Preview: Rangers (30-27) at Athletics (23-36)
    Game: 1
    Venue: O.co Coliseum
    Date: June 09, 2015 10:05 PM EDT

Sonny Gray has won three straight starts and pitched 23 2-3 consecutive scoreless innings against the Texas Rangers.

Texas is 4-0 in division games with Nick Martinez on the mound.

Runs could be at a premium Tuesday night when Gray seeks to help the Oakland Athletics end a three-game slide as they host Martinez and the Rangers.

Gray (7-2, 1.65 ERA) brings baseball's lowest ERA into the opener of this three-game set. That figure is at 0.86 during a three-start win streak capped by Wednesday's 6-1 victory over Detroit after he pitched eight scoreless innings.

"We think we've got a good chance to win when he's on the mound, and that's been true since he got here," manager Bob Melvin said. "It says a lot to see the kind of confidence he gives you when he's out there."

Gray is 6-2 with a 1.54 ERA in eight career starts against Texas, including his scoreless run that includes 14 2-3 innings in two 2015 wins in which he has scattered three hits. He walked a career-high seven over 6 2-3 innings the last time he faced the Rangers in a 7-1 victory May 3.

AL batting leader Prince Fielder, who has a .356 average, is 1 for 11 versus Gray. Elvis Andrus is 5 for 24 in this matchup, Leonys Martin is 2 for 24 and Robinson Chirinos 1 for 13.

Tuesday will mark the first time Gray will face top Rangers prospect Joey Gallo, who is 7 for 24 with two homers and 13 strikeouts.

The AL's worst team could have a tough time versus Martinez (4-2, 2.89), who is 2-0 with a 0.69 ERA in four division starts. He is 1-0 with a 1.38 ERA in two against Oakland (23-36).

Martinez has dropped consecutive outings after giving up a season-high seven runs in a season-low 3 1-3 innings in Wednesday's 9-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox.

Josh Reddick is 5 for 9 against the right-hander while Eric Sogard is hitless in nine at_bats.

Stephen Vogt is 7 for 17 with eight RBIs and Reddick 6 for 12 with eight in the season series for Oakland, which has taken four of seven matchups. Fielder is 11 for 26 to lead Texas.

The Rangers (30-27) have won 14 of 18, though they failed to complete a three-game sweep Sunday after a 4-3 loss at Kansas City spoiled their rally from three runs down.

'It's tough to sweep a series, especially against a team like that,' manager Jeff Banister said. 'After the first couple of innings we continued to battle. We battled back and put runs on the board and got back in the game.'

Oakland was swept over the weekend in Boston, blowing a four-run lead by allowing seven in the eighth inning of Sunday's 7-4 defeat.

"Today it looked like certainly early on and deeper into the game, we felt like we had a nice win to go home on and a 4-2 road trip but not much we can do about it now," Melvin said.

A's rookie center fielder Billy Burns is batting .346 over a 12-game hitting streak.

Preview: Diamondbacks (27-29) at Dodgers (32-25)
      Game: 2
      Venue: Dodger Stadium
      Date: June 09, 2015 10:10 PM EDT

Pitching has keyed the Los Angeles Dodgers' recent success against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Andre Ethier has helped a little also.

The Dodgers try to make it eight consecutive home wins over the Diamondbacks on Tuesday night.

Los Angeles (33-25) has won 11 of the last 12 meetings with Arizona (27-30) at Dodger Stadium, compiling a 1.61 ERA during seven straight wins there.

Rookie Mike Bolsinger delivered the latest gem Monday, yielding two runs and three hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings while Ethier had a three-run homer and an RBI single in a 9-3 win.

Ethier is 8 for 18 with two homers, five RBIs and four runs during Los Angeles' five-game overall win streak versus Arizona. He's also a .356 career hitter at home against the Diamondbacks after going 6 for 14 with two home runs and five RBIs in four meetings this year.

Carlos Frias (4-3, 4.25 ERA) has lost three of his last four starts but was sharp in his only appearance against Arizona. The rookie right-hander pitched four-hit ball over 5 1-3 innings in an 8-0 victory on May 1.

He's faced St. Louis in each of his last two starts and allowed six runs - three earned - and 15 hits over 13 2-3 innings. He gave up five runs - three earned - and 10 hits in 6 2-3 innings Thursday in a 7-1 loss.

"I know it wasn't a win and he could've been throwing zeros, but we love the effort he gave," manager Don Mattingly said.

Howie Kendrick made an impressive return to the Dodgers' lineup Monday, going 3 for 4 with two runs and one RBI. He started at second base for the first time in five games due to a left knee strain.

He's 6 for 12 in the past three games with Arizona.

Rubby De La Rosa was the latest Diamondbacks pitcher to get knocked around on the road, allowing nine runs in five innings Monday. Arizona starters have a 7.82 ERA during the team's 2-5 stretch away from home.

"We just want to get to .500, and maybe we can build off that. We have to buckle down, and play better on the road," manager Chip Hale told MLB's official website.

Doing that at Dodger Stadium could be difficult, however, since Hale's starters have a 7.17 ERA in four games there this season.

Robbie Ray (1-0, 0.82) will try to reverse that trend in his second start in place of the injured Archie Bradley (shoulder).

The left-hander battled through a career-high 110 pitches in five scoreless innings opposite Matt Harvey in a 6-2 loss to the New York Mets on Thursday.

"For the most part, my stuff was good," Ray said. "I just have to work on putting batters away."

Ray is 1-2 with a 7.07 ERA in five games - three starts - on the road, but he allowed one run in six innings of a 5-1 victory at Colorado on May 6.

A.J. Pollock continues to be a bright spot for the Diamondbacks, delivering a two-run double Monday. He's batting .390 with four homers, 14 RBIs,18 runs and eight steals in his last 20 games, but he's 2 for 17 in four contests at Los Angeles this season.

Phillies sign RHP Correia to $650K deal

          June 8, 2015

CINCINNATI (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies signed right-hander Kevin Correia to a one-year deal on Monday, filling their open rotation spot with a veteran who spent the first two months of the season in the minors.

Correia fills the spot of right-hander Severino Gonzalez, who was sent to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Sunday. Gonzalez was 2-2 with an 8.69 ERA in five starts.

Correia gets a $650,000 salary while in the major leagues and $150,000 while in the minors. He can earn $400,000 in bonuses based on starts in the majors: $100,000 each for five, 10, 15 and 20.

The 34-year-old pitched for San Francisco's Triple-A team in Sacramento this season, going 0-1 with a 3.58 ERA. He was released on May 29 after exercising an opt-out provision in his contract. The Phillies plan for him to start on Friday in Pittsburgh.

''He knows the league, he knows the hitters,'' manager Ryne Sandberg said. ''Other than that, we'll see when he gets here and then when he pitches on Friday.''

Correia has pitched for the Giants, the Padres, the Pirates, the Twins and the Dodgers. Last year, he went 2-4 with an 8.03 ERA in three starts and six relief appearances for the Dodgers.

His best season was in 2009 for the Padres. He threw his only shutout, pitched a career-high 198 innings, and went 12-11 with a 3.91 ERA. He also went 12-11 with the Pirates in 2011, and again for Pittsburgh in 2013. He was 14-26 for the Twins from 2013-14.

Fan hurt at Fenway expected to survive

            June 6, 2015

BOSTON (AP) - A fan hit by a broken bat at Fenway Park is expected to survive after sustaining life-threatening injuries during a game between the Oakland Athletics and Boston Red Sox.

Officer Rachel McGuire said Saturday that the woman is recovering.

Tonya Carpenter was struck in the head by the broken bat of Oakland's Brett Lawrie on Friday night. Police initially called her injuries life-threatening.

Carpenter is in serious condition, her family said Saturday in a statement.

''Tonya's family and loved ones are grateful to all who have reached out with thoughts and prayers but are requesting privacy at this time as Tonya recovers,'' said the statement from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Hospital.

There was a ''moment of reflection'' for Carpenter at Fenway Park before Saturday's game between the A's and Red Sox.

''All of us offer our prayers and our thoughts as we wish her a speedy recovery,'' the Red Sox said in a statement.

Lawrie was out of the lineup and manager Bob Melvin said it wasn't because of any psychological effect, but instead a back issue.

Friday night's game was halted in the second inning as emergency crews tended to a bloodied Carpenter and wheeled her off the field on a stretcher.

Lawrie broke his bat on a grounder and part of it hurtled a few rows into the seats between the backstop and Oakland's dugout on the third base side.

There are signs posted on the low retaining wall facing fans in the front row that read: ''Be Alert. Foul Balls and Bats Hurt.''

Alex Merlis, of Brookline, Massachusetts, said he was sitting in the row behind the woman when the broken bat flew into the stands.

''It was violent,'' he said of the impact to her forehead and top of her head. ''She bled a lot. A lot. I don't think I've ever seen anything like that.''

Merlis said the woman had been sitting with a small child and a man. After she was injured, the man was tending to her and other people were trying to console the distraught child, he said.

After the game, Lawrie said he hoped the woman would recover.

''I've seen bats fly out of guys' hands in the stands and everyone's OK, but when one breaks like that, has jagged edges on it, anything can happen.''

Concerned about a rash of flying broken bats and the danger they posed, Major League Baseball studied the issue in 2008 and implemented a series of changes to bat regulations for the following season.

''I do know that MLB is probably taking a look at the incident last night, as they do with any bat that flies into the stands,'' Red Sox manager John Farrell said.

Multi-piece bat failures are down about 50 percent since the beginning of the 2009 season, MLB spokesman Michael Teevan said.

''You have a ballpark here that's how old, and it's close, you have some maple bats that break. I think MLB and the players' association have talked long and hard about how they can try to keep this from happening,'' Melvin said.

Though dozens of fans at big league ballparks are struck by foul balls each season, there has been only one fatality, according to baseball researchers - a 14-year-old boy killed by a foul line drive off the bat of Manny Mota at Dodger Stadium in 1970.

The National Hockey League ordered safety netting installed at each end of NHL arenas after 13-year-old Brittanie Cecil was killed by a deflected puck at a Columbus Blue Jackets game in 2002. She died two days later, and her parents eventually settled with the team for $1.2 million, the league and the arena management.

With Cano struggling, Mariners among biggest disappointments

              June 8, 2015

SEATTLE (AP) - Robinson Cano was only supposed to hear the jeers and boos cascading from the spectators when he was playing on the road.

Hearing them at Safeco Field after strikeouts and weak grounders was not envisioned when he signed a $240 million, 10-year contract with the Seattle Mariners.

''I always stay positive and every at bat for me is a different one. I'm not going to overthink,'' Cano said. ''I haven't done my job lately. Just go game by game and play hard every single day.''

Cano's unexpected struggles at the plate are just the tip of one of the biggest underachievers in baseball to date. Picked by many observers to be a playoff-bound club thanks to Cano and the addition of Nelson Cruz, the Mariners' 2-9 homestand left them seven games under .500 at 25-32, the second-worst record in the American League.

Seattle became just the fourth team in major league history to score no more than three runs during any game of a homestand of 10 games or longer, following the 1913 Chicago White Sox, 1968 Houston Astros and 2010 Mariners. The three prior teams had only 10 games to fail in, according to STATS.

If 90 victories was the benchmark for the Mariners following an 87-win season that left them one victory shy of a postseason tiebreaker game, the ugly first two months has left Seattle needing to win at a .619 clip the rest of the way to reach that mark.

It's certainly possible. But nothing the Mariners have shown lately, highlighted by an offense unable to get clutch hits, makes it appear probable.

''The focus is always there to win games. With runners in scoring position is where we need to tighten it up,'' Cruz said. ''We get all our hits ... but when it matters the most to drive in runs we don't get it done.''

Cano's .239 batting average is the second-lowest of his career to this point of a season.

Cano's .278 on-base percentage and .320 slugging are down 100 points from this time last year and his poorest output through 57 games other than 2008 with the Yankees when Cano was hitting .216 with four homers and 19 RBIs. He has only two home runs this season and is batting .188 with one extra base hit in his last 20 games.

Even more alarming for Cano are the pitches he's chasing outside the strike zone and the lack of solid contact. Cano has 40 strikeouts and is on pace for a career-high 113.

Cruz has done more than his part for Seattle's offense, leading the AL in home runs with 18 and hitting .329.

''Guys that are supposed to perform have to perform,'' manager Llloyd McClendon said. ''The fact is if Robbie Cano, Cruz and (Kyle) Seager don't hit, then we're not going to win. And if they continue not to hit, then you'll be talking to someone else. I'll be driving a garbage truck. That's just the way it goes.''

Aside from Cruz, there's been little consistency, adding to the frustration. When the offense was good early, the starting pitching aside from Felix Hernandez was shaky. Lately, when the pitching has been good, the offense has floundered.

And a bullpen that was the best in baseball a season ago hasn't come close to matching the efficiency of 2014, capped by the roller-coaster ninth innings from closer Fernando Rodney.

McClendon continues to say he likes his club and believes Seattle will come out of this funk.

''This is a business of results and positive results only. You can talk about expectations or what a player should do or what we know what he can do, but the bottom line is you've got to get it done,'' he said. ''If we don't get it done, there will be changes, absolutely. It's the nature of the business.''

LEADING OFF: Scherzer vs Tanaka, Shields unbeaten, Jays roll

                June 8, 2015

A look at what's happening all around the major leagues today:

                TRY HITTING THIS

Bryce Harper and the Nationals face Yankees ace Masahiro Tanaka and his darting split-finger fastball for the first time. New York has won six in row; Max Scherzer starts for visiting Washington, which has lost eight of 10.

                STILL UNBEATEN

James Shields is undefeated this season and winless in his career against Atlanta. Guess which streak he's hoping to end when he pitches at Turner Field? Shields (7-0) is off to the best start for a Padres pitcher since Andy Hawkins was 11-0 in 1985. He is 0-2 with a 5.25 ERA in two career starts against the Braves - both with Tampa Bay, most recently in 2012.

                STREAKING

Chris Colabello of the Blue Jays has the longest active hitting streak in the majors at 18 games. He'll try to extend it when Mark Buehrle and Toronto take a six-game winning streak into their matchup with Dan Haren and the Marlins.

                CHECKUP

Cardinals outfielder Matt Holliday will be evaluated a day after he strained his right quadriceps. He fell awkwardly in left field chasing down a bloop double by Colorado's Carlos Gonzalez at Busch Stadium.

                OUT IN LEFT FIELD

Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco is trying to learn left field. He has a sore hip that will require surgery. He can't catch, but he can hit and run without problem. Mesoraco would like to try to play left field while Marlon Byrd recovers from a broken wrist. Mesoraco will play left field at Triple-A Louisville this week and see how it goes.

                ALMOST

Carlos Rodon will get another chance to show the Astros what they could have had. He was a candidate to be the overall top pick in the 2014 draft, but they passed on him and selected Brady Aiken. The White Sox took Rodon with the third choice, and he'll start against Dallas Keuchel in Chicago. AL West-leading Houston has lost five in a row.

Windy conditions at Citi Field Tuesday

Weather forecasts are calling for hitters' wind at Citi Field in New York when the Mets host the San Francisco Giants Tuesday.

Wind will blow out to right field at around 12 miles per hour during the game. According to our MLB Stadium data, the Mets have gone 3-0 when wind is blowing out to right field.

Noah Syndergaard is the probable starter for the Mets, while the visitors are expected to give the ball to Christopher Heston.

Blue Jays heating up thanks to a surprising source

The Toronto Blue Jays thumped the Miami Marlins 11-3 Monday night for their sixth straight win and while their offense has been as potent as always, it is their pitching that has keyed the turnaround.

The Blue Jays actually lead the majors in team ERA for the month of June at 2.03, a massive improvement over their 4.43 ERA in May and 4.78 ERA in April.

Toronto goes for their seventh win in a row Tuesday night when they send Mark Buehrle (7-4, 4.35 ERA) to the mound to continue their series with the Marlins. The Marlins counter with Dan Haren (6-2, 3.18 ERA). The Jays are currently -144 faves.

Diamondbacks bettors should take note of this stat

Dedicated Arizona Diamondbacks bettors (if these exist) should be cautious about their series with the Los Angeles Dodgers as the Snakes have gone just 1-11 in the last 12 meetings at Dodger Stadium.

The Dbacks have already been swept in a three-game series at Chavez Ravine earlier this season before dropping the first game of a three-game set Monday evening. Arizona posted a 2-7 mark overall there last season.

Carlos Frias is probable to start for the favored Dodgers (-143) while Robbie Ray is projected to start for the Diamondbacks (+132).

How the Phillies have kept their over streak going

With Philadelphia's 4-6 loss against the Cincinnati Reds Monday, the Phillies have gone over in seven consecutive games thanks to an offense that is finally starting to come together.

The Phillies, now 29-24-6 over/under for the season, have scored 4.71 runs per game over the last seven games. That is a big difference compared to their season average of 3.21 runs per game, which is good for dead last in the bigs.

Combine that with the fact they are giving up 4.19 runs per game has made the Phillies a great over play.

Philadelphia continues their three-game series in Cincinnati Tuesday. Aaron Harang (2.45 ERA, 3-7 O/U) starts for the Phillies, while Anthony DeSclafani (3.60 ERA, 3-6 O/U) gets the call for the Reds. The total is currently at 7.5.

Under wagers have cashed in all of Elias' starts this season

Under wagers are scorching hot in Seattle Mariners' pitcher Roenis Elias' starts this season, going 8-0 in all eight starts heading into Tuesday's showdown against Corey Kluber and the Cleveland Indians.

The Cuban southpaw is 2-3 with an ERA of 2.94 and a WHIP of 1.25 in eight starts this season, but the Mariners are just 2-6 in his eight starts. They've scored just 21 runs combined in the eight games that Elias has started.

Both the Mariners and their opponents in Elias' starts are combining to average just 5.5 runs in those games.

With Elias and Kluber toeing the rubber Tuesday, oddsmakers have pegged the total at 7.

                              Cubs sign RHP Soriano

Veteran right-handed reliever Rafael Soriano agreed to a minor-league contract with the Chicago Cubs.

The 35-year-old with 207 career saves expected a more competitive market for his services.

Soriano could emerge in a Chicago bullpen that went to a committee approach recently. He played for manager Joe Maddon in Tampa in 2010, and also was closer for the New York Yankees and Washington Nationals.

Hector Rondon began the season as closer but Maddon involved Jason Motte and others lately.

                                Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six millionaires who are not college graduates..........

-- Designer Ralph Lauren went to Baruch College for two years, then dropped out and joined the Army. His big break came as a necktie designer.

-- Bill Gates-- You may have heard of him. He is worth $86B, thats billion with a B.

-- Rush Limbaugh-- Went to SE Missouri State for a while, worked for the Kansas City Royals for a while, then found his niche on the radio. He is worth $400M.

-- Rachael Ray-- Went to Pace College for two years, then worked in a gourmet food store in NYC where her online cooking classes were discovered. She is worth $60M.

-- Larry Ellison-- CEO/co-founder of Oracle dropped out of two colleges; has tried to buy a few NBA teams. Wish he'd buy the A's instead.

-- Ted Turner-- Got kicked out of Brown, went to work for his dad's advertising business in Charlotte, has done fairly well since. If you don't know who he is, the "Turner" in TBS or TNT or Turner Broadcasting is him.

                                **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Wrapping up a suprisingly busy Monday....

                                13) Colin Cowherd makes a small fortune working for ESPN; good for him. But he is a guy who runs his mouth about things of which he knows little. Here is a tweet he put up Sunday night:

"Matt Dellavedova, this may seem a tad harsh, could be the worst player ever in a Finals to get major minutes."

Straight BS, hopefully not posted intentionally to draw attention to himself. If you've spent any time around sports, you know that guys like Dellavedova are the kind of guys who make teams win. There are only so many Lebron James out there, and even they need support to win games. Every winning team has guys like Dellavedova.

Dellavedova played four years at St Mary's, during which time the Gaels went 108-28; he is gritty, competitive and knows how to win. If some nitwit like Cowhered thinks he is a bad player, that shows how little Cowherd knows about basketball.

                                12) This is first time the first two games in NBA Finals both went to OT; kids who want to be good high school players should watch how hard these players compete on every possession- they're playing with great energy- thats good to see.

                                11) Fred Hoiberg is probably the most popular person, sports or otherwise, in Ames, Iowa history, so he is a tough act to follow as Iowa State's basketball coach, but Cyclones made a good move and hired Steve Prohm from Murray State. Prohm won big while he developed a couple of NBA-level guards, Isaiah Canaan and Cam Payne.

Iowa State is going to be very good this fall, but Prohm had better recruit like hell this summer, because they lose almost everyone after this coming season. Big X is a really tough league; it'll be tough to keep Iowa State in the upper half of it.

                                10) For the record, Prohm is an Alabama graduate and had success at Murray State in the south (Kentucky); why the hell didn't the Crimson Tide hire him?

                                9) You see Sports Center and these other highlights shows and the anchors all trying to be different to make themselves recognizable, so they can get better jobs. Want a way to get noticed on TV these days? Guaranteed to work.......

No shtick, no yelling, know all the names, have a clue. Not many like that out there.....

                                8) As of Monday morning, $315,829 in winning tickets on American Pharoah were still unclaimed. People are keeping the tickets as keepsakes of the Triple Crown.

                                7) White Sox lefty Chris Sale induced 25 swings/misses during his 119-pitch 8-inning stint Monday night, third straight start he's gotten 25+ misses. MLB high this season is 26 misses, done by Sale, James Shields and Rubby de la Rosa of Arizona.

                                6) Welington Castillo is first catcher since Mike Piazza in 1998 to play for three different major league teams in the same season before the end of June. That'll be the last time we mention Castillo and Piazza in the same sentence.

                                5) Nick O'Leary is a rookie tight end from Florida State who will be trying to make the Buffalo Bills this summer; he is also Jack Nicklaus' grandson, so if Rex Ryan golfs, he might get some good tee times if O'Leary makes the squad.

                                4) Was reading an aticle about Todd Gurley, a RB the Rams drafted in the first round; Rams' GM Les Snead hinted that Gurley's stock was higher because none of Georgia's linemen are projected as NFL players- four of those five guys are back this year. With a new QB starting for the Dawgs, their line had better be better, or else.......

                                3) Quick prediction: Russell Wilson will replace Tony Romo as the Dallas QB next season. Wilson left NC State because he wouldn't give up minor league baseball-- not many kids are headstrong enough to ignore a coach's request to spend the summer with with football teammates. Wilson will get big money from Jerry Jones.

                                2) 11 of Giancarlo Stanton's last 20 hits have been home runs.

                                1) NFL exhibition games are usually pretty ordinary, but Patriots' preseason games this summer will be fascinating, to see how playing time is distributed between Tom Brady, who can't play until Week 5, and Jimmy Garoppolo, who desperately needs game experience, but also can't get hurt because New England has nobody good behind him if he were to get hurt. The #'s 3-4 QBs might wind up playing a lot this summer.
