Marlins anxiously waiting for rotation to return to health

MIAMI -- The Marlins lost again on Monday, this time 5-1 to the Chicago Cubs, and they sent their deposed closer, Steve Cishek, down to the minors just a few months after he closed 2014 with 39 saves.

You might understandably conclude that this was yet another bad day for the Marlins -- but it wasn't.

Monday was actually a very good one for the Marlins -- but not because of anything that happened on a big-league ballpark.

No, the really good stuff was happening two hours north of Miami, on a minor-league field in Jupiter, where Jose Fernandez made his first mound appearance since he had Tommy John surgery early last season.

In a word, Fernandez was brilliant, firing his fastball from 94 to 97 mph. He pitched three no-hit scoreless innings, allowing just one walk and striking out seven.

The Marlins have had a miserable season so far, falling from expectations. But the thought of their pitching staff getting fully healthy gives the franchise hope.

As of now, their top four pitchers are on the disabled list, leading the list with Fernandez, who would jump to No. 1 on the staff if he can return throwing like he did on Monday.

Henderson Alvarez, an All-Star last year, would be No. 2 in the rotation if he can get over the shoulder inflammation that has plagued him all year.

Jarred Cosart (vertigo) would be No. 3, and Mat Latos (left knee) would be No. 4, although he has been a huge disappointment so far.

If those four were fully healthy, Dan Haren would be No. 5 in what could be an excellent rotation.

David Phelps, Tom Koehler and Brad Hand would return to the bullpen, which now features A.J. Ramos as the closer and set-up men Mike Dunn, Bryan Morris and Carter Capps.

That's the Marlins' dream. Now let's see if it comes true.

Padres may have pitching decisions to make soon

SAN DIEGO -- All managers have problems and some, hard to believe, are good ones.

Padres manager Bud Black is getting ready to wrestle with a dilemma and he's not that upset about it.

With right-hander Brandon Morrow throwing the first of two rehabilitation assignments as he rebounds from a shoulder injury, the Padres will soon have six starters.

Might the Padres mimic the Mets and go with a six-man rotation?

"I don't think so," Black said.

So Black is getting ready for a juggling act, with the odd man out headed for the bullpen.

Morrow appears to be about 10 days away from returning, if his rehab stints go well.

What we do know is James Shields, Andrew Cashner and Tyson Ross aren't going to be opening any bullpen gates.

That leaves Odrisamer Despaigne (3-3, 4.56 ERA) and Ian Kennedy (2-5, 7.15 ERA).

Despaigne is coming off one of his better games in beating the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday.

Kennedy is coming off one of his worst games, getting shelled by the Pirates his last time out.

But when looking at the versatility of their arms, Despaigne appears to be bullpen-bound.

Or maybe Kennedy comes up with an ailment and lands on the disabled list?

Odds are Despaigne, with an arm more suited for long relief, will relinquish his spot for Morrow.

Brewers relieved to have Lucroy back

ST. LOUIS -- The Milwaukee Brewers' season was already careening off the tracks before All-Star catcher Jonathan Lucroy fractured his left big toe on April 20, forcing him to miss 38 games.

Even though the Brewers entered Monday night's game against St. Louis as the owners of the major leagues' worst record at 17-34, they were sure glad to welcome Lucroy back to the lineup, inserting him into the No. 2 spot.

And while Lucroy went 0-for-4 -- although a diving catch by center fielder Jon Jay denied him a bloop hit in the first -- his pitch-calling skills and ability to convert borderline pitches into called strikes helped Milwaukee blank the St. Louis Cardinals 1-0.

"You're talking about an All-Star catcher," said starting pitcher Mike Fiers, who threw six shutout innings for the win. "He does so many things to help a team win. He calls a great game, does a great job blocking pitches, and he can rake at the plate.

"It's definitely a big boost for us, adding a guy like him to the lineup."

How much of a boost Lucroy can give a team with more than its fair share of holes remains to be seen, but there is no question the final four months of what looks like a lost season in Milwaukee just got a little more watchable.

MLB notebook: Rangers put Beltre on disabled list

The Texas Rangers placed third baseman Adrian Beltre on the 15-day disabled list on Monday.

The team said Beltre has a sprained left thumb, suffered while he was sliding into second base Sunday against the Boston Red Sox.

A report by CBSSports.com said Beltre was diagnosed with a dislocated thumb and was seeking a second opinion.

He has played in all 51 games this season, hitting .257 with six home runs and 18 RBIs.

--Colorado Rockies outfield prospect David Dahl is scheduled to undergo surgery to have his spleen removed after being involved in a serious collision while playing for the organization's Double-A club.

Dahl, playing center field for the New Britain (Conn.) Rock Cats, collided with second baseman Juan Ciriaco on a flyball to shallow center on Thursday.

Dahl was hospitalized and had emergency surgery to repair a lacerated spleen. He was scheduled to undergo surgery Monday to have his spleen removed at a Hartford, Conn., hospital.

--The Seattle Mariners optioned struggling shortstop Chris Taylor to Triple-A Tacoma. Taylor, 24, hit just .159 in 20 games since being recalled on May 4 and given the regular starting job. In 63 at-bats, he had only two extra-base hits and one RBI.

Right-handed reliever Mayckol Guaipe was recalled from Tacoma.

--The Milwaukee Brewers activated catcher Jonathan Lucroy from the disabled list. The All-Star had been out since April 20 with a broken big toe.

Lucroy was hitting just .133 (6-for-45) with no home runs and one RBI when he was injured.

--Two games were rained out on Monday.

The scheduled game between the Boston Red Sox and the Minnesota Twins in Boston was postponed, and the teams were scheduled to play a day/night doubleheader on Wednesday.

The first game of a three-game series between the Toronto Blue Jays and Washington Nationals was also rained out. They will play a split doubleheader on Tuesday.

Cain furthest along of Giants' recovering pitchers

SAN FRANCISCO -- The outlook is good, bad and worse for three veteran pitchers hoping to crack the Giants' red-hot starting rotation.

Veteran right-hander Matt Cain produced the positive news, throwing a pain-free, 30-pitch batting practice session before Saturday's 8-0 loss to the Atlanta Braves.

Rehabbing from a strained flexor tendon in his right arm, Cain pronounced himself ready for the next step in his comeback. That is expected to be a trip to the Giants' spring training home in Scottsdale, Ariz., sometime this week, with an injury-rehab start likely in his future by mid-June.

Veteran righty Jake Peavy appeared to be two steps ahead of Cain before experiencing stiffness in his troublesome back following his second injury-rehab start in the minors Wednesday night.

Peavy has been told to take some time off, after which he likely will land back in Scottsdale for further evaluation before his next start.

Lastly, the end of the Giants' road appears imminent for veteran right-hander Kevin Correia, who joined Triple-A Sacramento earlier this month when the San Francisco starting staff was in a bit of a shambles.

The 34-year-old hasn't pitched poorly -- a 3.58 ERA in 37 2/3 innings -- but it appears that will be irrelevant. The Giants' rotation has solidified since Correia joined the organization, and the former Giant clearly has noticed.

He is expected to exercise an opt-out in his Giants contract on Monday and search for a better opportunity elsewhere.

Nolasco's injury could open door for Milone

MINNEAPOLIS -- Left-hander Tommy Milone could be on the verge of getting another chance with the Minnesota Twins.

Right-hander Ricky Nolasco left his Sunday start in the second inning with sore right ankle, and his status for his next start, scheduled to be Friday against the Milwaukee Brewers, is in question. Nolasco was awaiting the results of an MRI exam Sunday.

Enter Milone, who began the year in the Twins' rotation but was optioned to Triple-A Rochester after just four starts when Nolasco came off the disabled list in April.

Milone started the year 2-0, including 7 2/3 shutout innings of two-hit ball in his first outing against the Chicago White Sox. He allowed three runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings in his second start against Kansas City.

However, the walks starting adding up for Milone, who issued six free passes over his final two starts and 11 overall, compared to just 13 strikeouts.

And while Milone is not known as a strikeout pitcher -- his fastball tops out in the upper-80s -- control has been a trademark over his five seasons in the majors with the Washington Nationals, Oakland Athletics and Twins.

"Everything we're asking him to do down there, he's doing," Twins general manager Terry Ryan said. "Attacking the strike zone is the only thing he didn't do up here. We all know he doesn't throw hard, so we all know when he comes in, there's a chance he's gonna get hit. You can't pitch from behind."

When the Twins sent Milone to Triple-A, they gave him one objective: pound the zone.

Milone has done just that in Rochester, walking just three hitters in five starts spanning 38 2/3 innings while striking out 47. In those starts, he is 4-0 with a 0.70 ERA.

"It's unfortunate for him that there's no room for him (in the rotation)," Ryan said before the game Sunday. "He's doing awfully well, there's no complaints about what he's doing down there."

MLB Top 10s: Best 'one-third' position players and pitchers

In the MLB Top 10s, here's what we do: rank players according to criteria. Those criteria change depending upon week and whim, but the Top 10s will always be informed by some angle or another, painfully contrived or otherwise.

And that brings us to this week's guiding query: Who are the best position players and pitchers at the "one-third" mark of 2015? What does this even mean? Well, we'll soon be roughly one-third of the way through the 2015 season, so that first checkpoint occasions these rankings.

All that matters is total overall value. I don't care about how good the teams in question are, only how valuable the players in question have been. Also, it's of no concern whether these performances are sustainable -- it's all about who's been the best over the first one-third of the season. With position players, defense and base-running matters -- it's not just about the bat. With pitchers, I don't care a whit about their win-loss records. It's about run prevention on a primary level and strong underlying peripherals on a secondary level.

And now let us recite baseball names for the dual purposes of SEO and making you angry. Feel free to brandish your incorrect opinions and make idle threats in the comments section.

First up, the best position players over the first one-third of 2015 ...

                RANK COMMENT

1 Bryce Harper, Nationals. The 22-year-old is setting the globe ablaze thus far in '15. After his first 209 plate appearances of the year, he's leading the majors in OBP, SLG, OPS, OPS+, home runs and walks. When it comes to total amassed value this season, there's really no arguing against Harper as the no. 1 guy.

2 Paul Goldschmidt, Diamondbacks. Goldschmidt stands as one of the best pure hitters in the game today. This season, he's batting a Harper-like .354/.463/.680, which comes to an OPS+ of 207. He's also leading the NL with total bases. Goldschmidt's done a nice job of reducing his double play tendencies since 2013. He's simply an elite producer.

3 Josh Donaldson, Blue Jays. Donaldson, of course, is an elite defensive first baseman, and this season he's well on his way to a career year at the plate. He's slashing .312/.372/.604 and on pace for a whopping 91 extra-base hits. Put him on your early AL MVP short-list.

4 Jason Kipnis, Indians. Healthy once again, Kipnis is producing in a big way thus far. In addition to providing good fielding at the keystone, he's batting .340/.411/.529 while the average second baseman this season has a slash line of .257/.316/.374. Speaking of health and durability, right now Kipnis leads the majors in plate appearances.

5 Todd Frazier, Reds. What a player he's turned into. He's developing into an asset with the glove, and this season Frazier's batting .287/.372/.624 with 16 homers in 48 games. He's also got a solid shot at stealing 20 bases for a second straight season.

6 Stephen Vogt, Athletics. We've long known that Vogt could hit a little bit, but to this extent? Right now, he's raking to the tune of .322/.411/.611, and he's walked almost as much as he's struck out. That's standout production by any standard, but also consider that Vogt spends his home games in a run-suppressing environment and that he's spent more than 90 percent of his defensive innings this season at catcher.

7 Mike Trout, Angels. Yes, you know all about the reigning AL MVP. He hits, he's a plus defender at a key up-the-middle position, and he's an excellent base-runner. Right now, Trout's bound for 41 homers, 34 doubles, 78 walks and 25 stolen bases.

8 Brandon Crawford, Giants. Even when he's not hitting, Crawford is a valuable contributor, as he's one of the best defensive shortstops around. In 2015, though, he just happens to be raking, too. He's batting .299/.371/.506 (despite playing his home games in a brutal park for hitters) and on pace for 21 homers 34 doubles. That's excellent production, especially by positional standards.

9 Miguel Cabrera, Tigers. Miggy's a liability with the glove and on the bases, but the man can still pound the baseball. He's batting .333/.441/.579 and, barring injury, should get to at least 30 homers for the 10th time in his career. He'll also make a run at reaching base 300 times this season.

10 Dee Gordon, Marlins. Gordon's a pleasure to watch ply his trade, and he's building nicely off a successful 2014. Right now, he's batting .370/.397/.436 and looking like a threat to steal 60 or more bases. As well, Gordon's made much progress with the glove, and these days he's profiling as a defensive asset.
Now for the best pitchers over the first one-third of this season ...

                RANK COMMENT

1 Max Scherzer, Nationals. The Nats' huge winter investment is looking quite promising thus far. Scherzer after 10 starts has pitched to a 1.51 ERA, and in 71 2/3 innings he's struck out 85 batters while issuing just 10 unintentional walks. Dominance.

2 Zack Greinke, Dodgers. This season, Greinke is a perfect 10-for-10 when it comes to quality starts. He's also got four times as many strikeouts as walks, and he's presently leading the majors with an ERA of 1.48

3 Chris Archer, Rays. Archer's 2015 is looking like one heck of a breakout. Not only has he given up just 18 runs in 68 innings, but he's also striking out more than 30 percent of opposing hitters. A refined changeup has helped his overall results. Keep in mind that Archer's still just 26 of age.

4 Gerrit Cole, Pirates. Cole's always had a high ceiling (he was the top overall pick out of UCLA in 2011), and this year he's pitching like it. The hard-throwing Cole has a sub-2.00 ERA and sub-2.50 FIP. He's also on pace to strike out 251 batters on the season. That would be the fourth-most strikeouts in a season in franchise history.

5 Dallas Keuchel, Astros. Keuchel's building off his excellent 2014 campaign in a big way. Thanks in part to heavy use of his devastating sinker, Keuchel shows the strongest groundball tendencies of any starter in baseball. This season, he's given up two or fewer runs in eight of 11 starts. He also leads all qualifiers in average innings per start (7.4).

6 Sonny Gray, Athletics. Gray continues to develop into one of the best pitchers in the game today. At present, he's pitched to an ERA of 1.82, and he's allowed just three home runs in 11 starts. As for the durability questions, recall that Gray is coming off a 2014 campaign in which he made 33 starts and worked 219 innings.

7 A.J. Burnett, Pirates. Burnett's return to Pittsburgh is going swimmingly. Once again, he's keeping the ball down, getting groundballs by the bushel (that's 35.2 liters of groundballs) and keeping runs off the board. Burnett, in his age-38 season, boasts an ERA of 1.81 and is on pace to top 200 innings.

8 Shelby Miller, Braves. It would seem that the Jason Heyward trade is working out pretty well for Miller and Braves. On Atlanta's watch, Miller has become less reliant on the straight fastball and more willing to go to his two-seamer and cutter. In a probably not unrelated matter, he's thrived: just 12 runs allowed across 10 starts.

9 Aaron Harang, Phillies. Yeah, I'm as surprised as you are. But the 37-year-old Harang deserves to be here. Only Greinke has notched a higher quality start percentage this season, and Harang's ERA checks in at 2.02. As well, he's putting up one of the best K/BB ratios of his 14-year career. Will it last? Almost certainly not, but as noted above, that's not part of the criteria.

10 Felix Hernandez, Mariners. King Felix seems to contend for the Cy Young Award every year, and 2015 is looking like no exception. Right now, he's running a 2.63 ERA, even after his rough outing against the Yankees on Monday night. Rare is the pitcher who has complete command of four pitches, but that's Felix.
                Until next week!
