    Monday's Tip Sheet

    June 1, 2015

New York Yankees at Seattle Mariners | 10:10 p.m. ET

In what probably is the most intriguing matchup on this first night in June, the Yankees and Mariners square off in game one of a three-game set at Safeco Field. It will represent the first time Seattle has met their former top prospect, Michael Pineda (6-2, 3.36 ERA), since the 2012 trade that brought him to the Bronx. Pineda was simply marvelous as a rookie with the Mariners in 2011, when he had a 3.03 ERA through his first 18 starts, a stretch that contributed to him being named to the AL All Star team in that season. Following a period of injuries that largely kept him sidelined until last season, Pineda finally got to pitch for the Yankees in 2014 and was terrific, producing an outstanding 1.89 ERA and 0.83 WHIP in 13 starts, while putting together a 59/7 K/BB ratio in 76-plus innings pitched. He’s continued his success into this season, and overall, has yielded three runs or less in seven of his ten assignments. The Yankees will especially need him tonight, coming off a series loss in Oakland that saw the club drop three of four over the weekend.

Of course, the Mariners have a proven ace and a former Cy Young winner of their own in Felix Hernandez (8-1, 1.91 ERA), who they’ll counter with in the opener. Hernandez has been enjoying another stellar season thus far, as opponents are only hitting .195 off the 29-year-old right-hander. Furthermore, Hernandez has continued to maintain his high strikeout rate, owning 71 punch-outs, compared to just 15 walks, in 70.2 innings pitched on the season. As you’d expect, Hernandez has been as consistent as anybody, surrendering two runs or less in eight out of ten tries, and he’s lasted six or more innings in all but one of his starts. Like the Yankees, the Mariners are coming off a crucial series loss over the weekend, this one being at home in a four-game set opposing the Indians, which dropped them under .500. As a result, both teams will really want this series to get back on track, and the first game could put offense at a premium. Unsurprisingly, the over/under for tonight’s Pineda vs Hernandez matchup is 6.

Minnesota Twins at Boston Red Sox | 7:10 p.m. ET

Shockingly, no team in the American League has been hotter than the Minnesota Twins, who went a ridiculous 20-7 in the month of May to skyrocket all the way to the top of the AL Central. They’ll look to keep it going in the first week of June when they begin a series at Fenway Park against the Red Sox, whom they swept last week at home in three games. They’ll begin the proceedings with the surprising Mike Pelfrey (4-1, 2.77 ERA) toeing the rubber in game one, and the former Met has been phenomenal this year after missing just about all of last season. In fact, he’s yielded two runs or less in seven of his nine starts, but his strikeout rate has been low (26 Ks in 52 IP), making it possible that a regression is coming sooner than later. At the same time, he’s allowed just three home runs all year long.

The Red Sox, meanwhile, have been heading in an opposite direction, after entering May with the same record as Minnesota. Instead, however, they proceeded to go 10-19 for the month, and enter June having lost six of their past seven. In tonight’s series opener, they’ll trot out Clay Buchholz (2-6, 4.33 ERA), who has emerged in recent weeks to become one of Boston’s best starters after the rotation collectively got out to an awful start with the worst team ERA in the bigs in the first month. Buchholz has helped changed that trend, going seven or more innings and yielding two or fewer runs in each of his past three starts, cashing all three unders along the way as well. He could continue trending up, as he does possess a nice 62/16 K/BB ratio in 60 innings of work. Surprisingly, Boston is currently a -160 favorite for this affair.

Pittsburgh Pirates at San Francisco Giants | 10:15 p.m. ET

Two of the hottest teams in the National League square off tonight in game one of a three-game set at AT&T Park. The Giants are coming off a red-hot month that saw them go 21-9 in May, the best record in the NL, which has helped not only save their season following a toxic 3-9 start, but has vaulted them all the way up to first place in the rugged NL West in the process. May also saw the return of one of the club’s most important players, Hunter Pence, who has helped San Francisco put together their extensive surge. The Giants will kick things off this evening with Ryan Vogelsong (4-2, 4.24 ERA) in game one, and the right-hander has been relatively solid, especially when you consider he had a 5.73 ERA only two years ago, and almost didn’t crack the rotation entering 2015. He’s coming off an absolutely blistering May, which saw him go 4-0 with a 1.14 ERA in five starts, allowing two runs or less in each outing. He’ll be a +125 underdog in this matchup, potentially making him a quality value bet.

The reason he’s a home ‘dog, despite his sensational month, has much to do with his counterpart this evening, Gerrit Cole (7-2, 2.11 ERA), who has pitched so well that some people already believe he’ll be the starter for the National League when we arrive at the All Star Game in mid-July. Cole also finds himself amongst the league leaders in strikeouts, having logged 70 punch-outs in 64 innings, compared to just 14 walks, and he boasts an impressive 1.09 WHIP. In addition, the former No. 1 overall draft pick has gone 3-0-2 towards the under in his past five starts. Perhaps most impressive of all, Cole has not allowed more than three runs in any of his ten starts, which is why he’s constantly labeled with low over/under lines. For his assignment tonight in the Bay Area, the line is set at 6.5.

    Other Monday Notes

-- Archie Bradley (2-2, 5.28 ERA) opens up Arizona’s series tonight with the Atlanta Braves at home, and he’s carrying an interesting streak into his start. After impressively out-dueling Claytn Kershaw in his Major League debut on April 11, the heralded rookie has made six starts, with all six going over the total. He’s allowed four runs or more in all three of his outings since coming off the disabled list on May 16, and tonight he opposes Alex Wood (3-2, 3.50 ERA) in a matchup that features an o/u line of 8.5.

-- Few pitchers have been more consistent than reigning NL Rookie of the Year Jacob deGrom (5-4, 2.71 ERA), who has yielded two runs or less in seven of his ten starts thus far in 2015. He’s coming off an excellent May, finishing up at 3-1 with a 2.16 ERA for the month, and the Mets have won four of his past five starts. On the road in San Diego, he’s a standard -110 versus Andrew Cashner (2-7, 3.00 ERA), who has been much better than his unpleasant win-loss record. Cashner, remember, had his franchise record of 22 consecutive starts at home of allowing less than three earned runs snapped a couple of weeks ago, but he’s still be good, pitching six or more innings in each of his nine outings since Opening Day. The over/under for this one is understandable 6.5.

Pitcher change - Brewers' Matt Garza scratched

St. Louis vs. Milwaukee on June 01 at 8:10 PM. New Starter: Mike Fiers, Milwaukee

MLB roundup: Hamilton gives Texas walk-offf win

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Pinch hitter Josh Hamilton lined a two-run double to left-center with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, lifting the Texas Rangers to a 4-3 win over the Boston Red Sox on Sunday.

Hamilton's liner off Koji Uehara scored Hanser Alberto from third, and Prince Fielder motored in from first.

Hamilton started the previous six games since returning to Texas but was left out of Sunday's starting lineup by manager Jeff Banister, who was ejected in the top of the ninth for arguing a call at second base.

Texas trailed 3-2 before Alberto opened the ninth inning by reaching on an error by Boston third baseman Pablo Sandoval. A sacrifice bunt and a groundout got Alberto to third before Fielder was intentionally walked. That set the stage for Hamilton.

            Brewers 7, Diamondbacks 6 (17 innings)

MILWAUKEE -- Martin Maldonado hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 17th, snapping Milwaukee's seven-game losing streak with a victory over Arizona in the longest game in the history of Miller Park.

Right-hander Matt Garza (3-7), scheduled to start Monday in St. Louis, put up five scoreless innings of relief, holding the Diamondbacks scoreless while scattering three hits and a pair of intentional walks.

Right-hander Vidal Nuno (0-1) went 5 1/3 innings and struck out six, including second baseman Luis Sardinas to open the 17th. That brought up Maldonado, who had three hits and two walks already on the day. He smacked Nuno's first offering to the batter's eye in center to end it.

            Reds 8, Nationals 2

CINCINNATI -- Todd Frazier and Brandon Phillips homered, helping Cincinnati complete a three-game sweep of first-place Washington.

The Nationals were the hottest team in baseball coming into the series, having won 21 of 27. However, they were swept for the first time since April 24-26 at Miami.

Frazier went 3-for-4 with a homer, double and three RBIs for the Reds, who swept Washington for the first time since 2011. There was some good news for the Nationals, as Bryce Harper returned to the lineup after being scratched from Saturday's start with a sore back. He went 0-for-2 with two walks.

            Mets 4, Marlins 3

NEW YORK -- Bartolo Colon took over the National League lead in wins, throwing seven solid innings and helping his own cause with an RBI double as New York beat Miami.

The Mets salvaged the finale of the three-game series and moved within a half-game of the Nationals for first place in the NL East. The Marlins were pursuing just their second three-game winning streak of the season.

The 42-year-old Colon (8-3) has earned a decision in each of his last 23 starts. He allowed three runs on six hits and no walks while striking out two and throwing just 79 pitches, 55 for strikes.

            Rockies 4, Phillies 1

PHILADELPHIA -- Colorado slugged its way to a three-game sweep of Philadelphia.

After hitting six home runs over the first two games, the Rockies clubbed two more, as Nolan Arenado and DJ LeMahieu connected for a pair of two-run shots to help Colorado win its seventh game in the last eight.

On the contrary, the Phillies homered just once over their last seven games -- all losses -- marking their longest skid of the season to dip to a season-worst 14 games under .500.

            Cardinals 3, Dodgers 1

ST. LOUIS -- Call it Carlos Martinez's tribute to former teammate and countryman Oscar Taveras. On the day St. Louis honored the late Taveras with a pregame ceremony, Martinez channeled his emotions into seven powerful shutout innings to beat Los Angeles.

While warming up in the bullpen, Martinez (5-2) appeared to wipe tears from his eyes as a tribute to Taveras, who died last October in an auto accident in the Dominican Republic, played on a video board. Martinez then allowed just one hit -- a second-inning single to Andre Ethier -- and walked three with eight strikeouts.

Martinez hasn't allowed a run in his past three starts, covering 20 1/3 innings.

            White Sox 6, Astros 0

HOUSTON -- With his spot in the rotation on shaky ground, John Danks threw a shutout and Chicago claimed the rubber match of it three-game series with Houston.

Danks (3-4) worked more than seven innings for the first time this season while also recording his first shutout of the season. He had surrendered 11 earned runs over his last two starts and 10 1/3 innings, but against the Astros, Danks was in control from the first pitch. He scattered 10 hits.

The White Sox provided early run support against Houston right-hander Roberto Hernandez, scratching across one run on three singles in the second inning before expanding their lead to 4-0 with a three-run third inning.

            Rays 9, Orioles 5

BALTIMORE -- Right-hander Jake Odorizzi snapped a three-game losing streak, Steven Souza had three hits, including a home run, and Tampa Bay beat Baltimore.

After losing six straight, the Rays have won consecutive games, taking the three-game series against the defending American League East champions.

Odorizzi (4-5) allowed four runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and two walks over six-plus innings.

            Twins 6, Blue Jays 5

MINNEAPOLIS -- Torii Hunter's two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Minnesota over Toronto in the rubber match of a three-game series.

With the Twins trailing by a run after a solo homer by Toronto's Josh Donaldson in the top of the inning, Minnesota got the leadoff man aboard after a throwing error by Jays shortstop Jose Reyes. Brian Dozier followed with a single two batters later, setting up Hunter, who ripped the first pitch he saw off the wall in left-center field.

Blaine Boyer pitched a scoreless eighth and closer Glen Perkins the ninth for his league-leading 19th save.

            Cubs 2, Royals 1 (11 innings)

CHICAGO -- David Ross delivered a walk-off RBI single with bases loaded in the 11th inning, giving Chicago a victory over Kansas City.

Shortstop Alcides Escobar sprinted to short left to try to catch Ross' bloop shot, but it fell in for a hit as Escobar appeared to slip, allowing Kris Bryant to score from third.

Zac Rosscup (2-1) pitched one-third of an inning for the victory. The walk-off win was the major-league-leading sixth of the season for Chicago.

            A's 3, Yankees 0

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Jesse Chavez threw eight shutout innings, and Stephen Vogt hit a two run homer and drove in three runs, leading Oakland to a victory over New York.

The A's took three of four games from the Yankees and won a series at home for the first time this season after six losses and a split.

Chavez (2-5) allowed seven hits, struck out six and walked none. The right-hander threw a career-high 110 pitches and matched his career high for innings pitched. Tyler Clippard pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his seventh save.

            Indians 6, Mariners 3 (12 innings)

SEATTLE -- A bases-loaded walk from Seattle's seventh relief pitcher, Dominic Leone, resulted in the go-ahead run in the 12th before Cleveland added another hit and two more runs.

Cleveland finished with a season-high 18 hits and rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to win the series by way of its third victory in four games.

Zach McAllister (1-2) earned his first win of the season after pitching a scoreless 11th, while Austin Adams earned his first career save as Cleveland's seventh, and final, pitcher used in the game. The Indians won despite leaving 17 runners on base.

            Braves 7, Giants 5

SAN FRANCISCO -- Jace Peterson capped a four-run, ninth-inning rally with a bases-clearing triple, lifting Atlanta to a victory over San Francisco.

In winning their second in a row to earn a 2-2 split in the four-game series, the Braves overcame a 5-3 deficit in the ninth against Giants closer Santiago Casilla with the help of an error on shortstop Brandon Crawford on what could have been the final play of the game.

Freddie Freeman started Atlanta's rally with a solo home run, his seventh of the season. Nick Masset (1-1) threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings for the win, and Jason Grilli pitched a scoreless ninth for his 15th save.

            Angels 4, Tigers 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Johnny Giavotella hit a two-run single in the eighth inning, giving Los Angeles a win over Detroit.

The Angels earned their fourth win in a row and fifth in seven games while handing the Tigers their fourth consecutive loss and seventh in nine games.

Giavotella and Chris Iannetta had two hits apiece for Los Angeles, which swept the four-game series.

            Padres 7, Pirates 1

SAN DIEGO -- Will Middlebrooks hit a home run and drove in three runs, and San Diego earned a spilt of the four-game series.

The Padres' Clint Barmes and Justin Upton each had three hits.

San Diego scored seven runs in the first four innings, which was more than enough for Odrisamer Despaigne (3-3), who pitched a career-high eight innings, allowing one run on seven hits. He struck out four and walked one.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the Day: Yankees at Mariners
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Seattle Mariners (-145, 6.0)

There was a time when it looked as if Felix Hernandez and Michael Pineda would form the backbone of the Seattle Mariners' rotation for years to come. The former teammates square off for the first time Monday, when Pineda leads the New York Yankees into Seattle for the opener of a three-game series.

Both pitchers were All-Stars for Seattle in 2011 before Pineda was traded to New York and missed two seasons in a row due to injury, making Monday his first appearance against his old mates. While the big Dominican finally has turned the corner to become the Yankees' best starter this year, Hernandez remains dominant for the Mariners, as he is coming off his 11th career shutout - a four-hitter at Tampa Bay on Wednesday. The aces will be trying to help their clubs turn things around after both dropped three of four over the weekend. New York was blanked 3-0 in Oakland on Sunday, while Seattle was outhit 18-5 in a 12-inning, 6-3 loss to Cleveland.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, YES (New York), ROOT (Seattle)

LINE HISTORY: The Mariners opened at -153 and have been bet down slightly to -145. The total is as low as you'll see at 6.0 runs.

                INJURY REPORT:

Yankees - SP M Tanaka (15-day DL, arm), RF S Heathcott (15-day DL, quad), CF J Ellsbury (15-day DL, knee), RP C Martin (15 day-DL, elbow), SS G Petit (15-day DL, hand), SS B Ryan (Mid June, calf), SP C Whitley (60-day DL, elbow), SP I Nova (Late June, elbow).

Mariners - RP D Rollins (July 4, suspension), SP J Paxton (15-day DL, finger), SP H Iwakuma (Late June, back), RP T Olsen (15-day DL, knee).

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Michael Pineda (6-2, 3.36 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Felix Hernandez (8-1, 1.91)

Pineda bounced back from a pair of lackluster outings with 6 2/3 solid innings to defeat Kansas City on Wednesday. He allowed one run and fanned eight against one walk, giving him a remarkable 67 strikeouts and five free passes on the year. The 26-year-old posted a 2.92 ERA in 12 starts at Safeco Field in his one season with the Mariners.

Seattle is 9-1 in games started by Hernandez, who leads the majors in victories and tops the American League in WHIP (0.892) and shutouts (two). He has looked a bit more human in his last two home starts, serving up a pair of home runs in each outing and walking a season-high four in his most recent Safeco Field appearance on May 16 against Boston. The 29-year-old is 9-5 with a 2.87 ERA in 16 career starts against the Yankees but has a 2.11 mark in his last 13 encounters to go along with four complete games - his most against any opponent other than the Los Angeles Angels.

                TRENDS:

                * Yankees are 5-0 in their last five meetings in Seattle.
                * Mariners are 10-1 in Hernandez's last 11 starts during Game 1 of a series.
                * Over is 6-0 in Pineda's last six road starts.
                * Under is 7-1 in Hernandez's last eight starts as a favorite of -110 to -150.

CONSENSUS: The public is fairly split in this matchup with 58 percent of wagers backing the Mainers at -145. It is even closer when it comes to the total, with 55 percent of wagers backing the over 6.0.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MLB betting cheat sheet: Sandovol’s slump has Red Sox in AL East cellar
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for this week’s major-league schedule:

                    Sox in last

The American League East is tied with the National League East as the worst division in baseball (14 games under .500). Blame the Red Sox, at least to some extent. The Sox are 1-6 in their last seven, dropping them to 22-29 overall. New third baseman Pablo Sandoval (.251, 5 HR, 17 RBI) has not gone deep since May 16 and has just one RBI since that date. He does not have a multi-hit game since May 10.

                    It’s still Miller time

Shelby Miller continues to be outstanding in his first season with the Atlanta Braves. He is 5-2 with a 1.48 ERA and his last eight starts have all been quality. Only his first two were not because he went just five innings (without allowing more than one run). The under is 8-2 in Miller’s 10 starts. He will take the bump again on Tuesday at the Arizona Diamondbacks.

                    Rocky mountain high

The Colorado Rockies (22-26) are still in the NL West cellar, but their four-game surge is the longest current streak in the bigs. They have won seven of their last eight contests, as well. All three meetings with the Philadelphia Phillies this past weekend went under the total, with the Rockies surrendering four runs in three games.

                    Pitching Notes

                    * Minnesota Twins’ closer Glen Perkins has stormed into the major league lead in saves with 19. He recorded 12 alone in May, including eight since May 15. Perkins boasts a 1.88 ERA in 24 innings and he does not have a single blown save. The Twins are 7-1 in their last eight overall.

                    * The New York Mets have announced that they will activate Dillon Gee from the disabled list and start him on Wednesday against the San Diego Padres. Gee has not pitched since May 5 because of a groin injury. The right-hander is 0-2 with a 3.86 ERA through five appearances.

                    Hitting Notes

                    * Toronto Blue Jays’ first baseman Josh Donaldson (.312, 15 HR, 39 RBI) is on a six-game hitting streak and has six home runs in those six. Donaldson has hit safely 11 times during the current stretch, including a 4-for-4 performance with two dingers and four RBIs last Tuesday against the Chicago White Sox.

                    * The Phillies have scored 157 runs this season, at least 34 fewer than all other National League teams. Philadelphia has crossed the plate just four times in its last four games (0-4 SU, 0-4 O/U) and it has not scored more than four runs in any contest since May 23. Ryan Howard, Freddy Galvis, and Maikel Franco all hit worse than .150 this past week.

                    Totals Streak

St. Louis Cardinals (19-21-2 O/U): The under is 4-0 in the Cardinals’ last four overall and 8-1-1 in their last 10 overall. That is in part because they have given up more than four runs only once in their last eight outings. Additionally, in their four losses since May 21 they have scored a total of three runs.

                    Weather Notes

                    * There is almost a 100 percent possibility of thunderstorms in D.C. when the Washington Nationals host the Toronto Blue Jays Monday evening.

                    * Wind will be blowing in from center field at around 15 miles per hour at Fenway Park Monday. The Boston Red Sox open a four-game set versus the Minnesota Twins Monday.

                    Injury Notes

                    * Texas Rangers’ third baseman Adrian Beltre will miss at least two weeks after sustaining a sprained thumb on Sunday. Beltre (.257, 6 HR, 18 RBIs) was injured while sliding into second base after delivering two hits and two RBIs during his team’s 4-3 win over Boston.

                    * Bryce Harper (back) and Denard Span (knee) of the Washington Nationals both played on Sunday despite physical problems. Harper missed the previous game against the Cincinnati Reds but managed to suit back up for the series finale, in which he went 0-for-2 with two walks. Span left in the eighth inning because of persistent soreness and his status is uncertain.

                      Monday, June 1

Over trending in this pitcher's starts

The Over has posted a record of 6-0 in the last six Arizona Diamondback games started by Archie Bradley.

In those six games, both the Diamondbacks and their opponents have combined to score at least 10 runs to eclipse the closing total in each contest.

Bradley (2-2, 5.28 ERA) is scheduled to take the bump as the Diamondbacks welcome the Atlanta Braves to town for a three-game series Monday. Alex Wood is the probable starter for the Braves.

The total for this contest opened at 8 but has since increased a half-run and is presently 8.5.

                          Monday, June 1

Giants dominating foes from NL Central

The San Francisco Giants have posted a record of 6-1 in seven games versus teams from the National League Central this season. Going further back, the Giants are 17-4 in their previous 21 contests against clubs from that division.

It should be noted that the Giants have played series against the two worst teams in the divisions, the Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers. They swept a three-game set with the Brewers and took three of four from the Reds.

The Pittsburgh Pirates visit AT&T Park for a three-game series beginning Monday. The Giants are currently tabbed as +117 dogs.

Holy $hit Betting Stat of the Day: Felix 'King' of the under

Seattle Mariners ace "King" Felix Hernandez has been so dominant that he is cashing under bets at a very high rate and books can't seem to set a total low enough.

The under is a very impressive 20-5-2 in Hernandez's last 27 starts overall and 8-1-1 in 2015 alone thanks to his 1.91 ERA.

But even when Hernandez is up against a low total, he is still going under. The under is 21-5-1 in his last 27 starts with the total set at 6.5 runs or lower.

Hernandez faces a very low total of 6.0 Monday night, when he faces off against Michael Pineda (3.36 ERA, 6-2-2 O/U) and the New York Yankees.

Los Angeles Dodgers' ace Clayton Kershaw has been much worse on the road than at home this season.

At home he is 3-1, with a 2.48 ERA with 49 strikeouts to just six walks, while on the road he is 0-2 with a 5.23 ERA and 34 strikeouts to 10 walks.

Kershaw takes the mound tonight in Colorado to take on the Rockies, where the Dodgers are currently -193 road faves.
