O's Tyler Wilson to make first MLB start Thursday

The Baltimore Orioles will give Tyler Wilson his first start in the Major Leagues against the Chicago White Sox in the first game of a doublheader Thursday afternoon.

Wilson has worked two innings out of the bullpen so far this season. He's allowed five hits and one earned run while striking out one batter. He went 2-4 with a 3.29 ERA in eight starts for the Triple-A Norfolk Tides.

The O's are presently +122 home dogs while the Pale Hose, who counter with ace Chris Sale, are -132.

Opinions vary on whether Uribe asked for trade

LOS ANGELES -- Juan Uribe says he didn't demand the Los Angeles Dodgers trade him. All he wanted was for the club to define his role.

However, the third baseman immediately embraced his role as a member of the Atlanta Braves. At least that was the message Uribe projected during a press conference Wednesday.

"I had some great times with the Dodgers," Uribe said via a translator. "I thank God for the opportunity, and the chance I had with the Dodgers, and now the opportunity I'm going to get with the Braves."

Uribe was part of a six-player deal between the Braves and Dodgers that became official earlier Wednesday. The Dodgers dealt him and injured right-hander Chris Withrow in exchange for infielder Alberto Callaspo, left-hander Ian Thomas, minor league right-hander Juan Jaime and left-hander Eric Stults.

Uribe became expendable from the Dodgers when Justin Turner emerged as the starter at third recently, with Alex Guerrero capable of serving as Turner's backup.

Uribe, though, took the change in direction in stride.

"I don't feel bad about the trade," Uribe said. "I would have felt bad if they traded me to a soccer team, basketball team or football team. They traded me to another baseball team, so I'm happy."

Uribe, whose last appearance in a Dodgers uniform occurred Monday night as a pinch hitter, lined up with his Los Angeles teammates for the national anthem before Tuesday's game. However, he immediately disappeared down the dugout ramp after the anthem and wasn't seen until after the game.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly and Andrew Friedman, president of the club's baseball operations, implied Uribe asked to be traded.

"Juan has always been a great teammate, one of those guys (who) is great in the clubhouse and that keeps guys laughing," Mattingly said. "It's always tough to lose a guy like that. Knowing that his playing time here had went down, and I also know just from the conversations with him that he wanted to play more. He expressed that interest in getting somewhere where he could play more.

"It's kind of double-edged from the standpoint in the sense that it's tough because you have the guy, but you want him to be happy. But you also want your team to be focused."

Mattingly said the Dodgers made the right move.

"Again, if a guy's not happy, and he hasn't been happy for probably the last couple of weeks with his situation, then it's never good," Mattingly said. "You want the pieces to fit, and Juan was getting to be a tougher fit from the standpoint of the guys we have here."

The 36-year-old Uribe, who was in his fifth season with the Dodgers and 15th in the majors, hit .247 with one home run and six RBIs in 81 at-bats for Los Angeles this year. Uribe previously played for the Colorado Rockies, the Chicago White Sox and the San Francisco Giants, earning World Series rings with the latter two.

Game of the day: Tigers at Angels

The slumping Los Angeles Angels have dipped below .500 and attempt to get back to the break-even point when they host the Detroit Tigers in Thursday's opener of a four-game series. Los Angeles has dropped four of its last five games and has scored just 12 runs during the stretch while Detroit has won back-to-back contests following a three-game skid.

Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera was hitless in four at-bats in Wednesday's loss against Oakland and that snapped his 13-game hitting streak. On the other side of the spectrum is cold-hitting second baseman Ian Kinsler, who is just 3-for-32 over the last eight games and is still homerless through Detroit's first 48 games. Los Angeles also has some slumping batters as center fielder Mike Trout has just one homer over the last 11 games and first baseman Albert Pujols has just five RBIs over his past 19 contests. The Angels went 1-of-9 with runners in scoring position during back-to-back losses to the San Diego Padres after taking the series opener.

LINE HISTORY: The Angels opened -139 and the total at 7.5.

INJURY REPORT: Tigers - SS Jose Iglesias (Questionable, knee), DH Victor Martinez (15-day DL, knee). Angels - RF Collin Cowgill (Doubtful, hand).

WHAT CAPPERS SAY: "Consistency hasn?t exactly been the Tigers calling card this season, but they?re getting it done nonetheless. It?s been the Angels starting pitching that has led the charge this year, not their well-paid bats." Covers Expert Sean Mu
PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RHP Buck Farmer (NR) vs. Angels LH C.J. Wilson (2-3, 3.36 ERA)

Farmer is being recalled from Triple-A Toledo to pitch with the Tigers short on starters due to Justin Verlander’s injury and Alfredo Simon’s leave to tend to his ailing father. He was 5-1 with a 2.98 ERA in nine starts at Toledo with 50 strikeouts in 51 1/3 innings. Farmer went 0-1 with an 11.57 ERA in four major-league appearances (two starts) for Detroit in 2014.

Wilson lost to Boston in his last turn when he gave up four runs and seven hits in six innings. He is 1-3 over his last eight starts despite allowing two runs or fewer in five of them. Wilson is 2-3 with a 5.49 ERA in 12 career appearances (six starts) against Detroit.

            TRENDS:

            * Under is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
            * Tigers are 3-13 in the last 16 meetings.
            * Angels are 1-4 in Wilsons last five starts vs. a team with a winning record.
            * Under is 5-1 in Angels last six home games.

COVERS CONSENSUS: Fifty-four percent of bettors are backing the Angels.

Mariners finally back to .500 heading into homestand

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Seattle Mariners haven't been at .500 since the opening week of the season, but with five wins in six games and a 23-23 record, Seattle has momentum heading into an 11-game homestand.

"That's the team we thought we were going to be when we came up from spring training," designated hitter Nelson Cruz said after hitting his major-league-leading 18th home run, a clutch three-run shot in the ninth inning of a 3-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday. "The pitching is there and the offense is clicking. It's nice."

The three-game sweep was Seattle's first at Tropicana Field since 2000 and first against the Rays since 2006. Cruz's 18 home runs are Seattle's most by the end of May since Ken Griffey Jr. had 20 in 1999 -- and Cruz has four home games left this month.

Manager Lloyd McClendon took exception to the notion that Seattle's poor start was a function of a "country-club atmosphere" and that experts may have written off his team too soon.

"I think it was overexaggerated that we had fallen off a cliff," he said. "I think those were unfair shots. I'm proud of my guys and very proud of the way they grinded it out today."

Mets' aim to aid young staff with 6-man rotation

NEW YORK -- On Monday, New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said the club's planned experiment with a six-man rotation was something he " ... wouldn't call temporary, but is certainly not permanent."

But it sounded a whole lot more permanent than temporary on Wednesday, when pitching coach Dan Warthen said the Mets hope to use the six-man rotation into August.

Warthen, speaking before the Mets' 7-0 win over the Philadelphia Phillies at Citi Field, said the goal of the six-man rotation was to reduce each starter's regular season workload from 33 starts to 30. That would allow the Mets to be able to rely on their most promising young right-handers -- Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom and Wednesday's starter and winner, Noah Syndergaard -- deep into September and, the team hopes, October.

"We would like to get this particular program to lose us three starts," Warthen said. "So there's a chance we could go back to five somewhere (in) August."

Harvey and deGrom have both undergone Tommy John surgery and neither has thrown 180 innings in a season as a big leaguer. However, both pitchers are on pace to easily exceed 200 innings this season over the course of 33 starts.

Syndergaard, who threw 7 1/3 shutout innings in his fourth big league start, hasn't thrown more than 133 innings in a season as a professional and has already thrown 54 1/3 innings this year between the Mets and Triple-A Las Vegas.

"It is better for the player," Warthen said. "It's better for the organization, at least, until we get to where we feel like we have plenty of innings left in September and still have the possibility of innings left in October."

Warthen said it was tough to convince everyone in the rotation of the new alignment but that the organization is emphasizing how pitching every sixth day can not only help youngsters but also in-their-prime starters such as left-hander Jonathon Niese and right-hander Dillon Gee as well as 42-year-old right-hander Bartolo Colon, who is the oldest starter in baseball.

"It's only going to prolong their careers," Warthen said. "From the organization's standpoint, from my standpoint, I think it's the smart thing to do."

The Pittsburgh Pirates picked up their sixth consecutive win Wednesday and will look to add to that Thursday. During their hot streak the Bucs have been dominating teams as they have only allowed nine runs.

The Pirates have a +26 scoring margin during their streak, while they have won each contest by at least two runs.

Red Sox bump rotation to six starters for now

MINNEAPOLIS -- With a long stretch of games without a day off, the Boston Red Sox are slightly altering their rotation heading into a four-game road series against the Texas Rangers this weekend.

Left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez is expected to be called up from Triple-A Pawtucket in time to make his major-league debut against the Rangers on Thursday.

If he performs well, there could be an opening for the 24-year-old, who was acquired last summer from the Baltimore Orioles in the Andrew Miller trade.

"Maybe we'll really, really reconsider," manager John Farrell said Wednesday before a 6-4 loss to the Minnesota Twins in the final game of a three-game series at Target Field. The Twins won all three games, sweeping Boston for the first time in since 2006.

The addition of Rodriguez means the Red Sox will go with an extra arm in their rotation for the time being. Boston will have played 20 games without a day off by June 8, the team's next scheduled day off.

Farrell said he thought it would be a good idea to add some extra insurance to the rotation to help ease the burden on the pitching staff, especially with right-hander Joe Kelly's recent struggles. Kelly lasted just 1 2/3 innings in a 7-2 loss to the Twins on Monday.

"We're building in a sixth starter through this time through the rotation," Farrell said.

With Rodriguez getting the start on Thursday, Boston's other starters will get pushed back an extra day, with Steven Wright going Friday, Wade Miley on Saturday and Kelly on Sunday.

Lyles, De La Rosa to pitch this weekend for Rockies

CINCINNATI -- The Colorado Rockies announced Wednesday that right-hander Jordan Lyles and lefty Jorge De La Rosa should be ready to pitch by this weekend's series at Philadelphia.

Lyles has been out with a toe injury. De La Rosa had a cut on his left middle finger.

Even if they couldn't go, manager Walt Weiss is confident in the organization's pitching depth, which has been tested in recent weeks, and passed.

"It gives you a good feeling that you've got some depth on the mound. It's something everybody in this game looks for," Weiss said.

On Tuesday night, left-hander Chris Rusin was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque to make start in place of De La Rosa. Rusin delivered seven solid innings, allowing one run and four hits.

In Game 2 of last weekend's doubleheader against the Giants, right-hander David Hale allowed three runs (two earned) and eight hits with no walks in 6 2/3 innings.

Colorado used a club-record 15 starting pitchers last season due to injuries.

"Last year was insane," Weiss said. "Your depth always is going to be tested in this league. It's just a matter of time. It's nice to we have guys who can step in and do the job."

The overall health of the starting staff is key for Colorado which has won 4 of 5 including Wednesday's 6-4 victory at Cincinnati.

For Lyles, the toe injury was continuation of some odd physical mishaps dating to last season when he broke his left hand applying a tag at home plate.

Earlier this season, Lyles was struck on his pitching hand by a line drive off the bat of the Angels' Albert Pujols.

"His arm's always been healthy, that's the silver lining I guess," said Weiss. "Nothing's long-term for this injury. There's a few more tests he has to pass, but so far so good."
