. Jeff Locke is slated to start for the Bucs.

Oddsmakers opened the game with an 8.5 run total which has held firm as of this writing.
