Preview: Tigers (28-23) at Angels (26-24)
    Game: 4
    Venue: Angel Stadium of Anaheim
    Date: May 31, 2015 8:05 PM EDT

Despite their current struggles, one rule nearly always holds true for the Detroit Tigers.

They win with David Price on the mound.

Looking to avoid their first sweep of the season, the Tigers again turn to the slump-busting Price on Sunday night against the Los Angeles Angels.

Detroit (28-23) has won Price's last six starts and nine of 10 this season, losing only when the left-hander allowed eight runs in 2 1-3 innings on April 22. Price (4-1, 2.97 ERA) has posted a 1.96 ERA in those nine wins and has notched a quality start in five of his last six outings.

Price pitched seven scoreless innings Tuesday in a 1-0 win over Oakland that snapped a three-game losing streak.

"That's what makes him one of the better pitchers in the game," manager Brad Ausmus told MLB's official website. "He gets the big outs when needed."

He'll have a similar task Sunday after the Tigers dropped their first three in Anaheim to fall to 1-12 there since 2012.

The Angels (26-24) exploded on Saturday with five home runs in their 8-6 victory. Mike Trout, Albert Pujols, Kole Calhoun, Matt Joyce and Carlos Perez all went deep off Detroit's Shane Greene in the first two innings.

'The bats came alive, and it was a good night for it," manager Mike Scioscia said.

Pujols has homered in his last three games - he hasn't gone deep in four straight since June 3-7, 2011, his last season in St. Louis - while Joyce has a home run in three of his last four contests.

'We were due for it,' Trout said. 'The last couple of games, we've been hitting balls hard, but they just weren't falling in. And tonight we got a couple over the fence.'

Although dominant this season, Price has stumbled against the Angels in his last two meetings, allowing 12 runs in 13 2-3 innings in Anaheim. The most recent of those came on May 18, 2014, when Pujols hit two home runs off Price in the Angels' 6-2 win.

Matt Shoemaker (3-4, 5.44) will take the mound for Los Angeles. The right-hander is coming off the best performance of his season, as he threw seven scoreless innings Tuesday against San Diego after posting a 7.88 ERA over his previous three starts.

He enjoyed a solid showing last season against the Tigers, limiting Detroit to three hits in seven innings of a 4-0 win on July 26.

Los Angeles has won 16 of its last 19 meetings with the Tigers, including each of the last six. The Angels haven't swept the Tigers in a four-game series since April 19-22, 1996.

Erick Aybar, who has hit safely in 18 of his last 19, is expected to rejoin the Angels lineup after missing the last two games with a hamstring injury.

      Sunday's Late Tips

      May 31, 2015

Braves at Giants – 4:05 PM EST

San Francisco’s recent dominance at AT&T Park ended on Saturday night in an 8-0 defeat to Atlanta, ending a six-game home winning streak. The Giants were shut out at home for the first time since April 17 against Arizona, as Tim Lincecum allowed four earned runs in less than five innings of work to snap a four-game home winning streak for the former Cy Young Award winner.

The Braves go for the series split this afternoon, sending out Julio Teheran (4-2, 4.91 ERA) to the mound, who is coming off a horrible performance at Los Angeles. Teheran gave up eight earned runs and 10 hits in 4.1 innings as the Braves were blanked by the Dodgers, 8-0. The Braves are 3-3 in Teheran’s six starts as a road underdog this season, while the right-hander lost twice to the Giants in 2014.

Madison Bumgarner (6-2, 3.00 ERA) faces a Braves’ lineup that is batting just .218 against left-handed pitching, while the 2014 World Series MVP is riding a three-game winning streak. The Giants own a solid 7-3 record when Bumgarner takes the mound this season, but two of those losses have come as a home favorite to the Diamondbacks and Marlins. San Francisco is off an ‘over’ last night, as the Giants have cashed consecutive ‘overs’ just twice at AT&T Park this season.

Yankees at Athletics – 4:05 PM EST

The A’s cruised to a pair of wins over the Yankees to start their four-game series, but New York rallied for a 5-3 victory as a short underdog on Saturday. Oakland built an early 3-1 advantage, as Carlos Beltran’s two-run homer in the sixth inning broke a 3-3 tie to give the Yankees the lead for good. The victory was just the second in the last 11 road games for the Bronx Bombers, who look for back-to-back away wins for the first time since early May at Boston.

Former North Carolina Tar Heel Adam Warren (3-3, 3.91 ERA) toes the rubber in the finale, seeking his third road victory this season. The Yankees began the season with a 5-1 record when Warren started, but New York is 1-2 in his past three outings, including one-run road losses at Washington and Tampa Bay.

Jesse Chavez (1-5, 2.44 ERA) hasn’t had much luck for Oakland, in spite of pitching well. In Chavez’s last two starts, Oakland’s anemic offense failed to produce a single run, even though the right-hander allowed an unearned run in eight innings of a 1-0 loss to Detroit in his last outing. Oakland is 5-1-1 to the ‘under’ when Chavez takes the mound, while the A’s are back on the ‘over’ track at home by cashing the ‘over’ in all three games against the Yankees.

Indians at Mariners – 4:10 PM EST

Cleveland and Seattle have played three competitive games so far during their four-game set, as the Tribe has taken two of the first three contests. The Indians held off the Mariners last night, 4-3 to cash as +130 road underdogs, while improving to 7-1 in their last eight away contests against left-handed starting pitchers. Today, Cleveland draws another southpaw starter looking to finish off a series victory before heading to Kansas City.

J.A. Happ (3-1, 3.71 ERA) is coming off three consecutive no-decisions for the Mariners, but Seattle owns a solid 5-2 record in his past seven trips to the mound. Happ tossed six innings at Tampa Bay in his previous outing, allowing three earned runs, but the M’s bullpen allowed the Rays to tie things up in the ninth and force extras. The Mariners won, 7-6, as Happ returns to Safeco Field today where he has seen plenty of success this season, yielding two earned runs or less in four home starts, as Seattle is 3-1 in these games.

The Indians counter with Danny Salazar (5-1, 3.65 ERA), who is fresh off a no-decision against Texas in his previous outing, 4-3 defeat to the Rangers as a -155 home favorite. Salazar has allowed at least three earned runs in four of his last six trips to the mound, but the Tribe is 4-1 in his five road starts this season. Salazar is making his first career start against the Mariners, who are 4-1 in their past five games off a one-run defeat.

Tigers at Angels – 8:05 PM EST

Detroit is limping into the series finale hoping to avoid the four-game sweep after dropping an 8-6 decision to the Angels last night. The Halos have outscored the Tigers, 22-8 through the first three wins in this series, as L.A. jumped out to a 7-1 advantage in Saturday’s triumph. The Angels have grabbed six straight home meetings with the Tigers, while improving to 7-2 in their last nine home contests overall.

The Tigers have the right guy taking the mound tonight to stop the bleeding, sending out ace David Price (4-1, 2.97 ERA). Price is coming off a dominating effort over the A’s in his past outing, tossing seven shutout innings in a 1-0 triumph on Memorial Day, as Detroit is now 6-0 in the southpaw’s last six starts. The former Cy Young Award winner didn’t have much luck in Orange County last season in his previous outing against the Angels, giving up six runs and 11 hits in a 6-2 loss when pitching for the Rays.

Matt Shoemaker (3-4, 5.44 ERA) is winless in four of his past five starts, but the Angels’ righty delivered his best start of the season last Tuesday against San Diego. Shoemaker didn’t allow a run in seven innings, while scattering four hits as the Angels and Padres went to extra innings tied at 0-0. However, the Padres busted out for a four-spot in the top of the tenth to beat L.A., 4-0 and Shoemaker’s effort was wasted. The Angels are 0-4 in Shoemaker’s four starts at home this season, but the Halos have compiled a 3-1 record when he starts in the underdog role.

Game of the Day: Tigers at Angels
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Tigers at Los Angeles Angels (-103, 7.5)

David Price seeks to win his fourth consecutive decision when the Detroit Tigers close a four-game series against the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday. Price's lone loss came April 22 and that marks the only time Detroit has lost one of his 10 starts this season.

Price defeated Oakland in his last turn when he pitched seven innings of five-hit ball and the Tigers will hope he fares significantly better than Saturday starter Shane Greene. The Angels hit a season-high five homers off Greene in 1 2/3 innings while building a seven-run lead and notched an 8-6 victory that puts them in position to sweep the four-game set Sunday. Los Angeles first baseman Albert Pujols has homered in all three games of the series and is 5-for-10 with six RBIs. Detroit has lost six of its last eight games and has slipped to three games behind first-place Kansas City in the American League Central.

The 28-year-old pitched seven innings of four-hit shutout ball in a no-decision against San Diego, marking the third time in five starts that he allowed four or fewer hits. Jays' Hutchison posting awful numbers on the road

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Drew Hutchison has been far from a road warrior this season.

Hutchinson has posted a 2.97 ERA with opposing teams hitting a minuscule .219 at home so far in the campaign, but owns an ugly 8.03 ERA while allowing batters to hit .320 on the road.

He'll be on the bump once again when the Jays take on the Minnesota Twins at Target Field Sunday. Books have priced Toronto as slight -118 faves with an Over/Under of 8.5.

MLB roundup: Astros' Keuchel tosses four-hit shutout

HOUSTON -- Dallas Keuchel set a career high in strikeouts and pitched a four-hitter as the Houston Astros blanked the Chicago White Sox 3-0 on Saturday.

Keuchel (7-1), coming off his first loss of the season in Baltimore on Memorial Day, finished with 11 strikeouts while dominating the White Sox. He limited Chicago to just four hits, all singles, retired the side in order in the first, seventh and ninth innings, and utilized timely double plays to stamp out potential uprisings in the fifth and eighth innings.

Excluding a passed ball that enabled Geovany Soto to reach second base in the third, Keuchel did not allow a White Sox runner into scoring position. Keuchel lowered his ERA to 1.76 with his eighth career complete game and second shutout. He threw 113 pitches, 78 for strikes.

                  Dodgers 5, Cardinals 1

ST. LOUIS -- Los Angeles couldn't beat Michael Wacha and St. Louis in the 2013 National League Championship Series with ace Clayton Kershaw pitching.

But on Saturday night, No. 5 starter Carlos Frias tossed seven solid, efficient innings to earn the win at soggy Busch Stadium.

Wacha took a no-hitter into the sixth against a team which hadn't scored a road run in a franchise-record 42 innings. But the Dodgers broke through to score four runs in the sixth, three on a home run by Yasmani Grandal, to ensure the win.

                  Yankees 5, Athletics 3

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Carlos Beltran hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs, powering New York past Oakland at the O.co Coliseum.

The Yankees trailed 3-2 after five innings, but Beltran launched a two-run shot off Jesse Hahn with one out in the sixth, giving New York a 4-3 lead. Catcher Brian McCann walked with one out, and Beltran crushed Hahn's 0-1 fastball over the center-field fence, just left of the 388-foot mark, for his fourth homer of the season.

The Yankees won in Oakland for just the second time in the past 13 games.

                  Indians 4, Mariners 3

SEATTLE -- Cleveland jumped out to an early lead and held on to beat Seattle.

Jerry Sands, who was called up from Triple-A two days ago, hit a two-run homer to give the Indians a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Pinch-hitter David Murphy, who was batting for Sands in the sixth, added an RBI single to give Cleveland some breathing room at 4-2.

The Mariners pulled within a run in the seventh and had several chances to tie or take the lead but couldn't get the clutch hit. Seattle was 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

                  Pirates 5, Padres, 2

SAN DIEGO -- Charlie Morton held San Diego to two runs on three hits over seven innings and drove in the decisive run with a sixth-inning ground ball to lead Pittsburgh to victory.

Morton was making only his second start since returning from right hip surgery performed last September.

Morton issued one walk and struck out two Padres. Sixteen of the 21 outs he got came on ground balls. Morton threw only 85 pitches with 57 going for strikes.

                  Angels 8, Tigers 6

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Los Angeles hit a season-high five home runs to defeat Detroit in front of 40,369 at Angel Stadium.

Mike Trout hit his 12th homer of the season and Albert Pujols added his 11th of the year and the 531st of his career. Matt Joyce, Kole Calhoun and Carlos Perez also homered.

The Angels posted their third consecutive victory and their fourth in five games while extending the Tigers' losing stretch to three straight and six of eight.

                  Braves 8, Giants 0

SAN FRANCISCO -- Rookie Williams Perez shut out the hottest team in the majors, San Francisco, over seven innings, en route to his first major league win.

Jace Peterson and Juan Uribe combined for six hits and six runs scored as the Braves got to Giants starter Tim Lincecum, who hadn't allowed a run at home since April 21, for four runs in 4 1/3 innings, ending his scoreless-innings streak at home at 23 and his winning streak at four.

Perez (1-0) struck out three and lowered his ERA as a Braves starter to 1.00.

                  Rangers 8, Red Sox 0

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The bottom of the Texas lineup accounted for six RBIs and Alex Gonzalez was victorious in his major league debut.

Gonzalez, who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, did not give up a run while allowing two hits and issuing five walks over 5 2/3 innings.

Leonys Martin, the No. 7 hitter, was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. No. 8 hitter Robinson Chirinos had a two-run double in a four-run fourth and second baseman Hanser Alberto, the No. 9 hitter, added two RBIs.

                  Rays 3, Orioles 0

BALTIMORE -- Steven Souza Jr. and Joey Butler each hit early solo home runs, and right-hander Erasmo Ramirez pitched seven shutout innings as Tampa Bay ended a six-game losing streak.

Evan Longoria hit a sacrifice fly in the first before Souza and Butler hit their home runs in the second and third innings, respectively, to give the Rays a quick 3-0 lead.

That was plenty for Ramirez (3-2), who set season-high marks in innings and strikeouts (seven) while allowing only three hits.

                  Rockies 5, Phillies 2

PHILADELPHIA -- Colorado continued its power surge with three home runs beat beat Philadelphia.

In back-to-back wins, the Rockies have hit six homers, accounting for all but two of their nine runs. Meanwhile, the Phillies can barely hit any, collecting just one home run in their last six games.

Nolan Arenado, Michael McKenry and Ben Paulsen hit solo home runs to help the Rockies win for the sixth time in their last seven games. The Phillies have lost six straight.

                  Twins 3, Blue Jays 2

MINNEAPOLIS -- Brian Dozier's seventh-inning triple drove in the tie-breaking run and lifted Minnesota over Toronto.

Following a leadoff single by Aaron Hicks, Dozier followed two batters later with a deep drive that barely eluded Jays right fielder Ezequiel Carrera in the right-center gap.

Twins right-hander Ryan Pressly earned the win in relief of starter Kyle Gibson, pitching a 1-2-3 seventh inning before Dozier's heroics.

                  Royals-Cubs, pdd. rain

CHICAGO -- The game between Chicago and Kansas City at Wrigley Field was postponed due to the forecast of inclement weather throughout the evening.

The game will be made up on Monday, Sept. 28.

                  Reds 8, Nationals 5

CINCINNATI -- Zack Cozart's double with the bases loaded in the eighth inning drove home the tying and go-ahead runs, lifting Cincinnati over Washington at Great American Ball Park.

Joey Votto hit a two-run homer in the third inning for the Reds, who took the first two games in the weekend series and ended the Nationals' streak of nine straight series victories.

Aroldis Chapman notched his ninth save.

                  Marlins 9, Mets 5

NEW YORK -- Christian Yelich's two-run, two-out single in the top of the seventh inning snapped a tie and lifted Miami over New York at Citi Field.

Giancarlo Stanton hit two mammoth solo homers for the Marlins, who blew a 5-1 lead in the fourth but won their second straight.

The Mets fell to 17-2 in games in which they score at least five runs.

                  Diamondbacks 7, Brewers 3

MILWAUKEE -- Paul Goldschmidt hit two home runs and Jeremy Hellickson went six innings as Arizona beat Milwaukee at Miller Park.

Goldschmidt has been a terror to Brewers pitching in his career and came into the game batting .418 with seven doubles, three home runs and 10 RBIs in his last 14 games against Milwaukee.

He's been even more lethal at Miller Park, where in 10 career games, he was batting .476 with four home runs nine doubles, including three Friday night.

Gusts blowing in from left at Wrigley Field

The Windy City is living up to its name once again as high winds are expected to play a big part in Sunday's Kansas City Royals-Chicago Cubs matchup at Wrigley Field.

The forecast is calling for gusts of 21 mph blowing in toward the plate from left field at gametime. The clubs will be fully rested in the wake of Saturday's contest getting postponed due to inclement weather in the Chicago area.

Sportsbooks are dealing the Cubbies in the -148 ballpark for the tilt. As of this writing, the total was off the board.

Under is sizzling in Odorizzi's starts

The Under has cashed in seven straight games with Tampa Bay Rays starter Jake Odorizzi on the mound.

He'll get the nod once again on Sunday versus the Baltimore Orioles. The O's are slated to counter with Chris Tillman.

Books have set a current total of 8 for the game.

Books have priced Toronto as slight -118 faves with an Over/Under of 8.5
