Preview: Mets (29-23) at Padres (25-28)
    Game: 2
    Venue: PETCO Park
    Date: June 02, 2015 10:10 PM EDT

Noah Syndergaard's value to the New York Mets is going beyond pitching. His surprising offense, however, is simply an added bonus.

A day after Jacob deGrom turned in a gem, Syndergaard looks to deliver another of his own as the visiting Mets face the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night.

Syndergaard (2-2, 2.55 ERA) is so far living up to the hype as one of New York's prized prospects, yielding two earned runs in his last 19 1-3 innings while walking one and striking out 16 in his last three starts.

"I think the more you're out there the more you know you belong here," manager Terry Collins said. "When that takes place, you have more confidence in your stuff and you're not afraid to miss."

The right-hander was dominant Wednesday, allowing six hits and fanning six without a walk before exiting with one out in the eighth inning of a 7-0 win over Philadelphia.

Syndergaard was also a major contributor with the bat, going 3 for 3 with his first career home run. His three hits matched the team record by a pitcher, previously achieved by deGrom on May 16. He has hits in four straight at_bats, and Collins claimed he's considering using him as a pinch-hitter when he's not pitching.

"My main focus is on the mound," Syndergaard told MLB's official website. "Anything besides that is extra."

Syndergaard, though, has lost his first two road starts, surrendering seven runs - four earned - with 11 strikeouts in 11 1-3 innings.

He has a tough act to follow after deGrom carried a perfect game into the sixth inning Monday and limited the Padres two hits over eight in a 7-0 win.

New York (29-23) ended a seven-game road skid and won for the fifth time in seven overall.

Daniel Murphy matched his career high with four hits and added three RBIs, raising his average over the last 11 games to .452.

The Padres (25-28) suffered their eighth loss in 11 home games, falling to 13-15 at Petco Park.

Ian Kennedy (2-5, 7.15) will try to halt a four-start losing streak and rebound from a dismal outing. The right-hander has a 9.31 ERA in those four games, yielding seven homers in 19 1-3 innings.

His latest was the worst of that stretch, surrendering seven runs and as many hits - three homers - in 3 2-3 innings of Thursday's 11-5 loss to Pittsburgh.

"It's really frustrating," Kennedy said. "Fastball command was all over the place. They hit a couple of breaking balls for homers. It's really, really frustrating, really inconsistent, not what I like to do. As a pitcher you try to go out there and be as consistent as possible. This has been a real test so far, the first month or so that I've pitched."

Kennedy is 0-2 with a 7.20 ERA over his last three starts against the Mets after going 4-0 with a 3.45 ERA in his first five.

Murphy (3 for 15) hasn't had much success against Kennedy, but Curtis Granderson is 5 for 6 with a homer over the past three years. Granderson, though, is batting .188 on the road, going 0 for 12 in his last three away from Citi Field.

The Mets could get first baseman Lucas Duda back after he was hit by a pitch on his right knee during Sunday's 4-3 win over Miami. He's 7 for 21 with four homers, two doubles and six RBIs in six games and is a .324 hitter versus the Padres.

Preview: Pirates (27-24) at Giants (30-23)
      Game: 2
      Venue: AT&T Park
      Date: June 02, 2015 10:15 PM EDT

On a staff that includes the electric Gerrit Cole, no member of the Pittsburgh Pirates' rotation has been better than A.J. Burnett.

Following his first rough outing of the season, Burnett will look to regain his top form Tuesday night against the San Francisco Giants.

Pittsburgh (27-24) opened its series in San Francisco (30-23) on a high note behind Cole, who threw seven innings and allowed five hits and two unearned runs while striking out nine.

Andrew McCutchen hit a pair of sacrifice flies, Neil Walker's two-out, two-run double gave Pittsburgh the lead for good in the fifth and Chris Stewart had three doubles in the Pirates' ninth win in 11 games. It was Pittsburgh's first meeting with the Giants since its 8-0 loss in last season's NL wild-card game.

"We were able to play through a lack of execution and got a big swing of the bat from Walker," manager Clint Hurdle said. "Then we pitched the innings we needed to pitch and made the rest of the plays."

Burnett (5-1, 1.81 ERA) can win his sixth consecutive start after the Pirates' bats helped keep his streak alive Thursday in San Diego. The right-hander gave up five runs in 5 2-3 innings of an 11-5 win after previously not allowing more than two in any start and owning a 1.37 ERA in 59 innings.

After getting a total of five runs of support in his first five starts, Burnett has been backed by a whopping 35 in his last five.

He hasn't gotten any help from his offense in his last two outings against the Giants, losing 4-0 in his latest visit to AT&T Park with the Pirates in 2013. He pitched eight shutout innings last season with Philadelphia before the Phillies went on to lose 3-1.

San Francisco, which has dropped three straight for the first time since its eight-game slide in mid-April, will turn to Chris Heston (5-3, 3.82). Like Burnett, Heston has also been the beneficiary of a productive offense, enjoying a 9.38 run-support average in his last four starts, all Giants wins.

He received only one run Thursday, but tossed 7 1-3 scoreless innings before the Giants' offense against exploded late in a 7-0 home win over the Braves. Heston, who joined the rotation in the place of the injured Matt Cain, has a 2.16 ERA at home compared with a 5.79 on the road.

"He's done a nice job," manager Bruce Bochy said. "Filling in for Cain, he's stepped in and thrown the ball well. What's impressed me about this kid is that he's had a couple outings that haven't gone so well, but he's bounced back and been able to put those games behind him."

McCutchen is 27 for 67 (.403) in his last 17 games against San Francisco with 15 runs and nine extra-base hits. The former MVP is hitting .381 since May 7, and is 9 for 19 with five RBIs in his last six.

Preview: Rays (26-26) at Angels (28-24)
        Game: 2
        Venue: Angel Stadium of Anaheim
        Date: June 02, 2015 10:05 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Angels are showing signs of life offensively during their winning streak, but it might be difficult to continue as they face one of the toughest pitchers in the AL.

Red-hot Albert Pujols and the host Angels seek a season-high sixth straight win Tuesday night when Chris Archer stands in their way looking to help the Tampa Bay Rays avoid their eighth loss in 10 games.

Los Angeles (28-24) was hitting an AL-worst .232 while ranking second-to-last with 3.72 runs per game before batting .301 and averaging 6.6 runs over its past five.

The Angels have hit 13 home runs in those games after clubbing four in Monday's series-opening 7-3 win. Pujols went 3 for 5 with his first multi-homer game, while Mike Trout hit a three-run shot and David Freese added a solo blast.

Pujols is 8 for 19 with five homers during the win streak to move within one of Jimmie Foxx for 17th place all-time with 533. He's also gone 9 for 22 with four home runs over his last five meetings with the Rays.

'It took us a while to get going, but we'll take it anytime,' Pujols said.

The Angels, however, should find things more difficult as they try to improve to 7-2 on their 10-game homestand.

Archer (5-4, 2.12 ERA) is coming off the best performance of his outstanding start, allowing two hits over eight shutout innings while matching a career high with 12 strikeouts in Wednesday's 3-0 home loss to Seattle.

Archer's batting average against (.192) ranks second in the AL to Houston's Dallas Keuchel (.183). He's also has the league's fifth-best ERA, but the Rays (26-26) have provided two runs of support or fewer in seven of 11 outings.

"I try to keep the same approach that I have been since spring training, since last year, since the year before that," Archer, who has posted an 0.45 ERA in winning his three road outings, told MLB's official website.

Since May 16, 2014, when he threw 5 2-3 scoreless innings in a 3-0 win in Anaheim, Archer's 1.55 ERA away from home is by far the best in the majors of anyone with at least 15 road starts.

Erick Aybar's only hit in 10 at_bats off Archer was a home run, while Pujols is 3 for 6 and Trout is 4 for 9 with three walks.

C.J. Wilson will try to contribute to a rotation that has a 2.10 ERA with seven quality starts on the homestand. He's 2-0 with a 2.03 ERA in his past four home starts and is 11-2 with a 3.42 mark over his last 19.

He allowed one run despite issuing five walks and hitting a batter over six innings in Thursday's 12-2 home win over Detroit.

Wilson (3-3, 3.18) threw a five-hit shutout in his last home meeting with the Rays on May 17, 2014, but then gave up six runs over 1 1-3 innings at Tropicana Field on Aug. 2 after missing almost a month due to injury.

Evan Longoria is 3 for 10 with two homers off Wilson since 2012, though Asdrubal Cabrera has gone just 1 for 10 since 2013.

Kevin Kiermaier had two of the team's six hits and Nick Franklin snapped an 0-for-25 slump with a two-run home run Monday. The Rays, however, failed to score more than three runs for the seventh time during this 2-7 stretch.

              Tuesday, June 2

After red-hot April, Over bettors cooled off in May

April was an extremely profitable month for baseball Over bettors, but that trend quickly halted itself in May.

The Over went a sizzling 172-136 in April before going just 192-217 in the month of May.

Oakland ranks as the top Over play in the MLB, evidenced by it cashing in 32 out of its first 50 games.

MLB roundup: Pineda, Yankees top Mariners

SEATTLE -- On a night when his one-time mentor was struggling through one of the worst outings of his career, Michael Pineda was making a triumphant return.

The New York Yankees' 26-year-old starting pitcher went back to Safeco Field, the ballpark where he started his major league career, and he outdueled former teammate Felix Hernandez on the way to a 7-2 win over the Seattle Mariners.

Pineda (7-2) allowed two earned runs over six innings, while Hernandez (8-2) turned in his worst start of the season and one of the most forgettable of his 10-year career. Hernandez, 29, allowed season highs of seven earned runs and five walks in 4 2/3 innings.

Pineda, meanwhile, was nearly flawless for six innings before the Mariners finally got to him in the seventh. A Mark Teixeira grand slam in the fifth inning helped give the Yankees a 7-0 lead, and Pineda wound up allowing two runs on seven hits in six-plus innings. Pineda struck out nine and walked two.

              Cubs 5, Marlins 1

MIAMI -- Jason Hammel set a career high with 11 strikeouts, leading Chicago past Miami.

Hammel (4-2) allowed five hits, no walks and one run in 6 2/3 innings, lowering his ERA to 2.82. All 11 strikeouts were swinging.

The Cubs used a balanced attack on offense with eight different players getting a hit. The most impressive of those hits was a solo home run in the eighth inning by Starlin Castro, who pulled it to left for his fourth long ball of the season.

              Astros 5, Orioles 2

HOUSTON -- Evan Gattis capped a four-run rally with a two-run, two-out single in the seventh inning as Houston bounced back to beat Baltimore.

Having scuffled for most of the night against Orioles right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez, the Astros recovered in the seventh, starting with a leadoff double by Chris Carter. Houston added three more hits against two Baltimore relievers, with Gattis' opposite-field hit to right field coming off right-hander Tommy Hunter.

The Astros loaded the bases against Brad Brach (3-1) before George Springer added a run-scoring single to center on a 3-0 pitch and Jose Altuve chipped in a sacrifice fly.

              Brewers 1, Cardinals 0

ST. LOUIS -- Mike Fiers worked six scoreless innings as Milwaukee made a first-inning run stand up for a win over St. Louis.

Fiers (2-5) gave up four hits, walked two and struck out six. A bullpen that worked a staggering 13 1/3 innings in Sunday's 7-6, 17-inning win over Arizona got the last nine outs, with Francisco Rodriguez pitching the ninth to earn his ninth save.

Jaime Garcia (1-2) was a tough-luck loser, allowing only three hits and a run in seven innings with no walks and four strikeouts. It was only the seventh loss in 27 home games for St. Louis.

              Dodgers 11, Rockies 4

DENVER -- Clayton Kershaw baffled the Rockies and aided his own cause with the first three-hit game of his career, leading Los Angeles past Colorado.

Andre Ethier and Jimmy Rollins hit solo homers for the Dodgers in the second inning. Joc Pederson hit a three-run shot in the sixth, when the Dodgers sent 12 batters to the plate and broke open a 2-2 game with a six-run uprising that matched their highest-scoring inning of the season.

Los Angeles' Howie Kendrick hit a three-run homer in the eighth to give him four RBIs. Adrian Gonzalez went 4-for-4, and everybody in the Dodgers' starting lineup had at least one hit in the team's 18-hit attack.

              Braves 8, Diamondbacks 1

PHOENIX -- Freddie Freeman homered and drove in three runs to support Alex Wood's stellar eight innings, and Atlanta cruised past Arizona.

Freeman's seventh home run and second as many games gave the Braves a 5-0 lead in the fifth inning. The first baseman added an RBI single in the sixth inning to make it 7-1.

That was more than enough for Wood, who allowed one run on seven hits over eight innings. Wood (4-2) struck out four, and he did not walk a batter for the first time since Aug. 31. The left-hander also hit a two-run single that opened the scoring. Wood has allowed a total of three earned runs and four runs overall in his past three starts.

              Mets 7, Padres 0

SAN DIEGO -- Jacob deGrom pitched eight scoreless innings as New York breezed past San Diego.

DeGrom (6-4) gave up just two hits and struck out eight. He didn't walk a batter in snapping the Mets' seven-game road losing streak. Sean Gilmartin pitched the ninth to give deGrom his first road win in four decisions this season.

The Padres' Andrew Cashner (2-8) lasted just 4 2/3 innings, charged with six runs (five earned) on a career-high 11 hits. He also struck out a career-high 12 batters.

              Pirates 4, Giants 3

SAN FRANCISCO -- Gerrit Cole became the third eight-game winner in the major leagues as Pittsburgh beat San Francisco.

Neil Walker broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run double in a three-run fifth inning as the Pirates prevailed in a rematch of last year's National League wild-card game.

Cole (8-2) gave up two unearned runs in the first inning and then shut out the Giants over the next six, allowing five hits in his seven innings. He walked two and struck out nine. Mark Melancon pitched a perfect ninth for his 14th save.

              Angels 7, Rays 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Albert Pujols hit two home runs, and Mike Trout and David Freese also went deep, lifting Los Angeles to its fifth win in a row.

The winning streak is the longest of the season for the Angels, who are a season-best four games over .500 at 28-24. The four homers continued the team's recent power surge: Los Angeles has 13 home runs in its past five games.

Pujols is leading the way, with five homers in those five games, increasing his season total to 13. The first baseman is tied with center fielder Trout for the team lead.

                      Tuesday, June 2

Small chance of rain in Washington Tuesday

According to weather forecasts, there is a 35 percent chance of rain in D.C. as the Washington Nationals host the Toronto Blue Jays in the opener of a doubleheader Tuesday.

Furthermore, the opener looks to be played under overcast skies with wind blowing in from centerfield at around nine miles per hour.

The two clubs were scheduled to meet Monday evening but that game was postponed due to rain, forcing the teams into the double bill.

Cueto has historically not fared well vs. Phillies

The Cincinnati Reds have simply not been getting the job done for their bettors against the Philadelphia Phillies behind Johnny Cueto.

Cincy is 1-5 in Cueto's last six outings versus the Phils, a trend they'll seek to buck Tuesday when he gets the ball in the City of Brotherly Love.

Philly is slated to counter with Sean O'Sullivan. Sportsbooks are dealing the Reds in the -160 ballpark with a total of 7.

Braves' Miller has been a boon for Under bettors

Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Shelby Miller has had a remarkable start to the regular season, which means bettors banking on low-scoring affairs have been reaping the rewards.

Miller (5-2, 1.48 ERA) has cashed the Under in eight out of his 10 outings so far. The only hurler posting better numbers in that category is Jake Odorizzi of the Tampa Bay Rays (2-9 Over/Under).

The Braves are scheduled to send Miller to the mound once again Tuesday against Josh Collmenter and the Arizona Diamondbacks. Oddsmakers have tabbed the matchup with a total of 8.5.

Buchholz costing MLB bettors the most

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Clay Buchholz heads in Monday's action as the worst money pitcher in the bigs, costing bettors $-825 in 10 starts this season. The Sox have gone 2-10 in those Buchholz's starts so far.

Under bets hot with Basner working behind home

The Under has gone 5-0 in the last five games when umpire Toby Basner is working behind home plate. Basner will be calling balls and strikes when the Toronto Blue Jays visit the Washington Nationals for the first game of a doublheader Tuesday.

There habe been 29 runs scored in those five ball games, averaging just under 6 runs per contest. The Over/Under count is 2-5-2 in nine ball games when Basner has been behind the dish this season.

R.A. Dickey gets the ball for the Jays while the Nats are expected to send Jordan Zimmermann to the bump. Oddsmakers have the total pegged at 7.5 for the afternoon game.

Blue Jays slumping on the road

The Toronto Blue Jays have struggled away from the Rogers Centre, dropping seven of their last eight games on the road.

The slide has the Blue Jays tied for the third most losses on the road in 2015with 17 to just nine wins.

It won't get much easier for the Jays who have to travel to Washington to start a three game series with the Nationals Tuesday.

R.A. Dickey (2-5, 5.77 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound for Toronto, while the Nats are expected to counter with Jordan Zimmerman (4-2, 3.26 ERA).

                        Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Actor James Woods finished 7th in a No-Limit Shootout at the World Series of Poker, cashed for $28,832.

-- Lot of rain in the east Monday; doubleheader in Washington Tuesday, Boston on Wednesday- there's also a twinbill in Denver today.

-- Arizona loses catcher Tuffy Gosewich (knee) for the season.

-- UAB is re-instituting football for the 2016 season, which saves its basketball team from being banished from Conference USA.

-- Over 1,800 media credentials have been issued for the NBA Finals.

-- Bulls will announce Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg as its new coach today; back in 1998, the Bulls hired another coach from Iowa State. Tim Floyd went 49-190 in the post-Jordan era. Hoiberg will fare much better.

                        **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

                        13) If Major League Baseball ever shortens its season from 162 to 154 games, it'll be for one reason and one reason only; to keep the World Series out of November. Giving up a week of regular season games would be very expensive; its a bad idea.

                        12) Rice beat crosstown rival Houston in 20 innings Monday, eliminating Cougars from the NCAA tournament. One of Houston's pitchers threw 137 pitches in the game, two years after the kid had Tommy John surgery. Most pitches thrown in any major league this season is 125 (Johnny Cueto). Major leaguers get paid millions and they get protected better than college kids-- go figure.

                        11) College baseball teams bunt too much; UCLA had its cleanup hitter sacrifice in a game Sunday night. College baseball is played a lot differently than pro ball.

                        10) The son of former NFL QB Steve Bono and Reggie Miller's nephew both play for UCLA, which got eliminated by Maryland last night. Terrapins now play Virginia in a battle of old ACC rivals this weekend.

                        9) Maryland wears white caps with a dark brim; no major league team wears white caps, not even sure if they're allowed to. Cincinnati had white caps with pinstripes in the 90's, but didn't wear them for long.

                        8) Barry Zito has thrown 14 consecutive scoreless innings in AAA; we'll be seeing him in the big leagues again later this summer, hopefully not for the A's.

                        7) A 92-year old woman ran a marathon in San Diego Sunday. 92 freakin' years old.

                        6) Former NFL head coach Mike Sherman, who coached Texas A&M for a while in addition to coaching the Packers, will be a high school coach at Nauset Regional HS in Massachusetts this fall. He must have saved a lot of money.

                        5) Game 1 winner is 48-20 in NBA Finals series; Lebron James' teams are 0-3 when they play Game 1 on the road.

                        4) Average major league attendance this year: 29,302, up 153 people a game from LY. Highest the average has ever been thru May was 2008 (30,063).

                        3) Kansas City's home attendance is up 55.9% this year, Seattle's 33.8%. Tampa Bay's attendance is down 22.4%, Atlanta's is down 17.5%.

                        2) St Louis Blues have never won the Stanley Cup but by my count, they've had six different head coaches who won a Cup for a different team:
-- Scotty Bowman, won nine Cups for three other teams
-- Joel Quenneville, who twice with Chicago
-- Al Arbour, won four Cups with the Islanders
-- Mike Keenan, won the Cup with the Rangers in 1994.
-- Jacques Demers, who won the Cup with Montreal in '93.
-- Ken Hitchcock won a Stanley Cup with Dallas in 1999.

                        1) Someone please explain to me why 71-year old John Kerry is riding a bicycle in France? He gets in an accident, breaks his thighbone (it is really hard to break your thighbone) and can't complete the assignment our tax dollars are paying him to do. To paraphrase Vince Lombardi in NFL Films, "What the hell is going on out there???"

Winning and losing streaks hold more weight in MLB betting

More so than any other major professional sport, baseball is highly conducive to streaks, both from an individual as well as a team perspective.

Batters having reached base safely in 15 consecutive games, fielders going three months without committing an error and clubs, like the defending champion San Francisco Giants, who have ripped off multiple five-game winning streaks to complement their season-long eight-game winning streak, capture headlines on a routine basis thanks to a 162-contest season that caters to freakish levels of consistency.

Look no further than the 2014 Oakland Athletics for a prime example in the art of streaking, as the Bay Area’s east side squad produced five winning streaks of five or more games during the first half of last season before racking up six losing streaks of three of more games during the second half of the campaign.

It’s no secret that there’s money to be made on a streaking baseball squad, whether it be a winning or losing streak. But the question becomes at what point should a gambler jump on the train? After all, it’s technically not a streak until an organization hits three straight wins or three consecutive losses, so should bettors look to jump into the pool come game four in the equation?

We recently examined the 2015 schedules of each of Major League Baseball’s 30 teams in order to identify how many three-game streaks have taken place through the first two months of the season as well as to track what happened after a three-game streak was firmly locked into position.

Granted, this is a relatively small sample size, but our research did yield a grand total of 172 instances so far in 2015 in which a team won or lost three consecutive matchups.

                          So what happened next?

                          1. Of the 172 three-game winning or losing streaks to take place this season, 77 of them (44.7 percent) ended in game four.

                          2. However, 50 of those 172 three-game streaks (29 percent) went longer than four games. The most profitable winning streak of the year came courtesy of the New York Mets, who went on to win eight times in a row following the establishment of the team’s three-game winning streak that began on April 12 at Atlanta.

The longest losing streak of the season took place in Colorado, where the Rockies lost eight straight matchups following the establishment of a three-game losing streak that began April 28 at Arizona. As you could no doubt infer, riding both of those aforementioned runs following the establishment of each three-game streak would have resulted in bettors posting a 16-2 record.

                          3. The National League has been far more profitable than the American League this season when it comes to jumping on the train after a three-game streak. National League teams have posted a combined 126-90 record (.583) for bettors after the establishment of a three-game streak, while AL squads have combined to go 78-79.

                          4. Betting on (if winning) or against (if losing) the following teams after the establishment of a three-game streak this season has yielded the most profitable results: San Francisco Giants (14-5), Philadelphia Phillies (13-4), Houston Astros (10-4), Milwaukee Brewers (10-5), St. Louis Cardinals (10-5), Colorado Rockies (12-7).

                          5. Betting on (if winning) or against (if losing) the following teams after the establishment of a three-game streak this season has yielded the worst results in terms of profitability: San Diego Padres (2-8), Boston Red Sox (2-6), Seattle Mariners (3-6).

                          CURRENT ACTIVE THREE-GAME STREAKS

Should you be interested in tracking this information for yourself or in the event you want to jump on the train and test your luck, here are the current active streaks heading into Tuesday night’s slate of action:

Washington Nationals: Having lost three in a row to the Cincinnati Reds over the weekend, the Nationals play two against the Toronto Blue Jays Tuesday after Game 1 was rained out Monday.

Philadelphia Phillies: The Phillies have dropped seven straight contests heading into Tuesday night’s three-game series opener against the Cincinnati Reds. Johnny Cueto is scheduled to take the bump for the Reds, who are currently listed as -160 favorites. As an added bonus, be advised that…

Cincinnati Reds: …are currently riding a three-game winning streak after sweeping the Washington Nationals in Cincinnati over the weekend, meaning we have the best of both worlds taking shape in this showdown against the aforementioned Phillies Tuesday night.

Boston Red Sox: David Ortiz and the BoSox have dropped three straight leading into Tuesday night’s matchup with Mike Pelfrey and the Minnesota Twins. Be advised that these two teams were scheduled to play on Monday, but that game has since been postponed.

Detroit Tigers: Losers of four straight, the Tigers had the day off on Monday before the commencement of a three-game series with an Oakland A’s squad that has won six of its last nine games. Kendall Graveman and the A’s are currently listed as +125 underdogs.

Texas Rangers: Thanks to the emotional boost provided by the return of slugger Josh Hamilton to the lineup, the Rangers have ripped off three straight wins entering Tuesday’s meeting with the Chicago White Sox. Colby Lewis and the Rangers are currently prices as -110 favorites.

The Houston Astros are a sizzling 8-1 in their last nine games versus right-handed starting pitchers.

Jose Altuve and company face another righty, Mike Wright of the Baltimore Orioles, in the Lone Star State Tuesday evening.

The total is on the move in Tuesday's matchup between the Atlanta Braves and Arizona Diamondbacks. The number entered the day at 8.5 and has been moved up to 9 at most shops both online and in Nevada.

Over has followed this pitcher around lately

The Over has paid out in each of Colby Lewis's last six outings.

The Texas Rangers right-hander is slated to get the nod in Tuesday's contest against the Chicago White Sox. Jeff Samardzija is the probable starter for the ChiSox.

Oddsmakers have set a total of 8.5 for the tilt.

There have been 29 runs scored in those five ball games, averaging just under 6 runs per contest.

Game of the Day: Pirates at Giants

Pittsburgh Pirates at San Francisco Giants (-110, 7)

The Pittsburgh Pirates are doing their best to duplicate the formula perfected by the San Francisco Giants, who relied on stellar starting pitching to win three of the last five World Series championships. The Pirates turn to another of their aces on Tuesday as they continue their three-game set against the host Giants, who have lost three in a row following a five-game winning streak.

A.J. Burnett, who ranks fourth in the National League with a 1.81 ERA, takes the mound aiming to lead the Pirates to their 10th win in the last 12 games. The Pirates’ starting pitchers are 9-1 with a 2.47 ERA and 85 strikeouts over the last 12 games, including Monday’s 4-3 series-opening victory. The Giants posted a 21-9 record in May but opened the new month with another fairly quiet night from right fielder Hunter Pence, who has three hits in his last 27 at-bats while hitting third in the order. Left fielder Nori Aoki continues to spark the Giants from the leadoff spot with a .407 average and 10 runs scored over his last 16 games.

TV: 10:15 p.m. ET, ROOT (Pittsburgh), CSN Bay Area (San Francisco)

LINE HISTORY: Books opened the Giants -105, but that has been adjusted to -110. The total opened at 7.

                              INJURY REPORT: N/A

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH A.J. Burnett (5-1, 1.81 ERA) vs. Giants RH Chris Heston (5-3, 3.82)

Burnett earned his fifth straight win last Thursday despite allowing five runs (four earned) over 5 2/3 innings against San Diego. The 38-year-old’s surprising dominance extends to the road, where he’s 3-0 with a 1.89 ERA in six starts. Aoki is 5-for-13 with three doubles against Burnett, who is 6-3 with a 2.04 ERA in 10 career starts against San Francisco, including eight shutout innings at Citizens Bank Park while pitching for Philadelphia on July 23, 2014.

Heston’s spot in the rotation appeared in jeopardy following two rough outings, but he bounced back nicely with 7 1/3 shutout innings last Thursday against Atlanta. “He's a four-pitch guy, gets good sink on the ball on both sides, he can four-seam it, he's got the curveball and slider,” manager Bruce Bochy told reporters. “He throws a lot at you, and he's got the velocity to go with it.” Heston has been especially strong at home, where he owns a 2.16 ERA in five starts this season.

                              TRENDS:

                              * Pirates are 5-2 in the last seven meetings.
                              * Over is 5-0 in Hestons last five starts overall.
                              * Pirates are 9-2 in their last 11 overall.
                              * Giants are 4-0 in Heston's last four starts.

COVERS CONSENSUS: Fifty-three percent of bettors are backing the Pirates.

Locke gets a reprieve in Pirates' rotation

SAN FRANCISCO -- When Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle addressed the media Sunday after the Pirates' series-ending loss at San Diego, he had to bite his tongue in regards to his real thoughts on struggling starter Jeff Locke.

Want to sleep on it, Hurdle said when asked if he was considering dropping the left-hander from the rotation, presumably in favor of righty Vance Worley, who mopped up Locke's mess Sunday.

Turns out, a good night's sleep -- and consultation with pitching coach Ray Searage and general manager Neal Huntington -- convinced Hurdle to be patient.

The manager announced Monday before the Pirates' series opener against the San Francisco Giants that Locke, despite an ERA that has ballooned to 5.34, will make his next scheduled start Saturday in Atlanta.

However, Locke will be required to do a little extra work between now and then.

Hurdle said Locke will throw two bullpen sessions -- one more than usual -- between starts. A day off Thursday, which will give Locke a fifth day between starts, will allow for the additional work.

Locke, who has just one win in his last eight starts, was knocked out after four innings Sunday, having allowed seven runs on eight hits. Worley finished the game with four innings of shutout relief.
